The CP Holiday Train rolled into Agassiz on Friday. And despite pouring rain and even a little snow, crowds were warmed by the appearance of Jim Cuddy, Devin Cuddy and Kelly Prescott. The Agassiz stop was part of a cross-Canada tour that helps food banks across the country. Not only was food collected to support Agassiz-Harrison Community Services, a cheque for $7,000 was presented from Canadian Pacific.

A Holiday Hike We had moved to Agassiz in 2003 from a cabin in the mountains. We were used to being above the snow line. Living in the Valley was agreeing with us in many ways, but we longed to fly up above the coastal cloud in wintertime. One day close to Christmas rain was falling mixed with snow, the first we had seen that year.

We decided to go in search of a Winter Wonderland near home. We drove to the base of what is locally known as The Green Grind. Dressed in winter gear and boots we hiked up the steep curving slope. Before

long we found ourselves in a silent, Narnia-like forest.

Snow was falling, snow on snow, decorating tree limbs and covering the path. We hiked up to the radio tower, tasting snowflakes on our tongues and stopping to throw loosely packed snowballs at each other. We found the book we had been told about by a local hiker and wrote our names in it. We made our way slowly down the mountain, carefully, and with satisfaction in our hearts. We had found our White Christmas.

I remember the winters in Ottawa when I was growing up. The bitter cold and snow which made the season feel like Christmas. Ears, fingers, and toes ‘tingled’ when outside in the icy weather and the snow was ploughed into high banks in ditches along side of the road. My father marked the edges of our drive way against the ditches with round red reflectors on the end of metal rods. Family from the city would spend Christmas Day with us and without fail, although the driveway was marked, someone leaving at the end of the day, would back their car into the ditch. The teasing was relentless as everyone, dressed in their Sunday best, pitched in to push the stranded car back onto the road. With the task completed we went back into the house with ears, fingers, and toes that ‘tingled’ from the icy weather.

From age 4 to 10 I lived in Australia, close to Sydney in the Northern Beaches. Our Christmas photos are of us bronze-skinned kids opening presents in our flip-flops and speedos, because Christmas was at the hottest point in the summer. Despite the sub-tropical climate, Christmas was as magical as anywhere in the northern hemisphere, and we anticipated the visit from the old fellow on the sleigh with wonder. My fondest memory is when I drew a picture of a car for Santa which I placed on the chimney of our house a couple of days before Christmas. A few weeks later, I had forgotten about it, and my dad asked me if I had checked to see if Santa had taken the picture. I climbed on the roof, and there was a note "Thank you Andy, Santa".

Our family’s tradition dates back to 1979. Our children were 5 and 3 with a 7 week old baby. We decided to venture out on Christmas Eve and visit our parents for dinner. Nanna asked our 3 year old what he wanted for dinner and Andrew answer “barbequed hamburgers”. Nanna being a grandmother she went out and bought a hibachi and we had our first great Christmas Eve BBQ. Now you must know that the grandparents lived on the 14th floor of a high rise, we had the apartment manager come knocking on the door, barbequing was not allowed on the balconies.

Christmas has always been about family time, my favorite Christmas and most special was 31 years ago and the birth of my son Eric early in the morning of Boxing Day. Leaving my parents home Christmas evening and whispering to my Nannie with a wink, as we had to take her home, that it was time. She got the “wink” right away and didn’t tell anyone.

Of course there’s all the Charlie Brown trees (the best kind) that dad would bring home. Nannies’s shortbread, and to this day my mom’s butter tarts. The family dinner, the table set with the best of the best and the family, friends, neighbors, and of course Grandpa Roger Pickard’s laugh as he lay on the floor playing with all the kids.

The winter activities as a child seemed to always be so much fun “in the day” skating at the old Curling Rink in Harrison and then skiing every possible day up at Hemlock was how I remember the school holidays as a child.

I spent much of my childhood anticipating Christmas. We’d saw off a lopsided tree in the bush, which Dad would fix by drilling holes in the trunk with his old hand drill and inserting branches. There were school parties and a big children’s program at church, followed by long-awaited candy bags - but especially there were presents. have had barbequed hamburgers, even in the cockpit of our sailboat under a tarp, outside in the snow, rain and wind. Our kids are all grown and married and they even have a BBQ sometimes on Christmas Eve, Gerry and I even now have barbequed hamburgers, not always done outside getting a little cold for us to do.

Christmas Eve would start with our favourite meal, Kentucky Fried Chicken. Mom and Dad methodically washed the dishes and tidied up, then read the Christmas story, by which time we were almost mad with excitement.

Finally Mom would hand out the gifts and we all had to watch each one be opened and share their joy, whether feigned or real.

magical time nevertheless. It was about so much more than material things, it was about a secure family, the ideal of the Christ child, the love of parents and a cease-fire between siblings. It was all very special.

I wish, so much, that every kid in BC this Christmas will enjoy a little of what I did.

News “Well, if you really look at it, everything we take care of, and everything we look at, belongs to Band Members.

At Seabird, we like to look at it in terms of how we involve everyone. Our Fire Department does a Hamper Food Drive. They participate. It’s a big part of what they represent. Our Hamper Drive is set up to bring back something to people who don’t have the ability to buy everything they need. We try to involve everybody, not just on Seabird Island, but our extended family too.

I still remember when I was a young boy, probably around the 8th of December, we used to have a dinner here that involved all of the communities. Our people used to have Memories of Christmas: As a youngster... ...assembling handcoloured paper chains for decorating ...figuring out what that gift under the tree was ...participating in a Christmas program As a parent... ...caroling around the neighbourhood with our children and friends ...distributing homemade candy cane cookies ...skating on our backyard ice rink on Christmas Eve

A tradition that keeps repeating itself is the exchange of Christmas cards and/or letters. We have lived in a variety of places during our married life. For 27 years, I have written a letter to share with our family and friends in the various places we have lived.

Best of all is the anticipation of receiving a card or letter in return.

Frequently it is the one time each year we hear from distant friends.

sure we are sitting together with a hot drink, reading about some of the journeys each of our loved ones is on, knowing that the journey God has for each of us is frequently one of waiting and surprises (some painful), but always a journey of hope and peace.

filled the room and the warmth of the fire warmed their toes, Sir Ratford sat and smiled. How nice it was to share his Christmas with all the creatures of Limber’s Mountain. They all came in different shapes, colors and sizes there was Louie the badger, Harry the skunk and Freddy the Frog for just a few.

To all sit together as friends it was a wonderful Christmas gift!

As the creatures sang O Holy Night, a wonderful peace came over Limbert Mountain .The Valley below was quiet on this special night there was a blanket of new snow with the lights from the houses twinkling here and there. Families were sharing the joy of a special birth. A lone star was in the sky over the barn just to remind us all of the humble beginnings of a King.

but the memories of my childhood Christmases keep them close in my heart. Christmas Eve always started with a banquet of food for our family and any of those around us that perhaps did not have a place to go. My Mom, who was of Ukrainian descent, prepared 12 non-meat dishes for us and it included our favorite which was Kutia, a sweet grain pudding. We feasted, sang carols then all went to midnight

The Spirit of Christmas lives through the incredibly thoughtful and generous supporters of Agassiz-Harrison Community Services (AHCS).

Last year AHCS was fortunate to start a program that invited the community at large to help support individuals and families who may not necessarily have the opportunity to celebrate the holiday season, we continued this tradition this year and the community responded! The families who were supported experienced many kinds of emotions along with the volunteers and staff of AHCS. Warm memories have been created with each item donated to this year’s Christmas Hamper program; smiles will creep upon a child’s face when “Santa” has left something under the tree when perhaps this may not have happened prior to the community involvement. Those kinds of smiles and memories can last a lifetime for the parents and the children and Agassiz-Harrison Community Services cannot do it without the very generous support of the community and for this we thank you!

Christmas on Limberts Mountain Sir Ratford the Rabbit sat by the fire drinking his blackberry tea and waiting for his fig cakes to be baked. “My goodness,” he said, "Christmas is almost here! The socks are knit and mittens too for all my friends. The forest tree was decorated in the cornor of the room and a star was twinkling atop while the pine smell filled the air."

A knock came to the door. Sir Ratford opened it to find his dear friends Sam the mouse and Ginny, the Cricket covered in snow. “ Come in my friends and get warm by the fire while I make you some Blackberry tea.”

They were soon warm and cozy in this little home. Again they heard a knock at the door. Sir Ratford went to the door to find all the forest creatures standing in the snow. “Come in my friends”, it’s cold outside.”

As they came in, they My favorite Christmas memory: I am one of a very large family who gathered together not only at Christmas but on every occasion to celebrate the day and to celebrate life! Although later in life, as we chose different paths, we did not gather as much, we continued to enjoy the Christmas season each in our own ways. Most of my family has now left this beautiful earth for a place in Paradise

That was very important. That was their way of sharing back then.

Re: Recent Property Crime in Popkum, BC I am writing to inform the residents of the Popkum/Rosedale area of an increase in property crime between the period of October 1, 2015 and December 8, 2015. This increase is concerning, and as your police of jurisdiction we want to keep our residents informed so steps are taken to target harden your property and prevent further offences from occurring.

There are currently several police investigations into these matters, and to date police have arrested a number of offenders related to thefts in the Popkum area.

It is important for residents to take a proactive approach to ensure their property is safe. Keeping your property lit and valuables out of sight and locked up are two easy steps to deter thieves. The Agassiz RCMP has adopted a new schedule to provide its residents with 24 hour police coverage. The property related offences have been primarily taking place during the overnight hours of Thursday to Sunday. It is very important to report all suspicious activity to police. Reporting has resulted in successfully arresting and charging one offender for stealing gasoline from vehicles in the Rose Garden Estates last week, as well as, identify other potential suspects.

The police utilize a tool referred to as Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).

CPTED is used to target harden residential and business properties.

CPTED has three main principles to guide the property owner.

They are: Natural Surveillance (keeping potential intruders under observation), Natural Access Control, and Territorial Reinforcement. I encourage all to research the CPTED concepts and adopt them to your property.

Do you like to travel at Christmas time?

There is no shortage of opportunities for residents to show their charitable side this holiday season.

Whether it’s a shelter, looking to provide meals and clothing for the homeless, a food bank trying to fill the cupboards of low-income families and individuals, or an animal shelter issuing a desperate plea for help to feed abandoned animals, the need is evident and it seems to be never-ending.

This is the time of year when people tend to dig a little bit deeper to support many worthy causes. It’s the season of giving, and that’s a good thing, because it’s also the season during which want is most keenly felt.

That’s why local agencies such as Agassiz-Harrison Community Services are already planning for next year.

These, and other seasonal efforts, play a crucial role in helping to ensure people with limited means have, at minimum, a hearty meal and a gift or two to unwrap.

But once the lights have been taken down, the tree chipped and the last hot turkey sandwich eaten, we have a tendency to return to our daily routine and think less often about neighbours who may be scraping by.

It’s a constant struggle for food banks, for example, where each Thanksgiving and Christmas — and perhaps at Easter — they see a jump in donations, but are forced to make do for much of the year, when donations slow to a trickle.

The remedy for our collective forgetfulness might be something as simple as a note on each calendar page or arranging a regular pre-paid contribution, via credit card or post-dated cheques.

It makes sense from both a budgeting point of view — smaller regular payments, versus a large lump sum at a time of year when finances are already strained — and in terms of helping the organizations that many depend upon, year-round, to avoid the cycle of feast or famine.

Tom Fletcher NDP leader John Horgan sat down with Tom Fletcher for a yearend interview in his Victoria office Dec. 10. Here are excerpts. For the full version, see the Opinion tab at agassizharrisonobserver.com.

TF: In the recent federal election, national NDP leader Thomas Mulcair rejected the Trans Pacific Partnership sight unseen, endorsing letters from Unifor and CUPE saying this is a bad deal. Is your party seen as against Pacific Rim trade?

JH: No, I don’t think so, and what I said at the time was that I support trade. We’re a tradecentred province. We’re looking across the ocean at the largest market the world has known, and I support getting our products to

higher-priced markets.

But having said that, the B.C. Liberals embraced TPP without even having seen it.

TF: The NDP and unions have historically been protectionist. Do you see any need to modernize the B.C. party?

JH: When it comes to trade, I think we have modernized.

And who was the first premier to go on a trade mission from British Columbia? It was Dave Barrett. And now there has been a succession of premiers make regular visits to other markets to try to stimulate economic activity here at home.

TF: Your party supports the carbon tax now, but not the revenue neutral approach. Do you support increasing the rate?

For me, and I think for most British Columbians, the model that Alberta has adopted of taking revenues and driving them into industries, or activities like transit, that will reduce emissions over time.

TF: Natural gas price and volume continue to go down, along with commodities generally, and supply of oil and gas keeps going up. What's your take on the prospects for LNG after the year we’ve had?

JH: Not good. I’ve always said price will determine whether investors drop down multibillions of dollars in a far-away place to provide a product that is not developed here. Brownfield opportunities have moved very quickly in the U.S. Changing LNG import facilities to export facilities is a whole lot easier and cheaper than starting from scratch.

Dear Editor, I must correct your article on page 4 of the Dec 10th edition.

The headline is incorrect. There is no “Regional Park” being created in Harrison All that is happening is that the province is fulfilling a pledge of provincial lands made many years ago. That pledge was to dedicate their portion of the East Sector to the future Harrison Forest Park. Their land, about 230 acres, will be set aside as a Recreational Site under the Forests and Natural Resources Ministry. A provincial “Rec. Site” is nothing like a Regional District Park. ( I was on the FVRD Park Committee when we formed the Cheam Wetlands Regional Park). The province does not own 300 acres, only the 240 acres noted above in the South and East areas. The Village

of Harrison does not lease any land. We used to lease 77.342 acres alongside McComb Drive.

At the suggestion of my clerk, Malcolm Wright, I obtained title to this while mayor back in about 1979. We, the people of Harrison, own that land.

If any improvements are made in the new year, as stated, they will be late in the new year as neither FVRD or the province have even started the planning process. There has been no public consultation as yet and our own OCP requires a public process. The main North-South trail is called the Bridle Trail, not the Bridal Trail. (Think horses, not weddings) . The Harrison Forest park project did not start in 2012 with Facio. It actually started in about 1984 as part of Harrison’s OCP review. Though

he would like us to think he has achieved something great here, he hasn’t. Instead he continues to work towards the clear cutting and development of the critical Northern block which was pledged to the community as part of the Harrison Forest Park during the OCP adoption process.

The Official Community Plan is still the supreme land-use bylaw in Harrison, despite the mayor`s attempts to dismiss it as irrelevant. That OCP still requires the council (and the FVRD) to work towards the creation of the complete Harrison Forest Park, including the Northern block. It does not call for a smaller, more remote park as an alternative.
