When the train stopped at the station of Little Ingleby, history happened. A girl in a knit toque, and carrying a violin, stepped on the platform. A woman in an ankle-length knit scarf, wrapped twice about her neck, waited on the platform. A wind howled, blowing snow from the oak in a graveyard some miles from the station. It landed on a gravestone which had the surname of Kettle.

Most of the plots did.

Together, these events marked the first time a Kettle stepped onto the platform since a string quartet of Kettle brothers left to make musical fortunes. This was Stormy Kettle, meeting, also for the first time, her great aunt through her mother’s line, Persimmon Kettle.

She insisted Stormy call her Aunt Percy after a scarf-filled embrace and subsequent sequestering into Aunt Percy’s car. A rusty, mud-spattered and round vehicle named Fred. Aunt Percy backed Fred out of the station and moved on to fussing over Stormy’s appearance.

Stormy reassured Aunt Percy she was fine, only to be felled in a swoop of mothering which reminded Stormy of her family back home. Combined with the scenery rumbling past, Stormy fell into a contented daze.

Here the flatlands rose in snowy bumps with bursts of stone cottages and farmhouses that dressed the land in humanity. She felt as a hearth fire, a phrase flickering through her mind. The restlessness present since the days of bedtime stories full of a land of magic flutes and faeries, settled and

slept. Welcome home.

Aunt Percy was on the topic of the Kettle family now. Extolling the talents and quirks of the vast family. Some of whom Stormy would soon meet. She proclaimed Stormy a textbook Kettle, with her thirst for adventure and musical talent as the road tipped down past a pub and turned at the cusp of an oak, with thick roots sprawled out as far as its branches reached high.

A scarecrow in an air force uniform sat beneath, guarding a path toward a field of graves. Up a short, rutted trail squat a brick cottage, covered half in ivy. A wall of holly bushes lined the walkway to a Christmas wreath on the door.

“Come,” said Aunt Percy, “let’s get you fattened and rested. Sure you don’t want an old lady storying your ears off.”

“Don’t mind. I like listening to your stories,” Stormy said, following her great aunt through the front door.

Aunt Percy laughed, “Fiddle us some tunes with your grandfather’s violin and you’ll fit right in.”

Stormy smiled in return and stepped through the door.

Once upon a December, history happened.

A Kettle returned to Little Ingleby. A family reunited and celebrated, over food, drink, story and song.

A wind blew in from the far west, under the hill and beyond the sea, bringing with it strains of strings. Whatever the present said or the future would do, history remembered the time Christmas returned home.

by participating in some local events!

It all started in November when I met my younger sister in town.

She told me that there was a new baby on the way in December and wondered if I would be willing to care for her two little boys, both toddlers, while she was at the hospital.

At that time, new mothers and their babies were kept in the hospital for eight days.

I said, “of course I would,” as I already had six children of my own, so two more wouldn’t be a problem.

My sister and her husband lived 12 miles from the nearest town and the hospital, and that December in Alberta was particularly cold.

On Christmas Eve, my sister told her husband that she thought it was time to go to the hospital. Try as he might, her husband couldn’t get their car started because of the freezing cold, but with the help of a neighbour, my sister got to the hospital at 11:30 p.m. and her husband then dropped their two little boys off at my mother’s (their grandma) in town.

My brother and his wife stopped to see our mother at 11:30 p.m. on their way

to Christmas mass and she asked them if they would take the boys to my house, 11 miles away. They agreed and that was the start of our Christmas Eve excitement.

The two little boys arrived wide eyed and frightened having been woken up in the middle of the night, watched their mommy leave, and had been dropped off at two different places in the space of an hour. They were terrified and started screaming and wouldn’t stop.

I finally took my youngest son out of his crib and put him in my bed and placed the two boys foot-to-foot in the crib and parked it next to the lit-up Christmas tree. They stopped crying and watched the blinking lights until they fell asleep.

Christmas morning, my children woke up early to find what Santa had brought them in their stockings and under the tree.

What a surprise! Santa had brought them two little boys. They all surrounded the crib and wondered what Santa was up to.

It was a happy Christmas and a little girl was born Christmas Day.

Christmas GREETINGS You’re never too old to see Christmas through the eyes of a child.

May all the excitement you felt as a youngster revisit you this Christmas and make this holiday the best one yet!

On Saturday December 21, my wife Joyce, our four children, Michael, Christopher, Crystal & Michelle and I said “Good bye” to my In-Laws as they were returning to Calgary, Alberta. They had come to visit us in Warren, Manitoba for a few days.

Before Grandpa Hans & Grandma Joey left, Grandma had taken the children to the local grocery store and purchased a bag of carrots for Santa’s Reindeer.

Sunday morning as we were getting the children ready to head into the city, for Church, I received a phone call.

The conversation went something like this…

“Hello this is Santa. I know how to get to your place from the air, but as the Reindeer are resting up for the big day, I would like to get directions to your place from the highway.”

I gave him the directions. About 45 minutes later, a small white car pulled into our driveway. From the passenger side, out stepped “Santa.” Along with three helpers, they unloaded the car with boxes of food and toys for the children. As they left, we gave Santa the bag of carrots.

Joyce and I initially suspected this surprise came from her parents Hans and Joey.

However, upon closer inspection, one item indicated that it was NOT their doing. It was a jar of homemade jam.

To this day, 25 years later, we still have no idea who sent this wonderful gift. We are still awed by God’s Greatness and Mercy.

always told me I had to be in bed asleep before Santa would come.

We had been listening to the reports of where Santa Clause was. When we heard he was about 8 1/2 blocks away I told everyone to go home. Before going to bed, I put my stuffed Reindeer Rudolf by the fireplace on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Morning I made a beeline for the livingroom and when I looked at Rudolf, he looked so tired, so I asked my Mum and Dad why. My Mum then said “No wonder Rudolf looks so tired, he has been guiding Santa’s sleigh all night,” which satisfied me.

I would have time to play with my toys before we went to my Dad’s Parents to join them and my Aunt, Uncle and cousins for Christmas Lunch. After Lunch we would watch TV and talk before having to leave to go to my other Grandparents for Christmas Dinner.

Present there were my Grandparents, Aunts, Uncle and cousins. By this time I was stuffed having had 2 Christmas Meals!

Both my Grandmas were the same and told you to eat up. No wonder I was a Chubby little kid!!!

All my Family has passed away now and being an only child Christmas is so different and a very sad time for me.

Lizzy and Sandy were both having a lot of fun skating ‘round and ‘round on the frozen lake, squealing and laughing with their friends. The grade six children were having gym class.

Skating fun had been promised to them the week before by Mr. Adamson their gym teacher. Now the kids were enjoying winter fun.

“Hey, watch where you’re going,” Lizzie cried out as Dustin bumped into her. He had done this a second time in a short while.

Dustin sped off showing a big smirk on his face.

“Dustin likes you Lizzy,” Sandy said.

“That’s why he’s doing that to you. He wants your attention. I overheard Dustin say to

“I know he’s cute and everything but he can sure be a pain,” Lizzy answered.

“Look, here he comes again,” Sandy said, pointing to where Dustin appeared to be coming right for them.

“I’m out of here,” Lizzy said.

“Me too. Let’s join Jessica on the bench after we get some hot chocolate.”

“OK Sandy, good plan.”

Both girls went to where the booth was and each got a hot chocolate with loose change they had jingling in their pockets.

They both then joined Jessica, who was a good friend of their’s and had been sitting on a bench by herself.

“I saw that Dustin bumped into you a couple of times Lizzy,” Jessica said smiling, her cheeks rosy red from the cold. “Dustin loves Lizzy,” Jessica called out giggling.

“Cut it out and stuff your face with some more marshmallows,” Lizzy replied.

“Should we tease her some more Sandy?”

Jessica asked.

“We could,” Sandy replied, grinning broadly. Jessica was about to say something else as she gazed upon the lake at the skaters.

Instead she said “Hey, who’s that,” pointing toward a girl she had never met before.

Lizzy looked toward where her friend was pointing and echoed her, “Hey, who’s she?”

The strange girl they saw was skating faster than anyone else on the ice. She was doing jumps and twirling around real fast. No one else in the class could skate like that.

“Wow,” Lizzy said. “Who is she and how’d she ever learn to skate like that.?”

“Her name’s Josey,” Sandy began saying.

“She’s new at school. Jessica and I along with some other kids talked to her a bit. She told us things about herself including that she has

won several trophies for her ice skating! She used to live in Vancouver with her family.

Her father lost his job in the big city so they came to Ellentown hoping he could find work as a carpenter here.”

Just then Mr. Adamson blew his whistle and called out, “Alright class it’s three o’clock.

Everyone off the ice. It’s time to go back to school. Those of you who have borrowed skates from our supply room must return them!”

Kids skated off the ice and began unlacing their skates. Then swinging their skates over they shoulders, began walking back to school.

“Hey, here comes Josey,” Jessica said.

“Let’s walk with her.”

“OK,” Sandy agreed.

The three girls waited for Josey to catch up to them and introduced Lizzy to her.

They began talking about all sorts of things.

Lizzy gave Josey a compliment on the wonderful way she could skate. The girls then told Josey about an upcoming skating competition that was going to be held here in town at the local rink. They said that she should definitely participate and that she could most likely be the winner.

“Thanks,” Josey began. “I already asked my dad about it. He says we have to spend our money only on necessary things from now on. He hasn’t found work yet or else I could take part.”

The class reached the school and everyone turned in the skates who had borrowed from there. Then the school bell rang ending the day. Some children began boarding yellow buses, which drove away, taking them home.

www.vernonmorningstar.com Josey was and how it was too bad she can’t be in the ice skating competition. There was also talk around school saying it’s too bad Josey can’t compete.

The days seemed to pass slowly. Then it was the night of the competition. Bleachers were packed with people. Everyone excitedly talked about who might win and who they’re voting for. Lizzy, Sandy and Jessica filled their mouths with popcorn and drank Coke.

Just then the lights dimmed. Colourful light above the ice turned on and a loud speaker blared out, “Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the Ellentown Skating Competition!”

A few other things were said. Then the competition began. Skater after skater danced across the ice. All were applauded.

At the end a seventeen-year-old girl from the village of Sansville was awarded first prize.

The audience stood as they applauded her success.

People left the auditorium talking excitedly at how the evening went.

It had turned into a cold December accompanied by a chilling winter storm.

Lots more snow had fallen covering city streets. The storm died down for Christmas Eve. Lizzy was at home Christmas Eve evening on the couch anxious to rip into a present.

Lizzy’s mom Linda was saying “Remember you can open only one present tonight. It’s not Christmas Day yet!”

“I know,” Lizzy said, as she began opening a brightly wrapped gift she had on her lap.

Meanwhile at Josey’s house she and her parents had just finished a late dinner. They were seated in the living room. Josey was also allowed to open one gift on Christmas Eve. She was just about to do that when the door bell rang.

“I’ll get it,” Paul, Josey’s father said rising from his chair. “Don’t open your gift until I’m back.”

A few minutes later Josey was surprised to see Lizzy with both her parents following Paul back into the living room. Lizzy introduced herself and her parents Mark and Linda to everyone. Then she set a brightly wrapped square gift down into Josey’s lap saying “Merry Christmas!”

“Thank you Lizzy! What is it?”

“Open it and see,” Lizzy said, a great big smile on her face.

Josey tore into the paper. There in the box was a lovely pair of brand new ice skates.

“The skates were our gift to Lizzy,” Mark began. “But she insisted that you have them Josey! Lizzy wanted to come over and give them to you right away so here we are.”

“Your mom and I are both very proud of you, Lizzy.”

“Thanks,” Lizzy said, slightly blushing.

“Oh Lizzy,” Josey said. “How extremely kind of you giving me such a lovely gift, especially since it was supposed to be yours.

You’re a wonderful friend! How can I ever thank you!”

“Just use your talent and skate, Josey.

That’s how you can thank me!”

After Christmas Josey’s father Paul landed a very good position as a carpenter in a big company in town. Her mother Sheila got a position working at the local paper. The family happily had two incomes.

Josey got back into skating lessons and won several tough competitions around the province. After school she became a certified skating instructor. Both Lizzy and Jessica married and had children. They stayed in town and their children had skating lessons for the fun of it, all of course given by Josey.

Cecelta White and Denise Ziemer with Arbonne Cosmetics were bringing awareness to their Adopt- A Grandparent program during the Shoparama holiday gift sale at the Vernon Recreation Centre. Cecelta (left) and her daughter decided last year to do some giving back at Christmas and knew seniors were often forgotten at this time of year, especially those in long term care. White heard about a program that some consultants had initiated in their home towns with the Arbonne Company and decided to bring the idea to Vernon. Through donations from individuals and companies in the community there was enough to give every resident in Gateby a gift Christmas day. Her family delivered them personally to the residents and it was a tremendous experience for everyone.

“Let’s play one of our special games,” Nicky suggested to Vicky, as he and his twin sister skipped along the city sidewalk one Saturday morning, on the way to their grandmother’s house.

“What should we play?” – Vicky hesitated, and tilted her head to one side. Then suddenly her nose began to wiggle. It kept on wiggling, and wouldn’t stop.

“We could walk down Market Street and play ‘Follow Your Nose!’ It is almost winter holiday time, and there will be lots of delicious smells coming from the food stores.

Also, it is close to Grandmas, so let’s go!”

Vicky was eager to start.

Nicky’s nose began to wiggle in reply, and together they crossed the intersection. Soon the children came to Market Street.

It was lined on both sides with bakery

Soon a dog began to follow Nicky and Vicky, and wiggled its nose. As they promenaded along the street, more dogs joined them, and all the dogs wiggled their noses and (wiggled their tails too).

Then Nicky and Vicky looked behind them, and saw all the children wiggling their noses and following the dogs. Everyone danced and laughed and wiggled their noses as they skipped along the street (and the dogs wiggled their tails, too).

Then all the merchants and customers joined the parade, wiggling their noses as they accompanied the children and dogs.

Everyone had fun, giggling and wiggling, and the dogs giggled and wiggled their noses (and wiggled their tails, too).

Several young children sat behind tiny tables outside some of the shop doors, inviting customers to buy their candies and popcorn.

Nicky took the left side, and Vicky rushed over to the right. The game rules were to walk slowly past the shops, and make a mental record of all the different aromas they smelled. Then they would share their adventures with grandmother.

The twins giggled and wiggled their noses when they passed the shops. But some merchants were grumpy and chased the twins with brooms. Others just smiled.

Vicky made a picture in her mind of each place and each smell. It was fun to visit the market, and occasionally a pleasant merchant would hand them a small piece of food to sample. There were so many delicious aromas coming from the stores.

They rushed to ring the doorbell.

“Come in!” Grandma called from inside.

She was sitting in her rocking chair. Only her grey hair and part of her forehead was visible, because she was busy reading, and kept the large book in front of her face.

www.vernonmorningstar.com dingle and tell me the cookies have finished baking. It will be soon, and then you can help me prepare more baking.” Grandma liked to read whenever she was waiting for something.

“Our noses led us here, and some friends have come to join us!” The twins giggled and looked back outside to the yard where all the dogs, children, merchants and customers stood waiting, all of them wiggling their noses and enjoying the delicious aroma floating from Grandma’s kitchen (the dogs wiggled their tails too).

“Are you wiggling your nose Grandma?” the grandchildren asked.

But Grandma was too engrossed in reading that she didn’t even hear or see them, or all the dogs, children and merchants giggling and wiggling their noses and peeping in the window and door. She was much too busy reading a very interesting story.

The twins, the children, the dogs, merchants and customers became worried.

Everyone was wiggling their noses, except Grandma, because her nose was missing.

Nicky and Vicky looked at Grandma. The only part of her face that was visible was her hair and forehead. “Oh Grandma, what has happened to your nose?”

All the dogs, the children and the merchants and customers began to help the

twins in searching for Grandma’s nose. They peered under the table, under the chairs, under the carpet, behind the door. But it was nowhere to be found.

Everyone stopped giggling and wiggling their noses because they thought something terrible had happened to Grandma’s nose.

Suddenly, the oven timer bell dingled.

Grandma removed her nose from inside the book, rose from her chair and took a big pan of cookies out of the oven.

All the noses of the children, dogs, merchants and customers began to wiggle again, and Grandma wiggled her nose too as she laughed and invited everyone to have a holiday cookie. They greeted each other and everyone was glad of the nose game, and Grandma’s delicious cookies.

Then the merchants, the customers, the town children and the dogs all said “Thank you!” to Grandma. They all wiggled their noses (and the dogs wiggled their tails too) and enjoyed the cookies on the way back to the market.

Then Nicky and Vicky helped Grandma bake a lot of special food for holiday time.

“Grandma if your nose ever gets lost again, we will know where to look,” said Nicky.

“Inside a book of course!” added Vicky, as she handed her grandmother a favourite recipe book and everyone laughed.

Christmas was always a special time in our home, although one in particular stands out in my mind. That year I was faced with a reality that was overwhelming for a seven year old. This was my first Christmas knowing that Santa was actually Mom and Dad. My Mom did her best the year before to keep it from me, as she had with my older brothers and sisters in the past.

All the preparations were as I remembered them; Mom had made shortbread, chocolate rolls and other treats that were a favorite in our house. Our tree had been adorned with the macaroni and paper decorations we had all so carefully labored over. It was Christmas Eve at last and our family had just come back from Midnight Mass. Earlier in the evening, my Dad had succumbed to another family tradition; that being the opening of one gift each on Christmas Eve. Then, even though we were all still excited – sleep finally came.

Christmas morning my eyes were drawn under the tree to the most beautiful long haired cat you could imagine. She had blue eyes and her fur was the prettiest shade of pink. My new friend also doubled as a pajama bag and I was to cherish her for

many years. I have a passion for cats which I have never outgrown. Eventually I did get the real thing from my parents but for me that Christmas was very special. I was so worried that knowing about Santa would take the magic out of Christmas and instead I learned who it was that always put those magic touches into Christmas.

Thinking back, I always wonder what my parents went without so they could see all of our faces light up with joy on Christmas morning. I will always wonder how they knew I wanted a cat like the one I got; I know Santa would have known but I think it was amazing that my parents knew!

That Christmas was many years ago. My cat has long since departed my possession.

My parents and one brother are no longer with us either. They all have a special place in my heart and there are still times when I miss them very much. Those are the times when I think of that Christmas and remember the magic that filled a little girl. That magic is still with me and I have passed it onto my son so he too has beautiful memories of Christmas and a loving family. He married his high school sweetheart this past June and hopefully they too will pass on the magic of Christmas.

On Boxing Day, December 26, 1991, I was baking some cookies for my family, my husband Bill, and our children Michael, Christopher, Crystal, and Michelle.

Bill had gone into Winnipeg, to pick up his two boys Wayne & Dennis for the day.

The timer had gone off and Wayne graciously (on his own) took the cookies out of the oven. I then put the turkey into the oven.

Bill and I had made plans with another family to go to a local farm and go for a hayride. Therefore, off we all went for an afternoon of fun.

A few hours later, we arrived home.

When we opened the door, I expected the rewarding wonderful smell of cooking turkey. However, that did not happen. When Wayne had taken the cookies out of the oven, he had also turned it off. Therefore, when I went to put the turkey in the oven,

it was still hot.

I reheated the oven, and put the turkey back in. As the boys had to return to the city, we did not have choice but to take them out for a bite to eat.

When we returned home, the turkey was cooked. As we were full from dinner, we did not eat it. We had made plans to spend the weekend away from home, so I put the turkey outside in Mother Nature’s freezer.

Upon arriving home a few days later, my turkey was spoiled. Who knew that Manitoba would have a thaw?

The unfortunate part about this story was that it was actually the first time I cooked a turkey. The fortunate part is that it was NOT the last time.

24 years later, I can still smile and enjoy the story.
