Donalda & District Museum

The Donalda & District Museum is a mustsee! Situated in the heart of the historic Village of Donalda, northeast of Red Deer and northeast of Stettler, the museum houses 1,000 oil burning lamps dating from 1600 to 1960, the Whitford collection of Metis artifacts, and over 4,000 pioneer artifacts depicting the history of Donalda.

Incorporated in 1912, Donalda was a central place in the rich farming area, serving homesteaders who came to the village for supplies and brought their produce, including milk and eggs to town to the Donalda Co-operative Creamery from 1924. Banking took place at the Imperial Bank of Canada (originally the Bank of Montreal from 1928 to 1932) and passengers and goods embarked and disembarked from the Canadian Northern Railway station (brought from Saskatchewan to replace the original Canadian Northern Station which was torn down). These heritage buildings contribute to the history and character of Donalda.

A visit to Donalda is definitely worth the trip!

INNISFAIL DISTRICT HISTORICAL VILLAGE

The Innisfail & District Historical Village’s mandate is to promote the preservation, interpretation and enjoyment of local history. We do this in as fun a way as possible for our visitors.

Various events throughout the year cater to young and old alike set in almost three interesting acres of land. The flower and vegetable gardens are blossoming with colour in the summer months, making this an ideal location for weddings and photos. Our tea room is a wonderful location for birthdays, anniversaries and family reunions. We also have a large covered picnic shelter.

Every year there’s something new and this year we have updated our ice cream parlour, where we serve very delicious $1 cones, along with other treats.

The Heritage Room has some interesting changes and there are more exciting things to coming to the Village. We are also going to do a drama program one week during the summer and we have school tours in the spring. Our first Progressive Supper in conjunction with the Jungle U-Pick and Danish Canadian National Museum was such a hit last year

we’re doing it again this year. We’re also holding our biannual Quilt show, with beautiful quilts displayed throughout the Village. Our Friday teas feature a variety of different themes each week to display our artifacts that are rarely seen. HISTORIC MARKERVILLE is a quaint hamlet, nestled on the banks of the Medicine River, established in 1888 by Icelandic pioneers and located just 30 minutes SW of Red Deer.

It is home to three historic sites including the Markerville Creamery Museum, built in 1902 and restored to its 1932 appearance. Guided tours, with costumed interpreters, are offered through the butter making process, a beautiful courtyard with picnic tables and interactive mini-barn with milking cows for kids of all ages.

MUSEUMS IN THE CITY OF LACOMBE Experience Lacombe’s unique architecture and visit three museums located in the City’s historic Edwardian downtown. The Flatiron building is a beautiful Edwardian building built in 1904 was home to the Merchants Bank of Canada, Lacombe’s first bank. Today, the main floor and basement of this architectural landmark are home to the Flatiron Museum & Interpretive Centre. This summer and fall, a special exhibit on WWI and Home will be on display.The Michener House Museum is located in the oldest surviving home in Lacombe dating back to 1894. The house was the first Manse built in the community as well as the birthplace of Roland Michener, Canada’s 20th Governor General from 1967-1974. The museum showcases items relating to the Michener Family as well as local artifacts dating from the beginning of the 20th century and that reflect the period when the house was a Manse. Free guided walking tours of the murals and historic downtown take place daily June to August at 2pm.Built in 1902, the Blacksmith Shop Museum is the oldest operational Blacksmith Shop in Alberta today. Watch the coal fire burn in the shop’s original forge and hear the old anvil ring. Live demonstrations will take place from 11am to 4pm on: Canada Day July 1, Lacombe Days July 25-26, Alberta Open Farm Days August 23-23, and the Lacombe Culture & Harvest Festival September 26-27 this summer. The Laft Hus has a growing collection of antiques and replicas of items used by Norwegian immigrants. Courses are offered to the public in Norwegian arts, crafts and cooking.
