A Maple Ridge man who works as Metro Vancouver longshoreman said the federal transport minister unfairly revoked his security clearance over unsubstantiated allegations of criminal associations, including a handshake with a Hells Angel back in 2008.

And Shamshinder Singh Sidhu said he’s lost work opportunities at Port Metro Vancouver because he no longer has the pass needed for some jobs on the waterfront.

Sidhu’s lawyer Allison Tremblay told Federal Court Judge Simon Fothergill that the minister’s decision in Sidhu’s case didn’t consider his explanation of the allegations made.

Sidhu, 40, has been a casual worker at the port since 2008.

He obtained his Marine Transportation Security Clearance at the time and got it renewed in 2013. Then last year, Transport Canada wrote to him, saying his clearance was being reconsidered because of a police report noting five incidents of concern between 2008 and 2011.

For a few months during their childhood, Clay and Abraham Gagnon’s family went through what Clay described as a rough patch.

They had to rely on the local food bank for help, and memories of how the community organization assisted them still serves as a partial motivator for what these brothers do today.

As owners of Whonnock Roofing, they give back to the community where they were born and raised. And they’re giving back in pretty major way – in fact – this holiday season, said Mary Robson, executive director of the Friends In Need Food Bank.

Backed by a team of staff and family members, the Gagnon brothers arrived at the Save-OnFoods store at Valley Fair Mall on Tuesday morning, ready to shop.

And shop they did – to the tune of more than $5,000, with every bit of the food immediately going to the food bank.

For 10 of the past 11 years, the Whonnock Roofers have taken half a day off from work/ school and gone shopping – in this fashion – for the local food bank.

year, because the company gave large donations to a number of other community endeavours, they were back to help out Friends In Need this Christmas, Clay explained.

They met for the annual White Spot breakfast just before the morning shop, where they were each given their assignments, mass quantities of caffeine, some sustenance, and a shopping list of the top 10 items needed by the food bank.

When they arrived at the store, they donned elf and Santa hats, grabbed shopping carts, and were off.

For the better part of a halfhour, the blue-sweatered elves divided into smaller teams and

hit the aisles of Save-On in search of non-perishable food for the Friends In Need Food Bank.

While the largest single year of food donations in past topped $6,500, this year they bought $5,012.01 worth of groceries – which actually propelled them over the $50,000 mark in total food donations to Friends in Need through all their years.

Choking up a bit with emotion, Clay said he and his brother look forward to this adventure every year.

“I think I get more out of this...

It feels so good to give back,” he said.

It’s not about receiving anything, Abraham added. “It’s all about giving. It’s nice to give back to people who can’t give…

that’s a true gift.”

After the shopping was done, all the food was transferred from regular shopping carts into eight huge storage tubs on wheels.

And, once the bill was paid, the team then wheeled the donations through the Valley Fair Mall parking lot and back to the food bank warehouse off 227th Street.

“He’s really weak, so the more he pushes himself around, the weaker he gets,” Steeves said, regarding his brother. “Now he has carpel tunnel in both wrists.”

Incorporated in July, the Hammond Compassionate Society is a non-profit group that tries “to get people to donate to us to help out the poor,” Wood explained.

The society is also filling food hampers for five families in need, in Maple Ridge.

“People can come here and donate, or phone and we can pick up,” Wood said.

The hampers will be delivered to the families on either Dec. 20 or 21, Wood elaborated.

With the holiday season in full swing, Ridge Meadows RCMP are out in force to deter incidents of drivers being impaired by alcohol while operating their vehicle.

“It is far better to plan a safe ride, or way to get home before drinking,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. Brenda Winpenny.

“Ridge Meadows RCMP will be conducting enhanced road safety initiatives over the holiday season focused on deterring impaired driving.”

Impaired Driving is still a leading cause of car crash fatalities in B.C. (according to ICBC statistics).

An average of 23 people die in alcohol related crashes in the Lower Mainland every year, “a totally preventable statistic.”

Slow down Ridge Meadows RCMP have a simple message to all motorists: Slow down.

Incidents of excessive speed have more

than doubled since 2014, and “ Ridge Meadows RCMP are noticing a concerning increase in the number of drivers exceeding the speed limit by dangerous levels,” said Cpl. Brenda Winpenny.

“So far this year, Ridge Meadows RCMP officers have charged 242 drivers for excessive speed, which means they were travelling at more than 40 km/h over the posted speed limit.”

This number is up from 104 charges in 2014.

Under the Immediate Roadside Prohibition program drivers trav-

eling 40 km/h over the speed limit will have their vehicles immediately impounded.

This means a seven day vehicle impound, along with a monetary fine between $368 and $483.

“Unfortunately it seems that we need to remind people regularly that certain actions can have deadly consequences – excessive speed is a factor that dramatically increases the likelihood of being in a collision,” said Winpenny.

“There is simply no excuse for this behavior as it put the lives of everyone using our roads at risk.”

Two caught Ridge Meadows RCMP arrested a 28-year-old Langley man, after locating him in a stolen vehicle Tuesday night.

Police located the stolen occupied Nissan parked behind businesses in the 11400 block of Kingston Street. The vehicle had been reported stolen to Surrey RCMP. > More: mrtimes.com

Maple Ridge City councillor Corisa Bell is “supportive of building a new pool 100 per cent.”

Bell made the comments during a special meeting last week, held to review the Leisure Centre aquatic area upgrade project.

Maple Ridge council voted to move forward with a more detailed examination of a site, concept plan, public engagement, and approval process for a new aquatic facility.

As part of that meeting, the decision was also made to abandon the tender process around the proposed $5.3-million renovation of the existing facility to ensure that it remains fully available to the community.

During the discussion, council was provided with an alternative proposal whereby the work could be phased in such a way that there would be access to the competition pool during parts of the construction process.

However, the most heavily used part of the facility, the leisure pool and hot tub area, would still remain unavailable to the public for one year.

“I thank staff for their work to bring us an alternative timeline to the project that was

Council decided that the best course of action is to begin the work that would see a new facility built in the community, she furthered.

“This approach allows us to look at the best long term plan to deal with our existing Leisure Centre aquatic facility without any artificial deadlines and minimal impact to the community,” Read added.

“I’m really happy that we’re looking at a new aquatic facility before closing this one,” said Councillor Kiersten Duncan.

Giving is a gift in itself

T

he holidays are more than an obligation to give to others.

They are also an opportunity to give to others.

It is very easy to feel overwhelmed during the holiday season. Between work or school, family commitments, and the added stress of Christmas shopping, decorating, cooking, travel or welcoming relatives, it is all too easy to throw up your hands say ‘To heck with it!”

The urge to simply crawl into a hole – or at least a bundle of blankets on the couch – and watch terrible movies on Netflix until the season is over is understandable.

But rather than withdrawing, carve out a little time, or a few dollars, and reach out to do something for someone else this holiday season.

The Salvation Army is, as always, looking for more people to crew its kettles around the community. Various food banks, Christmas Bureaus, empty stocking drives, and blanket and coat drives are all crying out for help in the form of last-minute donations.

Giving back to the community, for many people, is seen as an obligation. At community newspapers, we see hundreds of ordinary local people every year who have volunteered their time and energy for everything from fundraising for disease research to helping pet shelters to aiding the homeless.

As diverse as their interests are, they almost always give the same response when asked why they do it.

“I wanted to give back.”

Most of us in Canada are astonishingly fortunate. We live in a technologically advanced, wealthy, and prosperous society. Most of us are doing okay, even if it often seems as if we’re just scraping by.

When we give to others, we give to ourselves. We give to the communities we live in, making them better places for our own and future generations. We gain the gift of new friends from our charity efforts. We gain the satisfaction of knowing that we are part of a wider community whose members care for one another.

What better gift could there be?

And then it hit me.

And I was embarrassed.

Those piddly winds were as bad as they usually get around here. And all they did was prune a few branches out of the old fir tree out back.

Once or twice we were out of power for a few hours.

Big deal.

People with far fewer resources than we have at our disposal have their houses turned into kindling by tornadoes and hurricanes.

And bombs.

Our bombs.

Now, I find that personally embarrassing.

I find it even more embarrassing than realizing that I’m griping to myself about having to pick up a few sticks and twigs.

I can’t even imagine how embarrassed people must feel when they catch themselves griping about the efforts other people are making to start whole new lives after a human storm has completely destroyed their homes.

I can’t imagine how embarrassing it must be to realize that you want to help our homeless people before helping Syrian refugees – because you’ve only ever done little or nothing to help the homeless because you don’t understand them, and you understand those refugees even less.

How embarrassing is it to know you’re not even honest enough to say it out loud?

This is Christmas, folks.

Not that it should be any different any other time of year, mind you, but really, we shouldn’t be embarrassing ourselves at Christmas.

We shouldn’t just be wishing happiness for people at this time of year. We should be putting some effort into it to make it happen. It doesn’t have to be a lot. We all have things to do.

But for instance, we could make a small effort to help someone – anyone – who has less than we have.

There have been a number of pedestrian-versus-vehicle crashes in the community lately.

After two teens were hit late last week, many readers offered their two cents worth... “ I’m not placing blame on anyone, but it’s a 50% shared responsibility. I see many peds walking on a red hand and not looking for cars. So before you place blame on drivers think about the other side of the story.”

They give a good idea where the student excels and where remedial help is needed.

It serves this purpose to the teacher and parents to intervene early in the child’s education.

When children enters the “real world” they are faced with annual reviews of their work.

Their employer usually has no idea if they volunteer or helping people in need.

It’s nonsense to say that because students strive to excel and enjoy seeing a grade of their labour, that they wouldn’t care about the needy or have values.

Encourage and aid all students to strive to be all they can academically and altruistically.

Children owed school marks Dear Editor, I fully agree with Kathryn Witwicki, and do not support Dan Banov’s comments [Letter grades do not measure values, Dec. 10 Letters, Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows TIMES].

I have three children in elementary – Grades 6, 5, and 3.

In my view, the current no-grades report card provides a soft touch for children who are struggling without giving them the harsh realities.

What about the kids who are doing well and only get “applying” because there is no further recognition?

Letter grades acknowledge where a child is at and how he or she can improve.

Everyone can improve, but the no-grades report card does not acknowledge exceeding.

How are kids supposed to strive to be better when they receive a pat on the back for just knowing what they should know?

How do you motivate kids to study harder and get better marks so they can better their future?

Elementary school gives the foundation for learning, studying and succeeding. The children are owed grades that reflect their efforts in school.

If they don’t like their grade, then guess what, start working harder.

Any one can be a low-paid worker, but those that work hard and are recognized for their efforts will be the ones to succeed in their future.

“This whole thing has been an eye opener–I feel like I’m getting the biggest gift of all to be honest with you,” she said.

One gentleman asked for a pair of runners and will be receiving hiking boots, Lalina said, and two woman wanted makeup which has been donated by Sephora.

Two men asked for guitars, which were donated by Brad Nial and The F-Jam Facebook group, Lalina added.

“Their wishes have come true,” Lalina said, adding that generous donations were made by both friends and “complete strangers.”

Lalina will be delivering the wrapped gifts to the shelter on Dec. 18.

“It’s really nice to see that the effort is specific to the needs of the folks there and the wishes that they have,” said Sean Spears, associate director of Rain City Housing.

“We really appreciate the support from the community.”

The CP Holiday Train has left the station in Montreal, Que., and is chugging along on time to be stopping in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows on Dec. 18.

The train is set to stop at the Port Haney 22441 Dewdney Trunk Rd. MAPLE RIDGE Station at 7:30 p.m., and continue to the Harris Road Crossing in Pitt Meadows at 8:45 p.m.

In Pitt Meadows, the train will open on both sides so audiences on either side of the track can see the live performance by Canadian musicians Jim Cuddy, Devin FIrefighters present bucks Cuddy and Kelly Prescott.

Rockin’ rail cars roll in The CP Holiday Train rolls into town in aid of the local Friends in Need Food Bank.

The CP Holiday Train has left the station in Montreal, Que., and is chugging along on time to be stopping in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows on Dec. 18.

The train is set to stop at the Port Haney Station at 7:30 p.m., and continue to the Harris Road Crossing in Pitt Meadows at 8:45 p.m.

In Pitt Meadows, the train will open on both sides so audiences on either side of the track can see the live performance by Canadian musicians Jim Cuddy, Devin Cuddy and Kelly Prescott.

This year will be the second year the train’s route includes the Harris Road stop.

In October, Pitt Meadows council announced that they would be unable to foot the bill for the event’s estimated cost of $2,500, which would pay for a traffic management plan and flagging crew.

“The staff comment was that we have no budget for that kind of expense,” Mayor John Becker said.

In early December, a $3,500 donation was made by now-retired entrepreneur Mike Scarlett towards A Pitt Meadows Christmas and the CP Holiday Train.

A portion of his donation – $1,500 – completely covered the costs required for the crossing at Harris Road, according to Mary Robson, executive director of the Friends in Need Food Bank.

come on board and help this wonderful event,” Robson said.

“I think it’s a credit to the community to step up and fund community events... I think that’s a good thing,” Becker said.

With Scarlett’s donation, money collected on Friday night that otherwise would have gone to recoup an expected deficit, will now instead go directly to the food bank.

“It’s not so much for me; the kids love that train.” Scarlett said.

“Everybody gets festive [and] everybody’s in a good mood and it’s extra special… especially for a small community like Pitt Meadows.”

Leading up to the train’s trip across Canada, Robson said, the staff at CP Railway raise funds that are then divided between about 150 stops.

FIrefighters present bucks Friends in Need Food Bank is the beneficiary of both stops, and last year was presented with a $14,000 total.

The food bank will also be collecting non-perishable food items or cash donations at both of this year’s stops.

Friends In Need will also be presented with money collected by the Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge fire crews during their annual Firefighters for Families food and toy drive on Dec. 12. > See related story on page A13

Red Nose being kept busy Operation Red Nose has broken two records this season, so far.

The service also caters to multiple-stops, Shopland added, as long as seats with seatbelts are available for the two required ORN volunteers.

This season, the average donation is $20, Shopland said, with New Years Eve typically the busiest night for the service.

Last year, ORN gave 77 rides on Dec. 31, shy of the record of 93 rides in 2012.

Money raised goes to PacificSport Fraser Valley Athletics, an organization that supports amateur and elite athletes in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and surrounding locations.

ORN services are running from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Dec. 18, 19 and 31.

Operation Red Nose (ORN) Ridge-Meadows kicked off a busy holiday season getting community members – and their vehicles – home safely, breaking a few records along the way.

The volunteers at ORN beat the previous record of 19 rides given on opening night in 2012, with 20 residents brought safely to their homes on Nov. 27.

ORN, stationed out of Maple Ridge Towing, has also broke the record for the number of volunteering helping the cause, with 41 volunteers on Dec. 11, compared to 35 volunteers in 2014.

Christmas cactus hate heat

Dear Anne,

three times a week for several months after being moved. Grey water is fine for hellebores.

Adding some manure or compost to the hole would help both for nutrition and water retention. Bonemeal would also be useful.

I have had this Christmas plant for many years and it used to flower in December. For the past two years it has stopped flowering. I gave it plant food, but still no flowers. I had it in the basement all year round facing south. How can I get it to flower again?

he best time to move hellebores is right after the flowers die back. That’s usually in the spring. But that’s only good if we have normal rainfall in the spring. If next year’s summer drought starts early, will you be able to keep it watered often?

Hellebores hate being moved and take a very long time to recover. As I recall, Pat, you have sandy, gravelly soil that’s normally fast-draining unless you load it up with manure or compost.

If your hellebore is a Hellebore orientalis, these are the most drought-tolerant of any of them. But it may still need to be watered two or

I have a houseplant which is supposed to be a split-leaf philodendron. It has lots of new leaves but only three have split. My last philodendron had masses of leaves that split. How can I nudge this one into action?

It probably stopped flowering because of heat and blistering sun from the two years of long summer droughts we’ve had.

In hot summers, they need to stand in a shadier spot.

Christmas cactus like warm but not hot places.

They don’t object to occasional bright light, but long spells of strong sunshine make them sick.

Though Christmas cactus is from South America, it’s not a true cactus. It’s a rainforest plant (epiphyte) used to growing on trees and rocks in humid air and partial shade.

Their food comes from debris falling from trees and liquid comes from rain and mist on the foliage.

Regular fertilizer is okay, but they don’t need much. Every couple of months in the growing season is ANNE MARRISON enough. Christmas cactus roots are mainly hold-fasts so foliar fertilizer diluted and sprayed on the leaves also works well.

They mustn’t sit in liquid or their roots could rot. So it’s best to wait till they’ve dried out for a few days then water.

plit leaf philodendrons don’t usually split much until they’re mature.

But also the right light level is important. If the light is too dim, they may not split. But direct, hot sun burns the leaves.

The ideal window would have bright light but your philodendron should not feel the sun on itself.

If all you have is south or west windows, you could position your philodendron farther into the room away from the window.

The alternative may be choosing the least dim window you have and waiting for it to mature.

Tree chipping integral to new playground Public art Fundraising for phase two of a Harry Hooge Elementary playground begins Jan. 2.

It takes a village to raise a child – and likewise to raise a playground for said child to frolic in – or so it would seem.

It took a team of more than 20 Harry Hooge parents eight hours to erect a new playground at the 230th Street elementary school on a Saturday in early December.

But, the project actually took years of planning and fundraising, and literally hundreds of volunteer hours by hundreds of people, to transform from a dream to a reality.

It is a project that first took root some five years ago, and is still expected to take another three or four years to fully complete, explained Natalie McConkey, vice-president of the Harry Hooge Elementary parent advisory council (PAC).

“I went to the first PAC meeting in 2012 when my son [Roman, now eight and in Grade 3] started kindergarten, just to see what it was about. But I wasn’t going to get involved with anything. I left that meeting as chair of the playground replacement committee –

lol,” McConkey told The TIMES. “I couldn’t stand the idea of the kids not having a place to play,” she added.

There were some funds put aside for this project five years ago, knowing the existing playground would need to be replaced.

But the PAC didn’t start seriously planning and fundraising until fall 2012, when McConkey took the helm. “[The previous playground] was more than 20 to 25 years old, made of wood, and com-

pletely rotten,” she explained.

“Parts have been removed from it over the last several years for safety reasons.”

The school district demolished and removed the last of the old playground in January, and kids have been anxiously waiting for the replacement, McConkey said.

While the hope was to have a new playground in place more than a year ago, it took longer than expected to raise all the money. And, McConkey explained, the longer it took to fundraiser, the higher the costs for the project climbed.

When all was said and done, this playground cost $52,000, and that’s only the first phase, McConkey added.

Parents have been actively fundraising for the past three years, and will be keeping it up.

“We had to get creative, as our

standard fundraisers already fund other school items such as field trips, speakers, and technology,” McConkey explained.

“We had to come up with new ideas.”

The two most successful have been the school’s Christmas tree chipping held every January by Urban Lumberjack Tree Services, as well as a school carnival – which is being morphed this year into a February Winter Wonderland. McConkey hopes it will become an annual festival, and a destination event for the community.

Admittedly, the project has taken much longer than anticipated, but the “kids seem very excited” with the results, thus far.

Now, work begins almost immediately, preparing for phase two of the playground.

This includes a massive netting system that the children can climb on, as well as extension of the play area to include the existing swings inside a wooden border that is completely inlayed with the same engineered wood fibre used for phase one.

The second phase is expected to cost another $46,000, and McConkey said fundraising begins Jan. 2 and 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the annual tree chipping at the school. Chipping is by donation. Last year, they raised almost $2,000 and hope to top that total this year.

Artists and artist teams are invited to enter into a juried competition to create new, permanent public artwork in Hammond.

The goal is to enhance the experience at Hammond Stadium Park through the placement of a new piece of public art.

Artists are encouraged to familiarize themselves with Hammond Stadium Park by taking part in a non-mandatory site tour led by City staff on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016 at 1 p.m. During the tour, artists will have an opportunity to learn more and ask questions.

Erin, a Maple Ridge Elementary student, and Kole, a pupil at Albion Elementary, won the privilege of being Fire Chiefs for a Day after participating in the firehall open house during fire pre-

vention week back in November.

And last week, they realized that wish.

They were picked up from school in a fire truck Wednesday, Dec. 9 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in the morning â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and shuttled over to Firehall No. 1 to meet the real chief and ride in the bucket of the aerial fire truck.

They were then treated to lunch courtesy of A&W Restaurant, before travelling to the Justice Instituteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fire safety training centre on 256th Street.

There, they adorned firefighter turnout gear and were given a taste of hands-on training before being chauffeured back to school in a fire truck for a chance to share news of their exciting adventures with their friends.

Joan Martin, 100, still remembers one of her first and favourite pieces she knit for her daughter â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a shawl made out of white lace. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was quite fancy,â&#x20AC;? said the Greystone Manor resident who has been knitting for 70 years, originally for

her children. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t knit much for my husband, he was too big [and] it took too long,â&#x20AC;? Martin said, laughing.

Now more than ever, Martin uses knitting as a way of therapy, she said, and is one of the five members of the Greystone Knitting Circle.

The group, whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s youngest member is 90-years-old, meets every Friday and sits quietly together, knitting and purling, Martin said, creating baby beanies for newborns at the Ridge Meadows Hospital,

and Afghan blankets for fundraisers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something I can do reasonably well,â&#x20AC;?

Martin explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have my breakfast then sit and knit for an hour because thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the time Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m at my best.â&#x20AC;?

he price of single detached homes in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows continue to inch up.

That’s good news for homeowners looking to sell; not-so-good news for buyers looking for space between themselves and their neighbours.

Last month, the benchmark price for a single detached home in Maple Ridge was listed at $538,800 in Maple Ridge and $592,000 in Pitt Meadows (Benchmarks represent a typical property within each market).

This represents a 12.2 per cent increase over the same time last year in Maple Ridge, and a 13.2

per cent bump in price in Pitt Meadows when compared to last November.

Despite the price increase, Maple Ridge remains the second most affordable market to buy a single detached homes among regions under the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV) umbrella, behind the Sunshine Coast ($383,900).

Local realtor Dianne Fernandes Enns with Royal LePage Brookside Realty said especially in Maple Ridge, it’s a 100 per cent sellers’ market where supply can’t keep up with demand.

“I can’t guarantee anything but I don’t see a slowdown anytime soon,” Fernandes Enns said, regarding soaring house

Fernandes Enns described the market as “crazy” with little to no inventory.

“People are selling their

houses within a week, with multiple offers and no subjects,” she said. “I have two buyers and I can’t find a house for them to get into before they’re sold.”

Meanwhile the upward

price trend continues when it comes to townhouses in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

The average price of a townhouse in Maple Ridge was $308,800 last month, up 13.2 per cent in value from November 2014.

In Pitt Meadows, a typical townhouse will set a buyer back to the tune of $368,900, slightly (8.4 per cent) more expensive than a year previous.

Apartment prices in Maple Ridge have dropped, however. Purchasing a condo in Maple Ridge will cost, on average, $166,200, a 1.4 per cent drop from last November and a 12 per cent decrease from November 2012.

In Pitt Meadows, the benchmark price for an apartment is $245,000 last

month, also down 1.4 per cent from the previous November.

Meanwhile, increases pretty much across the board aren’t cooling down the red-hot housing market in Metro Vancouver.

The REBGV reports that residential property sales in Metro Vancouver reached 3,524 on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) in November.

This represents a 40.1 per cent increase compared to the 2,516 sales recorded in November 2014.

Five teams took part in the last provincial women’s qualifying curling event of the year, this past weekend at the Golden Ears Winter Club (GEWC.) “It went well,” said Earl King, who is on the GEWC’s board of

directors.

“Teams always enjoy playing here,” he added. “We have very good ice here and they like that.”

During the event, three Victoria Curling Centre teams advanced to the provincial championships, set to take place Jan. 19 to 24 in Coquitlam.

An annual event that began as – and still is – a “grassroots youth idea” marked its seventh year on Sunday, as the Shred, Share, Stoked skateboard competition returned to the Greg Moore Youth Centre (GMYC.) For an entry fee of either $5, five cans of food, or five items of clothing, local skaters, as well as participants from other areas such as Surrey and Langley lit up the GMYC with a variety of skate stunts in support of the Friends In Need Food Bank, and the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society.

The faces may have changed somewhat over the years, but it’s something that the Maple Ridge youth council wants to keep going, said Richard Bosma, youth services programmer. “It’s just a great, fun event, and a great way to give back to the community.”

Those who participate in the event are also heavily involved in putting it on.

“At the original event, Jesse Holland was a youth and a massive skateboarder, now he’s a youth staff,” explained Bosma. “He’s worked with a handful of

skaters and some of the youth in our leadership group and working with them to plan it, but the planning is really driven by the crew.”

The event is growing every year, and on Sunday, about 50 skaters took part in the competition, and about 10 volunteers helped to ensure things ran smoothly.

As for the amount of good and money that was raised, Bosma said a firm total

wasn’t yet available, but estimated “it was coming in around $250.”

Eight garbage bags full of clothes were collected as well, and “three big boxes” of food.

Beyond the giving-back aspect of the event, Bosma said it’s important for the local skate community to hold this every year, because

those who participate have “an incredible passion for the sport that all comes together in competitions.”

Everybody who took part “was pumped to be able to be a part of it,” he added, especially because skate competitions “don’t happen all that often.”

And at the end of the day, it’s about “skating hard and sharing that passion.”

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear â&#x20AC;&#x153;Jimmyâ&#x20AC;? as he was affectionately known.

James lived life full speed ahead with a contagious beautiful smile, kind heart and an uncontrollable willingness to help others.

He will leave behind his greatest loves wife Kayla and beautiful daughter Peyton, father Rick, mother Debbie, brother Brad (Alyssa), nieces Cassandra and Delylah, Grandma Beverly, Oma, as well as Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, In laws, and many close friends.

James was taken from us by an illness that affects many but is understood by very few. His last thoughts were that we try to understand his journey and to help others who are on the same path.

May he find peace in heaven with his brother Josh, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Flew like a bird out to the sea, to announce to the world, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m finally freeâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The hardest part wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be losing you, it will be learning to live without youâ&#x20AC;?
