MP Johns delivers first House speech Courtenay-Alberni’s NDP MP, Gord Johns, gave his first full speech in the House of Commons Friday morning and brought Ottawa’s focus squarely to the challenges facing his constituents.

“Small business is the core of our economy and the natural leader of innovation. We have opportunities to invest in innovation,” Johns said.

“Often the wealth of our country starts in rural communities,

GORD JOHNS but it leaves rural communities. We need to have shared prosperity with aboriginal people, and with all of our communities.”

Johns mentioned his

great-grandfather had worked at a paper mill in Ocean Falls which was then a town of 4,000 people but today its population has sunk to only 75.

“I do not want to see that happen to Port Alberni. I do not want to see that happen to any more coastal communities.”

The new MP also called for real action to address factors facing seniors, saying a strategy is needed— particulary in a riding like his, with a high median age.

BC Hydro crews work to clear lines on Kitsuksis Road on Thursday midway through a series of harsh Pacific storms that hit the west coast. Close to 9,000 people were without power at one point in the Alberni Valley due to storm damage. Volunteers ensure seniors have Merry Christmas SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Local residents are making sure senior citizens in the community are not left out of holiday giving this season.

In the spirit of Christmas, a hamper project is underway and has become a labour of love for two new friends. After Shari Fast saw how much help Michelle Gard provided to homeless resident Steve Rickard, she started thinking about those who do not get as much attention.

“I started thinking about the people we don’t see because they are shut-ins or

lonely and they are mostly seniors,” Fast said.

She used her father as an example. Living in Nanaimo on his own, he has only one leg and has limited mobility to the outside world.

“He only has family and is lonely,” Fast said. “I started with a hamper for him and it has snowballed.”

Fast contacted Gard online with the suggestion of putting hampers together for senior citizens who will be alone this Christmas.

“I offered to join in right away. I saw her post and thought, ‘Why not?’” she said.

“There’s no reason not to.”

Immediately an elderly neighbour came to mind.

“Those are the people

we want to help.”

The two started purchasing gift and essential items, as well as special food items that the elderly might not enjoy during the rest of the year. Soon offers of cash and donations came in and they are hoping to fill the hampers with fresh baking and knitted items, like slippers or socks.

Local grocers, Quality Foods, SaveOn-Foods and No Frills are all contributing food items.

With the help of all the proceeds from Santa photos at the Blue Marlin on Sunday, Dec. 20 from

10 a.m. to 1 p.m., they expect enough funds to meet or exceed their goal.

“We went from the idea of making five to 10, but now we are shooting for 10 to 20,” Gard said.

Gard’s six-year-old son also offered to pitch in to help put the hampers together.

“As a single mom, I want him to realize it is important to give back,” she said.

As a recent emptynester, Fast said the project has restored her energy just as she was beginning to feel sorry for herself.

“It has given me a charge and lit a fire under me,” Fast said.

Another opportunity to help seniors this holiday is through a local Adopt a Grandparent initiative.

Ellie Hadley has organized the project that will fund gifts to be distributed at Heritage Place on Dec. 21.

“Adopt a Grandparent is something I decided to do to give back to our community at Christmas,” Hadley said.

“I’ve experienced spending Christmas alone and it wasn’t fun as a young person.

I can’t imagine how hard it must be to experience it later in life and having nobody to visit.”

Sponsors pay $20, which gives his or her adopted grandparent a pair of warm socks and a full-sized botanically-based hand cream.

Twenty sponsors are still needed but the deadline is quickly approaching.

Tendrils of gender based violence far-reaching Gender based violence affects everyone. It destroys families, weakens the fabric of society and takes a heavy toll on communities and the economy. People who live in abusive relationships are more likely to experience low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts or PTSD. A reminder to Canadians to take action began Nov. 25 with what is known as the 16 days of Activism. The 16 days of Activism Against Gender – Based Violence is an international organization evolving from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991. These dates were chosen to symbolically link violence against women and human rights, emphasizing such violence is a

Participation is worldwide including over 180 countries, 5,478 organizations, policymakers, government, UN agencies and countless numbers of individuals.

Port Alberni is a participant thanks to the Alberni Community and Women’s Services Society (ACAWS). Did you notice the purple ribbons along Stamp Avenue?

Each of the 118 ribbons reflect a domestic violence call received by the RCMP between Nov. 1 of last year and Nov. 1 of this year. These statistics are lower than the known incidents as

many women do not report to the police that they are experiencing domestic violence.

The reality of abuse is complex.

Society grapples with the notion that the woman is to blame for their abuse when they choose to stay. Sadly enough, those abused believe this too. The one thing blame will not do, is change any of this.

So why don’t women just leave?

Many people who do not live with an abusive partner say that if their partner were ever to harm them they would leave. Many women who experience violence remember having had the same

resolve.

Ending an intimate relationship is never easy and even more so when one’s selfconfidence has been undermined.

Women fear that no one will believe their partner’s abuse and/ or that they beat them; the behaviour happens “behind closed doors”.

Women often discover that many people and agencies trivialize the impact of abuse and no one seems to understand they feel like a prisoner who might be severely injured or die at the hands of the “jailer”.

Women conclude that since people don’t understand the seriousness of the abuse, they do not support disruption of the family.

Often women are isolated by their partner and lose their support systems. The partner is usually

Many of the abusive partners become remorseful after being violent.

Since most women believe in committed relationships, building their lives around the relationship, they

stop the behaviour.

When the violence occurs again, she may leave to gather more information about available resources.

The next leaving may be about breaking the isolation or gaining financial independence.

The most likely predictor of a woman permanently “staying gone” is whether she has the economic resources to survive on her own. Most women do leave.

Even when women decide to leave, their partners will put up many barricades.

The partners threaten everything from stalking, to seeking custody of the children, to withholding support, interfering with employment, to turn children, friends and family against them, retaliatory suicide or other ways to escalate the violence.

Escalation is also used to coerce the woman into reconciliation or to retaliate for trying to leave.

A real fact is; women are killed by their partners.

Leaving an abusive relationship is a process. Most women leave and return several times. The first time may be a test to see if her partner will actually get some help to

SEASON OF GIVING NEEDS TO BE LONGER

T

here is no shortage of opportunities for residents to show their charitable side this holiday season.

Whether it’s a shelter, looking to provide meals and clothing for the homeless, a food bank trying to fill the cupboards of low-income families and individuals, or an animal shelter issuing a desperate plea for help, the need is evident.

This is the time of year when people tend to dig a little bit deeper to support many worthy causes.

It’s the season of giving, and that’s a good thing, because it’s also the season during which want is most keenly felt.

That’s why agencies redouble their work each autumn and volunteers for the Salvation Army once more take their places, manning Christmas kettles outside stores.

t’s been a long time since I’ve written about the Campbell Zoo. Some of you who have read my column for a few years know that I have chronicled my adventures with my sister’s family, whom I affectionately referred to as the Zoo—which at various times included five children (including two stepdaughters), two dogs, three cats and a fish named TwoTails.

Much has happened with the Zoo since my sister, the head zookeeper, relocated to Nova Scotia. She and her mate have parted ways, so the Zoo will now affectionately be referred to as the Family Zoo. My eldest niece has since let us know that we got the birth announcement wrong and henceforth will be referred to

as the eldest nephew (we couldn’t be more proud), my second nephew is engaged and living with his fiancée and their own menagerie of dogs, cats, rats, snakes, chinchillas (or maybe it’s a ferret), etc., and my youngest niece at 13 now towers over me.

Also, one of the dogs, several cats and the fish named Two-Tails have since passed away.

The head zookeeper has earned her nursing degree and is working in a hospital in Parrsboro, or as the teenager says, “P-Dot Central.”

The elderly border collie was sadly put to rest earlier this year, but a new barking fluffball, Lola, has stolen everyone’s heart. Two cats rule the Zoo, and Olivia the rabbit watches everything from her perch, safely behind an indoor fence so Lola cannot “cuddle” with her.

The eldest nephew celebrated his 23rd birthday in the Maritimes while my sister and the teenager were visiting in Vancouver (and laughing at all the snow falling at home even while they were ensconced in a series of wet Pacific storms).

His transgender journey has been an arduous and emotionally painful one for him, and I am proud of how he is weathering it.

Pride week is a really big deal in our family now.

Are cash gifts tacky or ideal?

When faced with a gift list a mile long and no idea what to get certain individuals on that list, many holiday shoppers opt to give cash as a present. Cash gifts are easy, one-size-fits all and no one will request a receipt to return a cash gift. Still, some people are not quite sure if it is socially acceptable to give a gift of cash.

There are many pros and cons to giving cash as a gift. Once a person weighs the advantages and the disadvantages to giving cold hard cash as a gift, then he or she can decide if cash is an ideal present or one that’s best avoided.

Advantages

Gift cards are a staple of the holiday season.

Often a go-to gift when other options just do not seem to suffice, gift cards remove the worry about whether or not the item will fit or if it’s the right color or model. Gift cards can make ideal gifts because they are chosen with the recipients’ likes and tastes in mind while allowing recipients to shop without spending their own money.

Although gift cards have many positive attributes, it’s difficult to overlook that gift cards are viewed as a safe gift lacking in originality.

But the National Retail Federation notes that in 2011, 57.7 percent of survey respondents said they would prefer to get a gift card that year.

This ranks gift cards higher than electronics, clothing and accessories as desired gifts. Recipients of holiday cheer seemingly would like to pick out their own presents, which can ease the burden on gift-givers searching high and low for the perfect gifts.

One of the advantages to giving cash is it eliminates waste. Unlike gifts that will never be used and simply take up space, cash will be used sooner or later. How often have you received a sweater you won’t wear or a trinket you won’t use? Sometimes people return these gifts, but very often they get relegated to a pile of belongings that will end up in the garbage or stashed in the back of a closet. Cash eliminates this waste by giving a person the opportunity to buy exactly what he or she wants.

Cash gifts may be ideal for older people to give

because they have limited mobility and cannot get out to the store to shop for presents. And grandparents unaware of the latest trends can give cash in a card and instruct grandchildren to purchase something they like.

Some people overextend themselves during the holiday season, and a cash gift can soften the blow of holiday spending.

Cash is very portable, which can make it easier for those who travel for the holidays to avoid shipping costs or extra baggage fees to take gifts on airlines.

People are inundat-

ed with a lot of stuff already, and a cash gift might be just what the doctor ordered.

Disadvantages

Cash gifts may be considered impersonal and lacking in creativity.

It does not take much effort to stash a dollar amount inside of an envelope and present it, so gift recipients may question their relationships with gift givers who give cash.

For many people, the excitement of the holidays has a lot to do with seeing a giant pile of gifts waiting to be unwrapped. Gifting cash removes that excitement of

presents under the tree. Although items can be purchased later on, the immediate gratification of tearing through boxes and bags simply is not there.

Some people find it awkward to receive cash because the value of the gift is right there in black and white. It puts both people on the spot and may create some uncomfortable moments if the value of a cash gift does not match up to what the cash recipient spent on the cash giver.

When gifting standard gifts, many people are unaware of what the other spent and if the item was purchased on

a discount. If you gift with cash, there is no hiding the value.

Another disadvantage is if a person gives cash and receives cash in return. Do the two gifts cancel each other out?

What if the amounts are different? Dealing in cash alone can be awkward.

There are ways to make giving cash a little more acceptable. If you get creative when handing over the money, this may take away from the fact that cash does not make a very dramatic gift. * Try pairing the cash with a wallet or purse to make the presentation a

little more interesting. * Send the recipient on a scavenger hunt for the money, writing clues and hiding them around the house.

* Create a money tree or wreath that displays the cash in an interesting way. * Fold bills into bows or tape together to make wrapping paper for a small token gift. * For children, roll up bills and put it into a crayon box or pencil case. * Fill up a large box with a lot of filler and hide the cash inside of a smaller box tucked inside.

Gift basket A gift card can be ensconced with other trinkets and tied into a theme. For example, a gift card for a spa massage may be complemented by lotions, massage oil and a terry-cloth robe.

Poinsettia pointers Unlike holly and some of the other greenery that is commonly associated with the holidays, poinsettias do not naturally thrive in the colder temperatures.

These plants originate in southern Mexico and were considered an exotic plant when first introduced to the United States by Joel Robert Poinsett, the first American ambassador to Mexico.

Poinsettias can be fickle plants and ones that gardening novices may find challenging to maintain. The plants are comprised of green foliage, colorful (often red) flower bracts, and

the actual flowers of the plants, which are the red or green buttonlike parts nestled in the center of the bracts.

Because they are a tropical plant, poinsettias can be damaged by exposure to low temperatures, even if they are only exposed for short periods of time. They should be wrapped and protected against the elements when brought home. For maximum plant life, poinsettias need to be placed near a warm, sunny window, or another area that has ample amounts of light.

They thrive in temperatures between 60 and 75 F and should be kept away from warm or cold drafts.

Water the plant whenever the surface feels dry to the touch. Water until it drains out the bottom, but don’t let the plant sit in water.

Over- or under-watering can cause leaves to drop prematurely and wilt. If your home lacks in humidity, you may need to water the plant more frequently. Poinsettias do not need to be fertilized while the plant is in bloom.

The Ohio State University Extension says poinsettias can be reflowered the following Christmas, but unless a yearlong schedule of care is observed, the results usually are not good. You can speak with a gardening expert or consult online resources for the proper care schedule. Caring for a poinsettia yearround involves gradually drying out the plant and storing it in a cool location. The plant later will be moved outdoors and then back inside and pruned to keep a full shape.

(Mary) nee Farkas February 7, 1937 to December 3, 2015

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Kocsis on December 3, 2015 with her family by her side at The Village at Smith Creek in West Kelowna.

She is survived by Jim, her loving husband of 58 years; two sons: Jim (Dana) of Penticton, George (Elizabeth) of Armstrong and two grandchildren: Christopher and Carissa. She is also survived by her sister, Julie (Janos) in Hungary and brother, Joseph (Isabella) of Parksville in addition to numerous relatives in Hungary.

Maria was born in Kimle, Hungary in 1937 and immigrated to Canada along with her soon to be husband Jim in 1956. They were married in Abbotsford in 1957 and following several brief stays in Vancouver and Nanaimo they settled to raise their family in Port Alberni. Maria was a dedicated mother who juggled part time work with raising her family. She found employment in various establishments as an exceptional cook. Perhaps her favorite position was in the kitchen at Woodward’s where she worked her culinary magic for over 19 years. Maria was a kind and compassionate person who made a lasting impression on everyone that knew her. She loved gardening, golfing, volunteering, playing crib and spending time with her family.

A Memorial Mass in celebration of Maria’s life will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2547 Hebert Road, West Kelowna.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Maria’s memory can be made to the Village at Smith Creek, 2425 Orlin Rd., West Kelowna, V4T 3C7 or the Alzheimer Society of B.C. #300 - 828 West 8th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 1E2.

WILLIAM DARREN GOODYEAR Bill, or Billy, as you prefer, was predeceased by his father William Maxwell Goodyear in 1987. He is survived by his mother, his buddy, his pal, his friend, Betty Goodyear Levins; stepfather Milt Levins, brother Travis Goodyear and Colby McMeekin, sister Dana Few and Todd Janey; stepsisters Serena and Kevin Clarke, Trish Levins and Derek Ferguson, nieces and nephews Tyler and Tyrone Nicole, Nicholas, Logan, Hannah, Emily and Ava and great nephew Emre and to all of his aunts, uncles and cousins thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

Billy passed away peacefully at Ty Watson House with his family at his side on December 6, 2015.

If you have ever had the pleasure to meet this special man, you know he had a contagious personality. Billy was always a Newfoundlander and loved the jokes. He was an amazing brother to Travis and Dana, as he was to his stepsisters Serena and Trisha; and always so adoring and caring to all of his nephews and nieces. He was a huge fan of the Canucks, Blue Jays and loved his Pink Floyd music.

We would like to thank the nursing staffs for all their caring and also to Dr. Alan Fraser for his being there every day; and of course Ty Watson House‌.incredible what you do every day.

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs had a busy, storm-filled weekend that saw them open their newly expanded office, come from behind to beat the West Kelowna Warriors and postpone their game against Trail Smoke Eaters until Monday night because BC Ferries cancellations meant the Smoke Eaters were stuck on the other side of Georgia Strait.

In between, they also made a couple of player transactions.

Team and city officials gathered on Friday afternoon to cut the official ribbon signifying the end of construction on the office. The expansion offers a ticket counter and retail space that opens up to the Multiplex on one side, and was built with local labour and wood products.

Friday was Owen Johnson’s first game in a Bulldogs’ uniform after the ‘Dogs and Surrey Eagles swapped defencemen—Alberni sending 1995-born blueliner Tyler Cooper to the Eagles for 20-year-old Johnson.

“Owen is a 20-yearold who’s got more experience in the BCHL,” Bulldogs’

coach Kevin Willison said Friday afternoon.

“We’re looking to him for leadership.

We need a little bit of improvement on the back and these kinds of trades don’t come every day. We had to give up youth to get a veteran.”

Anderson brings Christmas to Char’s Island. Anderson’s song Sunday Shoes was the lead radio single for Canadian artist, Alessia Cohle, Anderson received FACTOR funding to record music in the spring, and was again selected as an Emerging Artist at the CMA Fan Fair in Nashville this past June.

Anderson had a busy summer showcasing at the SML Songwriting Festival in Virginia, recording and releasing her third studio album in Nashville, and writing songs for her upcoming Christmas Album, set to release in Winter 2016.

My mother travelled from coast to coast to attend Halifax’s pride parade with my nephew and the teenager in July; and all of us have learned so much about transgenderism from a very personal view.

My Wednesday last week was steeped in the teen vernacular as I accompanied the youngest to a Twenty one Pilots concert in Vancouver. She had been counting the days from about 200 down to the concert, after phoning me one day nearly a year ago asking if I would take her to the concert as her mom didn’t really want to go.

The band—which is really two guys from Columbus, Ohio, neither one of them pilots—put on a great show and it turns out I like their music. The best part about the concert, though, was watching the teenager enjoy her first-ever concert. So different from the concerts I used to attend when I was a little older than her: we used to raise Bic lighters and wave them in the air. Now, kids raise their smart phones and wave them in the air while recording every little

part of the concert.

For a short person, it makes watching the concert challenging, especially from the middle of the standing pit of humanity in

front of the stage.
