Affordable Recreation The City of Campbell River and Strathcona Regional District work together with a number of agencies to provide affordable recreation opportunities.

Leisure Involvement for Everyone (LIFE) The Leisure Involvement for Everyone (LIFE) program provides discounted rates for recreation programs and free admission for individuals and families with low incomes. LIFE members apply once and receive two cards.

The City of Campbell River Recreation and Culture card can be used at the Community Centre, Sportsplex and the Centennial Pool. Card holders receive 52 free drop-in admissions and receive a 50% discount on up to three programs.

The Strathcona Regional District card can be used at the Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex. Cardholders receive 104 free drop-in admissions and a 50% discount on up to three programs.

Quality Foods – Rec Bucks This program enables Quality Foods shoppers to redeem their Quality Foods points for Rec Bucks. Simply cash in 200,000 Quality Foods points for a $20 Rec Bucks voucher, which is redeemable for programs, admission and rentals at all local rec centers.

JumpStart Children ages 4-18 years JumpStart is a community-based charitable program that helps kids in financial need participate in organized sport and recreation. To request funding, complete an application form, which is available at the Sportsplex or Community Centre. If you require more information regarding the program, call the Community Centre at 250-286-1161.

Kidsport™ So all kids can play!

Children ages 6-18 years

Kidsport™ is a community-based sport charity that provides grants for children to participate in a recognized sport. Grants are limited to $200 per year, per child and certain restrictions apply.

Successful applicants, who have not volunteered as an LIT in the past, will be required to pay a $35 registration fee and attend an orientation on Thursday, Jan 28.

They’ll learn to play baseball and softball in a safe and fun environment. Twenty-one of our classes are drop-in, and three classes, Beginner Mat Pilates, Advanced Mat Pilates, and Fit Mom Prenatal Fitness, require registration.

Our classes are adult oriented, but youth, ages 12-15, may participate in a fitness class when they provide a signed Parental Consent form. These forms, which may be signed by parents or guardians, are available at the Sportsplex.

We offer Group Fitness Pass discounts for groups of 12 or more.

Consider getting together with family members, colleagues, friends, or acquaintances to purchase a six, nine or twelve-month pass. Assign a group leader. We provide the group leader with a package of information on how to manage the group pass application process. Squash and Racquetball Equipment Rental

Youth Squash Lessons 12-16 years

Racquetball and squash are both racquet sports played indoors in closed courts.

Both sports require agility, speed, coordination, and quick movements; and can be played by singles or doubles. How they differ is their rules, court size, and equipment. Squash balls are smaller than racquetballs, and squash racquets are longer than racquetball racquets.

What is Wallyball?

This sport adds a whole new dimension to the game of Volleyball. Wallyball is volleyball played in a racquetball court. How it differs from volleyball is the court is smaller, and walls are used to bounce and strategically place the ball.

We’ll start the evening with an inspiring video and presentations from representatives of three successful community gardens: Laughing Willow (located at the corner of Simms Road and Lawson Grove), Anglican Church (located at 228 South Dogwood Street) and Campbellton Neighbourhood Community Garden (located at 172 –15th Avenue). Qigong is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques and focused intention.

We have more than 100 volunteers helping us run our 50+ programs, and we are thankful for each and everyone one.

Many of our volunteers raise money for 50+ equipment and supplies by helping with the Plant and Jumble Sale, GIANT Garage Sale, Christmas Marketplace, and the Toy and Craft Sale. Members also contribute by donating gently-used household items and clothing; or by joining a group that knits, sews, crafts, or quilts in preparation for the sale.

94 year-old Dorothy Goodwin used the TrailRider to visit Elk Falls Suspension Bridge.

We have a TrailRider available for you to loan. This mobility device, which is like a modified wheelchair, is specially designed to enable wilderness access for people with physical disabilities and challenges. Lightweight and maneuverable, the TrailRider is pushed by one person in the back, and pulled by another in the front while it carries its occupant across trails, rocks and shallow streams. cost: $10 per week note: A $100 damage deposit is required.

Bookings must be made 24 hours before pick up at the Campbell River Community Centre.

Want to try something different for your child’s birthday this year?

After everyone has gone home and Strathcona Gardens has closed its doors to the public, we invite children to join us for some overnight fun. Drop the kids off for some late night skating, swimming, lazer tag, sports, relay races and games - 13.5 hours of total fun! The weary party goers will wind down to a movie with popcorn and then sleep in one of our activity rooms waking up to a light breakfast all ready for you to pick them up. We will look after your party goers from 8:30 pm until 10:00 am the next morning and can take up to 24 kids.

This time is for adults only. The leisure ice and a portion of arena #2 will be set up for an adult skate while another portion of the arena will be set up for a fun game of pond hockey. If you are playing hockey you must wear your helmet.

All ages welcome. Pond Hockey is only available during designated times. If your skating time says “leisure ice” discount rates are in effect because only the leisure ice area is open.

**Coolest Game on Earth – Intro to Hockey: If you have never played

ice hockey this is the program for you. Learn basic hockey skills and have fun. All participants must be able to skate on their own. **Hockey 101: Is your Minor Hockey player craving “extra ice time”? This popular fast paced after school program includes all aspects of hockey. Passing, shooting, skating, stick handling and organized drills similar to those in practice will help to elevate their game to the next level. This program sells out quickly so don’t miss out.

Participants must have previous hockey experience for this program.

**Women’s Intro to Hockey: The purpose of this program is to introduce

women to the basic skills, to make new friends and to try the game without having to make a commitment to the entire season. Program will take place on the Leisure Ice. **Adult Learn to Play: Come and experience the game of hockey like never before! Our qualified instructors will instruct the basic skills in a fun, creative, noncompetitive and non-contact environment. Each session will include supervised instruction and plenty of game play. This program is co-ed and designed for those who do not regularly play hockey, but would like to learn. Program will take place on the Leisure Ice. Private Lessons (all ages welcome): Want to learn how to skate or work on your hockey skills? Private lessons only cost $18.25 per ½ hour and semi-private lessons cost $13.75 per ½ hour per person. Focusing on Stroke Development These training sessions still incorporate some of the components of the Red Cross Learn to Swim Program but there will be more focus put on stroke development, fitness and endurance. Two classes a month will work on the participant’s water safety skills but the remainder of the time will be spent on strokes and entries. Parents will receive a mid-season evaluation and report cards on the last day. Please register for one of the 3 groups below. Lifeguard School

It’s happening here at Strathcona Gardens this Christmas and Spring Break. Lifeguard School is the most efficient and economical way to obtain the majority of the certificates required to become a lifeguard: Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid with CPR C and AED Provider. “Crash” courses can be a great way to learn – become 100% immersed in lifesaving, lifeguarding and first aid. Rehabilitation programs & services (CDM) Chronic Disease Management (19+)

Take Heart Cardiac Rehabilitation Program (19+)

The purpose of this program is to help individuals maintain independence and functional conditioning through prevention and management of chronic conditions. Program includes physical activity (aquatic and land based) and educational sessions. Participants with congestive heart failure, asthma, diabetes, high BP, chronic lung disease, depression, renal failure, liver disease and dementia would benefit. The program is divided into 2 (7 week) sections. The first 7 weeks is designed to get you on track and the last 7 weeks is to give you opportunities for advancement. Call Debra Wilson at 250-287-9234 ext. 236 to find the best fit for you. There will be an individual assessment, then monitoring throughout the program to assist with your progression. See Registered Fitness Class Schedule for class days and times.

This 12-week program will benefit people who have had a cardiac event or who have the following risk factors: on medication to lower blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, overweight, diabetes, smoking history, inactivity, stress, depression and lung or kidney disease. Participants will begin with an individual assessment and then receive an exercise prescription that is supervised twice a week by a Kinesiologist. Aquatic Therapy Programs Aquatic therapy is a form of physical exercise which can significantly improve structural and muscular strength.
