Understanding the plight of refugees Rick Gay Summerland Alliance Church After the wise men were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up! Flee to Egypt with the

child and his mother,” the angel said.

With current events and regular conversations around displaced peoples, refugees, and the homeless, it is almost too easy to draw parallels

from the birth and life of Jesus to the plight of millions around the world and at home.

Who better to relate to displaced people, refugees, and the homeless than a displaced, home-

less, refugee Himself?

Born in a manger, no room in an inn, forced to flee from the oppressive rule of a tyrant, and traveling from place to place with no fixed address, Jesus could relate to the

stories of many whom we read and hear about on a regular basis.

Interesting that He understands our weaknesses for He faced all of the same testings we do. We can come to Him boldly for there we will receive His mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

As we wrestle with solutions to the plight of millions, may we not forget the needs of those right around us. And as we think about opening our homes and wallets to help alleviate the conditions of others, may we open our hearts to the Saviour who was born in Bethlehem.

After all, it was Jesus

who said: when you saw a hungry stranger and fed them; when you gave the thirsty stranger something to drink; when you showed the stranger hospitality; when you clothed the naked stranger; and when you saw the sick stranger or the stranger in prison and visited them you were doing it to me.

Thankfully, the concept of giving can extend beyond the season of Christmas. May it warm our hearts and touch us that the One whose birth we celebrate came to give His life so that we might give also.

The arrival of the Christmas Wish Book in my childhood home was a glorious day.

Probably because we didn’t have a TV that worked, partly because we were strong believers in Santa Claus and mostly because the book contained more toys and gifts than any child could dream of.

My siblings and I fought over who got to look at it first and we jealously timed how long each other had it, especially when it was our turn next.

covering one of the gifts in this book with our name on it, beneath our tree on Christmas morning, was absolutely magical.

Who knew what adventures awaited while wearing a coon skin cap, experimenting with a chemistry kit or playing with a wood burning set?

The possibilities filled my dreams and left me eagerly anticipating every gift beneath the tree. I loved Christmas and all the adventures that followed!

Fast forward five decades and I still love Christmas. I still love and anticipate the adventures each yuletide season brings.

There is one significant difference these days however.

In 2015 the things I want for Christmas can’t be put in a box.

It is impossible to box and wrap up my granddaughters’ squeals of delight or put my grandson’s questions of curiosity into a gift bag.

It is not reasonable to

expect a gift card that allows me to hear my grandchildren pray at night or enables me to spend meaningful oneon-one time with each of my children.

Likewise it is impossible to wrap up the quiet certainty of my wife sleeping beside me each night or to somehow capture the joyful sound of her laugh which stirs my soul.

I would if I could because these gifts mean more to me than anything that any Wish Book ever contained.

The gifts of time, love and relationship are

what touch my soul most and just like the Christmas gifts I received as a child they imply an adventure.

A journey into a world of possibilities and unknowns with only this certainty: I know I am loved and I know who is with me.

That is, of course, the whole point of Christmas. Christians believe that the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem as the Messiah is a gift of time, love and relationship.

The Bible tells us that God so loved the world that he gave his son to us and it also tells us that

Jesus stepped into time to be with us.

In other words, because Jesus came, we can know that we are loved by God and we can know that we are not alone in this thing called life.

You won’t find this gift in any Christmas Wish Book, but you can find it in the Christmas Story.

Do you need a refresher course?

Pick any Christian church of your choice and attend this Christmas season. Who knows what adventures will follow when you receive for yourself the gift of Christmas?

Our ‘Three Brains’ and the Christmas story Don Huston Julia Street Community Church

Recently, I came across some new research indicating that we may have three brains rather than just the one inside our skulls.

Gabriella Kortsch writes, “Neuroscientists have finally done it! They have demonstrated that we have a brain in our heart and another in our intestines.

What we have in each of these, in actual fact, is an extensive mass of neurons that behave in a fashion similar to the neurons contained in the brain, and that appear to function at mega-speeds, often much greater than those of our cerebral neurons.”

She goes on to state that, “the evidence clearly shows that in order to

make decisions based on all of their knowledge, they should apply not only that which their logical brain tells them, but also what their feeling brain (heart) and instinctive brain (gut) have given them to understand.”

How you may ask does this apply to the Christmas Story of Jesus’ birth?

The story in brief goes like this… God sends His son Jesus to earth in the form of a baby born to Mary – a virgin – and her fiancé Joseph. Jesus is born in a manger surrounded by witnesses such as shepherds and inn keepers.

Two or so years later a group of wise men come to Bethlehem to meet this child based on how the stars have lined up indicating that an unusual King has been born.

This child grows to be a man and reveals himself to his followers as being the very Son of God in human form who has come to mend the broken relationship between God and man.

The religious and political leaders decide to crucify Jesus based on whom he claims to be.

As a result, Jesus is hung on the cross, dies, and is buried in a tomb.

The story continues with Jesus rising from the dead three days later.

Jesus proceeds to reveal himself to his followers prior to ascending into heaven with the promise of returning at some time in the future.

All of this in order to bring man back into right relationship with God. I know what you’re thinking, “This is too much for your logical

brain to accept as truth.”

I have heard most of the arguments to the contrary and yet when I take the time to think with my mind, feel with my heart and go with my gut the evidence is clear… it’s all true.

I look at the world around me and cannot deny that God did indeed create this world (us) and put a plan in place to keep us in close relationship with him; we messed up his plan; his son Jesus came to make the plan right again; and as a result we are left with a choice as to how to respond to his plan.

Accept it as truth and turn our lives over to his plan for our lives, or deny it as truth and turn away from his plan for our lives.

I have made my choice, how will you choose?

We try to understand the depth of

what is before us. Even in 2015 the reverberations are felt around the world. Is this really God? Was God born of woman like the rest of us? Did God walk this earth?

Did God die and rise from the

dead?

It is all before us at Christmas.

Let us again enter the mystery and pray for the Life and Peace this message promises.

Let us pray for loved ones present and loved ones past.

a lot, but they were surprised by how many homes had Christmas trees up and decorated already.

I remember when I was growing up that in the church we did not sing Christmas carols until at least the Sunday before Christmas, but sometimes not until Christmas Eve. Instead we sang the slow reflective songs of Advent.

It was hard not to notice the Christmas advertisements on television, even before the American Thanksgiving holiday.

And you can already see the Christmas fireplace on television or listen to Christmas songs on television or on Christian radio stations such as Shine FM. At times it seems as if we are in more of a hurry for Christmas to come than even when I was a young child who

was “dying” for Christmas Day with my stocking and a couple of small presents and the cousins coming over…

Strange then that God was not in a hurry! In Luke we read that Jesus was born at just the right time… at the exact moment in history that God had determined.

It was a time which would split history – BC and AD. It was the time when God would send his Son into our neighbourhood.

It was the time when God would be born as a baby, in the very world he had created… with a purpose.

On one level the narrative of Jesus’ birth seems calming.

He was born and placed in a manger. He had parents who loved him and shepherds who came to worship him and then spread the Good News.

On a different level it is world changing. God was born into our world.

God came to love us and heal us. God came to rescue us.

God came to bring us peace, joy and hope. God came to bring new light into our hearts and lives.

Take your time and enjoy this Christmas.

Enjoy the lights and trees and carols and maybe even a silly Christmas movie or two.

Most of all enjoy the gifts which Jesus brings to you.

Charlie Brown explores the meaning of Christmas Armand Houle Summerland United Church Every year I make it a point to watch “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

In the story Charlie Brown questions what Christmas means. He wrestles with the disconnect between what is going on around him, the buzz, the excitement, the buying, the list making, the decorating, the parties and the feeling of emptiness that he feels in his heart. At one point in the story he becomes so exasperated that he throws up his hands in despair and cries out, ‘Isn’t there anyone who understands what Christmas is all about?”

At this point his pal Linus comes to the rescue reciting this familiar passage from the second chapter of the Gospel According to Luke.

Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.

And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.

And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:“Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward all!” Luke 2: 8-14 After Linus speaks you can just see and feel Charlie Brown’s heart being filled with joy and understanding.

It is hard to not get caught up in the buzz, excitement and chaos that has come to be associated with Christmas. In fact the months before Christ-

mas can be so busy, so full, and at times so overwhelming we can forget that the whole point of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of a child long ago. The reason we remember and mark his birthday is because of the extraordinary person that he became, the message he proclaimed and the example he set.

We celebrate and remember his birth because of his life and what he means to us.

Now did Jesus birth happen exactly like it is recorded in the Gospel of Luke? Probably not. In fact most mainline biblical scholars would say no. But does this mean that this story is empty of meaning? No! The story of Jesus’ birth as recounted by Luke is full of meaning because they tell us of the hopes and dreams and meaning that those first followers of Jesus found within his life. This ancient story tells of a vision of God whose desire for all humanity is liberation

and freedom from all that seeks to bind us and prevent us from becoming fully human. It is a vision for humanity that would see us at peace with one another and creation.

Has the church always lived into this vision?

Not always, and for these mistakes we need to repent, seek forgiveness and change our attitudes, understandings and ways. But our failures as a church to live into the vision of good news of peace for all, does not discount the vision.

In fact we need, now more than ever, to cling to this vision of “peace for all” proclaimed in Luke’s gospel.

My Christmas wish for everyone is that like Charlie Brown we can overcome the hype and chaos of what is now the season of Christmas and hear with new ears the wonder and mystery of an ancient story of the birth of a child long ago whose message of peace for all people is light for our world.

to support local charities.

The Mistletoe Ball, on

Saturday evening, will replace the former 911 and Friends event.

It is organized by Summerland’s emergency services workers.

The event, at the Summerland Arena Banquet Room on Jubilee Road East, will begin with cocktails at 6 p.m, a dinner at 7 p.m. and a dance at 9 p.m.

The evening will also feature door prizes and raffles as well as a silent auction.

Proceeds will go to local charities.

Those who are attending are asked to bring an unwrapped toy, a donation for the Summerland Food Bank or both.
