RCMP return chainsaw missing since 2007

An Alberta resident got a surprise last week when Creston RCMP called to tell him his stolen Stihl chainsaw had been located.

The saw was found on the road near Hillside Street and Eighth Avenue North and when police checked out the serial number they discovered it was listed as stolen, and had been since 2007.

Police Beat Police responded to 62 calls for service from Nov. 29-Dec. 6, Staff Sgt. Darryl Hammond said on Monday.

November 29 •Licence plates were stolen from a vehicle on 16th Avenue North.

•Police were called to a fight at a residence in West Creston.

November 30 •A report came from Helen Street that a female had been asked for nude photos on Facebook.

December 1 •Police checked on the wellbeing of a person on North Goat River Road for Surrey RCMP. •A Highway 21 resident reported the theft of a cat. The theft occurred four years ago, she said.

•Garden clippers, bottles of butane and a hanging basket were stolen from a shed on 24th Avenue South.

•A wallet found at Canyon Street and 10th Avenue North was returned to its owner.

•An 80-year-old male died when he missed a curve on Elsie Holmes Road in Wynndel and went over the bank.

•A Northwest Boulevard resident reported that plastic

on the residence windows had been cut in an act of mischief.

December 2 •A 64-year-old male died in his Crestview Road home of natural causes.

•A trailer stolen in Cranbrook was recovered in the 7400 block of Highway 3A. •A vehicle driving in the dark without lights was reported on Highway 3 near Canyon.

•When police responded to a landlord-tenant dispute in the 400 block of Seventh Avenue, he found the tenant to be in breach of an undertaking and he was arrested.

•Charges are pending against a male who breached a court order by attending a Northwest Boulevard residence and contacting a specific person.

December 3 •A vehicle was reported to be on fire on Duck Lake Road, outside of the fire protection area. Police determined it had been stolen.

•A school bus driver reported an incident on Northwest Boulevard in which a rude driver was driving a vehicle erratically.

•A vehicle went off Highway 3 and down a bank in icy road conditions near Kootenay Pass.

Worn tires were a factor.

•The source of a loud boom reported at Eighth Avenue South and Cedar Street was not determined.

•A landlord-tenant dispute arose on Elm Street when a tenant playing loud music refused to answer the door.

December 4 •Police received two reports of a vehicle in the ditch near Kitchener on Highway 3 but it was gone when they arrived.

•An erratic driver was reported on Highway 3.

•Police assisted Merritt RCMP in an investigation of domestic threats.

•An intoxicated female located on 18th Avenue South was housed in police cells overnight.

•A vehicle reported to have gone off Highway 3 on Kootenay Pass was not located.

•Icy roads were a factor in a vehicle going off Highway 3 about 10 kilometres west of Creston.

•In similar conditions two vehicles went into the ditch on Highway 3 at Irishman Creek and a semi jackknifed, blocking the road.

December 5 •A dirt bike was reported missing from a 44th Street property.

•Fraud to obtain fuel was reported at a Wynndel business.

•A disturbance involving intoxicated guests was reported in the 900 block of Canyon Street.

December 6 •A Northwest Boulevard apartment resident complained about neighbours slamming doors.

•A suspicious person on the railway tracks was reported near Kingsgate.

•After an assault of a family member on Hillside Street, an intoxicated youth was arrested and kept in police cells until sober.

•A landlord-tenant dispute was reported on Reclamation Road.

•A large ice chunk broke loose from the rock on Highway 3 near West Creston Road, partially blocking the road.

•A vehicle lost control on icy roads near Kootenay Pass and went over a bank.

•Shots were reported in the 35th Avenue South area.

Winter driving tips from page 1

•Watch for black ice, a thin layer of transparent ice that forms when the temperature is close to freezing. Slow down when approaching shaded areas, bridges and overpasses, as these freeze sooner than others in cold weather.

•Drop your speed to match road conditions. No matter how much driving experience you have, the way your vehicle will move on snow or ice is unpredictable. The posted speed is the maximum speed for ideal conditions.

In winter, it’s safer to drive below the posted speed limit.

•Always check weather and travel conditions before heading out on the road, and if they are bad, avoid travelling. Even an hour or two can make a big difference. If you have to drive, drive smart. Make sure your vehicle is winter ready, give yourself lots of extra time and carry a winter survival kit.

•Keep at least four seconds distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. This will allow plenty of room in situations where you may need to brake suddenly on a slippery surface.

•Carry an emergency survival kit with non-perishable food, blankets and first aid supplies,

windshield scraper and snow brush, extra windshield washer fluid, fuel line antifreeze, flares and matches or lighter, tire chains and gloves, shovel and traction mat, sand or kitty litter, flashlight and extra batteries, battery jumper cables, spare tire wheel wrench and jack, extra clothing and footwear, and sandbags for extra weight.

•If you get stuck in a storm, stay calm. Avoid overexertion and exposure. Stay in your vehicle and open your window slightly to make sure you have a supply of fresh air. Use a survival candle for heat. Set out a warning light or flares.

•Plan your route ahead of time. Avoid any roads that may become dangerous during bad weather. Respect road closure signs and barriers and do not attempt to drive on these routes until they are reopened.

•Learn winter road skills. If you are unfamiliar with driving in snow and icy conditions and your job requires you to be behind the wheel, ask your employer for winter driving training. Through training and practice, learn how to brake safely, how to get out of a skid and how your vehicle handles in winter weather.

Hammond also reminds drivers to be especially cautious when approaching highway maintenance vehicles. Slowing down and keeping a safe distance as the vehicles work to make roads safer is important, he said.

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats added two wins to their record on the weekend, visiting the Spokane Braves for a 6-2 win and shutting out the visiting Golden Rockets 3-0.

Creston is holding on to its secondplace ranking in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Eddie Mountain Division, with its 38 points placing it nine behind the Kimberley Dynamiters, and three and five points ahead of, respectively, the Fernie Ghostriders and Columbia Valley Rockies.

The Thunder Cats led the scoring in Spokane on Friday, with goals by Colby Livingstone, Carson Cartwright (power play) and Logan Wullum giving them a 3-0 lead.

“We kind of laid off in the second, the way teams do when you build a quick lead,” said head coach Jeff Dubois.

Ian Desrosiers and Cartwright (power play) each scored in the second, with Spokane matching the goals. In the third, Dubois said, the Thunder Cats controlled the game, with Spokane making only four shots and Liam Plunkett scoring for Creston with 0:05 remaining.

The 5-2 victory was a far cry from the shutout Creston suffered when they visited Spokane last year.

“This year was one where we wanted a good start, and we got up early and played through highs and lows, but ultimately got the job done,” said Dubois.

The game also marked the return of Livingstone, who last played for the Thunder Cats in 2014, before spending time with BCHL’s Trail Smoke Eaters, the Maritime Junior Hockey League’s Amherst Ramblers and, most recently, the BCHL’s Victoria Grizzlies.

“Being a hometown guy, I think he’s excited to get back in,” said Dubiois. “He certainly was a top guy on Friday night.”

He also praised the effort of Thomas Cankovic, acquired in a trade for Austin Dean to the Princeton Posse, where he was the rookie of the year last season and the second-leading scorer this year.

Cankovic earned an assist on Desrosiers’s second-period goal.

This weekend, another newcomer will join the Thunder Cats when Grant Iles, acquired Sunday, arrives. The former captain for the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League’s Comox Valley Glacier Kings has been earning a point a game.

“He brings a lot of leadership and grit,” said Dubois.

On Saturday, the Thunder Cats hosted the Golden Rockets — at the bottom of the Eddie Mountain Division with

nine points — but didn’t score until the middle of the second period.

“Their goalie made a number of real good stops in the first half of the game,” said Dubois. “We had some real good opportunities we didn’t convert on.”

Desrosiers scored the game’s first goal with 8:39 left in the second period — and because it was Teddy Bear Toss night, that first goal led to about 200 stuffed toys being thrown onto the ice to donate to the Creston Ministerial Association’s Christmas hampers.

Nicholas Kovacik followed with a goal about five minutes later, and Cartwright scored in the middle of the third period.

Dubois credited 16-year-old affiliate goalie Ben Kelsch — who plays for the Nelson-based Kootenay Ice in BC Hockey’s Major Midget League — with much of the success, stopping 30 Golden shots.

“For him to get the shutout is a pretty cool accomplishment,” said Dubois. “Not many guys get to say they got their first shutout in their first-ever junior game.”

This weekend, the Thunder Cats play a single game, visiting the Kimberley Dynamiters after hosting them yesterday.

“Kimberley’s the team to beat in our division,” said Dubois. “We’ve dug ourselves a bit of a hole. It’s really a chance for us to step up and narrow the gap on them.”

A tense three-set triumph over Charles Hays secondary highlighted the Prince Charles Bulldogs’ trip to the Big Kahuna B.C. volleyball championships in the Lower Mainland last week, where Creston placed 15th out of 16 teams.

The Creston senior team posted the 25-19, 19-25, 16-14 victory over the counterpart from Prince Rupert on Day One of the four-day AA provincials, which ran from Dec. 2-5 at the Langley Events Centre.

It was one of three preliminary round matches for the Bulldogs, who were competitive in almost all sets of the six matches played during the week.

PCSS dropped two-set matches to Woodlands of Nanaimo (which won 26-24, 25-15) and Sa-Hali of Kamloops (25-20, 25-19) to close out the round-robin portion of the tournament.

The 1-2 match record positioned PCSS third coming out of Pool D, one of four, fourteam groupings in the 16-team event.

That set up a championship draw meeting with Pacific Academy of Surrey, which placed second in Pool A. The Bulldogs battled hard in losing a best-of-five set match 25-17, 25-20, 25-11.

PCSS wrapped up the tournament with a pair of hotly contested 2-0 defeats on the consolation side of the draw, 25-23, 25-19 in a rematch with Woodlands, and 25-21, 25-23 to McRoberts of Richmond.

New Kootenay-Columbia MP preparing to work for constituents Thank you to the 63,203 people who voted in the Oct. 19 election. Almost 74 per cent of eligible voters in KootenayColumbia took that walk to the polls, which was amongst the highest in Canada! This election was an excellent

picked their offices first, Conservative MPs second, and we are in process of picking our offices now. The next update will include my Ottawa office information — even if we’re picking third it is an honour to have an office on Parliament Hill!

I also have to hire the staff. The NDP has unionized constituency and parliamentary assistants, and since we went from 103 seats to 44 in the election, there are several hundred qualified people in Ottawa who, under the contract, get the first opportunity to bid on the jobs both in Ottawa and across the country. That process is underway.

The MP has to serve constituents whether permanent staff is in place or not. In the last month, I have attended meetings and events in Fernie, Cranbrook, Creston, Invermere, Nelson, Kaslo and Johnsons Landing. There have been phone calls (250-919-9104) and emails (wayne.stetski@parl.gc.ca) and letters (P.O. Box 872, Cranbrook, BC, V1C 4J6 until Jan. 1, and then Unit B, 111 Seventh Ave. S., Cranbrook, V1C 2J3) to answer.

There have been about 100 letters so far, including those waiting for me in Ottawa. Experienced MPs have told me that once everything is up and running an MP can expect to get between 300 and 500 emails per day. If you have sent me some correspondence and haven’t heard back yet please be patient — you will get a response! Phone me if it is urgent.

In the last month I was also in Ottawa for five days participating in an intensive orientation focused on finance and admin and the non-parliamentary aspects of being an MP. We are given a budget that includes staff salaries, office leases, providing information to constituents, in-riding travel, etc. If we go over it, we pay for it out of our own pockets.

On average, we spend over six months of the year in Ottawa participating in Parliament and other national responsibilities (for example, I am the NDP critic for national parks) so I also have to find accommodation in Ottawa. The balance of the year is spent traveling around the riding meeting with constituents.

Our job as the progressive opposition is to make government and Canada better, and that is exactly what we will do!

Parliament begins today and continues until Dec. 11 before breaking for Christmas. My next update will include a look at what it’s like to sit in the House of Commons as your MP. I’m sure it will be an exciting and humbling experience!

St. Nicholas possessed the fruit of the Spirit. He lived daily with the Lord and was godly in all his words and deeds, proclaiming the Word of God. He defended the rights of the oppressed and afflicted. He battled injustice with compassion and mercy. He was a man who from his youth kept the great commandment to love God with all his heart and mind and soul, and to love his neighbour as himself.

“The giver of every good and perfect gift has called upon us to mimic God's giving, by grace, through faith, and this is not of ourselves,” said St. Nicholas.

From Parliament Hill Wayne Stetski example of how every vote counts, and it is an honor to serve you as your member of Parliament. So what’s been happening in the first month?

Starting out as a member of Parliament is incredibly busy. One of the challenges is setting up offices — my plan is to have staff in Ottawa, Nelson and Cranbrook for Jan. 4. This involves leasing new space and furnishing the offices with the recycled inventory used by the former MP, as the furniture, computers, etc. are all owned by the House of Commons. I plan on having one staff person in Ottawa and four in the riding so that you get good service here at home.

On the weekend, we made our first trip since the spring to Coeur d’Alene so that we could take in a bit of musical theatre at the Modern Theatre. With the drop in value of the Canadian dollar against U.S. currency, these trips are much more costly than they were only a year or so ago.

As I often do, I picked up a free copy of Inlander, a very good weekly publication, and it didn’t take long before an article grabbed my interest. In it, I learned of a growing scandal at Spokane city hall as revelations about cozy deals and outright lies begin to emerge.

It doesn’t seem all that long ago since I read another story in the Inlander about a then-new police chief who had been hired out of Indianapolis to clean up some serious problems in the Spokane police department. I don’t recall reading it in that story, but in the current issue we learn that the new chief was hired by the mayor, despite “the objections of a law enforcement advisory panel” back in 2012.

Last spring, in the run-up to municipal elections, the mayor got a call from a lawyer who represented a senior staff member of the police department. The mayor was told that the staff member, a female, was accusing the police chief of sexual misconduct, but she wanted to avoid the humiliation of going public with the issue. Instead, she wanted a transfer to a different department, one that would include a pay raise and promotion.

The mayor acquiesced, knowing full well that a scandal involving the guy he had hired wouldn’t help his re-election chances. Spokane, after all, had not re-elected a mayor to a second term in 42 years.

What followed was a classic coverup involving plenty of deception and the whole story didn’t begin to emerge until a few months ago. At about the same time that various media were

Lorne Eckersley beginning to dig a little deeper into the hitherto hidden story, separate groups from within the police department wrote the mayor accusing the police chief of being “a foul-mouthed tyrant who yelled at subordinates.”

When the police chief was finally forced to resign in September, an Inlander reporter asked if any sexual harassment complaints had been “lodged” against him and the mayor said no. “(Mayor) Condon now says that he didn’t intend to mislead with his answer, and spokesman Brian Coddington says that Condon’s answer was truthful because the mayor was referring to formal complaints,” according to the Inlander story, written by Mitch Ryals and Jake Thomas. A few days later, Coddington tried to deter the Inlander from pursuing the story and even called the newspaper’s publisher to complain about the questioning.

So now Spokane has a mayor who went out of his way to hire a police chief against recommenda-

tions, and then to cover up a messy situation. It has a former police chief who has filed a $4 million legal claim alleging his due process rights were violated. It has a senior city staff member who got a pay raise and promotion (and her legal fees paid for) because she didn’t go through the legal process after she was harassed.

I couldn’t help but feel ill when I read a quote from the president of Spokane’s council, Ben Stuckart, who told the Inlander, “Going forward, I don’t know how I trust a single thing anybody says. How do I as an elected official in the city of Spokane trust a single thing anybody says? I just don’t know. …

I’ve been lied to numerous times, and I think the public has been lied to for months.”

Sadly, these stories are becoming more and more common, and I can’t believe it is only because it is harder and harder to keep secrets in this age of cell phones and social media. Canadian towns and cities aren’t spared either, so this isn’t just a problem tied to the U.S. But once again I am reminded of how lucky we are here in Creston.

We aren’t perfect, far from it. But in my time here I have known and watched mayors Slam Salvador, Lela Irvine, Don Leben, Joe Snopek and Ron Toyota, and if anyone told me that any of them had told outright lies to the public or the media, or had personally gained from their positions, I would be amazed. I haven’t agreed with everything that any of those mayors did, but I don’t recall ever having felt I couldn’t trust them.

No end to appreciation

In my last column, I wrote about the insentience of human beings. But of course, we are also sentient; we sense, feel and express. The word “sentient”, at its roots, means “to go in feeling”. Conventionally, we say that something without thought is insentient. Rocks aren’t sentient. But what about plants? They adjust and move with conditions. Does that mean they are sentient?

Thirteenth-century Zen master Eihei Dogen said that everything is both sentient and insentient. To appreciate that about ourselves is crucial to our balance and health, and when we understand him, we will not doubt that mountains are both sentient and insentient; they are always walking. When we fully enter the mountains and stay long enough to shake off daily life, we feel this walking. We feel that we and the mountains know each other. When we fully enter the mountains, something magical happens, and we no longer doubt that the mountains are alive and moving.

Dogen said, “We should study the mountains using numerous worlds as our standards.” He was saying that there is no end to studying mountains. And this is true of us humans too. It is so fascinating to be alive. We can meditate forever and realize so much about our life.

But then we get up and go into the world to meet just one person. How much do we know about that one person? Hang around that person long enough and we can learn everything there is to know about

A Zen'sEye View Kuya Minague human beings. We could study philosophy and never finish learning about it. And even if you read them all, you have only read them in English. Why don’t you take up the German philosophers?

What we can understand about being alive is infinite. For example, I’ve been studying Buddhism for 30 years, and I know just a little. For one thing, hardly anything has been translated into English, and I don’t read Asian languages. It’s staggering to realize how much more there is to know. Research biologists can spend an entire life studying one insect and still feel they have only scratched the surface.

Anywhere you turn you will find something that is absolutely worth knowing. And everything is telling us something about life and all its colour and beauty, all its creativity and destructiveness. Dogen is saying that we can never finish appreciating this phenomenal world. On the one hand, he says, we don’t need to get up from our meditation cushion. We could sit for the rest of our lives, and everything is right there. But when we do get up from our cushions, whatever we encounter in this life is also completely interesting, mysterious and amazing. Whatever spiritual path we take up, we can realize this truth because everything is a study of the mountains walking.

Suggested practice: Take some time to study the piece of ground under your feet. How did the pebbles and dirt form? What ancient Earth process left them in the Creston Valley? What are the plants saying?

Wildlife may spend winter in unusual places

Years ago a friend related to me an account of what they may have thought was a winter oddity. As I remember them saying, they were headed up to their winter camp to do some sort of logging. There

The wind bracing needs to be tightened inside the structure and the side walls need to be positioned partly closed or fully closed before they freeze in place. The rope holding them down needs to be checked and replaced if it seems weak.

Once the snow hits, it is too late.

Between the last sales of the year and before we start pruning the orchard, it is time to look at all the buildings and machinery.

Are the sump pumps working?

Do we need to oil and grease any of the fans in the greenhouses or the cooler? Keep in mind that a lot of the farm equipment has been there for decades.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that when dealing with live plants anything can happen. The soilless greenhouse mixes are delivered around this time of year followed by all the pots and flats needed for spring production. For greenhouse operations to run smoothly, planning is essential. Late orders for items as basic as an under tray can run double the cost in spring and may cause a delay in production. The same goes for any small business, I imagine.

Nursery items can be bulk shipped in spring for better rates.

Late season orders can cost several times more per item on freight alone.

Last evening I was reading a small business consultant’s article on sales. Everyone loves a

good Christmas sale. In the article it was pointed out that while sales can be great for moving older stock or just plain increasing the foot traffic to your store, they can also be troublesome in that if the average store offers a 25 per cent off sale they would need to sell twice the product to reach the same profit margin. In some cases this is achievable and in others it isn’t. Even a 10 per cent off sale requires the store to move 35-40 per cent more product to reach the same bottom line depending on margins. Forty per cent more sales to me seems like 40 per cent more work. Forty per cent of a semi trailer of nursery stock weighs about 12,000 pounds and needs to be watered and cared for on a daily basis.

Thanks to artist Eileen Gidman, and sponsorship from Columbia Power, the Creston Valley Bird Fest has partnered with Cresteramics in the development of an art program to create a poster for promotional purposes.

This is the second project between the Creston Valley Bird Fest and Cresteramics giving persons with diverse abilities the opportunity to contribute to their community. The Cresteramics members look forward to every art class and the bird fest committee appreciates their dedication and creative output.

The fourth Creston Valley Bird Fest is scheduled to fly May 13-15, 2016. The event promises to be a weekend of fun and feathers full of guided bird watching expeditions, bird presentations, a photography workshop, locally made dinners, evening field trips and several uniqueto-Creston afternoon events. Some of these events include tours to the local honey and dairy farms, the community greenhouses, a lesson on backyard herbalism, kayaking to a cormorant colony, canoe trips and a children’s event at the Wildlife Interpretation Centre. The bird fest committee is pleased to host Jakob Dulisse, local wildlife biologist and photographer, at Friday night’s “Welcome to Creston” buffet.

Wildsight hosting Jumbo Wild film screening WILDSIGHT

This fall, Patagonia released Jumbo Wild, a gripping, hourlong documentary film by Sweetgrass Productions telling a true story of the decades-long battle over the future of British Columbia’s iconic Jumbo Valley, highlighting the tension between protection of wilderness and the backcountry experience and ever-increasing development interests in wild places.

The film will screen at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 14 at the Tivoli Theatre. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

A large-scale proposed ski resort threatens the rich wilderness of British Columbia’s Purcell Range — a revered backcountry ski and snowboarding destination with world-class terrain, sacred ground for local First Nations people, and part of one of North America’s most important grizzly bear corridors.

Directed by Nick Waggoner and Sweetgrass Productions, Jumbo Wild documents the epic tug of war — between community members, First Nations and conservationists, resort developers and politicians — over the future of Jumbo. Set against a backdrop of incredible backcountry ski and snowboard footage, Jumbo Wild features unprecedented documentation of all sides of a divisive issue bringing the passionate local fight to protect the Jumbo Valley to life for a global audience for the first time.

Since 2012, Patagonia has provided financial support to Wildsight in its activism efforts to “keep Jumbo wild”.

The campaign achieved a significant victory this summer when the environmental certificate was rescinded, but the next step is protecting the Jumbo Valley forever.

The Jumbo Glacier Resort is a proposed four-season “European-style” expansive ski resort with thousands of beds in the heart of the wild, remote Jumbo Valley and providing access to several glaciers. There are currently eight ski resorts — Panorama, Kimberley, Fernie, Kicking Horse, Revelstoke, Whitewater, Nakiska, Norquay,

Sunshine and Lake Louise — within a four hour radius of Invermere, none of them are running at capacity.

For 24 years, local residents, skiers, riders, alpinists, grizzly bear advocates and the Ktunaxa Nation have strongly opposed the corporatization of their beloved backcountry wilderness. Developers say their proposed year-round ski resort would be a snow rider’s dream, but Kootenay residents — including many who love to ski and support local ski resorts — don’t want it.

To the Ktunaxa Nation, the Jumbo Valley is known as Qat’muk, home of the grizzly bear spirit. The area is of profound spiritual and cultural importance and the resort would undermine

Footlighters casting Cinderella sequel, Stepsisters’ Revenge FOOTLIGHTERS THEATRE SOCIETY

With three productions completed for its 21st season, Footlighters Theatre Society is holding auditions Dec. 15 (children and adults) and 17 (children only) for a fourth, a sequel to the group’s 2013 soldout run of Cinderella.

The Stepsisters’ Revenge, running March 17-19, will return to the land of Crestonia, where Lady Violet and Lady Petunia are scheming to get even with their stepsister Cinderella, who married Prince Charming after Violet and Petunia’s ballroom antics proved useless in attracting his attention.

“Cinderella was the best-attended Footlighters production ever,” said Jason Smith, who wrote The Stepsisters’ Revenge to follow Frank Goodsir’s Cinderella. “I thought, why not continue the story while it’s still fresh in everyone’s mind?”

In addition to co-directing the show with Gillian Wells, Smith will

return to the role of Violet, along with Brian Lawrence as Petunia, Jennifer Adams as Mama and Gail Kitt as the Fairy Godmother.

The directors are looking to cast Cinderella and the prince, as well as an enchantress, a wizard, a knight and Frankenstein’s monster, and an ensemble of prison guards, nuns and ball guests. And 15-20 children are also needed in the cast — Cinderella and the prince adopted the orphans seen in the first show. With all roles, the ability to sing is important.

“This is going to be a great family show, with a lot of music and humour,” said Smith. “And with plenty of small ensemble roles, it’s perfect for kids or adults who are performing for the first time.”

Auditions for children and adults are 7 p.m. Dec. 15 and auditions for children only are 7 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Sasquatch, and will include cold readings from the script and song selections taught at the session. Kathleen (Carter) Hood 1928 ~ 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Kathleen (Carter) Hood at the age of 87 years.

Kath was born in Grand Forks, B.C. in 1928 to Douglas and Adeline Carter.

She spent her early years in Grand Forks and Langley and finished high school in Trail. After attending Normal School in Victoria, Mum began her teaching career in Creston, B.C. in 1948, where she met and married Richard Hood in 1951. They had a family of four children until the untimely passing of their eldest son, Ian, in 1972.

Kath was a well-loved primary, elementary, and, in the last 14 years of her career, a kindergarten teacher who taught many of Creston's kids while raising her own family. After their retirements, Kath and Rich enjoyed travelling and spending time at the family cabin they built at Kootenay Lake. Rich passed away in 1994.

She remained active socially, attending the United Church, quilting, travelling, bird watching and she especially enjoyed playing bridge with her longtime friends while making new friends along the way. Kath also enjoyed spending time with her family, sister Irene and brother-in-law Maury Murphy and with her dear friend, Jean Sacenieks.

She travelled to many parts of the globe including Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe and enjoyed seeing new cultures and landscapes. Kath was an avid reader who loved mystery novels.

Idaho choir presenting annual Christmas concert BONNERS FERRY COMMUNITY CHOIR

Twenty years ago, Vicki Blake Thompson took over conducting the Bonners Ferry Community Choir from Barb Nelson, who was moving to Pendleton, Ore. Little did either of them ever guess that it would be the beginning of a new career and love for Blake Thompson, who has been conducting various choirs in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, ever since.

This year’s 40th annual Christmas concert features over 60 local singers in Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. The program features a wide variety of musical styles with both familiar carols and new Christmas music.

Special guest artists are Sophia Smith, a cellist from Creston, Diane Olson on piano and marimba, and Ligeia Reinhardt on marimba.

A reception follows each performance in the fellowship hall of the church. This concert

and the reception has become a wonderful tradition in Bonners Ferry. For many it is the event that ushers in the spirit of the Christmas season.

The concert runs 7:30 p.m. Dec. 18 and 3 p.m. Dec. 20 (an hour behind Creston) at Bonners Ferry’s Trinity Lutheran Church.

Suggested donation is $10 for adults, $5 for students and $28 for an immediate family.

John Robert (Jack) Smith June 22, 1946 ~ November 28, 2015

She spent every summer at her beloved family cabin at Kootenay Lake where she could also enjoy time with her five grandchildren and the hummingbirds.

This year, as always, she had planned a busy Christmas with her family, unfortunately this was not to be. Kath passed away peacefully in Creston surrounded by family on November 27, 2015.

She is survived by son Neil (Setsuko); daughters Shatmon (Kevin) and Glynnis (Dee); grandchildren Mark, Michelle, Noah, George and Shaun, and sister Irene (Maury) Murphy. She also leaves behind nieces, nephews and their children as well as many dear friends. Her sense of humour, strength, friendship and generosity will never be forgotten and she will remain in the hearts of her family and friends forever.

We miss you Mum. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at 11 am at the Creston & District Community Complex - Creston Room, with Reverend Paula Ashby officiating.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of John Robert (Jack) Smith.

Jack was born in Calgary, Alberta, June 22, 1946, to Marion Zuffa (Smith).

He was adopted and raised by Emily Elizabeth (Bess) and Lemert Smith in Fernie, BC, where he met and married Carol Shrumm in 1970. Together they raised son Shawn and daughter Stacey.

After working for Dawson Construction and as a first aid attendant for the underground mines, he found his niche in accounting while working for the local Elk Valley Mining companies in Michel, Elkford and Corbin. In his spare time, he ran a hobby farm in Hosmer raising sheep, cattle and farming the land. Before leaving the area he worked for the local school district and then McDonald Ranch and Lumber. Deciding he wasn’t ready for retirement, Jack worked at Home Depot in Cranbrook, BC until he moved to Creston, where he was ready to formally retire and become involved as a community volunteer.

Family was of utmost importance to Jack. His proudest moments were the births of his son, daughter and then his grandchildren. Jack spent many hours researching anything and everything on the internet, he was the ‘go to guy’ when you needed information or assistance of any kind. Jack took his responsibility as Treasurer of the Creston Valley Blossom Festival Association very seriously and was looking forward to being an

integral part of the 2016 - 75th Diamond Anniversary Festival celebrations. It will not be easy to find someone to fill the void that he leaves.

Jack was predeceased by his mothers Marion and Bess, father Lemert, sister June Dokken, brother Rodney Smith, uncle Dave Dryden and nephew Jack (Butch) Clarke.

He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by those who survive him, his partner Bev Caldwell; son Shawn (YoungJoo) Smith; daughter Stacey (Franco) Portincasa; Carol Smith; stepchildren Steve (Rachel) Cox, Ken Cox, Darren (Tamara) Cox and Trevor Caldwell; grandchildren Jonathan, Darius, Ohnyou, Parker, Phoenix, Raelyn, Lane, Greyson and Maverick; and sister Francis Clarke, along with many nieces and nephews.

A private family memorial will be held in the spring of 2016.

Emerging artist holding first show

BY MARC ARCHAMBAULT Monique Archambault, known to most as Niqi (pronounced Nikki), will be showing her acrylic on canvas paintings to the public for the first time Dec. 14 at the Sasquatch.

She will be presenting the results of an ambitious 18-month project consisting of a series of 12 paintings inspired by the beauty of the Creston area, each representing a different month.

The mother of two teenaged daughters, Archambault is unable to work outside of the home due to a chronic pain condition. But it was through learning to manage her condition that she discovered her talent for painting.

“I was taking a class for chronic pain and they suggested to explore things that you enjoy doing to find a distraction that would engage you enough to distract you from the pain,” the 40-year-old recalled. “I remembered really enjoying painting with my daughter when she was younger, and we still had some supplies, so I thought maybe I’ll try it again. And it helped so much! Those one or two hours I’m able to sit and do it, my pain is gone and I’m happy.”

After a few successful paintings, Archambault heard about a grant program for new artists and decided to apply.

“I knew I wanted it to be inspired

by Creston,” she said. “And I wanted to do a calendar because I’ve always loved them. It’s exciting to get a new one every year and look at the artwork.

Her proposal was approved and she got to work.

Still a beginner, she learned and applied new techniques as she went. The progress can be seen from the first painting to the last ones.

“I learned so much through this process, and kept going because I had this goal,” she remarked. “I was so grateful to have the support and encouragement of the [regional arts council].”

Even though she’s happy to be finished the project, Archambault will not be resting on her laurels.

“I’m going to jump right back in,” she said. “I’ve got another painting on the go already.”

Archambault’s art show runs 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Sasquatch.

Admission is free and refreshments will be provided. Guests can enter to win an original eight-by-ten painting. A calendar featuring all 12 paintings is available for purchase.

This project was made possible by a Columbia Basin Trust grant, and a Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance grant from the West Kootenay Regional Arts Council (WKRAC) and the Community of Creston Arts Council.
