2015 TRIBUNE FOOD & TOY DRIVE
Welcome to the 13th Annual Tribune Food & Toy Drive The Salvation Army in Williams Lake is continuing to see a growing need to help families living in poverty. While there may be a few late applicants to come, Capt. Ben Lippers says the Salvation Army is now preparing 266 food aid vouchers for families and individuals in need this Christmas. Among those receiving help will be 385 adults and 273 children. There are 98 single people needing help. Toys and gifts are being collected for 206 children under age 12 and 67 teenagers, ages 13 to 17. Capt. Isobel Lippers suggests that people purchase board games; lego; craft and drawing items; and gift cards for sports, movies, and pool passes. “The most popular this year seems to be lego, video games and board games,” Isobel says. The Salvation Army is also seeking help from the community in the form of cash donations to provide the Christmas food vouchers and donations of toys and gifts for children and teens.
Captain Ben Lippers and his wife Captain Isobel Lippers look forward to this years Tribune Food and Toy Drive. He says cash donations are important because the Salvation Army no longer puts together Christmas food hampers. Instead people are provided with food vouchers, so they can shop with dignity for their Christmas dinner at local grocery stores, Ben says. Families will receive $25 per person to a
maximum of $150 per family; plus an additional $25 for a turkey. He says single people will receive a $25 food voucher, plus an additional voucher for a ham. He says the Salvation Army is making up food vouchers this Christmas totalling $19,500 which is substantially higher than the $13,000 spent the previous year and the $9,000 spent the previous year. While the deadline for Christmas assistance came and went last Friday, he says they continue to accept applications for emergency cases right up until Christmas. On Christmas day, he says the Salvation Army will also be providing a Christmas dinner for people in need or those who may be alone this Christmas at the Salvation Army cafeteria starting at noon. While the Christmas food supplement program is run on a voucher system, the Salvation Army continues to provide ongoing food support for families through the food bank and its soup kitchen. The latest fiscal year numbers show the Salvation Army in Williams Lake serving
27,500 breakfasts and lunches in their cafeteria valued at $179,831. A total of 5,786 food hampers from the food bank were also provided during the year to families and individuals in need. There were 2,000 more breakfasts and lunches served and 500 more food hampers provided this year than last year, Ben says. “For the food bank our most needed items are peanut butter; canned fruit and vegetables; canned pasta; Kraft dinner; chunky soup; and canned meats,” Isobel says. One of the ways people who feel more comfortable financially this Christmas can help the Salvation Army is by supporting the Tribune’s annual Toy and Food Drive exchange that is coming up on Saturday, Dec. 12 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Tribune/ Weekender Advisor office at 188 Second Avenue North. In this fundraiser businesses all over the community have come together to encourage people to support the Salvation Army by providing gift certificates in exchange for their donations of cash and toys and gifts for children and teens in need this Christmas.
