Rudolph’s Gift Shoppe seeks gifts for teens

More donations for ‘tweens’ and teens are needed.

Upon entering Rudolph’s Gift Shoppe at the Albion Fairgrounds, garbage bags filled with donated items sit at the front of a room.

A few weeks ago, this building was empty but now the gift shop, made possible by the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society, is filled with rows of tables displaying jewellery, jackets, shoes, and other used items.

In the back of the building, rows of Barbies, Hot Wheels and other brandnew toys are organized on different tables.

Price-points of “free” $10, $15, and $25 are listed by the various gifts.

Volunteers sifted through black garbage bags, and organized donations on the different tables.

Most of these volunteers have been at the hamper daily since Nov. 16, in preparation for the shoppe’s opening on Saturday Dec. 5.

On Dec. 5, 12, and 19, the shoppe opens from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for families registered with the hamper to take what they need of the donated items that

For each child in a family, the parents receive a $75 credit that they can use towards the brand-new toys and gifts in the backside of the shoppe.

For Lorraine Bates, co-chair of the hamper, donations made for the “teens and ‘tweens” are her biggest concern.

“They’re kind of forgotten; it makes me sad,” Bates said.

The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows hamper supports youth up to the age of 18, whereas other bureaus only support children to the age of 14.

Last year, 546 families were registered with the society.

As of Dec.1, 220 families have registered, with four registration dates still left.

“People very often want to shop for [and donate] little kid’s stuff [and] lots of time it’s because even if they were their own children, they don’t know what to get a teen,” Bates said.

Traditionally, Bates has found hoodies, onesies, socks, and toiletries to be the most popular, often running out before the three open days are over.

Donations at Rudolph’s Gift Shoppe will be accepted until Dec.18.

Minister visits Maple Ridge Mike Bernier heard about the need for a new school in the Albion neighbourhood.

A new elementary school is on the wish list for the south Albion area.

That was the message conveyed to Education Minister Mike Bernier, who toured Albion Elementary and Thomas Haney Secondary on Monday.

Bernier toured Albion Elementary, where he viewed iPad technology, among other things, and then, while at

Thomas Haney, he toured the school’s virtual reality/engineering and technology class. He also stopped in at the masonry class to see the skills/trades program at work.

A meeting between the minister, School District 42 trustees, and superintendent Sylvia Russell brought up the need for another elementary school in Albion, which is a top priority for the district. A new school in the neighbourhood will ease the burden on Albion Elementary, which is 30 per cent over capacity.

Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton and Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows MLA Doug Bing also took part in the meeting.

A march in support of the United Nations Climate Change conference in Paris this week, took place at Spirit Square in Pitt Meadows on Sunday, one day before the summit got underway. Supporters came from through throughout the region, including Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Boston Bar, and Port Coquitlam to be part of the event.

A family toy sort at the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper got youth involved in helping the charity. Teens, tweens and their families gave of their time Tuesday evening to help the hamper during the busy Christmas season.

Described by police as a ‘prolific offender,’ Darren Paul Deadder, 36, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon in the downtown core of Maple Ridge.

Trench digging honours soldiers Grade 11s were given a small taste of wartime struggles.

Talk about hands-on learning: this past week, a couple dozen Grade 11 students dug a trench on the grounds of Thomas Haney Secondary, to get a taste of what Canadian soldiers who fought in the First World War had to endure.

The inspiration came from a Social Studies 11 project, in which they learned about the conditions of a war that spanned from 1914 to 1918 and remains the bloodiest conflict in Canadian history, taking the lives of nearly 61,000

The dig involved 20 to 30 students and those who spearheaded the initiative did their due diligence by calling BC One Call before the ends of their shovels touched toil.

“They went on the internet to look into various types of trenches,” said THS Socials 11 teacher Chris Connolly.

pieces of brick and found out that the piece of land was once an orchard.

Student Kellen Whalley said it’s been an eye-opening experience. “We started to realize the struggles that the soldiers went through.”

The goal, Whalley said, was to make the trench dig as “authentic as possible.”

The trench will be filled, with a 2015 school time capsule.

And while the weather was a factor in making the 11th annual Lower Mainland 4x4 Toy Run and Food Drive from Meadowtown Centre to scenic

Stave Lake a success, the charity cruise benefiting the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau was driven by volunteers.

One of the organizers, AJ Anderson, said the “Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau extends their awe and thanks to such a successful day.”

Unofficial numbers included: more than $3,000 in cash donations, 900 pounds of food, $670 in gift cards, and, Anderson noted, “lots of diapers and clothing items.”

The event’s raffles, clothing, decals, and food sales raised more than $3,000 for the cause, as well.

Cameron lauded the dancers, staff, and volunteers for lending their time and efforts for the cause.

“These people are giving up their time to make someone else’s Christmas [better] and you have to respect that,” Cameron said. “Everything they do is much appreciated by our organization.”

As for the naysayers, Cameron said there will always be some who “will have their two cents” about it, but he respects that.

“Those people would do well to meet the people who put their hearts and souls into putting this on,” Cameron said.

ew to the fundraiser are CaddyShack Girls calendars which will be sold at the event for $20 apiece, with proceeds going to the hamper.

“It was my idea because I’ve had regulars ask me for years, ‘You should put together a calendar,’” Van Lissum said. “We started doing photo shoots around the end of August, early September and they took about three months.”

Nannies not our problem

W

ell, that was a short honeymoon.

New PM Justin Trudeau was ushered into power amid a mood of positivity and change. After a Conservative government that, in its later years, had been mired in numerous spending scandals, from $8 orange juice to Mike Duffy’s trial, any new leader had to campaign to be clean.

And Trudeau did, decrying tax cuts for the rich that would have benefitted him and other members of Canada’s one per cent.

But now, having settled in, Trudeau suddenly has no problem accepting taxpayer money for things he could easily afford for himself.

The Trudeau family’s two nannies will be paid for out of the public purse, not the Trudeau family bank account.

That’s an astoundingly tone-deaf decision for a government just coming into power to. Especially after an election that wasn’t just fought over corruption and overspending, but over public access to child care.

On the spending side, Mr. Trudeau can certainly afford to pay for his own childcare needs. This year the PM will be paid $334,800, which happens to be more than 10 times the median income in Canada.

While other Canadians fret about finding a daycare they can afford, has space, and trust with their kids, at least one family can relax. Of course, with that kind of basic income they had no fears before, did they?

During the campaign, each of the parties had their plans for child care, with the NDP advocating a publicly funded system, the Tories looking to tax breaks for the middle (and wealthy) classes, and the Liberals… they promised to start working on a plan within 100 days of taking office.

Well, they certainly applied that zeal for action to taking care of their leader’s childcare needs. Let’s hope they drop the government funded nannies and start worrying about the rest of Canadians within the next couple of months. C’mon Mr. Trudeau. The clock is ticking!

hristmas comes but once a year, so you have to know how to get the most out of the brief, 25-day season.

We really start celebrating on Dec. 1. (Anyone who has been singing carols and stringing lights since early November will be exiled to northern Greenland when I rule the world!)

In those 25 days, we must cram food, entertainment, gift-giving, and if we have some time, some peace and love and goodwill and all that jazz. So which parts of the season are great, and which MATTHEW are overrated? Here’s my (100 per cent objective and not at all idiosyncratic) guide.

• Eggnog.

Rating: Very high.

Positives: Delicious. The cinnamon-dusted nectar of the winter gods.

pounds during the coldest season. Special because it’s only available for one season.

Plus, some deeply mistaken people think it tastes like congealed reindeer snot, and will give you theirs!

Negatives: You can only drink about a half-gallon at a sitting.

• Christmas movies Rating: High Positives: Variety is the big one. Every flavour of holiday celebration can be had, from the hopeful classics like Miracle on 34th Street and White Christmas to the sour cynicism of Bad Santa.

CLAXTON You can celebrate an action Christmas with Die Hard and Iron Man 3 or a horror Christmas with Black Christmas and Gremlins. Or you can mix and match.

Negatives: Your family will never want to watch the exact same films as you.

Great-grandma Ethel insists on Die Hard every year.

• Caroling Rating: High to medium Positives: It’s a nice thing to do with friends (if you can sing and don’t happen to sound like a sickly goat). Plus afterwards, you can drink hot cider or eggnog.

Negatives: I sound like a sickly goat.

• Presents Rating: High Positives: Getting gifts is great, giving them is even better. The best gifts are the ones that are perfect for the recipient, even though they didn’t know they wanted them.

Negatives: Someone will republish that Grinchy economic study allegedly showing that you’re better off giving people money. There’s a special place on Santa’s list for economists who try to undermine the concept of Christmas giving. Maybe they can trade their lumps of coal for cash.

• Christmas songs Rating: Low Positives: You can hum along, because you’ve heard them all about a thousand

times, I guess. That’s it.

Negatives: There are some classic songs and performances that hold up, but the good ones have been repeated even MORE often. I have had Bing Crosby’s White Christmas stuck in my head for the entire length of this column. For every overplayed classic, there are a dozen overplayed songs that you hate (or will learn to hate when they are driven into your skull by the mall’s music system).

• Food Rating: Very high.

Positives: Like Christmas movies, comes in every variety from traditional roasted-turkey to vegan. If your Christmas feast is a giant sushi platter from your favourite restaurant, that is a perfectly valid choice. Christmas is about enjoying food with your loved ones, so go for it, whatever it is!

Negatives: There’s an awful lot of it.

I’m told it’s possible to get tired of leftover turkey, but I’m not sure I believe it.

Mom gives no-grade system low marks Dear Editor, We are about to embark on an educational experiment that is about to destroy a generation of children.

No grades means we can foster the love of learning and passion without stress or pressure.

No grades will allow children to be uninhibited intellectually and all will succeed.

Or so the experts claim.

Sadly they are so wrong, they cannot see the damage they are causing.

Already, my above average intelligent child, is losing motivation to try in school, because doing the minimum achieves all that is asked of him.

He has missed letter grades so much, words cannot describe his feelings of loss.

No grades removes intellectual achievement, so no recognition of a job well done.

If no recognition or

achievement exists, what is to motivate the child to learn?

Nothing.

What is motivation to learn about something that does not interest you?

None.

We are about to create the most narrow-minded uneducated generation we have ever seen.

Recognition and the sense of accomplishment is what motivates all humans, we breathe it like air.

The no grade system is removing these necessary qualities out of school.

The real world is competitive and achievement driven, and school is supposed to prepare our kids how to manage in the real world.

Life is full of failures, successes, difficulties, and triumphs, so why are educators shielding our kids from what will ultimately teach them how to manage in a complex world?

We will lose the smart kids to mediocrity, average kids will never push themselves to be better, and the group that no grades were created for will

Slaughter ignored Dear Editor, In light of both scientific evidence and overwhelming public abhorrence, why has the plight of the grizzly not being addressed?

We need change.

Federal scientists need to be free to openly communicate with the public, media and decision-makers.

Their findings regarding the endangering of grizzlies needs to be openly discussed.

An invisible man needs no clothes Dear Editor, The first session of our 42nd Parliament is scheduled to open today (Thursday, Dec. 3).

Before placing a bet that Stephen Harper won’t show up to take his seat on the opposition’s backbenches, I would like to know the odds being offered.

Given all the razzle-dazzle Prime Minister Justin ‘Sunny Ways’ Trudeau has been generating – both at home and abroad – poor, rejected Harper must be a-tossin’ and a-turnin’ night after night.

Harper was so smugly arrogant, one of his many unappealing traits, when he said: “You won’t recognize Canada when I’m through with it.”

Those were heady days for the myopic Conservative prime minster.

Now people of all political stripes are snickering about that infamous nude painting of him reclining on a sofa, and whenever anyone mentions the Hans Christian Andersen story, The Emperor’s New Clothes, the snickering turns into gales of derisive laughter.

Just in time for the busy Christmas shopping season in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, the new WalMart opened its doors to the public today.

In what’s being described as a “soft opening,” the store, located at Haney Place Mall (in the former Zellers and Target location,) opens today with general merchandise and dry groceries, said Wal-Mart spokesperson Felicia Fefer.

“While renovations are not yet complete, fresh groceries are coming soon,” she added.

“We will announce the date of the official grand opening in the coming weeks.”

est Coast Express (WCE) Santa Trains will once again be running this year on Dec. 5 and 12, to help kick off the holiday season and help out a worthy cause.

The Santa Train departs Mission city at 10 a.m. with Santa on board, and stops at all WCE stations along the way, including Port Haney at 10:19 a.m., Maple Meadows at 10:25 a.m., and Pitt Meadows at 10:29 a.m.

The train is scheduled to arrive in Vancouver around 11:15 a.m.

Once in Vancouver, people can enjoy a day of holiday sights and sounds before returning home from Waterfront Station at 4 p.m.

The Santa Train offers a free ticket to those who bring along a new, unwrapped toy donation (worth about the same as a WCE pass) for the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper.

“Anyone who would normally need a ticket – should provide a toy. You don’t need toys from small children as they would not normally need a ticket,” said Kyla Daman-Willems, WCE spokesperson.

In Vancouver, the WCE North Pole Station (Waterfront) will be open at of 2:45 p.m. for holiday activities and a photos with Santa.

The train is scheduled to return to Pitt Meadows station at 4:44 p.m, Maple Meadows at 4:48 p.m., and Port Haney Station at 4:54 p.m.

n Dec 5., roughly 11,000 people are expected to walk through Memorial Peace Park for holiday crafts, popcorn, and hot cocoa, and to get a glimpse of the homemade parade floats.

For Dianne Fernandes Enns, realtor at Royal LePage Brookside Realty, this will be her eighth year coordinating Christmas in the Park and the Santa Claus Parade – an event that has become a tradition for many Maple Ridge families.

“I’m a huge Christmas fan, lover of all things Christmas,” she said, when asked why this event is special to her.

Originally from Burnaby, Fernandes Enns grew up attending Christmas events throughout the Lower Mainland, including ice-skating in Robson Square.

Now, her time is devoted to bringing Christmas to Maple Ridge.

For the mother of two, Santa riding in a sleigh pulled by miniature horses through downtown Maple Ridge is a highlight of the season.

Most entries in the Santa Claus Parade offer lights and music.

“I’m always on 224th Street during the parade to help [with] the floats… and the look of joy and awe on the little kids faces as they see Santa is my favourite,” Fernandes Enns said.

The realtor got involved with the society when her family moved to Maple Ridge in 2001.

She is currently the co-president of the society.

This year, an estimated 25 groups and vendors will be

pitching tents at Christmas in the Park – although weather could play a pivotal factor in attendance, she noted.

Although the dual event has continued growing annually, there has been a decline in sponsors this year.

“We have lost a lot of sponsorships over the years [after] the economy took a hit,” Fernandes Enns said.

“A lot of businesses that used to donate either material

or money can no longer do that.”

The cost of the event is roughly $11,000, a majority used for security, insurance, and flagging at intersections and along the parade route.

In November, the society found themselves facing a shortfall of $3,000. Since then, several small businesses have stepped up with donations ranging from $300 to $500, to recover those losses.

“People who had never donated in the past donated, and it was little amounts that they could afford,” she said.

Keeping it free is important to Fernandes Enns.

“We want to ensure that everybody, regardless of their money situation, can afford to enjoy our event without worrying about what things may cost.”

Christmas in the Park runs 4 to 8 p.m. with local band the Johnson Brothers performing at the bandstand at 7 p.m.

The Santa Claus Parade begins at 6 p.m. heading east along Dewdney Trunk Road from Plaza Street to 224 Street, and south to Selkirk Avenue.

Tire entrepeneur saves Christmas – twice

M

ike Scarlett, owner and sole operator of Scarlett Tire Services, will be retiring on Friday, Dec. 4 – closing his mobile tire business “for good.”

After running his business out of Pitt Meadows for the past decade, Scarlett decided to do “something nice for the City of Pitt Meadows,” by donating $3,200 to this year’s City celebrations – both A Pitt Meadows Christmas and the CP Holiday Train.

“He’s saved Christmas not once, but twice,” City spokesperson Lorna Jones explained of his contributions.

The first $2,000 of Scarlett’s donation will cover costs associated with A Pitt Meadows Christmas on Friday, including snow sculptures, the lighting of the Pitt Meadows Christmas tree, and a performance by the Bruce James Orchestra.

He is donating a further $1,200 for the upcoming CP Holiday Train visit Dec. 18.

Meadows Christmas planning committee, the donation was a surprise.

“We were quite concerned, funding was an issue,” Hayes said. “This $2,000 was completely unexpected.”

“Mike’s concerned about what’s happening in the community,” Hayes said.

“He genuinely doesn’t want to see any of these events disappear.”

Festivities continue Sunday The festive seasonal celebrations continue in Pitt Meadows on Sunday, Dec. 6,

as well.

The Osprey Village Business Association will once again be hosting its annual treelighting event, for the seventh year running.

A large Christmas tree will be lit and other decorated Christmas trees will be on display.

As a free family event, arts and crafts will be offered, and Christmas carols will be sung as the village is lit up in lights.

“Every year we try to invite others that live beyond Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge,” said Anahi English, owner of Stomping Grounds cafe and board member of the business association.

“I think it’s pretty amazing that this event is getting bigger and bigger, and it’s nice to say that it’s the seventh annual [year],” English said.

“It’s nice to give back to the community that supports all of us.”

The treelighting celebration runs from 5 to 8 p.m. with the first 200 attendees receiving free hot chocolate and cookies.

Maple Ridge’s own “glam rapper” is hosting an evening of eclectic entertainment, to support women and children supported by the Cythera Transition House Society.

Kyle Herman, a.k.a. Arak StarrEagle, and other local performers are rallying to raise money for the transition house from 5 to 11 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6 at the Jolly Coachman Pub, located at 19167 Ford Rd., in Pitt Meadows.

The Halcyon Imagineers – a charitable artist collective based in Maple Ridge – will be gathering donations during the event.

“We’ll be going all out,” said Herman, a self-professed altruistic philosopher and inventor of glam rap. “There will be quite a mix.”

For Herman, supporting Cythera House’s mission to end violence and abuse of women and children hits close to home.

“They are put into a situation where they are hurt – even by those close to them,” he said.

The Imagineers first worked with Cythera last year, and it is now one of Herman’s favourite charities to support.

The show at the Jolly Coachman, which is called Diamonds in the Sun Two: The Eagles Have Landed, also features a variety of performers, including Rick Moyer, who Herman describes as the “epitome of cool and charisma.”

Poet Gary Redmond also will perform for the audience.

“He has an amazing sense of humour,” said Herman.

Peter Tam will perform on the keyboard.

Sheldon D’Eith is also making an appearance and, said Herman, is sure to “bring the house down.”

Other performances include: Bob Cockroft, Anita Jacobson, Mika Turner, Joe Warden, Shannon Matter, Maverick Marcel Gamache, Brad Ward, Taylor Wilcox, The Great Atlas, Wendy Biscuit, Holly Krauchi and Shanel Mack.

Christmas – just like the one we used to know – has arrived at Maple Ridge’s Timberline Ranch.

From Dec. 2 to 20, Timberline is hosting a Country Christmas at the 73 acre horse ranch at 22351 144th Ave. And while the Yuletide scenes set up at the ranch lean towards a classic Christmas (minus Jolly Old Saint Nick) modern technology is necessary to reserve a spot.

“The purpose is to present a traditional Christmas that families can come and enjoy together,” Douglas said.

“What people really enjoy is how relaxed of an atmosphere it is. Just like our slogan, ‘Come out to the country,’ it’s all about getting out to the country and enjoying it.”

New to this year’s event is a small hay maze in the barn, and Christmas trees decorated by local businesses.

Last year’s hugely popular event completely sold out, drawing roughly 4,300 people.

“We’re starting a little early this year, but there is still room [to register online] but it’s booking up well,” Douglas said.

Proceeds from Country Christmas will go to Timberline Ranch and its programs.

“We’re a charitable society, so any revenues that come in pay for the activities and go back into making Timberline the best place we can make it,” Douglas said.

And interest in the event itself is always growing, as well.

“Last year, the number of attendees who had their photos taken (groups and families included) was just shy of 300 people,” she said.

“This year, we’d like to see even more.”

Portrait assists those who simply can’t afford to have their photo taken professionally.

It’s a full day of people coming through for makeup, hair, smiles, a photo-session, and good feelings, Garcia explained.

And at the end of their photo session, each individual or family leaves with their own professional portrait, completely free of charge.

The 12 days include themes of both monetary donations and toys, non-perishable foods, and clothing.

With the help of the Maple Ridge -Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society, the items collected are organized into hampers and given back to Glenwood families that are registered with the society.

Roughly 20 families received a hamper last year, and the students were able to raise roughly 1,100 different items and $500.

The 12 Days of Giving has been met with such success, that it has since been adopted by two other area schools, Alouette Elementary and Scott Creek Middle School in Coquitlam.

The students collected the clothing as part of the Greater Vancouver Home Builders Association (GVHBA) 20th annual Coats for Kids campaign.

‘This was the first year we participated in this,”she said. “We collected for two weeks.”

The TIMES office, located at 22345 North Ave., is just one of a number of locations in town those who would like to donate clothes for those in need throughout the community can drop off items.

Last year, the response to Coats for Kids was overwhelming, as Lower Mainland residents donated more than 4,000 coats, scarves, gloves, blankets and new unwrapped toys and gifts for distribution to children, teenagers and adults.

There’s a specific need this year for winter coats and jackets for teens and tweens (ages 12 to 18.)

And there’s still time for those who would like to donate, as the campaign wraps up tomorrow, (Friday, Dec. 4.)

Locals play Ride safe for youth sports Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows talent was on display in Florida.

The Sunshine State wasn’t a bad place to be for seven field lacrosse players from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows recently.

Kennedy Gill, Ashleigh Lesser, Jayde Meredith, Sarah Ickert, Megan Kinna, Candace McDole, and Nicole Pahnke were part of Team BC’s senior and sophomore teams that competed at the deBeer President’s Cup Recruiting Tournament at the Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World in Orlando, Fla., and Lake Myrtle Sports Park in Auburndale, Fla., at the end of November.

The Team BC senior squad collected a 3-1 record during the three-day event.

They opened with a 6-4 win over the Pacific Falcons (California).

In the second game, the B.C. seniors defeated the Bearlax Sacramento HS (California) 11-5.

The only blemish to Team BC’s record was a 6-4 loss to Storm Selects (game postponed due to rain).

In the final game, Team BC Seniors trounced ELEV8 Elite (Alberta) 14-0 to round out the tournament.

The Team BC sophomores finished with a 1-3 record.

The local squad got on the winning side of the ledger with a 7-6 victory over BB18R (New Jersey) in its final match.

“The Senior Team performed well against some very good competition,” said Reynold Comeault Team BC Field Lacrosse co-ordinator and Pitt Meadows native. “I’m so proud of all of our athletes and their performances.”

The Team BC women’s field lacrosse high performance program consists of three women’s field lacrosse teams in the freshman, sophomore and senior age categories.

All Team BC women’s field lacrosse teams continue to train for their next competition at the 2016 Sandstorm Lacrosse Festival in Indio, Calif., on Jan. 16 and 17.

Operation Red Nose is back on the roads this season.

Calling for a safe ride home this holiday season can help benefit local youth and amateur sports teams in the community.

It’s all part of the mandate of Operation Red Nose: (ORN) a seasonal designated-driver service.

The service started last weekend and runs from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Dec. 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, and on New Year’s Eve. People who’ve had one too many, or not able to drive their vehicles can call ORN .

A team of three volunteers will be dispatched and the motorist will be driven home in his or her own vehicle.

Operation Red Nose’s mascot Rudy the Reindeer reminds people to call for a safe ride home this holiday season. Donations made to the program help out local youth and amateur sports teams.

Meadows is 604-515-NOSE or 1-877-604-NOSE. One hundred per cent of the funds raised are turned over to local youth and amateur sports organizations.

PacificSport Fraser Valley has hosted the ORN in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows since 2008.

Donations collected from the ORN are used to provide sport programs and services throughout the Fraser Valley.

Maple Ridge Towing manager Dena Sorley is also the ORN Ridge-Meadows’ volunteer director.

“A lot of us volunteer to make sure people aren’t

making that wrong decision, and aren’t making that wrong call,” she said.

Pride player takes full ride to Phoenix Education offer one of three.

Sydni Kemper, a pitcher for Ridge Meadows Pride 2000 and Synergy Gold 18 teams, accepted a fullride softball scholarship to Grand Canyon

University (GCU,) in Phoenix, Ariz.

The offer was one of three the Langley native received.

She was scouted this summer by the Arizona Impact Gold at the 2015 Canadian Open Fastpitch International

Championships, and had the opportunity to play with the Impact in the Arizona Froshow and the Thanksgiving Shootout in Phoenix, in November.

Within days of the tournaments, she had three official full-ride

offers from Division I schools, and accpted GCU. “The biggest thing for me was head coach Ann Pearson and the assistant coaches,” said Kemper.

“They... are all very enthusiastic about the

game.”

Kemper throws a 62 mph fastball, and is a power hitter with a .426 batting average.

A runner with Golden Ears Athletics was at the top of her game this past weekend, as she managed a top 20 result. Madelyn Huston came 19th out of 188 runners in the youth girls four kilometre race, at the Canadian Natioanl Cross Country Championships in Ontario this past weekend.

Ridge Meadows Flames beat Langley last Friday 11-2, and lost to Mission 7-1 on Saturday. The next home game is this Friday at 7:30 p.m.
