Salvation Army launches annual Christmas campaigns Local church seeking support for year-round community ministry

T

he Christmas season marks one of the busiest times of the year for staff at the Red Deer Salvation Army, with the launch of the annual kettle campaign and an array of other events and fundraising initiatives.

With a goal of raising $210,000, the local kettle campaign was recently launched at Bower Place Shopping Centre.

By reaching this year’s fundraising goal, the Salvation Army in Red Deer will be able to support family service programs, provide year-round food hampers, Christmas assistance, counseling, senior programs and summer camps in 2015, said Major Larry Bridger of the Salvation Army Church & Community Services.

Several single beds are also purchased and given to eligible applicants each year.

“We usually buy about 10 and they are provided to families that are in need who apply,” he said.

Meanwhile, kettles are set up at Wal-Mart (north and south locations), Canadian Tire (north), Co-op (Deer Park), Parkland Mall by the Safeway entrance, Bower Place Shopping Centre, Save-On Foods (East Hill), Superstore and Costco.

Bridger said volunteers are needed for a variety of shifts.

“We’re doing relatively well with volunteers, but we could always use more,” he said. “Especially at a couple of places, including the Deer Park Co-op and on the north end - Canadian Tire and Parkland Mall,” he said, adding there are openings at the other locations as well. Anyone interested in signing up for a two-hour shift can call Debbie Lang, the Christmas Kettle coordinator, at 403-346-2251.

As for the campaign’s history, it started in 1891 when Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee was distraught because so many poor individuals in San Francisco were going hungry. According to the Salvation Army web site, “During the holiday season, he resolved to provide a free Christmas dinner for the destitute and poverty-stricken. He only had one major hurdle to overcome — funding the project.

“He lay awake nights, worrying, thinking, praying about how he could find the funds to fulfill his commitment of feeding 1,000 of the city’s poorest individuals on Christmas Day. As he pondered the issue, his thoughts drifted back to his sailor days in Liverpool, England. He remembered how at Stage Landing, where the boats came in, there was a large, iron kettle called ‘Simpson’s Pot’ into which passers-by tossed a coin or two to help the poor.

“The next day Captain McFee placed a similar pot at the Oakland Ferry Landing at the foot of Market Street. Beside the

pot, he placed a sign that read, ‘Keep the Pot Boiling.’ He soon had the money to see that the needy people were properly fed at Christmas.”

Meanwhile, local residents are also encouraged to dust off those jingle bells and pull out their Santa hats for the annual Santa Shuffle on Dec. 5th.

Those taking part raise pledges and tackle either the 5km Santa Shuffle Run or a 1km Elf Walk. Proceeds support Salvation Army Family Services programs.

“The Running Room started it over 20 years ago - anywhere they have a store they hold a Santa Shuffle. They take registrations and people pay to participate, but they are also encouraged to collect pledges. And there are prizes for those who raise the most money in pledges, and for those who come in first, second or third

in the run or the Elf Walk,” said Bridger.

Another initiative is the annual AdoptA-Family. Families needing to register for Christmas assistance are asked to call 403-346-2251 during business hours. As of last week, about 80 families had registered so far.

“Registrations go until the 11th of December, so we still have a ways to go,” said Bridger. “Last year, we did 180 - but our numbers are up right now in terms of families that are applying for assistance.”

There is also an increased need for sponsors for the Adopt-A-Family program. “With the economic times what they are, we’ve had a few who have called and said they weren’t going to be able to sponsor this year. So we could still use people help - that would be great to have.

“Our numbers (in general) have been up over this past year,” he said. “We’re seeing a lot of new people we haven’t seen before, and people applying for Christmas assistance that we haven’t seen before as

well. Obviously the economy is playing a big role in that - people are hurting. There is no doubt about that.”

Donations of food, gift cards for food and gift items and toys go into the packages which are later delivered to recipients in need.

Bridger said the kettle campaign funds also support a backpack program, where volunteers fill backpacks with a variety of foods on a weekly basis for kids, which ultimately helps out their families as well. Bridger said the Army recently received an award from the Red Deer Public School Board acknowledging how much of a difference the backpack program makes in many local families.

Other December events include the Community Christmas Dinner will once again be served at the Salvation Army Dec. 25th at 1 p.m. Last year, about 220 were served. A Christmas Eve candlelight service also runs at 6:30 p.m. editor@reddeerexpress.com

Plans for refugees taking shape

Community conversations are taking place, hosted by the Immigrant Centre, to address the needs of approximately 200 Syrian refugees that are expected to be in the City by the end of February.

Frank Bauer of the Central Alberta Refugee Effort (C.A.R.E.) said the community is expecting between 200 and 210 government-sponsored refugees in the City in the next few months.

Conversations are being held to develop solutions to issues such as inadequate affordable housing, health care needs, education needs and helping people adjust to the community.

“I’ve been impressed with the overall response of the community,” Bauer expressed.

“There are so many people who spontaneously contact us to ask, ‘Is there anything we can do to help?’

Individuals and organizations have started initiatives to help by collecting donations to help support these 200-210 refugees that we expect. I’m really impressed and I’m really happy with that.”

Last week a stakeholder meeting was held by Catholic Social Services (CSS) that provided a space to develop ideas and working groups to address issues in the community surrounding the acceptance of refugees. Red Deer is not new to accepting refugees, but this high number of refugees will require creative thinking to accommodate, officials have said.

Issues such as housing, health care, child care and more were discussed last week.

“Looking at housing, there is a problem overall with the regular number of refugees we are receiving into Red Deer - which is around 60-70 people a year. To find affordable housing is going to be a big challenge. There are low vacancy rates and the cost of housing is very high in relation to the allowances that refugees will get from the government,” Bauer said.

“Another challenge is education. If the projections are still correct that we will receive between 200 and 210 refugees out of the total of

25,000 coming to Canada, based on the family sizes and demographics of Middle Eastern families, we can except between 90 and 100 school-age kids coming to Red Deer. Trying to find a spot for them in the school system will be a challenge.”

Bauer explained as these issues arose, the meeting attendees formed groups made up of individual citizens, organizations and representatives to move forward with resolutions.

“Health is another challenge as well. There is already a shortage of family doctors, let alone family doctors who speak any Arabic,” Bauer said. “Out of these 200 refugees, it’s estimated that between 70-80 adults will need some kind of English as a Second Language (ESL) training as well. We’re filled there already.”

Bauer said from the discussion, several working groups have been formed to address some of these solutions and bring them to a reality.

He added the Immigrant Centre is receiving an impressive number of inquiries by phone, email and correspondence to their web site where people are saying, “What can I do to help?” and are wanting to provide donations.

Issues such as living accommodations, donations, and other suggestions on how to assist Syrian refugees are being channeled through the Immigrant Centre. Bauer said the agency will be one of the first notified when government-sponsored refugees enter the City.

“C.A.R.E. and CSS are registering anyone who wants to volunteer in any capacity,” Bauer said.

“They can contact us and we will put them on a list and as soon as we know more about Syrian refugees arriving, we will be in touch with these people.

“It can be in any form of help - temporary transportation, being a friendly, welcoming family or individual, any Arabic speaking people - which will be a great need - that will all be coordinated through C.A.R.E. and CSS.” Additional information on assisting refugees can be found on the City of Red Deer web site. kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

City council approves 2016 capital budget City council has approved the 2016 capital budget valued at $160.6 million. The capital budget includes projects that will take place next year, multiyear projects starting in 2016 or projects that require additional funding from previous years.

The 2016 capital budget focuses on key areas including infrastructure replacement and rehabilitation projects which include approved projects such as enterprise business applications, CPR pedestrian bridge remediation and crown paving. The budget also focuses on current growth projects which are focused within the current City growth area and include approved projects such as Alexander Way Phase 3, 67th St. corridor improvements and an additional snow storage site.

Future growth projects includes approved projects such as Electric, Light & Power service area expansion and the central park water trunk and community amenity projects include projects such as Riverwalk Phase 1, Memorial Centre preservation and enhancements to Great Chief Park and River Bend Recreation Area.

“With Red Deer exceeding 100,000 citizens and hosting major events such as the 2019 Canada Winter Games, we are

budgeting for the needs of our community now and in the future. With this, also comes the need to weigh and consider the current economic uncertainty.

To make our possibilities a reality we are targeting our investments towards projects and infrastructure that positions us as Alberta’s third largest city and we will continue to advocate for Red Deer’s needs with the provincial and federal government,” said Mayor Tara Veer.

With the approval of today’s capital budget, the City’s debt limit sits at 58%, which is below the 75% debt limit set by council.

“When we developed this budget for council’s consideration, we focused on balancing vision and economic reality,” said City Manager Craig Curtis.

“The reality is there is some economic uncertainty and recognizing this, we recommended a capital budget that is less than what we proposed in 2015 while putting forward a plan that respects council’s direction, vision and budget guidelines surrounding debt limit and tax increases.”

Along with the 2016 capital budget, Council approved the 2017-2025, $1.38 billion capital plan in principle allowing the flexibility for administration to adjust the priorities outlined in the plan based on community

need and project funding.

“A project’s inclusion in the capital plan does not mean that it is necessarily going ahead,

it simply means that the City is considering it, planning for it, and looking at financing options,” said Curtis. “We plan proj-

ects well into the future based on council direction, community needs and funding.”

OPINION Farming community up in arms over Bill 6 Yesterday in Red Deer hundreds who would be affected by the proposed Bill 6 flocked in protest to Westerner Park for a meeting held by the NDP. The province is working hard to quash concerns of this controversial legislation, which is set to begin in January, but it doesn’t seem to have much effect as momentum behind the protests seems to only be largely increasing.

According to the province, Bill 6, the Enhanced Protection for Farm and Ranch Workers Act, will allow every worker in Alberta the right to a safe, healthy and fair workplace. Currently, Alberta offers less protection for farm and ranch workers than any other jurisdiction in Canada.

If Bill 6 is approved by the legislature, two changes will happen on Jan. 1st.

These changes include that WCB coverage will be mandatory and farms and ranches will no longer be exempt from Occupational, Health and Safety laws.

Changes to employment standards and labour relations laws will follow, likely being made next spring.

As a start, Bill 6 will remove exemptions from existing workplace rules.

Then, existing regulations and codes will be amended in consultation with farmers, larger scale producers, industry associations and the public, according to the province. Farmers are protesting the change because they feel in general that they were not fully consulted regarding Bill 6 and that it is being pushed through too quickly. According to news reports they also say the rules should only apply to corporate farms, not small, family-run farms as farmers feel the Bill will prevent neighbours from helping out with such tasks as harvesting and calving.

According to the government, if passed, the OHS legislation would apply to all family members when they are involved in the commercial operations of the farm but not when they are involved in non-commercial activities around the private residence - working in the backyard vegetable garden, painting the house, or being involved in recreational activities would not be covered. However,

when working on commercial operations such as where crops, livestock, barns and or equipment shops are located, OHS legislation would apply. Even if a family member does not live in the residence connected to the land being farmed, the OHS legislation would also apply to that individual if they are involved in the commercial operations of the farm, according to the government.

Meetings have been held throughout the province and farmers and ranchers have attended in droves - driving their farm equipment, riding their horses and protesting the approval of Bill 6. And just on Monday 1,000 farmers showed up on the steps of the legislature in protest.

They are not the only ones upset about the proposed legislation. The Wildrose Official Opposition is not impressed either. Leader Brian Jean stated in an open letter that the NDP needs to take more time before passing the proposed Bill.

“Unless something changes, perhaps the most transformational rural legislation in a generation will come into force

just 45 days after first being made public, and impact over 40,000 farms across the province,” he said.

Jean said that calculating the impact on family farms is difficult, and that’s a big part of the reason to take more time.

“By January 1st, all farms will be expected to pay WCB premiums (1.7 to 3 per cent more on their payroll) regardless of the insurance they already carry. Bill 6 also greatly expands the definition of who is a farm worker, and even imposes regulations on unpaid friends and neighbours.”

It seems like if passed this Bill will have a large impact on many families across Alberta. Albertans have already been hit hard with falling oil prices and unstable economic conditions. Many farmers have said they are in favour of safer workplaces, but more consultation needs to be made and the Bill is not ready to be pushed through.

It will be interesting to see where this issue lands the Rachel Notley government.

Syria: The world’s first climate change refugees?

Canada has an opportunity to once again be known as a nation of small towns with big hearts greeting the world’s first ‘environmental refugees’.

ROBINSON Get ready Canada for a reinvigoration of the Nanaimos, Medicine Hats, North Battlefords, Selkirks, Thunder Bays, Rimouskis, Monctons, Dartmouths, Summersides, and Ganders as choice destinations for displaced persons fleeing chaos around the world.

Clearly, large segments of the global population are on the move, and some of them are being displaced by climate change. A sea of displaced walkers and boaters arc north-westward to Europe from northern Africa, Syria and Iraq. The U.S.

leadership debates leading up to the primaries discuss the tens of thousands of Mexican nationals who are seeking an American haven. And a stream of youth from Central America are hitchhiking up through Mexico to the Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California borders.

There are 19.5 million refugees in the world today, according to Citizenship and Immigration.

Their homelands are characterized as ‘war-torn countries’, and many are said to have experienced ‘unthinkable horrors’. The government website’s underlying premise is that political conflicts create refugee movements.

Only about 100,000 can be resettled each year, and Canada has recently been taking about 10,000 of those. As of Sept. 15th, Canada has resettled 22,405 Iraqi refugees since 2009. We have resettled 2,563 Syrian refugees as of Oct. 5th, but now we are committing to resettle a further 25,000 by early 2016.

As Canadians, we should be

proud of our values of fairness that underlie our actions of both refugee protection and resettlement assistance. We should also be aware that the causes of refugee status are changing.

No less a humanitarian than Prince Charles (Reuters: Nov. 23rd) is signalling that we should consider that the Syrian civil war is caused by climate change - to wit, a six-year drought that has dislocated farming families and forced them into cities like Aleppo, Damascus and ultimately Amman and Beirut.

Here, they found little work suited to their traditional skills; young men fell prey to sectarian brain washing. Their younger brothers and sisters have had nearly five years of no (or inferior) schooling. Under these conditions, caring parents will act in their children’s best interests.

In Charles’ analysis, “We never deal with the underlying root cause which regrettably is what we’re doing to our natural environment. I mean the difficulties

in 2008 with the financial crash - that was a banking crisis. But we’re now facing a real possibility of nature’s bank going bust.”

The cohort of Syrian and Iraqi refugees may be the first group of environmental refugees to move to more hospitable climes in large numbers. If indeed they are, the Canadian refugee system will have to be amended to deal with ‘environmentally torn countries’, whose inhospitable climates have set the stage for mass urban migration from rural villages and farms.

To such populations, Canada is a kind of Promised Land.

Underpopulated, potentially benefitting agriculturally from the early stages of global warming, and predisposed to middle-power diplomacy and decency, Canada is the kind of country people everywhere would like to raise their children.

Facing this uncertain world, Canada needs seriously to plan for a growing tide of refugees.

Expensive real estate and a high cost of living will bar some traditional recipient cities like Vancouver and Toronto from playing a key role. It is time for the smaller, less costly regional centres to move to the fore.

Whisker Rescue offers new spay/neuter program

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS One local agency has begun a new spay/neuter program which aims to help low income citizens with cats.

“Last year we ran a spay/ neuter program for Red Deer County, called the Rural Cat Roundup. This project was funded with $26,000 from Petsmart Charities and we were able to fix 229 rural-living cats,” said Amy Lockhart, president of the board for Whisker Rescue. “It was wonderful - the outpouring of support from our local veterinarians was unbelievable. The citizens who took part were compassionate, hard-working farm and acreage owners who wanted the best for all animals on their property. It was one of the most rewarding projects I have ever worked on.”

She added this year

Whisker Rescue wanted to focus on helping citizens living within the City of Red Deer and recently launched the Caring About Low Income Cat Owners (CALICO) program.

“The CALICO spay/ neuter project is partially funded by a grant from the Red Deer and District Community Foundation.

Essentially four parties will come together to share in the total costs including the Central Animal Clinic, Whisker Rescue, the Red Deer and District Community Foundation, and the cat owners. It is a new project for Whisker Rescue. We started accepting applications November 1st and plan to start sending cats in for surgery in December, January and February,” said Lockhart.

“The response has been quite good already. The project has not had any media attention yet, and we already have applica-

tions coming in on a daily basis. The project will be on a first come - first served basis so those in need should apply right away.”

She added Whisker Rescue believes that spay/ neuter projects are essential to rescue work.

“Every summer we are flooded with emails asking for help with stray cats and kittens. The problem is out of control. There are simply too many cats for our local rescues and animal controls to keep up.

We are all overwhelmed and struggling to handle the never-ending numbers of cats and kittens in need.

Research shows the only way we will ever see a solution to this problem is by spaying/neutering,” said Lockhart.

To apply for the program, applicants can fill out a form and declare that they are living as a low income resident of Red Deer (making less than $35,000 per year). Forms can be picked up at Central Animal Clinic

or found online at www. whiskerrescue.com. Forms can be emailed to whiskerrescue@live.com or mailed to P.O. Box 27138, Red Deer, T4N 6X8.

The cost to each approved applicant is $45 per cat. And the goal of the program is to spay/ neuter 100 cats under the project. Applications will be accepted until Whisker Rescue reaches that total.

SUSPECT SOUGHT AFTER MURDER

On Nov. 27th, Daniel Boyd Sawyer, 30, turned himself into the Red Deer RCMP in regards to the Nov. 18th homicide of Alan Beach, 31.

Red Deer RCMP are also seeking a second suspect in relation to this homicide. The second suspect is described as being a Caucasian male, approximately 30-years-old with short dark hair, clean shaven, approximately 5’10” tall and weighing 200 lbs. At the time of the incident, this second sus-

pect was wearing a dark coloured jacket, dark pants and a dark coloured baseball cap with a white logo on the front. The suspect may also be travelling in a black pickup truck.

Red Deer RCMP would like anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have information on the second suspect to contact the RCMP Red Deer City Detachment at 403-406- 2300. MEN CHARGED AFTER BREAK AND ENTER The Blackfalds and Red Deer

by Erin Fawcett RCMP with the assistance of Police Dog Services and Air Services arrested three men as a result of this investigation. Also recovered during the investigation were two stolen vehicles, three shotguns as well as other stolen property.

The RCMP have charged Danny Bergeson, 26, of no fixed address with possession of stolen property, break and enter and several firearms offences.

In addition, Billyjack Williams, 43, of Red Deer and Steven Jones, 36, of no fixed address have been charged with possession of stolen property and several firearms offences.

The investigation is ongoing and information relating to the possible shots fired has not been confirmed.

The above noted incident, required the RCMP to contain the area in efforts of locating the suspects, therefore, there was a significant police presence observed by residents in the area. These incidents are

MEN ARRESTED AFTER ARMED ROBBERY RCMP arrested two men shortly after they robbed a downtown lounge at gunpoint on Nov. 23rd.

At 11 p.m. on that evening, two masked men carrying long barrel firearms entered the Bell Fever Lounge at 4620 50th St., demanding cash. They departed in a black truck, heading southbound on Gaetz Avenue.

No one was injured during the robbery.

Police located the suspect truck at 2:30 a.m. on Nov. 24th as it drove northbound on 30th Ave. and confirmed that it had been stolen out of Calgary the night before the robbery. RCMP initiated a traffic stop as the vehicle turned onto Ellenwood Drive and arrested the driver and a passenger without incident.

Devyn Michael Hendrikson, 19, of Red Deer has been charged with robbery with firearm, use of a firearm while committing offence, two counts of pointing a firearm, disguise with intent, possession of prohibited firearm, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000.

Danny Ivan Bergeson, 26, of Red Deer has been charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000.

MAN CHARGED WITH IMPAIRED DRIVING Red Deer RCMP arrested a man Nov. 21st after he refused to stop his vehicle for police and then collided with another vehicle.

Red Deer traffic members observed a Jeep Grand Cherokee driving erratically shortly after midnight on Nov. 21st, heading northbound over the Taylor Drive bridge then north on Kerry Wood Drive. When members attempted a traffic stop, the jeep drove away at excessive speeds. Due to public safety concerns, the RCMP did not pursue the jeep. Police soon located the jeep again at the intersection of 60th St. and Kerry Wood Drive, where it had just collided with a Honda Civic, causing extensive damage.

Both drivers were shaken up but didn’t sustain significant injuries.

Winston Julius Logan, 47, of Red Deer has been charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired, operating a motor vehicle with over 80mgs of alcohol, dangerous operation of motor vehicle, flight from a police officer and failing to comply with undertaking.

SUSPECT SOUGHT AFTER WOMAN STABBED Red Deer RCMP are looking for the man who robbed a woman as she was leaving work Nov. 25th, then stabbed her in the chest.

At 9:45 p.m. on Nov. 25th, the woman was approached by a man in the area of 34th St. and 50th Ave.; the suspect wielded a large kitchen knife and demanded her purse, stabbing her on the left side of her chest before fleeing on foot with her purse. The victim called 911 and drove herself to the hospital, where she is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

RCMP searched the area with help from Police Dog Services but were not able to locate the suspect. RCMP continue to investigate and are asking for public assistance to locate

the suspect in this robbery and assault.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, about 6’ tall and was wearing a black balaclava ski mask, large black winter coat and no gloves.

POLICE ASK FOR PUBLIC ASSISTANCE On June 8th shortly after 11 p.m. Blackfalds RCMP received a complaint of an armed robbery at the Hideout in Gasoline Alley. A male suspect wearing a mask entered the premise through an employee entrance and while in the process of stealing a sum of money from the business, sprayed two employees with bear mace.

MAN CHARGED AFTER THEFT INVOLVING CHILDREN Red Deer RCMP have charged Logan Myles Gregory, 28, for an incident on Nov. 12th where the suspect stole a running truck that had two sleeping children in the back, then left the children on a street in the Clearview Ridge neighbourhood, and for an incident on Nov. 18th where the suspect was located in another person’s vehicle.

Gregory has been charged with theft over $5,000, two counts of failing to comply with recognizance, two counts of child abandonment, mischief over $5,000 and resisting/obstructing a peace officer.

Seasonal spirit at the annual Festival of Trees

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS The Christmas season is here as many Central Albertans enjoyed the annual Festival of Trees which ran at Westerner Park this past weekend.

In its 22nd year, the Festival of Trees has raised $11.8 million for the Red Deer Regional Hospital. This year, funds raised will go towards enhancing client care and services in the Medical Specialty Clinics which provides a multidisciplinary approach to care for clients in Central Alberta living with multiple sclerosis, Hepatitis C, heart failure and anticoagulation therapies as well as specialized geriatric services and stroke prevention complex medical conditions.

Young and old were able to enjoy the festivities at this year’s event with a variety of activities geared to children and many activities for adults alike. The stage at the Festival of Trees was a hot spot throughout the weekend as numerous groups performed from the Red Deer Royals, to highland dancers and various singers as well.

Of course a highlight of the event are the dozens of beautifully decorated and unique trees which were up for bid for some lucky attendees to take home. A number of events also brought Central Albertans out and invited them to get into the holiday spirit, from the ‘Tis the Season Luncheon to Mistle Toe Magic and of course the family-friendly Breakfast with Santa. There was much for everyone to enjoy.

Farmers protest Bill 6 in Red Deer

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS Farmers and ranchers from all over Central Alberta gathered at Westerner Park Tuesday to protest the Alberta Government’s proposed Bill 6.

About 200 people turned up to the protest ahead of the meeting which was slated to take place Tuesday afternoon.

“This jeopardizes our way of life. It jeopardizes how we do business and it jeopardizes the viability of our farm. This is important. If we’re in a position where we’re threatened to lose 100 years or more of family work, emotions are running high,” said Naomi Mckinney, who lives on a family farm just outside of Ponoka.

According to the province, Bill 6, the Enhanced Protection for Farm and Ranch Workers Act, will allow every worker in Alberta the right to a safe, healthy and fair workplace. Currently, Alberta offers less protection for farm and ranch workers than any other jurisdiction in Canada.

If Bill 6 is approved by the legislature, two changes will happen on Jan. 1st.

These changes include that WCB coverage will be mandatory and farms and ranches will no longer be exempt from Occupational, Health and Safety laws.

Changes to employment standards and labour relations laws will follow, likely being made next spring.

As a start, Bill 6 will remove exemptions from existing workplace rules. Then, existing regulations and codes will be amended in consultation with farmers, larger scale producers, industry associ-

ations and the public, according to the province.

“Oil companies can afford that. Farmers can’t,” said Merle Anderson, who’s from Carbon.

Anderson added that the costs could become too high for most farmers to bear.

“There are liabilities that we face in industries other than farming that are going to get applied to us and farming is not one that can pass on that cost,” he said.

Lori Sigurdson, minister of jobs, skills, training and labour said she has been listening to Albertans regarding Bill 6.

“I want to assure those families that Bill 6 does nothing more than bring Alberta’s safety standards on farm and ranching operations in line with every other province in Canada,” she said. “Family farms have thrived in those provinces, and they will continue to do so in Alberta.

“The concerns I’m hearing about most relate to what the legislation means for family, friends and neighbours who pitch in on the farm. I can assure you that farm kids will continue to make their communities proud in their local 4-H program, just as they do in every other province.

“Neighbours and relatives will continue to help each other out in times of need, just as they do in every other province.

These customary parts of farm life will go on as before, while enhancing protections for employees.”

“If people want ribbons, we can supply them. This year there is no other option than to phone the MADD office or email us because we just do not have the volunteers to campaign like we used to,” said local chapter CoPresident Peggy Gougeon.

“Because this particular campaign has been going on for so long, people recognize it more than they do almost anything else we do. We have our candle light vigil and things like that but I think more people understand what the ribbons are for.”

Canada’s Project Red Ribbon begins Nov. 1st and runs through until Jan. 5th.

Citizens are asked to wear a red ribbon in support of sober driving through the holiday season. MADD has encouraged supporters

to share images of themselves on social media to spread the awareness and use the hash tag #maddredribbon.

Donations are a part of the campaign and are used, according to the MADD Canada website, to support campaigns and programs year round that include victim support, awareness presentations and youth programs.

“I think accidents seem to go in spurts. It seems to me that we don’t hear of any and then all of sudden there are two or three in a row. I still think we need more awareness out there and stricter laws because Alberta is a lot more lax than some other places,” said Gougeon.

“We’re getting better than we were. There are check stops where officers haven’t picked up anyone so I do think our message

According to the MADD Canada web site, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 16- to 25-year-old people with alcohol and/or drugs being a factor in 55% of those fatal accidents.

Alberta laws regarding drinking and driving have changed in recent years.

“There is no reason to drink and drive. It comes down to a person making a choice to get into their car after they’ve been drinking. You just got to think if it is worth the cost.

I’d just like to remind people to think about drinking and driving, to drive safely and to always plan ahead.

That is the biggest thing,” said Gougeon.

Alternatives to driving under the influence include calling a taxi, designating a driver, calling a friend or family member or calling a designated driving service.

Those services are businesses such as, in Red Deer, Driver Take Home, where a person will transport the intoxicated person and their vehicle safely home. Other designated driving business-

es locally include Flippers Designated Drivers and Sober Shadows.

The importance of the annual Red Ribbon Campaign around Christmas time is that there are more festivals, concerts, family get-togethers and parties that go on this time of year.

Poor visibility and road conditions in winter can also contribute to fatal accidents.

“There are a lot more parties, a lot more drinking and a lot higher chance of this happening during this season. People drink throughout the year but we really push this message around Christmas.”

The local chapter has been around since 1993.

In recent years, Gougeon added MADD has suffered from a lack of volunteers and that has caused some stress.

“If we had the volunteers, we could do check stops with RCMP officers like we used to do all the time. Because we are lacking the volunteer base, we can’t. It’s kind of hard to get back to people who contact us because we all work full-time, but we put a lot into this, and don’t want to lose it. Youngsters raise funds for the Red Deer SPCA

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS Kindergarten students at First Steps & Beyond Inc. worked hard to create a fundraiser for the Red Deer and District SPCA last week.

The children baked cookies, served hot chocolate and collected money for the local SPCA to help teach the children the importance of giving to others.

Teacher Tamara Stasyk said it can be a hard concept to teach children, but the students were getting the idea. “We’re really trying to incorporate the community, leadership, citizenship and responsibility into their learning,” she said.

“The kids are getting it slowly.

We’re going to do some more fundraising and take some stuff to the Christmas Bureau as well, and also to the food bank. We’re trying to teach them about all of the things that less fortunate people need at this time of the year. We get so wrapped up in the commercial aspect of Christmas, so we’re trying to teach them that it’s not all about presents and getting more than other people.”

Stasyk explained that as part of the enhanced Kindergarten program at First Steps & Beyond, part of the curriculum is getting the kids involved in community.

She said the kids gain a lot from

these types of activities.

She said the children were given the option of how they could help the community and landed with a bake sale.

“We’re doing an enhanced Kindergarten program, so we try to incorporate all aspects of the community and this is a leadership program for them. They chose to raise money for the SPCA. In doing that, they decided a lemonade stand would be too cold, so they decided to do hot chocolate and cookies. We actually baked the cookies in class in a turkey roaster oven, six at a time - it was a long week of baking,” she laughed.

The children worked hard to bake and had fun participating in the fundraiser.

“We raised money for SPCA so we can buy leashes and collars for the animals and dogs.

Sometimes the animals need those things so animals don’t run away,” he said. “We made monster cookies. We crumbled them into balls and baked them.

The best part was testing them.”

The kids will be heading down to the SPCA in December to hand over all of the profits from the fundraiser.

The changing face of shopping in the City’s history Another Christmas shopping season is now upon us.

Television, radio, newspapers, and the Internet are full of advertisements for ‘great gift ideas’ and holiday shopping opportunities.

For many merchants, the upcoming weeks will be the difference between a profitable year and a discouraging one.

Shopping for Christmas gifts and treats has been major part of community life since Red Deer’s earliest years. The small pioneer stores in the town would put special displays and Christmas sales signs in their windows.

One of the biggest changes in retail came in 1928 when the Timothy Eaton Company bought out W.E. Lord’s business and established Red Deer’s first chain department store. One could find a wide range of goods on offer. Moreover, all of the foods for Christmas feasts could be purchased in the groceteria.

For those unable to find what they wanted in the store, there was an excellent catalogue office where items could be shipped in from the central warehouse in Winnipeg. If the customer

Eaton’s helped to secure Red Deer’s place as the retail hub for Central Alberta.

During the 1930s, it also started the tradition of bringing in Santa Claus to gather gift ideas and help with sales. In 1939, Eaton’s was doing so well that a large new store replaced the old one on Gaetz Avenue.

Red Deer began to grow very rapidly after the Second World War. New chain stores such as Woolworth’s, Kresge’s, Macleod’s, Saan, Merit and Metropolitan opened in the downtown area.

In the early 1960s, one of Red Deer’s first shopping malls, the Plaza, opened on the east end of Ross Street.

The Co-op served as the anchor tenant.

In 1961, the Hudson’s Bay Company opened a large

three-level outlet on the corner of 49 St. and 49 Ave. This latter store had the added attraction of being home to Red Deer’s first escalator.

In November 1970, Red Deer’s first indoor shopping mall, the Parkland Mall, opened on the brow of the North Hill. This complex initially contained more than 40 indoor stores and services. Woolco, Safeway and Super City Drugs were the first anchor tenants.

Another major attraction was the huge parking lot with spaces for more than 1,400 vehicles.

Parkland Mall was an enormous success. Despite the fact that Central Alberta was mired in a recession at the time, after the new mall opened, retail sales in the community leapt 10% for more than $100 million.

Red Deer’s position as the preeminent retail centre of Central Alberta became even stronger.

However, the opening of the indoor mall put pressure on Red Deer’s downtown. The challenges to the traditional retail centre became even greater when the Parkland Mall doubled in size in 1978.

In 1981, a new, even larger shopping centre, Bower Place, opened on the South Hill. The complex covered 430,000 sq. ft. and boasted more than 90 store and services. Another blow to the downtown came when Eaton’s decided to relocate to the Bower Mall, joining Woodward’s as an anchor tenant at the new shopping centre.

A large number of other major stores decided to either close their downtown Red Deer outlets, or else relocate to one of the malls.

However, the malls also faced challenges. In 1993, Woodward’s went bankrupt and its location at Bower Place was taken over by The Bay. In 1995, Zeller’s moved out of the old Eaton’s store downtown and moved into new premises at Bower Place.

Meanwhile, the whole retail sector in Red Deer faced major new competition when Walmart took over the old Woolco store in the Parkland Mall in 1994.

The retail business in Red Deer continues to change significantly. Stores such as Zellers and Target have closed. Sears has relocated from one mall to another.

New big box retailers and ‘shopping commons’ have been built, particularly on the south side of the City.

Nevertheless, all stores and services are hoping for a good 2015 Christmas season, particularly in face of the general decline in the Alberta economy.

CRIME STATISTICS RELEASED RCMP is on target with objectives set out earlier this year when it comes to organized crime, crimes against persons, safer youth and safe roads, according to the second quarter Annual Policing Plan (APP) update.

The second quarter of the APP runs from July 1st to Sept. 30th.

“Since the beginning of the first quarter, which started March 1st, we met or exceeded many of the objectives including identifying and disrupting criminal networks, significant decreases in collisions at high crash locations and an increase in impaired driving charges,” said RCMP Supt. Scott Tod. The APP was developed by RCMP in consultation with the City of Red Deer administration and council.

It is a component of council’s Safety Charter, which aims to enable and promote a safer community.

“Our progress continues not only because of the efforts by RCMP, but also citizen and community agency participation in crime prevention and acts of promoting a safe and healthy Red Deer,” said Tod. “In order to continue building a feeling of safety in our community, it is imperative that we all take a proactive approach in harm reduction.”

Along with the APP, the year to date crime statistics were released. The report features crime statistics from Jan. 1st to Sept.

30th, comparing the five-year trend from 2011-2015. In terms of crimes against persons and other criminal code offences, there was an overall decrease over the five years. Property crimes increased slightly annually, which may be related to the consistent increase in Red Deer’s population.

UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN NEARING FINISH Approaching the end of its 50th anniversary community campaign, United Way Central Alberta is cautious but optimistic that the campaign will bring in close to what was raised last year.

While most of the support comes from workplace campaigns, there is one event that adds a sizable contribution – the Scotch Classic.

“The Scotch Classic is made possible by our distributors and sponsors who share a passion for Scotch and want to encourage more people to develop a taste for it,” said Lars Rogers, chair of the organizing committee. The event ran Nov. 19th and raised $25,000.

The final tally for 2015 donations will be announced on Jan. 16th at the annual Touchdown event.

Over 4,600 toilets have been replaced for water conscious models since the City launched the toilet rebate program in 2008.

“We’re thrilled to see so many Red Deerians jump on board the toilet rebate program and make the switch,” said Matthew Chambers, environmental program specialist. “Through this program, Red Deerians have helped to save over 150,000,000 litres of water which is enough to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool 61 times.”

The City offers $25 rebates for homeowners who replace high flow toilets with low flow toilets (six litres or less) and $50 rebates for dual flush toilets by crediting the applicant’s utility account.

To qualify for a toilet rebate through the City, applicants must own residential property in Red Deer, have a current utility account and purchase a qualifying toilet.

Once the new toilet is installed, homeowners need to fill out the application form, attach the original receipt, and visit the City of Red Deer Waste Management Facility to recycle their old toilet and get a disposal verification stamp on their application form.

Toilets installed as part of new construction or during renovations that require a plumbing permit do not qualify for rebates.

Homeowners can apply for a maximum of two toilet rebates per household over the course of the program.

ENTERTAINMENT Country legend Mel Tillis includes City on current tour

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS One of country music’s most prolific and respected singer-songwriter’s, Mil Tillis will be on tour in Saskatchewan and Alberta this winter with a Red Deer stop slated for Dec. 19th.

Showtime is 7 p.m. at the Memorial Centre.

The concert will cover several of Tillis’ hits from over the years, with some Christmas tunes sprinkled in as well.

“I’ll also tell a few stories along the way,” he said during a recent interview. “And sometimes I go out in the audience with the people. And there’s request time, too.

If I can remember them, I’ll do them,” he says with a chuckle.

Tillis, whose name is synonymous with country music has penned over 1,000 songs in a career that has spanned six decades. With more than 60 albums to his credit, as many as 600 songs covered by other recording artists, and more than 30 Top 10 singles, Tillis can be counted amongst the great country music legends.

Detroit City, Ruby, Coca Cola Cowboy, Southern Rains, I Ain’t Never and I Believe in You are just a very few of the songs that make up Tillis’ immense catalogue of hits. Interspersed with seasonal favourites, Mel Tillis & The Statesider Band have put on one of the most in-demand concerts touring this winter. His latest CD, You Ain’t Gonna Believe This, was released in 2010.

Through it all, he’s had to deal with a stutter since childhood. But he’s never let it get in the way of anything that he’s wanted to do.

His stutter developed during his childhood. A few others in his family struggled with the same problem, so at first, he recalls not thinking too much of it. “I started school and I came home that first day, and asked my mom if I stuttered.

She said, ‘Yes you do, son’. I said, ‘Mama, they laughed at me’, and she said, ‘Son, if they are going to laugh at you give them something to laugh about’.

“So I went back to school - and that was my first day in show business,” he said, adding he learned about utilizing humour to engage others.

Meanwhile, music was also a part of the family. “My mother had eight sisters and one brother, and all of them could play some kind of instrument,” he explained.

“We’d have family reunions, and I always liked to hear them sing.

CLASSIC - Acclaimed country star Mel Tillis has enjoyed a long and successful career in country music. He brings his current tour to the photo submitted Memorial Centre on Dec. 19th.

“We were Baptists, and there was little Assembly of God Church - they put up a tent not to far from our place. We knew they’d have some good music, so we went up there with those banjos and all those instruments - I thought it was the grandest thing in the world.”

He also noticed at this time that when he sang, he didn’t stutter. “It hasn’t hurt me at all.”

Indeed. Tillis has enjoyed enormous success over the years. He started performing in the early ‘50’s with a group called The Westerners while serving as a baker in the United States Air Force, stationed in Okinawa.

In 1956, Webb Pierce recorded a song written by Tillis entitled I’m Tired and it launched his musical career.

After leaving the Air Force in 1955, Tillis returned to Florida where he worked a number of odd jobs, eventually finding employment with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in Tampa. He used his railroad pass to visit Nashville and eventually met and auditioned for Wesley Rose of famed Nashville publishing house Acuff-Rose

Music. “I’d go to Nashville and knock on doors.”

His songwriting ability was noted right away. So Tillis moved to Nashville and began writing songs full-time. He wrote I’m Tired, a number three country hit for Webb Pierce in 1957.

In the late 1950s, after becoming a hit-making songwriter, he signed his own contract with Columbia Records. In 1958, he had his first Top 40 hit, The Violet and a Rose followed by the Top 25 hit Sawmill.

In the mid-1960s, Tillis switched over to Kapp Records, and in 1965, he had his first Top 15 hit with Wine.

“I signed with a publishing company and they got me an audition with the A&R man from Columbia Records. I went up to his suite and auditioned, and there were lots of other acts up there,” he recalled. “I sang and they liked it. Don Long looked up and me and said, ‘Well Melvin - you’ve done good. How would you like to be on Columbia Records?’

“I really began to write songs then. And the next thing I knew I was on the Porter Wagner Show, the Glenn Campbell Good

Tillis has indeed enjoyed a storied career - he has been inducted into the Grand Ole Opry, the Country Music Hall of Fame, is a winner of the much-coveted Country Music Award for Entertainer of the Year and in 2012 received the National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama.

Tillis has also appeared in numerous feature films including Every Which Way But Loose with Clint Eastwood, W.W. & The Dixie Dancekings, Cannonball Run I and II, Smokey and the Bandit II with Burt Reynolds and the lead role with Roy Clark in Uphill All The Way. Eastwood called him after a show and told him he had a couple of songs for a movie he was working on called Every Which Way But Loose, and would Tillis consider being a part of the project?

Of course, the 20 or so songs woven into the show add an entirely new feel to the show, and thanks to the writing skills of the aforementioned Lindsay-Abaire and Tesoi, the addition works very well.

As to the story, there lives an ogre named Shrek (played by Brendan Hutchison). He’s kind of a miserable fellow - and no wonder. He’s never been told that he amounts to much, and ogres are known for their ugliness and relative nastiness, too. But Shrek’s world brightens when a loyal new friend, Donkey, comes bounding into his world with all his irrepressible positivity, energy and ‘glass half full’ perspective.

At first, it’s an unlikely friendship for and Shrek holds back but soon the two are buddies in a quest to rescue Princess Fiona - who holds a secret of her own and is journeying to marry Lord Farquaad (Alicia Maedel).

Bethany Monaghan stars as Fiona.

Rounding out the cast is an array of famous fairytale characters who are on a quest to find a place they belong as well. Some of the play’s most charming and flat-out fun moments are when the principal cast members are joined by this troupe, which includes such folks as Pinocchio (Ashley Mercia), the Three Blind Mice (Ashley Keenan, Tori Grebinski and Nicole Leal); the Mad Hatter (Eric Walters) and Humpty Dumpty (Emily Vaillant).

Essentially, one of story’s strongest, most prominent themes is that whole business of finding that elusive sense of belonging, of a place to fit in. And also becoming confident in who you are - regardless of how outsiders might see you or how other may label you. In the end, true love wins and indeed - everyone lives ‘happily ever after’.

Overall, the production is a charmer.

The set design (by the wonderful Carrie Hamilton) and costumes (designed by Donna Jopp) provide a perfect foundation for what unfolds. The orchestra is also superb, as is the choreography (guided by Jill Kuzina).

And far the vast majority of the show, the vocals shine through as well - not always an easy feat with RDC productions in the past where there is a limited amount of solid singers to draw from.

Happily the three principle actors can sing - particularly Donkey and Fiona.

So we as an audience are always pretty much clear about the plot development in those regards.

But more than that, these talented young actors really bring the story to life.

Kalisha Mendonsa/Red Deer Express As Shrek, Hutchison is solid in capturing the ogre’s stubborn and at first gruff sensibilities. Monaghan is terrific as Fiona as well - nailing the independent spirit and tenderness that this sweet character is certainly known for. But ultimately, it’s the Donkey who time and again steals the show - Shave is absolutely superb.

He’s hilarious to watch with his constant antics onstage, and audiences just can’t help but find his personality utterly irresistible. Who wouldn’t want a loyal pal like Donkey? Shave brings so much joy to the role that it’s utterly infectious; rarely have I seen an actor so committed to a role.

Overall, my only complaint would be it’s just a bit too long.

There were a couple of tunes, that, in my humble opinion, could have been sliced off without sacrificing the essence of the story. But it’s hard to complain much about a show that bursts with clever lines, a brisk plot line, great music (the highlights are too many to mention, but standouts include Story of My Life, Don’t Let Me Go, What’s Up Duloc, I Know It’s Today, Travel Song, Morning Person, Make a Move, Freak Flag and the insightfully-titled Beautiful Ain’t Always Pretty.) Time and again, the songs and the performances that express them are the real gems of the show.

There is also a real dedication to the development of each and every character.

This also speaks to the community of direction and instruction at RDC - Bradshaw has clearly brought out every bit of talent these young actors hold - there’s dancing, singing, loads of memorization and of course interpreting character. Vocal directors Sharon Braun and Val Sherman and vocal coach Danica Hoffart have also all done wonders with the vocal talents (again, there is varying quality here, but overall it’s well done).

As for the ‘live’ version, the original Broadway show opened around 2010.

Bradshaw had mentioned pre-show that the challenge for the actors was to find their characters in what has already been created. And to their credit, they’ve done that. The principles are certainly recognizable, but there’s a freshness and a newness to what they are offering as well.

“It’s still the same story, but it’s told a little differently,” Bradshaw had noted.

Indeed. But thanks to the creative pooling of exceptional and growing talent amongst RDC theatre students, it has all come together in a solid family outing this holiday season.

“Last week we had our initial run through and at that time, we give the kids some fine-tuning, polishing details. They take those details and practice with tips like using the full stage,

The show boasts participation of approximately 140 students out of a graduation class of nearly 320. Grad advisor and educator at the school Penny Crawford-Ritz, said the students, staff and parent volunteers have been working hard for nearly six weeks to prepare for the event.

“It’s a pretty spectacular event.

The planning and everything takes about six weeks, and the kids have had a really heavy involvement for the last month.

Once they get their store, and go in and get fitted for their clothes, the grads have to find their music and choreograph their number,” she said.

“The kids don’t just walk on the stage like a runway fashion show. They pick songs and themes and usually act out a story that goes with their music.

It’s awesome to see. These kids are just wonderful. It’s so nice to see them strutting their stuff and having fun and being the amazing young kids they are.”

The show will be taking place on Dec. 3rd at 7 p.m. All of the funds raised from the event go towards offsetting costs of graduation events such as the graduation gala, as well as costs for caps and other accessories for grads.

The event is the largest fundraiser for the grad ceremony and events. This year is a special one with the highest rate of participation the school has ever seen.

“Our grad class is about 320 people, so to have nearly half of them in our show is quite an event. We’ve got stores all the way from Value Village to Black Knight Tuxedos and bridal stores. There’s just a huge range of clothing and brands and style. The entertainment is

connecting to the audience, or ensuring they have a creative way of entering and leaving the stage,” Crawford-Ritz said.

“It gives all of the grads who are involved to see the other groups and it really picks up the momentum of the performances.” Parent volunteers also put in effort to make the event run smoothly. Parents have collected donations for raffle prizes,

assisted in setting up clothing rentals and prepare a meal for all 140 of the students for the evening of the event. CrawfordRitz said there has been weeks of planning that go into the event to make it a success.

“Students found out what store they would be modelling for about a month ago. It’s been kind of a whirlwind since then.

Before that, we host a couple of

different meetings for all interested grads and we have a parent meeting for those who have signed up to volunteer to help,” she explained.

She added she is looking forward to the extravagant event and that the students, parents and staff have worked very hard to bring together this amazing show. kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

Heart failure = 2.1 to five years of life “The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves.�

Shakespeare wrote this over 400 years ago. The immortal bard could easily be referring to the epidemic of congestive heart failure (CHF) in this country. So what does this disease mean to us, and our health care system?

To find out, I visited the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre (PMCC) at the University of Toronto. Dr. Michael McDonald, an expert on CHF, says, “Today, if you’re over the age of 65, heart failure is the most common reason for being admitted to hospital.�

It’s prudent to read his remark twice as this diagnosis means a life expectancy as low as 2.1 to 5 years!

McDonald says CHF can result from a variety of causes such as a birth defect, injured valves due to rheumatic fever, a blood infection that scars valves, hypertension and aging. But the most common cause is a previous heart attack that damages cardiac muscle and weakens the pumping action of the heart.

He adds that the early symptoms of heart failure are sometimes difficult to detect. In some patients there may be unexplained fatigue or a slight cough.

Later, shortness of breath and swelling of ankles. Or the diagnosis may become apparent when an X-ray of the lungs is taken for another reason and it shows an enlarged heart.

So what can be done to increase the length of life when the heart begins to fail? Dr. McDonald stresses that early diagnosis and treatment is essential. Injured muscle cannot be restored. But drugs that decrease the heart rate or take the stress off the failing heart decrease the work load of the heart’s muscle and help to lengthen life.

As well, it pays dividends to follow an exercise routine. The best one is walking, to keep the rest of the body in good shape.

But why is CHF and cardiovascular disease the number one cause of death today?

The blunt answer is our questionable lifestyle. Two big problems, the epidemics of obesity and Type 2 diabetes are guilty and they’re getting worse every year. It’s tragic that 95% of those

with Type 2 diabetes are obese.

Sixty-five years ago it was 5%.

Type 2 diabetes is notorious for triggering atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) which causes hypertension and additional strain on the heart’s muscle. It’s a prime example of the GiffordJones Law that one bad trouble leads to another and another.

Unfortunately, it requires draconian measures to correct this trend. But it won’t happen so individuals must fight obesity and Type 2 diabetes as their lives depends on it!

What’s the prognosis for the future? Along with treating patients with a variety of cardiovascular problems, the PMCC, a world class centre, is engaged in finding new ways to treat the

increasing number of patients with CHF. For instance, researchers are using stem cells to grow cardiac muscle to replace those destroyed by coronary attack.

They’re also considering ways to remove the heart, repair it, and then replace it in the body. But repairing or replacing hearts is pricy and demand will exceed supply. Besides, we cannot expect cardiologists and researchers to cure all our medical problems.

There is only one sound solution. Prevention has, and will always remain, better than cure.

This means people must learn to treat their heart with tender loving care. The heart is a machine that beats 2.5 billion times

by age 70 without a holiday, an amazing durability.

It’s been said that prudent people practice a sound lifestyle early in life, but fools attempt it only at the end. Abraham Lincoln once remarked that we have the two best doctors in our body, our left and right legs. The idea is to use them to keep the body well oiled, while counting calories to fight obesity. Then fewer people will suffer heart failure.

Red Deer Rebels continue to dominate this season

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS The Red Deer Rebels continue to be one of the Western Hockey League’s hottest teams this season.

After a strong start to the 2015-16 season, the Rebs sit atop the Eastern Conference standings thanks to a 19-8-0 record.

“From a coaching standpoint you’re never satisfied, yet you also have to be real about where you’re at and, you know, we’re sitting first in our division, first in our conference, and second overall in the league so you can’t be too hard on that,” said Head Coach Brent Sutter.

Red Deer flew out of the gates early on in the season, winning their first four games in a row, three at home and one on the road, before losing their first game of the season to the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The Rebs struggled to find consistency after that, going 2-3 in the next five games and winning just one of four road games during that span.

“I think to this point we’ve played a pretty solid game. I think earlier on we lacked some consistency in our game and playing to the level that we would like to be for a full game,” Sutter said.

Red Deer has been excellent at home, which has been one of their greatest strengths.

Now at the 27 game mark, the Rebs are 10-2 at the Centrium and have outscored visiting opponents 50-26.

And while they suffered a bit of a slow start on the road, going 1-4 in their first five out trips, the young team has recovered well, posting a 9-6 road record through the first 27 games of the season.

“I think in the last week to 10 days we’ve hit our stride with that,” Sutter said.

Perhaps the Rebels’ biggest strength so far, though, has been the depth of their offense.

While newcomers Ivan Nikolishin and Michael Spacek lead the team with 40 points and 29 points respectively, the Rebs have benefited from an even spread of scoring.

Thirteen Rebels have posted more than 10 total points on the season while four of them have already reached the 10-goal plateau.

“Part of it is growth of players. They’re a year older, a year more mature, a year more in the league,” he said, adding that the team’s focus is now primarily on the defensive end.

But I think there’s always areas to improve and we know as a team we can score enough goals. It’s doing the things right without the puck and playing the game the right way and making sure we don’t have to score four or five goals in order to win.”

Now, with just eight games to go before the Christmas break, and the World Juniors, Sutter said the focus remains on winning one game at a time.

“We’ve got a lot of divisional games coming up before Christmas and right after Christmas and they’re huge. We

have to make sure we’re taking care of business and that our focus is where it needs to be.”

The Rebels have a tough road ahead of them in the eight games before the break.

First up, they’re off to Lethbridge this weekend for a game against the Hurricanes on Saturday night before they’re back in Red Deer to welcome the Prince Albert Raiders on Sunday.

They get a couple of days off and then they’re right back at it with a 10 day stretch during which they play six games, all of which are divisional contests.

“We don’t want there to be a let down.

break and how we’re playing leading into the break.”

But the Rebels’ record, especially during the past couple weeks, has them in good position for that final push. And that bodes well for a team that will be competing in the Memorial Cup in just six months.

“It’s not something we talk about.

Obviously from an organizational standpoint, yes we’re hosting it and we know it’s going to be a tremendous event and a very high profile event,” Sutter said. “But from a hockey side of it we’re just focused on the process of getting better every day.

Freestyle ski underway for season Thoughts on NHL’s All-Star game

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS The Central Alberta Freestyle Ski Club is gearing up for the competition season.

With the opening of the Canyon Ski Hill last weekend, members of the Club’s competitive freestyle skiing program have already begun to hit the slopes in anticipation of another great season of competitions. “There’s a real upsurge with freestyle skiing, specifically because we’re going to have the 2019 Canadian Winter Games right here in Red Deer,� said Club President Greg Sikora.

The competitive members of the ski club, those aged 12-17 who have been competing for a while, actually work within the program for 10 months out of the year, taking part in dryland training, trampoline, yoga and weights to stay in top physical shape during the summer months while spending the winter out on the slopes. “The Freestyle Ski Club is basically structured in three different tiers,� Sikora said.

Sikora explained those three tiers consist of the ‘Jumps and Bumps’ program, which is intended for kids aged six to nine, the ‘Freestylerz’, a program for those who are transitioning from learning the basics to becoming competitive, and the ‘Freestyle’ program, which is the competitive level for those who are wanting to take their skiing to the next level.

While the on snow season has already begun for the athletes in the Freestyle program, Sikora said the other two programs are still open for anyone who might want to register. “We invite athletes in different stages of

their development to join the Club basically any time along that progression,� he said, adding that the club supports participants through every step of their training. “We have coaches, fully trained and paid coaches, throughout that whole profile.�

Although the Freestyle group has already started, he said, the Jumps and Bumps and Freestylerz programs don’t start until January, so registration is still open.

When it comes to the reasons to start freestyle skiing, Sikora said there are a variety of disciplines the sport offers. “Freestyle skiing can be comprised of many different venues,� he said, explaining participants can choose whether to compete in moguls, slope style, big air, or half pipe. “There’s all these different course designs and course structures,� he said, adding the events have grown in popularity because of exposure from the Olympics.

Disciplines like slope style are also a form of expression that many skiers prefer. “It’s a very attractive sport from a skiers’s point of view versus, say, a racers’ point of view where they’re running through gates.

There’s nothing wrong with that, absolutely, but it’s more of a free expression of skiing.�

And then there’s the family aspect of the sport.

According to Sikora, many parents get their kids involved in skiing because they can do it as a family. “(Skiing) affords the parents the opportunity to go to the mountains and ski with the kids,� he said.

Remember when the National Hockey League’s All-Star Game used to be fun? When it used to feature the best players from the Eastern and Western Conferences battling it out on a Saturday afternoon?

The NHL doesn’t.

The All-Star game in recent years has become somewhat of a sideshow.

The teams are picked in a sort of fantasy draft format like kids pick teams on a school yard. Goalies do interviews during play, there’s some sort of bizarre set piece every single whistle. It’s just a mess.

Basically the game itself has become little more than a pickup game of hockey played by the best players on earth, which sounds like a lot of fun and yet the game’s TV ratings have been plummeting in recent years.

The problem is that the players treat it like a pick up game. They simply do not care about the outcome, meaning they don’t put any effort in at all, making the game basically unwatchable.

But fear not, the NHL has a solution!

A couple of weeks ago, the League announced they would be replacing the traditional All-Star game with a three on three All-Star tournament.

So now, instead of the players just choosing teams like kids, which

CORMIER was kind of fun, they’ll be playing hockey like kids, which is somewhat less fun.

This is one of those decisions that just makes no sense to me.

The game’s ratings are falling because both the players and fans consider it to be too gimmicky. So what’s the solution?

Apparently doubling down and changing the rules of hockey completely.

I mean, I had my issues with the fantasy draft system. The fact the players are randomly mixed left me kind of puzzled as to who I should be cheering for.

But at least it was hockey.

For me, the All-Star game is supposed to be the best players going mono a mono in a real hockey game to see who is the best of the best.

It is not to watch Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, and Taylor Hall pretend to be enjoying themselves while playing 3-on-3.

For me, the NHL should have back-tracked. Bring back the old east-west games. The NBA and MLB

both have very successful All-Star weekends and both run on an inter-conference or inter-league format because it gives the players something to identify with.

And make the game mean something.

The winning league of the MLB’s All-Star game gets the prize of home field advantage during the World Series. That’s a big deal, so the best baseball players in the world put everything they have into the game. It’s fantastic to watch.

If the NHL did something like that, I can’t help but think the players would actually want to show up without the NHL having to threaten them with suspension if they don’t.

It’s an idea that’s been put forward time and again and the response is always the same. ‘It’s a contact sport and we don’t want to risk injuring the star players,’ the critics say.

Hockey is a contact sport. Always has been and, hopefully, always will be.

Take the risk, or put it in the rules that the All-Star game is non contact.

But something’s gotta give because if I see one more All-Star game end 17-12 because the goalies checked out five minutes in I think I might burst.

It is a breath of fresh air to be able to just decorate without worrying about housing value or resale considerations.

My current client is 11-years-old and has been gathering photos on line for her dream bedroom. Her mom and dad have agreed to re-design it for her and have made her vacate the room with the big reveal happening on Christmas Day. I think I will have to visit them on that day to see her reaction when her bedroom door is re-opened; it will be the first time I have been at a client’s house on Christmas Day. One of her requests was turning her

WYSE closet into a reading nook. There have been many pictures of this type of project floating around on social media lately and I think it’s a completely charming idea. Once I actually finalized the design I wanted and found a handy guy to build it, finding the fabric for a custom bench and cushions was the fun part. A design project often needs a launch pad and the bedding and bench fabric began to put the whole palette into place.

I have approached this project by looking ahead to this soon-to-be-teenage client and knowing that while she may not

have much need for storage right now, in a few years she will be missing that closet space. My solution was to purchase a large freestanding wardrobe which would serve as her closet in the future. My experience with my daughter and how her clothing collection exploded at about 14 years of age gave me the foresight to redesign this to her 11-year-old taste yet look forward at what she would probably need in the next few years.

The challenge with this age group is also the patterns and palette that they choose. Being a pre-teen and living on the cusp of teenage life can be a place of uncertainty. Little girly things are still loved, stuffed animals are still precious and pinks and purples are a huge part of what is currently in her room. Moving forward we are creating a fun yet sophisticated look in her room with teal and

navy which I think she is going to love.

I chose room darkening curtains for her and explained to her mom that in a few years she is going to start wanting to sleep in and her mom thought this was a fabulous idea.

Since Christmas Day is less than a month away I’d better get shopping to finish the accessorizing of this room! Creating a more grown up yet fun room for this little girl has been a wonderful experience and has taken me back in time to when I would create a new room for my daughter as she entered into different phases in her life. The creative whimsy combined with practical solutions for her life in this room have been truly inspiring to me and I’m so looking forward to Christmas Day! 1. Saving money has nothing to do with how much you earn. If it did then professional athletes would not declare bankruptcy and a fast food worker would have no hope of buying a home. Saving money is a habit like any other and as such can be learned and cultivated. If you make the savings an automatic monthly withdrawal then you will never be faced with an excruciating choice between those new shoes or to save. You will know that the savings have been taken care of so the money that’s left after the bills are paid is yours to do with what you will.

Working with a qualified financial planner is a great idea. These folks will help you set a plan for your short and long term goals 2. You have to have at least two things reporting on your credit bureau. Your credit bureau is your financial report card.

A prospective lender will use the information to determine if the applicant is a strong candidate for a mortgage. The keys to a strong credit score are this: • Do not exceed 75% of the available credit limit on your credit card but be sure to use it. Credit cards are not evil. They are a tool like any other and one you will need to book a trip or shop online.

• Make all of your payments on time.

• Cell phones report on your credit bu-

reau so make sure it gets paid.

• Even if you end up moving around, the onus is on you to pay those bills. Make sure the utility companies can find you for that last bill after a move. Consider e-statements as those will follow you.

• Don’t let too many companies pull your credit. It can be an indication of financial troubles whereby you are seeking out additional credit to help you pay for the bills you already have.

3. Consider your expenses carefully.

That amazing F150 truly is fantastic but is it worth having to rent instead of buy?

A large vehicle payment can put your affordability over what is allowable by mortgage lenders.

4. Once you have saved the down payment and established your credit then you are ready to look for that perfect home.

But before you get caught up in granite and hardwood and all those other pretty things I would suggest you ask yourself, do I really need all this? A starter home can be turned into a rental property in a few years very easily. Think long term and plan wisely.

5. What about a roommate? Think of your friends who were not fortunate enough to have read this article. While they are in the process of establishing their own credit why not have them move in with you as a mortgage helper or savings account booster?

And there you have it my friends. A way you can get the kids out of the house and into their own and actually well set up for life down the road.
