ALL FOR LESS THAN A PREMIUM PRICE! My husband and I decided to re-face our kitchen cabinets. We got a quote from a big box store and a cabinet re-facing company. Their price was out-to-lunch! A friend of mine referred me to Mike at Premium Cabinets. He came to our home, did the kitchen lay-out, helped us pick our colour and door style, crown moulding, and new handles. We also had them build us a pantry wall cabinet, and they also installed granite counter tops. We love our kitchen, and Mike! Pat & Bob, Kelowna

Yes, it is possible to stay healthy over the holidays! It’s the same every year: during all the seasonal festivities you’re so busy that you finish the holidays feeling exhausted and dispirited. Before deciding that you hate this time of year, why not consider a few tricks that can help you keep feeling energized and ready to return to routine in January.
FOUR TIPS FOR A MERRY HOLIDAY 1. Plan ahead instead of stressing out. If you’re hosting family or friends during the holidays, draw up a plan of action ahead of time. Decide what has to be done and use a calendar to schedule a few tasks that can be done in advance. Above all, avoid leaving everything until the last minute. Ask your family for help or hire a specialized cleaning or catering company if it’s too big a job to tackle. 2. Take proper care of yourself. Use the down time between parties to rest and get some exercise. Get out in the fresh air, skate, ski, go to the gym, or treat yourself to a massage. 3. Think about health and cold prevention. Not only does December mean more frequent parties and gatherings, but it’s flu season as well. Prevent
viruses from spreading by following these simple rules (that many people ignore): a. Wash your hands often with soap and hot water, especially after going to the toilet and before cooking. b. Cough into your arm, not into your hand. c. Stay at home if you’re sick. 4. Avoid overdoing it. Learn to decline some of the invitations that are being offered to you. Look at your agenda and calculate honestly whether you’re up to the event or not. Remind yourself that you have the right to say you’re tired and need to rest.
Washing hands frequently and thoroughly is one way of staying healthy during the holidays.

Shop locally for your Christmas gifts Everyone has experienced massive crowds of Christmas shoppers in the bigger shopping centres in large towns. How about avoiding the hordes of people this year by finding your Christmas gifts closer to home; it can save you time and money! You’re sure to find what you need at the gift stores, florists and shops that sell locally produced items found in all areas of the country. Save time First of all, most of us don’t have much time to do our Christmas shopping. Reducing travelling distances between your home and the stores can save you a lot of time. By staying in the area where you live, you can avoid traffic jams and the frustrating search for a parking spot. Help when you need it By patronizing local shops on a regular basis the sales people come to know you and are able to give a more personalized service, perhaps they can even help you find the perfect gift! For example, the sales clerk down at the cosmetic boutique will know the name of the perfume your wife or girlfriend tried recently; or the salesman at the motorcycle store will know the type of helmet your husband has wanted for a long time. Local products and relaxation One great idea is a gift basket with a selection of locally produced products. In addition to supporting your area merchants, purchasing this type of gift will also encourage local producers. Alternately, you could offer a gift certificate to a health spa or wellness retreat. Not only will this type of gift be beneficial to a loved one, but you’ll also discover great little places often hidden away somewhere close by!
Christmas shopping close to home boosts the local economy and saves you time!

Give yourself a well-deserved helping hand This year it’s your turn to entertain family and friends over the Christmas holidays, but the thought of all the work is stressing you out. No need to panic! To lighten the load, all you have to do is call on some professionals who specialize in event planning to help you organize a fabulous evening. IMPECCABLE CLEANLINESS It goes without saying that a home should be spotless when guests are expected. But you don’t need to spend days on end scrubbing, dusting, and tidying up every room in your home. A home cleaning service can help you tackle the big jobs and keep up with the basics as well. You can also rent from a party planning store all the tablecloths, centrepieces, cutlery, chair covers, decorations, and napkins that you need. MOUTH-WATERING FOOD You have absolutely no ideas about what food to serve? The solution is simple: a caterer. This professional will be able to suggest and prepare all sorts of delicious dishes that will have you all salivating. And to really impress your guests, why not treat yourself to the services of an in-home personal chef or to a pair of professional wait staff? AN ANIMATED EVENING If you are hosting an event in a larger venue outside your home, you can create a special atmosphere by booking the services of an MC or DJ. Another option is to hire a solo musician, a classical music quartet, or perhaps even a folk group. Similarly, renting a karaoke system is a great way to provide fun and entertainment for the evening. One thing is for sure: with the collaboration of these professionals, your guests will be talking about your evening for years to come! Whether it involves friends or family, or a few acquaintances or a group, entertaining is always a challenge. However, anyone can
master the art of receiving guests as long as words such as preparation and organization are part of their vocabulary. Here is a short guide to help you become more comfortable using those two tricky words. Chapter 1 - THE WELCOME First impressions set the tone for the evening. Put every chance on your side by giving each and every guest a warm welcome, with plenty of individual attention that includes offers of drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Chapter 2 -THE ATMOSPHERE Turn your home into a place where it’s fun to be. Of course, this means spotless surroundings as well as an atmosphere that stimulates the senses with music, scents, flavours, décor, and cozy seating. And a fireplace is the absolute top way to create a very special holiday ambiance. Chapter 3 - THE MENU A new recipe should never be attempted the day of your party. Choose your favourite no-fail dishes or else practice making a new dish a couple of times before the event. The best and easiest solution of all: call a caterer for help with the entire meal or for some trays of fancy appetizers or delicate desserts. Don’t forget to find out about your guests’ allergies and food intolerances beforehand. Chapter 4 - THE MEAL Prepare a seating plan that will encourage conversation among your guests. Don’t hesitate to introduce topics of conversation here and there in order to avoid any awkward silences. Do remain attentive during the meal, but be sure to enjoy yourself as well. Chapter 5 - THE SERVICE Taking care of your guests means giving them an unforgettable evening. Ensure they have everything they need to eat and drink. You’ll be given your just reward; after all, it will be their turn to entertain you next year!

Now it’s our turn The Christmas holidays are filled with celebrations and time spent in good company. This is the moment to see faraway family members and renew ties with those we haven’t seen for months or maybe even years. This is also the time to think about those dear ones who cared for us in the past. For many of us, childhood meant spending time with the older generation. Our now-ageing mothers comforted us each time our hearts were broken and nursed us whenever we were ill.
the entertainment during Christmas and birthday parties, with their off-colour songs and clowning around. They made all those family get-togethers such festive, fun affairs! Now it’s our turn to think of all these people who loved us and who have now reached their golden years. The least we can do is give them some of the attention that they once gave us. Let’s be sure to think of them at Christmas time; let’s not leave them on their own.
Grandmothers welcomed us into their homes for short vacations and cozy visits. How nice it was to hear about the olden days and help with the household chores. Our grandfathers taught us the basics of fishing and were the source of all sorts of good stories and funny jokes. As for our aunts and uncles, they were often the ones who provided

Our fathers knew how to reassure us when we were afraid or in doubt. It was they who taught us how to ride our bikes without the training wheels and who advised us when the time came to buy our first car.
