As the holiday season approaches, the publics’ focus often turns to helping those in need.

However, the Mission Community Services Food Centre offers help 12 months a year.

The centre relies on volunteers to provide groceries to low income families in Mission. A large number of those volunteers are seniors.

Phil Hope, coordinator of the Food Centre and of the annual Christmas Bureau campaign said there are more than 200 volunteers lending a hand.

“Without volunteers, this wouldn’t happen,” said Hope, adding that more volunteers are always welcome, especially now.

The Christmas Bureau’s campaign has just started. Volunteers collect donations of food, money and new toys to create special holiday hampers.

Any donations to the Christmas Bureau that are left over are given to the food centre, so nothing is wasted.

Volunteers at the centre all agree on one thing, “it feels good” to help others.

Christine Goeghart has volunteered her time for the past 10 years “I heard they (food centre) needed help. They didn’t have as many volunteers back then, so I thought ok... I wanted to do something for the community, help out, and I wanted to be active a little bit,” said Goeghart.

She volunteers twice a week and wants to encourage other seniors to come out and lend a hand.

“It provides a purpose in life, you’re not sitting, doing nothing.

“We came always use more seniors.”

Molly Hawkins agrees. She has spent that past decade offering her time to help anyway she can.

Earlier this month, the happy couple celebrate their 76th wedding anniversary.

The couple came to B.C. in 1947 along with their three young daughters. They settled in Burns

Anne and Cornelius raised 8 children (one who is now deceased) and have 16 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

BLUE CHEESE & BACON DIP Ingredients: 7 bacon slices, chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened 1/3 cup half-and-half

4 ounces crumbled blue cheese 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives 3 tablespoons chopped walnuts, toasted Grape clusters Flatbread or assorted crackers

Preparation: Cook chopped bacon in a skillet over medium-high heat 10 minutes or until crisp. Drain bacon, and set aside. Add minced garlic to skillet, and sauté 1 minute.

Beat cream cheese at medium speed with an electric mixer until smooth. Add half-and-half, beating until combined. Stir in bacon, garlic, blue cheese, and chives. Spoon mixture evenly into 4 (1cup) individual baking dishes.

Bake at 350° for 15 minutes or until golden and bubbly. Sprinkle evenly with chopped walnuts, and serve with grape clusters and flatbread or assorted crackers.

Are you overwhelmed taking care of aging parents?

Today, seniors make up about 12 per cent of the Mission population, and Statistics Canada predicts this number will double by 2036.

An increase of seniors impacts many things including the healthcare system, the economy and our workforce.

In addition, this demographic shift is affecting adult children, also called “the sandwich generation,” who are balancing caregiving

responsibilities of aging parents while raising their own children and maintaining careers.

The Health Council of Canada noted that 57 per cent of family caregivers have other full time jobs and they are stretched beyond their capacity. Many report high levels of stress and have difficulties balancing responsibilities. Most often, those caregivers are the eldest daughter.

Few families are

aware that medical and non-medical care exists beyond the four walls of the hospital. It’s important for family caregivers to utilize available resources in the community, like private home care, to lessen the burdens of care. Unfortunately, it’s often not until there is a medical emergency that the topic of enhanced care is first discussed. It can be challenging to broach the topic of increased
