Decorated convoy rolls for Christmas causes Climate Hundreds of 4x4s traverse from Pitt Meadows to Stave Lake this Sunday.

AJ Anderson is helping organize this Sunday’s Lower Mainland 4x4 Toy Run and Food Drive. Trucks will gather at 10 a.m. at the Meadowtown Centre in Pitt Meadows, in the Real Canadian Superstore parking lot and travel to Stave Lake in the 11th annual event.

Big-wheeled trucks, and toys, are the theme of a local charity Christmas event revving up this Sunday.

Trucks involved in the 11th annual Lower Mainland 4x4 Toy Run and Food Drive will start pulling away from Meadowtown Centre between 11 and 11:30 a.m.

From the Pitt Meadows shopping centre, the convoy of decorated trucks will make their way to Stave Lake, with an estimated time of arrival of 12:30 p.m.

Starting at 10 a.m., drivers and supporters will meet at

the Real Canadian Superstore parking lot with decorated 4x4 trucks in various Christmas themes.

The convoy will then make its way east along Dewdney Trunk Road towards Stave Lake’s second beach.

Upon arrival, there will be an area set up for burgers, hotdogs, baked goods, pop, and chips, explained AJ Anderson, who along with Jaime Mantle is one of the key organizers of the drive.

Stickers are also available, and the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau will be on location to accept donations.

Organizers are accepting new unwrapped toys, clothes, non-perishable food, blankets, and cash donations or etransfer donations at toyrun4x4@ gmail.com.

Donations are also accepted at Meadowtown Centre and at Stave Lake during the event.

“We are very community orientated and understand that there are many families and children right here in our own backyards who need an extra hand,” said Anderson, who conveyed his appreciation to the many volunteers who make the drive a success.

“We’re merely trying to help those who deserve it most to have as warm of a Christmas as possible.”

Note that all items are given to the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau for distribution throughout B.C. They accept: • new and unwrapped sports, reading, and educational items; • new and unwrapped toys and games (all ages); • gift cards for all ages; • new baby items (diapers, formula); and • non-perishable food.

Stuffed toys are not accepted.

What started out years ago with the combined effort of a few 4x4 clubs, has grown substantially. Last year involved several drivers of 4x4s and Anderson figures there will be even more trucks this year.

A nice touch the last couple of years have been people lining up along Dewdney Trunk Road to watch the trucks roll past.

Sponsors include AJ’s Detailing, ARI Financial, DRW Off Road, Freybe Meats, and the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau.

“We can think it’s only happening in another community, but the reality is that it’s a problem in

Maple Ridge too,” said the church’s pastor, Tim Sheridan, who organized the screening.

Sheridan added he’s heard of girls in high school in Maple Ridge who have been targeted by sex industry recruiters.

A public show of support in the form of a gathering and a march is planned for this Sunday, Nov. 29 in Pitt Meadows at 1 p.m. in Spirit Square.

The event is part of a “globally organized event to show support for our leaders as they engage the world in negotiation for climate action,” said the event’s co-organizer, Peter Tam. It takes place the day before a global climate summit is scheduled to begin in Paris.

“One of the main ideas behind the march is building awareness that the climate summit is happening, and that people here in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are aware of it and support it,” he said.

The connection inmates have with the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Agricultural Association dates back three decades.

“They started out 30 years ago supplying the fair with their outside work crew,” said association manager Lorraine Bates, who wears many hats during the year, including as current co-chair of the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society.

At the recent B.C Association of Agricultural Fairs & Exhibitions convention, B.C. Corrections was awarded for its community contributions, receiving a plaque as the winner of the “Outstanding Community Partner” competition.

With the hamper, local inmates are instrumental in moving toys from the society’s storage location, doing heavy lifting, setting up the sorting areas and tearing down cardboard for recycling, preparing Santa’s area for the children, and in some cases, sorting toys.

“This project peels off layers off the inmates as they share their family stories and how it feels sad to be in jail away from their children, but how helping makes them feel a bit better knowing that they are contributing to putting smiles on kids faces on Christmas morning,” said Bates, speaking about the work the inmates do.

“They are very happy to help, especially with the hamper,” she said. “I think, maybe, their families may have been recipients when they were younger.”

She said people are on edge when they see the red garb worn by inmates for identification purposes, and in some cases, won’t get out of their car at the fairgrounds.

“I have the same spiel,” Bates said. “I tell them, ‘You don’t need to worry about these guys, they’re dressed in red so you know they’re inmates, they’re in jail, they’ve done

their time: you need to worry about your next-door neighbour, or the guy living down the road.’”

Fraser Regional Correctional Centre deputy warden Cary McMahon said inmates working at such places as the fairgrounds and the North Fraser Therapeutic Riding Association, and who help run Allco Fish Hatchery, have no history of violence or escape, are well screened, and are classified to be suitable to be in the community.

McMahon said a letter received from an inmate illustrated how much their meaningful work meant for the inmate and others in his situation.

“A lot of them never experienced Christmases as youngsters,” McMahon said.

“They really enjoy giving back because they’re not sharing that with their families or have never really experienced that.”

Fiona Lenfesty volunteers every year to ring bells and collect donations for the Salvation Army’s Caring Place.

And the Pitt Meadows woman was one of the first in line to help the Caring Place with this year’s kettle campaign.

The Christmas kettle campaign kicked off Friday, and the effort will continue through until Christmas Eve with more locations being added as the number of volunteers increase and Christmas nears, said volunteer kettle coordinator Sharon Scramstad.

Kids need true stewards

B

ritish Columbia is above average in may ways – more natural beauty per square kilometre, higher rainfall, more Starbucks than average.

One way in which we also exceed the national average is less laudable. B.C. has a higher rate of child poverty than it should. One in five B.C. kids is being raised in poverty, a rate that went up decades ago and has barely budged since then. Right now it’s more than 20.4 per cent and represents 167,800 children across the province, from the Alberta border to Vancouver Island.

The annual Child Poverty Report Card, just released this week, again shows little change.

We know many of the risk factors of child poverty. A huge number of the kids living in poverty come from single parent families. Their parents either work, but don’t make enough, or they can’t find work and afford child care, or they simply can’t work.

The recommendations to bring that number down are ones that have been made many, many times before, and not just to deal with child poverty, but to help the working poor in general. Raising minimum wages would put more money in the pockets of many service industry workers, including a lot of moms and dads, single and otherwise.

Implementing a $10 a day childcare system would allow many people to either find a job or to expand the number of hours they work, benefiting both the family and the overall economy. And raising welfare rates – which barely allow survival given the extraordinarily high cost of housing – would help keep those who can’t work from total disaster.

Unfortunately, anyone expecting swift action from the provincial Liberal government is likely to be disappointed.

They’ve received a similar report card every year for more than a decade. Sometimes the poverty rate declines a bit, and our politicians take credit for it. Sometimes it goes up, and then it is of course sad, but no doubt the fault of the global economy, over which they have no control. And as for spending money on the problem? Well, kids don’t get a vote, do they?

• Rabid nationalism. Patriotism pushed to its xenophobic extreme, fascists always think their country/ethnic group is the greatest! And therefore deserves a slice of land of that country next door…

• Contempt for politics. Fascists think democratic governance is worthless, that elected officials are scum, and that people who have violently forced their way into the job are clearly much better suited for the task. Sure, that sounds like it will always end well.

• Rebirth. Combining the contempt for politics and the nationalism, fascists usually think their country needs a thorough cleaning out. The nation is weak, and it must be strengthened!

• Manliness. Fascism is not just about action, it’s about virility and toughness.

Everything is big and mighty and covered with lightning bolts and skulls and the kind of stuff 13-year-old boys doodle in the margins of their textbooks. There’s not a lot of room for women in fascism

except as wombs on legs. (Yes, there were women who supported fascism.

There are also women who write fan letters to jailed serial killers.)

• An army of their own. Fascists didn’t wait to seize power to get an army, they started their own militias. Then they brawled and/or beat up Communists, labour organizers, ethnic minorities, or anyone else they didn’t like.

The scary thing about fascism is that it builds on common beliefs. Everyone gets irked at elected governments, and lots of people harbour resentment of other countries or ethnicities.

That’s why some of the current Republican presidential candidates are alarming. They aren’t fascist, not yet. But several of them seem determined to see how many boxes they can check off on the list. By my count, several of them are up to four on my list of six. When they start organizing party militias, that’s time to break out the F-word.

Letters Trucks pounding Maple Ridge roads Dear Editor, I was wondering what book of wisdom our learned council members consulted before deciding to put an industrial area in north 256th Street.

Every day, gravel trucks, cement trucks, lumber trucks, wrecking trucks, prison trucks, fire trucks, pallet trucks, police cruisers, and ambulances are pounding our roads to pieces and devaluing our property prices from here to town.

These vehicles have to make their way from the far northeast to the far southwest of our

district where our highways are, to go through our town and school zones daily.

Is this the definition of bad planning?

There is now a new rezoning proposal to allow hydrocarbon processing, together with some PCBS, to take place in the same area with tanker trucks to add to this parade.

Do we really want PCBS moving through our district?

Would the town be liable in any way?

We have lived in this area for more than 40 years and

peace and quiet for us and other homeowners has been seriously eroded. Our council members should do the right thing and turn down this new rezoning and further industrial development in this area.

Adding to this problem will not make it better.

If other residents feel the same about this, I urge them not to wait for a public hearing but to write to their council members and newspapers now.

Bring back our peace.

ISIS threat shouldn’t be taken lightly Dear Editor, Matthew Claxton’s observation of ISIS is correct as far as their vicious acts are concerned [Painful Truth: Terrorism’s cruel worthlessness, Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows TIMES online], but they are certainly not as President Obama asserts just “a JV team.”

Nor are they “a bunch of angry schmucks with AK-47s, pickup trucks and a major grudge against anyone having fun.”

ISIS now controls the Northern half of Syria and the Northern half of Iraq.

Brussels – a large European city, the head of the EU and NATO – is shut down and other nations have shut their borders.

Matthew writes on a “historic scale [the attack] is pathetic” and so it is, as yet.

He mentions the different scale of numbers during the Second World War. Hitler began as a low level

German soldier.

His rise to power originated speaking in beer halls.

My point is he was given lots of time to eventually perpetrate the largest genocide in history from humble beginnings.

Hitler’s ambitions failed due to a coalition of countries that militarily destroyed them.

The world should not dither until ISIS attacks compare to a “historic scale.”

Our goals are to provide a memorable Christmas Day for financially disadvantaged families in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

We operate for two months a year and operate with 100 per cent volunteers.

A very important fact to know is we do not – at any time – do residential door-to-door or telephone soliciting.

In 2014 we registered and assisted 574 families in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

With the troubled economy we are expecting the same or more this year.

We’ll be able to achieve our goals, in large part, thanks to the kindness and generosity of local residents, businesses, and organizations.

Ruimy settling into new role The new MP was recently sworn in, and is now securing local office space.

A little more than a month after being elected Liberal MP for Pitt Meadows- Maple Ridge, Dan Ruimy is taking his new role in stride.

Ruimy was part of the recent swearing-in ceremony in Ottawa, and is heading back to the nation’s capital today, “to try and finalize staffers over there” for his Ottawa office, among other plans.

It’s another step in getting everything set up, during a period of time which right now, Ruimy said, “involves a lot of administration stuff, and getting the bits and pieces together,” which he said comes as no surprise.

“I did my research before all this, and had a pretty good idea going in,” he said. “I mean you’re dealing with a huge bureaucracy, right? It can’t be the Dan show saying ‘I want this and I want it now.’”

One large piece in this process is the hunt for, and set-up of, a local constituency office.

things like getting the lease done and making sure that we can actually secure it,” he explained.

“Basically, we get two offices,” he furthered. “We have an office here, and then one on the Hill, which is supplied by the House of Commons and we hire the staff there.”

Ruimy recalled the swearing-in ceremony, describing it as a procedure steeped in history.

“It’s nice to be a part of that history,” he furthered. “You feel it when you’re actually in parliament: You’re in that block, you’re in that room, everything is set up, and everyone’s dressed up.”

The formality of it all wasn’t intimidating, though, he added.

“They don’t make you feel that way, and everyone there extends their hand to welcome you.”

He laughed that he’s still getting used to people calling him “Mr. Ruimy.”

As for a timeline on when a local constituency office will open in here at home, Ruimy said that if all goes according to plan, “one would probably open in January.”

In the meantime, Ruimy said, he’s looking forward to when parliament is in session on Dec. 3, and “seeing where we go from there.”

There’s few other people in the country who have championed the Sunshine Foundation’s cause more than Maple Ridge’s own Daryl Stone.

And last week, his efforts to help make dreams possible for Canadian kids living with severe disabilities and life-threatening illnesses were lauded.

Stone was invited to the Sunshine Foundation of Canada offices in London, Ont. for the organization’s annual general meeting.

That’s where he was presented with a coveted award for all that he does.

This accolade, called the Wayne C. Dunn Spirit of Service Award, is given to individuals who have contributed to the mission fo the foundation through “extraordinatry personal ser-

vice” over a period of time.

Stone fits that bill.

The retired RCMP staff sergeant has given in many different capacities during the past 25 years plus.

“Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a child’s dream come true,” Stone said. “Their eyes light up the entire room with their smile. It doesn’t get much better than that.”

he countdown to Christmas is on at Albion Fairgrounds.

The fairgrounds is headquarters of the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper, where co-chairs Tom Cameron and Lorraine Bates, along with their merry band of helpers, are in full swing in their efforts to make Christmas brighter for those in need.

Families started registering with the hamper on Nov. 22, and the need has grown over the past few years.

Bates said in a perfect world, there wouldn’t be anyone to help because that would mean no one in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are struggling.

Realistically, Christmas would be a bleak time for many low income families if it wasn’t for the hamper volunteers and their efforts.

Roughly 600 families benefited from the hamper last year.

“We don’t know from one year to the next [how many people the hamper will help], but the phones are ringing off the hook,” Bates said.

She noted that the biggest need is donations of gifts suitable for teenagers.

“People want to buy a toy or a gift for somebody who still believes in Santa,” Bates said. “And so we get a lot gifts for

that age group and very little for teens.”

Bates said this kind of donation helps moms and dads be able to give gifts to everyone in the family, and not just little ones.

Gifts suitable for teens include gift cards, pajamas, socks, hoodies, sports jerseys, makeup, curling irons and sports equipment.

Donations can be dropped off at the hamper headquarters at Albion Fairgrounds, or at the Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows TIMES, Pitt Meadows Co-op, Winners location at Meadowtown Centre, and at boxes set up at Haney Place and Valley Fair malls.

Bates said the generosity of the community ramps up closer to Christmas but because of the number of families requiring help, earlier donations are appreciated.

Luckily for the society, generosity spilled over from last year, where there was a surplus of gifts, stored for a year, that can be handed out to families this Christmas.

Toys delivered on Nov. 19 came from the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau.

There is no price limit, or minimum donation, for those who contribute to the society.

“People can only give what they give,” Bates said.

As well, kids can come in and shop for their parents.

“Everybody has in their closet a box of stuff that somebody has given them, and they never use it, and it’s just sit-

ting there,” Bates said. “So re-purpose it, and give it to us, so that way the kids can have a gift for their parents.”

New this year are roughly 90 bicycles for riders of all ages that are available for the hamper families.

“We had 40 bikes in our lockup from last year that we got after [Christmas],” Bates said. “So when the families come in to register we’re going to ask them [if they want a bike]. Names will get pulled out of a hat, [and] they’ll get phoned.”

For those who can’t afford to donate new items this year, Rudolph’s Gift Shoppe is a popular feature.

The second hand gift shop has been operated by the society for 14 years and is a section that the registered families really look forward to, Bates noted.

On Dec. 5, 12, and 19, the families will be given a free shopping spree.

In 2014 the 546 registered families had access to clothing housewares and toys for themselves and their children.

Some families were waiting in line for three hours before the doors opened for them.

“There’s a real need for that,” Bates said. “If you have no money, even a thrift store is expensive.”

Donations of gently used items are needed and can be dropped off at the hamper office at the Albion Fairgrounds between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, seven days a week leading up to Christmas Eve.

mid the holiday cheer, Christmas can be an extremely difficult time for people who are grieving their lost loved ones.

Ridge Meadows Hospice Society is helping bereaved individuals find comfort with a candle-lit evening that provides special recognition of their loss.

A Time to Remember is an annual gathering that is held on the first Wednesday of December. This year, it takes place on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. at St. George’s Anglican Church.

“Christmas is always a hard time of the year. It brings back memories for those who are grieving,” said Susanne Lamb, the hospice’s bereavement coordinator. “They wonder how they will get through Christmas.”

In past years, the church has been full for the event.

Every family, said Lamb, has traditions or rituals, and it can be particularly painful trying to figure out what to do during the holiday season after a loved one dies. Some people try to avoid thinking about the traditions because the memories are too upsetting, she added.

The non-denominational evening, which is free of charge, will include an opening and closing prayer, songs by the Maple Ridge Choral Society, recitals of poems, and coffee and tea.

“We try to make it inclusive and comfortable for everyone during this difficult time,” said Lamb.

The evening will also include a PowerPoint presentation of photos to honour those who have passed, and a candle lighting in remembrance.

n Nov. 1 of each year, Perry Balascak pulls scores of boxes containing thousands of Christmas lights from his crawlspace.

Each string is rolled up individually, then meticulously placed into a Rubbermaid container and carefully labelled before being put into storage.

“He’s very organized,” said Perry’s wife, Paula.

With lights covering much of their Maple Ridge house and yard, Perry has to be methodical in putting up and taking down his countless LED lights.

He prepares for the holiday season by checking every bulb to ensure none have burnt out during the past year.

Beginning this coming Tuesday, the twinkling lights will brighten up their cul-desac, the display accented by 20 handmade wooden structures – including Santa, elves, candy canes, and polar bears.

Once the display goes live, passersby often stop to admire the exhibit. And for those who appreciate Perry’s efforts, he asked that they consider making a donation to Friends in Need Food Bank Society.

“I made a deal with my son that every year we will add more,” said Perry, who is a lighting specialist by trade.

He has sat on the board of St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation’s Lights of Hope for 11 years, where he can lend his lighting expertise and give thanks to the medical professionals for their help assisting him manage his Type 1 diabetes.

The Balascak family has been decorating their Maple Ridge rancher since 2000, when their son Tyler was born.

In 2001, however, they faced a devastating setback when their display was vandalized in the middle of the night.

“I was going to stop, but I thought ‘no, I will keep going’,” said Perry, determined to create the annual winter wonderland for his son as he grew up.

“Anyone can slap up some lights, but ours aren’t tacky.

You can see the effort we put into ours,” he said.

Tyler is now 15 and the light display is still going strong.

The most common question Perry gets asked is how many lights are on his house.

He doesn’t have the answer, but typically replies that there are “thousands and thousands” of lights in three different sizes.

He added 600 new lights this year.

Paula is proud of her husband’s dedication to putting up the lights, despite being slowed down by complications that come along with his diabetes.

“Each year, I lose my husband for a month. I give him up to the lights,” she said with a laugh.

Paula also does her part by designing and painting each wooden structure.

This year, the family hopes passersby will donate a bit of money to those less fortunate who won’t have enough food this winter.

“We have seniors drive by in a bus every year to take photos, and we have other people stop by and get out of their cars,” said Paula. “But a lot of people still don’t know about us because we’re in a cul-de-sac.”

The light display, located at 23025-125A Ave., brings Christmas cheer to Maple Ridge starting on Dec. 1.

Business Planning & Budget for 2016.

Each fall the City prepares business plans and budgets for the following year. Public presentation on these plans will be held at City Hall on Wednesday, December 9 and Thursday, December 10. Meetings are open to the public and will be conducted in Council in Committee format with a question and comment period provided at the end of meeting. Business Plans will be available online at pittmeadows.bc.ca and Visit pittmeadows. bc.ca and email comments through the webpage.

On October 27, 2015, the City’s Director of Finance & Facilities provided a presentation to Council and residents on the 2015 Financial Plan. Key points regarding the issues and drivers behind the City’s 2016 budget were discussed.

Presentation slides and issues can be found on the City’s website at pittmeadows.bc.ca under the City Hall tab, under Business Plans > Budget 2016.

After department business plan presentations on December 9 & 10, Council will deliberate on the budget on January 13 & 14 from 5:30pm to 9pm, and if more time is needed, on January 18. Input and feedback from the public is welcomed and encouraged from Dec 4, 2015 to Feb 4, 2016.

Farrah Desjarlais feels connected to her First Nations heritage – and it shows in her artwork.

“Farrah’s a really careful painter,” explained Ilse Phillips, director of Vicuna Art Studio and Gallery which hosts a two-day exhibit this weekend.

“She paints with real definition. She paints with layer after layer after layer, and she puts a lot of her energy and her emotions into her paintings.”

From One Arrow First Nation in Saskatchewan, Farrah puts an Aboriginal motif into her artwork.

The 31-year-old painter’s work will be among the pieces on display this weekend during Nuestro Taller de Pintura (The Art of the Studio) at the Vicuna studio, 1-11491 Kingston St. The purpose behind Vicuna is inclusiveness, offering opportunities for aspiring artists with differing abilities from Ridge Meadows Association for Community Living and other organizations “to have a space for creative expression,” Phillips noted.

The studio offers support and instruction based on each individuals’ artistic goals and aspirations, its director added.

Presented by Vicuna along with PotteryWorks, this weekend’s exhibit runs from 1 to 7 p.m. on Friday, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Farrah said the painting she will have on display took her about five weeks to complete and “came very easily to me.”

Also showing a painting is 25-year-old Karla Sarradet, who recreated a winter’s evening on canvas, based on a piece by the late Ted Harrison, who was notable for his paintings of the Yukon.

“She loves anything to do with snow or winter,” Phillips related. “She loves Christmas, I think that’s why.”

This is Karla’s first experience painting from images.

“She used to do just abstract paintings,” Phillips said.

Phillips stressed that this is a studio show, spotlighting the work of serious artists who are “ambitious and come here not just for fun.”

Four athletes from Golden Ears Athletic Club are on their way to Ontario this weekend, as they compete for Team BC at the cross country running nationals

competition in Kingston.

Long-time friends and running companions, Jamie Hennessey and Madelyn Huston will be joined by teammates Christina Johnstone, and Norm Tinkham, a coach and competitor himself.

Hennessey and Huston began competitive cross country running in Grade 4, and are now Grade 11 students.

Tinkham has been their coach since they first started the sport.

Maple Ridge golfer Justin Shin got his pass recently to the final stage via the PGA Tour China circuit, where he has already enjoyed some success this year and is on the money list. The final stage takes place from Dec. 10 to 13, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

The Meadow Ridge Blue Knights atom team are the victors for the second year in a row, after the team competed in the B.C. Community Football Association Championships in Kamloops. The team also went undefeated for the second consecutive season.
