3. Buy organic when you can. Every year the Environmental Working Group puts out a guide (called the “Dirty Dozen”) to the produce with the most pesticides, this can also be found on their website. When possible, incorporate more natural/ organic furniture and textiles in your life. 4. Live more simply, buy less, choose alternatives. Our consumer/ convenience driven culture seems to be driving our toxic world. It's a great reason to evaluate our needs and see where we can consume less, make do or use a less toxic product. 5. Do as much as you can and then let it go. I'd like to think that arming yourself with all of this information can be empowering, but I know in reality that it can also be stressful. The EWG site also contains a link to “Healthy Child, Healthy World” a place for parents to learn more about creating healthier homes for children.

hen newly minted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was asked about filling cabinet with 50 per cent female MPs, the Liberal leader replied: “Because it’s 2015.” Meanwhile on the Internet, thousands of women – and probably some men – were sharing photos of Trudeau looking decidedly more G.Q. than P.M. along with the hashtag #PMILF – Prime Minister I’d Like to Fuck. After Trudeau’s win, British tabloid The Mirror ran a story with the headline “Is Justin Trudeau the sexiest politician in the world?” which went on to describe the 43-year old as a “heartthrob”, “luscious” and “spellbinding”. Is it reverse sexism? Is it gender equality on some weird level? Or is it ‘just because it’s 2015?’ Speaking of Trudeau’s cabinet, Vancouver south representative Harjit Singh Sajjan, our new minister of National Defence, comes with a ton of street cred. A former highly-decorated lieutenant-colonel, Sajjan has four operational deployments, one to Bosnia and three to Afghanistan, was a member of the Vancouver Police Department for 11 years serving as a detective for the Gang Crime Unit – sounds like we’re in good hands. If you’re tired of politics and just want to have a good laugh, there’s a new venue in town for that. The Mint, 1414 Douglas, is adding a weekly open mic on Wednesdays giving anyone who wants to try their hand at making a bunch of strangers laugh, three minutes to give it a shot. Doors open at 7pm, comics sign up at 7:30pm and the fun starts at 8pm. Check out comedyinvictoria.com for other venues and shows. Now here’s a real discovery, Monday columnist Robert Moyes tells me Masia F, a Spanish “vino tinto” made entirely from Tempranillo grapes that has oodles of red-berry flavours and is supple and spicy on the palate is perfectly potable. And the $9.30 price makes this probably the bargain of the year. The only problem is you can only buy it from the LCB by the case (they bring it in for some private stores, who sell it by the bottle, but at a much higher price). A Christmas wish come true The day was December 23, 2013. I had thought a lot about this day for a long time. I was nervous, scared, and endlessly excited. This was the day that I would ask my best friend, the love of my life, if she would be silly enough to spend the rest of her life with me. A month earlier, I was standing on the deck of her parents house in the freezing cold trying to kick up the courage to ask her dad for permission. I finally did. He said he would think about it. What I didn’t know at the time was that he wanted to make sure that his daughter was happy and that I was the one for her. He is a small town, blue collar man of few words. If I am being honest, I didn’t know if he was keen to have his daughter spend the rest of her life
with a Scottish Drag Queen. He gave me his blessing the next morning as I packed up the car. On the big night, with ring in pocket, we made our way to our favourite winter spot, Butchart Gardens. An absolute Christmas wonderland. I have never met anybody more excited for the Christmas season than my wife. This time of year has never really started until I hear her high pitched squeal of “IT’S CHRISTMAS!!!” the first time she sees festive lights. It is one of my favorite sounds in the world. As we walked around the gardens, I kept trying to find a spot to pop the question, and anytime I thought I found one, we were always surrounded by hundreds of tourists. As we got to the end of the tour, I asked if we could go back to the sunken gardens one more time. When we got there, my plan was to propose in the tiny house at the top, but as we walked around to the door I saw a path with nobody on it. We walked down the path and came to a lookout that

has the best view in the entire place and not a soul around. I looked at her parents and then knew what was going to happen. The rest is a blur of nerves and emotion. I asked her the question and she said ‘yes.’ We cried. We laughed. We shouted off the edge of the lookout “WE GOT ENGAGED!” When I was just a little kid, my dad unexpectedly passed away a few days before Christmas. After that, Christmas was less about presents and more about family. For years it was just my mom and I, enjoying the lights, the music and the food. After my mom passed in 2011, I was alone, and I was pretty sure I wouldn’t ever have that feeling of family again. I was wrong. I married a woman who is more excited about the spirit of the holidays than anybody I have ever known, and who has always shown me that even if life has gotten you down, that the loving feeling of family is always … possible.

anadian jazz singer Holly Cole is big in Japan – and that’s no joke. “At a certain point I was going four times a year. I like it a lot there, it’s so different though,” she says. After the release of 1993’s Don’t Smoke in Bed, Cole made her first visit to the island nation. “I don’t really know what it was, but holy mackerel, did we fly out of the gate. The first time I went there it was like Beatlemania at the airport and I’ve never experienced that. I’m used to paying my dues. And paying them, and paying them, and paying them – that’s what jazz musicians usually do. And there I was just like, ‘you’ve got to be kidding me.’” One of those trips left Cole and her band quite shaken up, no pun intended. “We were there for the earthquake, the bad, bad, bad earthquake,” she says. “We were in the hotel and it was swaying back and forth, stuff was falling from the ceiling on our heads. People were screaming and running and wiping out in the hallways … I was on a different floor than my band, and I was (thinking) ‘my band’s going to die, my crew’s going to die, it was absolutely horrible and so scary.” The group was in Tokyo during the magnitude 9.0 Tohoku earthquake that triggered a deadly tsunami, and all suffered post traumatic stress after returning home to Canada. “Any shuddering sound like if my washing machine went on the spin cycle, it was, ‘oh my god, oh my god,’” she says. And though a trip to Victoria from her home in Halifax carries a risk of earthquake, it’s not the first thing on her mind. “I love it there, and so does the band. We’re playing with the symphony there which is wonderful. I always look forward to coming there and the band does too, because we always have great gigs. The symphony’s great – and even if we don’t play with the symphony – the crowd is great. People come and are vocal, active participants and really are clearly into the shows and I think there’s a really reciprocal vibe that happens.” Cole loves performing her Christmas show and feels a strong connection to the holiday. “My first name’s Holly which is pretty Christmassy, then Cole, like a lump of coal in your stocking and I’m born on Nov. 25, exactly a month before Christmas so there’s a lot of Christmas stuff in my life.” In fact her first EP, released in 1989, was a Christmas record. “It was on vinyl too, that was a long time ago,” she says. She describes the show, Christmas with Holly Cole as about sharing the Christmas spirit along with having some fun. “I find I spend a lot of time poking a stick at Christmas a little bit in the commercialism and stuff – it’s kind of easy to make fun of that … But I’ll tell you one thing, I’m working hard making Santa seem sexy up there. It takes a lot of work to make Santa seem kind of sexy.” The show includes favourite Christmas tunes along with Cole’s unique interpretations of jazz and pop favourites. “I’m craving and loving coming back to Victoria, it’s been a few years. I love the venue, I love the symphony and I just love the Holly Cole with the vibe of the city and the energy of the crowd, there’s no bad gigs there, and not only that, I feel like the crowd anticipates me Victoria Symphony coming and I anticipate going there.” Orchestra, Dec 19

Snuggle up with a good (local) book D
aksha Narsing began cooking with her mother before she was a teen. “My mom was an amazing cook. She learned from my grandmother who taught us how to clean the spices as well as how to grind them. I could make full meals by the time I was 10, my sister could as well,” she says. Now a mother herself, Narsing has been sharing her secret spice mixes since the early 1990s when she and her family lived in Williams Lake. “It started when my neighbours came over, they said, ‘We can’t stand it anymore, what smells so good? What are you cooking?’” she laughs. From then on she began to teach Indian cooking and share her spices and recipes, and in 1996, stapled some together in Ziploc bags and sold them at a neighbourhood craft fair. “That’s where it all began. People loved it.” She brings in whole spices, cleans and grinds them together which blends the oils, creating the unique taste in Daksha’s Gourmet Spices. Daksha and her husband Bhaskar were both born in Africa but are of Indian descent. The pair met in England where they married, and settled in Canada to raise their family. All three children attended the University of Victoria, and Narsing said with each visit, she and her husband were drawn to the area. “Every single time it felt like home.” So when the time came to take their business to the next level, they had to choose a life in Calgary or Victoria, although the business opportunity seemed brighter in the east, Victoria had won their hearts. Over the years, the pair have created a variety of delicious spice mixes. They also make chai spice – a recipe that has been in their family for more than 300 hundred years. Recently Narsing released her fourth cook book, Daksha’s Gourmet Kitchen: Indian Fusion Cuisine. She says it’s the best of traditional recipies along with new creations. “My daughter mixed vegetables with dahl and created a dahl strew, it’s nice for cold, fall weather … comfort food,” she says. “My son and his girlfriend created a butter chicken pizza – it’s really good. We are really pleased with the recipe.” With beautiful colourful photography to go along with the nearly 100 recipes, this is a cookbook that won’t just sit on the shelf. o thumb through Lorna Crozier and Ian McAllister’s new book The Wild In You: Voices from the Forest and the Sea, is to take a journey to the heart of the coastal rainforest and feel its call. Crozier, professor of poetry in the University of Victoria’s department of writing, and an Officer of the Order of Canada, has written 16 books, The Wild in You: Voices from the Forest and the Sea, is her first collaboration. “I’ve had my poetry set to music, everything from classical and jazz to honky-tonk and I’ve had various artists use my poetry for inspiration in painting or pottery but this is my first time collaborating on a book,” she says. It began with a trip to the Great Bear Rainforest where she met McAllister, his wife and mother. “Ian is a very busy guy but his wife and mom are big fans of my poetry and my husband Patrick Lane – the fact that he would give up time to see me was remarkable – and we hit it off.” Crozier was “blown away” by the beauty and majesty of the area. “I’ve taken a couple of trips to Africa to read my poetry, while I was there I went on the typical safari and saw elephants, lions, cheetahs, wild buffalo and I thought that would probably be the most thrilling natural setting – but this is better,” she says. She was eager to collaborate with McAllister and to call attention to the area. “To know that this is one of the last, large, pristine rainforests left on the planet makes the place even more special.” Crozier’s poetry accompanies McAllister’s 32 full-size photographs, capturing the raw emotion of the coastline including many rare and endangered species.

Christmas cheer for your ears LAURA LAVIN editor@mondaymag.com When sounds of the Victoria Symphony first rang out, gentlemen arrived in top hats and tails while ladies sported white gloves, furs and evening gowns to listen to the ambitious group of musicians. Now in its 75th season, the VSO continues to carry on the tradition of music worthy of a tuxedo, while playing to an entirely less formal audience. “The music is being created by a really young orchestra … there’s a lot of young people in their 20s and 30s,” says Maestra Tania Miller. “We’ve really tried in Victoria – and I think achieved – the sense we’ve shaken things up and kind of created something that’s diverse and unexpected.” What’s not unexpected is the symphony’s spectacular December, highlighted this year with a special appearance by superstar cellist Yo Yo Ma, Dec. 7. The holiday theme continues with a Sentimental Christmas Dec. 11 to 13 with soprano Eleanor McCain. “We are really excited because this year it’s going to be an enormous, traditional Christmas concert with a big choir, the Victoria Choral Society,” Miller says. “Also we’re excited that the St. Michaels Children’s Choir will be joining us for some John Adams music from Home Alone so we’re gearing up for a beautiful concert there with the whole community involved. That concert is very warm with singalongs involving the audience and traditional jokes and things about Christmas. It’s just a fun time to bring your whole family to it.” Guest conductor Robert Franz leads the Victoria Symphony for the annual presentation of Handel’s Messiah Dec. 18 and 20 while Christmas with Holly Cole continues the month of festivities Dec 19. “The Christmas pops concert is a perfect concert for people to experience if they’ve never been to the symphony before,” says Miller. “The repertoire is very mixed, it’s full of hits from movies or from classic or jazzy or popular or secular sort of Christmas hits. There’s a lot of humour involved, same thing with Holly Cole. For an audience member who hasn’t been to the symphony before, try out Christmas pops, try out Holly Cole and you’ll see how much fun it is and how beautiful music makes the Christmas season. I think that’s why people do gravitate towards the symphony in the Christmas season, they want to make their lives special, they want to make their month and their season, their holiday special. They want to bring together not only family – but I think everybody’s searching for that deep meaningful good feeling that life is all about and that’s what music does on a regular basis.” The festive season finishes Jan. 1 with A Viennese New Year’s as conductor Brian Jackson returns to lead the seventh annual New Year’s Day tradition, featuring dancers from Ballet Victoria and two delightful vocalists.

ust two years before Victoria’s Theatre Inconnu launched in 1978, Governor General’s Award-winning author Jack Hodgkins wrote a book of short stories, creating a cast of memorable characters set in the diverse landscape of Vancouver Island. orn and raised in Victoria, singer-songwriter Claire Coupland is making a name for herself in Toronto, but has yet to make her professional debut in her own hometown. “I’ve been gigging a ton in Toronto, but not in Victoria, it’s all happening here. I have friends and family in Victoria who have no idea what I do,” the Toronto-based artist says. Coupland graduated from Vic High in 2004 with an eye to a career in sports. “I was really into sports, I thought I’d go into field hockey then I auditioned for the Vic High Rhythm and Blues Band – it was great.” A gap year spent in England and Greece, turned her in a different direction. ‘When I came back to Victoria to go to school I took Camosun’s applied communication program … It was a program I was mildly interested in. I was thinking about doing radio, I was always doing funny voices and everyone would say, ‘you should go into radio, do voice-over work’, so that’s what I thought I would do,” she says. But her heart wasn’t really in it. “Then I met someone at work and he suggested we start a band together. He really encouraged me to go into music.” After getting her degree at Camosun, she decided to study at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. “I’d never studied music so in the summer of 2010 I took a theory course, it was awful, but I had to do it to get into the program,” she says. A year of jazz studies in Victoria led her to another music program at Humber College in Toronto. “At Humber, in spite of huge fears of song writing, I finally got through my fears and started writing in 2012. I now have an album (Lonely Heart, 2014) and my newest EP (For You, 2015) which was recorded at Humber College Studios.” Throughout college she would return home to Victoria for Christmas but never found the time to play for an audience here. “When you’re in music school, the last thing you have time for is music,” she laughs at the irony. “School is great but it keeps you really busy.” Having graduated last April, Coupland knew she couldn’t put off her official Victoria debut any longer. “I played at Solstice Café years ago and I was super-nervous. Gripping mystery
D
oubt motivates us to challenge, to search, to consider. Doubt, A Parable is a play artfully designed to inspire discussion. The major topic of discussion will inevitably be whether Father Brendan Flynn is guilty of sexual abuse, but in fact that question is irrelevant to playwright John Patrick Shanley's ends. The point Shanley is making is that doubt has value, and more importantly, that doubt can be a means of binding a community. The play was turned into an Academy Awardnominated film starring Philip Seymour Hoffman as Father Flynn and Meryl Streep as Sister Aloysius. As a special feature, after each performance (except matinees) the audience is invited to Reflections, a moderated discussion (20-30 min.) of the issues presented by Doubt. e didn’t expect to see Santa Claus walking along Dallas Road. But there he seemed to be – with a big, white beard and a furry, red hat. He said he was just visiting Victoria and “getting limbered up, preparing for the big night.” The videographer and I smiled, appreciating how the man played along with how he looked and what he was wearing. But I wondered about the truth – why the Santa hat? The man laughed a jolly laugh and said “I’ve got dozens of them at The Pole of course. But I needed one out here.” So he said he stopped at a thrift shop in Crofton on his way down from Tofino and, “picked it up for 75 cents!” The woman he was walking with – who was introduced as Mrs. Claus – said it was nice to see how the hat put a “sparkle” in the eyes of people passing by. The videographer started getting pictures for our story at the end of the News, of people smiling, doing double-takes, and proclaiming “Merry Christmas.” I asked Mrs. Claus how long her partner had looked like Santa. She said the remarkable resemblance was relatively new because Dave’s beard only recently turned white. That’s when she admitted her name was Carol and that her husband had been wearing a

Santa hat yearround for decades. Dave had also been invited to play Santa professionally dozens of times, but he always declined. “I don’t do this for money,” he said. “This is about putting smiles on people’s faces.” After spending 43-years as a social worker, Dave knows there’s a lot of people who feel like there’s little to smile about. Especially recently. “I thought I’d better get people cheered up a little bit, with all the terrible things that happened in Paris.” So Dave is wearing a Santa hat weeks before the big day – with the hope of spreading cheer and inspiring others to do the same. “Do what’s in your heart,” he suggests. “If it’s Santa, be Santa. If it’s something else, throw your heart after it. It’ll work out. It’ll be really good.” And then Dave turns to smile and wave at a frowning stranger passing by. A man who looks back when he thinks the camera is no longer pointing at him, and smiles the biggest of smiles back at Santa. Adam Sawatsky is an anchor at CTV News Vancouver Island. rganizers of the live First Christmas Nativity Pageant on Topaz Avenue know firsthand actors can be as stubborn as a mule, particularly if they are one. There is a donkey which is relied upon every year for the performance’s manger scene that has memorized his cues so well he refuses to stray from them. “I said to my daughter, ‘We’ll take
the donkey on the set before the crowd comes.’ Well, we were trying to drag this donkey on, he would not go on the set,” says longtime pageant actor Peter Gill. “As soon as he heard his music he just walks on the set.” The donkey is just one part component of a production featuring a cast of 120 people and a few other fourlegged friends. With the crew behind them, in all about 200 people come together every holiday season to bring the story of Jesus’ birth to life.

Every year the pageant, put on by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, attracts more than 6,000 people to take in the performances, which run four times per night for three nights, starting on Monday, Dec. 21 at 6:30pm. Each performance is a half-hour long. The nativity pageant first came to life 29 years ago, when a member of the church began to eye up Topaz Park as a perfect location for a pageant. “It changed our Christmas,” producer Lyanne Jaubert-Sanderson said. “Everybody who participates, all of a sudden it brings back Christmas and presents don’t mean as much. Even the kids say ‘This is Christmas.’” The location itself is a pocket of peace and quiet in a city buzzing with preparation for Christmas. Topaz Avenue is closed to traffic for the event and the streetlights are turned off, leaving a still, quiet setting in the park. “It’s like we’re in another world,” Jaubert-Sanderson said. “It’s quite close to Blanshard (Street) but it’s amazing, it’s like it all disappears.” The production starts at the begin-
ning, when the Bible says the angel Gabriel told Mary she was to have a child. The pageant then moves through the birth of Jesus and the visits of the shepherds and wise men. The whole thing ends in the singing of the finale to Handel’s Messiah. Mary and Joseph are the most carefully selected roles, with the actors chosen for being people who best represent the spirit of their characters. Many people vie for the roles, although not always for the most obvious reason. “We’ve been actually pretty successful, we’re up to four marriages I think,” said director Wendy Yzenbrant. Gill’s granddaughter met her husband by playing the role. “All the girls want to be Mary,” Jaubert-Sanderson said. ‘Will you make us Mary this year, because there’s some really cute guys.’ … It’s just a running joke.” Bleachers and chairs are available but the event does get busy, so it can be standing room only. The free show will go on rain or shine. The first two shows of the evening, at 6:30 and 7 pm, are typically the busiest.

The secret to living happy The Christmas season is supposed to be a joyful time spent with family and friends. But often the holidays can also be a time when feelings of loss and loneliness surface for seniors, making them feel blue and left out in the cold. But there are ways to improve these feelings, which is why Victoria’s Silver Threads Service has partnered with the Canadian Mental Health Association, B.C. division to deliver the four-week program, Living Life to the Full for Seniors. “We just thought it would be a good time to give seniors some skills to help them cope with this time of year and life overall,” said Tracy Ryan, executive director of Silver Threads. “You can certainly learn tricks and techniques to help

you cope positively.” According to Ryan, one of the things seniors can do to improve their lives is to maintain social connections, even if it’s as simple as having a cup of coffee with someone to chat. The program teaches participants that all the things we experience, think, feel and do are interconnected. Using cognitive behavioural principles, participants learn how to reverse negative habits and develop new processes to rebuild happiness. So, I thought it would be a good idea to check out some local kitchen stores and see what cool kitchen ware is available to make your holiday dinner a little easier. They too, sell a wide variety of colourful cookware, dishes of all shapes, utensils and everything kitchen. There, I found out where to put that beautifully roasted bird after it’s out of the roaster. This Acacia wood carving board is perfectly designed to carve the meat and have the juices drain to a small pool where you can keep your slices moist. Good functional design is everything! With that in mind, before you start carefully planning a festive meal for friends and family, pop into one of these local specialty shops and find out what will make that bird easier to get to the table.
