Expanding horizons at Balu

n the vibrant downtown core of Revelstoke, BC, Balu Yoga and Wellness recently reopened its doors, bigger and better than ever.

“We always knew we wanted Balu in a bigger space,” explains co-owner Noelle Bovon. “In Revelstoke we have such a tremendous amount of room, people don’t want to be mat to mat to mat like in the city although, of course, that can happen. We also wanted to offer more wellness services.”

Bovon and co-owner Sheri Zebroff had looked at available spaces and when, this past summer, the space next to them became available, they knew it was time.

Bovon’s husband, Peter Murray, ran the renovation — expanding the studio space and creating a new entrance, coat room and service provider rooms. Balu is the main base for a midwife, nutritional consultant and three registered massage therapists, all alongside the yoga studio.

Balu is also home to a multitude of talented yoga teachers. “It’s essential to cultivate a community of teachers who want to be here,” Bovon says. “We better our teaching, learn from each other and build a real yoga community.”

The studio offers a huge range of classes, from prenatal to mom and baby, bikram, yin, vinyasa, flows, to yoga for elders, yoga for skiers and restorative yoga. Balu hosts teacher training programs, workshops and retreats, this past year doing trips to both the Yukon and Halycon.

After class, practitioners can grab a water from the kitchen unit or purchase coconut water or a Kootenay Juice Co fresh pressed raw drink or snag a high quality pair of yoga leggings.

Everyone is welcome at Balu, regardless of his or her experience with yoga. “Flexibility is not required,” Bovon explains.

NOELLE BOVON

oelle Bovon has been an owner of Balu Yoga and Wellness since the studio’s relocation in 2011 to the downtown core. Her past work experience encompasses managing helicopter ski operations to leading month-long remote backpacking and river expeditions aimed at teaching leadership development and communication.

Bovon’s passion for yoga comes from reaping its benefits herself. Suffering from chronic back issues that sometimes debilitated her to the point of immobility, Bovon was introduced to yoga in 2002.

“A steady practice of yoga built me back up,” Bovon says.

Bovon took her teacher training program in 2009 to further her own practice, but sometime during the course she decided she wanted to teach. “I realized it was for me, it aligned with my principles.”

Bovon has a love for both Vinyasa and restorative practice.

An entrepreneur by heart with a strong work ethic, Bovon relished the opportunity to work for herself with a partner who has the same vision.

ne of Balu’s three registered massage therapists, Kimberly Hayes loves the newly renovated space. “They did a beautiful job,” she says. “It’s so nice to have the space, especially the entrance, before you head into the studio.”

An adventure seeking nomad, Hayes has lived in numerous places from Whistler to the Prairies, though she and her fiancée had long known they wanted to move to Revelstoke before they took the leap.

“We gave ourselves 10 days to find a house and jobs, and we were done in three,” Hayes laughs.

Hayes always knew she was going to be a massage therapist. “I kept meaning to go to school but then other things would happen instead. Finally, the fourth time, I found myself in the classroom at Grant MacEwan in Edmonton,” Hayes relates. “I remember thinking, ‘Whew, I made it.’”

Hayes’ massages range from relaxation to deep tissue and figuring out what every individual needs. “My favourite massages are when you know you connected with the person,” she explains. “When they walk away and you know you gave them exactly what was needed.”

yoga instructor at Balu, Lisa Cyr relocated to Revelstoke last year from Calgary, where she had worked as a full time yoga instructor.

Having previously been to Balu to practice during ski trips to Revelstoke and knowing Bovon from an advanced 300 hour teacher training course they took together in 2009, Cyr approached Bovon about instructing at Balu. As luck would have it, there was space for another teacher.

Cyr is a big believer of yoga as a form of physiotherapy. “I crushed a vertebrate in my back in 2001,” Cyr explains. “I was a student and had no benefits past a couple of physio sessions.” It was her physiotherapists who suggested yoga to aid her recovery. “I wouldn’t have the mobility I have today without yoga,” Cyr says.

Her favourite classes to teach generally fall under the Hatha umbrella. “Slow and deep,” she says. “It gives you time to look at the inner working of your body. In a flow it’s easy to collapse out a pose and not know it. I love holding a pose, getting the right alignment and challenging myself to go deeper into it.”

R

evelstoke metal smith artist Kat Cadegan credits her tree planting background for her giving her the ability to produce the same piece multiple times in her art studio. It’s a good thing too, as she is currently in the midst of her busiest time of year, with Christmas and other winter holidays fast approaching.

“It gets overwhelmingly busy because I always want to please people and I want to say yes I can do that, but already I’m like I can’t do anymore custom work,” said Cadegan.

While Cadegan says she was always artistic, it wasn’t until she started working with metal that she really found her creative niche. In 2006, she spent six months in India learning more about the artform. “That’s where I did my first metal smithing workshop and just really realized this is what I really wanted to do and pursue,” she said. “I think for me it was the ability to take the idea into metal and make it into a tangible object, but also metal is very forgiving — you can move it one way and you can move it back.”

Cadegan is also able to combine her metal smithing with her background in forestry, with much of her inspiration coming from nature.

“I think that definitely comes from the fact that all through university I was tree planting to pay for university, and then I was tree planting to pay for travel, and I’ve just spent so much time in the woods and the forest always collecting mossy sticks, bones,” said Cadegan. “I’m just a magpie when it comes to collecting things.

My eyes are always looking, thinking, what would that look like in metal. My pockets are always filled with little things to try.”

Those nature-themed inspirations come from just about everywhere, including the community garden at the Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre. Cadegan recently finished completing pieces that were inspired by dill growing in the garden.

“I’m constantly picking up pieces and ideas,” she said.

Other inspirations have included sea fans, as well as branches she found while surveying a cut block in the Cache Creek area.

She had been looking for branches for years, but felt those she was finding would not translate well into metal. While working in Cache Creek she found the perfect branches all within a 20 meter radius.

Cadegan continues to foreman a planting crew each spring, as a way to take a break from art, and also because she loves being outside. “It just feeds that part of my brain where I need to be outside and get ideas,” she said.

Travel is also a huge inspiration for Cadegan, who plans to head to Indonesia for Christmas.“I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’m sure it’s going to be some form of inspiration. I’m going there with an open mind and they have such a rich tradition over there so I just want to go watch see and learn,” she said.

his is a big year for you. You went out and got yourself a bright, shiny ski suit, the better to show up in photos and videos your aspiring-pro photographer and videographer friends take. You spent the summer doing squats and crunches and yoga to get in shape. You’ve been at the trampoline gym every day, working on your backflips, front flips, corks and all that flippyspinny stuff the pros do. You bought a Go Pro. Actually, you bought four Go Pros, because you need to capture all the angles, at once.

You want to be a pro. Now what?

“I would say the most important thing is to be able to show your value as an athlete, however that looks,” Joe Johnson, who handles marketing for Salomon, told me. “Really focus in on what skills you have, not only when it comes to skiing, but outside of skiing.”

For more advice, I reached out to Revelstoke’s numerous pro athletes, who include snowmobilers, skiers, snowboarders and mountain bikers.

How did they get to their position, getting free gear and getting sent on trips around the world to ski or snowboard or bike? I reached out to a dozen local pro athletes to find out how they made their dreams a reality, the importance of social media, and what advice they have for aspiring athletes.

They connected him with the representatives from several brands, who he is still with today.

His advice to aspiring pros was to have fun while skiing and be professional when dealing with companies.

“I think my biggest advice for talking to new sponsors is being professional and not having the attitude that you deserve something from them,” he said. “It is a symbiotic relationship with a sponsor, so it is important to treat it that way. You never know who is going to become your new boss in this game, so it is important to never burn bridges and always be nice.”

Lustenberger got her first pro deal from Rossignol when she was a young racer beating the boys. She eventually made the Canadian World Cup team and raced in the 2006 Turin Olympics, but had to bow out of racing in 2008 after multiple knee surgeries. Her love of the mountains and skiing stayed with her and she eventually qualified to become an ACMG ski guide, on top of being a pro skier with deals with Volkl and Arc’Teryx. “As long as I can remember all I ever wanted to do was ski, and be in the mountains,” she said. “Becoming ‘pro,’ or actually making a living doing this happened naturally.”

She was connected to her sponsors through friends and ski partners.

“Ski for yourself, set goals, and pursue your dream,” she said. “I also think that skiing and your career will evolve, so keep learning and pushing yourself at whatever you are doing.”

For Bernier, who also owns her own residential design business and works at Mountain Goodness, getting sponsored required years of training, skinning up and down mountains and rising to near the top of the ski mountaineering race circuit. Her first sponsorship with G3 came after winning a few races in Whistler. Her efforts paid off with sponsorships from Ski Trab, Suunto, Scarpa, and Rab Clothing; and local businesses Skookum and Helios.

“The best advice is be open to meeting new people because you never know,” she said. “We are all connected and it’s a very small industry. Always speak of your sport with the passion that drives you, it’s contagious and sponsors are looking for people that are stoked to share their love and excitement for what they do!” ocial media is a huge part of being a pro athlete these days. “Personally, I enjoy going out and trying to capture the feeling that we have when we are out there,” said Rubens. “The better the photo that shows this, the more it is liked. It is kinda of a different challenge than just the ski side.”

For Joe Johnson and Salomon, being able to market yourself as a brand is key. “Being able to promote yourself, whether it’s social media, whether it’s video, whether its the written word, whether its photos — being able to show the value you bring to an organization through that in addition to your skiing,” he said.

He noted how Rubens is constantly active, whether it’s skiing in the winter, or climbing and biking in the summer, and he’s always showcasing his adventures. Meanwhile, Brody Levens, another Salomon athlete, is a strong writer and pens his own articles, while Mark Abma is a fixture of ski movies.

“It’s finding those people who possess a variety of different skills when it comes to the outdoors and when it comes to the promotion of themselves as individual brands,” said Johnson, when asked what Salomon looked for in athletes.

Getting signed on by a brand like Salomon takes a lot of work and a certain level of success in your sport. If you’re looking for a starting point, a few local shops offer sponsorship deals. Mike Gravelle at Skookum Cycle & Ski, offers deals to aspiring professional athletes, noting the support they’ve provided local teenage cyclist Kellen Viznaugh.

Free Spirit Sports has established an eight-person pro team who promote the store and the brands they carry.

The team started two winters ago as a small, four person group, and doubled in size last year. They get a gear allowance from the story and this year a few athletes have picked up sponsorships from the brands the store carries.

“I wanted representatives of our store out there, doing stuff, wearing the gear, talking it up,” said Liz Rorstad, who manages the team. “On an altruistic front we wanted to show support for local riders and skiers, but also for marketing for us, that was the main piece.”

They expect their athletes to be out there promoting the brands and the store. They carry referral cards with them, which they can give out to inquisitive people on the chairlift or elsewhere.

“I think it’s a great way to do a spin on the whole marketing thing,” said Rorstad. “It creates buzz. We get a lot of people asking if they can be on the team.”

There you have it — get active in the mountains and on the Internet, and ask around. If you have the right skills, make the right connections and have the right attitude, you to can be a pro.

On the pulse of your boots

P

alkeinen brings 20 years of experience to the business. He started fitting in Whistler in 1993 and worked for many years in Europe, running a boot fitting shop in Chamonix before leaving the industry and training as a paramedic in 2011. He and his partner (in business and life) Kelly Hutcheson moved to Revelstoke last year, and Palkeinen was lured back into the business, seeing an opportunity with the lack of a proper boot fitting service in town.

Pulse Bootfitting is located at 106 Orton Ave., next door to the Cabin. It’s easily noticeable by the bright green awning. Walking inside, there’s a wall of ski boots arranged on the far side. To the left is the boot bar, where you can relax while work is being done on your equipment. To the right is a row of seats where the fitting is done. I’ve worn size 28.5 boots for years now. It’s been my go-to size and for the most part has treated me well, so it was a bit of shock to be told they’re actually too big. As Palkeinen explained, the issue I, and many others face, is that when you try on a boot, your foot isn’t properly supported. As the liner packs out, there’s more space inside the boot, your foot moves around more, and you get problems. A foot that is properly supported doesn’t need a big boot. ‘When your foot is supported properly, your foot is a very different shape, and that’s how you probably ended up in a boot that’s too big,” he said. he boot fitting process begins with Palkeinen getting you to fill out a form with your height and weight. He’ll also ask what kind of skier you are and how often you ski. “Someone that skis five or six days, we’re not going to fit them the same way we’ll fit someone who skis 50 days a year,” he said. He’ll ask if you have any physical or medical issues that might affect your feet, and any old injuries.

Only then will Palkeinen actually measure your feet. When he did that to me, he had me place my feet on the pad, and then rolled my feet in and out. Foot volume and stability play a role in the process. “By this point we’re usually at four to five minutes trying to explain some stuff and getting people very comfortable with the fact we do things differently and it’s a different level,” he said.

Once the measurements are done, Palkeinen will select you a boot. He carries boots by Head and K2.

The former, he said, are for the more casual skier who skis only a dozen or so days a year because they’re more comfortable out of the box. The K2s

M

y boots are too big. That’s the hard truth Kai Palkeinen, the owner of Pulse Bootfitting, tells me when I paid him a visit at his new store a few weeks ago.

My Scarpa Maestrale RS touring boots, which I bought at the start of last year, had been giving me trouble on long ski tours. Notably, my feet would cramp up on long descents, especially if it involved negotiating very technical terrain, where I really had to work for my turns I went to Pulse for the purpose of this article, but also to get my boots fit by someone with many years experience as a boot fitter. I walked out with a primer on boot fitting that was far more detailed than any I’d heard before.

At Pulse, you can buy boots two ways. You can just get the boot with the stock liner, or you can get a fully-customized package that includes the boot, a custom-fitted liner, a custom footbed and a pair of socks. The packages range in price from $1,200 to $1,500, depending on what boot you buy. “The idea is get into right size shell so you’re getting the fit from the shell,” he said. “Liners complement the shell that fits well.”

Of course, he recommends going with a custom liner. “The stock liners are horrible on every single boot on the market and they give people a poor impression of what the boot is,” he said.

“Stock liners are inevitable replaced with injection liners, and then you’ll have a custom-fitted boot and it will last 300 ski

days.”

Palkeinen told me I should be in a size 27.5 boot. He placed me in a pair and my feet screamed in pain, but he assured me that after a few days, they would feel better. He added he can make a boot bigger by punching it out, but you can’t really make a big boot smaller. He estimates 80-90 per cent of the people who have come in the store are in boots that are too big.

I wasn’t in the financial position to get new boots, let along the complete custom package, so I settled on a set of custom foot beds. He did make a good sales pitch.

“When you get into a boot that is fitted properly, it is more valuable than any ski lesson you can ever take,” he told me. “All of a sudden, control and confidence skyrockets.”

What’s new this winter

THE LAST WEEKEND OF NOVEMBER IS THE UNOFFICIAL START OF WINTER IN REVELSTOKE. IT’S WHEN REVELSTOKE MOUNTAIN RESORT OPENS AND WHEN THE REVELSTOKE SNOWMOBILE CLUB HOSTS ITS ANNUAL SEASON-OPENING FUNDRAISER. WE TOUCHED BASE WITH REVELSTOKE’S MAJOR WINTER SPORTS ORGANIZATIONS TO HIGHLIGHT WHAT’S NEW IN THE MOUNTAINS THIS YEAR. ~ BY ALEX COOPER

T

he biggest news at Revelstoke Mountain Resort is the opening of the new terrain park underneath the Stoke Chair. The resort built a teaser park as a test run in April, and this year they’re making it permanent. The 11-acre park will be 450 metres long, 100 metres wide and will have more than 20 jumps and jib features for people to try their hands at. Other than that, the resort has focused on improving the existing terrain on the mountain. That means 50 acres of glading on the upper mountain and lots of earthwork to make it easier to groom the trails. They also purchased a new groomer for the upcoming season.

— The Revelstoke Snowmobile Club is excited to open up its new welcoming centre, which it hopes to finish building in mid-January. The $400,000 facility will be located at the Boulder Mountain

parking lot, and will include a ticket desk, offices, bathrooms and maintenance shed. The club has started grooming on Boulder and Frisby Ridge.

— The Revelstoke Nordic Ski Club continues to grow and has hired an operations manager, bringing its staff up to three. The club is hosting an Okanagan Cup race on January 2, and the Team Scream Relay in February. They’ve also added to their fleet of rental skis for this season.

— For those venturing into the backcountry, Avalanche Canada is once again pushing its Mountain Information Network. The online social media platform allows people to post trip reports and post their snowpack observations via the Avalanche Canada app or website. The goal is to increase the amount of information out there for the public, and for the centre’s forecasters.

DAN MANGAN Come check out this Canadian indie rock star. From the stripped down acoustic songs of 2010s Nice Nice Very Nice, to the sweeping orchestral arrangement of 2012's Oh Fortune, Mangan always looks to move forward and challenge himself, winning two Juno Awards in the process. His latest release, Club Meds, is darker and more complex than his past efforts. At the Revelstoke Performing Arts Centre at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25, available in advance at the Visitor Information Centre, ArtFirst and the Revelstoke Arts Council website.

OPENING DAY AT REVELSTOKE MOUNTAIN RESORT Camp out the night before, or get up really early and get in line for first tracks as RMR opens its eighth season. The lifts start spinning at 8:30 a.m.

SPOT Spot will take the audience to the farm of his father Sam, where all the animals are lost. Spot and his friend Helen are going to need the help of the audience to find all the animals and bring them back to the farm. They require the audiences help to recognize the sounds of the animals and find them.
