An Oyama vineyard owner has decided to follow her heart and not give in to fear.

Roxana Adams and her husband Bruce are making a carriage house on their property available to house Syrian refugees if needed and have received the proper approval from the District of Lake Country to make it possible.

The couple, who operate Living Water Certified Organic Vineyard, received a temporary use permit that will allow them to house refugees on their nearly six acre Oyama property if the need arises.

“This is a humanitarian issue that affects the whole world,” said Roxana. “I’ve never seen anything like this in my lifetime. We talked about it and our carriage house is empty for most of the winter. We just thought ‘why not?’

“I think some people will say ‘not in my backyard,’ but I think that’s coming from people’s fears and not being led by their heart. There are a very few number of people that are the ones that are terrorists. It’s miniscule.

“These people are leaving something that is really bad and I agree that we should be doing

Adams added that she believes the Canadian government has and will continue to do an excellent job of screening.

“It is the very vulnerable that are being allowed in,” she said.

“Women and children, families and often relatives of families already here, well-educated families and many that have been waiting through

this refugee process for a few years now, already in the system,” she said.

earlier this month to ask for the special permit to allow for housing refugees, something that is not accepted under their agri-tourism desig-

nation.

Two members of the public spoke up against the application and the district also received a few letters on the issue.

All people who wrote or spoke against the move said they support efforts to help refugees but said a vineyard in Oyama that has agri-tourism designation was not the proper spot.

Country council Rosemary Misfeldt said she is in favour of helping out refugees but said a more urban area would be better for several reasons including the refugees potential isolation, lack of transportation and lack of contact with other refugees.

But at the vineyard, Adams said a rural setting might be just what is needed for a family which has been through what the Syrian refugees are dealing with.

She added Oyama Traditional School is very close to her location and the school bus goes right past their home.

She said church groups, which have taken the lead on bringing refugees into Canada, will work with families to help with transportation and becoming immersed in the community.

“The churches get very involved with getting them to family dinners and intermingling with other people that are already here with their own families,” said Adams who stressed she feels it is important for Canadians to make refugees welcome.

“It’s really important that the youth are felt like they are welcomed because that is the group that will carry on. We have to make them welcome. That’s where our heart has to lead over our fear.” newsroom@lakecountrynews.net

On Friday, November 20th the grade1/2 class was converted into a Maker Space as students used cardboard, tape, and various other materials to design and make projects as varied as flying cars, jet packs and unicorns! A lot of learning happens as young students use various materials to design and build structures.

The grade 5/6 girls’ volleyball team here at OTS has been practicing hard and playing neighbouring elementary schools.

These pics show the girls’ team at a recent game held at Peter Greer Elementary. All three Lake Country elementary schools have been playing each other each Wednesday through November and December. There is also a grade 4-6 boys’ floor hockey practice once a week here at the school. A big thanks to our teacher coaches, Miss Nelson and Mrs. Penner, for the girls’ volleyball team and Mr. Baines, for the boys’ floor hockey practice.

Students in the grade 5/6 class enjoyed learning about traditional Aboriginal beading with the help of a guest presenter. They first created in large letters their first name, then beaded along the letters. A lot of manual dexterity and perseverance was involved, yet students were very engaged in this creative activity involving generational learning.

We have a Lego Robotics programming club for intermediate students here at the school.

They build a simple robot (called a rembot) then perform increasingly complicated programming challenges on several programming mats at the school. A goal is to have a couple of teams of students participate in a Skills Canada competition in the spring.

Guest caller from the Okanagan Square Dance Association, Brian Elmer, is working with our students over three weeks to do fun “team dancing” which is square dancing set to contemporary music complete with strobe lights, etc. Everyone has a great time as they learn to Do-si-do and away-we-go and many other team dancing moves.

Woodsdale path a community effort to link neighbourhoods KEVIN PARNELL You can mark down another project for Walk Around Lake Country with the completion last week of a gravel pathway along Woodsdale Road, leading up to the intersection with Highway 97 at the south end of Lake Country.

The volunteer group, along with staff from the District of Lake Country and a grant from the Lake Country Rotary Club, built a 650 metre gravel pathway along Woodsdale Road from Seymour Road to Highway 97.

The project, mostly funded by a $6,000 grant from Rotary, aided by Lake Country staff and equipment along with other donations, added the pathway to Woodsdale Road and will make it easier for pedestrians to avoid traffic

“This was a great partnership between Walk Around Lake Country (WALC), the Rotary and the District of Lake Country,” said Dev Fraser, the president of

WALC. “We believe there is a huge need for safe pathways and we’re hoping to get a bunch more of these in the district to make our community a safer place at a

reasonable price.”

The project began at the beginning of last week and was completed by Friday. The total cost of the project may have been close to $40 to $50,000 but was completed for much less, said Fraser, thanks to volunteer efforts as well as staff time from Lake Country and supplies, some of them donated.

“I think it’s really cool and much needed,” said Greg Bucholz, the District of Lake Country’s infrastructure services director. “It isn’t the ultimate long term goal but provides short-term functionality in a very cost-effective manner to provide a safety enhancement for vulnerable users.”

Bucholz credited Walk Around Lake Country (WALC) with getting the project up and completed in

a short amount of time.

For many years WALC worked on increasing the number of trails in and around the forests and mountains of Lake Country. But with an extensive trail network now in place, the group has turned its sites on pathways that connect parts of the district.

Last year they completed a one-kilometre stretch from Oceola up to the Lake’s subdivision and with the current addition to Woodsdale road, there is now a much longer pathway connecting the community in that area.

And Fraser said they want to get more pathways done as soon as possible.

“We’re trying to link every neighbourhood, school, park, even bus stops,” said Fraser, who added the hope is to have the pathways connected

to both Pelmewash and the old CN corridor for an eventual loop trail.

The new pathway comes at a time when Lake Country is working towards its 20-year Transportation for Tomorrow Plan, looking to make the district a safer place for pedestrians and cyclists as they share the road with vehicles.

Bucholz says having a community group like WALC to help goes a long way.

“It’s absolutely wonderful,” said Bucholz.

“Every year we are adding to our inventory of sidewalks and bike lanes so this is just another piece. It would be nice to have it all done tomorrow but that’s not realistic. It’s great to be working with the community groups and people from the community.” newsroom @lakecountrynews.net

Council is next stop for parks and recreation master plan Work on a 20-year parks and recreation master plan is progressing and Lake Country council will be the next stop for the plan, which will layout the future needs for recreation facilities and parks in Lake Country.

Staff at the District of Lake Country have completed the first stage of public and user-group consultations on the plan and will compile results, an inventory of parks and facilities as well as needs identified before presenting a plan to council to get local politicians input on priorities.

“Our last major parks and recreation plan was done in 1999 so it’s out

of date and time for a new one,” said Lake Country director of infrastructure services Greg Bucholz. “A lot of what was identified in that plan was accomplished. We’re not looking at programming itself but looking at ensuring we have the main infrastructure in place to support the programming.”

Bucholz and other members of the parks and recreation department met with user groups last week to get a feel for what is needed in the community. As Lake Country has grown and its demographics have changed with many young families moving to the area, so too have the needs of the com-

munity when it comes to recreation.

Bucholz says another change is the way people recreate and the new types of recreation that are popular.

“One of the big things is how our recreational interests are changing over time,” he said.

“There was a time when no one skateboarded.

Well now people skateboard. Kayaking and paddle sports like stand up paddle boarding are huge now. We’re looking at what we will need in 20 years and what are the trends in recreation.”

Bucholz says the community consultation phase was very important as staff members heard about priorities and future needs. Over

the past year there have been several community engagement opportunities as the district has had a roving kiosk at community events as well as a community survey and meetings with user groups and stakeholders.

One group that Bucholz was happy to hear from was Lake Country youth, who gave pointers on designs for a skateboard park. Of the things that have been brought up in the process, many the district already know about such as the need for better pedestrian walkways and bike lanes. Another big priority was an improved fitness centre, the possibility of an aquatic centre, the need for a new

Bucholz said they are not ruling anything out at this time and added instead of saying no

to big ticket items, the district will look into all possibilities.

“We want to have the dialogue, maybe there is a way to make it happen with partnering rath-

er than just ruling (certain things) out,” he said.

“We don’t want to say we can’t, we want to look at how could we do it.

Generally we heard there are good levels of satisfaction with our parks and public amenities.

There was fairly strong satisfaction but we can make them better.”

Staff in the recreation department will boil down all the public comments and responses and present a plan to Lake Country council, likely in January, to get their feedback before going back to the public for more consultation as well as plans for what things will cost. newsroom @lakecountrynews.net

Lights out for opponents of Site C T he fall session of the B.C. legislature petered out two days early last week, as the ruling B.C. Liberals and the opposition NDP agreed to turn out the energy-efficient lights and head for home.

NDP leader John Horgan skipped the last day and headed to the B.C. Institute of Technology campus in Burnaby. There he announced “PowerBC,” billed as the NDP’s “bold, progressive plan for the future of B.C. energy, with a strong focus on jobs.”

Reporters asked, how many jobs? Horgan said retrofitting public buildings and homes for energy efficiency would create jobs all around the province, but he can’t say how many.

How much does the plan cost, and does it include subsidizing homeowners to fix their windows and insulation?

“The costing will be more apparent when we

Whatever the cost, the NDP plan apparently rests on the assumption that the $9 billion Site C dam project on the Peace River can be stopped by an NDP government after the 2017 election.

That money would be used to build wind and solar generation, and to install a sixth and final water turbine at Revelstoke dam.

The chances of Site C being stopped are approaching zero. Construction of an access road started two months ago, site clearing and

work camp construction a month before that.

Energy Minister Bill Bennett says the main dam construction contract will be let shortly, followed by the powerhouse contract next year.

Horgan said remaining legal challenges could slow or stop the project.

The West Moberly and Prophet River First Nations have lost their case against Site C twice, in the B.C. Supreme and Federal Courts, and are appealing. The Doig River and McLeod Lake Indian Bands dropped their challenges, and McLeod Lake’s construction company has started work on a Site C contract.

West Moberly Chief Roland Willson staged a dramatic protest at the legislature last spring, bringing a cooler of frozen bull trout from a river below the two existing Peace dams, telling media they were too contaminated with mercury to eat.

Flooding land for hydro dams does elevate methylmercury levels in water, but BC Hydro provided me with the latest study that included fish samples collected by West Moberly members.

It shows average methylmercury levels remain below federal guidelines for limiting consumption of commercially sold fish.

It’s an odd coincidence that Willson suddenly made this claim, 47 years after the first Peace dam was completed, when he happened to be in court trying to stop Site C. A coalition of U.S. and Canadian environment groups is also demanding that Site C be stopped, using typical arguments to appeal to their low-information donor base.

According to the Sierra Club and others, Site C is not renewable energy because the (largely idle) farmland it floods is a “carbon sink.” Forests do store carbon, albeit temporarily, but farmland where the trees have

been cleared? This is gluten-free gobbledegook.

They also trot out the claim that Site C will be used to power liquefied natural gas operations.

Most proponents so far have said they will use gas for LNG processing, and if they don’t have hydro available for ancillary power, they will have to burn more gas.

BC Hydro has just finished its latest grid upgrade, a second high-voltage transmission line from Merritt to Coquitlam. It adds disaster reliability to the system that brings power from the Peace and Columbia dams to the Lower Mainland.

If you’re arguing that hydroelectricity isn’t renewable power, you’ve already lost.

Be sure you’re getting regular mammograms

There’s nothing accidental about car crashes

L

uckily, B.C. has one of the lowest incidence rates and has the second lowest mortality rate of breast cancer in the country. This year an estimated 3,600 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in B.C., and an estimated 610 will die from it. However, British Columbia is a national leader in cancer prevention and treatment.

Mammograms are important. They help find cancer in its earliest stages, when there are more treatment options and a better chance for successful treatment.

In fact, research has shown a 25 per cent reduction in deaths from breast cancer among women who are screened through the Screening Mammography Program.

Sometimes, access to mammography can be an issue for those in rural and remote communities. B.C.’s mobile mammography service visits more than 120 rural communities across B.C., including more than 35

Steve Thomson First Nations communities annually, and performs about 10 per cent of the total number of screening mammograms in B.C. each year.

Earlier this year, our government unveiled a new digital mobile mammography program.

While similar to a film mammogram in that both use X-rays, the film is replaced by solid-state detectors that convert the image to a digital one. Digital mammograms can be beneficial for viewing dense breast tissue, most commonly found in younger women.

Now that digital mammography has gone

from the ‘emerging’ technology to the ‘standard,’ equipment used in the Screening Mammography Program is gradually being replaced with digital mammography machines as well.

Screening mammograms are available for women ages 40 and over, every two years.

If you are interested in making a mammogram appointment, you can go online to find a clinic near you—just visit www.screeningbc.ca/ breast and look for the ‘Clinic Locator.’ This will show local health care facilities offering mammogram services, as well as dates when a mobile unit might be in your community.

These programs and technologies are an example of how we are committed to providing health services and timely access to mammography breast screening to all communities.

The fourth annual event to commemorate the National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims, on Nov. 18, was well attended.

I didn’t do a count myself, but I am told that there were more than 100 people. The numbers have been slowly increasing each year, a trend that I hope will continue.

I am grateful, and thankful, for those beautiful people in my world who have been coming to this very chilly event, each year, to support me.

Road safety is important to these friends and co-workers, but it is their kind support of me that brings them out. Thank you.

Without reporting, the important road safety message doesn’t get out.

Join the RCMP and others who refuse to use the word “accident” when referring to a road traffic incident, because the word “accident” is suggestive of a random, unavoidable part of our world.

The RCMP who investigate crash after crash after crash are the most qualified to help us understand that the vast majority of crashes are entirely avoidable with simple common sense and attention to the task at hand.

The subtle use of language can have a powerful impact on attitudes and behaviours. How incredible if all the local news media might follow this important road safety protocol.

My granddaughter looks at me as if I used to have tea with T.Rex. I realize that I’m more comfortable with what I’m familiar with. I don’t object to learning new skills, or new ideas.

I enjoy conversations that light up my mind; I love reading books that stretch my mental boundaries. But I’d rather read them in English than Arabic; I’d rather snack on a doughnut than deep-fried cockroaches.

Why do things differently, if I don’t have to?

At the same time, though, I think some new things are worth making the effort. For a month or so, I’ve been struggling to learn to play the recorder. The tenor recorder, with holes about twice as far apart

as on those little plastic recorders everyone had in school.

It is not easy. I’ve spent a lifetime typing on a keyboard. My muscles expect one finger stroke to produce one letter. On the recorder, every note requires a co-ordinated combination of seven fingers and a thumb.

And only a sadist would devise an instrument where playing the next note up requires covering the next hole down!

So I’m having to retrain my muscles.

And I wonder sometimes if mental muscles need retraining too.

A spate of books recently have talked about the plasticity of the brain, its ability to build new neural pathways, perhaps to compensate for damage caused by accidents or illnesses.

Contrary to common

assumptions, the human brain does not retire at 55. It is just as capable of learning at 70 as it was at 20. Indeed, maybe more capable, because the prefrontal cortex, the part that makes decisions and sets goals, is still developing in many 20-yearolds.

But mental muscles can get into ruts, just like finger muscles. I don’t want to use examples here—they can too easily move the focus from the general principle to the specific. Let’s say that, in my formative years, idea A plus idea B led to conclusion C. As I mature, I think differently about A and B, but they still evoke conclusion C. Because those synapses connect automatically.

Sometimes, it’s as hard to train neurons to make different connections as it is to train fingers to play a new instrument.

But I persist. Because I think it’s worth it.

Mental muscles must be pried from ruts

of their publications?

Might this be an initiative that takes hold and makes our community a leader in road safety? I confess that I am feeling a touch of giddy optimism in that regard.

This and other small seeds of change have the capacity of germinating and growing to help change our driving culture to one where the act of driving is recognized to be an inherently dangerous activity, just like operating power saws and firearms, commanding a similar level of sensibility and undivided attention.

That’s all it will take to greatly reduce the unbearably significant ongoing losses arising from road traffic incidents in our communities.

Illegal dumping on Pelmewash/Beaver Lake Road KEVIN PARNELL When long-time Lake Country resident Vince Sedmak pulled into his regular spot along Pelmewash Parkway to try his luck at fishing last week, the first thing he noticed was an ugly pile of garbage thrown down an embankment.

A pile of wood, gyprock and insulation was strewn about on a steep bank leading down to Wood Lake, some of it in the water and all of it appearing to be remnants of a renovation, where someone had decided to use the parkway as a dump as opposed to traveling to the Glenmore landfill.

“This is supposed to be the start of our greenway,” said Sedmak on Friday, standing amidst the rubble, which he was going to clean-up himself and take to the dump. “They might as well have dumped that in my living room. I’ll grab some of my own stuff and make it a dump run.

“The worst thing about this is they have all these signs around (warning of fines) but I don’t know anyone who

has heard of someone being fined for dumping.”

Indeed, just metres from the pile of junk was a sign warning that dumping of trash was illegal, however Sedmak said he doubted people cared about that and noted he has seen plenty of illegal trash thrown about on Pelmewash and on Beaver Lake Road.

“Until someone gets caught they’re going to keep doing it,” he said.

Catching someone in

the act of illegal dumping could be the key to stopping it. According to Lake Country RCMP constable Ryan Putt, police can issue a bylaw ticket with fines levied going back to the district, or more serious charges of mischief, if they are able to prove illegal dumping.

But the key is in witness reports to give police something to go on.

“If we have a suspect and are able to locate them, then we can issue a

ticket,” said Const. Putt.

“But we need a suspect.

Either police roll up on it or someone calls us or bylaw. We would need a license plate or any identifying marks on the vehicle.”

To get a ticket issued, a witness would have to provide the details for police to prove the charge in court.

Owen Dickie said there is little doubt parts of Pelmewash are a mess and have been for years

with trash thrown about.

Each year the regional district targets Pelmewash as part of its community clean up project.

More recently Dickie said he drove Beaver Lake Road and noticed a bunch of garbage along the road. He said he will bring the issue up to see if there are ways the district could help, maybe with a dumpster located in certain areas.

But for Sedmak, who cleaned up the mess and will likely clean up after people again in the future, the issue is getting worse and will continue to do so until those who are doing it are properly punished.

“I lose my faith in humanity when I see this,” he said. “I know there are a lot of good people around but when you see this it just erases everything. You may remember that the provincial government gave us a grant of $35,000 to finally install a playground in Pioneer Park.

Well, it has taken a while due to an incredibly busy summer for the Parks and Rec Dept. but we have a proposed design. The playground will be targeted at ages 0 to 5 years as the school playground is designed

for 6 to 12.

It is planned that installation will take place in the spring of 2016 and be ready for use next summer.

RAIL LINE UPDATE

I imagine most people have heard that rail removal has begun on the Okanagan Rail Corridor. Work has begun in Kelowna and they are working north.

Removal of the rails

is phase 1 of the project. The next phase will be tie removal and cleanup. CN has until the end of 2016 to complete the removal/mitigation work, so it will realistically be 2017 at least before work begins constructing the trail. In the meantime, use the area at your own risk.

Signs still indicate Kaloya closes in winter An Oyama park is the source of a difference of opinions.

Lake Country council has passed a motion asking the Regional District of Central Okanagan to keep Kaloya Regional Park open year-round, while RDCO insists it already does not shut it down over winter.

“They have not changed signage. I introduced the motion to try and ensure it becomes policy,” said Owen Dickie, a Lake Country councillor.

However, RDCO states that policies have

been reviewed and most regional parks are now open year-round, with limited maintenance and services through the late fall and winter.

“Kaloya is one of those regional parks,” said Bruce Smith, RDCO communications officer.

“Reiswig Regional Park and Okanagan Centre Safe Harbour Regional Park in Lake Country are also now open year-round with reduced winter services.

Kopje Regional Park will remain open until there’s snow, but will close then as the parking lot will

not be plowed.”

Dickie says Kaloya is popular with people who want to walk and enjoy the outdoors at all times of the year.

“It’s a recreational facility and should be open all year-round.”

Dickie says there are other reasons to keep the gate to Kaloya Regional Park open.

“There’s no real turnaround space at the end of Trask Road (when the parking lot is off limits) so snow plows and garbage trucks have to back up along Trask and that’s not safe,” he said.

I did bring forward a motion for the installation of traffic calming to be included in the

budget this year. As it does not look like we will be getting possession in 2016, it was felt by all of council that any funds for Pelmewash Parkway in the next year should go toward the final design of the roadway and paths, so I withdrew the

motion.

The long and short of this is there will not be traffic calming (speed bumps/traffic humps) on Pelmewash Parkway in 2016 and with road redesign, it is unlikely there will ever be a need for them.

A Central Okanagan Regional District board director was given a temporary reprieve from facing penalties imposed by board members.

At a special meeting last week, Patty Hanson, Central Okanagan East area director, was to get an opportunity to defend herself against an accusation she divulged confidential information from an RDCO strategic planning workshop held in May. But the special meeting came to an abrupt end because Hanson did not have her lawyer present.

According to a report by board chair Gail Given, despite the workshop facilitator gaining consensus from those attending, including Hanson, that what was said at the workshop would remain confidential and Given reminding participants several times over the two-day workshop, Hanson subsequently told Okanagan Film Commissioner Jon Summerland that the board did not see the value of the commission.

In a subsequent letter to RDCO chief administration officer Brian Reardon, Summerland said he feared for his livelihood after hearing from Hanson that funding for the commission could be cut in 2016.

Given said the information Summerland relayed in his letter about what he said Hanson had told him was not only confidential but incorrect.

The special board meeting quickly went in-camera following receipt of a letter from Hanson’s lawyer. When it reopened, Hanson said she wanted her lawyer present. Neither she nor Summerland would speak to media.

No date has been set to reconvene the censure meeting.

Birch Creek was the host drum group and there was a special presentation by the Lake Country Native Association youth group.

Extreme Measures to Avoid the Dentist

Q: We're having a problem with our teenage daughter. She has decided that going to the dentist is something she is frightened about, and we've made two appointments for a regular cleaning which she has missed. Our dentist is not pleased at what he calls 'no shows' and won't book another appointment unless we pay up front. How common is this ridiculous behavior?

A: Actually, too common if you ask most dentists. Scheduling is a significant chore for our patients and for us. When someone misses an appointment they are preventing another patient from using that time slot. It's a juggling act between regular hygiene visits, treatment visits, and emergencies. We try to accommodate everyone and fortunately the vast majority of patients are simply great. The 'business' issue is that dental offices have a high overhead in doing business. It's nobody's fault, but it is an accumulation of rent, equipment purchases and leases, insurance, supplies, professional fees etc. When one considers the overhead % of a retail store, the average dental office is easily higher. When we schedule an appointment, we commit the chair time and staff resources. If someone doesn't show up, that is lost time forever – not unlike a restaurant with an empty table. That's why your dentist is requesting advance payment. To reduce that, we always remind all patients of an upcoming appointment.

How do they measure the speed of light?

I must admit that when I was asked this last week I was stumped! Fortunately my good friend Google had a few ideas.

The speed of light was thought for quite some time to be instantaneous – there’s no way for us to visually experience the lag, so infinite speed was a pretty good guess. Initial attempts to measure the speed of light were based on expected patterns of rotation for Jupiter’s moons and distant stars relative to the earth’s rotation. Secondary attempts were made using mirrors and after 1970, experiments using lasers allowed scientists to come up with even closer approximations. This precision was important because the speed of light is used in countless formulas, including our universal system of measurement (a “metre” is actually defined as the distance traveled by light in a vacuum over 1/299,792,448th of a second).

While this information may not help you to for care your eyes, I can be reasonably certain it will make you a big hit at this season’s Christmas parties.

Your daughter has developed dental phobia, which is common in about 30% of the population to some degree. Sometimes it is related to past experiences, or 'war stories' from well-meaning relatives. With modern techniques and medications for pain management there is rarely any substance to the fear. However, fear is irrational – like a fear of heights, fear of swimming etc. Sometimes we'll offer an office tour rather than a formal appointment just to make a patient comfortable. It usually results in the patient overcoming their fear and having their teeth cared for.

Just last year a teenage boy faked his own kidnapping in order to miss his dental visit. When he was 'rescued' from his hiding place, he claimed he had been abducted from a nearby town. He provided a detailed description of the abductor, right down to his scars, tattoos, clothing, and make of car. Composite drawings were created and distributed. The police spent an entire month investigating this 'crime', and only after extensive use of CCTV traffic camera footage did they realize none of it added up. Eventually, the lad admitted he made the whole story up to avoid his dental appointment. His parents are now dealing with an enormously expensive police investigation. At least your daughter didn't claim to be tied up in an abandoned fruit warehouse in the Okanagan Valley! If we can help, bring her in for a tour. It may work!

Are there any new studies showing hearing aids reduce risk of cognitive decline?

Hearing loss is the most common chronic health condition affecting older adults. Despite numerous studies showing the link between hearing loss and the risk of cognitive decline, less than 75% of people with hearing loss who could benefit from hearing aids use them. A new study may provide the wake-up call that prompts them to finally seek help for their hearing loss.

The study, published in the prestigious Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, found no difference in the rate of cognitive decline between people with no reported hearing loss and people with hearing loss who used hearing aids. By contrast, cognitive decline is significantly accelerated for people who have hearing loss and don’t use hearing aids.

One-on-one support for local children with autism KEVIN PARNELL It was eight years ago when life as Lisa Watson knew it officially changed.

A first-time mother, Lisa’s son Brett was three-years-old when she began to notice some differences in the way he was developing, compared to other children she was around.

“He had a lot of separation anxiety, a lot of anxiety regarding new situations and changes to

routine,” said Lisa.

“He didn’t make great eye contact, his speech was delayed and something that we noticed was he was quite fascinated by lights and fans, mores than other kids.”

Brett was in preschool in Kelowna at the time and teachers in the classroom noticed some red-flags in his behaviour.

Brett and his parents were referred to the Child Development Centre, where he

was eventually diagnosed with profound autism.

“At that time autism wasn’t as well known so I didn’t have anything to relate it to,” said Lisa. “I didn’t know anyone who had a child with autism.

“It’s more recognized now, I’d say most people are aware of it.”

In the eight years since his diagnosis, Lisa has become acutely aware of the disorder and how it will limit her son as he grows older.

never drive and will never live independently.

Today, Brett isn’t your typical 11-year-old, even though he might look it.

“It’s tough now as he’s getting older,” she said.

“To look at him, he looks like an 11-year-old kid but he’s not cognitively an 11-year-old.

“I’m starting to get more looks when I do certain things. I have to take him with me into the woman’s bathroom if there is no family bathroom and you feel like you have to explain yourself.”

Brett is anything but a typical kid. While neuro-typical kids are advancing to fist-bumps and high-fives and heading into the too-coolfor-school years, Brett still loves to be tickled.

In school, he was held back a year before he started Kingergarten.

Now in his Grade 5 class, Brett works on an individualized education plan towards a completion certificate, once he completes 12 years of school.

But he also continues to make improvements.

“He’s definitely made gains, his language has progressed,” she said.

“As parent you always want them to succeed and make bigger gains.

It’s hard. Sometimes you just want to be a parent.

“You don’t want to be their behaviourist or a teacher, you just want to do fun stuff that you would do with a regular kid.”

And now, thanks to a relatively new program in Kelowna, parents of children with autism are getting a chance to watch their kids take part in sports activities as opposed to being right at their side.

The Canucks Autism Network (CAN) has established itself in Kelowna and will begin registration on Monday for a series of programs including skating, soccer, basketball, fitness and more.

Kayla Ungaro is the regional coordinator for the Canucks Autism Network in Kelowna.

“What’s really unique about CAN programs is the amount of support we provide and the minimal cost to participate,” said Ungaro.

“We provide individualized, one-to-one support in an environment that is adapted to meet the needs of each participant while encouraging social interaction between participants.

“Parents can sign their child up for only $25 a year, which makes it accessible for all families with children on the autism spectrum.

“We want to provide every individual with autism with the opportunity to access programs that allow them to be ac-

tive, learn new skills and make friends, often for the first time.”

For Lisa Watson and her son Brett, taking part in the CAN program for the first time last year was a welcome respite from her daily struggles.

She watched from the sidelines as Brett received one-on-one help from an instructor.

“It was nice, I could just sit there on the bleachers and watch him and sit and chat with the other parents as opposed to having to be right there monitoring him,” she said.

“He’s really athletic.

He needs that physical outlet. It helps him regulate himself and makes him calmer.”

So while CAN provides an athletic outlet, Lisa has also taken matters into her own hands and is trying to help other parents who have children with autism.

She is the regional coordinator for the Interior for the Autism Society of B.C. and holds regular support meetings as parents get together to share stories and information.

“Parents need to reach out to each other because you can’t do this alone,” she said.

“You need someone to talk to. It’s very important. If I didn’t have the people in my support network I would have cracked a long time ago.

“Being able to talk to parents about simple things it’s nice because they get it.”

Bi- weekly fall yard waste pickup ends Monday, November 30 . That’s the last day in the Central Okanagan for the curbside yard waste pickup program until collection resumes again March 1st, 2016.

District of Lake Country’s sports fields are now CLOSED for the season Over the winter, District crews inspect sports fields to determine what repairs are required and perform annual general maintenance. Field closures are necessary and help maintain the quality of turf for the best possible playing conditions once spring arrives.

Lake Country: Origins in Time and Place

The Lake Country Museum and Archives and the Lake Country Heritage and Cultural Society have published a set of local history resources for Lake Country’s schools.

PUBLIC ART CALL: LAKE COUNTRY GREETING CARDS The Lake Country Public art Commission is inviting Lake Country artists to submit artworks for the 2015 Christmas card and Thank You cards.

Each year Christmas cards are sent by the Lake Country Mayor and staff to various other municipalities and correspondents; while Thank You cards are used throughout the year. An artwork from the submissions will be selected to be printed on these greeting cards.

Any type of painting, photography, or other medium can be used. The image can be of a subject of your choice, but if a landscape is used, it should be a Lake Country scene.

This project is open to Lake Country artists. An artist may submit more than one image.

Submit a digital version of your painting to the Public Art Commission by sending it to Sharon McCoubrey, Chairperson at sharon.mccoubrey@ubc.ca. You can also deliver photographs of the artwork to the Municipal Hall at 10150 Bottom Wood Lake Rd. The chosen image will be purchased by the municipality to become part of its permanent collection.
