Rev. Paula Ashby could not have had a stranger introduction to life as a United Church minister in Creston.

In August, not long after she had accepted “a call” to become the

church’s pastor, she was sitting in a provincial church workshop. Next to her, the B.C. personnel director got a text message on her cellphone and gestured to Ashby to follow her out of the room.

“She showed me the message,” she said. “I was just stunned.”

RCMP staff sergeant meets council, outlines patrol plans

RCMP Staff Sgt. Darryl Hammond formally introduced himself to Creston town council at the Nov. 10 regular council meeting.

Hammond, who has 35 years of service in the police service, assumed command of the Creston detachment in late August.

In his first appearance before council, he presented several maps of criminal activity in the area that, he said, will help plan police patrol activity. Hammond will present his first quarterly report to council in January.

He said that Creston gets lumped into radon concerns in the Kootenays because there are serious issues to the east and west. Creston has different geology, he said, and radon has not been found to be a significant danger.

He does, however, plan to order some testing kits that will be free to those who want to test their homes.

•A request that Creston’s street signs also include the names of pioneers will be referred to 2017 budget discussions, as the 2016 process is already underway.

•Councillors were informed about a leadership forum to be held in Richmond in February.

None immediately indicated an interest in attending.

•Intern Helene Miles reported on plans for a Youth Engagement Strategy committee celebration on Nov. 6 at the Sasquatch. Reports indicate the event was very well attended by youth and local officials.

•Finance director Steffan Klassen told council that the town’s budget is on track to be at or under spending projections, with the exception of the wastewater treatment plant, which has experienced significant challenges this year.

“This is a good snapshot of where we are at,” Coun. Joe Snopek told Klassen. “You do a good job on it.”

•Applications will be made under the 2016 Union of BC Municipalities FireSmart grant program for funds to treat wildfire fuel where Creston properties abut with forested land.

•A driver who was driving slowly on Highway 3 with his four-way flashers on reported being tailgated by a driver who repeatedly put his headlights on bright.

When the slower vehicle stopped in the 1600 block of Canyon Street, the other driver exited his vehicle and slapped the object of his fury on the face, then fled the scene.

Unfortunately, no licence plate number was recorded and police have no suspects.

•A vehicle was reported to be in a ditch on Northwest Boulevard.

•A search and rescue operation was organized when the driver of a vehicle that went off Highway 3 near Ryan Station Road was not located.

Police then learned that he had been picked up by a passing driver.

November 14 •A Vancouver Street resident reported receiving a fraudulent letter purporting to be from the Canada Revenue Agency. He did not fall for the threats.

•A complaint about slamming doors in an apartment on Northwest Boulevard was received.

•A loud party and bonfire were reported in the 1900 block of Erickson Road.

November 15 •A truck collided with an elk on Highway 3/95. The elk was thrown across the highway and into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

Renovations coming to emergency room Advance Staff

Major renovations are in store for the Creston Valley Hospital’s emergency room, with a tender for construction services released Nov. 12, said the Interior Health Authority (IHA) in a press release.

The cost of the project is expected to total about $650,000, made possible by bequeathals from the estates of Jessie Julia Hopper, Don and Dariel Anne Korczynski, and Blanche Oleskiw, currently held by the East Kootenay Foundation for Health (EKFH).

legacy gifts,” said EKFH executive director Donna Grainger. “These individuals and families have truly left an indelible mark in the quality of health care available at the Creston hospital.”

The goal of the redesign, said the IHA press release, is to improve patient privacy and flow, at the same time increasing efficiency and effectiveness of the space.

“Both physicians and nurses have been very involved in the planning process and we are very excited to see the project moving forward to the construction stage,” said Creston Valley Hospital site manager Carolyn Hawton.

The renovation will create a new triage and registration room, a central nursing station and a “fasttrack area for minor treatment of less acute patients.”

“We are so grateful for the strong community support for health care in our Creston community,” said Town of Creston Mayor Ron Toyota.

“It’s the generosity of our people that makes our community a great place to live.”

The tender will close this month, with construction expected to begin in January. The project should be complete in the spring of 2016.

The theme of gratitude comes to mind as I look back on last week, a workweek broken in half by Remembrance Day. On Nov. 9 I got an email reminder of the next morning’s Remembrance Day assembly at Adam Robertson Elementary School. For the past few years I have attended at the invitation of Grade 7 teacher Tanya Poznikoff.

Each year she produces a short play that her class presents at the assembly. The productions are consistently outstanding — beautiful to look at, lovely to listen to and are an invitation for the audience to meditate on what it means to families and communities when their members go off to war.

Later, I was surprised to see a post on Facebook from former CBC Almanac host Mark Forsythe about attendance at the cenotaph in Fort Langley for the Remembrance Day service. Forsythe visited Creston Valley Public Library earlier this year to promote his latest book, From the West Coast to the Western Front: British Columbians and the Great War. He tends to notice such things and commented that in 1998 there were two people at the cenotaph ceremony. This year, 17 years and the 9-11 horror later, the crowd numbered in the thousands, he said.

I had another appointment scheduled on Wednesday so I did not attend the cenotaph ceremony in Creston. Instead, I was out at Shukin Orchards, witnessing the sixth annual effort to send apples and gift items to Shamattawa, an isolated northern Manitoba community. It has become a truly

remarkable project, with organizers Muriel Buhr and Terrie Faulkner working year-round to collect clothing, notions and small gifts to send to the community before Christmas. Buhr’s interest

Lorne Eckersley was piqued years ago when she was invited to the home of friends whose RCMP officer son was visiting. In conversations over dinner he mentioned the challenges faced by the isolated and poverty-stricken community of Shamattawa, where he was posted. Items we take for granted, like fruit, he said, are luxuries in fly-in communities, where battered and bruised apples cost a small fortune at the town’s grocery store.

Buhr approached Ken Shukin, whose Shukin Orchard donates tons of fruit to food banks around the province, and the plan was hatched. She has woven together a remarkable team of volunteers, including trucking companies and airlines that transport the half-dozen or so tightly wrapped pallets to Shamattawa at no charge. I was genuinely moved to see the enthusiasm of the seven women, including three teenagers, as they sorted through items to create gift packs for each child in the 1,400-member

reserve. Next week’s Advance will include a story and photos as we work with Buhr and Faulkner to acknowledge the many who help in this most worthy project.

The Shamattawa effort is all the more impressive knowing it comes at the same time when much of our attention turns to the local food bank and the hamper fund, both of which fill huge gaps in the lives of the less fortunate of our friends and neighbours. Add to that the recent fundraiser led by Brandy Dyer for the family of the man who lost his life in a sawmill accident, and the efforts by Canyon-Lister Fire Department to aid the family that lost its home to fire last month, and one starts to get a better appreciation of this community’s endless generosity.

Finally, if I needed another reminder to feel gratitude at this time of year, I needed only to stare at a picture from Global News in Calgary. In it, my son and another RCMP member, both dressed in the traditional red serge, were casting salutes in front of the Memorial Drive cenotaph after placing wreaths on behalf of their fellow officers. I sent him a message later to tell him how proud I was, the more so because he also took our grandchildren, ages three and six. His response was simple, that it is important to him and his wife that the kids gain an appreciation for the countless women and men who serve their community and country.

He grew up in Creston, so of course I wasn’t surprised.

Tech enables access to knowledge

Since installing iPads in the children’s area earlier this year, many parents have expressed concerns about their use and availability. Here is one of the comments I received, which succinctly summarizes the main concerns: “Since you have added iPads to the library, we can no longer go to play and learn with our toddler because they are only interested in them. Kids already watch and play on iPads, computers and TV too much at home, and now it has taken over our library.

I understand the need for kids to learn about technology but they get enough of that everywhere else.”

The planning of the children’s area was completed over the course of more than a year by a committee consisting of longtime volunteers, staff, board members and community members.

We also invited input from a variety of local consultants. The topic of introducing computer technology to the area was contentious, and the decision was not taken lightly.

I was, and remain, a strong proponent of having computers in the children’s area.

The basis of my support is my commitment to the principles of intellectual freedom and equitable access to information. One of the statements in our library policies (available on our website) reads: “It is the responsibility of libraries to guarantee and facilitate access to all expressions of knowledge and intellectual activity, including those which some elements of society may consider

to be unconventional, unpopular or unacceptable. To this end, libraries shall acquire and make available the widest variety of materials.”

The Book Drop Aaron Francis Erecting barriers that inhibit an individual’s ability to access information is contrary to our mandate as a public library and something that we strive to avoid.

Barriers in this instance might include placing computers in adult areas where they may not feel comfortable using the computers, using computer furniture that is inappropriate for smaller people, placing computers in restricted areas where access requires staff intervention, and using Internet filters to block content.

This might seem like an overly abstract or intellectual response to a very practical problem, but it is important to keep in mind that public libraries are bound to certain values that, in some cases, transcend local community values (however those might be defined).

As a librarian, I make a point of visiting libraries whenever I travel to new places. In many communities

— especially larger centres — the issue of computers in children’s areas was debated and decided in favour of computers a decade or more ago.

In some communities, it remains a contentious issue.

As a parent of a young child who is both a regular library user and has access to various forms of technology at home, I sympathize with parents who see technology in the library as an unwanted distraction. The library’s mandate, however, is to serve all members of the community, many of whom do not have access to up-to-date technology at home.

Limiting a child’s exposure to technology and spending time together at the library are not incompatible.

However, it does place added onus on the parent to make decisions about their child’s exposure. This responsibility is not unlike that faced by parents at home, or teachers at publically funded schools. It is a function of a changing world, of which the library plays just a small part.

I encourage all parents to set limitations for their children. I also hope that all children will be given the opportunity to be inspired by the amazing world of stories and wisdom that our library provides through our storytelling programs, Summer Reading Club, and extensive, free collections of books and resources.

•Keep a positive attitude. It helps supply energy for remembering. Let go, relax, take the pressure off. Taking more control over our lives is important at any age, and keeping control is even more important as we grow older.

•Self-worth and self-acceptance — accept weaknesses, as well as strengths. Accept yourself as an individual. Self-worth controls outlook on life and affects memory. Be good to yourself. Put things in perspective.

Find alternatives. Grow, search, change and laugh!

OK, we’ve had our fun over the summer plotting, planning and staging photo shoots, we’ve pored over the photos reminiscing and imagining the titles, and very soon you will be able to get one (or two or…). We’re thinking of Ann Hepher and her family and join them in remembering Peter Hepher, who passed away at 94 on Nov. 6. As the 2014 citizen of the year, he was honoured then for the significant contributions he made to our community. He wrote columns for The Voice of Experience in the Advance and was a board member on the CrestonKootenay Foundation which benefits so many of us in the Creston Valley.

Clinic visit would waste less time To the Editor: (Re: “Walk-in clinic would lessen ER waits”, Oct. 29) I am in total support of Sheila Watson’s suggestion as to how a walk-in clinic would benefit Creston. It would definitely take away the long wait time for people with minor ailments and allow the doctors there to treat the emergency patients, which is what hospital emergency rooms are supposed to be used for.

We had lived in Creston for quite a while, and our kids went to school here. At that time we all had family doctors and dentists — no problem.

But we’ve been gone eight years and moved back one year ago, and things have certainly changed. We now both have doctors (my husband only in the last two months because a new doctor arrived)

and were informed Friday that we both have a dentist.

We lived in Castlegar, Cranbrook and Nelson prior to moving back here. There was no problem getting a doctor or dentist in these small communities.

Nelson, where we recently moved from, is a small, rural, isolated, community like Creston. But, there was no problem getting a doctor or dentist there, and Nelson also has two walk-in clinics to serve the community. We both had to use these walk-in clinics on a few occasions even though we had family doctors.

These walk-in clinics certainly were of great benefit and, as Sheila said, they are a first come, first served clinic — but you find out the wait time and then you can leave your name and come back later. It worked out so well for patients, as well as the doctors.

My experience with the hospital in Creston, when we first moved here, was not positive at all. I did not yet have a family doctor, so I had to go use the hospital emergency room.

About twice a year, I need to have my ears flushed out. My ear canals are a bit twisted and this is the only solution to clear them. The pressure from the

I understood it could be a long wait, and I accepted that. I finally saw a doctor and explained what needed to be done, a procedure that takes a few minutes. She refused to flush my ears.

Refused. I waited three hours.

She said she’d send me to a specialist. Are you kidding me?

I am 61 years old and I think I know what needs to be done.

I’ve had this done for years.

No, she refused.

My only option now was to go to Nelson to a walk-in clinic. That isn’t fair. So, I waited until the next day and went to the hospital again, and there was a different doctor on. I waited two hours this time. This doctor could see what needed to be done, and flushed my ears, releasing the pressure that was causing my earache and headache, and that was that.

It took a few minutes and all was well. So, now I had taken up two doctors’ time for a simple procedure that could have been treated at a walk-in clinic.

CDCC patrons kept up to date thanks to helpful CSRs

One of the behind the scenes happenings that you may not be aware of is the meeting between programming staff and our customer service representatives (CSRs) each time prior to the release

Typically they have a better idea on what is happening overall in the building than perhaps an individual department, and hopefully have most answers, or at least know how to get the answers, when a patron stops at the front. The small town advantage also plays a part as we may get to know you through your use of the facility as well as services, and sometimes can suggest a program or event that might pique your interest. One aspect I like about riding on trains is that I can enjoy the scenery while not having to be concerned about staying on the “highway”. Although the trains generally follow transportation routes followed by highways, they do divert at times through different landscapes. I remember once travelling from Banff to Revelstoke. Somewhere on the west side of the Rockies the train slowed down and I could distinguish individual plants. One that I will never forget was a healthy

I’m a collector of local art — not because I want to fill every available space on my walls and shelves, but because I like what the artists in our area are producing. And what better venue to view fine art than the Images art show and sale on Nov. 21 and 22!

Madama Butterfly running at library

Madama Butterfly is based on a story written in 1898 by John Luther Long. In 1900, a play by Peter Belasco was seen in New York and London, where Puccini saw it. His opera premiered Feb. 17, 1904, at La Scala in Milan, Italy, but rehearsal time had been inadequate and it was poorly received, but found success after Puccini revised the score.

I’m happy to say I own work by many of these artists. I learned a lesson about purchasing artwork several years ago, when I fell in love with a Phyllis Margolin watercolour at a Crawford Bay gallery. Thinking I was too poor to buy it, I left it

there, hanging on the wall.

Someone else has it now and is enjoying the autumn moodiness of it, the hues of gold and rust and the stormy Kootenay sky. I made a bad decision that day and I’ve always regretted it.

Try not to make the same mistake. Visit Images at Rotacrest Hall and open yourself up to the prospect of owing your own piece of original art.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the date of the next opera showing at the Creston Valley Public Library has been moved forward by one week and is now scheduled for Nov. 21. Now for the good news: Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini will still be shown.

Cio-Cio-san, or Butterfly, is Japanese and falls in love with an American Navy lieutenant, Pinkerton. A marriage ceremony takes place in Japan despite adverse warnings from the U.S. consul. According to Japanese law, Pinkerton can annul the marriage at will. Butterfly is 15 and her family renounces her. As she weeps, Pinkerton comforts her and Act 1 ends with a touching love scene.

Along with six others, Creston’s Robert Hynes and Penny Karpowich received a St. John Ambulance Lifesaving Award by the Alberta council for assisting at a Crawford Bay plane crash last year.

Gerhard and Links concert rescheduled SASQUATCH

Gerhard and the Missing Links are looking forward to their Nov. 28 concert (postponed from Oct. 24) at the Sasquatch as they present a familiar and eclectic mix of music spanning several decades and a few countries.

Well known around the Creston Valley, the upbeat and entertaining group is made up of Gerhard Link, Neil Ostafichuk, Mike Mitchell and Keith Brookfield.

Putting the Link in the Missing Links, Gerhard plays acoustic and electric guitars along with lead vocals, Ostafichuk picks up the bass guitar to cover the lower register, Mitchell playing percussion on suitcases, wavedrum and bongo cajon, and Brookfield lays some steady beats on the drum kit.

Tickets are available in advance at Buffalo Trails Coffee House, Kingfisher Used Books and Black Bear Books, and at the door, which opens at 6 p.m.; the Nov. 28 show starts at 7. Teens receive a special $8 rate only at the door.

Thunder Cats host and beat Leafs, Dynamiters

After breaking out of a losing streak last weekend, the Creston Valley Thunder Cats kept on winning this weekend, defeating the Nelson Leafs and Kimberley Dynamiters before losing 5-4 in overtime to the Fernie Ghostriders.

The five points helped the Thunder Cats remain in second place in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, their 30 points eight behind the Dynamiters’ 38, and six ahead of the Ghostriders and Columbia Valley Rockies, tied for third with 24.

The Thunder Cats started the scoring in Friday’s 5-1 victory over the Leafs with first-period goals by Jayden Smith, Alec Wilkinson and Carson Cartwright.

Sebastian Kilcommons scored a secondperiod goal and Jackson Bruce-Fuoco scored on a third-period power play before Nelson responded with a single goal with 4:10 remaining in the game.

“Overall, it was a complete effort,” said head coach Jeff Dubois.

He credited the efforts of goalie Brock Lefebvre, who blocked 32 Nelson shots, and the line of Wilkinson, Cartwright and Logan Styler.

“They combined for eight points between the three of them,” he said.

Saturday’s game was the second time the Thunder Cats had played against Kimberley this season, the first time resulting in a 4-0 loss. This time, they started with goals by Tyler Severson, Jayden Smith and James Severs (power play) before Kimberley responded at 5:49 in the first period. Dylan Hogue followed that with another Creston goal.

“They were in a long losing streak last time we saw them, and they just got their first win of season this weekend,” said Dubiois.

PCSS boys hosting E.K. volleyball championships SUBMITTED

A tournament victory in Fernie highlights tune-up events for the Prince Charles Secondary School Bulldogs heading into the senior boys’ volleyball zone finals this weekend in Creston.

PCSS topped a Fernie field that featured all their main East Kootenay counterparts, beating the host Falcons in a thrilling three-set battle in the championship match Oct. 24.

The Falcons’ lineup includes several former students of Jaffray Elementary/Junior Secondary School, which has been the PCSS boys’ primary rival over the past several seasons in the bantam and junior divisions, making the triumph especially sweet.

PCSS rolled into the final match with a second-best 4-1 record in the six-team tournament, avenging a preliminary round-robin loss to Fernie, which topped the standings at 5-0.

PCSS posted round-robin victories over Selkirk of Kimberley, David Thompson of Invermere, Sparwood and Elkford to earn a berth in the final.

The title is the Bulldogs’ only one of the season so far, but there were a couple of close calls elsewhere in the East Kootenay and hopes are high for the zone finals Friday and Saturday where only the David Thompson Lakers and Selkirk Storm stand in the path of a trip to Langley for the AA pro-

PCSS encountered both those opponents in other tournaments at Kimberley and Mt. Baker secondary in Cranbrook, with positive results. The Bulldogs reached the semifinals of both events before falling just short of the finals, and losing tightly contested, three-set matches in the consolation finals to decide third and fourth places.

In Cranbrook this past weekend, the Creston squad split its opening day matches on Friday, downing Fernie and being edged by the host Mt. Baker Wild in a pair of three-setters.

The trend continued the next day when all three of the Bulldogs’ best-of-three set matches went the distance, beginning with a victory over Selkirk that started with an opening set loss before they rallied to win two straight.

A promising semifinal start against Sparwood saw PCSS win the first set before dropping the next two, putting them in the consolation final against Fernie where they battled back from a 1-0 deficit to force a third set that ultimately went to the Falcons.

On Nov. 6 and 7 in Kimberley, meanwhile, the Bulldogs posted victories over both the Storm and Lakers en route to the semifinals, offset only by a close 2-0 loss to Mt. Baker.

Fernie beat PCSS 2-0 in the semifinals and Sparwood took a 2-1 victory to claim third place.

“I have always been active in the church,” she said.

“Mainly in the youth ministry, study groups and retreats.”

In 2000, she was ordained as a minister and soon afterward moved to Hazelton, which is situated on the infamous Highway of Tears, Highway 16.

Her connections in the government were useful, and she helped organize annual protests in which people would stand alongside the highway holding photographs of the murder victims.

“That got a lot of attention, and that’s all we wanted.”

Later, in Victoria, she would run a street ministry, working with poor and homeless people in the inner city. Most recently she and her husband lived in Comox and she worked parttime for a small congregation an hour’s drive away.

“My husband and I moved to Comox to care for my mother, who had Alzheimer’s,” Ashby said. “We moved in to keep her in her home as long as we could.”

In the small community of Cedar, where she worked weekends, she ran what she describes as “a little experiment.”

She and the congregation worked together to create a community that doesn’t need clergy.

“I guess you could say I was doing myself out of a job,”

she laughed. “That’s how I got to Creston!”

The call to take over as minister of Trinity United Church offered a certain level of comfort. For many years the Ashbys spent summer vacations in the area, where they pursued their love of fishing.

“The best bass I’ve ever had came out of Duck Lake!”

Small town life has an appeal.

“It’s a huge draw. It’s how I thrive.”

“There are many empty spaces, but none with a kitchen, which is more important than a pulpit!”

She was offered the choice of turning down the position here after the fire, but she didn’t even consider not taking the job.

“The fire? Maybe it’s why I’m here, to bring my sheep back into the fold,” she said.

“We are working together and developing trust — we are all in this together.”

While Sunday services are being held in the Anglican Church, the congregation has no place to call its own, no ideal venue to host its Wednesday

lunches, Bible studies and other activities that members enjoy.

The disruption in routines has not been easy.

“Everybody processes grief in different ways,” Ashby said.

It has been five years or more since the Ashbys came to the Creston Valley to camp but the sense of familiarity is welcome.

“I still recognize places.

Creston Valley Bakery is still here with its amazing bread!”

With a temporary office space close to the bakery on 10th Avenue North she is getting to know the congregation (and community) and its needs, but the church’s short-term future is far from clear.

Insurance companies are working to get the restoration going and remediation of items is expensive because there is asbestos in the building.

“Finding a (temporary) place is proving to be ridiculously difficult,” she admitted.

“We need to come together, but where? There are many empty spaces, but none with a kitchen, which is more important than a pulpit!”

While moving to a community with no church in place has its challenges, Ashby said she has no regrets.

“People have been really sweet and very supportive, and thank goodness for that,” she smiled. “People help each other out — that’s just what they do.

There is a kindness here that is not just a way of living, it’s a way of being.”
