Christmas tree lightings make for family-friendly outings It’s that time of year again, when Abbotsford lights up with Christmas cheer from one end to the other. Families are invited to experience some great events at Highstreet and classic traditions in the downtown core, both centred on the lighting of a giant, majestic tree. The Abbotsford Downtown Business Association began its annual Christmas Tree Lighting celebration in 1989. Each year since, families gather to see the 85-foot Douglas fir light up the night sky, adorned with white and red lights, and a big, beautiful white star on top. “My absolute favourite part is seeing families return year after year,” says Tina Stewart, execu-
tive director of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association.
“This event has turned into a multi-generational family Christmas tradition,” says Stewart. “People who enjoyed this years ago as children are now attending with their kids, and now, even grandkids. This is one of the true family-oriented Abbotsford traditions.”
“The faces of the kids, sitting on their dads’ shoulders as the countdown happens and the lights get flipped on - their faces light up as much as the tree does.” On Nov. 29 from 1 to 5 p.m., roads in the area will be closed to traffic so families can stroll through the downtown area’s shops, sample free hot chocolate and cookies, and enjoy entertainment at the Aldergrove Credit Union Community stage. Meet Santa and Mrs. Clause when they arrive around 2 p.m. and join in on the Christmas sing-along with a choir, Mayor Henry Braun, and council right before the tree is lit at 5 p.m.
Another “must-do” on the list of holiday experiences in Abbotsford is the third annual Highstreet Holiday Show on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 5 p.m., which includes a tree-lighting ceremony and Santa’s arrival. The towering tree on display is one of the largest Christmas trees in Canada, and will boast over 6,000 individually controllable tri-color LED nodes choreographed to holiday tunes.
This year’s pre-show at 4:30 p.m. will see performances by B.C.’s best marching band, talented dancers, holiday characters, Spandy Andy - a world-renowned entertainer known for his quirky persona - and of course, Santa Claus, who will be available for photos seven days a week starting Nov. 22. Tanya Curtis, marketing director at Highstreet, says one of her favourite things about the celebration is seeing the expression on children’s faces. “I love when the snow falls at the end of the show,” she says. “I guess I’ve ruined the surprise, but I love watching the little ones’ faces when the snow starts falling.” For the second year, Highstreet
