Christmas comes to Armstrong Light Up launches holidays in Armstrong Morning Star Staff

Armstrong wants people to Come Gnome For the Holidays.

That’s the play on words chosen as this year’s theme for the annual Home for the Holidays – Downtown Light Up and Parade, sponsored by the Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce, which takes place on Thursday, Nov. 26.

“It is expected that many businesses will jump on board and decorate their storefronts, windows and store shelves with gnomes of all shapes and sizes,” said newly elected chamber board president Fran Stecyk.

“Local businesses and organizations will be offering refreshments and in-store specials as well as contests and give-aways during the day leading up to the parade.”

The parade will leave the Village Cheese Co. at 6 p.m. and travel east on Pleasant Valley Road, then circle Spirit Square on Pleasant Valley Boulevard before heading back to the

Village Cheese.

Santa Claus will arrive at Spirit Square via transporation provided by Caravan Farm Theatre and will flip the switch to signal the arrival of Christmas to the community about 6:30 p.m.

“This will be an evening of fun for the whole family and it’s all free,” said Stecyk.

“In addition to the annual parade, there will also be the official light up, an opportunity to visit with Santa, road hockey and the cookie decorating booth.”

The evening also kicks off a weekend of holiday shopping in the community.

Gnome for the Holidays Morning Star Staff

Time to roam for the gnomes.

The Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce is presenting a Gnome for the Holiday scavenger hunt.

Participants use clues from participating sponsors to find and take pictures of 12 gnomes located throughout the city.

“People can get scavenger hunt instructions and their first clue to the location of a gnome at the chamber office,” said

Patti Noonan, the chamber’s executive director.

The contest runs from Nov. 26 to 4 p.m. on Dec. 11.

Once participants have found and taken pictures of all 12 gnomes, they can bring their photos to the chamber office.

A total of 12 prizes will be awarded.

A list of the participating sponsors can be found at the Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce.

Annual tradition returns

Festival of Trees ROGER KNOX Morning Star Staff

Armstrong’s Festival of Trees continues to grow.

Started in 2013 as a Centennial event in the year of the city’s 100th birthday, the Festival of Trees became popular enough for the organizing Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum and Art Gallery to bring it back in 2014.

Last year, entries included one from the RCMP, which had wives of RCMP members from across the country sending ornaments to decorate on the tree.

“We haven’t heard back from them to see if they are participating this year,” said event spokesperson Sherry MacFarlane.

“But we have a couple of new entrants this year: the IHA Pleasant Valley Manor Recreation, Quilting for You and Armstrong Quilters.”

Businesses and organizations that would like to take part decorating a Christmas tree

can pick up an entry form at the museum.

Entry fee is donation of a silent auction item which raises funds to be distributed amongst the participating non-profit organizations.

Decorating days at the museum are on Dec. 4, 5, 6 and 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The trees will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily from Dec. 9-23, and again from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 27-30.

“People who come to view the trees will be encouraged to vote for their favourite,” said MacFarlane. “The winner will be awarded the People’s Choice honour.”

Last year, the following entries won ribbons: People’s Choice 1st – Blue Hotel Ladies Coffee Group; People’s Choice 2nd – Township of Spallumcheen; People’s Choice 3rd – RCMP Spouses Coast to Coast.
