Each year on Nov. 11, much of the world stops to remember those allied soldiers who died and continue to die fighting for their countries, and with each solemn ceremony there emerges a new generation of Canadians old enough to be able to comprehend the sadness and loss that conflicts inflict, and that their world would likely be a very different place had thousands of men and women not sacrificed their own lives in defence of future generations’ freedom.

Grade 6 and 7 students from the Greenwood and West Boundary elementary schools descended on the Rock Creek Cemetery recently for a fall clean up, comprised of weed trimming, lawn mowing, pruning and headstone sweeping.

Eighteen volunteers left the cemetery looking neat and tidy for the winter, and the schools have pledged another day next spring for a similar effort.

Participating students will receive a contribution towards the 6/7 field trips to Victoria and Vancouver next June, and are always on the look out for additional opportunities to help fund their excursions.

Individuals or groups with suitable projects for the students are asked to contact Jennifer Macfarlane at 250-446-2846.

The board of trustees for School District 51 (Boundary) met for their regular meeting Nov. 10 at the school board office in Grand Forks. The board heard several good presentations from staff, particularly about the new curriculum.

Grey talks about projectbased learning

Matt Grey, a science teacher at Grand Forks Secondary School (GFSS), gave a presentation to the board about his experience last year teaching a project-based learning section on water systems.

The project-based learning idea allowed the students to work much more independently and discover answers themselves, he explained.

Grey said that the engagement by the students at first was high but dropped over the six weeks of the program. He also said the students would have benefited more if they learned it at an earlier age.

At the end of the six weeks the students showed off their projects to the mayor and senior staff at the city as well as the superintendent (Kevin Ar-

gue) and director of learning (Doug Lacey). Grey said it was clear during the presentations which students put time in and worked hard and which ones didn’t.

Superintendent’s report Superintendent Kevin Argue gave his month end report for October. Argue said he managed to visit all the schools in Grand Forks as well as Christina Lake Elementary (CLES) and Boundary Central Secondary (BCSS).

He was able to observe Terry Fox runs at both Hutton Elementary and BCSS. Argue also spoke about the district planning for the new Framework for Enhancing Student Learning. He said the district plans and timelines for the new framework are to be made public by March.

“Planning has begun in conjunction with the Boundary District Teachers’ Association (BDTA) for supporting teachers as they transition to the new K-9 curriculum in September

2016,” said Argue. He added that to that end, teachers will have two additional non-instructional days that the Ministry of Education placed into the 2015-16 calendar.

Board approves field trip The board of trustees approved in principle the GFSS Global Citizenship Club’s proposed field trip to Ecuador during spring break of 2017.

The cost for the trip would be approximately $4,000 per student.

School numbers up In her report to the board, Jeannette Hanlon, SD51 secretary-treasurer, said the number of students in the Boundary has gone up by 18 in the latest head count since Sept. 30. BCSS added two students; Hutton added eight; while Perley and CLES each added one.

Hanlon also said that the district has added 32 EA (educational assistant) hours, which is equivalent to five positions.

She also reported that all irrigation systems at the schools have been flushed and are prepared for winter. Crews are continuing to pick up as many leaves as possible before the snow hits.

Why contribute to a spousal RRSP? If you have a spouse (married or common-law) you can contribute to a spousal RRSP. Use of a spousal RRSP is a method of income sharing at retirement. The idea is to build two pools of savings, one for each spouse that will produce similar income streams at retirement. The taxes paid on the two incomes will likely be less than those paid if the income were to be taxed in the hands of one spouse in a higher tax bracket. The more income that can be generated by the spouse in the lower tax bracket, the better the tax savings. Income-sharing is particularly beneficial when one spouse will have substantial income from pensions and other sources, and the other spouse will have little or none.

If you and your spouse have significantly different incomes and/ or pension plans, you may want to contribute to a spousal plan. You will still receive the RRSP tax deduction for your contribution. Your total RRSP contributions (personal and spousal) are subject to your yearly RRSP limit, the same limit that applies to your RRSP. Since a spousal RRSP belongs to your spouse, the money you invested in it also belongs to your spouse and you have no legal say about it.

Although your spousal plus personal contributions cannot exceed your annual RRSP limit, the amount you contribute into a spousal plan does not affect how much your spouse can contribute to an RRSP. He/she can still contribute up to their yearly limit as well.

Is it risky to invest in a spousal RRSP? What if we divorce, or if my spouse dies? In most situations, if you divorce, RRSPs and pensions will be split. If one spouse dies, RRSPs can be transferred tax-free to the remaining spouse provided that the spouse was named beneficiary of the RRSP plan.

Depending on your situation, a spousal RRSP can be an effective way to reduce the amount of tax you pay in retirement. Speak to your advisor to help you decide if a spousal RRSP is right for your family.

Let them ski!

As this week’s article featuring excerpts from essays penned and pictures drawn by West Boundary Elementary School students attests to, people in this area are disappointed and extremely frustrated by the apparent non-opening of the area’s beloved Mt. Baldy ski resort.

The history of the mountain, as far as recreation is concerned, is not that long, opening to skiing in 1968.

Described as a “modest” hill, it is, nevertheless, one of the many reasons residents enjoy living in the West Boundary, and its closure, while not devastating (especially since it has been somewhat the norm in recent years, due to either financial hardship or poor weather) certainly impacts the level of winter pleasure locals enjoy. Schools, especially, are hard hit by Baldy’s closure, either having to cancel regular ski days or transport students to Big White or Phoenix, both of which are considerably further away and in the case of Big White, much less cost-effective. Add to that the impact it has on the Baldy villagers and their investments, then this closure is a rather messy affair.

So what’s the problem? Of course, it starts with money, but it also seems to be getting unusually greedy. The receiver, which is comprised of one man and his company known as G-Force Realty, appears, according to Baldy Capital President Fred Johnston, to be reneging on an agreement that led Baldy Capital to ceremoniously announce only a couple of weeks ago that it had purchased the resort and would officially begin operations this winter. Johnston and his associates appear to be completely in the dark as to G-Force’s about face and can only hypothesize that greed has gotten the better of the receiver, who, incidentally, is the only party to make money out of this apparent stalemate. The receiver’s sole creditor, a Seattle-based individual, must continue to pay his representative regardless, and this ‘non-operational’ mode also costs the Baldy investment group money. A strange scenario, to say the least.

Why doesn’t the creditor/receiver simply allow Baldy Capital, as it did last winter, operate the resort on a “temporary” basis until the finances can be equitably resolved?

That way, not only would the receiver continue to benefit from Baldy’s existence, but so too would the creditor, the investors and, perhaps more importantly, the residents of West Boundary and the Southern Okanagan. After all, it is for them that this “modest” but picturesque mountain should once again be resuscitated and allow smiles to return to the faces of all those children.

On Friday, Nov. 20, Boundary C 4H Club will wrap up its year with Awards Night at the Bridesville Community Hall.

Club meetings and activities have ended for the season and members have completed project record books, which they have submitted for assessment.

Students issue plea for Baldy to open Grade 6/7 students at West Boundary Elementary School were recently asked to write short essays and draw pictures to reflect their experiences at Mt. Baldy ski hill, aimed at letting those in control of the resort’s fate know how much the mountain means to them.

The following are excerpts from those student essays: “Mt. Baldy means a lot to me and my family and friends. I learned how to ski at Mt. Baldy and have many wonderful memories of skiing there. Mt. Baldy is not just about skiing and snowboarding but about hanging out with friends and having fun as well.”

“Our school is very close to Mt. Baldy and for the past two years we have not been able to go and have fun.

When it was open our school got to go skiing three to four times a year. It was so much fun!”

“If you open Mt. Baldy I will go skiing every weekend and week day when school’s not in. I will buy passes and a shirt and I will wear it most every day and I will buy hot chocolate until I feel sick of hot chocolate. Every time I come up to Mt. Baldy I make a new memory. Every winter Mt. Baldy is my number one priority. I love skiing and snow boarding. I love Mt. Baldy!”

Beautifully orchestrated by Greenwood Legion president Bob Walker and his club associates, along with members of Grand Forks Pipes and Drums and the RCMP, Principal Bo Macfarlane and faculty members from all schools, the service was a poignant reminder for most of how fortunate we are, not only to live in Canada but also to have enjoyed complete freedom throughout our lives.

There were strong musical performances by BCSS students and teachers, as well as a moving rendition of Glyn Lehmann’s To Be Free by the elementary school students. The rear of the gymnasium housed a display of student designs illustrating various aspects of the two world wars, impressive testaments to how much thought the students had put into their preparation for the event.

A haunting bagpipe arrangement of The Lament was performed flawlessly

by Gordie Jones which, combined with two minutes of silence, brought tears to the eyes of many that morning, and those same emotions were poised to carry over into the next day’s ceremonies.

At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the Kettle Valley Cenotaph was surrounded by more than 200 people.

It was a crisp, sunny morning, ideal for an outdoor ceremony, and, again, the attendees ranged in age from nine to 90, one of the oldest being 93-year-

As he had for many years, Normandy survivor Lautard stood proudly to attention before the Canadian flag as it was lowered to begin the ceremony, which included a perfectly-recited rendition of In Flanders Fields by a group of Young Adventurers, a heartfelt speech of hope

by Pastor Rick Steingard and the traditional laying of wreaths by a parade of groups and individuals.

As is their tradition, the McMynn family provided some hot beverages and sweet treats for the kids and youngat-heart, and the large crowd left the 91-year-old cenotaph with a heightened reverence for veterans and active soldiers alike, and an increased appreciation for life as we know it.

Only a few kilometres away in Greenwood, an equally moving ceremony was taking place in front of the historic building now home to City Hall. When the building was constructed in the late 19th century, the second Boer War was about to break out in South Africa, while the “War to End all Wars,” the cessation of which gave birth to Remembrance Day, was nearly two decades away.

Presided over by Bob Walker and Grand Forks Pipes and Drums, the ceremony was watched by dozens of spectators, many of whom made their way after the formalities to the Legion for refreshments and more music.

It was, all in all, another memorable Remembrance Day in the West Boundary.

Van Kuik scores two firsts in competition

Boundary C 4H Club member Marijka van Kuik scored big at the 2015 provincial photography competition, earning two first place finishes for entries in the “People” and “Animals” categories. Van Kuik, a 15-year-old Rock Creek resident, is the only member who practices the art of photography in her club and has perennially fared well in that category.

Her flair for composition and overall camera technique have resulted in many outstanding photographs, both in and out of 4-H competition.

This year 2015 the Phoenix Foundation (Grand Forks) graciously donated $1000.00 toward the Rock Creek and Boundary Fair Association’s ‘Shade Shelter’ project.

The fairgrounds in Rock Creek have always grown, shifted and changed over the years to meet the many uses and functions of the property. Over the years, many trees have had to come down as they became hazards; which has left a great deal of exposed area. Since the grounds are a popular destination for fair-weather gatherings - weddings and reunions, not to mention the Rock Creek Fall Fair – it is always a risk for Events to keep people comfortable in whatever weather. To satisfy the need of a significant shade/rain shelter, the Rock Creek and Boundary Fair Association prioritized a centrally located shelter to be constructed this year, funded by the 50/50 draws from RCFF 2014 and thankfully, grant money from the Phoenix Foundation.

Every dollar given toward the RCBFA is fully appreciated. Being an integral part of the Boundary communities and their cultural livelihood, the fairgrounds are also a patchwork of buildings and structures, developed over many years, with something always in need of upgrade. Balancing the operation of the facility with hosting an annual Fair as well as attending to these upgrades is always a challenge – thank you so much Phoenix Foundation for supporting our Association this year (as well as several in the past), we now have a lovely shade structure that will be around for many years to come – and was well used this Fall Fair 2015!

While the demands of her new position continue to be very challenging, Gee has familiarized herself in depth with the formal aspects of a regional director’s responsibilities and is now able to turn more of her attention to more creative aspects such as applying for grants and helping organizations find gaming money, which is a component of the job she derives great satisfaction from.

“When I first took office I was flooded with requests for grant-in-aid money,” she said, “but I had no idea how to be fair with the disbursement of funds, so the first thing I did was take a look at a five-year history of grants-in-aid to see where the money had been going. Then I started to formulate my own set of rules as to how to disburse it; otherwise I could have spent it in the first two months of the year!”

Now, when an organization or individual applies for a grant, Gee requires them to submit an overview of their current financial profile, which is not only useful in guiding Gee’s decision-making, but also can prove beneficial to the society or organization. She works closely with communities to help identify their primary

As for the Rock Creek fire that brought the summer to a grinding halt for many, it saw Gee, as regional director of the impacted area, join hundreds of volunteers and professionals to ensure that those impacted by the blaze were cared for immediately and thereafter.

She helped establish the Rock Creek/ Westbridge Fire Needs Committee, which has been working tirelessly to establish the needs of those directly affected by the fire and ensuring that rebuilding efforts are executed in a timely and logical fashion. The committee expects to be working with the fire recovery for the foreseeable future.

Currently, Gee is focused on a number of regional issues, including working with the Trails to the Boundary Society, which now has an agreement in place with the province regarding maintenance and usage of the West Boundary section of the Trans Canada Trail.

Gee would like to see the trail utilized primarily by non-motorized vehicles, though is more than willing to help develop sections of the trail that would also be accessible to motorized vehicles on their way to nearby ORV trails. She hopes to help fund the two entities equally, noting that both cyclists and ATV riders are important contributors to the area’s tourism economy.

When asked which of her characteristics make her ideally suited for the role of area director, Gee said matter of factly, “My persistence!”

That desire to “get things done” has made Gee’s first year in office not only a productive one, but also very memorable, and she is looking forward to an equally constructive 2016.

Greenwood elementary school students and teachers paid a visit to a special place on a recent Monday morning.

Enjoying a brisk walk into the city centre, the group made its way to the Greenwood Country Store, where proprietor Francis Braun invited them to write their wishes on â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Wishing Wall.â&#x20AC;?

The wall was originally installed on the facade of the

nearby Motherlode Bistro by store managers Dave Edmondson and Adele LaRiviere as part of a global movement that has seen over a thousand such walls erected around the world. Upon their departure from Greenwood, Edmondson and LaRiviere felt it fitting that the wishing wall should remain in the city and decided to make it their gift to the community they had grown to love during their brief residency there.

Braun showed much emotion during her description of the wallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s origin and Edmondson and LaRiviereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dedication of the installation to their parents. Amongst the most popular of wishes from the students was a plea for the end of war.

The wall will be a permanent fixture at the store, and Braun invites everybody to spend a few minutes to enjoy the wishes of others as well as sharing their own.

Throughout the last year an informal partnership known as the Boundary Habitat Stewards (Christina Lake Stewardship Society, Granby Wilderness Society, Boundary Invasive Species Society, Grand Forks Wildlife Club, RDKB and BC Forest Lands and Natural Resource Operations) has been active on many restoration and habitat enhancement projects across the region. These include habitat enhancement for the endangered speckled dace in the Granby, Kettle and West Kettle Rivers; slope stabilization and fish habitat protection at Sion Cemetery west of Grand Forks; wetland restoration at Boothmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Oxbow Provincial Park; and a native plant nursery and lakeshore restoration at Christina Lake.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve also been building our capacity for restoration by bringing in restoration expert David Polster to teach a course on riparian restoration at Selkirk College.

There so is much more to share about the last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; come on out on Wednesday, Nov. 25 to the McArthur Centre in Greenwood for dessert at 6:30 p.m. and an informative evening of presentations and conversation (7 - 9 p.m.).

River of Dreams an eclectic mix

Company on Saturday evening to present an enticing production that celebrated John Hibberson’s Midway Little Theatre the river as an integral part of human exteamed up with Nelson’s Allegro Dance istence. Inspired by the poetry of passionate fly fisherman Michael Delp and the plight of Boundary’s own Kettle River, River of Dreams offered Delp’s insight into the secret life of rivers through a series of dance and spoken word performances.

final performance of the original piece, which had been presented to a packed house at Nelson’s Capitol Theatre on Nov. 3. Thao Atkinson, Emma Geen, Shelby Condon, Amber Petrie and Van Atkinson also worked alongside former Boundary Central Secondary School student Mondula, now a Nelson resident, who demonstrated an impressive stage presence and promises a bright future as an actor.

The soundtrack was an eclectic mix of electronica, ambient and western hoedown music and the stage design was simple yet

effective, allowing for seamless segues from scene to scene.

Despite coming in at a relatively brief 40 minutes, the production was generally well-received by the audience of around 100, though some attendees did find it a bit too esoteric for their taste.

The polar opposite of Hibberson’s last production, Nana’s Naughty Knickers, a much more traditional stage play, River of Dreams had a lot going for it in its dance and music, though perhaps fell a little short in the area of entertaining dialogue.

Actors and dancers from Midway and Nelson came together for an eclectic presentation entitled River of Dreams last Saturday. Based largely on the poetic observations of avid fly fisherman Michael Delp, the piece was a co-production of the Midway Little Theatre and Nelson’s Allegro Dance Company.
