There is too much life left to live to watch Tom suffer like this anymore. “So surgery is booked for November and we will just have to deal with the financial consequences of it as best we can. I would do and give up everything to see him healthy and happy again,” said Christina. For the past six years the

couple have tried different therapies and clinics, including the Mayo Clinic, without success. “Thousands and thousands of dollars were spent on naturopath, chiro, massage, acupuncture, botox, hyperbaric chamber treatments, myofascial release treatments, trigger point injections… you name it we tried it,” said Christina. Then further research by the couple led to a Calgary university student, Kristina Waldmann, who suffered identical symptoms as Tom does, but has found the answer. “I was in pain all the time, severe headaches all the time, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, visual problems. I had to stop going to school, to work, to my volunteer position. I was stuck at home in pain — not able to do anything,” she told CBC News recently.

Afghanistan veteran fights to stay alive after being hit by truck By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

A 29-year-old Abbotsford man who survived the battlefields of Afghanistan is now in hospital fighting for his life after being hit by a pickup truck on 232 Street Thursday evening, Nov. 12. Just before 5 p.m., newlywed John Lowe was on his way to visit his grandmother in Langley in his old pickup truck — a vehicle that was a replacement for his other old Dodge, which had recently been stolen. The truck doesn’t have a working gas gauge, so Lowe unwittingly ran out of gas while taking the 232 Street exit. There was a torrential downpour at the time.

According to the gofundme page “John Lowe’s Recovery Fund,” he phoned his dad, Ray, who said he would pick up a gas can and meet him at the truck. When his dad arrived there was no one in the truck, but he did see a large contingent of emergency vehicles and lights flashing closer to the Chevron gas station. According to Langley RCMP, it appears Lowe was walking to the gas station when he was struck crossing the road. He was hit by a one-tonne GMC Sierra truck, travelling north on 232 at 72 Avenue. The driver of the truck stopped immediately and tried to help. Lowe suffered multiple inju-

ries, including internal bleeding, two breaks in his left arm, several broken ribs, a ruptured spleen and kidney and a bruised aorta. He also suffered a concussion. He underwent surgery on the weekend and remains in Royal Columbian’s ICU in critical but stable condition. He is unable to have visitors at this time. In just two days, more than $6,500 has been raised for the young couple who “don’t have a big income stream.” Lowe is a member of, and advocate for, Wounded Warriors of Canada and has spoken out publicly about his own experience with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and about the culture of

silence that exists in the army surrounding the condition. In 2013 and 2014, he completed the veterans’ Big Bike Ride from Paris to London, raising $4,000 for Wounded Warriors. His efforts were featured in the Cloverdale Reporter last year. He was born and raised there and recently moved to Abbotsford. Lowe and his mother, Shere, were part of a fundraiser for Wounded Warriors, put on by Langley Rotary Club last fall. Police are urging anyone who witnessed Thursday’s crash to call them. “At this time, there are no independent witnesses,” said Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly Largy. Call police at 604-532-3200.

RCMP need help to piece together shooting Aldergrove Star

Langley RCMP are seeking public assistance in piecing together events from early Wednesday morning that sent one man to emergency with multiple gunshot wounds. Shortly after 1 a.m. on Nov. 11, a man arrived at Langley Memorial Hospital with gunshot injuries. Police believe it is related to a vehicle incident that occurred 10 minutes earlier. At the intersection of Springbrook Drive and Glover Road, a white Dodge Avenger

crashed through a concrete barrier and came to rest on the east side of the railway tracks, adjacent to Glover Road. A dark-coloured vehicle, with an unknown number of occupants, pulled over near the crash site. Several witnesses told police that a South Asian man said he witnessed the crash, however he left the scene in a minivan before police arrived. The driver of the Avenger was seen walking away from the crash site. Lower Mainland police dog services then located a 36-year-old

One of Surrey’s most prolific offenders and a Langley woman were arrested at a Langley home where a significant amount of stolen mail and ID were seized. During the first week of November, Surrey RCMP received several complaints about mail being stolen involving a white Range Rover at various mailboxes throughout Surrey. Residents involved in Block Watch also said the SUV was being driven erratically through neighbourhoods. Police began an extensive investigation and on Nov. 5 were able to locate the unoccupied stolen Range Rover at 192 Street and 54 Avenue, said Surrey RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Scotty Schumann. The outpouring of humanitarian aid and care for Syrian refugees across the nation is both heartwarming and, to some degree, disconcerting. I mention the latter only because we will be facing a housing and employment conundrum for so many people, all at once. It is all well and good to provide government-assisted accommodation funding for individuals and families, but the amounts are equivalent to social assistance, and anyone already receiving that will clearly tell you $375 a month ($785 for families) doesn’t go very far in the Lower Mainland housing market. That said, there is a huge push for people to ‘donate’ a bedroom or vacant basement suite to assist refugee resettlement, but the number of those coming here in the next couple of months – 3,000 by year’s end – is and will be somewhat overwhelming. Additionally, among that number are many children, with Surrey alone expecting approximately 500 kids to enter its schools. Like Abbotsford, Surrey is one of the few school districts in the province that is growing, and already facing challenges to find classrooms. Vancouver, conversely, has a reported 19 schools facing

Editor: This prose poem formed itself in my mind as I experienced the Remembrance Day event on Fraser Hwy. The solemn clouds rolled by over the still slowly growing crowd of quiet watchers. Pool is ‘deserved’ here Editor: Aldergrove has asked for an indoor pool many times over. The community spoke loud and clear through surveys, open Township forums, via delegations and letters into the paper. The Township did not listen and we are getting an outdoor pool. We did not ask for a new arena, that was the Township’s idea. From my understanding the hockey community out here loves the existing rink. We also did not ask for a lazy river and outdoor spray park etc. We simply asked for a proper sized, functioning indoor pool, something that Aldergrove does not have. Would all the other “stuff” be nice? Certainly! But not at the price of skimping on the pool. To appease us we have now been told we may get a “cover” over the pool and perhaps a heated deck. This is the Township’s attempt at making us happy, or at least quiet. I can tell you we will not be happy for the seven months of the year when it is cold and rainy. This is not supposed to be a resort pool that is used once or twice in the winter as a novelty; this is supposed to be our go-to-yearround-fitness facility. I can promise you people will not be using it in the cold months and this will lead to the Township closing it to save money and thus making it a seasonal pool from May to September. The pool needs a proper deep end that will accommodate deck diving as it a component of swimming lessons, plus other deep water activities. Our teenagers won’t be interested in the pool without a diving board. All this is not in the current plans. This outdoor pool is not money well spent. How about putting the lazy river, spray park, outdoor kiddie pool and all the other “goodies” on hold for the time being, and put the money towards properly fully enclosing this pool with walls and a roof? At this point we’ll even take the roll-up garage door style walls like Walnut Grove has. When the Township presented the final plans at the Kinsmen Centre many people were told by councillors and staff this pool would be fully enclosed in the near future when the funds became available. That appears to have been a lie. There are three more Township budgets before this pool is due to be finished, I would say that is more than enough time to allocate the $7-million shortfall to pay for a proper indoor pool. Begin construction now with the design plans reflecting room for it to be an indoor pool upon completion. Make room for the necessary electrical and HVAC now. Please do not waste taxpayers money on this ridiculous outdoor pool. Aldergrove has waited far too long for this pool; now give us what we deserve. Stephanie Watson

Operation Red Nose launches 20th year of safe ‘dry’ rides home Aldergrove Star

The 20th annual Operation Red Nose kicked off its annual campaign in Abbotsford on Friday. Peter Fassbender, the Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development and Minister Responsible for Translink, ICBC program manager Aileen Shibata, Abbotsford acting mayor Coun. Patricia Ross, MLA Darryl Plecas, Operation Red Nose executive director Guylaine Beaupré and Rudy the Rudolph all made appearances during the event at Seven Oaks Mall.

ICBC was recognized for its 20th year involved in the Operation Red Nose campaign. From Nov. 27 to Dec. 31, more than 50,000 citizens hit the road to help provide the population with an additional option to get home safe. Abbotsford is one of 13 communities in B.C. to receive the service. The 2015 campaign also marks an important chapter in the history of Operation Red Nose, since the organization will reach the milestone of 2 million rides on Nov. 28. This number represents the number of Canadians who have made the responsible

decision to plan a safe ride by calling upon the Operation Red Nose service to get home safe. “This year marks 20 years that we’ve been a proud partner of Operation Red Nose in B.C.,” Shibata said. “We know how much this program helps to keep our roads safe during the holidays. Marshall Cronkhite passed away peacefully in his 90th year Nov. 10 at the family’s pioneer farm in the County Line area of Aldergrove. Marshall was born here shortly after his parents, brother John and foster sister Gladys (United Empire Loyalist stock from the Maritimes) settled on the farm in 1925. Marshall and John (as seen in photo) served in WW2 and Marshall received his agrology degree from UBC, established a successful dairy farm and with wife Jennifer raised five children. He is also survived by his younger sister Eunice. Marshall was a gifted raconteur and storyteller with a gentle sense of humour. Rest in peace, Marshall. -Kurt Langmann, Editor

The Aldergrove Kodiaks came out strong and kept it up for a 5-3 win over the Delta Ice Hawks Wednesday, Nov. 11 at Aldergrove Arena. The evening started on a sombre note, with a Remembrance Day dedication service for the fallen of war, as well as a memorial for the late Aldergrove resident and community volunteer Harry Hunt. The Kodiaks out-played and out-shot the Hawks in the first period but it was the Hawks who scored twice to put the visitors up 2-0 at the start of the second. However, the second period was all Kodiaks as they came out on the attack and were rewarded with a 5-3 lead at the start of the third. It was a hat trick night for

Kodiak Derian White as he scored the Kodiaks’ first two goals and got an assist on the third. Kodiak Eric Callegari was not far behind as he scored the next two goals, with the second being an unassisted power play breakaway goal on the Hawks’ net. This earned White and Callegari the first and second stars of the night. Kodiak Brandon Dolby closed the night’s scoring with the final goal. Kodiaks’ assists came from Erik Bocale, Kyle Bosko, White, Davin Padgham and Matt Oliver. The Kodiaks almost doubled the Hawks’ shots on goal with a total of 39-20. Naythan Lange served in the Kodiaks’ net that night. The result puts the Kodiaks at 20 points after 19 games (9-8-0-2).

Trailing 2-0, there was no blistering half-time pep talk from the Brookswood coaches. Instead, the players themselves spoke about what needed to be done. The Bobcats were trailing the Aldergrove Totems by a pair of goals heading into the second half of the senior boys AA soccer championship final which was played at Brookswood Secondary on Nov. 12. The ’Cats and Totems had both already secured a spot at the upcoming B.C. provincial high school championships, but the Brookswood players were intent on capturing the Valley banner, which would be a first in the school’s history. And the majority of the players were in Grade 11 last year when Brookswood lost in the Fraser Valley finals.

“They all talked about really wanting to get a banner and not give up hope,” said Brookswood’s Ian Jackman, a parent-coach alongside Dwayne Brunsch. “They talked about how they could do it and off they went. “They were a lot stronger in the second half.” After Aldergrove’s Alex Jang put the visitors ahead with a pair of goals, Brookswood had some chances to get on the board prior to halftime, but each time the Aldergrove keeper was up to the task, always in position to cleanly grasp the ball. “We told the team (at the half), aim for the posts and not the goalie and that is exactly what happened,” said Jackman. Kenta Tsukui pulled Brookswood even with a pair of goals — one of which saw him knife through five defenders — and Damon Schmidt

gave the ’Cats the lead for good with less than 15 minutes to play. ’Cats keeper Tyler Jones also came up with a huge pair of stops to keep Aldergrove off the board in the second half. “Brookswood is a very good team and they carried the play in the game anyways,” said Aldergrove coach Brian Hunter. “Our structure in our system lost a bit of its shape allowing for Brookswood to find more quality opportunities. “Having said this, we had three excellent opportunities to get the winner in the last 10 minutes and two of these opportunities went wide and then in the other chance, the goalie made a great play.” Brookswood was the fourth seed for Fraser Valleys while Aldergrove was seventh. The ’Cats beat No. 5 Archbishop Carney 3-2 in the quarter-finals and

then stunned the top seed Abbotsford Traditional Titans 4-2 in the semifinals. The Titans had gone 5-1 during the season, outscoring the competition 26-4, including a 6-0 victory over Brookswood. Aldergrove beat No. 2 Pitt Meadows 2-1 and No. 3 Burnsview 3-2 in penalty kicks. The Langley Saints were also in the mix at Fraser Valleys — they went 5-1-0 during the regular season, which included a 2-1 win over Abbotsford Traditional — but the sixth-seed lost 3-2 in penalty kicks to Burnsview in the quarter-finals. Langley stayed alive with a 2-1 win over Pitt Meadows but lost 5-2 to the Titans to be eliminated. Both Brookswood and Aldergrove now gear up for the provincial championships, which run Nov. 23 to 25 at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.

The Fraser Valley Thunderbirds split a pair of games with the Cariboo Cougars in major midget hockey action. The Fraser Valley Thunderbirds boarded a team bus this past weekend for the long trip north to Prince George for their scheduled back to back series with the Cariboo Cougars. Game 1 of the series was played on Saturday evening with the TBirds appearing to have left their legs on the team bus, dropping a 4-1 decision with Kyle Davis scoring the lone goal for Fraser Valley in the loss. The Cougars significantly outshot the TBirds, givng TBirds goalie Paul Tucek all he could handle. However, despite the final score it certainly would have been a lot higher if it wasn’t for the efforts of Tucek between the pipes. Game 2 of the series found the confident Cougars up against a much different TBird team, a team with emotion and drive which turned out to be the deciding factor in the TBirds’ 5-4 win. After a stint in World War II as a rear gunner in the Air Force, Marshall attended UBC and earned a degree in Agricultural Economics. He worked for both the provincial and federal governments as a farm management specialist. Then in 1966 with a growing family, Marshall returned to farming. He believed it was “the best way to raise a family”. Marshall is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jennifer, their five children: Andrew (Kiyoko), Janet (Peter), Duncan, Brian, and David, eight grandchildren, and sister, Eunice Ellis. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21st at 2:00 p.m. at the Kinsmen Community Centre in Aldergrove (26770 29th Ave.) In lieu of flowers, donations to First United Church Community Ministry Society (First United) would be appreciated.
