Local family looks to make a difference after personal tragedy Smiles Thru Lindsey Foundation aims to help those battling depression

A

local family is using tragedy as a powerful tool for hope for those suffering from depression.

Rick and Cindy More lost their 22-year-old daughter Lindsey on Sept. 20th. She took her own life after battling severe depression for a number of years.

“She lit up a room when she walked in,” said Cindy.

“She really did.”

Rick added, “People that met her for the first time were touched by her. She had that impact and she loved to laugh - she just loved people.”

During holidays for example, Rick said his daughter would often dash out with a plate of food for someone who was on their own. “That’s the way she was.”

The couple recalls Lindsey’s passion for flying and she was weeks away from getting her private pilot’s license before her death. “She had done three solos, so we were pretty proud of her,” said Rick. “She loved being in the air.”

Lindsey had an impact on the community. At her funeral between 900 and 1,000 people attended.

“People were really shocked that a person coming from a close family that had this beauty and the world in front of her, could do something like this. I think that is what is so impactful right now,” said Rick, adding there is often a stigma attached those suffering with depression.

Cindy added they knew their daughter struggled, but they did not realize how difficult that struggle was.

“She was always joking and she was always doing everything she could for everyone else. She loved to laugh so we thought she was okay. I would ask how she felt and she

Cassie Hall photo would say, ‘Oh, pretty good. There’s someone going through the same thing and we talk a lot, so that really helps.’ And I thought, oh good. She wanted to make sure we weren’t worried about her,” she said.

It was in December 2014 when Lindsey approached Rick and said she needed help. “She came home and she was just crying and she said, ‘Dad, I need help. I tried to kill myself’,” he said.

“She told me that night that she had been suffering since high school and we had no idea - no idea - it was a burden that she took on her own and I think many do because there’s that embarrassment - that stigma that society has put on these people.

“WE WANT TO DO LINDSEY JUSTICE BECAUSE SHE WAS SO BEAUTIFUL.” CINDY MORE “As a father - what a shock.”

Lindsey went to a local agency but felt turned away because the first question she was asked was how she was going to pay for the help. “She was demoralized and she was told it was a phase she was going through - twice she was told that,” said Rick.

After Lindsey’s death, Rick and Cindy have decided to turn their personal tragedy into hope for others. Together with help from community members, they have developed the Smiles Thru Lindsey Foundation via the Red Deer and District Community Foundation which is geared towards providing financial help to young adults, teens and children dealing with depression.

“We don’t ever want to see anyone turned away who seeks guidance,” said Rick. “Lindsey wanted to make a difference and I think this really is going to start making a difference.

I think we have to stop and say enough is enough.

cine moving forward.”

Cindy added, “We want to do Lindsey justice because she was so beautiful.”

A few fundraisers have already taken place with overwhelming results in support of the Foundation.

Bo’s Bar & Grill held a fundraiser which raised $1,000, the Canadian Brewhouse, where Lindsey worked, held a fundraiser which raised $50,000 and Electric City Tattoo raised $2,800 for the Foundation as well.

A number of business people have also contributed upwards of $600,000 over five years towards mental health initiatives in Central Alberta.

Rick and Cindy noted how grateful they are for the community’s support

- some of it from people they don’t even know who have been willing to open up their hearts and share their own stories with them as well. Rick has also met with local politicians in hopes of raising awareness in the community.

“Since this has happened we have had so many people contact us who have told us they suffer from depression - and some of them have said we are the first people they’ve told,” said Rick. “We have to change our views on each other - hiding things isn’t going to change anything.

It’s everyone’s issue.”

City council to debate capital budget next week Budget totals $161 million and includes 157 new projects in 2016

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS Red Deer City council will enter deliberations for the 2016 capital budget next Tuesday.

The capital budget review begins at 9 a.m. on Nov. 24th in Council Chambers.

A $161 million budget will be considered by council for 2016. Council will also consider the 2017-2025 capital plan valued at $1.38 billion.

“We developed this upcoming budget with the understanding there is some economic uncertainty, namely long-term provincial and federal funding which both play a major role in our capital project reality,” said City Manager Craig Curtis. “The 2016 capital budget did not see a major increase overall compared to 2015 as per council’s guidelines.”

In 2015, Red Deer reached more than 100,000 citizens. With this growth, needs change, and these ever-changing needs are reflected through multiple projects in the upcoming budget and capital plan, Curtis added. “The range of needs are incorporated into the projects being proposed which ensures our foundational infrastructure is sustained, new projects are being considered in current and future growth areas, and new amenities that Red Deerians want become a reality.”

With Red Deer being the next largest urban municipality to the major metro areas of Calgary and Edmonton, it is important to focus on sustainability planning and building the City’s future through council’s vision, said Curtis.

“We know that the larger centres are facing major infrastructure issues and they require funding, but we are taking a proactive approach to ensure that as we grow, we stay on top of potential issues and our capital budget reflects this,” he added. “We need to position ourselves to ensure we receive our fair share of provincial and federal funding.”

On Nov. 24th, council will consider the recommended projects in the 2016 capital budget, multi-year projects with start dates in 2016 and projects from 2015 in need of additional funding. Council will also have the opportunity to approve the 2017-2025 capital plan in principle giving administration the ability to plan future projects while providing the flexibility to adjust projects based on community needs and funding sources.

Some of the major projects that council

will discuss include enhancements at Great Chief Park in preparation of the 2019 Canada Winter Games. Proposed enhancements include construction of a patio area for the existing concession, installation of artificial turf to provide a longer playing season and enhanced level of service for football, construction of a national level long track speed skating oval and construction of a spectator/ athletes’ building that includes change rooms, meeting/flexible space and a media tower. These proposed enhancements are pegged at $3 million.

Council will also consider additional funding for the relocation of Emergency Services Station 3 and Station 4. Previous approvals were given for the relocation of the stations, which will see Station 3 located on the northeast corner of Lees Street and 30th Ave. and Station 4, which is currently located in Deer Park, move to Timberlands. Additional funding of $1.6 million for Station 3 and $1.1 million for Station 4 will be considered.

Another item up for approval is preservation of the CPR pedestrian bridge. The capital request of $255,000 will be used for repairs and $3.4 million will be used

to remove the lead paint and re-coat the bridge.

The Memorial Centre preservation project is also up for approval. Council will be asked to approve $1.08 million in 2016 and $1.1 million in 2017.

Council will also consider a proposed riverwalk in the Riverlands District. City officials have said the Riverwalk is a critical piece of the overall development of the Riverlands District and is at the connection point of Alexander Way, Riverland’s main street and the Red Deer River. Council will consider $1.7 million for the Riverwalk project.

Enhancements and preservation to the River Bend Recreation Area are also items in next year’s capital budget. Council will be asked to look at approving $3.5 million of enhancement work such as parking lot expansion and revitalizing Discovery Canyon as well as $2.1 million of preservation work to the area.

Another item up for council approval is improvements on transportation throughout the City. Council will consider $5.1 million for Phase 3 of Alexander Way, $12.2 million for southeast sector transportation improvements, $7.6 million for

crown paving, $6.6 million for 67th St. corridor improvements and $5.7 million for roadway reconstruction.

Previously approved capital projects that will continue through next year include the Red Deer Arena replacement.

Construction of the new arena is slated to begin in 2016 and wrap up in 2018.

The Gary W. Harris Centre for Health, Wellness and Sport is another previously approved project. Located at Red Deer College, through tri-party agreement with the City, the Canada Winter Games Host Society and RDC, a contribution will be made to the College over a 10-year period totalling $11.5 million. Initial work on the site has begun and construction is expected to begin in early 2016.

The Red Deer Airport Expansion Project was also previously approved. The project will include expansion of the runway which will allow larger aircraft to land.

The project will cost $9.5 million with funding provided by the City and the County who will each contribute $1.75 million and the provincial government who will contribute $6 million over three years. efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Murder trial on hold pending fitness assessment

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS A murder trial that was set to take place in Red Deer’s Court of Queen’s Bench has been adjourned pending a fitness assessment of the accused.

Christopher Fleig, 30, who was charged in what police have called a gang-style execution, was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years in June of 2012.

Fleig was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the 2009 shooting death of Brandon Prevey, 29. He was also charged with conspiracy to commit mur-

der against Nick Soto but that charge was dropped during the trial.

In 2014, Fleig appealed and was awarded a new trial, although his original conviction and sentence was upheld pending the outcome of the second trial. He remains in custody.

The second trial was supposed to begin in Red Deer’s Court of Queen’s Bench on Nov. 9th. But concerns over Fleig’s fitness to stand trial were raised by his lawyer Allan Faye. Fleig was reportedly not taking his medication and a fitness assessment was ordered.

On Nov. 13th, a teleconference was held to hear results from the fitness assessment. Dr. Ken Hashman, a psychiatrist at

the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatric Centre, deemed Fleig fit to stand trial as he had begun taking his medication again.

The trial was then to commence on Nov. 16th, but again, Faye raised concerns over Fleig’s fitness to stand trial. Fleig, who sat in the prisoner’s box for the discussions, could be seen mumbling to himself throughout the proceedings. “Despite my belief things would go ahead, we are no better off than we were last Monday morning,� said Faye. “When I spoke to Mr. Fleig on Friday, he seemed better, but the concerns that I had last Monday have resurfaced. Mr. Fleig has told me he has not been taking his medication and he has made statements and

his behaviour has caused me concern that he is not fit to stand trial.�

A 30-day fitness assessment was ordered and Fleig will undergo that assessment at the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatric Centre under Hashman’s care.

Meanwhile, Prevey was shot and killed in what police say was a gang-style execution while sitting in his vehicle in the Inglewood area of Red Deer during the early morning hours of April 5, 2009.

While testifying on the stand in the initial trial, Fleig denied he had any involvement in the murder and was in the area at the same time as the shooting to visit a friend a couple of blocks away. efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

BAIL DENIED FOR MAN ACCUSED OF HIT AND RUN Bail has been denied for a Red Deer man who has been charged with offenses related to a hit and run that caused a woman’s death in Penhold earlier this month.

Jason John Powell, 40, of Red Deer, has been charged with a number of criminal offences in relation to the death of Chasity Holman, 41, of Red Deer. It is alleged a Chevrolet Impala driven by Powell struck Holman near the Penhold Multiplex at Penhold in the late afternoon of Nov. 5th.

Holman was later pronounced dead at hospital. An autopsy was completed on Nov. 6th confirming death was due to trauma sustained in the collision with the car.

Powell has been charged with operating a motor vehicle on Waskasoo Avenue in a manner that was dangerous to the public and thereby causing the death of Holman, operating a motor vehicle while his ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol/drug, operating a motor vehicle knowing that operating that motor vehicle was involved in the death of Holman, did fail without reasonable excuse to comply with a demand for a breath sample made to him by a member of the RCMP and operating a motor vehicle while disqualified from doing so by reason of an order pursuant to Section 259(1) of the Criminal Code. (The RCMP can confirm that Powell was convicted of (Drive over .08) Section 253 (1)(b) of the Criminal Code on June 19th at Red Deer and was issued a driving disqualification).

The RCMP can confirm that Powell and Holman were known to each other but will not be speaking to the nature of that relationship.

Powell remains in custody and will return to Red Deer Provincial Court on Dec. 9th.

OPINION Unrest grows in the wake of Paris attacks Last Friday the news of a major terrorist attack in Paris shook the world yet again. These kinds of reports are unfortunately becoming all too common these days as violence seems to more prevalent and what some are turning to for the answer.

ISIS ultimately took responsibility for the seven coordinated attacks in the French capital which saw gunmen and suicide bombers target a concert hall, a major stadium, bars and restaurants - all simultaneously. The attacks saw 129 people dead and 352 people injured.

France has now declared war on the Islamic State in Syria and is aggressively attacking that area. Russia has also joined the fight in retaliation for the downed Russian charter jet on Oct. 31st which killed 224 people.

As well, we learned last week that tragedy also struck Beirut, Lebanon. On Thursday 43 people were killed and 239 people were injured after suicide bomb-

ing was reportedly carried out by an ISIS cell.

These attacks seem to be escalating and creating much unrest and fear in the world.

Before 9/11, citizens in the western world rarely, if ever, heard of this type of extreme attack or violence. That has been slowing changing and many now live in fear.

Also stemming from these attacks is the question surrounding the Syrian refugees set to come to Canada by the end of the year. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged during his campaign to bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2015.

Social media is abuzz with calls to either halt or significantly slow the process of allowing the refugees into Canada.

Trudeau has said the commitment has, “In no way weakened our resolve to ensure first and foremost that Canadians are kept safe.”

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall re-

leased a letter to Trudeau asking him to halt the plan over safety concerns. “I understand that the overwhelming majority of refugees are fleeing violence and bloodshed and pose no threat to anyone.

However, if even a small number of individuals who wish to do harm to our country are able to enter Canada as a result of a rushed refugee resettlement process, the results could be devastating.”

Here in Red Deer, we have also heard concern and support from citizens regarding the issue. It is a hot topic on social media where some believe our community should not welcome any refugees at this time. Among their concerns are the speed in which the process is happening, the fact that our province’s economy is in a recession and jobs are scarce and the lack of affordable housing options in the City. Of course, there are many in support of welcoming refugees into our community as well.

MP Earl Dreeshen posted a message on

his social media in response to community concern.

He said in part, “It is clear that the process currently being carried out is being driven by a desire to fulfill a political promise. We need to pay attention to the seriousness of the situation and not overburden our organizations tasked with settlement by insisting on unrealistic deadlines and targets chosen arbitrarily. Insufficient screening is not in the best interest of Canadians and certainly not in the best interest of the legitimate refugees we are settling.”

For the refugees settling into our community, life will not be easy by any means.

Unfortunately some are painting all of them with the same brush. We hope that our community can be welcoming and approach the issue in a balanced and fair manner. It is a very complicated situation and we hope that those refugees who are looking to make Red Deer their home can feel a part of the community.

What I gained from those who have nothing to give Prior to last month, I had no real idea what poverty and struggle looked like.

I thought I did - I grew up poor, volunteer with Red Deer’s homeless population and have seen the effects of a lack of resources.

By our standards.

This October, I joined 21 other Albertans on a humanitarian trip to the Dominican Republic where my eyes were opened to what a poverty-stricken, third world country really looks like.

We travelled to the north coast of the island and volunteered with a feeding program in a poor village called Ascension. We saw people who eat a single meal a day or sometimes nothing at all. Clean water doesn’t come out of taps, and the standards of living are less than sub-par.

Regardless of these issues, I met some of the

MENDONSA happiest people I’d ever met and that is what the true impact of this trip was.

Poverty is the trap of not being able to better one’s situation. These people genuinely do not have the resources - money, clean water, ease of access to food, medical care, proper housing - to better their situation.

But for everything they have, they are thankful.

The people I met in the Dominican Republic were some of the most beautiful, kind and proud people I’ve ever met. Children would come up to you,

grab your hand and take you to their home to introduce you to their family.

They were always proud of their homes, their families and their pets (often chickens). Many of the adults were more reserved, but also very genuine in their actions.

The language barrier was the least of our worries. Our group stumbled through interactions with children and adults, both parties usually ending up smiling or laughing due to the confusion.

In spite of the difficulties these people are facing, there is an element of community unparalleled to anything I’ve ever seen in Canada.

Children, teens, adults and elders all coexist with respect for each other and a reliance on each other.

The people in the village were often taking care

of each other’s children, moving seamlessly between houses and shops and were always waving or shouting greetings at those around them.

One of my best memories was on our last day in the village, where I asked my new friend Wilson to take me to his home so that I could photograph his family. I was welcomed by hugs, shown his prized pet chicken and his pigs and was offered water to drink. His family put on nice clothes for me to photograph them. I was welcomed with such kindness that I nearly cried.

It was amazing to see such a spirit in a village that is so obviously full of struggle. Ascension is actually one of the luckier villages - missionaries built houses for the people and the feeding program and baby program run by

our friends helps to take care of the babies, children and elders. Most villages don’t have this kind of additional help, so the people there are in an even worse situation.

In North America, we praise entrepreneurial spirit. We have associations and meetings and think entrepreneurs are gifted, ambitious leaders.

In the Dominican, the only way people can make a living - a very poor but passable living - is to create a business or service. Until someone pointed that out to me, I wouldn’t have realized. But after, it was all I could see.

There are over 400 villages - bateys - like Ascension across the Dominican.

These villages were populated with Haitian migrants during a booming sugar cane industry - most of which was bought

out and closed by North American corporations seeking to gain a bigger profit. To add insult to injury, most of the sugar cane fields were burned to keep the people from re-building the industry.

The result is thousands of unemployed, underprivileged people in poor living conditions.

But the other result is a community spirit unlike anything I’ve ever witnessed. There is a beauty and simplicity to the way of life down there because most people are incredibly grateful for what little opportunities they have.

The biggest thing I brought home with me from this experience was gratefulness for my wonderful life, and I am thankful to have been shown that in a personal, humble and impactful way. kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

BUILDING PERMIT VALUES Public sector projects drove growth in the value of building permits in October 2015. Construction on the new St. Joseph’s High School, scheduled to open in September 2017, has begun in the City’s northeast, with an estimated value of $30 million. In addition, the City of Red Deer issued a building permit for a new, 122 unit assisted living facility, worth an estimated $21 million.

October 2015 residential building permit values and numbers are below those of October 2014. Commercial and industrial building permit values are also lagging behind the 2014 values

for October. Although the total number of all permits issued so far this year are down, the value of those permits – at $223 million – are up in 2015 compared to a value of $167 million for the same period in 2014.

TREE TRIMMING NEAR POWER LINES The City of Red Deer’s contractor will begin work next week to trim trees that are encroaching onto City owned power lines.

The City has awarded the contract to ArborCare Tree Service Ltd. for work on behalf of the Electric Light & Power (EL&P) department.

Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on the faces of millions of men around the world each November.

The organization’s vision is to change the face of men’s health by getting men to grow moustaches for the month while raising funds and awareness for men’s health issues, including prostate and testicular cancers.

Moustache Masquerade – the fourth year celebration from the local Movember Red Deer committee is again holding their annual Gala.

The 2015 Gala takes place at Fionn MacCool’s on Nov. 28th, doors at 6:30 p.m.

The work started on Monday and includes the trimming of City owned trees as well as customer owned trees to maintain clearance distances from both high voltage and secondary voltage power lines as set out in the Alberta Electrical Utility Code.

Work is expected to be complete by the end of February.

The City ensures tree limbs are trimmed away from power lines in order to maintain public safety and reliability of electrical service. Property owners are responsible for keeping trees trimmed back from low voltage service wires near their residence. The EL&P contractor will not be responsible for these lines.

The purpose of this bylaw is to facilitate the subdivision of 0.53 hectares (1.31 acres) from the adjacent property (Lot 2) to be consolidated with Lot 1, creating a 1.41-hectare (3.48-acre) parcel.

The Central Alberta Refugee Effort (C.A.R.E.) is happy to share that it has received financial support from the RBC Foundation to continue the offering of a new ESL (English as a Second Language) program in Red Deer.

The objective of this Outreach ESL program is to increase English language skills amongst immigrants in our community who are facing multiple barriers and are therefore not able to attend the regular ESL programs. In particular the program is aiming at immigrant women of pre-school children with lower literacy levels, with a need for childcare and barrier free transportation.

The program will be offered in partnership with relevant community partners, starting in spring of 2016.

READING PROGRAM RECEIVES TWO BRAVO AWARDS The Red Deer Catholic Regional School division ‘READS’ Summer Reading Program won two BRAVO Awards (Award of Excellence and Best in Class) at the Canadian Association of Communicators in Education (CACE) Conference last month.

The Award of Excellence is for communication programs in the field of education that receives 90 – 100% and the Best in Class recognizes the best execution of the program.

Officials say the program was developed to suit all middle and elementary school students’ needs.

The main goals of the program are to promote reading growth by getting books into the hands of students, increase access to books to eliminate summer reading loss and to have school libraries open during the summer months.

“With reading as part of their summer reading routine students are continuing to build literacy skills throughout their vacation. The summer reading program also builds community and family relationships,” said Librarian Debbie Robinson at Holy Trinity Catholic School in Olds.

This past summer, over 16,000 books were distributed in 11 schools.

Red Deer Lights the Night this weekend

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS A festival set to happen this coming weekend will kick of the holiday season in Red Deer.

Red Deer Lights the Night will take place in downtown Red Deer on Nov. 21st. The festival, which runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in City Hall Park and on Ross Street is presented

by Stantec and hosted by the City of Red Deer and the Downtown Business Association.

“We are thrilled to be hosting this event this year as it’s become a fan favourite for Red Deerians,” said Annette Scheper, community program facilitator for the City of Red Deer.

“There’s something about those twinkling lights that sparks a wonderful holiday spirit in kids and adults alike.

“We do kick off the holiday season, we get the community together and we have a great time. It’s a great family event.”

The event will include the officially lighting of City Hall Park and Red Deer’s biggest Christmas Tree at 5:15 p.m. followed by a fireworks show.

Families can take in the live entertainment, a winter market, crafts and games for the kids, free hot chocolate and popcorn, and of course, a visit from Santa.

“People can expect similar events to what has happened in the past. We haven’t overly changed anything, but we have added some more components to it to up the value of the

event to our community,” said Scheper, pointing to the fact the festival has previously been run by the Fesitval of Trees. “The DBA is planning on bringing in a 30’ by 60’ warming tent that will include a stage and a beverage service as well. There will also be a quaint winter market that will run and there is a Santa booth that is being created and it is one of our environmental components where 95 per cent of it is reduce, reuse, recycle.

“Santa will be on site from 4-6 p.m. so all of the kids will have a chance to visit with him. And we’ll have the Overdue Blues Band who will be performing some lovely Christmas songs that everyone can enjoy.”

After the event City Hall Park will be lit up until about Jan. 11th and Red Deerians are encouraged to take in the site as nightly from 6-8:30 p.m. there will be a light show timed with music.

“It is a lovely walkabout in the park and the tree on the corner of City Hall Park will have this light show going on so you can enjoy some Christmas music over the holidays and after Christmas it will switch to some classical music to keep us going through the frivolities of the winter,” said Scheper.

C.A.R.E. launches new exhibit at Red Deer Museum

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS It’s a special year for the staff and volunteers of Central Alberta Refugee Effort (C.A.R.E.) as the organization is marking 35 years of serving the community.

To that end, a special exhibit is currently being featured at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery entitled ‘C.A.R.E. Welcoming Immigrants to Central Alberta for 35 Years: Part One - Early Beginnings’.

The exhibit runs through to Jan. 24th.

“We’ve had a longstanding collaboration with C.A.R.E.,” said Lorna Johnson, executive director of the Museum during the exhibit’s official opening this past weekend. “For this exhibit, we are featuring the stories of some of the Vietnamese refugees who came to Red Deer in 1979.

This was also really the impetus for the formation of C.A.R.E. “All of the incredible work that C.A.R.E. has done over the years was really the result of those first refugees who came here.” ‘Early Beginnings’ tells the stories of two individuals’ journeys - Sherry Diep and Muoi Ngo as they left their homes to escape the communist regime of Vietnam, according to a press release. In the late 1970s, Red Deer, along with many other communities in Canada, responded to the plight of the ‘boat people’ - fleeing the aftermath of the Vietnam War. “Between 1975 and 1980, over 56,000 Vietnamese immigrants came to Canada.

Many were sponsored by local churches, community groups and organizations.

The Red Deer Ministerial Association asked for assistance in helping these ref-

ugees resettle in Red Deer and area. The culmination of work from organizations and individuals came together on Aug. 13th, 1979 with the formation of C.A.R.E.S. - the Central Alberta Relief Effort for Sponsorship.”

In early 1980, the organization became a registered non-profit society and at that time, the society changed the name to the Central Alberta Refugee Effort (C.A.R.E.)

“In Red Deer they were met by an employee from Manpower, given a basic introduction to the City and taken to a hotel for a one week stay until they rented a small downtown apartment. They were given a small amount of grocery money and one month’s rent before being left on their own.

them. One of Muoi’s goals is to always be a good citizen.”

Meanwhile, the work at C.A.R.E. continues - the organization is a thriving hub offering all kinds of programs, services and supports for those new to Central Alberta.

To that end, they provide a wide range of programs and services to folks settling in Central Alberta from English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and translation and interpretation services to an immigrant youth program and immigrant men’s and women’s support groups.

Ultimately, it’s about helping people feel comfortable with the new aspects they may find they have to deal with across North American culture.

Another popular program is the Connecting Newcomers program which

builds community connections between newcomers and established Canadians.

The program can match volunteers with newcomers on a one-to-one basis who then meet on a regular basis for three to four months.

The Immigrant Youth Program is similar in that staff and volunteers help youth new to the country settle into new school routines. But it’s also about building a social structure for them as well. The teen years can be tough enough as it is – adding the pressures of fitting into a brand new culture can really require some assistance along the way.

Frank Bauer, executive director, added that C.A.R.E. in general certainly relies on the support of a solid base of volunteers.

This is also where public awareness programs come in – educating local communities in general about multiculturalism and the misconceptions that some hold about immigrants. Another example is employer engagement, which is about creating a culturally inclusive workplace.

As mentioned, it’s a special year at C.A.R.E. as the organization is marking its 35th anniversary. Part of celebrating that achievement was held this past April with the successful Around the World with CARE fundraiser. And there has been continued growth with recent renovations – expanding teaching and office spaces in their ideal downtown location.

As for the Museum, folks can drop by on Dec. 6th from 1 to 4 p.m. for an open house. Donations will be accepted on behalf of the Red Deer Food Bank and the Safe Harbour Society.

City of Red Deer unveils final result of Identity Project

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS Red Deer’s Identity Project was developed in 2013 under the City’s Strategic Direction plan and the results of the project were officially released this week.

The vision of the project was to create a unified identification of what the City of Red Deer encompasses. The Identity Project is a way for partners, City staff and other community members to be able to share the collective experience of the City in a uniform way.

Kristy Svoboda, charter champion for the Identity Project, was pleased to be able to announce the launch of a web site and promotional videos that are the result of three years’ work on the project.

“We had the questions being asked by council, but we also had various partners and stakeholders across the City - Tourism Red Deer, the Chamber of Commerce, Red Deer College, and more - all doing similar, but different work. City council said we need to have a project that

really looks at our identity as a whole, rather than individual groups,” Svoboda said.

“It’s important to speak with a united voice about what Red Deer is, especially coming up to the 2019 Canada Winter Games.”

The official launch of the project’s results include a web site, www.uncoverreddeer.ca, and two videos.

The videos are available on the site and are meant to be used as promotional tools both within and outside the City borders.

“When we speak with the same voice, we can more clearly tell Red Deer’s true story,” Svoboda said at the launch event.

“Part of the project is the videos. We have launched the first of many that will be coming. The other part is this micro-site that will be available for our partners initially, and then the citizens, to be able to access so that we’re accessing the same information and videos. We will ask our partners to be posting their stories to the site as well, so that we’re able to share what Red Deer is.”

We asked Red Deerians, ‘What do you love about Red Deer? What is the authentic Red Deer to you?’

After that very thorough engagement process, Red Deerians told us who they are and what they love about the City.

“Today’s launch is the culmination of what citi-

zens said, and it’s the beginning of a whole messaging process and equipping partnering organizations with marketing tools to tell Red Deer’s story on behalf of Red Deerians.”

The videos and information on the site are available to the public. Various City stakeholders will continue to add videos, photos and anecdotes about what they feel the identity of the City is.

“We felt that it was really important to continue on with the process of community engagement because Red Deer’s story

is a living story. With the online access, our community will be able to contribute photos and stories and the great things they love about Red Deer. Central Alberta Turkey Basket Brigade brings holiday cheer

BY SARAH MAETCHE RED DEER EXPRESS The Central Alberta Turkey Basket Brigade is back for the second year.

The volunteer-driven organization has the simple goal - pay it forward this season to a family through a basket of food for a holiday dinner and beyond.

Central Alberta Turkey Basket Brigade Coorganizer Ashley Shaurette said the organization formed last year in order to provide a meal to families in need.

“We put everything from a turkey to a bag of buns, a box of oranges, fresh vegetables and potatoes,” she said of the baskets. “This year we are also doing ham for those who can’t cook a turkey. We provide the basics - the roasting pan, a movie, cookies and treats for the kids, a big

thing of iced tea. It basically lasts them over a week.”

The baskets also include bouillon powder for those who want to make a soup as well as gravy.

“It’s usually too much for one meal because they are getting a whole bag of carrots,” said Shaurette. “They are getting a big bag of pepper plus all the canned stuff, which might last then to after Christmas.”

The volunteer group uses large Tupperware bins to contain all the food. Last year, due to all of the food crammed into the bins, the 15 pound turkeys had to be transported separately. The group delivered 15 baskets last year and are looking to expand their reach for this season.

The organization is based in Sylvan Lake, but delivers baskets to those in need all throughout the Central Alberta re-

gion - from Red Deer to Blackfalds, Innisfail to Condor and Lacombe.

Shaurette said nominations are accepted in two ways - families can nominate themselves or others can nominate a family in need anonymously.

The baskets are then delivered also anonymously by volunteers.

“I know they are probably shocked and wondering who did this? But that’s the whole point of it, if you are going to

EMS make After the Fire visit Members of Red Deer Emergency Services went go door to door Tuesday evening in Highland Green to talk to neighbours following a garage fire that happened last Saturday morning.

The After the Fire program targets neighbourhoods that have experienced a fire, and aims to educate residents about the leading causes of fires to help prevent similar incidents in future.

Members were be out in the area of Holt Street in Highland Green, the site of Saturday’s fire.

Emergency Services staff performed safety checks, share safety tips and install smoke alarms for free or switch out batteries where required.

The fire was confined to the detached garage of the home. The garage was significantly damaged with the roof collapsing and the structural integrity was compromised creating access challenges for fire investigators. There were no injuries. Damages are estimated at $100,000.

nominate someone who wouldn’t normally come forward, who doesn’t want to use the food bank,” said Shaurette.

Because the baskets include so much fresh food and products, the baskets are delivered on Dec. 23rd, closer to Christmas.

Other hamper programs and the Christmas bureaus often have cut off dates, but the Central Alberta Turkey Basket Brigade does not.

“You never know what’s

going to happen over a month,” said Shaurette.

“Maybe right before Christmas something happened and now they are now fine, so we don’t put a cutoff date on it. We can just run to the store, get what they need and deliver it that day, for those last minute ones.”

Nominations for the program will be accepted right up until Dec. 23rd.

The group is also seeking volunteers to help deliver baskets in each region on

delivery day. Sponsors for baskets ($50 per basket) are also encouraged as the group paid out of pocket for each basket last year.

“It’s really all about just giving during the holiday season,” said Shaurette.

Officials unveil new exhibit at Kerry Wood Nature Centre

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS Kerry Wood Nature Centre has received a complete revitalization of its permanent exhibit, blending information on both the past and future visions of the City.

The new exhibit, titled ‘Nature’s Living Story’, is the final piece in a series of centennial projects that were approved by City council in 2013. It recognized a need to modernize the facility with updated scientific information, more interpretive elements and to provide insight into the City’s environmental future.

Rondo Wood, a daughter of Kerry Wood, was present at the official unveiling. She said she was thrilled with the new exhibit, and eagerly explored the facility.

“The introduction of things that are a step beyond technology and innovation of the original exhibit from 1986 are great.

What’s been added here are more modern, universal and interactive things that young people and old people will enjoy,” she said.

Todd Nivens of the Waskasoo Environmental Education Society (WEES) said the exhibit is a great accomplishment for both the Centre and the City.

“What people expect out of an environmental education facility has really changed. We can’t just be plants and animals anymore. Now we talk about environmental education, stewardship, sustainability, reducing our carbon footprint and all of those things. All of those factors coming together with the new Interpretive Master Plan really meant that it was time for the old exhibit to go,” Nivens said.

It also positions us well for our tourism - it is a substantial enhancement to our park node. It’s another reason for people to choose to live here, and a predominant reason for people to visit the City,” Veer said.

Red Deer in the prosperous autumn of 1928 Every once in a while, Central Alberta is blessed with long, warm and dry falls. Once instance occurred 87 years ago in the fall of 1928, when Red Deer was a small prairie town of around 2,800 people.

The year had been a rewarding one for the local farmers.

Crops were good. The long fall ensured a complete harvest. With the creation of the Alberta Wheat Pool and other farmer-owned cooperatives in the mid-1920s, agricultural prices had stabilized and then improved.

After nearly a decade of tough times, prosperity had finally begun to return for the farmers.

Since Red Deer was basically an agricultural service centre, better economic times for the farmers meant better times for the townspeople as well. One of the first signs of the improved economy was the construction of grain elevators by such enterprises as the Alberta Wheat Pool and the National Grain Elevator Co. Moreover, the Alberta Pacific Grain Company built Red Deer’s first radio station on the brow of the Hospital Hill.

One of the key aims of radio station CKLC was to broadcast up-to-the minute grain prices and other marketing information to farmers.

However, a range of musical programs, news flashes, weather and road reports

DAWE and religious shows were also included. One special feature was the broadcast of Sunday evening musical concerts from the Sylvan Lake Hotel.

The new construction projects were not limited to new grain elevators and a radio station.

With more money in the community, people began to purchase more cars. Ole Boode built a new Chrysler and DeSoto dealership on Gaetz Avenue.

Reg Whyte built a Ford dealership and garage on the corner of Gaetz Avenue and 49 St. The Windsor Garage (McLaughlin-Buick) on 51 Avenue, which had been destroyed in a major fire in 1927, was rebuilt.

There were other major improvements to the downtown business district. With construction on the upswing, the ManningSutherland Company built a new lumberyard.

Drs. Dodd and Snell built a large brick addition onto the sandstone building on the corner of Ross Street and Gaetz Avenue. H.H. Humber built an impressive new jewelry store on Ross Street.

Deer’s retail sector came with the decision by the T. Eaton’s Company to open a store in the community.

Eaton’s had commenced a major expansion into western Canada in the mid-1920s.

With Red Deer showing some promising new growth, it became a logical location to open a new department store.

At first, Eaton’s contemplated building a new store or else extensively renovating the large brick Central Block on the north-west corner of Ross Street and Gaetz Avenue.

However, eventually, Eaton’s decided it was better to buy out an existing retail business. Hence, it bought out W.E. Lord’s store on Gaetz Avenue.

Eaton’s created several departments in their new store – men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, boots and shoes, hardware, sporting goods and groceries.

Moreover, a mail order office was opened to enhance Eaton’s incredibly popular catalogue business.

The private sector was not the only one to enjoy the return to prosperity.

The Public School District urgently needed to build a new high school. The old one was so decrepit that had large wooden buttresses were needed to keep the brick walls up.

The ratepayers had defeated a bid to build a new high school in 1924 on the grounds that the proposal was too expensive. Now

the voters were willing to back the construction of a large new school, complete with an auditorium.

The biggest boost was enjoyed by the City of Red Deer.

It successfully signed a long term contract with Calgary Power to supply hydroelectric power to the City instead of rely-

ing on the old, inefficient Western General Electric steam plant on the south bank of the Red Deer River.

Almost immediately, the City was able to both cut utility rates and property taxes, using the huge increase in revenues from the municipally-owned electric light and power department.

POLICE BRIEFS RCMP INVESTIGATE THREE ARMED ROBBERIES Red Deer RCMP are investigating three convenience store armed robberies that occurred early on Nov. 16th.

The first call came in shortly after 2 a.m., after a man with a handgun robbed the 7 Eleven Store at 3803 40th Ave. Red Deer RCMP then received a second call of an armed robbery involving a handgun at the Mac’s Convenience store at 2950 22nd St., and then a third call reporting an armed robbery with a handgun at the Mac’s Store at 420 Allan St..

The investigation is ongoing, and RCMP will release an update as more information becomes available.

PENHOLD FIRE CREWS RESPOND TO CRASH On Nov. 14th at 6:23 p.m. Penhold Fire Crews were dispatched to a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Hwy. 42 and 2A. The intersection was closed in all four directions.

One vehicle had two occupants and the other just the driver, and all were treated at the scene and released.

Penhold Fire Chief Jim Pendergast said, “The fact that everyone was

wearing seatbelts contributed to the minor nature of the injuries”. Pendergast went on to say, “Fire crews assisted the RCMP with traffic management and fluid and debris clean up and the intersection was re-opened at around 8:15 p.m. It was very dark as the street lights kept going off and there was a very high volume of traffic which we re-routed down several side streets.” Five units and 16 firefighters responded. Innisfail RCMP are investigating.

ASIRT ASSIGNED TO INVESTIGATE DEATH The Director of Law Enforcement has directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a man who was found in a wooded area near 32nd St. within Red Deer City limits on Nov. 11th.

Investigation has determined the man was likely involved in an incident with Red Deer RCMP officers in the same area on Oct. 6th.

On that same date, Red Deer RCMP officers were following a reported stolen vehicle. The vehicle refused to stop at which time the RCMP called off their pursuit. A short time later, the vehicle was seen again and followed. The vehicle stopped in the area of 32nd St., east of Taylor

Drive and two people fled into the woods. Police attempted to locate the individuals but were unsuccessful.

On Nov. 11th, the RCMP conducted a search of the same wooded area and came across a deceased man.

Investigation into both incidents indicates the man who ran into the woods on Oct. 6th was likely the same individual who was found deceased. An autopsy has been conducted and there is no evidence to suggest the 45-year-old man died as a result of any physical injury or direct contact with the police. The second person that fled into the woods on Oct. 6th has been subsequently identified, located and interviewed.

ASIRT’s investigation will focus on the circumstances surrounding the events that took place on Oct. 6th to determine whether or not any acts or omissions by police officers contributed to the death of the man.

In light of the fact that ASIRT’s investigation is in its early stages, no further information will be released until the investigation has been concluded.

WOMAN CHARGED AFTER FLEEING POLICE On Nov. 10th at 4 p.m., a member of the Rocky Mountain House

Integrated Traffic Services team attempted to stop a speeding Dodge Durango travelling on Hwy. 11 west of Eckville. The vehicle failed to stop for police and attempted to evade police by turning onto gravel roads in the Benalto area.

A pursuit was not initiated at this time for public safety reasons. Sylvan Lake RCMP members were notified of this occurrence and took positions in several strategic areas in an effort to locate and stop the vehicle using roadblock tactics including spike belts.

The vehicle was located a short time later south of Sylvan Lake on Township Road 372 and Secondary Hwy. 781 but did a u-turn to avoid a deployed spike belt. In doing so, the vehicle turned back towards another well positioned member who managed to lay another spike belt down in the path of the suspect vehicle.

In an attempt to avoid the belt, the vehicle swerved, lost control, hit the ditch and rolled.

Police were on scene and five occupants were taken into custody.

Three of the five people sustained minor injuries and as a result, were transported to hospital. Investigation later revealed the vehicle was stolen that was yet to have been reported as such.

The investigation continues but at this time, the driver has been charged with numerous criminal offences. Charged is 23-year-old Madison Leigh Coutre of no fixed address.

Her charges include possession of stolen property over $5,000, dangerous driving, flight from police and three counts of breaching previous release conditions.

THEFT OF TRUCK AND BOAT On Nov. 9th at 9:46 p.m. entry was gained to a business in the Burnt Lake Industrial Park. A white GMC truck was stolen along with a bright green Tunnel Inboard boat. The truck was recovered a short time later in Blackfalds at the Bottle Depot, fully engulfed in flames. The fire was extinguished with the assistance of the Blackfalds Fire Department. The boat is still outstanding and described as a 22’ Tunnel, AMS 598 CI Engine 800 hp, with custom paint and interior. It is bright green and has white racing stripes.

First Repair Café launches in Red Deer

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS Thanks to a partnership between ReThink Red Deer and the Red Deer Public Libraries, a community Repair Café was held at the Dawe Library Branch to encourage citizens to reuse and recycle more of their goods.

Repair Café was designed by Martine Postma, who held the first event in Amsterdam in 2009. The idea behind it is to invite citizens to a central location where they can learn to do small repairs on household items. Programs can be open to a variety of items at once, or focused on a specific topic each time.

Red Deer’s first Repair Café was held on Nov. 16th at the Dawe Library branch, with a focus on textiles and fabrics. Branch Manager Tatiana Tilly was present with ReThink Red Deer volunteer Kim Stengler to offer their services to community members.

“When I read about Repair Café, I thought that first of all it was a brilliant idea. The thought and creative spirit that is behind it is great. Secondly, I liked that the program was already set up. All we had to do was pick up the program, look at the ideas that are behind it and apply it to our City,” Tilly said.

“I thought it would be perfect

for the library because libraries are here to help people to reconnect with different areas of life.

We have a variety of books on all kinds of subjects, especially in the non-fiction area. We also feel passionate about new recycling and reusing ideas that come through.

I thought (the Repair Café) paralleled the library’s mission to help people learn new things and be conscious of their choices,” she explained.

Tilly and Stengler worked together with other members of their organizations to bring the program to the City. The goal was to encourage people to take a chance at small household repairs to reduce waste in the City landfill, and to bring awareness to the ease and convenience of simple repairs.

“ReThink Red Deer is here to help people think about how we act as a society as a whole. It’s about things like riding your bicycle versus a vehicle, growing urban sustainability, growing your own food. Not many people are aware of or take actions for those things.

The Repair Café really blended well with our ideologies and the projects we go for,” Stengler said.

“We were looking at hosting a Repair Café in March and then maybe expanding it. This event was a place to start. Maybe next time it will be textiles and looking

at household item fuses or something like that.”

Closer to March more information will be available on the date and time of the next Repair Café.

Both Tilly and Stengel said they hope the program will grow, and they hope people recognize the benefits it could have in every

Flags of Remembrance closing ceremony held last weekend

BY JASMINE O’HALLORAN-HAN COURTESY OF SYLVAN LAKE NEWS The Flags of Remembrance closing ceremony took place last Saturday at H.J. Cody School where sponsors received their plaques along with the Canadian flag it accompanied.

Around 125 plaques were sponsored this year. Sponsors of these plaques had the unique opportunity of posting these plaques to a flag pole on Oct. 17th at the Flags of Remembrance ceremony along Hwy. 11.

These flags were put up close to a month prior to Remembrance Day as Veterans Voices of Canada Executive Director and Producer Allan Cameron said he and his group felt that Remembrance Day should be every day.

“As far as the flags go we want them up as long as possible but at the same time realizing they have to go up but then come back down again,” Cameron said. “A month ahead of Remembrance Day is good because we get people thinking more on a daily basis to remember our heroes and veterans, which is important.”

The plaques were engraved with the name of a past, current or lost in action person who served the country. The plaques and flags were taken down Nov. 12th. The flags were neatly folded and were given to their

sponsor during the ceremony on Saturday.

These sponsored plaques raised around $16,000 with the money going back to Veteran Voices of Canada to pay for the plaques and to help the organization continue documenting veterans’ stories for historical and educational purposes.

This event was well attended with both veterans and community members and served as a final thank you to past, current and lost in action veterans for the year.

Cameron said the ceremony went well adding it was amazing to see all the people that came out to be a part of it all.

“It was emotional and just makes me realize there’s lots of support for this,” Cameron said.

“It wasn’t just sponsors who were there, it was also other people who just wanted to come along and experience it. It’s very neat to see that.”

He said this tells him that there’s a lot of people who understand what they are trying to do and how a lot of people support local veterans.

The closing ceremony began with the Sylvan Lake Legion Colour Party posting different flags to the left of the audience, with recording artist Jodie Leslie singing the national anthem in English and French combined into one.

This all led to Cameron sharing why it is important to keep history alive and why he thanks veterans for serving the country. “Some people look at Remembrance Day in the November period and we’re trying to make it so that it’s extended,” Cameron said. “We want Remembrance Day to be every day, so we’re doing what we can do.”

The audience watched a video of the raising the flags ceremony for Flags of Remembrance which took place last month on both sides of Hwy. 11. This showed the audience a bird’s eye view of over 120 flags standing tall and free, representing 128,000 Canadian veterans dead and missing in action.

After this video the solemnness was felt in the audience as emotions of gratitude, appreciation and sadness for a loved one was seen on many different faces.

Korean war veteran Colonel Andrew Moffat and got up and spoke about his experiences.

Moffat’s speech was powerful and gave insight to the audience as to what he and his fellow soldiers went through while fighting.

Something that hit home was how Moffat and his soldier friends were given old equipment to work with. He explained how the equipment was so old

He went on to say that in 1945 people did not want to hear the word ‘war’.

After speaking on his experience fighting in the Korean war and upon returning to sit back down in his chair Moffat received a standing ovation and the audience expressed their gratitude for his service.

It was then time for members of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets to present 125 plaques and flags to the sponsors.

Cameron announced the name inscribed on each plaque along with the sponsor of the plaque.

Why you’ve got to hustle every single day At the ‘late to the party’ age of 43, and after many, many years of trying a lot of different things, I was gifted with the extreme joy and privilege to be a daddy.

Every day I am grateful for what he teaches me, and I have to say, my three and a half year old never walks anywhere.Even if he is going to get underwear from his dresser drawer, he flat out runs! Why? He has stuff to do! When he wakes up in the morning he rubs his little eyes and jumps out of bed, like he is in disbelief that he was sleeping and might have missed anything, excited to start his day. Okay, I know all parents of teenagers (and my own memories) tell me that this too shall pass, but for now, I watch in wonder and love.

It brings to mind a saying I have said for years and years, as I run up the stairs at the gym to my office (I pretty much never walk, ask anyone), “Never waste a chance to exercise.”

Every day we teach our body how to be. Our body is taking notes and there is no fudging the data. I avoid elevators. I park far away. I run up stairs. I avoid the escalator or the moving sidewalk at the airport. I carry heavy things. Every chance I get, I move, I ask my body to be strong and it responds because that is all the human body is designed to do - respond.

Years ago I played a lot of computer games and I watched a lot of TV. My body responded. I worked too much, slept too little, ate poorly and yup, my body responded. I was fat and sick.

Action, reaction.

Now that I am healthy and more vibrant at age 46 than I ever was at 30, I can honestly say that you have got to hustle! Trust me, gravity works and aging happens. It now requires more effort to stay fit and healthy than it did 16 years ago, but it still pays off big time!

In less than two weeks I will race in my third Ultraman Triathlon, the world championships. It is a three day event involving a 10 km swim and a 145 km bike on day one. Then a 217 km bike ride over a few mountain ranges on day two.

Finally we run 84.4 kms on the Queen Ka’ahumanu highway in Kona Hawaii, which means black lava to the left, and right, and black asphalt underneath and an air temp of 30C degrees. Only 40 people are invited to this race each year, and you have to earn your spot. You have to hustle. You cannot fake it, or slide in, or pretend, because even if you manage to get in, the race will chew you up and spit you out on day one.

Minor surgeries that can sometimes end in disaster There is one fundamental rule in surgery, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’

Why? Because as one of Harvard’s great neurosurgeon once remarked, “There is no such thing as minor surgery, but there are a lot of minor surgeons.”

He could have added that minor surgery can also result in needless tragic deaths. And that one major operation can be avoided.

The best adult example is Joan Rivers, the comedian, who allegedly had undergone several cosmetic face lifts and joked about it. But she had one too many and died of cardiac arrest during the operation.

The youngest tragedy is the newborn baby who recently suffered a circumcision, apparently unwanted by his parents. He died from hemorrhage.

For some families the decision for circumcision is important.

They believe it should be performed for religious or for medical reasons. But if that’s not the case remember, “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”

JONES One lame argument for circumcision is that it prevents cancer of the penis, an extremely rare problem.

Another reason is that this procedure decreases the number of urinary infections during the first year of life. But it also decreases the pleasure of sex for the next 75 or more years as the foreskin is loaded with blood vessels and nerves!

There’s also a general belief that foreskin covers only a small surface of the penis, but once removed the skin measures three to five inches in length.

That’s about half of the total skin of the penis.

What about complications? Compared to brain surgery circumcision is a minor procedure normally without bad results. But no surgical procedure, to my knowledge, has been

devised, regardless of how minor, that is without some untoward results.

The world’s medical journals are full of reports of a variety of surgical mishaps. The vast majority of severe complications are not acts of God, but due to technical errors made during the procedure.

A primary problem is the incorrect use of the circumcision clamp. In some cases an excessive amount of skin is pulled into the clamp resulting in injury, not only to the shaft of the penis, but also to the urinary tube (urethra) that runs through it. In one case, the traumatic complication resulted in amputation of part of the penis.

Traumatic injuries to the penis and urethra often result in urinary stricture and difficulty passing urine. Or, the injury may result in a urinary fistula in which urine is discharged through an abnormal opening. These complications are not easy to repair so what starts as a ‘minor’ procedure becomes a major one.

There have been bizarre problems that one would think could never happen.

For instance, one newborn screamed with such intensity that his stomach ruptured requiring emergency surgery. Another died from a bleeding disorder.

It’s easy to see how this could occur since blood coagulation studies are not routinely done prior to circumcision.

My reaction to circumcision is that unless it’s needed for religious or other reasons, it’s a barbaric and somewhat sadistic procedure. Yet doctors continue to do circumcisions without giving much thought to unintended consequences.

ENTERTAINMENT Brett Kissel brings his ‘Airwaves Tour’ to Red Deer

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Country artist Brett Kissel has been crossing the nation with his Airwaves Tour that includes a Red Deer stop on Nov. 22nd at Cowboys Bar. After the success Kissel had with his major label debut CD Started With A Song, it would be tempting for anyone to kick off their boots, crack a cold one or two, and imagine things couldn’t get any better. His latest disc, Pick Me Up, was released this past September. The first single, Airwaves, shot to number one earlier this year and the latest single - the title track from the record - is proving to be a hit as well.

“It’s been incredible - one of the best experiences I’ve ever had,” he said regarding the current tour. “Lots of sold out shows and we will have played every province by the time the tour is done. We are very, very lucky.”

As for Pick Me Up, Kissel said the vision from the start was simple - to harness the energy he sees in his live shows and inject it into the recording process. And for those tunes with a comparatively happy lyric, he wanted listeners to be able to ‘hear’ a smile.

“I wanted them to hear great energy and excitement,” he said, adding he wanted the emotions to shine through on the ballads as well. There’s no question he has succeeded, thanks also to producers Bart McKay and Mickey Jack Cones.

Kissel said both men contributed enormously to the project, and Cones in particular helped him explore some fresh territory as the well-known producer comes from a, “Completely different side of country.

“I think that allowed me to do something different with the record, and make it sound a little bit more modern,” he explained, adding that much of the CD was recorded in Canada. “That was a very special thing for me, and something that I’m really proud of,” he said. “I think we are able to officially over the next few years, be able to bridge the gap between what can be done in Nashville and can’t be done in Canada. Now, there is nothing that we can’t do with the technology because of the production (capabilities) and the talent up here in Canada.”

Meanwhile, his Juno Award for Breakthrough Artist marked the first time in 17 years a country act earned the honour. He had five Billboard Canada

It hasn’t been too long since Kissel was last in town - he performed at Westerner Days in July of last year, and hit the stage with Brad Paisley in the fall of 2014 as well.

Originally from Flat Lake, Alberta, Kissel’s passion for music was sparked early on. And his folks have pointed out that he’s been an attention-seeker his whole life. He was given a guitar at seven and it wasn’t long before a gift for making music was very apparent. At 10, he was playing three-chord Johnny Cash songs at talent shows.

“It was a house of music, although my parents didn’t play anything,” he recalls of his growing up years. “They didn’t play

or sing. My grandparents didn’t and my cousins didn’t. Not even a single person in the entire extended family was really involved in music.

“We loved it - we went to concerts and listened to the radio a lot. My dad and I listened to bands like the Eagles or Alabama and my mom and I listened to George Strait all the time. My grandparents listened to traditional country all the time also.

“So I was influenced by music, even though we then had nothing to do with the music business,” he said.

“My parents would say that from a very early age, I was an attention seeker, I loved the spotlight and I was always performing,” he said. “I was singing as a little, little kid - at seven years of age I got my first guitar and I’d be strumming Garth Brooks songs and singing along to the radio.

“But I think I really started to dive into it when I was 11 or 12. I was entering competitions and performing a lot locally.” He also starting landing paid gigs. “Before you know it, I’m 14 years old and my dad has to set up a bank account for me because I was working every Friday, Saturday and Sunday! I’d be doing homework in the van as we drove down to Red Deer or up to Cold Lake,” he recalled.

One thing was for certain – there was no looking back. Kissel said he’s always felt very much at home onstage. “Music is the only thing I’ve every really wanted to do,” he has said. “And being onstage is my favourite thing – there is nowhere else I’d rather be. Local authors host a triple launch of new titles

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Local poetry fans won’t want to miss a ‘triple launch’ of poets’ new works set for Nov. 27th in the Coconut Room downtown.

The evening, which is also a fundraiser for the League of Canadian Poets, begins at 7 p.m.

City-based poets/authors Kimmy Beach and Leslie Greentree are hosting the event, which will feature Peter Midgley, Jenna Butler and Jeanette Lynes, who all have had books coming out with Woslak & Wynn this fall.

“I’m of the school that says we write in solitude but we come together as community,” explained Beach, reflecting on the joys of bringing such talented authors together and presenting their works to an audience. “In doing things like this, you bring together all of these people - we are a tight-knit bunch of people - but we are very open to any kind of community that wants to come. There are always faces we don’t recognize at (these functions).

“So for me it’s about bringing together readers and writers and just having a damn good time. If people buy books, great, because that’s what we are about but it’s not all that we are about. We have

things to say, and if we have friendly, supportive places in which we can read our books - it just makes for a beautiful evening,” she said, adding how grateful she and Greentree are for the community support that helps make these events a reality. “The most important thing about this industry is people. It’s about connections, friendships and people.”

Meanwhile, Butler, who is based in Edmonton and teaches at Red Deer College, is releasing A Profession of Hope: Farming on the Edge of the Grizzly Trail which is described in the following publisher’s preamble.

“Early in the winter of 2006, Jenna Butler found herself standing on a cold country road, looking over an unpromising quarter section of northern bush. With the glow of her car’s headlights, she surveyed an abandoned grain bin, listened to the howl of a coyote pack and the call of a great horned owl, and knew a switch had flipped inside of her. Passionate about small farming and organic practices, Butler and her partner have withstood drought, floods, insects and their neighbours’ disbelief over the past nine years to create Larch Grove Farm.”

Beach said the book is about Butler’s experiences in bringing the farm, which is located north of Edmonton, to fruition

and becoming not only an organic farmer but also part of the community.

“In the process of writing this book, she had learned not only about farming, but about community and what it means to belong somewhere,” she said. “She’s a wonderful addition to our community.

We are fortunate to have her, and she’s building up a nice following in town here - people really like her because she’s a terrific writer and she’s a really nice person. We are delighted that she’s here.”

Lynes is releasing Bedlam Cowslip: The John Clare Poems.

According to publisher notes, Lynes, who hails from Saskatchewan, turns her attention to the life and work of John Clare (1793–1864), the renowned poet of the countryside and one of England’s greatest working-class bards.

Beach described her as a writer who takes her subject matter, “Researches the heck out of it and distills it in these magnificent books. She’s a fantastically talented author. She’s also really fun-loving, really humourous and a very down to earth and affectionate person.”

Finally, Edmonton-based Midgley was in Red Deer last year for the release of his book Counting Teeth: A Namibian Story.

His newest title is called Unquiet Bones.

“Midgley does not shy away from politics,

whether documenting efforts to uproot colonialism or the number of murdered Aboriginal women in Canada,” reads the publisher notes. “In these dramatic and uncompromising poems, Midgley roves between Canada and Africa, stopping briefly to consider struggles for democracy in places as diverse as Hong Kong and Ancient Rome.

Meanwhile, Beach and Greentree are acclaimed and extremely gifted authors in their own right. Besides The Last Temptation of Bond, Beach’s other titles include Nice Day for Murder: poems for James Cagney, Alarum Within: theatre poems, fake Paul and in Cars.

Greentree’s titles include guys named Bill, go-go dancing for Elvis and a volume of short stories entitled A Minor Planet for You. Beach also mentioned that there will be two prize packs full of books the night of the launch - thanks to the generosity of Wolsak & Wynn and Noelle Allen. The prizes will be raffled off with proceeds going to the League of Canadian Poets.

“That money goes back to funding for readings like these - so it’s all full circle.”

Central Alberta dance school stages Narnia

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS The characters from The Chronicles of Narnia will be brought to life via dancers with a Central Alberta dance school.

Joy’s School of Dance will stage Narnia Nov. 28th at the Welikoklad Centre (4922 49th St.).

Performances run at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

“I like the idea of Narnia because it’s a story that many people are familiar with,” said Joy McIlwain, owner and dance instructor at Joy’s School of Dance.

“We’ve tried to include something for everyone to relate to and going back to your childhood is always

something that is fun too,” she added of the classic story.

There are about 70 dancers who will perform Narnia this year with different styles including ballet, jazz, acro and lyrical, among others.

This is the fourth time the dance troupe has staged Narnia and McIlwain said she received positive feedback from last year’s show.

“It was definitely the kids’ request this year.

They were very anxious to do it again.

“It’s so neat to see the younger dancers looking up to the older ones and thinking that one day they will dance that part too,”

said McIlwain. “Anyone I talked to really enjoyed it a lot because it was something different.”

According to Wikipedia, The Chronicles of Narnia is a series of seven fantasy novels by C. S. Lewis. It is considered a classic of children’s literature and is the author’s best known work, having sold over 100 million copies in 47 languages.

Written by Lewis between 1949 and 1954, illustrated by Pauline Baynes and originally published in London between October 1950 and March 1956, The Chronicles of Narnia has been adapted several times, complete or in part, for radio, television, the

stage and film.

Set in the fictional realm of Narnia, a fantasy world of magic, mythical beasts and talking animals, the series narrates the adventures of various children who play central roles in the unfolding history of that world.

Of all the books, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, is perhaps one of the most popular and re-created of them all.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, completed by the end of March 1949 and published in 1950, tells the story of four children Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie.

Kirke’s house that leads to the magical land of Narnia.

The Pevensie children help Aslan, a talking lion, save Narnia from the evil White Witch, who has reigned over the land of Narnia for a century of perpetual winter.

“It has a Christmas feel to it and I think it’s such a classic and it’s different - it’s not something that everyone is used to seeing in a performance. It’s something new.

“Anyone of all ages can enjoy it.”

Derek Edwards brings ‘Baloney and Wine’ tour to City

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Comedian Derek Edwards is bringing his latest show Baloney and Wine - to the City on Nov. 21st.

Described as an ‘uproarious romp through the increasingly strange quirks of our daily routines’, the show runs at the Memorial Centre starting at 7:30 p.m.

The performance has also been described as relentless and brazen, a tightly woven running commentary about human nature - ‘the thinking man’s coffee break.’

In an ever more chaotic world, Edwards remains an inimitable constant, the hilarious voice of reason.

As he says, “28 years in, it’s AAALLLL starting to click!”

Edwards has been making his mark on the comedic landscape of this country for decades - and has loads of accolades collected along the way. From

Vegas to St. John’s, this Just For Laughs veteran is considered to be among the comic elite.

Certainly his peers think so, as evidenced by the fact that he’s a four-time nominee, and winner of Best Standup Comic - Canadian Comedy Awards, as well as a multiple Gemini nominee for Best Performance in a Comedy.

He explains the joy of performing in Canada is that most of us don’t take ourselves too seriously – as individuals or as a country.

He also always tries to meld a local touch into his shows, and the best way to do that is chatting with folks in the hotel he happens to be staying at in a given community.

As for Baloney and Wine, he describes the process of putting the material together as sort of coming together in bits and pieces.

“You have some ideas and think of some jokes, and some of them start to

work,” he explains during a chat from Toronto. “It’s fresh and new, and you think, well, maybe I can piece this together. I wish there was a more specific way of doing it, like building a lawn mower,” he laughs. “It’s just a lot of juggling and praying and trying out things - and if they don’t work, you think, can I make this work?

“There are also lots of little decisions about what you include and what you don’t.”

Of course, the show evolves over the course of a tour as well - things that strike communities funny in the east part of the country don’t always connect in the west for example.

But you never really know how a given show will go - and that’s part of the fun. “It’s a bit of a dance up there - sure. I won’t pretend it isn’t. It’s also not like doing improv,” he added, noting how scary that could be. “That’s what

Central Alberta Theatre shines with latest production 37 Postcards

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Central Alberta Theatre is exploring the quirky ins and outs of a dysfunctional family via their latest dinner theatre outing, 37 Postcards, which runs through to Dec. 4th at the Quality North Hill Inn. Directed by Glorene Ellis and written by Michael McKeever, the play explores the inner workings - and outer mayhem - of the Sutton family. Avery Sutton (Perry Mill) has been travelling around Europe for several years and decides to head home with his fiance, Gillian - played wonderfully by the always charming Tara Rorke.

But things just aren’t the same. First of all, his mom Evelyn (Debra O’Brien) seems to be increasingly disconnected from reality. His aunt Ester (Debby Allan) - also a rather eccentric soul - has discovered a shocking means of raking in some cash on the side, and his father Stanford sort of drifts in and out of the goings-on.

Stanford, played by the always solid and reliable Michael Sutherland, also has his own personal news to share towards the middle of the play, which adds a touch of melancholy to what otherwise is a quirky and likable comedy.

And then there is Nana - the sharptongued (that’s putting it mildly) granny with a penchant for profanity who was mistakenly assumed to have passed on but is very, very much alive. Kudos to the terrific Lavila Lang for her performance anyone who knows just how sweet and wonderful this lady really is will be very much impressed by her acting chops and in many instances, Lang nabs the biggest laughs of the show.

Ellis has done a masterful job of directing 37 Postcards - it flows along briskly and

it’s been a while since I’ve seen a CAT cast gel so well. O’Brien is fantastic as Evelyn - but then again, O’Brien is pretty much terrific in any role she has tackled over the years. She’s funny but she can also nail those subtle tones of vulnerability and pain. Altogether, she turns in a masterful performance as the very fragile Evelyn - you find yourself really feeling for this woman in spite of her apparent refusal to face life as it is.

Allan is also great fun as Aunt Ester. Like O’Brien, Allan always brings so much to every role she’s in. She has such a natural, easy charisma - always fun to watch and always ready with her superb comic timing as well.

And as mentioned earlier, Rorke is great as rattled Gillian, introduced to this most unusual of families. Her and Mill have a strong chemistry as well, which that much more enhances the strength of her performance.

Last but certainly not least, Mill is also really solid as Avery - who on many levels is really at the heart of this story.

Mill brings a steady ‘everyman’ feel to his character - he’s earnest, he’s sincere and he really cares about his family - regardless of ways they’ve taken to coping with the darker chapters of life.

All said, 37 Postcards has a nice polished sense of sophistication to it. It’s a really different kind of story, but I mean that in a good way. And again, the power of the cast - who work so well together and bring everything they have to the table in terms of energy, spirit and dedication - lifts it to an even higher place.

I find amazing and truly terrifying - someone giving you a topic and you just run with it,” he explained.

“That to me is amazing when it works,” he said.

Originally from Timmins, Ontario, he has credited his supportive folks with part of why he took to humour from a young age.

He recalls family reunions with lots of laughs. “My folks are both funny, and my sister is way funnier than I am,” he explained.

“So I’m the low man on the totem pole - maybe I’ve been trying to prove something all of these years,” he laughed. What helped him translate a talent into a career is his sense of tenacity. He just wouldn’t give up - even if early shows didn’t go particularly well.

“I remember guys if they had a rough show, that was it. You’ve got to take it on the chin once in a while, you know?”

Looking back at his formation for a career in comedy, one of the key moments came in high school when he was asked to read announcements because the valedictorian couldn’t show up. Just reading the material didn’t seem like much fun, he recalled.

Edwards opted to throw

ON TOUR - Canadian comedian Derek Edwards performs at the Memorial Centre on Nov. 21st. a funny spin on things and the audiences quickly appreciated his approach.

“That’s what put the hook in me,” he said. “I was also quite shy, so it was a good way to get to know people by getting a few jokes in there.”

Meanwhile, other performance highlights over the years include his 60 city cross-Canada tour for ‘Sleepless in Gogoma’.

He’s also been featured everywhere from Raising The Roof in Halifax to The Improv in Los Angeles and Evening At The Improv at Harrah’s in Las Vegas.

His humour, which delves into the oddities of

everyday situations, has also been showcased on A&E’s Comedy Hits the Road, CTV’s Comedy Now, CBC’s Comics, The Multi-Cultural Show, The Prime Minister’s Show, Sleeping With The Elephant and The Halifax Comedy Festival.

“Being able to dump off the yoke of whatever is dragging you down and leave your thinking cap under your seat - it’s like an escape hatch. That’s the idea. Some people find it good for the heart and good for the soul.”

Andy White hits the road with his new CD

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Singer Andy White is heading back to Canada to showcase his latest CD with a stop at Fratters on Nov. 22nd.

White is well-known as half of ‘folk super-duo’ of Fearing and White (with Stephen Fearing), but this time around the Belfastborn, Australia-residing artist is venturing out on his own on The Fearless Tour.

White’s music has been described as a mix of folk, UK pop-rock, punk, and storytelling - all filtered through a poet’s sensibility. How Things Are marks

White’s 11th studio CD. The project came about after his marriage ended, in order to answer the often asked question ‘How are things?’ ”When my marriage broke down I instinctively did what I always do when things aren’t going well or conversely, going amazingly well - I write,” he explained. “I’d go up to the studio at night and sing and play - do whatever it is that I know how to do. Working it out, I guess.”

A few months after returning from the first Fearing & White tour, he went back and listened to the material again.

”It was obvious - the songs which would become How Things Are shone out from the rest, telling a particular story,” he said.

“Also, an important thing about How Things Are to note is that even though it’s natural to focus on the lyrics when writing about it, at least half of it for me is the music,” he said.

The style ranges from full-on rock to impressionistic acoustic, all shot through with White’s trademark wit.

As well as writing If I Catch You Crying for Blackie & The Rodeo Kings, in an illustrious 11 albums-andt h re e - p u bl i s h e d - b o o k s career, White has also written with the likes of Neil and Tim Finn, and Peter Gabriel, who recently shared White’s song Dignity on his facebook page. He has also worked with Van Morrison and Sinead O’Connor, won Ireland’s top songwriting awards and been inducted into the HQ Irish Music Hall of Fame.

All of this, plus joining with Fearing during Canadian tours, supporting their two albums Fearing & White (2011) and Tea and Confidences (2014).

But even without Fearing this time around, he’s

looking forward to his Canadian adventure. “The four-way stops are a problem and I can’t get used to the frozen-with-fear expressions of drivers coming towards me as I veer towards the left-hand side of the road,” he said. “You guessed it - when we tour Canada, Stephen drives. In the UK I take over - with the result that we’re actually always sitting in the same seats. I have rarely seen the left side of his face, in fact.

“Seriously, it’ll be interesting to see how many of the Fearing and White fans turn out. I’d hope that of all the thousands of people we’ve played to in Canada, some will be intrigued enough to come and see what the Irish guy on the other side of the stage does on his own.

“I know that not many people know my musical history in Canada, so it’s been amazing to write, play, and be introduced to the depth of (Canada’s) musical tradition by Stephen.

To get a feel for the respect folk/acoustic/roots music holds in Canada. The UK’s really about rock bands.

Ireland - traditional music, poetry and U2. Canada it’s the home of the singer-songwriter.”

Meanwhile, White said his own start in music began rather early.

“I was lucky - I grew up in a good neighbourhood, but the violence in Northern Ireland affected everybody and was all-pervasive. We couldn’t go down town at night - there was a curfew, with the city centre ringed by army checkpoints.

Everyday explosions and killings - the numbers were relatively small 3,000 total over 30 years - but it was a relentless catalogue of real horror.”

The instability kept many musicians away, but the ones who did come to town included musicians like John Martyn and Roy Harper, or punk bands like The Clash.

“After a childhood listening to my mum and dad’s record collection of Beatles, Dylan, jazz and Burl Ives - digging it all - when punk arrived in 1977, I knew it was my music,” he said.

“Punk suited Belfast - we knew the hippies lived in Dublin and thought the Boomtown Rats were really just the E Street Band in pyjamas. A saxophone?

Really?

“Music was a way out - I met kids like myself from

the opposite side of the religious divide for the first time. We ripped up our t-shirts and a drank cider/ lager mix in alleyways.

“By the mid-eighties punk has passed and I thought there was no one expressing what I was feeling musically it was the era of Wham and Duran Duran. A friend threw an acoustic guitar out of a first floor window in University Street and I picked it up on the way home. Central Alberta roper wins Canadian Championship

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS The Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) is the most prestigious rodeo on the Canadian Rodeo Circuit.

To even make it to the week long aggregate format rodeo at Rexall Place, cowboys need to be among the top 12 highest earners in the country in their respective event.

With more than $200,000 per event on the line throughout the week and the championship buckle going to the cowboy (or cowgirl) with the highest season earnings, the competition is fierce.

Which is why it’s so impressive that Lacombe native Tyrel Flewelling claimed his third Canadian Championship as a heeler in Edmonton last week.

“I’m feeling pretty good. I’m pretty excited about it. It’s always nice to win, it just validates having a great season,” said the 29-year-old team roper, who also won the title in 2011 and 2013.

The CFR is an aggregate-style rodeo, meaning the cowboy with the highest total earnings at the end of the week gets the title.

Team roping, however, works a little bit differently than most of the other events because while the total prize money for winning or placing in a go-round is the same as the other events, the total gets split between the header and the heeler of the team. The two cowboys’ earnings are then tracked separately.

Flewelling and his roping partner Roland McFadden came into the finals in third place on the overall standings, just $2,000 shy of season leaders Brett Buss and Klay Whyte. And with each round paying out a combined $12,000 to the winners (not to mention the slough of money available for placing in a goround) a $2,000 lead can disappear pretty fast.

“This year I was way more consistent. I didn’t really miss too many steers and then a week up in Edmonton I was able to catch ‘em all up there too so I just felt like my consistency is as good as it’s ever been,” Flewelling said.

And the two of them didn’t disappoint at Rexall. They posted qualified times on five out of six of the steers that they drew, including a time of 5.0 to win the second go-round.

While they only won the one round, Flewelling and McFadden were quick enough to consistently place in the top five, earning money along the way. Their consistency, combined with the fact that they only took one 10 second penalty all week, put them right into the race for the

best average time in the team roping.

At the CFR, the average race plays out like an extra round. So in team roping, the five teams with the lowest average time over the six performances get an extra cheque on top of their earnings from the week.

Going into Sunday’s performance the cowboys had earned a total of $13, 500 apiece to put them firmly in the lead and just needed to post a clean run to lock down second place in the average race and, with it, the Canadian title.

“We knew if we had a clean run we would win second in the average, that would seal it, so we just said to each other ‘hey let’s just go do what we did all year,’” McFadden, a Vulcan, Alberta boy, said.

And they stepped up to the occasion, posting a time of 4.8,

“You never really know how the week’s going to go up there,” Flewelling said. “You just try and go up there and make your consistent run and try and place along the way and hopefully have a chance at the average at the end of the week.”

This is the second time the pair, with McFadden at the head of the steer and Flewelling roping the heels, have competed together at CFR, but it’s the first time they’ve won it together. In fact, this was McFadden’s first ever Canadian title, something that Flewelling said was a pretty cool thing to be a part of.

“It’s pretty awesome to be part of (Roland’s) first win. It’s great.

I’m just proud of him because he’s roped good enough here to do it before and things just didn’t go his way,” Flewelling

said. The two cowboys started roping together last season and have had to work through a number of challenges on their way to the finals, not the least of which is the distance between their homes.

“It makes it kind of tricky. In the spring time the rodeos are all kind of down that way so I try to go down there and as the summer keeps progressing he comes up here and ropes,” Flewelling said about how they work around the roughly three hour drive from Vulcan to Lacombe.

But at the end of the day, he said, the travel time is worth it because he’s able to compete with someone he gets along well with. “We get along really good, so it’s nice to win with your friend.” zcormier@reddeerexpress.com

RDC Kings volleyball smashing the season Queens volleyball team continues to struggle to find footing

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS The Red Deer College Kings volleyball team has had a monster start to the season.

The Kings, who are currently sitting at the top of the ACAC’s South Division, are undefeated at 8-0 so far.

“To be 8-0 in the ACAC is always a good thing and we have two tough weekends coming up against Ambrose and Lethbridge and so we’re just trying to improve every weekend,” said Head Coach Aaron Schula.

So far this season, the RDC men’s team have had very few difficulties picking up wins. They’ve won five of their eight matches in straight sets, and had just one game go all the way to five.

But Schula said there is still work that needs to be done.

“I think we’re a pretty talented team. Our high end is very high but we’ve also been having way too many peaks and valleys throughout the year, or throughout matches, where our low end is still very low,” said Schula after the team’s 3-0 win over Olds College last Saturday.

To illustrate this, the coach pointed out one point in the third set of Saturday’s game against Olds. The team went down 8-3 to start off the set before having to come all the way back to win the set 25-17.

“I think that kind of shows the variance in the levels of play that we’re at right now, which still isn’t good enough,” he said, adding that while an 8-0 start is a good thing,

“We’re trying to squeeze that together a little bit where our low end isn’t nearly as low and we’re giving up fewer runs.”

For Schula, the expectation for performance is always set high.

“My expectations are rarely different from year to year. It’s always to give ourselves a chance to win an ACAC championship

“For us it all starts with first contact. If we’re passing the ball and serving the ball well, we’re a pretty physical team so we can do a lot of damage at the net both offensively and defensively but we’ve got to look after the first contact piece and really work our tails off on defense.”

They’re currently ranked first in the ACAC in both Kills/Set and Blocks/Set thanks, in part, to the fact they have played just 28 sets through eight games, the lowest in the entire conference by far.

And of those 28 sets, the team has lost a grand total of four - one against Medicine Hat, one against Briercrest College, and two against SAIT. The Kings have allowed the opposition to score a total of 513 points over 28 sets. That’s an average of 18.3 points per set. They’ve countered that, though, by scoring a total of 600 points.

“Our record right now is good. I don’t think we’ve played at that consistently high level yet but we definitely have some weapons and being able to rest some of those guys this weekend I think was really important for us going forward,” Schula said.

Only time will tell if the Kings will continue to be the offensive powerhouse they have been throughout the first eight matches.

On the other side of the court, the RDC Queens volleyball team has been struggling to gain a foothold this season.

The Queens are currently tied with Lethbridge College for fifth in the ACAC South Division with a 3-5 record so far this year.

“This season’s been a tough one for us so far,” said Head Coach Talbot Walton after the team picked up a 3-1 over Olds College last Saturday afternoon.

The defending Canadian champions had a tough schedule to start the season. After a couple of games against Medicine Hat College (4-6) to start the season, both of which they won, the Queens had a week off before they went up against the top two teams in the division with SAIT (6-2) and Briercrest (8-2) on back to back weekends.

“Especially with a new team, learning new systems, losing both those sets of games really set us back a lot,” Walton said.

And the challenges con-

tinued this weekend when they hosted Olds College, who are currently tied with SAIT for second in the division with a 6-2 record.

Friday night’s game was a hard fought battle. RDC won the first two sets 25-20 and 25-15 to jump out to an early 2-0 lead.

It wouldn’t last, however, as Olds would come out and win three straight sets 25-14, 25-22 and 15-11 to claim a 3-2 victory.

RDC didn’t give up, though, and came back the very next day on their home court to claim a 3-1 victory and snap a fivegame losing skid.

“We’re close and we’re getting better and better and hopefully now we’re at that point where we can start to turn the corner and really start to play good volleyball again,” Walton said, adding the team still has a lot to work on.

Don’t be too quick to toss the retro look If you are a follower on any social media site, you have probably noticed the trends which come and go and how fast things can change. Lately my feed has been full of retro items bringing up wonderful memories from my past. I can’t remember having so many suggestions for long forgotten recipes, knitting patterns, adult colouring books and long forgotten design styles.

Travel to the new areas of Red Deer and take note of the roof vaults and horizontal window styles being installed. They call this a more contemporary design but it is actually a retro, Andrew Lloyd Wright inspired look that has been dormant since the early 70s.

The exciting thing for those of you who never throw anything away is that you may be on the precipice of a style revolution which will allow you to use some of your treasures!

WYSE over the weekend; I went with this lovely couple to several homes ranging from a brand new build to a trapped in time house.

When we entered this home we actually started giggling at the design style that was perfectly preserved, I can’t remember the last time I saw shag carpet in a bathroom!

Then an amazing thing happened, the house caught their imagination and they started to use phrases like ‘we could change this or paint that’, ‘this feels like a real family home.’

It actually went from silly to charming in just a few minutes and it was easy

to see that the house had many aspects which appealed to this family.

One bathroom had the original mosaic tiles around the tub which were absolutely perfect, not a chip or discoloured grout joint in sight and of all of the things they loved that was a major element.

It became more of a discussion about how fun that bathroom would be to decorate as a whimsical space for their children, keeping the retro tile and fixtures.

In our frantic attempt to keep up with our neighbours or to be ‘in style’, we often overlook or discard items from the past which are valuable or just plain charming.

I am all for spaces being updated and functional but I think that style is gaining a retro edge and we just be able to cash in on some of these aging homes in some of the coolest neighbourhoods including Sunnybrook, Mountview and Waskasoo.

Some of these homes have been lived

in for decades without a single upgraded design element and the stories and styles they hold are priceless. You can’t even imagine how exciting it is for me to open the doors and cross the thresholds of some of these homes!

Think of some of these properties as the devilled eggs of real estate.

A forgotten appetizer that when revised and updated with a hit of chipotle or curry can be a new delight with a retro twist – and it’s absolutely delicious!

There is something very comforting about a charming archetypal home in a well-established neighbourhood. You will be the proud owner of a functional and well-constructed classic that will be the envy of your friends and family; don’t forget to serve fondue at your house warming party.
