In 2007, the number of cancer care patient visits at St. Joseph’s General was 1,408, and by 2014 it had risen to over 4,700. Meanwhile, the size of the Cancer Care Unit stayed the same. It was cramped, crowded and privacy for treatment was getting harder to come by.

Comox Valley Hospice Society $16,000 To provide all room furnishings for one of the four new residential hospice beds.

Comox Valley Community Adult Literacy & Learning Society $3,500 To deliver online and in person “Money Matters” program to help lower income learners develop their skills in the areas of budgeting and managing money.

Sid Williams Theatre Society $5,000 To replace the aging theatre curtain system.

The Comox Valley Community Foundation is one of over 170 community foundations in Canada.

Community foundations are charitable organizations dedicated to improving communities within a defined geographic area. They do this by pooling charitable gifts from donors to create endowment funds and using the investment income to make grants. Community foundations are one of the world’s fastest growing philanthropic movements with over 1,000 foundations worldwide.

In 1996, the Comox Valley Community Foundation was established as an independent, volunteer based philanthropic organization created by the residents of the Comox Valley. One of the goals of the foundation is to connect donors to community needs to help build a strong, vibrant, healthy and productive community.

The foundation currently administers 80 funds and supports a wide range of projects. Funded activities often provide a direct service to the community, or take an innovative approach to a community concern.

Twenty years ago, our founders and local visionaries created our Community Foundation to be the conduit whereby individuals and organizations could invest their resources in the vitality and sustainability of our community each and every year.

This year, the foundation was able to provide 20 grants to community organizations including

providing much-needed equipment for the Special Olympics and to help send local athletes to the World Games; to furnish one of the four beds at the Comox Valley Hospice – the realization of the dreams and efforts of many Valley residents for many years; new sports wheelchairs for the Wheelchair Society; and support the Community Arts Council develop a ‘tickle trunk’ of media equipment for the use of community organizations. Each organization helps sustain and build a stronger more vibrant Comox Valley, and we are very pleased to assist in these efforts.

The foundation’s contribution to the community continues to expand. In addition to our traditional financial role, and in partnership with the Social Planning Council, the United Way and others, we will begin to provide ongoing reports on quality of life indicators in the Valley with priorities identified by the community itself. As shown elsewhere, this Vital Signs information will be of value to funders such as ourselves, local governments and the charitable organizations to better address needs and opportunities in the Valley.

Our current board is honoured to be entrusted with this legacy, built by our previous board members and the foundation’s many sponsors, donors and supporters.

2015 marks North Island College’s 40th year of service in our North Island communities.
