When John Oughtred and his new girlfriend Rebecca King Jones arrived at their vacation rental home in Bocas del Toro, Panama at the end of October, it was time for a celebration.

Having just travelled two days to reach the tropical island paradise,

the couple went out for a nice dinner, then cracked open a bottle of wine when they later returned to their property.

Around 2:30 a.m., King Jones went downstairs to get more wine. Instead, she discovered an intruder on the balcony — a masked man draped in camouflage holding a gun. King Jones screamed, prompting Oughtred to

“There wasn’t a lot of time to react,” said Oughtred. “My initial thought was I need to get this guy off the balcony. I just ran at him and tried to get as close as possible to knock the gun out of the way.”

Bridges for Women embracing new home Pamela Roth Victoria News

Harbouring a broken soul from years of abuse in her home country of Guyana, Diane Holder moved from Toronto to Victoria in 2003 to experience warmer winters and connect with nature.

She was homeless at the time and came across a sign at a community centre about Bridges for Women — a non-profit organization that provides employment training and support programs for women impacted by violence or abuse.

Once she found housing a year later, Diane enrolled with Bridges, marking the beginning of a new journey that gave her confidence she never knew she had.

“I experienced a lot of traumas in my life and I was going through a spiritual awakening where I knew why this and that happened and why this person was a part of it,” said Diane. “You have to let it go and move into your life and take responsibility.”

Diane pulled out of the program when she went back to Toronto to visit family and wound up staying there for two years.

During that time, she also went back to Guyana to see if it was a place she could return, but wound up feeling traumatized seeing children being abused like she had.

These are just natural ways of being and people don’t know how unhealthy it is because they don’t have a different experience,” said Diane, who came back to Victoria and reconnected with Bridges.

“When I came in, I was very distraught and not clear on what I would be doing. It felt really daunting doing this whole process again.”

Hearing stories like Diane’s brings tears to Victoria Pruden’s eyes.

Working as the executive director for Bridges,

“In the old space it was a nightmare. On our busiest days we have 60 or 70 women in here taking classes,” said Pruden.

“We create a women’s community here of people that care about each other and care about the future together, and how we’re doing physically, emotionally, spiritually, financially, which you don’t always get, especially in an urban environment where people can be very disconnected.”

Last year, Bridges helped more than 200 women complete full-

time programming and had another 135 intake assessments with referrals to other services. An additional 358 women walked in for support.

Some were experiencing a crisis.

The cases that program manager Jenny Holder sees have more complexity than before now that technology is being used to track people down and harass them. Staff have also been dealing with a lot more cases of women immigrating to Canada with their spouse in search of a better life, only to find

Pruden said the volume of people it serves has grown substantially, forcing the agency to move four months ago into a bigger space and new location on Douglas Street.

Bridges now has double the space it had before, allowing employees to run three full-time classes at the same time and accommodate at least 50 more trauma counselling sessions per month.

As for why Bridges is getting busier, Jenny believes it’s because more women are seeking help.

“It’s always been in the fabric of our communities and that still remains the same. What’s changing is that people are getting help and speaking out and they’re able to break out of those cycles,” she said.

“The more people we can reach, the better off our whole community is when the most vulnerable people are being helped and in turn able to contribute to the community.”

These days, Diane is on the right path towards fulfilling her goals. She lives in Victoria with her mother (who later moved here), found a job with a florist, along with a community of women who’ve helped make her stronger. Seeing the agency expand also fills her with pride.

“They make people think they can do anything. I came away with kick ass confidence,” she said, adding the journey and support blew her mind.

“Everybody has to do it at their own pace. Unless grace touches your life, you can’t pull it all together. It’s (Bridges) somewhere to do that when that little light opens up.”

Bridges for Women was established in Victoria in 1988 and offers women a six-month employment program that prepares them for the workforce, trauma counselling and mentoring, among other programs.

A Victoria author is hoping to de-stigmitize masculine mental health problems by talking to men in vulgar “dude” language as part of a new book.

Before You Die Drunk and Alone is described by the author as an extremely vulgar book about domestic violence and mental health.

The roughly 225page book blends hyper-masculine language, mental health, domestic

violence and comedy to talk about how mental health treatment is a good thing for a man’s sex life.

It includes chapters such as Sex Before Suppertime, Hygiene and Other Bad Habits, Earning Things and Avoiding Hypocritical

Entitlement, the Workplace Sex Snafu, the Infected Penis and Whimps and Jerks Don’t Get Self Esteem.

Author Ryan Levis, who has worked in mental health and addictions for the past four years, said when referring to domestic violence, universities,

government organizations and citizens groups are using politicallycorrect language that’s “acceptable” to the community.

a comedian, I could use an alternative, de-institutionalized language to send a similar message with a more accurate vernacular to their intended audience,” said Levis, a feminist who studied at the Canadian College of Performing Arts

and the University of Victoria.

He said society is moving towards a more progressive and equality-based world and if men don’t get on board with the feminist evolution, they’ll be “left out in the cold,” increasing their isolation and likelihood for being aggressive and angry.

Another topic the book focuses on is the biggest inhibitor to men seeking treatment — being emasculated by other men.

“The benefits of pursing mental health treatment and physical treatment are quite astounding,” he said.

“There’s a lot of male inhibition inside of male-male peer groups where we go “oh, if you get treatment, you’re going to get emasculated by your male peers and if you’re going to discuss your problems they’re going to stigmatize you’.”

Levis has had his own share of problems that led him to seek help. He now credits his treatment with him being a more happy, approachable and healthier person.

Laurence Roberts and Mary Anne Unrau have done what less than 200 vessels have done in the last century — they’ve successfully sailed the Canadian Northwest Passage.

The passage connects the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans through the Arctic Ocean, along the northern coast of North America via waterways through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.

First sailed by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen from 1903-1906, the passage was once explored as a potential trade route, however changes in the pack ice caused by climate change have made the waterway difficult and at times, dangerous to travel.

Enter Roberts and Unrau.

The 67-year-old duo, who have sailed more than 90,000 nautical miles in their boatturned-home, decided to sail the passage from St. Katharines Marina in London, U.K. to the Causeway Marina in Victoria — a so-called home base for the world travellers.

In the past, they’ve sailed from North America to New Zealand, New Zealand to Australia, down to Tasmania and to the French Polynesian.

They also spent a summer in Norway and most recently sailed to Hawaii and Mexico.

The couple have been sailing for the

better half of their life and after retirement, decided to sell their home and see the world through a nautical lens.

“In the cities, it’s dealing with the cultural experience and dealing with another language. Travel without deadlines,” said Roberts, who has been sailing since he was 26 years old. “It’s like a portable home.

It’s more like travelling and being at home at the same time.”

On March 2013, the sailors set off in their 45-foot, 15-year-old steel sailboat Traversay III for the eight-monthlong journey.

The first part of the voyage through the east of the passage offered views of rising cliffs, flocks of birds and tall mountains.

However, the second

half of the passage had its share of challenges.

In the Arctic Ocean, often the boat would get stuck in ice and they would have to wait hours before it would break up so they could carefully float through.

“The uncertainty and having to be up all the time (was a challenge),” said Unrau, a retired school teacher. She said they would get sleep in fourhour intervals.

“When it was time to go, even if it was one in the morning, if the ice was moving towards you, you got going.

It was a big physical challenge for me to stand my watches.”

But moving past the ice opened the boat up to spectacular scenery — air so clear that shores and mountains 50 miles away on

the other side of the channel looked crystal clear, along with a number of polar bears and seals.

“It was all like it was painted on a backdrop.

It was so clear,” Roberts described.

The duo documented their journey and will present a photo journal of it at a fundraising event for the Victoria Baroque Music Society. On Nov. 16 at the Baumann Centre, players will perform to a slideshow presentation of the voyage.

According to Oughtred, the man was known to police and was a suspect in several other tourist robberies in the area.

The struggle with the suspect caused Oughtred to blow his knee, which he had surgery on about a year ago. Since he could barely walk, the pair soon flew back to Panama City and arranged flights to Victoria, turning their 16-day vacation into about a week.

Working as the co-owner of

a coffee and tea business in Victoria, Oughtred has travelled extensively through central and south America. It’s an area he enjoys visiting, but the 38-yearold admits there’s times he has felt uneasy. Nonetheless, Oughtred never expected to become the victim of a crime.

“It can happen anywhere. I wouldn’t put it on the people there. I think it was more the individual than the place,” he said.

“We were so disappointed we weren’t able to hit the beaches.

It’s such a gorgeous place there, but it kind of makes you realize how different the situation could have gone. There’s been a lot of reflection since the incident and a tremendous amount of support from back home.”

Even though the couple were left shaken by the incident, Oughtred would like to return to Panama in the future. In the mean time, the couple has plans to visit Maui for 10 days in December. editor@vicnews.com

Group raising funds to bring Syrian family to Victoria lost everything in the conflict by welcoming them into the community.

“For more than a year, they were the only family remaining in their high rise apartment building.

Their last neighbours, who live across the hall, were killed when their building was bombed in January 2014. The only reason this family survived is because they happened to be out.”

Through the campaign and other fundraising activities, the group is striving to raise $56,000 to support the family during their first year in Canada.

The group also plans to help the family integrate into the community by providing assistance with housing, start-up supplies such as furniture and clothing, English as a second language training and employment.

Search for missing man extends to U.S.

Victoria police have extended their search to the United States for a Victoria man who’s been missing since Nov. 3.

Investigators are working with U.S. law enforcement agencies, including the Port Angeles Police Department, in an effort to find 52-year-old Harold Backer, who last told his wife he was going for a bike ride.

A man matching Backer’s description was later seen leaving Victoria on the Coho ferry.

VicPD Detective Sgt. Kris Rice said they continue to receive tips.

“Tips are important in a missing persons file like this and sometimes it is the smallest detail that helps,” said Rice. “It could be something that appears insignificant that help us bring Harold safely home to his family.”

Backer, a three-time Olympic rower, is described as a Caucasian male at six feet, three inches tall with a medium build. He has green eyes and greying hair.

He was believed to be wearing a red cycling jersey, black riding pants and possibly carrying a black backpack and could be riding his black Cannondale road bike.

So far the group has managed to reach their first goal of raising the $15,000 needed as a deposit before the sponsorship application is submitted to the

Canadian government.

The group has partnered with the InterCultural Association of Greater Victoria, which is allowed to bring in a set number of refugees

every year.

A group of Victoria residents, known as the Fairfield Refugee Sponsorship, has launched a gift-giving campaign to help bring a Syrian refugee family to Victoria and start a new life.

The family of five the group is sponsoring fled Aleppo Syria in March 2015 and are now living in Turkey, where they fled to out of desperation.

The region the family is living, however, is very dangerous with constant gunfire and bombings, according to the local group.

Choose your destination wisely It’s among every traveller’s worst nightmare — you’re on vacation in a dream destination and fall victim to crime.

It recently happened to a Victoria couple who were vacationing on a tropical island in Panama. After travelling two days to reach their destination, the couple — Rebecca King Jones and John Oughtred were celebrating their first night when an armed intruder entered the home they were renting.

Thanks to the quick thinking actions of Oughtred — a former rugby player who tackled the man and tossed him over the balcony — nobody was seriously harmed, aside from Oughtred blowing a knee he had surgery on last year. The story could have had a much different ending, however, and now that the couple is back in Victoria, they’ve had plenty of time to think about various outcomes.

A businessman in the coffee and tea industry, Oughtred has travelled extensively through south and central America. It’s an area he enjoys, but admits he’s felt uneasy at times. He certainly, however, never expected to become the victim of a crime.

Crimes like this can happen anywhere, but tourists are targeted more than others in certain parts of the world. A German woman in her 30s was walking down a busy street with a friend in Buenos Aries in the middle of the afternoon when they were approached by a group of thugs, who cut the straps on their bags and took off with all of their belongings.

It’s easy to get scared about travelling anywhere after hearing stories such as these, but one must look at the number of travellers that fall victim to crime compared to the ones that don’t. There’s a big world out there to be explored, but choose your destination wisely.

Readers respond: Cruise lines working hard with GVHA to reduce emissions In 2015, Victoria welcomed 227 ship calls bringing more than 533,000 passengers and 206,000 crew to the region — a record year. Overall passenger count was up 15 per cent versus 2014 and the overall economic impact to Greater Victoria is close to $100 million annually (Business Research and Economic Advisors (BREA); the Economic Contribution of Cruise Tourism in Victoria, 2012).

The year 2015 was also a record for another cruise-related reason; with the best air overall quality readings over a full cruise season since monitoring began in 2009. In fact during 2015 there was not a single recorded exceedance of any known local, national or international air emission standard related to cruise ships as measured by the B.C. Ministry of Environment’s air monitoring station located in James Bay. The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority (GVHA) has partnered with the B.C. Ministry of Environment, Island Health (formerly Vancouver Island Health Authority), and the James Bay Neighbourhood Association since 2011 to provide air quality monitoring for SO2 in the James Bay area and over this period, GVHA has provided over

$63,000 to maintain the B.C. Ministry of Environment air monitoring station. In 2015, no 24-hour period exceeded Island Health, CRD, B.C., Canada, World Health Organization 24-hour average guidelines and no one-hour period exceeded the B.C., California, Canada, USA EPA, or EU one-hour average guidelines.

And there is further good news.

On Jan. 1 new international maritime regulations (for ships operating within the United Nations’ North American Emission Control Area) came into effect, which legally requires further reductions of ship emissions. These regulations state that all ships operating in the North American Emission Control Area must use diesel fuel that has a 0.1 per cent sulphur limit. Some cruise lines have been granted exemptions by the flag state of the ship (in negotiation with U.S. and Canada) by committing to the installation of scrubbers (exhaust gas cleaning technology) that will reduce emissions beyond those achievable with the use of diesel fuel that has a 0.1 per cent sulphur limit.

With the introduction of scrubber technology, Greater Victoria has also economically benefited as cruise lines have chosen the Esquimalt Graving Docks to dry-dock ships and have scrubbers installed along with other major work. Earlier this year the Crown Princess was in dry-dock to have

scrubbers installed and in December, the Ruby Princess is scheduled to have major work done including the installation of scrubbers. Both of these ships make Victoria a port-of-call during the cruise season.

B.C.’s wild coast is a key reason why the cruise lines choose to sail in our waters and visit Victoria. None take our pristine environment for granted and have introduced several measures to reduce their footprint. In addition to reducing air emissions, cruise lines have taken steps to improve their waste management technology and energy efficiency. Over the last decade, the cruise lines have invested more than $1 billion in technologies that reduce their environmental foot print in the harbours and ports that welcome them. The GVHA will continue to work with them to ensure we protect our environment and increase the positive social and economic impacts the cruise industry brings to Victoria.

Ruth Wallace has been given a new lease on life.

The 88-year-old Victoria senior has been given the gift of sound through new hearing aids from the Miracle-Ear Foundation, a U.S.based company that supports people with a limited income and no other resources for hearing aids.

“The foundation did this and it’s just wonderful,” Wallace said.

Prior to receiving the hearing aids, Wallace had been deaf in her left ear since she was a teenager. She realized something was wrong when she was only 14 years old. She was babysitting her sister’s daughter when she

knocked over a tri lamp, shattering it on the ground.

Wallace, however, didn’t hear a thing.

“That was the first time I had any knowledge that I was deaf in one ear,” she said, adding simple conversations with friends slowly became more difficult to hear.

Decades later, when Wallace was watching TV with her son who had recently been in a car accident, he noted how high her volume was turned up.

“The extra loud sound affected him and I decided that it was time that I get my hearing in order so that I could listen to the TV at a normal level,” she said, adding she knew for years that she had to get hearing aids, but wasn’t able to afford them.

Lana Binks, a registered hearing instrument practitioner with Miracle-Ear in Victoria, put forward Wallace’s application to the foundation.

“She was really struggling to just hear general conversations in all situations and to enjoy socializing,” Binks said. “(Wallace and her son) enjoy watching movies together and she would need it so loud that he wasn’t enjoying it because the sound was blaring at him. So just knowing that it could improve a small situation like that we tend to take for granted. She’s back to a world of hearing.”

Now, after three weeks of finally being able to hear out of both ears, Wallace is hearing a lot of things that she didn’t before, such as the beeping of the crosswalk and having a conversation with her friends.

It was nothing but paint-covered fingers and smiles at the Aberdeen Hospital Tuesday morning.

In the hospital's activity room, several National Geographic magazines are scattered across fruit-pat-

terned table cloths for inspiration. Rollers and blue and orange paint bottles are methodically placed on a table in the corner.

It's quiet until the art work begins, then there is an energetic buzz in the room.

Every week, roughly 10 to 12 residents gather to work on

pieces of art as part of the Embrace Aging through the Arts of Community program.

The program, funded by the Eldercare and Victoria foundations, was started three years ago by Victoria's Johanne Hémond, a recreation therapist with Island Health.

Therapeutic recreation utilizes functional interventions, leisure education and recreation participation to enable people with physical, cognitive, emotional or social limitations to maintain the skills, knowledge and behaviours that will allow them to enjoy leisurely activities.

Hémond’s program is adapted to each resident based on their abilities and needs.

For her work with the program, she was recently presented with the Ingrid Parsons Professional Recognition Award from the British Columbia Therapeutic Recreation Association, which recognizes an individual's energy, drive and commitment to clients and the profession.

“I just really believe in the arts and the healing process of it and just feeling very at peace and the meditative aspect of art,” said

Hémond, a part-time artist. “The emphasis is on building partnership, inclusion and saying to the community 'hello, we exist.' They're still vibrant people creating here.”

Over the last three years, the program, which runs from September to March, has taught residents various art forms including pottery, acrylic painting and collages.

This year, residents are learning about printmaking.

Lena Bazuik was admitted to the care home a few month ago. Aberdeen is the third care home she's been in since she had a stroke last year.

“I feel inspired and I feel happier. Other than that, there's not much you can do in your bedroom,” she said, adding she had no experience with art prior to the program.

“It's a good program. I wish there were more programs like this at care homes.”

The program culminates in an annual art exhibit at the Cedar Hill Recreation Centre in the spring, where residents' work is put on display.

“It satisfies a really deep need for connection,” said Marya Brown, who has been in the program since it began. “It was very exciting, it made me feel like a real artist to see my art up on the wall in an art gallery.”

Since then, the program has expanded to include a once-a-week sitting dance program, which teaches residents various types of dances including flamenco and a Halloween-inspired Thriller dance.

Hémond attributes the success of her programs to establishing

strong relationships with patients.

“They've definitely built a trusting relationship with me for them to even think about doing art,” she said. “It gives them a sense of belonging.

They're my heroes really. Just to have the confidence to do what they do blows my mind. I'm humbled by them.”

The hospital is putting on a craft fair on Nov. 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in which all proceeds from the sales will go towards the art program. kendra.wong@vicnews.com

HarbourCats to host baseball championships The Victoria HarbourCats will be hosting the 2017 Baseball Canada Senior Championships.

The annual tournament declares the best men’s amateur team in Canada, with 10 teams involved from across the country, including a host team entry.

The event is expected to bring more than $1 million in economic benefits to the city.

“This is a tournament and a format we know well and we are excited we’re bringing it to Victoria,” said HarbourCats vice president and general manager Jim Swanson.

“This is another great event for Victoria, which is known for welcoming major national and international tournaments.

Esquimalt wrestler sets sights on gold at nationals Kendra Wong Victoria News

The trip to and from school every day has become routine for Erin Geddie.

The 16-year-old wakes up at 6 a.m., gets ready, makes the drive to the ferry terminal,

hops on the ferry to Campbell River and heads off to school.

After class, she attends wrestling practice or a workout session and usually makes her way back to Victoria on the last ferry home, all while squeezing homework in between.

Despite living in Esquimalt, the Grade 11 student makes the extra hour-and-a-half commute both ways to Carihi Secondary School every day.

She does so for one reason only: for the chance to wrestle with athletes that are not

“There’s a lack of training partners in Victoria this year. There’s a lack of people my size for seniors this year,” Geddie said.

Her wrestling career began four years ago when Esquimalt High School athletic director Mike Thompson approached her and other Rockheights Middle School students to join the team.

As a joke, Geddie and a few friends decided to join the club. She stuck with it and eventually became the only female Grade 8 student to wrestle on a team with mostly boys in grades 9 to 12.

“I love the physical and mental aspect of wrestling. Just the fact that you have to be so mentally tough and strong and you have to be able to deal with whatever comes your way,” said Geddie, who is also a rubgy player.

“You never really know what you're going to do going into a match. You have a plan, but it doesn't always go as planned.

You just have to roll with the punches.”

In a few short years, Geddie has found success on the mat.

In 2014, she brought home a bronze medal from nationals and most recently, she brought home silver during last year's national championships in Fredericton, New Brunswick in the 70 kilos category.

With two medals under her belt, she set her sights even higher this season — bringing home gold at nationals.

Thompson, who is also Geddie's coach, said she has the ability to be an elite-level athlete.

“She’s very methodical in her approach to technique and I think

that’s what sets her apart from her competitors is that she’s very particular in the way she executes all of her technique,” said Thompson, who has coached Geddie for the past four years.

“She has a drive inside that only the high-level elite kids have. It’s not something that can be taught.”

Geddie, along with other B.C. wrestlers who plan on attending nationals in Calgary next year, have the opportunity to learn from some of the best with a nationals train-

ing day on Saturday, Nov. 21 at Esquimalt High.

Clinicians John Pineda and Frank Mensah, two high-performance coaches for B.C Wrestling, will be on hand to teach students how to apply basic skills in a high-performance situation.

Victoria home sales surpass 2014 Price of the average home has risen seven per cent over past year Jacob Zinn Black Press

Sales of homes are up 21.9 per cent in the Greater Victoria region compared to the same time last year, but the increase — both in sales and in property values — has more to do with supply than demand.

Last week, the Victoria Real Estate Board released its report on real estate activity, highlighting 29 consecutive months of sales going up. October saw 734 properties sold, up from 602 in the same month last year, despite fewer listings this year than last year.

“It’s nothing new,” said Guy Crozier, president of the VREB. “It’s just that after two-and-a-half years, it’s really becoming noticeable.

“The inventory of available homes has dropped, and that’s what’s really affecting the market.

Sales are really strong, but the inventory of available houses is getting lower and lower, and it’s starting to have an effect on prices.”

As of Oct. 31, the board surpassed its 2014 sales total of 6,698, having sold 7,257 properties in 10 months. The average price of a single family home in Greater Victoria is $637,853, up from $594,282 in 2014.

The sales to active listings ratio for October sat around 29 per cent.

According to the VREB, a ratio above 25 per cent indicates upward pressure on prices, making it a sellers’ market.

“Prices across the region are basically up 9.5 per cent across the board, and higher in some areas, especially the areas that are close to the core where there’s not a lot of developable property and the supply can’t keep up with the demand,” said Crozier.

A new report from the Victoria Real Estate Board noted October saw an increase in sales from the same time last year, despite fewer listings on the market.

“Although this has been going on for two-and-a-half years, it’s really now starting to make it difficult for buyers to find the right home in the right neighbourhood because the inventory’s dropped so low.”

For Saanich, Crozier said the district is a good example of what’s typical for home sales in the region, reflecting the steady increase in prices since 2013.

“It’s close to the core, but it’s not Victoria, Oak Bay, Fairfield — but it is also not the West Shore,” he said.

Crozier said he’s hopeful that more houses will be listed in the new year, but the supply may still be somewhat constrained.

“I think there will be more houses coming on in the spring,” he said.

“But I don’t think you’re going to see inventory back to the levels of 2011 or 2012 any time soon. It’ll be very difficult for the Victoria market to recover to those levels that quickly.”

B.C. Oil and Gas Commission authority to regulate projects that strip carbon dioxide from raw gas and inject it back into salt water formations deep underground.

“Although we’ve had a look at it over the years and have actually had projects that looked like they might go ahead at some point in time, we find that we don’t have the overall regulatory framework to actually allow and be successful with CCS,” Coleman told the legislature as he introduced the amendments.

One of the changes protects Oil and Gas Commission employees from being named in lawsuits related to their decisions.

In 2008, the B.C. government put in $3.4 million towards a $12 million feasibility study at Spectra Energy’s gas processing facilities at Fort Nelson, one of the largest gas plants in North America. The federal government and the U.S. Department of

Energy also helped fund the study.

Initial results showed saline aquifers more than two kilometres deep could act as permanent storage for CO2, but the project has not yet proceeded to construction, and extracted CO2 is still being vented to the atmosphere.

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington said CCS is a promising technology, but the gas industry in B.C. is responsible for 15 per cent of the province’s greenhouse gas emissions, and venting of CO2 from plants and wells accounts for a quarter of that.

Huntington said the proposed development of liquefied natural gas exports means more CO2 emissions from gas extraction as well as LNG processing.

Clark and Environment Minister Mary Polak are scheduled to join Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other premiers at the latest climate change summit in Paris in early December.

The annual SEMA show in Las Vegas celebrates some of the craziest of car modifications and the most eye-catching new concept vehicles.

The 2015 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show is no exception, with the continent’s best customizers again sharing their vivid imaginations made flesh . . . I mean metal. In recent years, the big mainstream auto manufacturers have increasingly participated, allowing their designers to let their hair down creatively.

The modification business owes its existence to North America but now has now become a global industry believed to be worth $100 billion. The SEMA show is a chance for parts makers and custom shops to show their wares. It’s also a testing ground where the big guys can figure out if their wild ideas could go mainstream.

Sooke History

Sooke naval cadets at the cenotaph, 1920 Elida Peers Contributed

The southeast corner of Sooke’s busiest intersection hosted Sooke’s proud cenotaph in 1920 and during the next three decades. We wish that we could identify the young naval cadets and their leader in this photo, but so far haven’t been able to do so. If anyone can help, please contact us.

While the fenceprotected cenotaph at the corner of Murray and Sooke roads was framed by evergreen trees in this photo, the far background may not be readily visible, though it is actually the outline of Mount Maguire in East Sooke.

Possibly the reason for the fence may have been as protection from roaming

domestic cattle and other animals as there was no pound law until much later on.

The monument stood on the corner of the large farm of John and Margaret Murray, brother Tom and sister Janet Murray, acreage which much later was intersected by Lincroft, Goodmere and Horne roads. Recently, this street corner has been the site of several commercial and medical enterprises, which began with Dr. Norman Goodwin initiating a development there in the 1950s.

Today on Remembrance Day when we gather in central Sooke along the streets at this very corner and watch as the marching groups turn up onto Otter Point Road and onto Eustace

to fall into place at the newest location of the cenotaph, I’m sure we reflect on the generations of patriotic Sooke-area citizens who have always continued to pay respect to the fallen and to those who protect us. Our population of course is much greater today; in 1920 there were but a few hundred souls here.

After the development of the property on the Murray Road corner, the cenotaph was re-located to the corner of Sheilds Road on Sooke Community Association land.

The photo came to us from the collection of Helen Welsh Yost, granddaughter of James Welsh, one of Sooke’s first settlers, who came here from Ireland in the 1860s.

The Sooke Family Resources Society has launched a new initiative, this time with a video to promote its thrift shop, as well as its role in the community.

And its getting a favourable response: the three-minute video has been shortlisted in the B.C. Hydro Community Champions competition to win $10,000.
