Jail time for overly aggressive panhandlers Pair guilty of robbery after victim failed to produce ‘enough’ money to satisfy thieves MONIQUE TAMMINGA Times Reporter

Two overly aggressive panhandlers are behind bars after being sentenced for robbing a man who was also stabbed

while sitting in his car at the Carvolth Bus Exchange in November 2014.

On Oct. 29, in Surrey Provincial Court, Amanda Visona, 30, was sentenced to six months in jail, 18 months probation and a 10-year firearm (weapons) ban.

Her partner, 27-year-old Justin White, was handed 21 months in jail, followed by 18 months probation.

Both were found guilty of robbery.

Originally the couple, were charged with assault with a weapon as well.

On Nov. 7, 2014, at around 7 p.m. the two panhandlers approached the victim,

who was sitting in his parked vehicle, and asked him for money. He gave them some money, however it apparently wasn’t enough. White is alleged to have stabbed the man in the arm and demanded more, police said at the time.

As the two men struggled for the victim’s wallet, Visona rummaged through the vehicle for additional “loot,” said police.

Once the male suspect had removed the remaining money from the wallet, the pair ran westbound toward 200 Street.

Police dogs followed a scent trail to an abandoned home just west of the bus loop. However, the suspects were not located at that time, said police.

Through information sharing and a cooperative effort within the detachment, two people were suggested as possible suspects.

The officers’ suspicions were confirmed when fingerprints were developed from inside the vehicle.

It was determined the impressions belonged to Visona and White. Both are known to police.

Erin and Randy Watkins were not present for their moment of victory, but their efforts did not go unrecognized when Langley Township council approved tougher construction noise restrictions.

A moment before the Nov. 2 vote, councillor Kim Richter extended thanks to the

couple for bringing the issue before council.

“Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Watkins,” Richter said.

Then council quickly and unanimously approved new rules that will require builders to start later and shut down earlier.

Interviewed after the vote, Erin Watkins called the outcome “amazing” when The

Times asked for her reaction.

“Surprised, honestly, that two little people could make that kind of change,” Watkins said.

In May 2014, the couple came to council with a 46-signature paper petition and a 50-signature online petition, asking council to tighten the most permissive noise regulations in the Lower Mainland.

They said they had experienced four years of “constant, constant, constant noise,” from housing construction near their 68 Avenue residence.

The Township noise bylaw, which had not been updated since 1988, allowed construction work between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Big rig truck park unlikely to go ahead: Township council Councillors had ‘active discussion’ about controversial proposal at meeting with Surrey counterparts D AN F ERGUSO N Ti me s Re po r t e r

The odds are against a controversial proposal to build a 77-acre truck park on 16 Avenue at the Surrey-Langley border, based on what members of Surrey council have told their Langley Township counterparts.

“It may not even get to council,” Langley mayor Jack Froese said following a dinner meeting of the two councils in late October.

Froese said there was “quite an active discussion” at the informal session with Surrey council about the notion of a heavy truck facility in the area south of 16 Avenue near 192 Street.

Froese said he was told that the truck park proposal might not even make it to Surrey council because of the various regulatory hurdles it would have to clear.

“They (project proponents) have a long road to go,” Froese said.

At the meeting, councillor Bob Long said Surrey mayor Linda Hepner promised as a “good neighbour” to keep Langley Township updated.

Opponents of the proposal have warned the truck park could damage the nearby Little Campbell River, a salmon and trout spawning area.

Brian Coote, of Friends of Hazelmere Campbell Valley told an Oct. 19 meeting of Township council that the truck park could contaminate Brookswood groundwater and called on Langley to formally oppose the proposal.

Another critic, Sofi Hindmarch, told the

same meeting the parking facility is in an ecologically sensitive area where at least 13 and as many as 22 threatened species live.

Councillor Kim Richter proposed a council vote to condemn the project, but agreed to a postponement in light of the discussion with Surrey.

Richter said her take on the dinner meeting is that Surrey councillors view big rig parking as a major issue that needs to be resolved, and they consider it a regional problem that the provincial government should address.

Details of the meeting with Surrey were revealed during debate at the Nov. 2 evening meeting of Township council, which voted to put off taking a position on the project until there is a detailed plan to look at, assuming the proposal ever gets to that stage.

“This isn’t the time for this (a vote on formal opposition to the proposed facility),” mayor Froese said.

“I don’t think a motion to oppose something we haven’t seen is a good idea,” councillor Angie Quaale said.

Council did vote to have Township staff communicate with their Surrey counterparts about the proposal.

The idea first surfaced at Surrey council during discussion of industrial development in the South Campbell Heights area.

It came from Surrey Councillor Tom Gill, who said with an estimated 1,300 big rigs parking illegally throughout the city, something needs to be done to find parking spaces.

The truck park would allow truckers to wash their rigs, change oil and tires, and would include washroom facilities.

Gill said he would insist on the highest environmental standards so there would be no impact on the Little Campbell River.

A crash on 208 Street near 45A Avenue closed the road for several hours on Tuesday.

A Cadillac Escalade was travelling north when it left the road at around 9:35 a.m., smashing into a power pole and a light post, and dragging a bus shelter over a fence.

The 67-year-old driver was taken to hospital to be checked out but didn’t have any injuries, said Langley RCMP. No one was walking near or sitting at the bus shelter at the time of the crash.

The driver told police he doesn’t remember the crash, so at this point police believe it was a medical incident.

Campbell Watershed Society, said the Little Campbell River is an important salmon spawning area, home to spring, coho and chum salmon, as well as steelhead and cutthroat trout. “The Little Campbell, believe it or not, is one of the most productive steelhead rivers in the Lower Mainland,� Milligan said.

Because it’s a relatively small river, any pollutants entering the water could be devastating for the fish population, he said. “How do they keep the effluent, all the chemicals, all the brake fluids, the antifreeze — how to they keep all of the oils out of the river?�

Top crime areas pinpointed Most offences in City not violent, but petty crimes, says RCMP Supt.

Langley RCMP have pinpointed the top two areas for criminal activity in the City of Langley.

Data analysis of 91 “atoms,” or small geographic areas, in the City have determined that the number one spot for property and person offences is between the blocks of 203 Street and 204 Street, from Army & Navy South to 53 Avenue.

The second highest atom runs between 201 Street and 203 Street from Fraser Highway down to 56 Avenue.

These two zones account for 17 out of 108 person offences that happened in the third quarter of 2015 and 81 out of 550 property crimes.

The majority of these offenc-

es are petty crimes, not serious, Langley RCMP Superintendent Murray Power told The Times.

“We don’t have a body count here, we don’t have serial offenders … there are a lot of things that aren’t happening that we should be happy about,” he said.

Nevertheless, the RCMP have been working closely with the City to look at environmental factors that may contribute to crime.

“Typically where there’s higher concentrations of people, there tends to be a higher concentration of dots on the map.

That has something to do with the fact that there is a cluster of businesses there and more people are drawn to it,” said StaffSgt. Dave Carr.

“We’ll look at those dots on the map and physically go there

day and night and say, ‘OK, why is that happening here?’ Is it a matter of lighting?

“It is a matter of just sight lines? Is it just a good place to hide? We look at all of those kinds of factors.”

The first atom encompasses many residential units, whereas the second, which runs from Save-on-Foods to Gabby’s Country Cabaret to the Stop ‘n Shop Convenience Store is more small-business-oriented.

“In general, the City … it does have an older City core and it wasn’t built with crime prevention principles in mind,” Carr said.

“And so, as the City is growing … we’re starting to experience some of the stuff that happens in a lot of larger cities.

“So we have to start looking a bit closer at ‘OK, why here?’”

Randy Watkins, who worked an early shift, said the noise had left him sleep-deprived and stressed.

On one Sunday, he said, an excavator fired up while they were having guests over.

“It was embarrassing,” Watkins said.

He said a search of construction noise limits in other Lower Mainland communities found none as lenient as Langley (a claim that would later be supported by a municipal staff investigation).

The response was not encouraging.

Some members of council were reluctant to tighten the bylaws.

Then-councillor Grant Ward observed that the noise would eventually end, once the housing was finished and then-councillor Bev Dornan worried it would be a bad idea to change the rules in the summer, during what she called “prime building season,” in Langley.

“We walked away feeling really defeated,” Erin Watkins recalls.

But several months later, they read that a staff report to council was recommending shorter hours of construction and an outright ban on Sunday construction unless specific permission was obtained.

When council gave the new rules preliminary approval, they

were delighted.

“This is all we ever wanted,” Erin Watkins said.

Now, with final approval, the Township has posted an advisory on the municipal website that alerts resi-

dents and builders to “significant changes to construction activity times.”

Construction activity and operation of construction equipment is only allowed between 7 a.m. and 8

p.m. from Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and is not permitted at all on Sundays or statutory holidays, though exemption can be granted on a case-by-case basis.

Enrolment is up in Langley schools.

According to Langley School District secretary-treasurer David Green, a total of 262 additional full-time students enrolled in Langley schools for the 2015/16 year. This year, 18,772 students are attending Langley schools.

Green provided the report at the board of education meeting on Oct. 27.

If the Ministry of Education approved that total, it could mean an additional funding of $1 million above the $157.5 million received.

But it is already spent, warned Green.

“The extra money already has been allocated to special needs students and classroom support,” said Green.

Also, 119 fewer students enrolled in alternate and continuing education programs this year, translating to $813,000 less funding from the government.

Green said the majority of the loss is coming from lower enrolment at Vanguard alternative school. Green said they don’t know why yet, but those students may show up later and the government will then compensate the district.

The district is expecting an additional $167,232 for its unique student needs category.

The district was scheduled to submit its spending plan to the Ministry on Oct. 31.

The province has increased education funding from $75 million to $100 million across B.C. That translates to about $500,000 more to Langley, said Langley Teachers’ Association president Gail Chaddock-Costello.

With applause from parents in the audience, the board of education moved to include students in kindergarten through Grade 6 in the Montessori program at Uplands Elementary on an ongoing basis.

“I beg you make it a permanent Grade 6 so parents can feel some stability in their children’s education,” said parent Lisa Atkinson in a plea to the board before the vote.

The Montessori program works on threeyear modules. While the unique program has been offering Grade 6, it has only done so on a year-toyear basis, pending approval by the board.

This has put parents in a difficult position once their children reach Grade 3, wondering if the three-year module will carry forward.

The Montessori program has been in place at Uplands since 2003 and the program has grown steadily. For the past two years the program has included Grade 6. The goal is to continue offering more grades in the future.

Assistant superintendent Claire Guy presented a case in support of the program’s strength, despite being ill with a cold.

“I hugely believe in this program. I’m sick but I needed to be here,” she told the board at its October meeting.

The Fall Clean Up Langley Days harvested half a ton of garbage from locations where trash is not permitted.

The Township reported Monday that 450 kg or 992.08 lbs of waste was removed from various locations during the Oct. 24 event.

Volunteers donned bright yellow safety vests and protective gloves to collect household waste, abandoned furniture and even the occasional election campaign sign.

The Times captured the moment when a disgusted Sharon Montgomery hauled out a bag of household garbage that was dumped in a vacant lot near 86 Avenue and 201 Street.

“That’s just the part that didn’t fall out,” Montgomery said.

It was the second cleanup of the year, following an April event that collected close to two tonnes of waste.

Don’t assume you’ll be seen We’ve all been there, driving down a poorly lit stretch of road in the pouring rain, desperately trying to make out the lane markers and trying to see past the windshield wipers, screeching at full speed.

All of a sudden a cyclist or another car veers into your lane, or worse, your own car begins hydroplaning out of control.

It’s a nightmare no motorist wants to experience, but unfortunately it leads to tragic results seen too often by first responders. Slowing down for poor road conditions may be logical, but it’s a strategy often forgotten by drivers anxious to reach their destination and surging forward at dangerous speeds.

Between November and January, speed-related crashes resulting in injuries or fatalities increase by more than 50 per cent across the province, according to ICBC. There are on average 250 crashes a month in those months, including about 40 on Vancouver Island. Driving too fast for the conditions is a major factor.

It’s the time of year when the days get darker by the minute and the weather is a far cry from summer sunshine. During these winter months, many motorists find themselves spending more time behind the wheel after dark.

While it is crucial that motorists exercise more caution, pedestrians, cyclists and other road users share a responsibility to make themselves seen in the dark.

Non-drivers may think they’re visible to motorists, but wearing reflective clothing, installing lights on a bike, or carrying a flashing light of some sort is the best way to help ensure you’ll be seen.

To the joggers, walkers, cyclists and other road users out there, don’t assume you’ll be seen.

Leaving your safety to chance is not something you want to risk your life on.

My nephew in Calgary has warned me of where that chair will end up if I ever send him that picture again.

He always says that he is just waiting for the big West Coast earthquake and when Vancouver tumbles into the Pacific, he won’t gloat, he’ll just smile, safe and sound behind the cover of the Rocky Mountains.

A friend of mine was hired as the fire chief in Fort Nelson a few years back.

He arrived there in August, leaving his career in North Vancouver.

In mid-September the firefighters began taking out eight-foot sign posts with pictures of fire hydrants on them.

When the new chief inquired, they advised him the signs were put by the hydrants so they could find them in the snow in the winter. He had never seen those signs in North Vancouver.

My geraniums started blooming again last weekend, I’m not sure how to winterize them. They say winter temperatures will be five to seven degrees higher this year, so don’t pack your shorts away yet.

At least that’s what McGregor says.

Room to improve in public engagement process Editor: Like many residents I have been dissatisfied by the process and outcomes for development planning in the Langley Township.

Fortunately, the mayor and council responded to this widespread dissatisfaction by striking a mayor’s standing committee on public engagement to improve how citizens are engaged in planning and development processes that affect them.

Those of you who missed the three open house events can still participate through the Township public engagement web page.

In addition to the opportunity to submit your ideas on effective public engagement, you can also review the excellent background information that was presented

in the open houses (click on the display boards link).

This information includes themes from interviews of councillors and citizens as well as best practices in engagement and planning arising from experience in other municipalities and jurisdictions.

It is instructive to read these best practices and reflect on whether our Township’s existing policies, procedures and practices measure up. The only conclusion can be that there is a lot of room for improvement.

I am heartened by the mayor and council’s willingness to acknowledge this fact and to take concrete steps towards improvement. Many of us in the Township will be watching closely to

ensure that substantive changes are made.

Coincidentally, the day after I attended an open house there was an article in the Langley Times (Fort developer seeks input on new project, Oct. 21) I read the article with mixed emotions. On the one hand I was encouraged by the developer’s efforts to pro-actively engage the community in a planning and design process for a proposed commercial development in Fort Langley.

On the other hand, my heart sank as it became clear that the process was flawed and will not lead to a shared vision of the future of Fort Langley.

Clinching this conclusion was the fact that the developer has

taken the position that this new development should be three storeys high. Those familiar with the Coulter Berry building issue know this will be a lightning rod for conflict in Fort Langley.

I am not condemning the developer for pursuing its commercial enterprises.

I am not trying to pull up the drawbridge and stop any further development.

I am, however, tired and frustrated with the lack of leadership and citizen participation in planning my community’s future.

I do not want to endure another round of community conflict and division like we experienced with the Coulter Berry development.

There is an opportunity to do things differently in the Town-

vey-Renner and the rest at the Township fail to remember is that they work for a government, and thus they are there to serve the people.

If they were really in the line of work of serving the people then they would be willing to take a huge salary cut, and be paid a fair salary that we, the residents of Langley, feel they are entitled to.

I believe the mayor and council need to review the compensation packages of these “top-earners” and bring them down to real-world numbers where the rest of the residents of the Township of Langley live.

I, for one, am not willing to pay more municipal taxes to keep these people high-onthe-hog.

For her to think that they are worth over-payment for their positions because they feel that their salaries reflect a high level of skill, education and training that somehow the rest of us don’t seem to have, is baloney.

I didn’t expect them to come out and say, “Yes, we are overpaid and love it and want to keep it that way,” but for her to say that somehow they are smarter and better educated than the rest of us, thus they get paid more, is nonsense.

It is a known fact, that working for government is lucrative.

Engine brake enforcement would be nice Editor: (Re: New noise limits a step closer, The Times, Oct. 23) It would have been nice if the Township had paid attention to existing bylaws and perhaps considered enforcement regarding the use of engine brakes on Fraser highway heading westward downhill to 216 Street.

It seems every truck has an “emergency” and is using its engine brake.

Neither the Township, the RCMP, nor the bylaws department is willing to enforce the existing bylaw.

Perhaps the commercial vehicle inspection team should set up a work station at the bottom of the

hill and check the brakes on each vehicle. If all these trucks need their engine brake on this little hill, then there is a bigger problem than noise.

Mel and Cathy Jesson were greeted by an army of smiling students at Douglas Park Elementary on Friday (Nov. 6) as they delivered 1,000 new books for the school’s library.

“I’ve got goosebumps,” said Cathy, president of Black Bond Books.

“It’s so much fun.

This is genuine.”

The Jessons made the generous donation after hearing that Douglas Park had been disqualified from an Indigo competition to win $10,000 for their library.

Indigo has since announced that there were errors in their competition and they will still be donating $10,000 and 445 books to the school.

Douglas Park Elementary School student Jerry Qiu admired one of 1,000 new books donated to the school’s library by Cathy and Mel Jesson of Black Bond Books.

Cathy hand-selected 700 of the 1,000 titles, and another 100 were donated by a local publishing distributor.

“It’s one of those things I think will grow, because I’ve

shared it with some of my independent book sellers from across Canada, and I said ‘if you can come up with a school in need and help them out, it pays back,’” Cathy said.

The students were ecstatic as they tore open the boxes and flipped through the new books during their recess break on Friday.

“It’s overwhelming,” said Esther Schmit, principal at Douglas Park Elementary.

“Their faces are lighting up and they are just so happy to be sitting down and sorting through the books, picking their favourites and sharing with each other — it’s awesome.”

Each classroom will receive 100 books — or four new books per child — giving them new reading material to learn from.

“That’s just terrific,” Schmit said.

“I think the next big thing is buying book cases, but that’s a good problem to have.”

Should the opposition be able to second-guess decisions of bureaucrats by going through their emails?

The traditional answer is no. Elected officials are responsible, even if they had no actual role, as should always be the case in hiring and firing ministry staff and awarding government work contracts. The buck stops with Lake and Clark, not their deputies.

There are sound reasons for this. Consider another sensitive decision, to shoot wolves from the air in a lastditch effort to preserve dwindling mountain caribou herds.

Protesters, pop stars and politicians can sound off as they like, but these hard decisions are made and carried out by wildlife experts working for or consulted by the province.

The minister, in this case Forests Minister Steve Thomson, authorizes the use of helicopters and rifles and takes the political consequences.

One can imagine the agonizing discussion that goes on behind the scenes, as provincial and First Nations wildlife experts watch caribou herds dwindle despite widespread habitat protection efforts. They not only make the technical call, they have to pull the trigger.

Would wildlife biologists be able to provide frank advice for or against this decision if they knew their names and opinions could later be used in a political battle in the legislature and in the streets? No. And can you run a public service if everyone is subjected to the scrutiny that only politicians choose to endure? No. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

Construction of a new Vector Aerospace helicopter repair facility at Langley airport is underway.

A report from airport manager Guy Miller to Township council says completion of the 104,000 square foot building on the north side of the airport has been scheduled for January, 2016.

A Vector spokesperson told The Times the company expects to hold a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony in March or April.

The relocation from the current 66,000 square foot building to a bigger building was first announced in February, 2012.

The new facility is expected to add a further 180 jobs, attract additional major investments and nearly double the technical activity and production of the airport.

In the original press release announcing the expansion, Elvis Moniz, vice-president of operations at Vector-Langley said the new facility would include a state-of-the-art paint booth capable of handling bigger

aircraft like the Sikorsky S-61 and AS332 Super Puma along with three helipads to accommodate customer “fly-in” requirements.

Vector in Langley carries out a wide range of major helicopter repairs, inspections and overhauls, including rebuilds and refurbishments, airframe and avionic refits and upgrades and custom interiors and modifications.

Donations of new socks and underwear, blankets, winter coats, women’s and children’s clothing, men’s shoes and blankets are needed most. The drive also accepts sleeping bags and other warm clothing including jeans, pants, sweaters, scarves, gloves, mitts and hats.

Last year, 152 bags of blankets and clothing were collected in Langley — their largest amount in 20 years.

Canadian Immigrant Magazine will be in Vancouver next week with its free expo for newcomers — the Career, Education and Settlement Fair.

The Langley Minor Hockey Association tournament was won by the Seafair Islanders with Langley placing fifth after a 2-3 record.

That’s because for the first time in school history — and the first in her 20-year cross country coaching career at R.E. Mountain Secondary — the Eagles have captured the provincial blue banner. “Absolutely I believed they had it in them,� she said. “This is a very talented group of young guys and they also have the determination. “Just an incredibly determined group.�

The Eagles won the junior boys team provincial title under less than ideal conditions on Saturday at Vancouver’s Jericho Beach Park.

Mountain was led by Zach Wyatt,

who finished the course in 18:11.55. “The time wasn’t great but that was the hardest race I ever ran,� admitted the 15-year-old.

He was referring to the conditions, which saw a torrential downpour combined with heavy winds.

The course was like running in a mud pit. “It took a lot of energy not to slip and trying to stay balanced.�

Wyatt’s time was second among those schools which were involved in the team competition and fourth overall.

Twin brother Tate Wyatt was sixth overall and Jordan Schmidt was 12th. But in the team portion, they scored two, three and six points, respectively, which put them in great shape. The team title goes to the school with the lowest combined

number among their top four runners.

So when Danny Lee crossed the finish line two and a half minutes later, his 55 points gave the Eagles a score of 66, which was four better than second place Dover Bay’s 70.

Had Lee been 10 seconds slower, Mountain would not have won the title. “The school is just incredibly proud of these kids,� McKinnon said, adding that a busload of about 20 or 30 Mountain students spent their Saturday in the rain cheering their classmates on. “I didn’t really expect (to win the banner), I don’t think any of us really did,� Tate Wyatt said. “But it feels great.�

The Eagles finished with an average time of 19:17.17.

••• The Walnut Grove Gators came fourth in both the junior girls and senior boys competitions, while the Gator senior girls were eighth.

The junior team of Grace Chalk, Sarah Buckingham, Kelsey Stelnick and Samantha Matthewman had an average time of 20:15.79.

The senior boys squad of Ford McMahon, Paul Buckingham, Ethan Carlson and Will Riley completed the course in an average of 24:40.62.

And the senior girls quartet of Isabella Boccia, Chelsea Borrowdale, Emma Deardon and Breanne Dejong finished in an average of 20:36.66.

Individually, Brookswood’s Louise Forsyth cracked the top 10 with a time of 18:25.

Mission accomplished for Brooke Mussche. “My goal was just to work hard, and mainly, just to come top three,� she explained.

And that is exactly what she did, finding the podium with a third-place finish on Saturday at the B.C. high school cross country provincial championships.

The race was held at Vancouver’s Jericho Beach Park.

The Grade 9 student at Langley Christian, finished the course in 18:31, three seconds ahead of fourth place.

She was 30 seconds behind gold-medal winner Annika Austin of Kitsilano and 10 seconds behind Sentinel’s Rhian Paterson for the silver medal.

It was Mussche’s first time running this particular course.

As for the race-day conditions, Mussche said she enjoyed it. “I like running on the trails when it is rainy and muddy,� she explained.

Mussche also ran at the junior provincial championships last year as a Grade 8 student, and finished seventh overall. Last month, she captured the Fraser Valley cross country individual title.

••• The North Langley atom Bears won their first playoff game of the day on Saturday, 22-0, but ran out of steam in game two, falling 30-0 to the first-place Meadow Ridge Knights.

The fifth-place Bears were in Chilliwack for the playoff tournament, and got off to a great start, knocking off the Mission 9ers 22-0.

Rylan Middleton, Evan Hoy and Damon Bernemann scored a touchdown apiece in the win, while Ryan Heutink added a twopoint convert.

Rowan Engele, Gideon Bodill and Lucca Patterson had solid games along the offensive line, opening up holes for the running backs and quarterback Ben Evans.

Reece Fennell also had a good game running the ball.

The defensive line of Lucas Laroche, Ronan Langford, Tyson Lennox and Heutink helped clog the middle while Aiden McMurtry and Alyson Courtney were there to swoop in for tackles.

Jesse Davison, Brendan Schartner and Lucas Reimer also got some reps along the d-line and helped keep the Mission attack at bay.

The second game saw some good efforts — on offence Marcus MacLeod muscled the ball up the gut while defensively, Laroche came up with a pair of fumble recoveries — but the team could not find the end zone, losing by a 30-0 score.

••• The North Langley Bears bantam football team ran into a formidable foe, the undefeated South Delta Rams.

And the end result was a 33-0 Rams victory on Sunday as South Delta smothered the North Langley offence.

Bright spots included Alex Henderson, who had a fumble recovery, while Connor Hurley, Jacob Ronald and K’Paw Shee Htoo led the defence in tackles.

••• Ryan Goeson had the lone score but that was not enough as North Langley lost 13-6 to Meadow Ridge Blue Knights in a peewee football playoff game.

Manny Fotiou and Nicolas Reimer had strong games for the defence.

Rams lineman honoured Langley Rams’ defensive lineman Brock Gowanlock was among those named an all-Canadian by the Canadian Junior Football League.

The CJFL announced the league all-stars last week (Nov. 5).

Gowanlock had 17 tackles, five assists, 14.5 quarterback sacks, one knockdown, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery for a touchdown this past season.

His 14.5 quarterback sacks led the entire CJFL.

Bronze for Kodiaks at B.C.’s For a second straight year, the Credo Christian Kodiaks return home with the bronze medals.

The senior boys soccer team was in Kamloops for the Single A soccer provincial championships over the weekend, losing just once in five games.

But as luck would have it, that loss came in the semifinals to the defending champi-

Opposing goaltenders were no match for the Langley atom A1 Eagles.

The Eagles were never held to less than five goals, scoring a combined 53 goals over six games to win the gold medal at the Kamloops Minor Hockey Association atom A tournament Nov. 6 to 8.

The closest challenger to Langley was the host Kamloops side, which fell 6-4 in the gold medal game.

Kamloops also held Langley to five goals during pool play, a 5-2 Eagles win.

In the team’s other games, they beat Vernon and Kelowna by identical 7-1 scores, hammered Abbotsford 19-1 and then beat Kelowna 9-2 in the semifinals. ••• After not having their legs for game one, the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds bounced back to earn the split against the Cariboo Cougars in B.C. Major Midget Hockey League action.

The Thunderbirds went to Prince George and showed tired legs on Saturday, losing 4-1 with Kyle Davis netting the lone goal. The score would have been even more one-sided if not for the efforts of T-Birds’ goalie Paul Tucek.

But Sunday was a different story as the Fraser Valley offence came to life in a 5-4 win. Davis, Kaelen Anderson, Mackenzie Wight, Matthew Dyck and Justin Plett scored while Jordan Naylor picked up the win between the pipes. ••• It was mixed results for Trinity Western Spartan athletic teams over the weekend as they combined to go 4-5.

The women’s volleyball team improved to 6-0 with a pair of victories but the men’s team was 0-for-2 to fall to 3-3 on the season.

In basketball, the TWU women went 1-1 to open the season while the men’s team was 0-2.

While future NHL players battle on the ice Saturday night, a pair of NHL legends will be in the stands at the Pacific Coliseum.

Guy Lafleur and Dennis Hull will be on hand at the Vancouver Giants Western Hockey League tilt against the Portland Winterhawks as part of White Spot Legends Night.

The pair will meet with 100 fans after the game as part of a partnership between the Giants and the Scotiabank Hockey for Alzeheimer’s tournament.

“Our involvement with the Scotiabank Hockey for Alzheimer’s tournament started because of our relationship with Gordie Howe, and the efforts of the Gordie and Colleen Howe Foundation to raise money for dementia research,” said Dale Saip, the Giants vice-president of business development. “We are honoured as an organization to participate with hockey legends like Dennis and Guy in their support of this worthwhile cause.”

Lafleur played 17 seasons in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Quebec Nordiques, winning five Stanley Cups. He is the all-time leading scorer with the Canadiens and is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Hull played 14 seasons in the NHL, all but one with the Chicago Blackhawks, and was a fivetime All-Star.

The Giants are looking to snap an nine-game winless streak after they lost 2-1 to Kamloops last Friday, 3-2 to Everett the following night and 2-1 in a shootout to Kelowna on Wednesday.

Toyota Dream Car Art Contest invited Canadian youth to Dream About the Future of Mobility Toyota Canada is launching the 2016 Toyota Dream Car Art Contest for the creative minds and passionate hearts of Canadian youth to design their vision for the future of mobility.

Canadians are invited to encourage youth up to 15 years of age to submit artwork conveying their vision of transportation.

In the last three years, three Canadian entries were chosen as a global finalist.

Over that time, more than two million entries were submitted from over 80 countries.

Contest submissions are accepted for three age categories: under eight, 8-11, and 12-15. Submissions for artwork entries began, November 2, 2015, and will run until February 26, 2016.

One winner and two runners-up in each age category will be selected by a panel of judges.

Each of these nine winners will receive a seven-inch, 8GB tablet with WiFi, and also entered as Canada’s representatives in the world contest.

From the global entries, 10 finalists from each of the three age categories will be announced next August.

All 30 finalists, along with both parents/ guardians for each, will be invited to Japan on an all-expenses-paid trip courtesy of Toyota Motor Corporation.

Artwork submissions can be created with any type of medium such as paint, markers or crayons but must not be created digitally.

All artwork must be made on paper no smaller than letter (A4) and no larger than tabloid (11-12 X 16.5-18 inches) size paper and needs to feature a coloured background. The contest is open to all residents of Canada.

Toyota to establish Silicon Valley artificial intelligence and development company

Toyota has announced it will establish a new company, Toyota Research Institute Inc. (TRI), as an R&D enterprise with an initial focus on artificial intelligence and robotics.

The headquarters will be located in Silicon Valley near Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, U.S.A. A second facility will be located near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A. The new company will begin operations in January 2016.

Toyota believes artificial intelligence has significant potential to support future industrial technologies and the creation of an entirely new industry.

To underscore this belief, it is making an initial investment of $1 billion over the next five years, to establish and staff the two initial locations and conduct operations. The investment is in addition to the $50 million investment over the next five years with MIT and Stanford to establish joint fundamental artificial intelligence research centers at each university.

TRI will help bridge the gap between fundamental research and product development.

Its primary mission is to accelerate R&D in a range of fields to help resolve society’s future challenges by using artificial intelligence and big data. Thereby, contributing to a sustainable future where everyone can experience a safer, freer, and unconstrained life.

Chevrolet and drivers from the Ron Fellows Corvette high-performance driving school at the Spring Mountain track recently demonstrated Stingray models enhanced with components from a new lineup of Z06-based performance parts.

They’re designed for 2014+ Stingray models, including Z51-equipped cars.

Ron Fellows, champion Corvette Racing driver, collaborated with Chevrolet Performance engineers on the all-new portfolio.

Many will be used in cars in the new Michelin Corvette Challenge racing series, which was developed with Fellows and will run a 15-race schedule starting in February 2016.

“Here at Spring Mountain, we drive the Corvette Stingray and Z06 at their limits nearly every day, so we’re in a unique position to recognize the parts

that are most effective,” said Ron Fellows. “ The effect of the new, Z06-based parts on the Stingray’s track capability is dramatic.

They take the Stingray’s already great stopping and cornering capabilities to yet another exciting level of stability and precision.”

Most of the Z06 parts are offered as direct replacements for the Stingray’s original parts.

Performance is driven by the standard LT1 6.2-litre V8, rated at 460 hp and 465 lb/ft of torque with the available exhaust system, and backed by a seven-speed manual transmission with Active Rev Match.

Carole is lovingly remembered by Jim; her three children David (Glenda), Heather (John) and Christie (Declan); her six grandchildren Jessica, Joshua, Reece, Jordan, Jane and Kieran; and her many caring extended family members. Carole was born to Jack and Greta Girling in Birmingham, England on November 24th, 1943 and emigrated to Canada with her parents at the age of seven. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, tending to her gardens and watching musical productions.

February 9, 1926 - November 9, 2015 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother Alice.

She was predeceased by her first husband John Sears in 1989 and her second husband Bev Joslin in 1999.

She is survived by her loving children, Lea (Shawn) O’Shea, Lori (Steve) Paulgaard, Kevan (Hyatinte) Sears, her 10 grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.

Alice loved adventure, she traveled extensively, she was a selftaught piano player and loved to sing, but her biggest passion was teaching, she taught at Elgin, the last one room school in Surrey from 1962-1984, she loved to share her fond memories of all the children that passed through her classroom. She lived in Crescent Beach from 1958-1985.

Our mother will be missed by all that knew her.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, November 14th at Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home, 45865 Hocking Ave in Chilllwack - with graveside and reception to follow.
