Museum exhibit connects community to First World War Photos and artifacts from the Museum’s collection bring history to life

R

emembrance Day is not only a time to pay tribute to veterans of any war or conflict past or present, but also to consider how the local community was impacted by such times in history.

The Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery is currently showcasing an exhibit called ‘The King Will Take Off His Hat to the Canadians’ which runs through to Feb. 7th. It’s the second of what will ultimately be a four-part exhibition that tells the stories of Central Albertans from the First World War. The actual title - ‘The King Will Take Off His Hat to the Canadians’ - comes from the diary of a local soldier C.B. Whyte, which he recorded on May 2nd, 1915.

The comment was made by someone Whyte had been talking with about the Second Battle of Ypres. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Second Battle of Ypres, and also the writing of In Flanders Fields by Canadian physician Lieut. Col. John McCrae who was originally from Guelph, Ontario.

As Val Miller, curator of collections for the the Museum pointed out, Cecil Whyte’s diaries - which contain the quote - are in the local archives. He was killed in 1918. He and his two brothers went to war, but only one returned - Reg, who eventually opened Whyte Motors in Red Deer some time later.

“In the diary post, Cecil is talking about the Second Battle of Ypres and the loss of Canadians,” said Miller, adding that Canadian soldiers showed significant courage in helping to fend off the enemy during the battle.

“He writes that one British soldier said to him, ‘The King would take off his hat to the Canadians’.

“What happens was that was the first time the Germans used gas on the western front,” she said. “Everybody else flees, but the Canadians hold the ground.

There’s all sorts of debate as to why and what happened, but regardless, they did.”

According to Veterans Affairs Canada, “Following an intensive artillery bombardment, (the Germans) released 160 tons of chlorine gas from cylinders dug into the forward edge of their trenches into a light northeast wind.

“As thick clouds of yellow-green chlorine drifted over their trenches the French defences crumbled, and the troops, completely bemused by this terrible weapon, died or broke and fled, leaving a gaping 6.5 kilometre hole in the Allied line.

“German troops pressed forward, threatening to sweep behind the Canadian trenches and put 50,000 Canadian and British troops in deadly jeopardy.”

In addition they mounted a counter-attack to drive the enemy out of Kitcheners’ Wood, an oak plantation near St. Julien.

In the morning two more attacks were made against enemy positions. Little ground was gained and casualties were extremely heavy, but these attacks bought some precious time to close the flank, notes the web site.

The battle of St. Julien lay ahead.

“Another violent bombardment was followed by another gas attack in the same pattern as before. This time the target was the Canadian line. Here, through terrible fighting, withered with shrapnel and machine-gun fire, hampered by their issued Ross rifles which jammed, violently sick and gasping for air through soaked and muddy handkerchiefs, they held on until reinforcements arrived.

“Thus, in their first major appearance on a European battlefield, the Canadians established a reputation as a formidable fighting force.”

And thus the striking quote in Cecil’s diary, which in its entirety reads, “After church parade, came back to the hut and read Lloyd’s ‘Weekly’ which gave us the Canadian Casualty list of the week. It was awful - 6,000 Canadians put out of the fight in one engagement. But they saved the whole line of allies and this victory will go down in history. We have a great reputation to uphold! As one English soldier said to me, The King will take off his hat to the Canadians.”

The Museum exhibit also features an array of mementos, photos and artifacts of local folks who were in some way impacted by the First World War as well. As a person studies what is on display and reads the accompanying material, it becomes clearer about how the hardships of that time reached Red Deer.

As Miller pointed out, it’s a tremendous means of learning more about how Red Deer was affected by a war being fought in what would have seemed a world away.

Red Deer who have experience of going to the First World War.” As for In Flanders Fields, according to the web site Historica Canada, McCrae had enlisted in the First Canadian Contingent soon after the beginning of World War I in 1914.

McCrae was inspired to write the legendary poem on May 3rd, 1915, after presiding over the funeral of friend and fellow soldier Alexis Helmer, who died in the Second Battle of Ypres. He was posted as a medical officer to one of the artillery batteries fighting at Ypres in April 1915. He published other poems before the war in McGill University’s University Magazine. In Flanders Fields is one of a collection of poems published after his death in 1919 as In Flanders Fields and Other Poems.

Meanwhile, the galleries at the Museum are open Remembrance Day from noon to 4:30 p.m.

Long awaited cultural centre breaks ground

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS After three years of planning and partnerships to bring the Asooahum Crossing project to the City, ground has finally been broken at 4615 Riverside Dr. The facility is a collaboration project between the City of Red Deer, the Red Deer Native Friendship Society (RDNFS), the Alberta Native Friendship Centres Association (ANFCA) and the Alberta government. The project will be rolled out in three phases, with the first portion officially underway.

“The first phase of the project is 16 units (two eight-plexes).

The second phase is an apartment building which will have 22 units in it, and the culture centre will be attached to that as phase three,” said ANFCA Executive Director Tanya Schur.

“Today was an opportunity to celebrate the work we’ve done in the last three years, but also to launch a capital fundraising campaign. This is a $12 million project, and we have $7 million committed so we are looking for the remainder. People can donate online, call us and pledge or take part in our capital fundraising and community events.”

the community members and the culture will be there. That’s the beauty of having a community hall that will be open to everybody in Red Deer, but will be located inside of this cultural space,” Schur said.

Darren Tootoosis, president of the RDNFS, said the project would not have been possi-

ble without partnerships with the City and other community members.

“We’ve formed a joint steering committee with the City to go through all of the issues, expected and unexpected, and as a way to help navigate the processes.

That was very important. We’ve also had guidance from elders in our community to ensure that our vision for what we needed would be maintained in the process,” Tootoosis said.

On the same day, the local movement of the I Am A Kind Man campaign was launched.

The campaign is a way for men in the community - Aboriginal or not - to pledge their allegiance to stand against violence towards Indigenous women and girls.

“I Am A Kind Man is an awareness campaign. It is there to bring to light that (violence against Aboriginal women and girls) is a real issue. It’s a way to engage the men in communities to be better men - to be kind men, and to take accountability for our responsibilities - especially to our women,” Tootoosis said.

OPINION Remembering those who sacrificed for us On Wednesday millions of people around the world will take a few moments to remember those lost in battles or who have fought and lived to tell of their war experiences.

Remembrance Day is becoming more meaningful with the never-ending conflicts around the globe.

With these deaths there is a reminder of how vigilant we must be to guard the gift of peace and stability we enjoy here at home.

When the world is a relatively calm place, Remembrance Day can be a difficult day for the younger set, not to mention many adults, to relate to.

Services may be well attended but the realities of war and loss are hard to connect with in times of relative calm.

Unfortunately, often young people have little to bridge themselves to the wars of the past.

Even young adults and ‘baby boomers’ can be estranged from what it felt like to witness the horrendous realities of war.

The importance of never forgetting the sacrifices of those who have served in the war is that much more greater. The younger generations need to be informed of those men and women who fought for the freedoms we enjoy today.

As for the poppy, a writer first made the connection between the poppy and battlefield deaths during the Napoleonic wars of the early 19th century, remarking that “Fields that were barren before battle exploded with the blood-red flowers after the fighting ended.”

After John McCrae’s poem In Flanders Fields was published in 1915 the poppy became a popular symbol for soldiers who died in battle. This year marks a historic milestone for the beloved poem as it’s been 100 years since it was first written.

According to Wikipedia, McCrae was born Nov. 30, 1872 in McCrae House in Guelph, Ontario to Lieutenant-Colonel David McCrae and Janet Simpson Eckford; he was the grandson of Scottish im-

migrants. Though various legends have developed as to the inspiration for the poem, the most commonly held belief is that McCrae wrote In Flanders Fields on May 3, 1915, the day after presiding over the funeral and burial of his friend Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, who had been killed during the devastating Second Battle of Ypres.

The poem was written as he sat upon the back of a medical field ambulance near an advance dressing post at Essex Farm, just north of Ypres.

The poppy, which was a central feature of the poem, grew in great numbers in the spoiled earth of the battlefields and cemeteries of Flanders.

Three years after McCrae’s poem was written an American, Moina Michael, was working in a New York City YMCA canteen when she started wearing a poppy in memory of the millions who died on the battlefield.

During a 1920 visit to the United States a French woman, Madame Guerin, learned

of the custom.

On her return to France she decided to use handmade poppies to raise money for the destitute children in war-torn areas of the country.

In November, 1921, the first poppies were distributed in Canada.

On Remembrance Day we’re all united in a common cause to consider what has been given for us – both recently and in the years before many of us were even born.

The relevance of the day must never be forgotten.

The point is, it’s just not another day off, too much has been lost and too high a price has been paid for anyone to have careless attitudes about such an important day.

We encourage Red Deerians to attend the services this Wednesday at the Red Deer Arena and Veterans’ Park.

Show your appreciation for the sacrifices these men and women have given for us.

Trade barriers to protect Alberta’s craft brewers “Some animals are more equal than others,” said one of the pigs in George Orwell’s cautionary tale Animal Farm.

Once the animals wrested control of the farm from the humans, the pigs in charge were soon drunk on power and became even more oppressive than previous management. The horrible irony was that the pigs profited from their favoured positions while the other animals were worse off than ever.

This same narrative seems to be playing out in Alberta’s brewing industry.

On Oct. 29th, it was reported that big changes are coming that will affect craft brewing in the province.

Brewers from Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C. will receive favoured treatment – beer originating from outside these prov-

FROM inces will be taxed 20% to 30% more than beer originating from within the three provinces.

This runs counter to the interests of Alberta’s businesses and consumers.

Businesses providing craft beers from elsewhere will have to pass on their increased costs to customers through higher prices.

This could end the market for these products entirely.

Cheaper prices draw consumers.

In the end, the Alberta market for suds from other areas will dry up,

and consumers will have fewer choices on shelves.

If you have a craving for Unibroue’s La Fin du Monde from Quebec, you will pay more. Beaus’ Gilgamesh Old Ale from Ontario will be more expensive. The same for a Mill Street’s Vanilla Porter from Ontario. The list could go on and on.

Alberta’s businesses want to sell you the beer you want, but are you willing to pay 20% to 30% more for your favourite brew when you could settle for local? Effectively, the Alberta government is telling you, “Don’t drink the beer you like, drink this instead.” That’s paternalistic and against the interests of most Albertans.

So who stands to benefit from this protectionist tax? In Orwell’s world, it’s not the rest of us animals, of course, because we’ll

R e c e n t ly, Pa i g e MacPherson from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation broke the story that a group of Alberta craft brewers have been pushing the provincial government for years to increase taxes on their competitors. This group includes Alley Kat, Drummond and Wild Rose breweries, to name a few.

The former Progressive Conservative government did not cave in to the brewers’ requests. Did the PCs know something that the New Democratic regime doesn’t?

The Constitution Act, 1867 prohibits our governments from inhibiting free trade between provinces. Sir John A. Macdonald and George Brown expected Confederation to “throw down the barriers of trade” and create a unified market in Canada. To

accomplish this economic union, section 121 of the Constitution stipulates that products such as beer from, “Any one of the Provinces shall, from and after the Union, be admitted free into each of the other provinces.”

The issue of inter-provincial free trade is near and dear to my heart. The Canadian Constitution Foundation took the New Brunswick government to court in the summer of 2015 to defend Gerard Comeau against that province’s unconstitutional beer laws.

Like many New Brunswickers, Gerard routinely crossed into Quebec to take advantage of Quebec’s lower liquor prices.

One day in 2013, after making his purchases, Gerard was caught in a police sting. The RCMP ap-

prehended him, confiscated his beer and issued a fine for $292.50 because he had exceeded New Brunswick’s “personal exemption” import limit of 12 pints.

This New Brunswick law is an affront to the Constitution and the aspirations of the Fathers of Confederation because it functions as a barrier to free trade between provinces.

So does Alberta’s new protectionist tax scheme.

Alberta is not only acting contrary to the interests of consumers, it may be erecting an unconstitutional barrier to free trade.

The Constitution entitles us to enjoy beer without borders.

MAN CHARGED AFTER HIT AND RUN

The RCMP have charged Jason John Powell, 40, of Red Deer, with a number of criminal offences in relation to the death of Chasity Holman, 41, of Red Deer. It is alleged a Chevrolet Impala driven by Powell struck Holman near the Penhold Multiplex at Penhold in the late afternoon of Nov. 5th.

Holman was later pronounced dead at hospital.

An autopsy was completed on Nov. 6th confirming death was due to trauma sustained in the collision with the car.

Powell has been charged with operating a motor vehicle on Waskasoo Avenue in a manner that was dangerous to the public and thereby causing the death of Holman, operating a motor vehicle while his ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol/drug, operating a motor vehicle knowing that operating that motor vehicle was involved in the death of Holman, did fail without reasonable excuse to comply with a demand for a breath sample made to him by a member of the RCMP and operating a motor vehicle while disqualified from doing so by reason of an order pursuant to Section 259(1) of the Criminal Code. (The RCMP can confirm that Powell was convicted of (Drive over .08) Section 253 (1)(b) of the Criminal Code on June 19th at Red Deer and was issued a driving disqualification).

The RCMP can confirm that Powell and Holman were known to each other but will not be speaking to the nature of that relationship.

TWO FACING DRUG CHARGES On Nov. 4th at 10:30 p.m. while on routine patrol Innisfail RCMP conducted a traffic stop with a southbound Ford Focus on Hwy. 2A in Penhold.

A drug investigation was entered into and the vehicle was searched. Thirty-three grams of cocaine and 164 grams of marijuana were located along with over $1,000 in cash and drug trafficking paraphernalia.

A 28-year-old Edmonton man and a 28-year-old Red Deer woman were arrested.

The total street value of the

drugs seized is over $6,000.

RCMP RESPOND TO HOME INVASION At 4:45 a.m. on Nov. 3rd, Sylvan Lake RCMP were called to a home invasion in the area of 48th Ave. and 50th St. Upon arrival RCMP located one male who had been shot. The 25-year-old victim was taken to hospital with, what is believed to be, gun shot wounds. He is expected to recover.

RCMP have arrested Jason Dale Krysta, 25, of Lloydminster. He has been charged with aggravated assault, break, enter and committing an aggravated assault, wearing a disguise, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, careless use of a firearm, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, and two counts of pointing a firearm.

RCMP do not believe this is a random attack.

ARMED ROBBERY IN INNISFAIL Innisfail RCMP responded to the Fox and Hound VLT Lounge to a report of an armed robbery on Nov. 2nd.

It was reported at a masked male entered the Innisfail business, produced a firearm and pointed it at a lone female employee. He was given an undisclosed amount of cash and immediately fled on foot.

It is unknown if there was a vehicle involved.

He is described as male Caucasian, 6’ tall with a medium to large build, and was wearing a grey jacket and scarf covering the lower half of his face. He is believed to be 30- 35-years-old. There were no injuries or damage to property resulting.

MAN CHARGED AFTER PURSUIT WITH POLICE On Oct. 30th at 9:20 am, an officer with the Sylvan Lake Municipal Enforcement Ser-

by Erin Fawcett vices attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a speeding vehicle along 47th Ave. in Sylvan Lake. The vehicle failed to stop for the member and the Sylvan Lake RCMP were advised of the event.

A short time later, this same vehicle was located by patrolling members of the Sylvan Lake RCMP near the Fox Run School. As members attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, the driver drove into the field behind the school and attempted to get away. In order escape, the driver of the vehicle rammed a stationary police vehicle causing damage to the car.

A pursuit was engaged and travelled through Sylvan Lake where the vehicle entered another field at the C.P. Blakely Elementary School and then crashed through a fence to avoid apprehension.

The pursuit was re-engaged a short distance away near the Boston Pizza where the vehicle travelled to a wooded area behind Bayshore Link and got stuck.

The driver and lone male was apprehended at that time with no further incident.

Subsequent investigation determined that the truck had been stolen three weeks earlier from a residence in Benalto.

Dakota Cornelssen, 18, of no fixed address, has been charged with assault with a weapon, possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000, flight from police, dangerous driving, impaired driving by a drug, possession of weapon dangerous to public, mischief over $5,000, mischief under $5,000 and possession of Methamphetamine.

STABBING IN CITY HALL PARK Red Deer RCMP are looking for witnesses to a stabbing in City Hall Park shortly before 1 p.m. Oct. 30th.

RCMP were called to City Hall Park after a woman was stabbed during an altercation with another woman. The victim, a 21-year-old woman, was taken to hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. RCMP and Police Dog Services remained in City Hall Park for an hour while they investigated the incident.

Police continue to investigate and are looking for public assistance to identify the

suspect, who is described as a Caucasian woman in her 20s wearing a black hoodie with white writing on it.

PAIR WANTED AFTER STABBING RCMP have issued warrants for a man and woman after a stabbing at an Oriole Park home earlier this month.

RCMP and EMS were called to the residence on Ottawa Street at 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 28th in response to a report that a man had been stabbed.

The victim was taken to hospital and treated for serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The suspects were known to the victim, and fled the scene before RCMP arrived.

Zared Trey Saddleback, 20, and Tara Lynn Lightning, 24, both of Red Deer, are wanted on a number of Alberta-wide

warrants. RCMP believe they may be travelling to Wetaskiwin or the Edmonton area.

SUSPECT RCMP continue to look for public assistance to identify a man who tried to convince an eight-year-old girl to enter

his truck on Oct. 6th in the Anders neighbourhood, and have had a composite sketch completed.

The girl had just gotten off a school bus on Addington Drive at 4 p.m. and begun to walk eastbound when a man in a brown truck driving westbound stopped and attempted to convince her to enter the truck, reversing the truck to get closer to her.

When she refused and ran to her home, the suspect drove away, continuing westbound on Addington Drive.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, about 1820-years-old, blonde, blue eyes, with a black tattoo beside his eye.

At the time wearing a white shirt over another white shirt and was driving a light brown two-door truck.

Annual Agri-Trade begins in Red Deer ARE YOU

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS The 32nd annual Agri-Trade Equipment Expo has begun in Red Deer. Agri-Trade runs through Saturday at Westerner Park.

The expo, which is sold out and has a waiting list of over 80 exhibitors, allows vendors to showcase the newest equipment, technology and services in the agriculture industry.

“We have exhibitors and attendees from around the globe who meet here in Central Alberta over these four days. From the innovations that are unveiled to the valuable conversations that happen at the booths, we see some amazing connections happen,” said Dianne Smirl, show manager. “The exhibitors really know that this is their launch pad for the next growing season. They bring in their latest and greatest. This is the chance for farmers to get in the cab, play with all the buttons and see how it all works.”

Last year, about 23,000 people walked through the doors at Agri-Trade and Smirl said she is expecting those numbers to stay the same.

“It has been a rough year for agriculture in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and in Alberta.

Some people did very well and other people didn’t do so well,” she said, adding that she

does not think the downturn in the economy will affect attendance numbers. “We have a pretty loyal base, so even though we’ve had a rough year, farmers are really resilient. One year you can be the king of the hill and the next year you can be wiped out by a hail storm.

“The show is really a networking opportunity for them. They can sit down with their neighbour and ask about each other’s seasons and what they did differently and what they are planning for next year.”

Smirl added she encourages Central Albertans to come and check out the expo.

“For people in agriculture this is the launch pad for the next year, but I also encourage other people to come too - agriculture touches everyone - not just those who are producing but anybody who eats food - you’ve been touched by agriculture.

If you really want to get the real facts on agriculture and you want to learn a little bit more, I encourage you to come and talk to the producers and learn how they are growing your food. It is a great opportunity for people to get in and see that.”

Early Onset Dementia Alberta hosts conference in City

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Careful planning for the future in terms of providing care for those with dementia is critical with an aging population, speakers noted at a recent conference in Red Deer.

Early Onset Dementia Alberta (EODA) in partnership with the Alzheimer Society recently hosted the third annual Building Dementia Awareness Conference.

According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, dementia beginning before the age of 65 is known as early onset dementia Many people assume that Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias only affect older people. However, about one person in every 1,000 under the age of 65 develops dementia.

Many can be in their 40s or 50s, and there are a number

of challenges they may face such as having dependent children/parents living at home, having significant financial commitments (mortgage, children university fees, etc.) and finding it difficult to get information, support and services adapted to younger people with dementia.

Meanwhile, according to the Society, in 2011, 747,000 Canadians were living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias - that’s 14.9% of Canadians 65 and older. By 2031, if nothing changes in Canada, this figure will increase to 1.4 million.

As of 2015, 47.5 million people worldwide are living with dementia, or more than the total population of Canada.

The global number will increase to an estimated 75.6 million in 2030, and will almost triple by 2050 to 135.5 million.

Meanwhile, highlights of the recent seminar in Red

Deer included exploring awareness and education for those with early onset dementia by reviewing home care differences across the province; the lack of services and programming for early onset patients and their caregivers; long-term care for dementia patients who are still physically active; diagnosis and medical supports and awareness and education for dementia.

Among the speakers was Dr. Duncan Robertson - a specialist in internal and geriatric medicine from Victoria - who addressed the gathering in the Margaret Parsons Theatre in RDC. Robertson discussed what may be done to prevent or delay cognitive impairment and the challenges of recognizing and diagnosing dementia, among other topics.

He also discussed 10 things people need to know about dementia, including that very few who come to a hospital or clinic complaining of a poor memory actually have dementia.

“Some have age associated memory changes, depression, drug or alcohol-related memory changes or mild cognitive impairment. When brought unwillingly by a family member, the probability of underlying dementia is higher,” he said.

Also, he pointed out that most Alzheimer Disease cases are sporadic. Between 5% to 10% of AD is familial. Having a close family member with dementia does increase risk, however. Dementia prevalence also increases with age, doubling every five years after the age of 65. And currently, there is no drug to prevent or reverse dementia.

And speaking of drugs, it’s important to be mindful of medications that may be contributing to overall cognitive impairment as a side effect.

“Part of dementia involves a chemical system within the brain which can be affected by a lot of drugs,” he said.

Meanwhile, other risk factors for dementia include age, vascular risk factors and head injury. A healthy diet, social engagement and physical activity may, on the other hand, be somewhat preventive, as can intellectually stimulating activity.å As for the issue of why it’s sometimes hard to get a diagnosis, Robertson presented stats that show in Canada that 50% of people wait one year before seeking help.

Twenty-five per cent of people refused to see a doctor about it in the first place and 53% just chalked up the symptoms to ‘old age’.

Meanwhile, local organizer Larry Quintilio wants to reach out to those who are dealing with an early onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Get the tools you need to help improve transportation for seniors in your community. Researchers at the University of Alberta have developed a toolkit that can be used by communities to implement alternate transportation services for seniors in the community. They are offering a workshop in Red Deer on Nov. 20th. Individuals, local government representatives, voluntary organizations, and seniors organizations from Red Deer and surrounding communities interested in championing such an initiative are invited to attend this free, half-day workshop. The goal is to provide attendees with the information they would need to start or expand an alternate transportation service for seniors in their communities. Space is limited to 30 individuals. CONSTRUCTION ON ROUNDABOUT With several projects happening in the area, including the 67th Street/30th Avenue Expansion project, northeast Red Deer saw a lot of construction activity this year.

The 67th Street/30th Avenue Expansion project is a two-year capital project that includes installation of underground utilities,

Construction on this project began in the spring and crews completed extended underground infrastructure and utilities north along RR 272 (30th Ave.) and east along Township Road 384 (67th St.) They have also constructed 30th Ave. north of 67th St. as a paved two-lane roadway, constructed and paved the two-lane roundabout, extended 67th St. west of the roundabout and extended 30th Ave. south of the roundabout and built a temporary connection from the 67th St./30th Ave. bend to the roundabout for use this winter.

The new roundabout has partially opened for local and commuter traffic to move north and south on RR 272 (30th Ave. extension).

Motorists are reminded that the area is still an active construction site and some work is still underway, such as installing street lighting.

The existing 67 Street/30 Avenue bend will remain open and only drivers traveling north and

south on Range Road 272 will be required to use the roundabout.

Work will resume next spring and it is anticipated that the full roundabout will open to traffic in summer 2016.

White dimensional lumber is defined as solid wood that is unpainted, unstained, untreated and free of glue. This includes untreated lumber used for general construction and home building. White dimensional lumber can be repurposed for landscaping mulch, composting or alternative industrial fuel.

A look at the impact of the First World War on community On Aug. 4th, 1914, Red Deer received word that Great Britain had declared war on Germany and its allies. As a member of the British Empire, Canada was automatically part of this declaration of war.

DAWE The news was greeted with great enthusiasm in the community.

Young men flocked to the Armouries to enlist.

Many felt that if they did not join up as soon as possible, they might miss the ‘big show’ before it was over by Christmas.

The 35 Central Alberta Horse, the local militia unit, left Red Deer on Aug. 21st, 1914 to join the First Canadian Contingent.

That fall, Red Deer was designated as a main recruiting station.

Large numbers of volunteers continued to head to

the Armouries to enlist.

Some went then off to Calgary and Edmonton to join such units as the 31 and 49 Battalions.

In December, the military authorities announced that a squadron of the 12 Canadian Mounted Rifles would be raised and trained in Red Deer.

The Armouries were far too small to handle a full squadron of men.

Red Deer’s City council consequently offered the use of the fairgrounds as training quarters. Since the onset of cold weather prevented the immediate conversion of the exhibition buildings to training facilities, temporary billets continued to be provided at the Armouries.

In order to feed the men, contracts were signed with the local Commercial and Olympic restaurants. The partners at the Commercial Café, George Moon and Charlie Chuck (later the founders of the famous Club Café) thought they had hit a lucky spot with their offer to supply the meals at 21¢ each.

However, they did not realize the how much food would be devoured by the

men. Consequently, the ‘golden’ deal almost bankrupted the business.

By early spring, the fairgrounds were finally ready for the soldiers. The livestock barns had been converted into barracks and the horticultural building had been converted into a dining hall.

Because of concerns about sanitation, the medical health officer had all the men inoculated for typhoid fever.

Meanwhile, the Canadians of the First Contingent saw their first major action at the Battle of St. Julien (Second Battle of Ypres) in late April, 1915.

The Germans released several tons of lethal chlorine gas as part of their assault.

Incredibly, the Canadians managed to hold the line and close the gap in the Allied defenses.

However, the casualty rate from the gas, and the intense combat that followed, was horrific.

Consequently, the need to speed up recruitment and training of fresh troops intensified. On May 23rd, 1915, the men of the 12 C.M.R. left Red Deer for service overseas. In con-

As an example of the enormity of the losses, William Richards, initially with the 12 C.M.R., was the only surviving non-commissioned officer in his platoon when fighting finally ceased at the Somme. Tragically, Will Richards lost his life the following spring at the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

With the adoption of the proposed Gravel Extraction Overlay District, future applications for Aggregate Removal and/or Aggregate Processing will be initiated with an application for the subject lands to be included within the Gravel Extraction Overlay District. This would be considered as an amendment to the Land Use Bylaw that requires a formal public hearing and provides the opportunity for public input to Council.

If this respective application is approved and the lands become a part of the Gravel Extraction Overlay District, then Aggregate Removal and Aggregate Processing would be considered Permitted Uses on that respective property, subject to the conditions as noted within the District.

The purpose of this bylaw is to facilitate the subdivision of 0.53 hectares (1.31 acres) from the adjacent property (Lot 2) to be consolidated with Lot 1, creating a 1.41-hectare (3.48-acre) parcel.

Several women in Red Deer are seeking to gather gently used formal wear, semi-formal attire and accessories to give to women and girls who do not have the opportunity to purchase these items.

Melissa Morin, Katherine Meadows and Cheryl Kowalsky have come together to create the Once Upon A Princess Project, to collect and distribute these items to those who cannot afford to buy them.

The ladies are hosting a collection and awareness event on Nov. 21st-22nd at Parkland Mall.

“I was going through my closet and realized I had lots of dresses that I hadn’t worn more than once and they are fancy, expensive dresses. I thought I should donate or get rid of them but to someone that could really use it - that’s where it all clicked. Cheryl, Katherine and I got together the next day and came up with Once Upon a Princess,” explained Morin.

Morin said the women were trying to come up with an original, non-cash focused project that would allow them to give a little to their community. They are seeking to collect dresses, formal and semi-formal attire, shoes, accessories and beauty salon gift cards to distribute to women and girls in the community.

“We feel that no matter the financial situation or things a person is going through in their life, women shouldn’t have to forfeit feeling beautiful. We want people to have something nice to wear to their kids’ Christmas play, or friend’s wedding or for teenage girls to wear to their winter formal dances. Of course, we want them to also have that all year-round,” Morin said.

“Some people might have money to cover the basics like food, shelter and transportation but they don’t have the extra money for things like this.”

The ladies will be stationed near the Wal-Mart entrance of Parkland Mall to collect items and raise awareness of the project.

“We want to encourage women to donate a dress they never wear, or some jewellery and accessories. That way, we can get some awareness out about the project and people can help us a make a difference,” Morin said.

The donations aren’t limited to women - men can get involved by purchasing gift cards to hair salons, nail salons or beauty services that would be distributed through Once Upon A Princess. Morin, Kowalsky and Meadows have said the project is strictly no cash.

ENTERTAINMENT Andrea Superstein brings indie-pop extravaganza to town

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS The sophomore album from Vancouverbased indie artist Andrea Superstein has been described as a ‘quirky, arty, pop-jazz tour-de-force’. She performs on Nov. 12th at Fratters Speakeasy.

Her gorgeous voice and engaging style shine through that much more on her latest effort What Goes On which draws on her colourful background in musical theatre, her training as a jazz vocalist (check out the sleek, sultry tones of disc opener I Want to Be Evil), and her love of 90s trip hops acts like Portishead and Morcheeba.

Other highlights on the disc include the moody elegance of Just One Time (featuring a chorus sung by the Juno-winning Good Lovelies) and the terrifically-crafted, old-time sensibilities of the shimmering classic After You’ve Gone.

Superstein – known to her contemporaries as ‘Super’ – is influenced by the music scenes of both the east and west coasts.

Surprisingly, she didn’t grow up in a musical household.

“I grew up in a house where we listened to talk radio,” she explained during a recent chat from her home in Vancouver.

“But I discovered my voice from very early on - like in elementary school.

“My first band was probably in Grade 2 or Grade 3,” she laughs. “My friend and I wrote some little songs - we were called the Black Knights.”

She always enjoyed singing in school productions over the years, and choirs.

Later on, she became increasingly involved in musical theatre. “I spent a lot of time doing that, and eventually did a theatre degree at McGill University.

“So I’ve always been interested in the arts, and I worked also as a singer/songwriter when I was in university. So it was just me and my guitar - I’d perform original tunes in bars and coffee houses, that kind of thing.”

She would leave music and the arts for a time, however, venturing to overseas humanitarian and international development projects such as teaching music at a school in Ghana, for example. “I was always drawn to this notion of wanting to contribute,” she explained. “I had done a lot of travelling, and that kind of opened my eyes to things.”

But after a while, she knew in her heart it was time to explore her creative side once again.

“After a couple of years away from creativity, I was really missing it.”

So she moved to Vancouver to work on a graduate degree in drama education.

“From there, I started getting involved in the musical scene in Vancouver as well,” she said, adding that she also attended jazz camp for grown-ups and something was sparked inside.

“There was maybe 100 or so students there, and all of the great Vancouver jazz musicians were there teaching. So my first introduction to the jazz scene was with all of these amazing talented people all in one confined space! I got to know a lot of them closely much faster than I would have by just being in the city. I also fell in love with the music and with the community,” she said.

She debuted at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival in 2010 and released a debut CD of jazz standards that

same year.

“I had applied to the jazz festival thinking there was no chance they would give me a gig, and they did,” she recalled. “It really gave me the encouragement to keep working and moving forward. I feel like over the past five years, that I’ve really explored music, jazz standards, and that I’ve really tried to find a way to carve out my own voice in the sense of what my music sounds like, or what distinguishes it from other jazz vocalists. That’s been a really, really cool process.”

Now, with the release of What Goes On, Superstein’s arty, indie eclectic style is captured on record in all of its colour, joy and diversity.

“I really wanted something that sort of sat on the fence between a jazz record and an indie record,” she said. “I think that really speaks to who I am. I listen to so many different kinds of music and I’m

influenced by so many different kinds of music, so I felt that that direction was the most honest.

“I still wanted to keep it based it in a jazz philosophy, too.”

She also credits producer Les Cooper with taking things in a fresh direction as well. “He brought the record so much further forward than I could ever have done on my own, and that’s why I really enjoyed working with him.

“So we got together with some other musicians in Toronto and we hashed out all of the arrangements,” she said.

“It was a really cool process, because I had always sort of done it on my own.

But it was really nice to collaborate,” she added. “And lucky for me, I was collaborating with some very amazing musicians who also happened to be wonderful people.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Red Deer Players presents murder mystery Lifeless in Las Vegas Production offers some unexpected plot twists during its run The Red Deer Players are gearing up to present an intriguing murder mystery as their first theatrical outing of the season.

Lifeless in Las Vegas opens on the Scott Block’s Centennial Stage on Nov. 19th at 8 p.m.

Additional shows run Nov. 20th-21st at 8 p.m. as well, with another on Nov. 22nd at 2 p.m. These shows will include dessert and refreshments.

There will also be a show at the Springbrook Multiplex on Dec. 5th at 8 p.m.

“We are also doing a large production at the Golden Circle,” said Albert Azzara, the play’s director. Tickets for that show - set for Nov. 27th - are available at the Golden Circle office.

Meanwhile, the action all takes place at Wizards Casino in Las Vegas.

As the Player’s web site puts it, “On Nov. 19th a man will die. Seven people had a motive to see him dead, all could have had the means and opportunity and now must defend themselves. He’ll die many times again before the play finishes its run. The question you need to figure out is Whodunnit?”

Azzara, who is also starring in the show, describes it as a ‘structured improv’ - there are several scenes that have been mapped out, but things are also essentially created by the actors as they go along.

He plays the investigator in the story, so he will be asking the various suspects in the recent murder a bunch of leading questions - which will lead to all kinds of fun, interesting and perhaps even surprising results.

Rounding out the cast are David Weiss, Lionel Lustgarden, Glynn Humphreys, Jennie Beal, Hannah Humphreys, Lorraine Stuart, Hannah Humphreys, Holly Pettitt and Lawrence Hobbs.

The show is being produced by Susan Humphreys.“It’s similar to the home kits that you can get,” he explained of the show. “It’s also a lot like that movie Clue, so it’s over the top, so there will be lots of weird characters.”

Glynn stars at Tony Bonello who manages the Wizards Casino. Weiss plays the part of Dr. Julius Prescott - a successful plastic surgeon at a private clinic in Los Angeles with “an exclusive clientele including politicians and screen celebrities.”

Hannah plays the part of Cookie Daniels - a model and actress who who came to Vegas with her fiance and Beal plays the part of Brigitte Damien who owns a private escort service in Vegas. Finally, Pettitt plays Katie Morgan who is a dealer at Wizards Casino.

Meanwhile, it’s been a hoot to put together, with constant revisions and the process of exploring different ways of how particular scenes play out. “That’s how fluid this has really been,” said Azzara. “Last night we were rehearsing at St. Luke’s church so it felt like Murder in the Cathedral,” he said with a smile.

“We start out half an hour before the opening of the play with cast members in the audience talking with people,” he added. “We’ll be talking with them and then I call them up onto the stage and I start asking them questions like, ‘Could you tell me word for word what happened when you met him in the hallway near the casino?’ Then we might have a flashback.

“And then at the very end, we will line up the suspects and ask the audience, who thinks it’s so and so?

Whoever gets the most applause gets arrested - and then we let them know if they are right or wrong.”

Murderers of course will be switched around from show to show as well to keep everyone on their toes. “It will change every night.” Azzara said there will also be a surprise during the show’s intermission as well.

Tis the season - pumpkin, spice, and everything nice Cooler temperatures mean hockey is in full swing, Sunday night football, falling leaves and the reintroduction of your favourite fall comfort foods. Perhaps you had an easy time sticking with your diet lately, but you know the upcoming holiday parties, Halloween candy still lying around, and everything pumpkin will make it hard to stay on track.

This time of year isn’t without its share of diet pitfalls. Be aware of the dangers, face them head on, and implement simple but effective ways to avoid the weight gain that’s so common this time of year.

You’ve waited for football and hockey season all summer and now it’s finally here. Watching the game at home or meeting with friends to cheer the home team on may be a couple of your favourite fall activities, but beware! When you combine sitting on the couch for hours on end with beer, soda, nachos, wings, pizza, ribs and hotdogs, you’ve got a recipe for weight gain.

Don’t worry. You can still have fun and enjoy the game. You’ll just need to make a few game-time snack adjustments.

Mindless eating is one of the top causes for overeating. One way to avoid this diet pitfall is to save your snacks for half time.

You’ll also need to know that yummy food doesn’t have to be unhealthy. Swap out light beer for regular beer, sugar soda for water or club soda, switch to whole grain chips with salsa or hummus instead nachos, baked chicken for wings, or a bison smokie for hot dogs.

Trick-or-treating, block parties, and costume parties have one thing in common: candy. Made of sugar and high in calories, one piece of candy won’t do much harm.

But how often are you able to eat just one and quit when a bowl full of yummy sweetness is sitting there tempting you all day?

The best way to avoid the pitfall of Halloween candy is to keep it out of sight (in the freezer) or better yet, keep it out of your home. When you’re craving a sweet treat, chew a piece of sugar-free gum, munch on a handful of dried fruit, or enjoy a bite of dark chocolate.

What’s your favourite fall indulgence?

The options are nearly limitless: pumpkin muffins for breakfast, caramel apples at the fall festival, pumpkin-spice lattes on a cool evening, apple pie for dessert and the list goes on. Protein: a few things you may not know Fads in clothing come and go. Women’s skirts go up and then get longer.

Men’s pants get wide and then narrower. Fads also occur in medicine. In the 1980’s it was ‘low fat’ for packaged foods and weight loss diets. Later on the buzz word was ‘low carb’.

JONES Now, walk down the aisle in supermarkets or health food stores and it’d hard to miss the protein content in foods, or protein added to cereals, granola bars or shakes. So today ‘P’ is popping up everywhere.

But what is so special about protein?

In the past it was recommended for athletes who only wanted larger muscles.

Now, it’s also for those who want to lose weight. But a report from the University of California says that protein has fallen victim to Marketing 101. In effect, protein sells because consumers believe it to be ‘healthy’.

So, are North Americans consuming too little or too much protein?

According to University of California researchers, most people are getting more

than enough protein. This amounts to 47 grams for a 130 lb. person and 67 grams for someone weighing 185 lbs.

The exception is people over 65 years of age who may not be getting enough dietary protein. Some of these people have dental problems and find it difficult to chew protein such as meat.

Seniors also tend to lose muscle tissue due to age. And they have to be reminded of a basic physiological fact, that although protein is essential for healthy muscles, it’s not protein that builds strong muscles. Rather, it’s getting out of the chair and incorporating exercise into the daily routine.

Today, many seniors are in chronic care facilities because they’ve developed sarcopenia, weak muscles. The tragedy is that their leg muscles have become so weak they’re unable to get off the toilet.

Or they fall, causing hip fractures which can mean ending life in a wheelchair or death.

So you’re a vegetarian?

Does this mean you may be lacking in protein? It could be, if you’re not eating a varied diet and neglecting dairy products and eggs. But veggie lovers can also get protein from nuts, grains, beans and even vegetables.

For those who want to lose weight, is protein Marketing 101 fact or fiction?

The majority of studies show that add-

ing protein to a calorie restricted diet can promote loss of a modest amount of weight in the short term. And consuming extra protein tends to quell the hunger reflex unlike low protein diets. But high protein diets usually have the same outcome as other diets, the short term effect is positive, the long term a failure.

The failure rate would be less if more fiber was consumed along with extra protein.

Since hypertension remains one of the big cardiovascular killers, extra protein can be helpful. For instance, in 2014 The American Journal of Hypertension analyzed data from the long-standing Framingham Heart Study. It reported that people with the highest protein intake were 40% less likely to develop hypertension.

Readers often ask me if high protein diets can cause kidney disease. According to the University of California, research

has shown that this is not the case if the kidneys are healthy.

But today one in nine adults have chronic kidney disease (CKD). So if you decide to go on a high protein diet be sure to check with your doctor to make certain you do not suffer from CKD. This is particularly important if you are over age 60, have diabetes, heart problems, hypertension, obese and a family history of CKD. Most people get more protein than they think. A 4 oz. chicken breast, and the same amount of tuna, shrimp and a can of sardines all have 30 grams, yogurt 17 grams, a slice of bread three grams, an oz. of cheese seven grams and a cup of ice cream three grams.

Lacombe native pens novel about WWII and life afterwards

BY SARAH MAETCHE RED DEER EXPRESS From the bustling downtown streets of Edmonton, to the big blue skies of rural Alberta followed by the battlefields of Italy and then the quaint streets of Lacombe, A Wake for the Dreamland is a tale that draws you in.

For Lacombe born and raised author Laurel Deedrick-Mayne, the tale is one that she has wanted to tell for many years.

A Wake for the Dreamland is a historical fiction piece that tells the story of three characters’ lives through the years of 1939 to 1979.

The three go through many trials and life experiences including idyllic life in Edmonton before the war, the Second World War overseas and an attempt to rebuild their lives in Lacombe after the war. “It’s a story about people,� described Deedrick-

Mayne, who resides in Edmonton. “It’s a life story.

It’s a very untold Canadian story that can resonate across generations, not only for the people that were there, but for the young people who want to see their grandparents’ lives in a different light.

It also addresses those universal things, like loss, love, truth and friendship. “We often struggle in our lives. Women struggle wanting to be the perfect woman, the perfect wife, the perfect partner, the perfect career person - the struggle that these characters have in their little brief time on the page between 1939 and 1979 are not that different than the struggles you and I have in this day and age. There is that underlying life story.�

rate as possible, especially the chapters involving the war. “I didn’t know a lot about it,� said Deedrick-Mayne. “So it was basically 10 years of researching, writing and re-writing, getting to know veterans, hanging out at the regiment museum, the archives, going to Sicily and Italy, writing and re-writing - I’ve followed in the steps of the Canadians through Sicily and Italy and tried to really capture the truth of it.

The only way to do that is to take time.�

The inspiration behind the novel is three-fold, built off Deedrick-Mayne’s experiences and a need to reflect on the past.

In 2003, Deedrick-Mayne said she was in Safeway on Remembrance Day and at 11 a.m., an announcement came on the speaker, indicating for the shoppers to observe two minutes of silence. “I felt so ashamed, so embarrassed,� she said of the experience. “Here I am standing in the Safeway, white knuckling my little cart, thinking what am I doing here? Is my life so important that I am here and not honouring this?

It was like this little seed was planted.�

Another seed was planted a few months later after she saw the regiment museum was showing an exhibit on the Battle of Ortona for the 60th anniversary. “That caught my attention and the seed started to germinate,� she said.

Next, Deedrick-Mayne was abruptly inspired by

Sarah Maetche/Red Deer Express the three characters when she was driving down the street in Edmonton. “It was literally like being hijacked,� she said. “These three characters that you see on the front cover (of the book) were in the backseat saying ‘Hey, this is who we are. This is our story. This is our life. Write it. Tell it. Do it.’�

Eventually, after trying to resist the idea, she put pen to paper and the book began to flow.

A lot of the novel is based on moments in history, like the royal visit of the King and Queen in 1939 to Edmonton. The setting and landscapes in Edmonton, like the Silk Hat Cafe or the Hotel McDonald, detailed in the novel were familiar in Deedrick-Mayne’s mind. “I also spent hours and hours in the City archives looking through old pho-

tographs, old newspapers so that I had a real sense of what the city was like at that time,� she explained.

In the novel, Lacombe is the setting where the characters go after the war ends. “It was a lovely place to raise a family and it was for these characters, in fiction, a way to truly start over and leave those old sad memories of loss behind,� said DeedrickMayne.

She added the story is also a little bit of a reflection on her parents’ generation, who actually built a life in Lacombe during the time period detailed in the book. “It is important to cut that generation some slack,� said DeedrickMayne. “In some ways, aside from atoning for not being at the park for Remembrance Day with

my kids in tow, I think the book is also an atonement for the attitude that I really held against that older generation. It pays tribute to what they went through as they came of age. “There’s that little payment of tribute and gratitude that goes along with writing a story,� she said. “There’s gotta be a lot more going on.�

A Wake for the Dreamland is Deedrick-Mayne’s first published novel. “Many people have that sort of dream or desire,� she said. “Everyone has a story or two, or 10 in them and this was mine, which is not to say that I don’t have more that I want to write, but this was the first.�

SPORTS Hunting Hills football teams clinch league championships

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS Hunting Hills High School will have to clear some room in the trophy case for a pair of football trophies.

The high school’s Junior and Senior football teams swept to their respective league championship titles thanks to back-toback wins during an allday double header at Great Chief Park last Saturday.

The day kicked off at 11 a.m. with an inter-school grudge match between the Hunting Hills Jr. Lighting and the Lindsay Thurber Jr. Raiders for the Bantam league title.

The rivalry that exists between Lindsay Thurber and Hunting Hills is arguably the biggest in the league, and with the Tier II championship trophy and a berth in provincials on the line, the game promised to be a good one.

Nerves appeared to have set in for Hunting Hills, who were competing for their first Tier II Bantam league title since 2004. Their offense turned the ball over on a fumble on their first drive of the game. The Raiders took advantage of the opportunity and scored a touchdown to take an early 8-0 lead. (In Bantam football, a kicked conversion is worth two points.)

The Jr. Lightning responded quickly, though.

On the ensuing kickoff, Hunting Hills star running back Logan Clarkson received the ball on his own five-yard line. Clarkson then proceeded to run 95-yards and break three tackles on his way to the House to tie the game at eight.

From that point on the Jr. Lightning were dominant

on both sides of the ball.

Their defense was solid, holding Thurber’s offense to just the one touchdown in the first half. They also forced two consecutive turnovers inside Thurber’s 30-yard-line late in the second quarter, which led to a pair of quick TDs for the Lightning.

“We just had a good scheme. We worked all week getting ready for Thurber and our kids bought in,” said Hunting Hills Head Coach Josh Sorensen after the game.

This was Sorensen’s first championship as the coach of the Lightning.

That strong defensive showing, coupled with an offense that took advantage of the chances they were given, allowed the Lightning to take a 24 point lead into the second half. “We played with a lot of heart and we played really great, so I’m proud,” said quarterback Tristen Taylor, who ran for a pair of touchdowns and played a solid passing game to lead his team to the win.

The Lighting continued their strong showing at the start of the second half, adding another touchdown two minutes in. Thurber started showing signs of life, though, as they blocked the conversion kick to hold Hunting to just six points on the play. They would follow up that huge block with a touchdown of their own to draw a little closer.

It wouldn’t be enough, though. Each team added one more touchdown before the final buzzer to make it 46-24 in favour of Hunting Hills, who claimed their first Bantam league championship since 2004 and booked a trip to this year’s provincials.

The game started off with a defensive battle for the ages. The teams held each other at bay throughout most of the first quarter, with plenty of turnovers coming from both sides.

The stalemate lasted right up until the final play of the first quarter, when Hunting Hills quarterback Eric Thompson threw a long-distance bomb down field and connected with receiver Zech Pilgrim who took the ball all the way to the end zone to give his team a seven

field goals to bring the final score to 29-7.

Victory came at a cost, though, as Hunting Hills starting quarterback Thompson went down with a potentially season-ending injury in the fourth quarter, leaving the team without a starter going into their provincial semi-final game next Saturday.

In the end, though, the team managed to hold on and claim their second consecutive Central Alberta High School Football championship.

Sportsmanship becoming absent at all levels of sport Competitive sports are a lot different than they used to be.

It used to be that competitive athletes held a certain amount of respect for one another at all times, even when facing off on the field, rink or court.

The competition was fierce on the playing surface, and trash talking was still a common thing, but there used to be a line that players would not cross in their trash talking. And at the end of the game, they’d leave it all on the field.

These days, though, I have begun to notice a sharp decline in the level of sportsmanship that is shown during these competitions.

As a hockey referee, I tend to notice when a player goes out of his or her way to give the opposing goaltender a tap on the pads to acknowledge a good save, or when the captains from one team skate across the ice to shake to an opposing coach’s hand during warm up. These gestures, while

CORMIER small, can set the tone for an entire game.

They can mean the difference between a friendly competition or an all-out grudge match.

But these gestures are becoming much less common at every level of sport.

Instead, I hear more and more players insulting each other on the ice.

Worse, comments that used to sound like meaningless banter designed to get into an opponent’s head have seemingly morphed into serious insults intended to hurt rather than hinder.

Just this past weekend, the NHL received a report of bullying on the ice.

According to Sportsnet. ca, during a regular season matchup between the

New Jersey Devils and the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday night, Alexandre Burrows of the Canucks allegedly made some insulting personal comments towards Jordan Tootoo of the Devils while the two players were in the penalty bench.

Tootoo, the first Inuit player to ever crack an NHL roster, has a history of substance abuse.

He entered the NHL/ NHLPA Substance Abuse and Behavioural Health Program in December of 2010. His brother Terence, who played in the minor leagues, committed suicide in 2002 after he was arrested for drunk driving.

While the details of the conversation between the two players are not yet known, Tootoo told Sportsnet that the remarks were, “Classless and unacceptable in this day and age.”

Burrows was not available to comment on the allegation, but conversations like this one simply should not be happening

at any level of sport.

And the problems don’t end on the ice. With the dawn of social media, some professional players have started calling each other out publicly on platforms like Twitter and facebook with comments and trash talk about what happened during a game, and these comments generally prompt a response from the target of the Tweet. While the comments are typically more verbal sparring than anything else, the potential exists for them to explode into all-out Twitter wars.

Now, I’m not saying that this kind of bullying is the norm at any level of sport, but it does exist and, unfortunately, it is gaining momentum.

Even the post-game handshake in minor hockey, a tradition that is meant to reinforce the idea of good sportsmanship, has been affected.

I’ve seen players in minor hockey speed through the handshake without actually shaking a single hand after a game because of a perceived slight committed by the opposing team.

I’ve seen coaches in nov-

ice hockey deliberately avoid shaking the had of a 13-year-old referee because they missed a call or made a call that the coach didn’t agree with.

Rivalry in sport is a good thing. A good, healthy rivalry can bring out the very best in both teams.

But a careful balance must be struck to ensure that those good, healthy rivalries don’t escalate into full-blown animosity, and it’s up to the players, coaches, parents and officials to ensure that balance is kept. zcormier@reddeerexpress.com

When I consider moving across the ocean to re-create my life in a completely foreign culture, it causes me to breathe funny and I put the thought out of my mind immediately. I am a fan of my creature comforts and honestly not very brave when it comes to facing new living challenges. My daughter’s best friend just said goodbye to her fiancé for a few months as he has joined the U.S. Marines.

This brave young couple has put their wedding on hold to give him the freedom to pursue his dreams while possibly defending our freedom in the future.

Without knowing where his future home may be, this young man is setting off to places unknown with an unselfish desire to serve and protect with no guarantees

about where he may live and when he will see his fiancé.

Not so many generations removed from us are people who have given up their comforts of home to travel to unknown shores with their only desire being to be of use to their fellow man.

While I may be here in Canada wondering why my command start doesn’t work – many are sleeping in huts and hostels while they sacrifice their comforts of home to contribute to the greater good.

Could you put all of your needs aside to go to a new land and lend aid or fight for the freedom and comfort of others or would you miss Netflix and your heated blanket?

Because I am not inclined to give up the comforts of home, I am deeply grateful and respectful of those who do and who have gone before me to make this world

a better place. My utmost reverence to all of you and I acknowledge today of all days to remember. My life would not be what it is today without your life being profoundly changed and may I never forget what has been sacrificed in the past to help shape a free future.

Take the time today to remember. Give thanks to someone you may see with a poppy on their lapel or a veteran licence plate on their car. Remember our ancestors who built and were pilgrims in an unknown land who gave you the life you now enjoy. Those individuals who give up the comforts of home to give their talent and time to a world that is in need, who put people ahead of their comfort and gave time to those who needed it the most.

Top five reasons people do not qualify for mortgages I receive calls every month from people who want to know how to qualify for a mortgage because they were declined by their bank. In many cases I can help them and in some cases they have to wait – but we identify what they need to do to get in a better situation to qualify.

TURCOTTE Here are the top five reasons why people don’t qualify for a mortgage with their bank and come to see an independent mortgage specialist.

1. Lack of a down payment or equity - with the end of cash-back mortgages offered by the banks, borrowers now have to come up with the down payment on their own. They can receive it as a gift from a family member – but no more cash-back from the lender used for down payments. Minimum down payment is 5% for the purchase of an owner-occupied home or 20% for a rental property. Minimum 20% equity in the home if it is a refinance. This will help you qualify for a mortgage.

2. Insufficient income - with the high price of homes, sometimes people simply don’t earn enough money to manage a mortgage payment, property taxes and strata fees along with existing consumer debt and still have a life. For some home buyers, the only other option is to access more money for a down pay-

ment (gifted) or try to purchase a home with suite income or look at alternative lenders who accept room and board and other sources of income to help you qualify for a mortgage. In some instances, home buyers will look for someone else to go on title to add income to the application.

3. New mortgage rules - for those with less than 20% down payment, the new mortgage rules are adjusted to the debt servicing ratios and amortization for borrowers. The new rules for debt servicing apply to those with good credit scores and allow for a max of 39% (gross debt servicing – GDS) of gross monthly income to cover the mortgage payments, property taxes and 50% of the strata fee.

In addition a max of 44% (total debt servicing – TDS) of gross monthly income is allowed to cover the same and other consumer debts such as loans, credit cards and lines of credit. The maximum amortization was also reduced from 30 years to 25 years – effectively tightening qualification for borrowers equivalent to a 1% interest rate hike.

4. Credit issues - some people don’t realize if they are late on credit card payments, their mortgage or loan payments the lender will update the credit bureau agencies and the late payments will reflect on their credit report, lowering their credit score. Other items can also affect credit scores such as a collection (if you didn’t pay that parking ticket or fitness membership fee they can send to a collection agency) and those marks on your credit report make your score drop like a rock. card limit, and applying for credit often requiring your credit report to be pulled by the bank, auto dealership and credit card companies will lower your score. Finally, consumer proposal and bankruptcy will greatly impact your score, which can stay on your report for up to seven years if real estate was involved as is the case with bankruptcy.

5. Too much debt -there are a growing number of consumers doing – well – too much consuming. Credit card debt is on the rise and over use of lines of credit are putting some people in a debt overload situation. Some pre-home buyers go out and purchase that amazing new truck, along with a large monthly payment, which

pushes their total debt servicing (TDS) ratio over the limit. Nice new truck – no home with a garage. Some home owners have so much consumer debt that they are unable to refinance their home to consolidate the mortgage and the credit card debt because the amount exceeds the maximum loan to value allowable (currently 80% of the value of the home) and if housing prices stabilize or drop in some areas – this makes it more difficult for home owners to qualify for that new mortgage and lower payments.

Paying off your debt will help you qualify for a mortgage.

Get cozy: put that ugly holiday sweater to good use. Layer up to keep warm and lower the thermostat by a degree or two to save energy (and money).

Go DIY with home cleaning: with the windows shut tight, there is no better time to try homemade cleaning supplies. The best part is that many of the basic ingredients needed can often already be found at home, including baking soda, lemon juice and

white vinegar.

Pass on the paper: go digital when it comes to books, movies, music and magazines and send greeting cards and gift cards electronically to reduce waste.

Bring the outside in: add a splash of green and improve the air quality inside your home with houseplants. Interested in tackling a larger project?

Restaurant Manager $19.23 / hour 40.00 hours/week Specific skills: Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate daily operations, Determine type of services to be offered and implement operational procedures, Monitor revenues and modify procedures and prices. Ensure health and safety regulations are followed, negotiate arrangements with suppliers for food and other supplies, negotiate with clients for catering or use of facilities. Develop, implement and analyze budgets, participate in marketing plans and implementation, set staff work schedules and monitor staff performance. Recruit, train and supervise staff, address customers’ complaints or concerns, provide customer service.

Working in a high volume, fast paced environment, the successful candidate will be responsible for ad building, designing and processing ads, as well as the design and layout of special sections and trade papers. They must possess a positive attitude, strong work ethic, keen eye for detail and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Mac-based Adobe InDesign and Adobe Creative Suite are definite assets.
