Plans for a new wetland interpretive centre to replace the current facility in Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area marsh are moving forward, said Regional District of Central Kootenay Area C director Larry Binks. For more than a year, a committee chaired by Binks has been working to shape a new future for one of the Creston Valley’s most valuable resources. Having defined the mission of a new interpretive centre as needing “to promote knowledge and foster appreciation of Columbia Basin history, Ktunaxa culture teachings and wetland ecology,” the committee worked through a consultation process that included area residents and stakeholders, including the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources, Ducks Unlimited Canada, local governments, Columbia Basin Trust, First Nations, Creston Community Forest, Wildsight and Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce. “It was important to me to get full representation from all interest groups and the general public,” Binks said. “I wanted to be sure we all had a voice in the outcome.” SEE CENTRE, PAGE 5

Medeo, an online service, offers patient care alternative BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Not all medical care needs to take place in person. An online medical service can help relieve pressure on the health care system, said Creston Mayor Ron Toyota. Medeo allows patients to consult with a doctor by video link and it is available to all B.C. residents (and in other jurisdictions around the world). The service is covered by the BC Medical Service Plan, which is billed directly for Medeo services. As chair of the Creston Valley Health Working Group, which works to recruit physicians and other medial professionals to the Creston area, Toyota said he registered with Medeo to test how the service works. “I registered and then made an Internet appointment,” he said. “A receptionist contacted me and I did a Facetime consult with the physician, getting a second opinion on my high blood pressure. “This system is great for getting prescriptions refilled, and if lab or blood tests are required, it is then referred to Medeo. A physician is contacted and an appointment is then scheduled.” Medeo, a privately owned company, is not a medical product — it is

a utility that connects doctors and patients. The company does not employ doctors, but any practicing B.C. physician can sign on to see B.C. patients via videoconference. If a Medeo patient’s doctor has signed on to the service, the patient can be matched with him or her. A patient can also send an invitation for his or her physician to sign on to Medeo.

Creating an account is simple. First time users enter their name, Medical Services Plan number and phone number, then create a password. They then enter a virtual waiting room where a Medeo coordinator does an initial screening. A video consultation with a doctor is then arranged, usually within a day of making the request. Access to the videoconference service requires a computer with a camera.

Medeo uses encrypted software to ensure the confidentiality of the doctor-patient interactions. On the Medeo website (medeo.ca) are testimonies posted by Twitter users: “Shout out to @medeo for saving my family from spending half my day in a crowded clinic just to get my regular medications refilled!” “Just downloaded @medeo, signed up and was talking to a doctor, after hours, in minutes. THIS is how health care should be!” “Thanks @medeo! You saved me from a long wait at the drop in clinic with a 2 yr old! Only 20 min wait to connect to a Doc = Brilliant!” Another resource for those who can’t get a doctor’s appointment in a timely manner or who need quick information about a medical issue is HealthLink BC. The website provides medically approved information on more than 5,000 health topics, symptoms, medications and tips for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It also has a director listing services near the searcher’s hometown. A phone call to HealthLink BC (811) allows callers from British Columbia to speak with a nurse at any time of the day and night. Pharmacists are available to answer questions about medication at night.

Police have identified a suspect after the Gray Creek Hall was broken into on Nov. 5. “The front door was damaged by the person who broke in, and interior damage included an oven, woodstove and window,” Creston RCMP Staff Sgt. Darryl Hammond said on Monday. “The perpetrator left blood behind at the scene and we have a suspect in our investigation.” Police Beat In other RCMP news, Creston police responded to a total of 64 calls for service from Nov. 2-8, Hammond said. November 2 •Police assisted in getting a female who suffers from dementia to the hospital for treatment. •A complaint was received from Northwest Boulevard about the driving habits of a 100-year-old female. •A person complained about a forgery made during a car purchase from Kelowna. •Police attendance was needed to keep the peace in the 400 block of 16th Avenue South and in Kitchener. Both cases involved landlord-tenant disputes. •A traffic complaint came fromBCFGA a driver who had been tailgated and passed on REPLANT Highway 3 near Kitchener. A beverage can15 was thrown at the NOV complainant’s vehicle during the incident. •Minor injuries resulted when a pedestrian was struck in the crosswalk in the 1500 block of Canyon Street. •A male who fled a Northwest Boulevard residence after consuming drugs was located and held in cells for his safety until the following morning. •An intoxicated male made threats at a Centre Avenue residence. •A requested well-being

check on Vancouver Street determined the resident to be OK. November 3 •Insults and finger displays were reported during a disturbance in the 800 block of Canyon Street. •A person was warned after an Erickson Road resident complained about receiving a large number of harassing text messages. •Police were called to an Erickson Road home where a dispute was taking place over the division of property. •A squatter was reported in an uninhabited building in the 400 block of 22nd Avenue South. •During a road check of vehicles on Northwest Boulevard, a driver was ticketed for having open liquor. •A resident in the 700 block of Canyon Street was found to be OK when police conducted a well-being check on behalf of a friend. •A person reported to be breaching a court order on Highway 21 was not located. November 4 •When police conducted a requested well-being check, they learned that the person in question had been in a vehicle accident that took place on Riverview Road. The driver had stopped to give the person a ride and that person then made threatening movements that caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Another occupant received a broken collarbone when the vehicle rolled over. •A two-vehicle crash on Highway 3 at 40th Avenue occurred when a driver braked to avoid hitting wild turkeys. The car following rear-ended the vehicle that stopped suddenly. •A labour issue that led to threats by an employee was reported at Gray Creek. •An intoxicated female who needed medical treatment was taken from Crawford Bay to hospital.

November 5 •A Yahk resident reported the theft of a snowmobile but was unable to provide an accurate description. •A vehicle sold to an American was found abandoned on Highway 21 near Porthill Road. •Police have referred a complaint about a male kicking a dog on Murdoch Street to the SPCA. •An erratic driver near Yahk was videotaped driving erratically. He was warned because the complainant refused to attend a court hearing. •A disoriented person in the 1500 block of Scott Street was taken to hospital for medical treatment. •A Northwest Boulevard resident reported a possible assault but police found the noise was just from loud music. November 6 •A 94-year-old male died of apparent natural causes in the 300 block of Sixth Avenue South. •A minor collision occurred in a Canyon Street parking lot. •A fire on Settlement Road was set according to a permit, police determined. •Youths knocking on doors on Elm Street and running away have been harassing residents for a month, police were told. November 7 •An ATV was reported stolen in Wynndel. November 8 •When police attended a Bodor Road residence to quell a family dispute an intoxicated male was arrested and held in police cells until sober. •A neighbours’ dispute over fencing and water damage required police attention in the 4300 block of 36th Street. •No injuries were reported after a minor collision in the 4300 block of Highway 3 •A dog was reported to be chasing a male on Mallory Road.

A new discovery centre would offer year-round education and programming to connect people to the landscape, and provide additional amenities such as research facilities, an amphitheatre and much more. “With the incorporation of our society now completed, we can develop an investor and fundraising package,” Oswald said. “It is exciting to see the project moving forward with the energy and experience of our board.” Founding members of the society also include Jim Posynick, John Huscroft, Chad Luke, Carolyn Mead, Dr. Colin Yerbury, Jen Comer and Art Tremblay. This is the last of 2 series of articles sponsored through TAPS as part of a Moving Along Together Program (for people experiencing memory changes and their caregivers) This was funded by a Columbia Basin Trust Social Grant. We have spent the prior weeks learning a bit about ‘memory‘ and some techniques to work with. We shared ideas from research and practitioners for you to consider: the importance of having a positive attitude to memories, remembering to relax, discovering the role that stress plays and ways to improve attention. We introduced exercises and strategies about using our areas of strength (senses), activating our imaginations, and the role of a sense of humor. We encouraged you to consider playing with these methods to enhance your memory imprint by strengthening it in an area of your brain where it can be more easily recalled. Recall is the topic today, and the skills we have explored in the weeks before are for you to play with and see where the benefit is for yourself. Recall of a memory can quickly turn into frustration when the name or date you are trying to remember just is not there in the moment. Memory Tip: Relax Get in a comfortable position, deep breathe, calm your mind as you notice any distress about not remembering. Memory Tip: State Dependent Memory This type of memory refers to the fact that recall of a memory is easier if you are in the same emotional state that you were in when you were there. So if you are trying to recall a happy memory: smile, giggle, put yourself in a happy state before you activate recall. If you are in the habit of relaxing as you imprint your

memories, then relax when you want to recall it. Hum a tune, move around...what works? Memory Tip: Back Door Another way to recall a memory is “in the back door.” If you can’t remember the name of a restaurant you want to revisit: envision your self walking in the restaurant door, and recall the smell of the food that you ordered, the flavours of what you ate; activate all your senses. Memory Tip: Talk Through the Problem Start with the trace of memory you have, start talking and elaborating about it, keep working listening and talking until you arrive at the memory you want. This can also be quite entertaining as you dig deep into your memories to uncover the one you want. Perhaps writing or drawing as a starting point might work for you. Memory Tip: Alphabetical Associated Recall You are trying to remember a place name: start at A, say it out loud and think if the place started with that letter, keep going through the alphabet. People strong in verbal memory will find this helpful. If this method works, or you like it and it makes sense to you, try focusing on the first letter of the item you want to remember when you are making your memory at first. If you are visually strong, use the same picture image in the recall stage of your memory.. The waiting game

It’s easy to sympathize with the plight of the letter to the editor writer a few weeks ago who spent long hours in emergency at Creston Valley Hospital just to get a prescription renewal. It wasn’t just the wait that upset her — no one seemed willing to keep her informed about how long the wait would be, or why she wasn’t seen more quickly. When Mayor Ron Toyota and I discussed the letter I said the frustration undoubtedly started because she had to attend the emergency room for a non-emergency issue. It meant that she would not be seen according to the order of patients who arrived because emergency patients get first priority, as they should in emergency. And it isn’t always easy for an observer to know exactly who is in need of emergency care. Not every emergency involves blood or obvious symptoms. And I said as well that I could understand why a nurse or staff member might not have made it a priority to check back with the letter writer. No one, I said, likes to go up to someone and tell them that they have no helpful information for them. Facing a patient without having helpful information isn’t likely to be satisfying and is unlikely to get a positive response. I have been in similar situations. A dozen years ago I put my hand into a table saw blade. After emergency surgery, which entailed a flight to Calgary, I made seven more trips to the Foothills Medical Centre as the wonderful Dr. Don MacPhalen performed more surgeries in an effort to restore as much use to my hand as possible.

Most of those procedures were done in the minor surgery unit, where I had the original surgery done. It is a part of the hospital’s emergency service and, as such, I could not be scheduled for a spe-

Lorne Eckersley cific time. Instead, I was instructed to arrive in the morning. I would check in with admissions and then take a seat in the unit’s waiting area. My own surgery would take place when Dr. MacPhalen had a window of opportunity when no emergencies were demanding his time. The experience of waiting for the surgeon was never the same twice. Sometimes a nurse would regularly emerge through the minor surgery door to inform me that the doctor was with an emergency patient and my wait would be extended. On one long day I waited six or more hours with no information at all. I simply had to trust that they had not forgotten that I was there. In all cases I was eventually escorted to a room, where the amazing surgeon (he was actually a pediatric surgeon who specialized in working on kids’ hands) would conduct another procedure. I have never forgotten the day he told me that I was considered to be “a gold standard patient”. The reason? I always did what I was instructed to do pre-

and post-surgery and I never, not once, put my own needs above others. When nurses did come to update me on the waiting situation, often with an apology, I simply replied that they needn’t worry. I was not an emergency and did not expect to have priority over those who were. I had, after all, once been an emergency patient and I remember the relief I felt when I was wheeled into the emergency registration area and a young and fit looking man carrying a cup of takeout coffee walked in from outside. He looked around, then walked over and asked if I was from Creston. Yes, I said. “I’m Dr. MacPhalen and I’ll be looking after you. We’ll get you in as quickly as possible.” Prior to that hand injury, I had never spent a night in a hospital and I had attended our hospital as an emergency patient twice. Once I had a tiny piece of metal in my eye and another time I was suffering from a kidney stone (which passed a short time after I arrived). Never having been without a family doctor, I have never had to attend the emergency in Creston for a minor issue simply because it was my only option. I hope the letter written by Mayor Toyota has helped to explain why it’s OK to attend the hospital emergency room for something like a prescription renewal. And I hope the hospital reminds its staff that customer service is important, even when it is impossible to tell a patient how long a wait is in store. In the time I have worked there, I can’t tell you how many people have stopped and said thank you for what we do for the community. We really appreciate it. However, it’s time to set the record straight. Gleaners doesn’t support your community, you do. Creston is unique in that it has the vehicle to help you do this. Every time you donate something to Gleaners, you are supporting your community. Every time you buy something at Gleaners, even if it’s only worth a quarter, you are supporting your community. Without you, Gleaners wouldn’t be. Without you, all of our wonderful volunteers wouldn’t be able to do the volunteer work they love. To the Editor: Over 100 years ago, humanity witnessed the outbreak of the First World War that claimed 17 million killed, followed by the Second World War that claimed 50 million victims. We are now practically into a third world war, a war against nature, and all will be losers if we destroy what the Creator has so generously provided for us. One would think that humanity would have learned from these catastrophic events and that the 21st century would be a century of peace. But regretfully that is not so. The Iraq war that was started in 2003 by George W. Bush was a disaster that cost many lives and did not create peace in this region. We have conflicts in many parts of the world and politicians are still trying to solve them with force. Canada is at war and people are getting killed with Canadian bombs. We Canadians allow our industries to produce all kinds of weapons and other war materials, the tools of war and help to fuel armed conflicts all over the world. No, we are by no means a peaceloving nation. Destruction and suffering are the result and millions of people lose their homes and their country, and hope to find another part in the world to live in. For those of us who experienced war as teenagers and had bombs dropped on us, were shot at and saw

blood and death around us, it is impossible to think of any war being a Great War. Fathers, relatives and even some of our older schoolmates are buried somewhere in the world. So remembering war for me is remembering death, blood, tears and suffering. Henry Dahle Creston

Walk-in clinic could ease pressure To the Editor: (Re: “Clinic not a solution to ER waits”, Nov. 5) After reading the letter from Mayor Ron Toyota I am compelled to write myself. My wife and I have been in Creston going on three years and find it impossible to even get on a waiting list for a family doctor. I am not alone. I believe there are more than 2,000 people in Creston and area without a family doctor. I know of folks who have had to get doctors in Trail and Nelson because no one is available here. I have spent two and three hours to get a prescription filled, and because I have a history of high cholesterol, I asked if I could have it checked. I was told that I looked healthy and they did not believe it was necessary to be tested but if I had a family doctor they could do it. Thanks, Doc. I do not know if Mr. Toyota has had to wait three hours for a prescription but I do not think the masses that have no doctors want to wait three hours in the emergency area during flu season just for a refill. I believe a walk-in clinic or something similar should be considered as it could ease the pressure on the hospital where the doctors could have the time to be doctors. Don Mantie Creston

All beings are precious

The whole point of Zen practice is to teach us that we are not separate from anything. Thirteenth-century Zen master Eihei Dogen expressed this in his “Mountains and Rivers Sutra”. He said, “If you doubt mountains walking, you don’t know your own walking. It’s not that you are not walking; it’s just that you don’t know or understand your own walking. If you want to know your own walking, you should fully know the green mountains walking.” Until you appreciate and fully embrace the mystery of mountains walking, you haven’t really seen your own life, and you don’t appreciate the enormous measure of who and what you are. Often as we get older, we do appreciate this amazing opportunity of human life. I’ve heard many seniors lament the stupid things they did, the time they wasted. But of course, at the time, they had no idea what they were doing, and in some way, what happened in their lives is exactly what had to happen. Dogen is saying that we don’t know our own life until we know constancy, impermanence and letting go of self-centeredness. The big pattern, which includes constant walking and complete rest, characterizes all existence, and until we have contemplated our own constant walking

and complete rest through spiritual practice, we won’t fully appreciate our own life. Dogen goes on to say, “Green mountains are neither sentient nor insentient; and you are neither sentient nor insen-

A Zen'sEye View Kuya Minague tient.” This statement is kind of surprising because we think that we are sentient and mountains are not. Dogen’s words may express the essential difference between western and Islamic religions and Far East Asian Buddhism. In western thought, there is a hierarchy of beings. The highest beings are invisible and of the visible beings, humans are highest. Creatures that we think have less capacity are lower beings, and objects without life are lower still. You can’t kill people; but you can kill animals. And it doesn’t matter if you trash stuff that isn’t alive, because it is a lower order of being.

Throughout history, we have imposed this hierarchy on humans, as well. During colonization, Africans and North American Indians could be bought and sold or killed. The Nazis considered Jews to be a disposable race, and today, in the radicalized Middle East, infidels are so low on the hierarchy that it’s a spiritual act to kill them. The examples are endless. At the same time, there are human beings who are so precious that if you insult them you must be killed, or if you deny them as the highest beings, you burn in a lake of fire for eternity. For Dogen, all beings are equally important. He often says that even roof tiles, walls and pebbles are sentient beings and they all express the teaching of compassion. Suggested practice: Try treating every person, animal and object in your world as though they are equally precious and see how this affects the way you feel about your life. How they got it down, I’m not sure, but trains, perhaps eight per day, were permitted safe passage over the bridge. As far as I know, it was raised only the one time, allowing passage of the first and only boat to make use of the lift section. Obituaries Marion Bell

1911 ~ October 12, 2015 In her very long and full life, Marion experienced both world wars, prohibition, the Great Depression, early automobiles and aircraft and the newness of visitors from distant parts of the world. Marion was born in Pincher Creek in 1911, the youngest of ﬁve daughters. Marion spoke of her memories of prairie ﬁres, of the native families who still travelled through their traditional territory on horseback, of the relentless wind. Her family moved to Creston in 1921, to the property at the north end of 16th Ave. where she lived for the next seven decades. Marion’s father passed away in the 1930’s leaving behind a family of capable, resourceful women who maintained enviable standards throughout the depression and the war years. Marion worked as a telephone operator in Creston while her three surviving elder sisters found work in Calgary. Edith, the eldest sister died of scarlet fever, leaving three young children who were raised by Marion and her mother with the support of Marion’s sisters in Calgary. At the end of the war Marion gave up her job as a telephone operator. She married Syd Bell and they lived in Marion’s family home. Syd owned and managed several orchards with his brother Osborne and later bought an acreage on Indian Road and raised cattle. Marion was a capable partner. She had a very keen mind and supported the family business in every way. In 1946 Shirley was born to Marion and Syd, loving parents who believed in the

merits of patience, tolerance and respect for all men. Marion was a devoted mother, invariably courteous and kind, always true to her beliefs. Marion, Syd and Shirley enjoyed summer visits from their extended family, particularly from those who had found shelter and love at the old home when they needed assistance. No one was ever turned away. Marion was fortunate to keep her sharp mind to her last days. She found great pleasure in the company of her friends. Marion loved bridge and played well past her 100th birthday. To Marion, no one was more important than Derek and Ross, her grandsons. She celebrated their every success and supported all of their ventures. In 1988, Marion lost Syd and found the old house too difﬁcult to manage on her own. She moved into Hillside Apartments for the best part of the next two decades. Her apartment had a wonderful patio garden which she tended with great enjoyment. In her late 90s Marion moved to Crest View Village, ﬁrst in independent living and then to extended care, for the last years of her life. Marion enjoyed her years in Crest View. She was grateful for the kindness and attentiveness of the staff, and for the company and support of her friends in Creston.

As I was thinking about the bridge span that wouldn’t immediately come down, I imagined some hapless handcar or speedy car operator unwittingly sailing into the river from the open span. It would be quite a little plunk. As far as I know, that never happened, as it was widespread knowledge — and without email — that the bridge was stuck in the up position and that it was

not a profitable venture to try and jump the gap. (In other aspects of real life, some people try to do that!) One speedy car did have an unfortunate ending, but of a different sort and place. Now, I am not sure how long it takes to put a speedy car together — a while I expect. But one can be “disassembled” in a second or less and here’s how it happened.

John Albert Laidlaw April 15, 1933 ~ November 2, 2015

John Albert Laidlaw passed away at the age of 82 years, on November 2, 2015 at his home in Creston, BC after a lengthy illness. John was born and educated in Smithers B.C. He and Marie were married at the United Church in Smithers B.C. on March 1, 1954, and were married for 61 years. They raised four children; John (Diane), George (Vernel), RaeJean (Ritchie), and Cristal (Evan), who gave them eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. John lived in Smithers for 80 years. Marie and John then moved south to Creston B.C. John enjoyed hockey, ﬁshing, and playing cards with his loved ones. He will always be remembered as a very good grandfather, great dad, and a loving husband.

John Lankhaar was born in Holland on April 12, 1926 and passed away peacefully with family by his side on October 30, 2015 in Castlegar. John is predeceased by both of his parents. He is survived by his eleven children and ﬁfteen grandchildren. A Graveside Service was held by his children Juanita, Johnny, Wesley and Sabrina on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at 10:30 am at Forest Lawn Cemetery on 36 Ave N, Erickson, BC.
