Shuswap Community Foundation President’s Report In 2015, the Community Foundations of Canada focussed on communities with the phrase “Your community makes you, you make your community.” For the directors of Shuswap Community Foundation, this phrase very aptly describes the relationship that exists between the Foundation and the communities of the Shuswap. This statement goes on to say “The causes we care about, the time we invest, the people we bring together – they all shape our communities now and for future generations. Giving back is how the cycle of a vibrant and sustainable community continues.”

Such a concept could conceivably have been the impetus that led to the founding of Shuswap Community Foundation. The year 2015 is significant to SCF because we are celebrating our 20th year of existence. Much has changed since Don Rogers and Tom Brighouse brought back the notion of a community foundation given to them by the Vancouver Community Foundation in 1992 at the UBCM convention. A steering committee was struck to investigate the feasibility of creating a foundation in the Salmon Arm area. Two of the committee members, Gary Brooke and Cindy Derkaz, spent time creating a set of bylaws for the Foundation that has served us well over the years. In January 1995, we officially became a registered charity. Individuals, families, and businesses in the Shuswap realized the importance of this new organization and contributed a total of $70,000, thus becoming the “Founders” of Shuswap Community Foundation.

I wonder if the Founders realized back then just

how successful Shuswap Community Foundation would become.

Today, we have 123 funds in our capital account; 17 new funds this past fiscal year. Our capital account stands at $7,345,186, up from $6,604,455 in 2014, an increase of $740,731.

Our return on investment for our fiscal year was 12.13%. The Foundation’s board voted to continue with a distribution rate of 5% of the capital fund’s market value for this year’s grant cycles.

In our 20 year history, SCF has distributed just under $2,000,000 in grants to registered nonprofit groups in our Shuswap communities.

In June of 2015, the board of directors voted to contribute $51,000 over a 3 year period to Haney House Museum in support of their Montebello Project, which will be Salmon Arm’s signature project to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017.

Prior to our 2015 Annual Community Meeting, we will honour the Founders at a dinner to celebrate our 20th anniversary. It is fitting that we honour those who recognized and supported the concept of Shuswap Community Foundation at its start.

To all of our supporters and donors who continue to recognize the importance of that phrase “Giving back is how the cycle of a vibrant and sustainable community continues,” we salute you as having played a role in ensuring the success of Shuswap Community Foundation.

Foundation matches community donations Your dollars could do double duty this year for the Shuswap Community Foundation.

At the recent annual community meeting, a new foundation initiative was announced which will see the foundation match donations dollar for dollar with community contributions that meet the criteria for the program.

Brian Kassa, chair of the fund development committee for the Community Building - Matching funds program, notes the program will run for one year, ending on Sept. 30, 2016 or until the available funds are exhausted.

The minimum donation for the matching program is $1,000 and the maximum is $5,000.

The program was started after the foundation received a donation of $74,200 from the estate of Albert Spencley. The board agreed to establish a fun in memory of Spencley and his wife Muriel in the amount of $20,000. The remaining $54,200 will be allocated to this new program.

This will allow for matching donations under specific criteria. For details on how the program works, please call the foundation’s office at 250-832-5428 to make an appointment. Those interested can also email finance@shuswapfoundation.ca.

The Community Building Matching Funds Program Why is SCF offering The Community Building Matching Funds Program?

SCF has recently received a donation of $74,200 from the Estate of Albert Spencley. The Board of Directors have unanimously agreed to establish a fund in memory of Albert and his wife, Muriel, in the amount of $20,000. This fund will be designated Board Discretion (no limitation to Board granting authority).

The interest earned will go to non-profit charities within the Shuswap Region. The Executor of the Estate has agreed the remaining funds of $54,200 will be allocated to our new program, The Community Building – Matching Funds Program.

What are Community Building Funds?

Community Building Funds are quickly gaining popularity across Canadian community foundations. Gifts to these funds are unrestricted, which means that donors entrust the Foundation with the allocation of the granting dollars. As a result, Community Building Funds are able to support a full range of charitable work.

What is SCF’s Community Fund?

Recently SCF changed the name of the General Fund to the Community Fund. This change is to focus on the importance of community funds and how they were established to provide for charitable needs in the Shuswap communities within the SCF service area. There are ever increasing requests from the non-profit sector in our communities which strain SCF’s ability

to fund worthwhile projects. The Community Fund provides the most flexibility for us to support these projects.

We are most thankful to all our donors, but the growth in our Funds is now leaning more to the special interests and causes of the donors. The Community Fund along with other named funds in the category, Discretionary - Board Discretion, provides only 10% of the funds available for discretionary use to the Board and Grants Committee. To acknowledge your donations and your trust in the SCF Board’s discretion to respond to the variety of needs reflected in our grant applications we are introducing The Community Building – Matching Funds Program.

The Community Building – Matching Funds Program • The program will run for one year commencing October 1, 2015 and ending September 30, 2016 or until the available funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.

• SCF will match donations 1:1 (dollar for dollar).

• The minimum donation for the Matching Program is $1,000 and the maximum donation is $5,000.

• Donations, to be eligible for the Matching Program, must meet the following conditions: A) Establish a new fund which is designated Discretionary (NO LIMITATIONS to Board Granting Authority)

B) Increase an existing fund to the $10,000 contributed capital requirement for distribution of income to grants AND the Fund must be Discretionary (NO LIMITATIONS to Board Granting Authority). If the fund has any preference or limitations attached to the current Deed of Gift an amendment to the Deed of Gift will be required.

C) In either of the two options above, the Deed of Gift will state the Fund’s income is Discretionary (NO LIMITATIONS to Board Granting Authority) and the designation is irrevocable.

As Vancouver Foundation discovered in their work around belonging, connections are our relationships with others and the strength of those relationships.

Engagement, on the other hand, is our commitment to community and the willingness to take action or participate in activities that make our communities better.

We know that people who feel they belong to a community are more likely to take action with others for the common good. So how can we strengthen belonging to each other and our communities?

An Artistic Force Endlessly encouraging, vibrant, enthusiastic, perpetually in motion, Aileen was enormously talented Active in music and theatre her entire life, her list of accomplishments includes writing 17 poems, three children’s plays, 58 short stories, 18 musical compositions, two radio plays for CBC, and directing five choirs and five plays, including an outdoor production of ‘A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream’.

Aileen Gentles Endowment Fund Aileen Gentles, née Barker, was born in Bristol, England, on May 2, 1936. She obtained an Honours degree in History at the University of London, then won a Canada Council scholarship to attend the University of British Columbia, where she completed her Master’s Degree. After graduation, she joined a BC theatrical touring group, travelling and performing Shakespeare throughout BC for a year. Concurrently she wrote two radio plays for CBC. During this period she met Michael Gentles and in 1962 they married. Two children were born: Cynthia in 1964 and Kate in 1966. Mike, also a British expat, had joined the Canadian Army and the family became nomads for the next 29 years, including three postings in Germany as well as to several areas of Canada. Aileen gave herself wholeheartedly to her new role as an army wife and mother, actively participating in all aspects of being the wife of an army officer while also writing skits and plays for the local community, and schools her daughters attended. A great community booster, she was a wonderful motivator, enabling people to achieve things they

didn’t know they could with her endless encouragement.

Singing in a choir was always a must for both Mike & Aileen; they sang in several in Canada and three different choirs during their postings to Germany.

Aileen also lectured in History at several universities whenever the opportunity arose.

They knew they wanted to build their dream retirement home near water and found the perfect spot in 1991 beside the Eagle River in Sicamous. Aileen became a driving, creative artistic force in the Shuswap.

She was a key member of the Monashee Mountain Arts Society, which fostered the performing arts in the region, and the founder of the Monashee Chamber Choir and the Monashee Chamber Orchestra. She was also instrumental in the creation of the Cambie Farm Theatre.

directing five choirs and five plays, including an outdoor production of ‘A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream’. She also wrote and directed two musicals, an Oratorio, and three farm theatre plays. One of her most spectacular achievements was the creation of a two and half hour musical theatre history of the city of Wainwright, Alberta in honour of Alberta’s 75 Provincial Anniversary. She did it all: fundraising, getting sponsors, gathering together a cast of 300, organizing volunteers, writing, directing – everything.

It was a rousing success and perfectly demonstrates Aileen’s indomitable personality. She died on July 30, 2012.

When it was decided to dissolve the Monashee Mountain Arts Society, president Gord Hynek suggested that the funds remaining in the society be used to establish an endowment fund with Shuswap Community Foundation in honour of Aileen. Upon learning of the proposed fund Karla Krens of the Sicamous Theatrical Group asked if they could be included.

Together with a contribution from Mike, the Aileen Gentles Memorial Endowment Fund was created in May, 2015.

Income from the fund will be used to award grants to charitable organizations which support the arts in the Shuswap, or to individuals to assist with training and education in the arts, as well as to composers and playwrights for original works, provided such individuals are properly sponsored by charitable organizations.

Contributions to the fund in memory of Aileen are welcome at any time.

Reid Wright Endowment Fund In 1981, Phil Wright met Isabel Reinertson while they were both teaching in School District #83. They married in 1984, and have been fixtures on the Shuswap agricultural and recreational scene for the past 31 years.

Phil was raised in Silver Creek. His mother’s family, the Reids, and his father’s family, the Wrights, arrived in the Shuswap in the early 1900s. Isabel was raised on the family cattle ranch in the Summerland area.

Their parents were community and church leaders, contributing to the economy and quality of life in their respective communities.

The Reid and Wright families established mixed dairy farms along the banks of the Shuswap River. They were actively involved as members and volunteers of many early associations, including the Salmon Arm Creamery Association, the North Okanagan Creamery Association, Shuswap Okanagan Dairy Industries Cooperative Association, the Silver Creek United Church, and the Women’s Institute. They volunteered their homes as part of the Okanagan Regional Library’s rural service, were 4H Club leaders, sat on the Silver Creek School Board, and helped establish Pioneer Lodge in Salmon Arm.

Isabel’s family was like minded in their community.

Phil’s list of community involvement is a long one. He was an active member of the Salmon Arm tennis club for approximately six years, coaching children as well as playing himself. He sat on the executive of the BC Teacher’s Association local. He’s been an active volunteer with the Larch Hills Nordic Society for years as part of the ‘Jack Rabbit’ learn to ski program and currently as part of the ‘Adult Learn to Ski’ program. Whenever there’s an event on the ski hill, you’ll find Phil there. He’s always available to the Shuswap Trail Alliance, especially in the area of the South Canoe Trails.

He and Isabel are also very active in both the recreational and professional equine fields, representing the area at horse shows throughout BC, and Phil is a judge at many horse trials throughout western Canada.

Phil is also a walking storehouse of knowledge about Salmon Arm and the Salmon River Valley. Deborah Chapman, Curator of the Salmon Arm Museum, frequently consults Phil to verify historical details. He received the Queen’s Jubilee medal for his involvement with the Salmon Arm and

Shuswap Lake Agricultural Association (better known as the ‘Fair Board’).

As for Isabel, who has been riding horses since she was three years old, she has served as a director of the Horse Council of BC and as VP for FEI disciplines, and is currently chair of the Dressage Canada Achievement Awards committee. Currently she is a member of the board of directors for Equine Canada, which governs equestrian sport for Canada.

She received the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in recognition of her work in establishing ParaEquestrian Canada. Isabel is also an accredited Equine Canada ‘M’ dressage judge and National Para-Equestrian judge, judging at events throughout the Pacific Northwest. Other interests include her local Rotary club of which she has twice been president. She also served as an Assistant District Governor for Rotary International district 5060, and currently chairs the scholarship committee of her local club.

Growing up in families who were so active in establishing their communities through volunteerism and community service, then following in their footsteps, it’s no wonder it was ‘absolutely a no-brainer’ when

it came to deciding how best to give back to their community.

Because they were familiar with the Shuswap Community Foundation’s role, they chose to establish the Reid/Wright Families Endowment Fund with the foundation. The fund is discretionary because, say Phil and Isabel: “We have faith in the directors to make good decisions and didn’t want to tie their hands when a greater need might exist elsewhere.”

Income earned by the fund will be disbursed annually, at the discretion of the Board of Directors of the Foundation, to award one or more grants in the name of the fund to qualified charitable organizations operating in the Shuswap. Donations to the fund are welcome at any time.

Shuswap District Arts Council A grant from the Bill & Mary Douhaniuk Endowment assisted Shuswap District Arts Council in the creation of a searchable database of local First Nations artists so they can be found by their communities, galleries, and tourists.

Bruce Hall Memorial Endowment Fund the Salmon Arm Museum and Heritage Association, and Bruce became an enthusiastic supporter too, always ready to lend a hand and support the RJ Haney Heritage Park. A generous community supporter, whenever he was asked, he gave.

A practical hardworking man who was ‘good with his hands’, Bruce could build anything and make it work. His family enjoys reminiscing about the many projects Bruce would take on. Whenever they were camping somewhere, Bruce always left the spot in better shape than they found it, including proper outhouses!

A ‘hands-on’ Dad, Bruce was always involved in whatever his kids were doing, whether coaching a sport or just being very supportive and helping out. He was a constant presence in their lives. He enjoyed spending time with his friends;

Born June 22, 1950 in Revelstoke, BC, and raised on the family ranch at Hall’s Landing near Sidmouth, BC, Bruce Hall moved with his family to Langley in 1964, where he completed his high school education. He worked at the Surrey Nursery until 1972, when the opportunity arose to move to Salmon Arm to help build and develop the Skimikin Nursery in Tappen.

Following that, Bruce worked at various jobs in the Shuswap area. During this time he met Trudy Garbutt, and they married in 1977. Two children were born: Jana in 1983 and Joel in 1985.

A self-taught mechanic, Bruce challenged the mechanic’s exam and obtained his certification shortly after purchasing Action Safety in 1992. He was a well-respected business owner for 21 years.

Another Way to Give If you’re thinking of making a donation to a registered charity, it may make more sense to donate eligible securities that have appreciated in value, rather than donating an equivalent amount of cash.

Sadly, Bruce died at the young age of 63 on September 10, 2013. Trudy continued operating the family business until September 2015, at which time Ken Hurren purchased shares in Action Safety. She remains an active partner in the business.

Philanthropy builds stronger communities The word ‘philanthropy’ derives from the Greek word meaning “love of humanity” in the sense of caring, nourishing, developing and enhancing ‘what it is to be human’ on the part of both the giver and the receiver. A conventional modern definition is “private initiatives, for public good, focusing on quality of life.”

Philanthropy doesn’t come in just one shade or size, nor does it come from just one country. People worldwide donate what money and time they can to further the well-being and creative endeavours of others. Through their generous donations our universities and hospitals are better equipped, the marginalized are helped, and our cultural life is vibrant.

Most of us have heard of people like Warren Buffet, who donated 30.7 billion dollars to the Bill and Marion Gates Foundation. Few of us know about the benevolence of such people as Li Ka Shing, in Hong Kong, whose foundation has reformed education and furthered medical research, or Bhagat Puran Singh, who founded The All India Pingalwara Charitable Society that helps the neglected and rejected in society, or Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud of Saudi Arabia who, in July 2015, announced that he was pledging to donate his entire wealth of $32 billion to create a “better world of tolerance, acceptance, equality and opportunity for all.” This makes the Prince the largest contributor to philanthropic interests in the world.

Shuswap Trail builders work together to install a series of new trail stiles that will help to protect sensitive wetland areas in the Larch Hills during the summer months. The project is a joint effort of the Larch Hills Nordic Society, Shuswap Outdoors, the Shuswap Trail Alliance, Rec Sites and Trails BC, and BC Parks, with additional funding support provided by the Shuswap Community Foundation.
