Faux furs inject a bit of fluffy fun to decor KIM COOK THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Faux fur. For decades, the term conjured up images of obvious artificiality. Its fakeness often became a style feature — “fun fur” had colours and patterns so exaggerated there was never any doubt that the fur came from a factory, not a forest. And while the look may have been sometimes passable as real, the “hand,” or feel, gave the game away. Like early versions of the shag rug, faux fur felt rough and plastic-y. Today’s versions are remarkably realistic. Often, the acrylic pile that makes up much of faux fur is augmented with natural fibers like wool, silk and cotton rayon, with various silicones and resins used to improve the lustre. Manufacturers are working with other techniques, like mixing shrinkable and non-shrinkable fibers, as well as fine and coarse fibers, to even more closely resemble complex furs like beaver, mink and river otter. In this season’s home decor offerings, faux furs are common in pillows, throws and stools. They add a touch of drama and cruelty-free coziness. Set decorator Beth Kushnick, whose chic rooms on CBS’ “The Good Wife” garnered such a following that she launched her own line of decorative accessories, called BAK Home and available at Wayfair and AllModern, likes to use faux fur throws and pillows as a textural element. “Keeping them in the same colour palette as the sofa or bed works best and creates another layer,” she says.

For her taste, a little fur goes far. “I use it sparingly, but specifically. Picture a crisp bed of white linens with a white faux fur throw, or a black velvet sofa with black faux fur pillows as a backdrop for some other patterned pillows,” she says. Pottery Barn has throws and pillows in a warm, caramel-hued faux fur, as well as imitation chinchilla and brown bear. (www.potterybarn.com ) At Wayfair, find faux red fox, cheetah and sable patterned throws, all machine-washable. (www.wayfair.com ) A white, shaggy, oversize ottoman at Urban Outfitters would be a fun addition to a family room, or a playful element in an otherwise traditional living space. World Market’s got a faux flokati one on distressed wooden legs; Target’s has a tan and black fur seat and brass hairpin legs. (www.worldmarket.com ; www.target.com ) Unusual faux furs like coyote, lemur and snow leopard are found in accessories at www.fabulousfurs.com . Z Gallerie’s Ludlow slipper chair, all dressed up in ivory plush with Lucite legs, would be a cushy spot to relax in a bedroom. (www.zgallerie.com ) And Restoration Hardware’s oversize ultra-faux-fur throws, in a neutral palette of fog, graphite and cream, are an indulgence best savored on a bed or chaise. CROYDON, N.H. — Hilary and Shane Lentz were hooked on the idea of a tiny house, but they weren’t sure the reality would be so appealing. Their curiosity led them to the hills of New Hampshire, where a business that started at Harvard University rents out tiny houses for $99 a night. The company, Getaway, has drawn visitors from afar who come to sample life in a 160-square-foot house before they dive headlong into the lifestyle. “It’s a way to test-drive tiny house living,” said Jon Staff, the founder and CEO of Getaway. “We operate them a little bit like hotel rooms in the woods.” Across the country, more businesses are letting the curious try out tiny living. Caravan, a hotel in Portland, Oregon, offers six tiny houses ranging from 84 to 170 square feet, for $145 a night. Dozens of tiny houses are available through vacation rental websites, posted by their owners. Definitions vary, but some say a tiny house is anything smaller than 400 square feet. Advocates tout the environmental and financial perks of tiny living. The Lentz couple, from Pittsburgh, had been considering a major downsize for years. It could free them from the mort-

gage on their three-bedroom home. They could build the house on wheels and take it anywhere. By shedding some belongings, there would be fewer distractions. “Having a smaller living space allows you to be more open to experiences, and to really enjoy your day to day life,” said Hilary, 27. But the couple had a few lin-

gering questions. Shane, 29, wondered whether waterless toilets, a common feature in tiny houses, were odourless, too. They both worried about cooking in a tiny kitchen. Hilary wanted to know whether the coziness would fade to isolation. Getaway is the first project at Harvard’s Millennial Housing Lab, a group of business, law and design students exploring

new housing ideas. Staff, a graduate student in business, said his stints living on a boat and in an Airstream trailer inspired him to help spread the tiny house movement. “Small spaces force you out into the world, and I think that’s a good thing,” he said. Backers of tiny living say the movement is growing, and certain areas have become hotspots. Villages of little homes have popped up in cities like Portland and Seattle. Other cities have considered relaxing their zoning rules to open the door for more tiny houses. But industry experts say it’s hard to pinpoint actual numbers behind the trend. In an annual survey, the National Association of Realtors found that the share of home buyers who opted for houses of less than 1,000 square feet has stayed at about 1 per cent for the past five years. “The data is revealing that the tiny-sized home is not what people will consider the American dream,” said Lawrence Yun, the association’s chief economist. He predicts that the growth of big cities will fuel demand for smaller apartments and condos, but not stand-alone houses. Either way, tiny houses have caught the public’s attention as the subject of TV shows and

documentaries. Popular websites entice audiences to ogle at small houses in bucolic landscapes. Some cities are exploring tiny houses as a tool to fight homelessness. The Lentz couple signed up for a rental as soon as they heard online about Getaway. They spent the weekend in a wood-paneled house the size of a shipping container, powered by solar panels. The only water came from a 110-gallon tank. Its composting toilet required a spritz of water from a spray bottle after use. “Our tiny houses are a little bit simpler than the standard tiny house,” Staff said. “They’re rustic.” During their tryout, the Lentzes played board games and went hiking. They built a campfire and looked at the stars. Despite their concerns, the cramped kitchen had plenty of space to prepare a spaghetti dinner. After warming up slowly, the small propane heater eventually warded off the fall chill. “It was very comfortable,” Hilary said. “I was pretty surprised. I didn’t feel that closed-in feeling, even up in the loft.” By the end of their stay, Shane wasn’t sold on the composting toilet. But overall, they said, the trip bolstered their decision to downsize.

As winter approaches, homeowners know they must do certain things to ready their homes for the coming months. 1. Plug leaks Leaky windows and doorways can cost homeowners money year-round, allowing cold air to escape on hot summer afternoons and letting cold air in on brisk winter nights. When such leaks aren’t fixed, homeowners are more liable to turn up their air conditioners or heaters, unnecessarily padding their energy bills along the way. Before winter arrives, check areas around windows and door frames for leaks, as well as any additional openings, such as chimneys, that may allow cold air in. Use caulk or weather strips to plug these leaks, and enjoy your warmer home and lower energy bills as winter weather gets colder and colder. 2. Inspect your chimney If your home has a chimney, chances are you have not used it since last winter. During that time, the chimney has likely accumulated some dirt and grime, and may even have served as home to some uninvited critters. As the season for fireside chats approaches, have your chimney serviced by a professional so it’s ready for use and you are not greeted by some unwanted guests upon lighting your first fire.

3. Clear the yard Autumn days, particularly late autumn days, can be gusty, and strong winds can cause branches to fall off trees. Branches big and small can cause damage to cars, siding and roofs, and smaller branches can get clogged in gutters, potentially causing gutters to back up and leading to leaky roofs that damage a home’s interior. Take a walk around your property at least once per week during the fall, clearing any fallen limbs and trimming branches that appear one strong gust away from falling off of trees. Remove any branches that are hanging over your home and driveway so they don’t pose a threat to your house or vehicles. 4. Turn off outdoor water supplies When temperatures get especially low, pipes with water still in them can freeze and burst, potentially leading to significant water damage. When you no longer need to water the lawn and when temperatures get too cold to wash your car in the driveway, be sure to shut off the water supply to outdoor spigots and sprinkler systems. Once you do that, drain them so no water is sitting in the pipes when temperatures dip. There are many ways to winterize a home, and homeowners should take every precaution necessary to ensure their homes are safe and warm as the cold weather season approaches.
