Kim Grout’s new job will start on Dec. 14.

Kim Grout, chief administrative officer for the City of Pitt Meadows, has a new job.

She has been hired as chief executive officer (CEO) Kim Grout of the Agricultural City CAO Land Commission.

She will begin her duties as the commission’s CEO on Dec. 14.

Grout served the City of Pitt Meadows for 11 years, in roles including chief administrative officer, deputy CAO, and director of operations and development service.

“I’m pleased for Kim, and I think it’s great for her,” said Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker.

Grout’s reputation extends “well beyond” Pitt Meadows, he added.

A community rally outside Maple Ridge’s temporary homeless shelter is planned for this Saturday, Nov. 14, at 11 a.m.

The idea to hold it was prompted by a number of different factors, said Grover Telford, who runs a business in town, and is spearheading rally organization efforts.

“There’s a lot of people who aren’t too happy about what’s going on,” he said. “It’s starts with the fact the business district wasn’t consulted properly on what their feelings were, and whether they wanted it situated where it is. Even if I was

100 per cent okay with what was going on in there, it’s in the wrong spot.”

The second factor, he said “has to do with whether you agree there should be open drug use in the premises and in

front of the premises.

Homelessness is one thing, but there’s open drug use going on there, so that’s another concern.”

In Telford’s mind, “nothing has really changed” from when there was a tent city on Cliff Avenue.

“In my mind it’s taxpayer dollars going into something that is more of a cover-up of a problem, which started because the whole tent thing at Cliff wasn’t addressed right away,” he furthered.

“It grew and it got out

of hand because the bylaw wasn’t being enforced.”

Now, Telford said, “we have this shelter, which looks like an army barracks, but what’s it really achieving? I know it’s only temporary, I understand that, but temporary becomes permanent.”

Telford clarified he’s “not a hard person,” and understands that homelessness has to be dealt with. “But, as far as the drug issue goes, we’re not dealing with it and can’t seem to deal with it on this local level.”

So why hold the rally?

“It’s not about immediate change,” Telford said.

“It’s about setting change in motion.”

For example, “we had the rally against tent city, and tent city is no longer there.”

The B.C. government is funding 15 extreme weather shelter spaces in Maple Ridge this winter, to help people whose health and safety may be threatened by cold, wet weather.

The temporary spaces will be available from now until March 31, at the

Salvation Army’s Caring Place at 22188 Lougheed Hwy., when Maple Ridge issues extreme weather alerts.

It’s the second year The Caring Place has done this, explained the centre’s executive director Darrell Pilgrim.

“Basically, if the temperature goes below zero degrees, or it’s close to zero and the weather is very wet, we open the shelter for people to come in and out of the cold.”

The service is available from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m., on a night-to-night, as-needed, first-come, first-serve basis,

he explained.

The service was offered a few times last year, but the shelter was never at capacity, so no one was ever turned away, and Pilgrim doesn’t anticipate they’ll deal with capacity crowds this year, either.

“In addition to the shelter spaces we already have in Maple Ridge, it is critical to provide emergency shelter during those extremely cold and wet winter nights,” Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows MLA Doug Bing said.

RCMP went knocking on a downtown Maple Ridge apartment early Friday morning. They came with a search warrant and left with “some drugs and other items” and a wish by some tenants in the building that they would return again soon.

An invasive Asian mosquito, which can carry diseases such as encephalitis, was found for the first time in Western Canada – and specifically in a Maple Ridge backyard.

Three incidents investigated.

Ridge Meadows RCMP are investigating two breakins and one robbery from the new Mark’s store, located on the Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge.

“The string of incidents started back on Friday, Oct. 23, when the store was broken into,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. Brenda Winpenny.

A second break in occurred the night of Sunday, Nov 1.

“Police are noticing similarities that may indicate the same person was involved in both of these,” she said.

Police have released a surveillance photo of a suspect. He is described as a Caucasian in his 40s, 5 ft., 8 in. tall with a medium to heavy build. He either has very short blond hair, or is bald.

The store was targeted again this past Friday, during business hours.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., a store employee noticed a male attempting to steal items from the store, said Winpenny.

“When confronted, this male produced a knife and managed to run out of the store,” she added.

“Through this investigation, a suspect has been established, and his arrest is being actively pursued.”

t should have been one of the most exciting times of Jenni Rempel’s young life – at the time, she was a 21-year-old intern living in New York City.

Then, suddenly, she became violently ill.

This was no 24-hour flu.

Rempel was vomiting, had diarrhea and “all kinds of gross things,” she related.

“I had to go to the ER it was so bad,” Rempel said. “I was at the American hospital, which was pretty scary. I was on my own, there, I didn’t know what to do. I never experienced pain like that before, and I thought it would just go away.”

It didn’t. The pain clung to her like a parasite. oday, Rempel said is in significant pain about “75 per cent of the time” and she’s hoping the community will rally around her to help her alleviate what she’s going through, almost every day.

Housing everyone’s right

T

here are approximately 25,000 Syrian refugees expected to arrive in Canada between now and January.

They will need a great deal of help, and we expect that between the government, churches, and charitable citizens, that help will be available. By and large, Canadians are willing to lend a hand, especially in extraordinary circumstances. B.C. could see a relatively high proportion of the new refugees – Toronto and Vancouver and their suburbs are the most favoured destinations for newcomers to Canada.

The goal of rescuing people from overcrowded refugee camps and war zones is laudable. But when there is a crisis, it is easy to mobilize public opinion and the machinery of government to deal with major problems.

Other problems last for years, and become invisible.

If we can house 25,000 refugees in less than two months, why can’t we find proper housing for Canada’s homeless as well?

In Metro Vancouver, there are more than 2,700 people without any kind of housing. That likely misses more people who are sleeping on couches or in their cars.

Homelessness is a kind of permanent crisis. We see it every day, we walk around the people we see on the streets, tossing a few coins or avoiding eye contact. And every few years, the province or cities will make a new drive to try to end homelessness once and for all, but any improvements tend to be temporary.

Homelessness is not an easy problem to solve, and even with a lot of money thrown at it, it can’t be dealt with in a matter of months. But we don’t believe it’s insurmountable. The vast majority of people on the streets can be housed, and they can be helped to better lives.

This is not an argument to deal with homelessness before taking in refugees.

Canada is one of the world’s wealthiest nations. We should be able to help refugees become new Canadians, and help our homeless citizens.

Both need compassion and practical help.

Unfortunately for us, somebody didn’t realize he was kidding – just poking a little fun at his French friends – et voila!

We have bumper cars and people falling off ladders twice every year.

It’s not like this hasn’t been tried before.

There are indications that ancient civilizations toyed with the idea, maybe even trying it for a while, then usually scrapping it before long.

The Romans grabbed that ball and ran with it for several hundred years, making seasonal adjustments to their water clocks to “compensate” for the normal course of the day.

It only proves that someone back then had a Franklinesque sense of humour, and just as there always is, there was someone in a position of authority who didn’t get the joke.

Or maybe they did get the joke. But just

like when they entertained themselves by feeding Christians to the lions, or biting the heads off ostriches, or staging deadly wars and sea battles in the Coliseum, it was a case of someone taking the joke way, way too far.

There has been a lot of speculation about what may have caused the Roman Empire to collapse.

Maybe it was Daylight Saving Time.

Maybe the people stopped laughing, but the powers-that-be kept poking them with that same old groaner year after year, until no one could take it anymore.

It’s time to recognize that, like all good jokes eventually do, this one’s getting old.

It’s time to roll off a good belly laugh, admit to Ben Franklin, wherever he may or may not be, that we’ve been had, and

by Jimminy, that was a real knee-slapper... and stop injecting our whole social system with a case of jet lag every few months or so.

Letters RMH performance was ‘disgraceful’ Dear Editor, I read in The TIMES, that RMH recorded a record fundraiser through the “Arabian Nights Gala.

My, all of you involved in this event must have been euphoric.

Too bad the hard working caretaking staff couldn’t be there to share.

They really need some quality attention. A very depressed, stressed out bunch, not good as this transfers to patients already stressed. Patients need to be greeted and cared for in a positive upbeat manner.

By the way, what does the hospital actually net after this gala, and what actually goes into the hospital coffers?

I have been receiving chemotherapy treatments for the past few months at the very cheery, bright and efficient Abbotsford Cancer Clinic.

A blood clot was discovered Sept. 22 and Abby ER provided a shot and two Warfarin pills the next day.

Six more shots over six days were prescribed along with Warfarin pills to stabilize the situation and it was decided that I could conveniently do this at Ridge Meadows Hospital since I reside in Maple Ridge.

The appropriate treatment procedures were sent from Abbotsford Regional Hospital ER to RMH ER. At RMH, I spent five hours to get one shot and two pills with all paperwork prepared ahead of time. That’s at least three hours of my time totally wasted by the disorganized, poorly scheduled staff who are definitely understaffed and severely demoralized. What a disgraceful performance and what a disgraceful environment.

I’m a businessman who values time as money and RMH sure wasted a lot of it for me on this day, and I’m sure you all appreciate where I’m coming from as I presume you are astute business people yourself. I think it’s lack of proper direction and scheduling for

staff, under-staffing and a dreary, shabby work environment.

Why don’t you go down to the ground floor, all of you on the board, and mingle with patients and staff, in your street clothes, and get your eyes open to the real world of what that hospital needs to be efficient, cheery and upbeat.

Have a look at ARH. They have hardworking, upbeat staff and a great working environment – a very cheery place, a place where staff, patients, and visitors can go to in confidence that they are important and will be looked after in a caring fashion.

I’m a donor to our hospital but I’m reconsidering. I don’t see where my money is being well spent. To my mind, more staff, more positive motivation, better scheduling, and cleaning and brightening the environment would go a long way to respectability and pride.

Dear Editor, To recycling pick-up people: I appreciate the job you do. I’m pro-recycling and do so with every item I possibly can, and you are a direct link to a cleaner planet.

For that I thank you.

What I don’t thank you for is the violence with which you treat my recycling bins.

These are not free bins. I have spent my hard-earned money on them. I would appreciate it if you could take a more care in how you return the bins after you have dumped them into your truck. All three of mine are now cracked in such a way that they have lost all structural integrity and will have to be replaced. I know you are in a hurry, but please, slow down just a little and take care with the property of others.

This would include making sure the bins are back on the curb where I left them, NOT in the middle of the roadway.

Pack it in. Pack it out.

That’s the mantra at Alouette Elementary.

As part of a new Zero Waste School Initiative undertaken by the local school district and Ridge Meadows Recycling Society (RMRS), the elementary school is endeavouring to teach kids the importance of reducing their carbon footprint, while helping schools reduce waste, conserve water and energy, and save money.

Now, students take all lunch and snack waste home.

Anything and everything that they bring to school as part of their lunch – whether they consume all the food or not – is then taken back home. That includes items such as juice boxes and sandwich bags, said recycling’s Dan Mikolay.

“Zero Waste is off to a fantastic start. I am especially excited that school garbage pickup used to be weekly. It has already been reduced to just once a month,” he explained.

“I’ve done numerous waste audits in schools. I found that

90 per cent of waste should have been recycled or composted.”

He noted that the recycling society was founded in the early 1970s by teachers, and he describes it as fitting that the society is working closely with schools in this initiative.

Alouette principal Melanie Roth agrees.

“It’s creating awareness and a capacity in the kids to take care of their own waste. Some kids bring a Ziploc bag to pack their waste home,” Roth said.

There is measurably less garbage in the school, now, said the principal, who used to collect 25 to 30 bags of litter a day on the school grounds. It’s now reduced to just one.

Seven additional components are part of the new initiative and are gradually being introduced.

He started roofing again, but didn’t like the spotty nature of the trade so he trained as a psychiatric nurse, an occupation he took up until his retirement in 1995.

After he moved to Canada in 1967, the father to a grown son and stepson worked at the former Riverview Hospital for 29 years.

“I was involved in starting up the union that they had [at Riverview],” Boyd said.

“I was the president for seven years.”

Yesterday (Nov. 11), Boyd, a member of the Korean Veterans Association (KVA) served as the Sergeant at Arms of the Pitt Meadows ceremony. “I carry the flag,” he said. “I’ve done them [the ceremony] for a few years, now.”

Boyd said he and fellow KVA members “salute to South Korea.”

“I bring the guys to attention and we look towards Korea,” Boyd said. “We sorted it all out as to exactly which direction we should go in, and we do that from the cenotaph.”

Ridge cyclist makes worlds Maggie Coles-Lyster is off to Belgium in January.

Maple Ridge cyclist Maggie Coles-Lyster’s bike racing season hit a high point, as she raced to a bronze medal at the Canadian National Cyclocross Championships, on Oct. 24 in Winnipeg, Man. The 16-year-old athlete’s third-place finish earned her a spot on the Canadian U23 Cyclocross Team to compete at the World Cyclocross Championships this January, in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium.

It will be her first opportunity to compete at a world championship.

She’s also a track and road racer.

From Oct. 9 to 11, Coles-Lyster competed at the Canadian National Track Photo: Local Ride Racing Championships in Maggie Coles-Lyster Milton, Ont., winning five medals, including three national championships.

In addition, she earned a silver medal at the junior national Criterium championships this past June in Thetford Mines, Que. “Maggie loves to race her bikes, and loves to do the many different disciplines our sport offers,” said her coach and father Barry Lyster.

Team members wore their dress clothes and team jersey, as they held out a skate for people to deposit donations into.

They also opted to to put $25 from their “quarter jar fund” into the pot, explained Clay Gagnon, A3 manager.

The quarter jar fund comes from parents who put a quarter into the jar each time the team scores a goal during regular season games.

The funds from the jar typically then go towards a pizza party at the end of the year.

“So the boys not only donated their time, but also a portion of their pizza fund to veterans,” Gagnon said.

“I thought that was really cool,” the manager said.

“The team felt really good about their [fundraising] achievement and are learning a valuable lesson, not only in giving back, but exercising their freedom to do so – the same freedom that our vets fought so hard to protect,” he added.
