National Farmers Union looks forward to working with new minister of agriculture (November 4, 2015) - The National Farmers Union welcomes the appointment of Hon. Lawrence MacAulay of Prince Edward Island as federal agriculture minister.

Canadians have given Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the new Liberal government a strong mandate for change. The NFU looks forward to working with Minister MacAulay in restoring and renewing agricultural policy to maintain the family farm as the primary food producing unit in Canada.

“We look forward to working with the new federal government and our new Minister,” said Jan Slomp, NFU President. “We hope that with greater openness and transparency along with meaningful public engagement, Canada’s agricultural policy will move in a direction that is more helpful to farm families than what we have seen over the past decade.”

Slomp went on to mention several priority issues: “We are happy to see the new gov-

ernment’s commitment to the public service, particularly our scientists.

We encourage Minister MacAulay to make renewal of public funding for agricultural-related research in the public interest a priority, particularly for public plant breeding.”

“The Trans-Pacific-Partnership is a critical file for agriculture. We look forward to being part of the full public examination of the TPP, which the Prime Minister has promised.

The TPP’s impact on supply management, particularly for Canada’s dairy sector and milk supply, is very serious. We believe that as a longtime MP from Prince Edward Island, Minister MacAulay would share our concern for maintaining our supply management system.”

“Canadians gave the Liberal government a strong mandate for real change. Yet, if ratified the TPP’s Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) mechanism would allow corporations to sue governments that pass laws that might reduce their

The infrastructure we require goes beyond roads and bridges — we need to patch the holes in our marketing, transportation, and regulatory institutions and rebuild them to better serve farmers, rural Canada and our economy as a whole.”

Rimbey woman killed in rollover

BY TREENA MIELKE A 25-year-old Rimbey woman is dead as a result of a single vehicle roll over near Ponoka.

Ponoka RCMP reported that members responded to the rollover which occured on Highway 53 west of 46 Street near the Town of Ponoka at about 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 1.

The driver of an F250 appeared to have lost control of the vehicle while travelling eastbound on Highway 53.

After leaving the roadway, the the vehicle rolled several times. The female passenger was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The 24-year-old male driver of the truck was transported by ground ambulance to Red Deer.

The relationship between the occupants is not known, and next of kin notifications are pending.

This collision remains under investigation by members of the Ponoka RCMP Detachment with the assistance of the RCMP’s Integrated Traffic Services unit and the Criminal Collision Investigation Team.

And the words must have been blurred as he read them through bitter tears.

“We regret to inform you, your son lost his life during flying operations at 2 a.m. on March 9, 1944. He was killed during a night takeoff on the east/west runway at RAF Station Einshmer, five miles east of Hader, Palestine.

But, mostly, as the war raged around him, the message he hasn’t written is the one that comes through loud and clear.

He wants to come home.

He doesn’t want to be in the middle of a stinking war where the stench of the dying littering the battlefield assaults the living. He wants to live. He wants to kiss his girl. He wants to have fun.

Go fishing. Play ball.

But he did none of those things, and before he reached his 22nd birthday, he became just another casualty of war.

And they will not grow old!

I close the diary gently and quickly drop a kiss on the forehead of the man in a wheelchair sitting beside me.

He is a war vet having served with the Royal Canadian Signal Corps in Korea. He also served overseas with peacekeeping

corps in Germany and the Belgian Congo.

Today, he sits quietly, gazing out of the hospital window, while the memories of those days when he served his country dance unseen behind his pale blue eyes.

In my own memory, I only recall fleeting glimpses of a young man in a uniform, a stranger really whom slipped in and out of my life, mostly showing up for funerals and weddings. In those tender years of my life I was but a child, too young to understand very much of anything at all about war or the aftermath of war.

My brother was a proud soldier who never really quit being a soldier, even after he was discharged.

On Nov. 11, 2005 he was awarded the Alberta Centennial Medal for his outstanding contribution in helping veterans and their families. In 2001, he assisted National Defence in having

185 Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medals presented to veterans or their next of kin.

He was presented with the Certificate of Merit in 2003 for many years of dedicated service to the Legion.

I think about how he stood proudly at attention through many, many Remembrance Day Services and how he continued to serve his country long after he retired his uniform and carefully hung up his medals.

And, once again, I feel the unmistakable tug of pride as more threads of history are woven into the tapestry of my heritage.

And I feel so very grateful and humbled that these young men in my family, and so many other young men and women sacrificed so much so we, too, can have the privilege of wearing poppies and attending Remembrance Day services.

he received the telegram on that long ago, raw spring day, but family history has kept the heartbeat of the story alive and strong throughout the years.

As for me, I am proud to know these strong and vibrant threads of history have been woven by the lives and times of those gone before me into the colorful tapestry of my heritage.

My family has the diaries of Richard Wellington Warden, killed in action in 1944, and I have pored over the entries, my curious eyes trying to piece together the life of this stranger whom fate has dictated I will never have the privilege of getting to know, much less meeting.

I read the words penned by this young man barely out of his teens and, in those few scribbled lines, I see a different world, a world fraught with danger, thrills and an ever present fear that lurks unseen in the shadows.

Richard (Dick) writes about the thrill of flying and the excitement of receiving those coveted piloted wings.

And he writes about his buddies and hanging out, trying their luck at picking

My father has a fetish for Anthony Bourdain’s television show. It has manifested to the point where I have received countless text messages and emails from dad about this episode or that episode.

Bourdain either went here or went there and ate this or ate that. I don’t have strong inclinations to watch reality TV nor do I have any inclinations to start following a travel/ food-porn Instagram account. The trouble I have when anyone recom-

mends a show to watch is that if it isn’t on Netflix I probably will never get a chance to see it.

I finally decided to risk entering the YouTube domain and watch an Anthony Bourdain episode. I was already at RDC one morning and I wasn’t feeling the academic love.

I rented out a cheesy pair of headphones from the librarian desk and sat a computer in the very back of the lab. These pair of headphones had a cheap microphone headset; I felt like a 1970s’ 747 jumbo jet airplane pilot, but without the cool aviators.

Most of the episodes I found on YouTube were sort of pay per view; I’m a starving student and that wasn’t going to fly.

Eventually I found an older episode that looked like

it might have been pirated onto the video sharing website — Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, Disappearing Manhattan.

This was perfect, I had travelled to Manhattan Island in 2010 and maintain a longing to go back someday.

The episode starts and I write notes on a pad beside me to make it look like I’m watching something educational. Unfortunately I wasn’t even in the zone to watch YouTube movies and I started thinking about all the cool places I like to eat.

There are three places I go to get an economically yet savory steak sandwich: JB’s Lounge at the Black Knight Inn, Post Time Lounge (it’s in the same building as the fancy sushi place in Red Deer), or

The Vault. Anyone of those establishments will cook you a mean steak sandwich at a price a student can afford.

Anthony Bourdain’s episode drew my attention back and I drew on an old memory from when I visited New York. It was the morning after St. Patrick’s Day, my buddy Hobbes and I were terribly hungover and not really making a lot of sense yet. We found some little deli that would make breakfast sandwiches. It was the middle of week and it was busy in this deli: there were mothers, labourers, us, and these suit and tie types rolling in for a coffee and a bagel.

Hobbes and I were waiting for our breakfast orders when this Wall Street looking guy comes

bursting in and hollering “what’s going on in here!”

— in the classic Brooklyn accent. My hangover and this man’s throbbing spontaneity had no business being in a small space that morning. Thankfully breakfast was served without incident and I eventually recovered from my hangover.

The Bourdain episode was coming to an end and the last restaurant he visited in Manhattan wasn’t actually a restaurant but a dive bar. My experience is limited when you consider the vast expanse of knowledge of mankind.

However, I do know a good place to grab a pint and listen to the jukebox where nothing changes about the place except the size of the regulars’ noses — East 40th Pub in Red Deer.

Santa Anonymous back in operation SUBMITTED Once again, with the leaves falling, the Christmas season is fast approaching and the Alder Flats, Buck Lake and Winfield Santa’s Anonymous committee is gearing up to help needy families in our community. The group’s mandate is to help make the Christmas season better for those local families who don’t have the means to put a Christmas dinner on the table or buy gifts for their children.

We are collecting non-perishable food items, unwrapped gifts and monetary donations throughout the three communities. There will be donation boxes and tins at a variety of businesses and schools in the area and we would be grateful for any donations.

The food and gift hampers are customized for each family who will receive staple items such as cereal, canned goods, flour, sugar, tea, coffee, juice, rice and pasta. We will add perishable items just prior to delivery of a turkey or ham, potatoes, buns and Christmas oranges. Our primary goal is to provide food for the families to help carry them through December which can be a difficult month for people on a reduced budget. We also like to include some basic necessities such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes and gloves or socks.

Lastly, we include a gift or two for each family member.

Everything is packed into brightly wrapped Christmas boxes and delivered a few days before Christmas.

Recipients are referred via self referrals, social agencies, schools and churches. We only send hampers to people who are referred to us for the 2015 season. If you know someone who needs extra help this year and would like to refer them please contact one of the above agencies or call Lois Gilbertson at 780-682-2388 or Marian Whitby at 780-388-3774 before the first week in December. The donation boxes will be collected approximately December 13th.

Old fashioned Christmas concert coming to Forshee Hall

Reader questions Bethany Group’s decision to resign as CAO of Rimoka Dear Editor, My neighbour, Jim Schneider and myself attempted to attend the special council meeting called by notice on the Rimbey town office door on Nov. 2.

The meeting was called for 7 p.m. We went to the door at 7 p.m. and again at 7:30 and the door was still locked. We were finally let in after knocking on the door.

I wanted to ask Mayor Pankiw a question about the Bethany Group resigning from their contract to manage the Rimoka Foundation properties.

After listening to the discussions about council’s vision statements for nearly an hour we realized we wouldn’t get an answer to our question so we left the meeting.

I now see that Paul McLauchlin stated in the last Review that the resignation came as a great surprise and to quote him, “It’s regrettable but the board and management were going in two different directions.”

I find his explanation to be

a surprise as The Bethany Group is a well-respected management group working for many senior facilities in other Alberta communities.

It does not make sense that Bethany should just resign for no apparent reason.

In my opinion, The Bethany Group resigned only after it was disclosed that some of the land purchased for the lodge at a cost of $108,000 already belonged to the town by way of a developer’s agreement.

So why did the taxpayers pay $108,000 for land when, in my opinion, we had a legal right to get it for free?

Why are the taxpayers paying $140,000 to build a road when, in my opinion, the developer is obligated and responsible to build the road at his cost?

I believe the developer is getting paid tax dollars for something he is supposed to pay for out of his own pocket and I think the public needs an honest explanation.

Rimoka Foundation working to bring new lodge to reality Dear Editor, The Rimoka Foundation has been working with all the parties involved to do one simple thing and that is build a great home for our seniors.

We strive to do what is best for our community and as such, we stand behind every decision. All of our board members work as stewards of public money and we are doing our best to build the new Rimbey Seniors Lodge as a much needed and important public project.

This is one of the largest public projects the town of Rimbey has ever seen and is not without its complexities and barriers. The foundation has had to become a developer reaching beyond our normal duties. In planning and organizing we need to work within the town of Rimbey’s development requirements. We have also had to create working agreements with adjacent developments to provide infrastructure for the project and ensure that we are using our resources appropriately to build the best lodge possible.

I am very proud of our building committee and their efforts to continue to move this project along. Loanna Gulka, Matthew Jaycox and Rick Pankiw have done an amazing job working cooperatively to keep this project on track. We are excited to announce that the project will be tendered out for construction in the next few weeks and we look forward to getting this project started and done.

Rimbey Minor Hockey welcomed the arrival of the new divider boards this week. These boards divide the rink into a smaller playing area and offer our young players with an opportunity for greater training and development. Rink dividers will increase the effectiveness of our practice and game times as there is less time spent chasing stray pucks, and younger players can actually play the game rather than just skating up and down a huge ice surface.

Thanks to Servus Credit Union for contributing to this worthwhile system.

RMH hosted a cancer fundraiser this past weekend. Players, coaches, and fans dressed in pink and wore moustaches to support breast cancer and MOvember.

Donations were accepted at all home games and a total of $650 was raised.

Why You SHOULDN’T get $1999 Orthodontic Braces From THIS DENTIST… You may have recently heard radio ads about $1999 orthodontic braces and wondered if it would be wise to try to save money on orthodontic care. The answer is sometimes it is better to pay more, but in some cases it is simply a different alternative that isn’t necessarily better or worse. In fact, sometimes even the experts agree it is better to save your money and do the simplest choice.

PRESIDENT OF THE ORTHODONTIC SOCIETY tried to STOP competitor’s advertising?

For almost 10 years a few specialists have been trying to interfere with the advertising of orthodontics by general dentists. There is no state or province in North America that has prevented general dentists from providing braces, but that doesn’t stop certain people from trying. To be fair, there ARE some situations where you should probably ONLY see a specialist. If you need jaw surgery to have an ideal result, and accept the risks of doing this treatment you actually need to see two or three dental specialists plus your general dentist to complete your treatment. If you are especially particular and want to be as close to textbook perfect, then not only should you see a specialist, you should be sure you see a very fussy specialist. Not all specialists are equal.

SAD TRUTH Even specialists are not able to guarantee straight teeth will make you or your child a Hollywood star.

Another reality is while they used to think they could ‘grow lower jaws’ with orthodontic appliances the facts seem to suggest otherwise. Many young teens treated with appliances and Herbst braces simply grew out of their bad bite – and others who were ‘fixed’ were actually only posturing their jaw forward and not really improved. The good news is even if the bones of the jaws are a mismatch- typically the lower being too small to match the upper, it is not a fatal condition. Many people live to be over ninety years old with this kind of bite, but if you are concerned about the retruded profile or other effects, as an adult you may choose jaw repositioning surgery…but the sad truth is no dentist, and not even specialists can actually claim to grow a mandible more than it is programed to do by genetics. It is sometimes better to do little or nothing for a teenager when it is clear they will want jaw surgery later anyway. It is simply not wise to keep braces on for extended periods of time, waiting for the person to stop growing. As a parent you may want to do the best for your child but sometimes that means waiting.

Dental professionals tell you this, but if you don’t really understand you may be wasting your money.

Who wants to be told their child may be better off waiting and choosing jaw surgery when he/she is an adult?

Sometimes it is better to do less and here’s an example: A child was being teased about her ‘buck teeth’ which were spaced out and sticking out of her mouth even when her lips were closed. She clearly needed something done, but it was also obvious she was going to need jaw re-positioning at a much older age to improve her profile. If you watch Dr. Pol the veterinarian on television, you’ll notice his wife has a very small lower jaw. People often look better when their jaws match, but as mentioned, this cannot always be corrected as a teen. What did Dr. Zuk recommend? He suggested not doing what his friend the orthodontist recommended, and instead suggested a very inexpensive, limited orthodontic treatment. With $1999 braces the young girl’s smile would be little better and she wouldn’t be as selfconscious. Spending $7000 would not have corrected the true skeletal problem anyway.

Other situations where ‘$1999 & up braces’ may help teens & adults include mild to moderate crowding, twisting or spacing of the upper teeth- especially when you can’t afford a specialist for comprehensive or ‘full treatment’. Limited treatment often just focuses on making your smile look better and not correcting all the things you could if your budget was higher.

Rimbey high school drama class to perform A Christmas Carol

BY TREENA MIELKE There’s lots of teasing and good natured bantering going on in Shauna Murdock’s drama room right now, but, even so, the students are quite serious about giving stellar performances of the classic play, A Christmas Carol, to their audience.

The Rimbey high school drama students will present, A Christmas Carol, at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre on Nov. 20 and 21 as part of a dinner theatre. The dinner, catered by Starkist Catering, will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the two-act play at 7 p.m.

Murdock said rehersals are going well.

While she said beginning the new school year by rehearsing a play is a bit ‘tricky’ it is all coming together well.

“A Christmas Carol is one of my favourite plays,” she said.

Seventeen-year-old Jamie Russell who will play Scrooge in the play is excited about her part. Last year she played Thomas in the school’s rendition of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

“I wanted to be Scrooge,” she said. Last year my role was all cheery and happy, but playing Scrooge is the complete opposite.”

Sixteen-year-old Bryce Sargeant who plays Bob Cratchit is also enjoying his role.

“Bob Cratchit is a beat down father of four,” he said. “It’s a good role and I find acting fun. My favourite part of the play is when the ghosts keep scaring Scrooge and finally he realizes that Christmas isn’t so bad.”

For Keyanna Levie playing the part of Tiny Tim is fun and a good way to break into acting. A Christmas Carol is the first production she has played in. The 15-year-old Grade 10 student is hoping to land some bigger roles in the future.

But for now she is happy with her two short appearances on stage where she will have an opportunity to voice Tiny Tim’s famous Christmas quote.

The Bentley Museum Board held its annual general meeting on October 20. Executive positions will be decided at its regular November meeting.

More artifacts are continually being donated. Recently they received the Bentley United Church bell that was originally mounted in the Bentley Methodist Church built in 1905 and a centennial banner of the Peterson family donated by Marg Martin.

The museum will be open on November 11, Remembrance Day from noon to 4 p.m. and will offer an extensive military display. Most of it is local.

War vet served with Dutch army in Indonesia

BY TREENA MIELKE They say we remember moments, not measured by a ticking clock, but by flashbacks that re-occur, quick as lightening, in the mind’s eye as if they had happened yesterday.

So it is with Bob Buist, a 90-year-old war vet from Holland who came to Canada with his wife, Jean, 62 years ago.

He remembers, in fact, a moment on a day in April, 1945 when Canadian soldiers, who mistook him for a German soldier, leveled their guns on him.

“I thought I would never see daylight again,” he said.

Buist, the second oldest of nine children, had been working in the field with his dad on their dairy farm.

His father, noticing it was 4 p.m., told him to take the team of horses home and do the chores. When the young man drove the horses home, the streets of

the town where he lived, near Amsterdam, in the province of Groningen, Holland were lined with Canadian soldiers and trucks, who had taken the town by storm. The war was over, and Holland, an occupied country, was being liberated.

It was a happy time for Holland, but, even as the Second World War came to an end, the war in the far east continued to rage in Japan and Indonesia.

For Buist the end of the war was only the beginning of his time as a solider. In 1947 the young man packed up his gear and left family and friends fight with the Dutch army in Indonesia.

“There were many local groups we had to fight. The thieves and murderers all wanted to bring down the Dutch government who wanted an independent Indonesia with a trade mission for spices, rice and fruit,” he said.

Being a solider taught Buist many things, but perhaps the most important thing he learned was the value of friendship.

“Here I learned to make friends and be a friend.

Yes, you grow close in difficult times, because you need each other.”

A total of 6,200 men lost their lives during the Indonesian war.

While serving in Indonesia, Buist contracted malaria and yellow jaundice and was hospitalized in Palembang, Sumatra for three weeks.

While in the hospital he met a nurse whom he had gone to school with.

“What a pleasant surprise,” he recalled. “I met her again back in Holland on a bike tour, but later, she immigrated to Australia with her whole family.”

While Buist was in Indonesia, his mother passed away of cancer. It was a particularly difficult time for the young soldier.

“There was no regular mail coming into Sumatra and my mother had passed away and was buried by the time I found out (of her death),” he said.

In 1950 Buist returned to Holland, but the aftermath of the war was everywhere.

“There was no work.

Houses and buildings were bombed. There was devastation everywhere and there was no room for all the soldiers in Holland.”

The young man, now married to his sweetheart, Jean, made plans to immigrate.

They tossed around several ideas of where to go including the West Indies and the East Indies, but in the end it was Canada they decided upon. continued on page 17

They arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax in the spring of 1953, traveling to Alberta and finally settling on two quarter sections near Lethbridge, where they remained for 10 years before coming to the Rimbey area.

Every five years they return to their native homeland of Holland to visit family and friends.

Immigrating to Canada was a good choice and Buist has no regrets about his decision to come here.

“Yes, Canada has been good to us,” he said. “We were given new opportunities in this big country where there is room for everyone.”

Memories and reflections of Pier 21

BY BOB BUIST It was a beautiful morning when we arrived in Halifax in the spring of 1953.

Generations of future Canadians passing into a new life should serve as a history lesson.

Canada’s newest museum opened wide for all the public to see on Canada Day, 1999, and cannot be allowed to vanish.

Pier 21 represents all ports of entry and all the experience that comes with it.

It is our very multicultural character that makes Pier 21 even more import-

ant because it was right there that new Canadians began their new lives.

It would, therefore, be a citizenship of choice rather than citizenship of chance.

My first memories of Canada will always be Pier 21 because it was at that time it was not much more than a dismal holding pen through which immigrants were herded to the coal trains that took them to the west.

From its opening in 1928 to its closing in 1971 more than 1.5 million people were welcomed through this vast expanse. My wife, Jean and I were two of those people.

Pier 21 also holds all the memories and experience of more than 100,000 war brides and refugees and before that almost 400,000 Canadian Service men on their way overseas.

And after the war was over those that served came back through the same port.

All have been made welcome and given choices and new opportunities in this big country where there is room for everyone.

We are proud because our children won’t need to immigrate. We have done the immigrating for them and for their future children, too.

This past summer eighteenyear-old Bentley Grade 12 graduate Heather McLaren returned for a second year as the Bentley museum’s summer-season hostess.

She said she had learned a lot last year and so was more comfortable giving out information and talking with visitors this year.

“It was extra busy this year compared to last year because of the town celebrating its centennial year,” she said. “My favorite part (of the summer job) was to get dressed up in period clothes for the centennial and hearing the people (visitors to the museum) reminisce and tell their stories. Many visitors were actually other people that had grown up here, and gone to school here, and came back to see other people here.”

During the week of the fair and centennial celebration McLaren tried to wear distinctive period clothing circa 1910-15 from around the time Bentley was being created.

When riding on the parade float she wore a 1915 dress adorned by a lovely hat and antique jewelry to relate with the year Bentley was actually incorporated.

Clothing she wore included a tea dress, shirtwaist blouse, period skirts, and antique jewelry. Some of the clothing was borrowed from the Michener House Museum and some pieces were reproductions of period styles rented from a theatre group in Ponoka that had been used in their production of Anne of Green Gables.

Before enrolling in college McLaren said she is going to take a year off and possibly work part time while she decides what she wants to do.

“You want a job that you will like, but there needs to be a job in that field (when you are done college),” she said.

“I would like to maybe work with special needs kids. I feel I would have a compassionate connection with them.”

Visitors who had signed the guest book were local, came from all around Alberta, from out of province like BC, some from Ontario and from NWT, and indeed came from out of country like from the UK, USA and even Colombia, South America.

The Bentley Museum is located at 4929-51 Avenue with an original area windmill from the area marking the spot.

On most Wednesday mornings some of the museum’s volunteer board members meet to work on displays and cataloguing. Anyone interested in the museum is invited to drop in. To arrange a tour or special visit call Cora at 402748-2455 or Betty at 403-7482744. Admission is always free.

Rimbey Spartans football team to head to playoffs

BY TREENA MIELKE Rimbey high school football team is on a winning streak and have finished the season as top seed heading into the playoffs.

The team trounced Breton last Wednesday with a 52 - 20 win.

“The boys played well,” said Coach Bill Bramfield.

“The field was snow covered, but it was a solid team effort.”

The first game of playoffs will be held Nov. 14. It is yet to be announced as to which team Rimbey will be up against and where the game will be.

The Spartans defeated Hanna last Thursday 56 42, boosting them to number two in the league.

has lost to St. Joseph’s Christian School from Brooks and also to Breton this year.

Bramfield said the competition has been tough this year.

“Every team has lost at least one game,” he said.

The league operates on a tiered system with 17 teams. There are six teams in Rimbey’s tier including Breton, Hanna, Brooks, Millwoods Christian, St. Josephs and The Holy Redeemer School.

The Spartans have won the provincial championship several times including last season.

Bramfield sees the team as becoming increasingly competent on the football field and is proud of his players.

“We are getting to be a better team as the years go on,” he said.

The coach is looking forward to the playoffs and is confident his team will work cohesively, both defensively and offensively.
