Lest We Forget

For whatever reason, Frank Odberg’s family in Ghent, Belgium, took a liking to Vernon soldier Leo James (Sonny) Netzel.

The corporal with the 1st Canadian Scottish Regiment was stationed at a military base in the Second World War outside Ghent, and, on weekends, he found himself welcomed into the Odberg home for meals and company.

When Sonny was killed in action near Ghent on Oct. 8, 1944, he was buried in the Canadian cemetery there with other soldiers.

“The Odbergs have been the caretakers of Sonny’s grave,” said Darwin Netzel, 74, a retired coroner and insurance claims adjuster, who lives in Armstrong and is the proud nephew of Sonny and Sonny’s brother, Frank Theodore Netzel, also KIA in the Second World War. The responsibility of maintaining Sonny’s grave near Ghent has now been undertaken by the Odberg’s grandson, Frank, who paid a visit to Vernon this summer.

Pte. Frank Netzel was with the Royal Canadian Medical Corps in a field ambulance unit aboard a ship in the Meditteranean Sea en route toward an invasion of Sicily when it was was sunk on July 5, 1943. Frank’s body was never recovered.

He is believed to have been the first Vernon casualty of the Second

World War. Frank and Sonny Netzel were brothers, two of nine siblings who arrived in Vernon with their family in 1926 and settled on property today occupied by the Canada Safeway parking lot at Vernon Square Mall (the last surviving sibling is a sister, Stella, who, at 98, still lives in Vernon.

She and her husband operated Openshaw’s Five and Dime on Vernon’s Main Street for years).

They were also brothers in arms.

Frank, who married Mabel Morgan of Lucky Lake, Sask., was working for the CN Railway, a job he started in Vernon then left to pursue a position with the railway in Pyramid, between Blue River and Valemount.

Leo, single, had been a jockey, having raced at Kin Race Track,

Vancouver, the U.S. and even Mexico, where Netzel has a picture of his uncle aboard the horse Exilda in the winner’s circle at Agua Caliente near Tijuana.

Frank and Sonny realized their services were needed overseas.

Both signed up without hesitation – Frank enlisting first – and both

received basic training at the Vernon Army Camp.

Darwin Netzel’s father, John, one of the four Netzel brothers, was conscripted into the war but was not allowed to serve. The decision was made for him that his family had already lost two sons in the battle.

The brothers in arms were honoured posthumously with a mountain.

Mount Netzel is a 7,027-foot peak near Valemount. Darwin Netzel’s daughter, Rhonda, was the first person to climb to the summit on Aug. 6, 1991.

She erected a cairn containing various family pictures.

The treatment from the Odbergs to the naming of a mountain moves Darwin Netzel in regards to a pair of relatives he never got the chance to meet.

“It all feels wonderful,” he said, wearing a poppy while overlooking his uncles’ news clippings and other material at his Armstrong home. “It’s for all Canadian soldiers. When I see one I always thank them for their service.

“These were my uncles, my heroes.”

The Fleetwoods immigrated to Canada in 1954 and worked for the aluminum smelter plant in Kitimat.

They moved to Malakwa and operated the Fleetwood Cafe on Highway 1, with moves later to Red Deer, Sicamous and Salmon Arm before enjoying life in Vernon.

Fleetwood will be attending the Remembrance Day service at Kal Tire Place with Legion members.

Because this red flower recalls the famous poem “In Flanders Fields”, written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae during the First World War. This is the most frequently read and quoted poem about war.
