Remembrance Day Ceremony From The Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day is an important day in the Canadian calendar and is an opportunity to give meaning to past sacrifice and acknowledge the courage of those presently serving.

Each year, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we gather in memorial parks, community halls, workplaces, schools and homes to observe a moment of silence and mark the sacrifice of so many.

Take part in Remembrance ceremonies across Canada Legion members in Branches from coast to coast to coast are proud to organize Remembrance Day Ceremonies in over 1400 communities across Canada. Through our Branches, the Legion perpetuates the traditions of Remembrance and ensures Canada ‘never forgets’. We encourage all Canadians to participate in your local Remembrance Day Ceremonies. These solemn and poignant observances remind us of the service and sacrifice of the men and women who protect our freedoms, and provide an opportunity to

give thanks and honour the fallen.

In Cranbrook, a parade will start at 10:30 a.m. behind the East Kootenay Credit Union and will head to Rotary Park, at 1st Street between 10th and 11th Avenue South. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m.

Kimberley’s ceremony will occur at the Cenotaph across from the former Legion building in downtown Kimberley, starting at 10:30 with a lunch at the Elks Hall for all the public after the ceremony.

The National Remembrance Day Ceremony In addition to ceremonies across Canada, the Royal Canadian Legion also organizes and conducts the National Remembrance Day Ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa.

Broadcasted and covered by media nationally, the National Remembrance Day Ceremony involves Veterans of all wars and peace support operations, as well as numerous dignitaries, the Canadian Armed Forces, the RCMP, members of the Diplomatic Corps and youth representatives.

We invite you to join

the tens of thousands of Canadians at the National Remembrance Day Ceremony on November 11.

Show your support by wearing a Poppy Every year, from the last Friday in October to Remembrance Day, Canadians are invited to wear a Poppy as a symbol of recognition of the debt owed to those who gave their lives for our freedom.

Many also choose to place their Poppy on a cenotaph or memorial after the ceremony on November 11.

Poppies are distributed freely to anyone who wants one. The Legion gratefully welcome donations to the Poppy Fund. Through the generosity of everyone who takes part in our Poppy Campaign, the Legion is able to serve Veterans and their families on a daily basis.

To further support our Veterans – past and present – anyone can become a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. You can also show your pride and appreciation by purchasing Poppy and commemorative items from the Poppy Store. All proceeds support Legion programs.

Soldier serves in both world wars, despite losing brothers

Imagine, if you can, having five of your sons volunteer to fight for their country and only having one come back home.

This is the case for the Tardy family. A Cranbrook resident related to the family dropped off pictures and related the tragic tale in time for this Remembrance Day edition.

The names of the four sons who died in World War I are still read today in Newcastle Ontario. Frank, John, Joseph and Robert fought bravely and gave their lives in that conflict.

John Jr. enlisted with the 55th Battalion and was killed in battle on March 30, 1917.

Robert was also with the 55th Battalion and was killed in action

the same year.

Joe was killed while serving with the Royal Navy and Frank was with the Flying 25th when he was killed in action.

Isadore Tardy was the only one to come back from the trenches of WWI. Born in 1898, he joined the 243 Battalion in 1917 and was promptly posted overseas, where he was transferred to the 5th Western Cavalry.

After braving the horrors of that war and knowing his brothers gave the ultimate sacrifice, he still signed up for action in World War II. He survived, started a family and did visit the memorial back east.

He and his wife came back to Newcastle in 1971 and toured the community and

were given the opportunity to meet with old friends from the war.

His story is unfortunately one of the many tales of loss that come from boys who joined the armed forces to fight for their country.

While many returned as men, many more stayed, interred in the ground where they fought—now ageless and remembered on this special Remembrance Day.

A local resident shared the worst possible letter a family could receive during wartime. This letter reported that Private Thomas Sharry Fitzpatrick was killed in action in 1944. Because of security at the time, the date and name of unit were omitted.

Soldier was a poet and family man From Wendie Cameron/Joan Jobe in memory of our Dad. Private Robert (Bob) Dicken, from Kimberley, served with the Glengarry Highlanders (Glengarrians.) He enlisted in Trail on March 2, 1942 and took his training in Prince George. He was called to active duty in August of 1943 and served in France, Holland and Germany.

His regiment was part of the forces who landed in France on D Day that were instrumental in Germany’s surrender in 1945. He came home to Kimberley in August of 1945.

Dad spent his free time writing letters to his wife, Gwen (nee Bryant) and writing poems. He lost many good friends in the war and did not speak of it with us but he left his medals, pictures, souvenirs and news clippings for us to treasure.

Some lie in death, it’s a sickly sight.

The cry of the wounded, as over you’re bent.

“Up the Glen,” was the cry that arose.

The dike appears through the fog and smoke.

The battle is won, the enemy’s broke.

A soldier was never without his service and pay book. The family of Harry Olen Totten, a soldier from Elko who enlisted in Fernie in August of 1940, (pictured above), shared this picture and Totten’s service book from WWII. Inside were details of his health, pay records and medals earned during the war.

Dedicated to the SD & G Highlanders and especially to my buddy Ben, who gave his life that we might live.

Meet the man behind the famous poem The name of John McCrae (1872-1918) may seem out of place in the distinguished company of World War I poets, but he is remembered for what is probably the single bestknown and popular poem from the war, ‘In Flanders Fields’.

He was a Canadian physician and fought on the Western Front in 1914, but was then transferred to the medical corps and assigned to a hospital in France.

He died of pneumonia while on active duty in 1918. His volume of poetry, ‘In Flanders Fields’ and Other Poems, was published in 1919.

Before he died, John McCrae had the satisfaction of knowing that his poem had been a success. Soon after its publication, it became the most popular poem on the First World War. It was translated into many languages and used on billboards advertising the sale of the first Victory Loan Bonds in Canada in 1917. Designed to raise $150,000,000, the campaign raised $400,000,000.

In part because of the poem’s popularity, the poppy was adopted as the Flower of Remembrance for the war dead of Britain, France, the

United States, Canada and other Commonwealth countries.

Today, people continue to pay tribute to the poet of “In Flanders Fields” by visiting McCrae House, the limestone cottage in Guelph, Ontario, where he was born. The house has been preserved as a museum. Beside it are a memorial cenotaph and a garden of remembrance.

The symbolic poppy and John McCrae’s poems are still linked and the voices of those who have died in war continue to be heard each Remembrance Day.
