Air Force veteran recalls life during Second World War Nick Melnechuk, 93, of Lacombe, served in the Royal Canadian Air Force

orn in 1922 in Sheho, Sask., Nick Melnechuk, 93, of Lacombe still considers himself a ‘youngster.’

And that’s exactly what he was, a young man, only 18-years-old when he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) during the Second World War. Melnechuk came from a large family and three of his brothers served in the army in the Second World War. “I also had two sisters that worked in munitions plants in Toronto during the war,” said Melnechuk. “So our family of 11, we contributed to the war.

“I was 18 years old during the Second World War. So, I went to the recruiting unit and I said, ‘I don’t want to join the army.’ I was working in the Winnipeg General (Hospital) as an orderly at the time, so they said, ‘Oh no, we want you in the Air Force.’ So I went in to the air force.”

In 1942, Melnechuk began training in the second course medical assistance in Trenton, Ont. followed by more training in Pearce, Alta.

As an medical assistant in the RCAF, Melnechuk served in the medical inspection unit, where RCAF members were looked after before they were sent to an English hospital.

“I got all the training,” he said. “I did everything - suturing, I looked after the pharmacy. That’s what we trained for.

“People would come in sick and we would look after them and then we would send them to the hospital or we would give them treatment, do their blood work, urine analysis, whatever else we had to do.”

Melnechuk was stationed in England for three years. He still remembers that day when his feet first hit the English soil, as well as first seeing action.

“When we landed in Scotland, they took us by train to Bournemouth, England, ” he said. “I went to bed that night and in the morning, I got up and had to get myself something to eat and I could hear planes flying and guns going off.

“I walked out through a clearing and Germans were over there dropping bombs on us and I saw the first bomb go off. And I’ll tell you, I broke all the records. I ran back into the building and into the dugouts. I will never forget that. I’m 18-yearsold. What do you expect? But then you got used to it after.”

After that, Melnechuk was transferred to Yorkshire, England to the RCAF group bomber command.

“I remember our planes going overseas and dropping bombs,” he said. “They flew at night all the time. The Americans couldn’t fly at night during the war. They

He was then transferred to London to a new medical unit and with the intention that he would play hockey.

Hockey is a sport that is deeply embedded into our Canadian identity. During the Second World War, as many families throughout Canada faced hardships brought on by the war, hockey continued on to be that great social connector, including with those in the service overseas.

Melnechuk was one of the many RCAF members who played hockey overseas and he participated in the RCAF Overseas Championship in Glasgow, Scotland in 1944.

The year before, Canadian-born goaltender for the Detroit Red Wings Johnny Mowers enlisted in the Air Force and once overseas, became the goaltender for Melnechuk’s team in the 1944 championship, which they ended up winning.

“We had a professional hockey player on our team and before every game, he would get dressed up and he would get

so nervous that he would throw up. We were just there for fun,” said Melnechuk of Mowers’ nerves.

Melnechuk remained stationed in London until he was discharged. By Christmas 1945, after the end of the war, he was on his way back home to Canada.

It was again this connection of hockey that brought Melnechuk first to Lacombe in 1946.

“After the Air Force, I got my leave and I wrote them a letter asking if I could play hockey and they said, ‘Yeah, come on,’ so I came here (Lacombe) and played for five years,” he said.

Melnechuk played for the Lacombe Buffaloes, a senior-level hockey team at the time that played teams in the region like Red Deer and Leduc.

During that time, Melnechuk met his wife Thelma in Lacombe in a restaurant.

After a whirlwind romance, they were married in 1947.

In 1951, Melnechuk returned back to the service.

“I made a career in the Air Force until 1969,” he said. “I was stationed all over

Canada, like Halifax and Quebec.”

While he was stationed in Quebec during this time period, Melnechuk had the privilege of testing out one of the very first SkiDoos made by J.A. Bombardier. Bombardier created the first mass-produced snowmobile and in essence, created a new winter sport. Melnechuk, his sergeant and a few others went on trip in the deep snow to test out the new machine.

“We slept in a tent, put a fire in there and had some rations,” he said. “I feel honoured that we tested the first Ski-Doo ever made.”

Melnechuk and his wife returned to Lacombe after he concluded his service with the Air Force. Shortly after, he joined the Royal Canadian Legion Lacombe Branch No. 79 and has been a highly active member ever since.

“I’m still grateful at my age that I’m still here, that I can go to the Legion and still help out,” said Melnechuk. “It’s really something special.”

Donations gratefully accepted. The annual parade follows at 10:30 a.m. If weather is inclement, the parade will start from the Fire Hall on Hwy. 12 and cross the street to the Memorial Centre for the 10:50 a.m. commencement of the Remembrance Day ceremony.

In addition to the traditional marching of the colours and speeches by local dignitaries, attendees will be treated to a moving solo of “In Flanders Fields”, sung by Bob Tattrie and accompanied by bagpipes.

The Honour Roll (listed dead) and the Last Post played by a bugler from the local Lions’ band fol-

low. More pipe and bugle music will lead to the laying of wreaths.

Another highlight of the day is the Open House at the Flat Iron Interpretive Museum from 1 – 4 p.m.

In conjunction with its current exhibit “Lest We Forget: Our Brave Hearts 1914-1919”, the Museum will be displaying copies of the Lacombe & County Honour Roll that memorializes each individual from the Lacombe and Lacombe County region who served in Canada’s wars.

More socializing and music happens at the Legion too – attendees are welcome to enjoy sandwiches and refreshments (children upstairs, adults downstairs). The community potluck supper starts at 5:30 p.m.; bring enough food for your family and one more person.

The lasting impact of the Lest We Forget Club

BY SARAH MAETCHE LACOMBE EXPRESS Along 50 Ave. in front of the Lacombe Memorial Centre, sits the cenotaph, anchoring what we know today as the Lest We Forget Park.

It is due to efforts of a group of enthusiastic women in Lacombe almost a century ago that we have this park, surrounding gardens, the cenotaph and a place to remember. The Lest We Forget Club truly did have a lasting impact in Lacombe and the surrounding area.

The Lest We Forget Club was formed on Feb. 22nd, 1922, by a group of women who were wives, widows, mothers and sisters and the like of veterans of the First World War. They were first an auxiliary to the Great War Veterans Association, which later became the Royal Canadian Legion.

The club received its charter in December of 1922 and boasted 28 members, all who were female. The very first president was Mrs. Alfred Lundie, who held the position for seven years. The vice-president was Mrs. ‘Dr.’ Simpson, with Mrs. Anna Aldwinkle as secretary and Mrs. Roger Oakley as treasurer on the first executive board.

Quickly, after their initial formation, the group received land, a 137 ft. by 240 ft. parcel, from the Lacombe School Board to be used for a memorial park. The local community donated money for memorial trees, but most of the funds for the park, garden and cenotaph were raised directly by the group.

The group was well remembered for organizing many fundraisers, some that were kind of zany, all to raise funds for their cause.

One Halloween, the ladies dressed up like

gypsies and did tea leaf readings to raise funds. In that one night, the group raised $300, which would be equivalent to almost $4,000 today. It was also reported one fundraiser idea included a fortune telling attraction at a local fair.

Once the group raised enough money for the park and garden portion, they began raising money towards a new task - placing a $3,500 marble statue, the cenotaph, which would have names of those who lost their lives in the war inscribed on it, in the centre of the park.

Once this goal was achieved, an unveiling was planned for October of 1924. The ladies invited the Prince of Wales to unveil the tribute statue at the park’s opening ceremony.

The royal secretary declined the offer.

The cenotaph, with 72 names inscribed, and memorial park were then unveiled on Oct. 31st, 1924 by R. G. Brett, the then Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.

Author Grant MacEwan said of women’s organizations of the time, “Of all the organizations in the community since the beginning of settlement of Lacombe, the Lest We Forget Club accomplished the most.”

Throughout the following years, several improvements were made to the park, including adding an iron fence, gates, sidewalks, shrubbery and flower beds.

The park continued to be maintained by the club but was later turned back to the Town of Lacombe in April of 1955, with one condition outlaid by the president, Mrs. Seymour Edmunds, that the park’s name remain - Lest We Forget.

Passport to Christmas starts on Monday

BY SARAH MAETCHE LACOMBE EXPRESS Now running for the fourth year, it’s that time of year again for Passport to Christmas.

On Nov.9th, the Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce will be launching the popular shop local program for the holidays.

During a five-week period over the holiday shopping season, Lacombians are encouraged to spend their money within the community by filling out a ‘passport’ with a stamp placed for every $10 spent.

Passports can then be dropped off at eight locations through out the City

to be entered in draws for ‘Lacombe Bucks.’

Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Monica Bartman said this year the program has expanded and boasts many more participating businesses as well as more printed passports - 13,000 to be exact.

“It’s the fourth year and it kind of keeps growing every year,” she said. “I think as people hear about it, they get excited.”

With active community and business participation last year, a confirmed $750,000 was spent locally in the 2014 program. The program received back

“It’s just a small portion of what is actually spent in our city and I think even

if those are dollars that would have been spent here anyways, it’s nice to be able to show people a number and to say ‘This is what you are actually contributing to our local economy,’” said Bartman.

This year, passports can be picked up and stamped at 46 participating businesses in the community.

The amount of available passports has also more than doubled. In 2014, just a mere 8,000 were given out.

Passport to Christmas Organizer Helen Peck said this year the Chamber has also increased the amount of prizes for filled out passports as well as incomplete passports, in case shoppers may have incomplete passports in their hands when the deadline hits.

ond is $750 in Lacombe Bucks, third is for $500 in Lacombe Bucks followed by $250 in Lacombe Bucks for an incomplete passport.

With the wide variety of participating businesses this year, it shouldn’t be too hard for participants to fill out their passports.

A larger variety of businesses are participating in the program, including all three of Lacombe’s major grocery retailers, specialty food stores, hardware stores, salons and pharmacies, to name a few.

Peck said the program also has many participants from out of town, with a reach further out of the community than many may think.

The program doesn’t just help keep shoppers dollars within the Lacombe area during the holiday shopping season, but it makes

it easy for consumers to spend their money in the community after the holiday season with the Lacombe Bucks prizes.

Also new to the program this year, and to engage some social media mojo, is a hashtag that participants can use while they shop throughout the Passport to Christmas program. Participants are encouraged to post photos and tweet with #getstamped2015.

“They can take a picture of their purchases or maybe it’s a photo of themselves in the store.

It’s just to create some buzz,” said Bartman.

The draws for the prizes will take place on Dec. 23rd on air on Sunny 94 between 11 a.m. to noon.

Deadline for completed passports is Dec. 18th. at 5 p.m.

It’s time for us to remember once again

Although we are less than one week away from Remembrance Day, it’s important to draw attention to such a significant day.

Next Wednesday, Nov. 11th, Canadians all across the country will be taking time out of their busy day to recognize a moment of silence at 11:11 a.m. or attend a service in their community.

Remembrance Day and the traditional two minutes of silence exist as a way for us to remember - to remember those Canadians who served in the First and Second World Wars.

It is also important to remember Canada’s wartime contributions over the past 70 years, including our roles in the Korean War, the

Gulf War, various peace keeping missions and our recent involvement in Afghanistan.

In our reflection, we tend to focus on remembering those who lost their lives serving in these wars.

These individuals deserve to be recognized for giving the ultimate sacrifice to their country, but we must also acknowledge those who survived those wars and are still walking among us.

Canada’s veterans are a living evidence of our country’s involvement in global conflicts. It was these heroes who formed the Royal Canadian Legion in 1926, a national organization that consists of veterans and their families with the simple goal - remember. In

conjunction with the ladies’ auxiliary, the Legion has made it the responsibility of its members to preserve Canada’s wartime history.

For almost 90 years, veterans and members have kept the memory of Canada’s contributions to the war and the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice alive through their work and contributions to the community.

During the month of November, legion members work hard handing out poppies, visiting schools and participating in Remembrance Day services. Throughout the year, they also contribute to the community through various fundraisers, poster contests and projects, among their regular Legion events from Tuesday

to Saturday. Locally, our Legion has held a candle light tribute, a colour guard march on Canada Day and also participated in the tulip planting ceremony at the Lest We Forget Memorial Park.

They are an active group of people and we cannot afford to forget what the Legion works so hard to keep us remembering.

The Royal Canadian Legion Lacombe Branch No. 79 will be holding their annual Remembrance Day ceremony at the Lacombe Memorial Centre beginning at 10:45 a.m. on Nov. 11th, following the colour guard march. This year, as we reflect, let us not forget the importance of what these men and women do on a daily basis.

Canada’s environmental assessment system not working During his election campaign, Justin Trudeau promised to make environmental assessments credible again.

He committed to a new, fair environmental assessment (EA) process that will, among other things, respect the rights of those most affected, such as Indigenous communities and provide ways for Canadians to express their views.

This commitment is welcome.

Canadians have been hearing a lot about EA lately, as heated debates continue over major resource projects and their effects on both the ecosystem and on Aboriginal communities.

Most people are at least passingly familiar with the epic review process for the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway project, for example. Yet while the profile of the EA process is growing, so is dissatisfaction with the process and confusion about what it is intended to achieve.

NOBLE EA is not intended as a forum for airing grievances about a particular resource industry such as the oil sands, or engaging in a broad-based debate on Aboriginal rights.

It is a process at the federal or provincial level, conducted either by the responsible government authority or a review board, intended to identify and evaluate the potential environmental and social impacts of a particular proposed development, and find ways to mitigate them.

What is becoming increasingly clear, however, is that the EA process is not currently serving the needs of Aboriginal communities

Trudeau’s commitment is to undertake, in full partnership and consultation with First Nations, Inuit, and the Métis Nation, a review of EA laws, policies and operational practices.

This review must address two critical issues.

First, Aboriginal communities are frequently consulted too late in the game, often when the project’s design and planning are already complete, and their concerns are not taken into consideration.

This is creating conflict and unnecessary delay. The Assembly of First Nations has noted that minimizing the role of First Nations in EA leads, “Not only to an adversarial environment, but one marked by increased litigation.”

Second, Aboriginal communities frequently lack the resources to analyze and respond to complex proposals and many are dealing with several re-

quests at once, resulting in inadequate engagement, participant fatigue, or both.

Trudeau also notes that resource-based projects can create jobs and spur investments and that decisions about project applications must serve the public’s interest. Businesses also frequently find that the EA process is prolonged and combative and in the end often does not forestall Aboriginal opposition.

How can environmental assessment work better for everyone? Governments and industry must invest resources in EA training programs to build educational and technical capacity in Aboriginal communities and participant funding programs must be complemented by longer-term industry investments in Aboriginal engagement post project approval.

EA legislation should require more front-end and culturally appropriate engagement on behalf of the

project proponent – at a point where decisions are being made about the intent to develop, and about the nature, rationale for and intended design of a project.

Meaningful engagement of Aboriginal communities is unlikely to threaten the efficiency of environmental assessment. However, poor engagement or lack of engagement will invariably cause delays and add costs to projects.

The stakes are high. Major resource developments are at risk, and so are the relationships between governments, industries and Aboriginal communities.

Invitation to join CNIB Peer Support Group: The Peer Support Group is a program dedicated to helping CNIB clients adjust to vision loss. Feelings of fear, anxiety, intimidation and anger are extremely common in adults who are diagnosed with vision loss. The goal of the group is to help transform these feelings into those of confidence and independence through education and group discussions. The program is facilitated by a volunteer who has gone through the process of adjusting to a life with vision loss. The group offers seniors a way to connect to others experiencing similar challenges. Participants receive empowering, practical and useful information about vision loss and how CNIB services can help, as well as suggestions from other participants on how to reduce the impact of vision loss on their daily lives. There is no cost to participate in the program which will meet once per month.

CITY BRIEFS FUNDRAISER HELD FOR LACOMBE FIRE VICTIMS Last Friday, a charity barbecue was held for the victims of two residential fires that occurred in Lacombe last month.

The barbecue was held in the parking lot west of Remax at 5265 45th St. All of the proceeds raised during the day will be disbursed to the four families affected by the fires.

Organizer Lori Hellofs said the group had around 400 people show up and buy hamburgers.

“We raised an additional $4,025 for the families so that brings it to a total of $6,024,” she said of the funds raised.

A trust fund account has been set up at Servus Credit Union in Lacombe. Donations can be made to ‘Lacombe Fire Victims October 2015.’

Hellofs said the trust fund account is still open for 90 days so donations are still greatly appreciated.

CITY TO REJOIN CENTRAL ALBERTA ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP At their regular meeting on Oct. 26th, council approved the City of Lacombe’s membership in the Central Alberta Economic Partnership (CAEP), effective Jan. 1st, to help further the City’s economic development goals.

“Council recognizes that partnerships and relationships are crucial to building strong and prosperous communities,” said Mayor Steve Christie. “We believe that re-establishing mem-

CAEP was formally organized in 1998 and Lacombe was a municipal member until 2012 when council opted to rescind its membership due to difficulties in tracking tangible benefits and results. Membership is paid on a per capita basis. Next year’s rates are $0.40 per resident, for a total of $5,091.20 annually.

“Now under new leadership, the organization has acquired a number of economic development tools that it’s making available to member municipalities,” said Community and Economic Development Manager Guy Lapointe. “This can help with expanding Lacombe’s commercial sector through business attraction and investment.”

OPEN HOUSE ON RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT IN LACOMBE The City of Lacombe, in partnership with Parkland Community Planning Services (PCPS), is updating the municipal Land Use Bylaw. The City is hosting an open house on residential development and issues, and wants to explore ideas for how Lacombe should build different types of residential units in the future.

Pony club members win big at national competition While most people enjoyed turkey this past Thanksgiving, four local young ladies were thinking of horses.

The Canadian Pony Club held their annual National Quiz Competition in Calgary on Oct. 9th to 11th. Teams from 13 regions across Canada and one American team convened in Calgary to test their knowledge of everything horsey - from horse riding equipment to skeletal and muscular make-up of the animal and games all related to horses of course.

The Alberta Central Region sent two qualified teams in two divisions. The C-level consisted of three Blindman Valley Pony Club members from Rimbey and area and one from the Haunted Lakes Pony Club in the Alix area.

Alida Granson and Meghan Penner studied hard over the past few months with their coaches Amanda Penner and Isabelle Forsstrom. Their efforts paid off with the team bringing home third place in their level in the national competition. Individually, Meghan placed fourth and Katrina placed ninth. This certainly helped their team effort.

City addresses snow clearing of sidewalks and paths At their regular meeting on Oct. 26th, Lacombe City council passed a resolution to approve, effective immediately, service level revisions to Snow Removal Policy 32 and 230 as amended to address snow clearing from City sidewalks and trails.

“Growth in Lacombe is accompanied with increased duties for snow clearing,” said Community Services Director Brenda Vaughan. “Recent increases include the addition of trails along Hwy. 2A, Henners Storm Pond, Burris Point and Maple Drive. The North West Recreation Area and MacKenzie Subdivision were also added asphalt trails in 2015. The Sheppard Heights trails are finished with asphalt millings, avoiding the need for snow clearing.”

Citizen feedback over the past year requested that the Cranna Lake trails be cleared by early Monday morning, ahead of foot traffic heading to schools. Weekend snow clearing ceased about four years ago due to insufficient resources. Parks staff will attempt, using their existing resources, to clear school foot traffic trails as early as possible on Monday mornings. Parks staff will also clear sidewalks abutting property that is the responsibility of the City of Lacombe.

“Parks staff will undertake snow clearing and ice control on sidewalks, hard asphalt and cement surfaced trails within the designated trail system,” said Parks and Facilities Manager Calvin Bennefield. “The service will be provided between Monday and Friday, excluding statutory holidays.”

Priority sequencing of snow clearing is now established as follows: downtown, school foot traffic walkways, all other

sidewalks, asphalt and sidewalk trails and fourthly outdoor skating rinks.

There are also service level changes for clearing snow from streets. In the past, operations staff have attempted to give more than 12 hours advanced notice to residents, but have occasionally given less in their efforts to quickly address snow clearing within the municipality.

Going forward, all snow clearing operations will be preceded by at least the man-

dated 12 hours of signed notice. New signage has also been ordered to increase the visibility of street maintenance warnings.

“In advance of the upcoming winter season, we will be reminding residents of the traffic bylaw provisions,” said Operations and Planning Director Matthew Goudy.

“Vehicles that impede snow clearing operations by violating the bylaw will be towed around the corner, at the owner’s expense, who will also be subject to a $60 fine as per

the ‘Fines Schedule’ of Bylaw 223.”

Bylaw enforcement will still attempt to contact the owner of the offending vehicle prior to taking any action, to give the resident a chance to avoid the fine and tow charge.

This measure is expected to significantly improve snow clearing operations in residential areas, and lower the number of equipment incidents.

Habitat for Humanity homeowner session to be held in Lacombe On Thursday, Nov. 19th, at 6:30 p.m.

Habitat for Humanity Red Deer Region Society will be hosting a family selection information session at St. Andrew’s United Church (5226 51 Ave.) in Lacombe.

This family selection information session is the first step in allocating four new homes to qualified families in Lacombe.

All interested families are invited to attend the information session on Nov. 19th, to learn more about the selection process, eligibility requirements and applying for a Habitat home. All applicants must attend an information session before being considered for a Habitat home.

Habitat for Humanity Red Deer is a notfor-profit organization that works towards creating sustainable affordable housing in the Central Alberta area. The organization will be building four units (two duplexes) in the MacKenzie Ranch subdivision of

Lacombe over this next year.

In June, the City of Lacombe entered into an agreement with Habitat for Humanity Red Deer for a $300,000 grant contribution from the City’s affordable housing project. The grant funds will cover for the costs of the land but more funds are still needed to construct the four homes.

All Lacombe residents interested in owning a Habitat home are encouraged to attend the session.

Eligibility for a Habitat for Humanity home ownership includes, but is not limited to: an annual gross family income of $37,234 to $51,272, Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant with at least three

years permanent residency in Canada, the current living situation is either unsafe, unhealthy or overcrowded, currently spending greater than 30% of gross family income on rent, willing and able to accept and repay a Habitat mortgage, willing to contribute 500 hours of volunteer work to Habitat for Humanity.

Priority for these homes will go to current residents of Lacombe.

Parks staff will undertake snow clearing and ice control on sidewalks and hard asphalt and cement surfaced trails within the designated trail system,” said Parks and Facilities Manager Calvin Bennefield. “The service will be provided between Monday and Friday, excluding statutory holidays.”

Citizen feedback over the past year requested that the Cranna Lake trails be cleared early Monday morning, ahead of foot traffic heading to schools. Weekend snow clearing ceased about four years ago due to insufficient resources. Parks staff will attempt, using existing resources, to clear school foot traffic trails as early as possible on Monday mornings.

There are also service level changes for clearing snow from streets. In the past, the City has attempted to give more than 12 hours advanced notice to residents, but has occasionally given less in its efforts to quickly address snow clearing issues. Going forward, all snow clearing operations will be preceded by at least the mandated 12 hours of signed notice. New signage has also been ordered to increase the visibility of ‘Street Maintenance’ warnings.

“In advance of the upcoming winter season, we will be reminding residents of the Traffic Bylaw provisions,” said Operations and Planning Director Matthew Goudy. “Vehicles that impede snow clearing operations by violating the bylaw will be towed around the corner, at the owner’s expense, who will also be subject to a $60 fine as per the ‘Fines Schedule’ of Bylaw 223.”

Enforcement officers will still attempt to contact the owners of offending vehicles prior to taking any action, to give residents a chance to avoid fine and tow charges. This measure is expected to significantly improve snow clearing operations in residential areas, and lower the number of equipment incidents.

STAR Catholic celebrates second annual STAR LIGHT Day Revealing Christ to teens has been the aim of STAR Catholic School’s STAR LIGHT Day for the past two years. LIGHT stands for learn, ignite, grow, help and tell. STAR LIGHT Day brings students from Grades 7 to 12 from around the division together to engage with a keynote speaker and not just reveal Christ, but to allow young people to strengthen or simply ignite a relationship with Jesus, organizers say.

“I find that most youth

are desperately seeking a relationship with Christ, even if they don’t realize that’s what they’re looking for,” said Katie Prejean, this year’s keynote speaker at STAR LIGHT Day, on Oct. 21st in Leduc.

“In a world of 140 character thoughts and 10 second videos that disappear, it’s important for teens and young adults to have opportunities to authentically encounter the Lord. In my travels, I’ve found that most teens want this encounter and

are thrilled to be given the chance to meet him and want to make the daily commitment to follow him and live for him. But, and here’s the sad part: most of those same teens that want that relationship have no idea where to start. They’ve rarely been given practical tips on how to build the relationship or continue to strengthen the relationship, and if the tips were given, then they often times struggle to follow through because they might be surrounded by a community that isn’t supportive.”

Prejean, a youth director at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church and theology teacher at St. Louis Catholic High School in Lake Charles, Louisiana said there are three things teens need to focus on in strengthening their relationship with Christ.

“Staying connected through prayer, sacrificing joyfully for the good of others, and trusting the will of God above all else. Just like we wouldn’t think to leave on a long trip without our cell phone charger, so too must we think to charge up our soul through daily prayer. It can be simple: a few minutes in the morning, a few minutes before you go to bed at night.

Prayer is simply communicating with the Father, talking to Him as simply as you would your best friend or parent,” she said.

“Sacrificing joyfully sounds like an oxymoron - those are two words we don’t usually see put together. The very word ‘sac-

rifice’ implies some sort of pain or suffering. But, and this is key - when we sacrifice and give of our very selves to others, we are united to Jesus Christ in an incredibly intimate way. Lastly, I think if we are trusting of God’s will more than we rely on our own, then we will find that our relationship with the Lord is strengthened.”

Prejean’s message is brought to students with excitement and joy that literally forces the teens out of their seats and participating and sharing with each other.

Clare Ganton, STAR Catholic’s director of Faith Life and Religious Education said it’s important for students to hear a message as enthusiastic as Prejean’s.

“We share the teachings of the Gospel in our Religion classes and throughout our schools, and parents can share the same message at home, but often it has to come from another voice to really impact some students,” she said. “That’s the great thing about STAR LIGHT Day, which we have been able to host for the past two years. It provides teens with that other voice, one that is excited about Jesus and not just living their faith, but can really engage the students at their level.”

STAR LIGHT Day was started as part of STAR Catholic’s board of trustees’ commitment to evangelization in the school division, and began last year with storyteller Jesse Manibusan.

Highlights from Lacombe County council 2016 Graded Aggregate Seal Coat tender Council was advised that the County applies graded aggregate seal coat (chip seal) to roads approximately eight years after they are paved. Chip seal extends the life of a paved road. It provides better winter traction and better visibility for drivers at night.

This preventative maintenance ensures a high level of service to County ratepayers by reducing lifecycle costs of the paved road and providing better driving surfaces.

By resolution of council, the County commissioner was authorized to tender and award the 2016 Graded Aggregate Seal Coat tender.

2016 Capital equipment replacement purchases Council was presented with a list of the proposed 2016 capital equipment replacement purchases which recommends the replacement of five graders, one buggy, one excavator, a service truck, 815 packer, 563 packer, six trailers, two and half tons, a steamer and a small packer.

Council was advised that further to the capital equipment replacement purchases, the purchase of some new capital equipment will be included in the 2016 operational budget. Council reviewed the proposed purchases, their cost, usage and the rationale for acquiring the equipment. Approval of these items to be funded from the operational budget will be considered by council during the 2016 budget deliberations.

Bridge replacement schedule Council was presented with an overview of the bridge construction projects and designs completed in 2015. The 2016 proposed replacement schedule and proposed engineering and design projects were also presented.

By resolution, council accepted the proposed five-year Bridge Replacement Schedule and authorized the County commissioner to tender and award the capital bridge projects for 2016.

Trans Canada Trail Council was informed that the Trans Canada Trail is the longest trail network in the world and the goal is to have the trail network completed by 2017. The section of trail from the City of Lacombe to Ponoka County is considered part of the Trans Canada Trail and this is the only section Lacombe County has left to construct.

The following resolution received council approval: that council endorse the plan to build a trail from Lacombe to Ponoka County, that council authorize the County commissioner to apply for grants and budget for the building to the trail in the 2016 budget and that the County commissioner be authorized to investigate alternative funding to provide for paving of the trail in 2017.

Lacombe County council re-elects reeve and deputy reeve for 2016 Lacombe County council re-elected Division 4 Councillor Paula Law as Reeve at the annual organizational meeting held on Oct. 28th.

In fact, sometimes even the experts agree it is better to save your money and do the simplest choice.

For almost 10 years a few specialists have been trying to interfere with the advertising of orthodontics by general dentists. There is no state or province in North America that has prevented general dentists from providing braces, but that doesn’t stop certain people from trying. To be fair, there ARE some situations where you should probably ONLY see a specialist. If you need jaw surgery to have an ideal result, and accept the risks of doing this treatment you actually need to see two or three dental specialists plus your general dentist to complete your treatment. If you are especially particular and want to be as close to textbook perfect, then not only should you see a specialist, you should be sure you see a very fussy specialist. Not all specialists are equal.

SAD TRUTH Even specialists are not able to guarantee straight teeth will make you or your child a Hollywood star.

Another reality is while they used to think they could ‘grow lower jaws’ with orthodontic appliances the facts seem to suggest otherwise. Many young teens treated with appliances and Herbst braces simply grew out of their bad bite – and others who were ‘fixed’ were actually only posturing their jaw forward and not really improved. The good news is even if the bones of the jaws are a mismatch- typically the lower being too small to match the upper, it is not a fatal condition. Many people live to be over ninety years old with this kind of bite, but if you are concerned about the retruded profile or other effects, as an adult you may choose jaw repositioning surgery…but the sad truth is no dentist, and not even specialists can actually claim to grow a mandible more than it is programed to do by genetics. It is sometimes better to do little or nothing for a teenager when it is clear they will want jaw surgery later anyway. It is simply not wise to keep braces on for extended periods of time, waiting for the person to stop growing. As a parent you may want to do the best for your child but sometimes that means waiting.

Dental professionals tell you this, but if you don’t really understand you may be wasting your money.

Who wants to be told their child may be better off waiting and choosing jaw surgery when he/she is an adult?

Sometimes it is better to do less and here’s an example: A child was being teased about her ‘buck teeth’ which were spaced out and sticking out of her mouth even when her lips were closed. She clearly needed something done, but it was also obvious she was going to need jaw re-positioning at a much older age to improve her profile. If you watch Dr. Pol the veterinarian on television, you’ll notice his wife has a very small lower jaw. People often look better when their jaws match, but as mentioned, this cannot always be corrected as a teen. What did Dr. Zuk recommend? He suggested not doing what his friend the orthodontist recommended, and instead suggested a very inexpensive, limited orthodontic treatment. With $1999 braces the young girl’s smile would be little better and she wouldn’t be as selfconscious. Spending $7000 would not have corrected the true skeletal problem anyway.

Other situations where ‘$1999 & up braces’ may help teens & adults include mild to moderate crowding, twisting or spacing of the upper teeth- especially when you can’t afford a specialist for comprehensive or ‘full treatment’. Limited treatment often just focuses on making your smile look better and not correcting all the things you could if your budget was higher.

Cow Patti Theatre launches season with comedy Ethan Claymore

BY SARAH MAETCHE LACOMBE EXPRESS There’s more to the holiday season than singing carols, drinking hot chocolate and decorating the Christmas tree.

In Cow Patti Theatre’s latest production Ethan Claymore, kicking off the 19th season, we learn that miracles still do happen, even in the simple life of a Central Alberta farmer. We will get to see a true reflection of life in the ’70s and of course, in true Cow Patti fashion, enjoy plenty of laughs as well.

Ethan Claymore, premiering at the Lacombe Golf and Country Club, will run until mid December. The production features a cast of eight and is penned by Canadian playwright Norm Foster.

Cow Patti’s Artistic Producing Director AnnaMarie Lea said usually for the first show of the season, the company produces a farce, which is not the essence of Ethan Claymore.

“No matter what farce you do, they all kind of work the same way, and I thought it was time to give our audience a bit of a toss up,” she said.

Lea was led towards selecting Foster’s Ethan Claymore last season, after the renewed suggestion from a former actor and the search for a holiday-themed play.

“I wanted to stay with comedy because I really truly believe we all need to be able to laugh,” she said. “But in this play, because it’s written by Norm Foster, there is some wit in it. There is some heart.”

Ethan Claymore deals with the very heart of the holiday season - family, friendship, love and yes, miracles. Lea said the miracles are, “Very heartwarming,” and at times, unrealistic, but that’s the charm of the production.

Essentially, Ethan Claymore tells the tale of a struggling egg farmer who has given up looking for love and laughter just four days before Christmas. Much to his surprise, Ethan is visited by the spirit, or ‘shadow being’ of his late brother, and along with the assistance of a meddlesome neighbour and another, will bring back the zest in his life.

Set in the ’70s, the play flashed back to when Ethan and his brother were children in the ’40s.

“It’s really important to get the audience there with us,” said Lea. In order to seamlessly cross between the two decades, Lea has paid close attention to the details on the set right down to the soundtrack. From vintage glasses and props sourced directly from a shop in

Lacombe and an authentic ’70s era fridge, the community has contributed pieces to assist in Lea’s vision.

Two Lacombe Composite High School art students, Sofia Capettini and Thomas Waddell, have also been commissioned to create two paintings that are critical to the plot of the play.

Lea added this production is the professional debut of four young actors from the Lacombe area - a first for the theatre company.

“Another interesting aspect to this play is because it flashes back, I’ve had to hire some very young actors for this play,” she said.

Red Deer College student and former theatre camp attendee Ryan Scheltus will be playing the role of young Martin.

Twelve-year-old Levi Derowin, Tristan Hanrahan and 1o-year old Corbin Pearson will be sharing the role of young Ethan.

The production also features Brian Young playing the lead Ethan Claymore, Edward Chaplin as Douglas McClaren, Susan Greenfield as Teresa Pike and new to the Cow Patti stage, Allan Cooke as Ethan’s brother Martin.

Lea said the main mandate of Cow Patti Theatre is to make people laugh.

“This season I’m just trying to give people a really good laugh,” she said. “I want everyone to walk out of here feeling really good, like life is good.”

Ethan Claymore runs from Nov. 19th to Saturday, Dec. 19th at the Lacombe Golf and Country Club. Performances are on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and

Saturday evenings. Doors open at 6 p.m. with dinner served at 6:45 p.m. Saturday and Sunday afternoons are brunch shows.

The theatre is also hosting six benefit shows for various local community groups including Kasota East Camp, the Caroline Seniors’ Drop In Centre, Medical Mercy Canada, All the Jazz Dance Studio, A Better World Canada, The Lacombe Masons and the Lacombe Performing Arts Centre Foundation. Martin Luther King had a great dream: what’s mine?

To dream of what might be is a good thing. Martin Luther King had a great dream but only some of his dream has been realized.

The U.S. now has a black president, Jackie Robinson became a great baseball star and a friend of mine became professor of medicine at The Harvard Medical School. So, this week marks the 40th year I’ve written this column and I too have a dream.

But it’s far from reality.

For 40 years I’ve hoped that by passing along medical information I’ve helped people live a healthier lifestyle and longer life. I believe one of

Like King, I’ve encountered major opposition.

But I’m convinced that several thousand milligrams (mg) of Vitamin C and lysine has kept me

alive following a severe heart attack 17 years ago.

Cardiologists thought at that time, and still do, that I was a damn fool to deny cholesterol-lowering drugs (CLDs).

Initially, I worried they might be right, as I had no definite proof that Vitamin C would work. So why take such a gamble? Primarily my decision was due to my interview of Dr. Linus Pauling, Nobel Prize winner. He warned that, due to a genetic mutation, humans, unlike animals, lost the ability to manufacture Vitamin C. Pauling said we consumed enough Vitamin C, one sixth of an orange, to prevent scurvy, but not enough to prevent heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases. He knew that Vitamin C is needed in quantity to manufacture collagen, the glue that holds cells together.

The lack of large amounts sets the stage for atherosclerosis. At the time I was

also seeing patients on CLDs complaining of several side-effects. And I believed that interfering with cholesterol metabolism was a dangerous decision.

Besides, pharmaceutical companies were making billions of dollars promoting CLDs and I believe they had seduced cardiologists with questionable science. Some researchers agree with me. Since that time Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, has reported his dramatic photos to show that high doses of C and lysine prevent and reverse hardening of arteries. His research convinced me that I made the right decision.

Besides, C is a natural remedy that is safe, less expensive and effective.

Will the medical establishment ever look at this research? Highly unlikely.

During the past three years I’ve tried to get medical journals, university health publications and Deans of major medical schools to

publish this information without success. Yet, no cardiologist has ever explained why this research is wrong.

So I continue to believe that history will prove that the use of CLDs is an unethical and dangerous medical experiment conducted by Big Pharma and the medical profession on millions of unsuspecting people. And that ignoring new research will result in the needless death of untold numbers of people. But why should I be right and all cardiologists wrong? My answer is, don’t just believe me.

Rather, research the internet and look for complications of CLDs. This shows increased risk of emotional problems, amnesia, cataracts, muscle pain, liver and kidney troubles. But what should get everyone’s attention, particularly cardiologists, is that those on CLDs have a 25 to 50% risk of Type 2 diabetes. And patients

with diabetes have a 50% chance of dying of heart attack.

So, in effect, CLDs are causing the very disease they’re supposed to prevent! I know of no contraindication that prevents high doses of Vitamin C (4,000 – 6,000 mg and lysine (3,000 -4,000 milligrams) along with CLDs. These high doses in powder or capsules are available in Health Food Stores.

But remember, I am not your doctor who must make such medical decisions for you.

So, like Martin Luther King I too can dream that good sense will eventually prevail. But so far the medical establishment maintains a closed mind on this research. I would like to thank the many readers who have said they have benefited from the column over the last 40 years.

Chestnuts: low in fat, high in fiber I can hardly believe that it was only 10 years ago that I first tried roasted chestnuts. It was on a cold winter afternoon while strolling past all of the decorative lights and stores on Robson Street in Vancouver, B.C. We came across a street vendor selling these heated little goodies and decided to give them a try.

They were incredible. A comforting buttery nut with a flavour uniquely their own, still encased in their shell but scored to ease the task of peeling. I couldn’t have found anything better at the time. Grasping a warm paper sack of roasted chestnuts while the crisp winter air surrounded us was reminiscent of a classic Christmas story.

As a child, I always came across chestnuts scattered on the ground amidst the fallen autumn leaves and never thought twice about them. Now I have a completely different outlook. I purchase chestnuts fresh from the local supermarket when they’re in season, on a regular basis.

When selecting them, choose ones that feel heavy and dense for their size and have a shiny outer brown shell that does not collapse when pushed upon.

They will keep at room temperature in a cool dark area for about a week and for approximately one month in the refrigerator in a plastic bag. Alternatively, they can also be frozen for up to six months.

Purchasing them from a reputable supplier is recommended if you are unfamiliar with chestnuts as there is a wild variety named ‘horse chestnuts’ that are inedible.

Preparing them for roasting is a bit tedious but well worth the effort.

DEZ on Cooking While your oven is preheating to 425 degrees, score the brown shell with a sharp knife. Place the flat side of the chestnut down on a cutting board and cut an ‘x’ shape carefully on the rounded side facing upwards. I find that a fine-toothed serrated knife works best. Keeping the shell on while cooking is important for holding in their warmth upon serving.

Seal them with a few tablespoons of water in aluminum foil and roast for approximately 50 minutes.

Be careful of the escaping hot steam when unwrapping them and serve immediately. Alternatively, place approximately eight of the scored chestnuts in a bowl and microwave for approximately one to one and a half minutes.

The shelling process afterwards is not only made easier by cooking them, but also adds to the nostalgic amusement of eating this wonderful treat.

Chestnuts are not similar to others in the nut family, as they are more perishable and their fat content is significantly less.

With only two or three grams of fat per 100g, chestnuts weigh in far less than other nuts that may contain upwards of 30 to 70 grams of fat per 100g.

Chestnuts also have approximately one-third of the calories of other nuts and are a much greater source of dietary fiber. One of the downsides

to chestnuts is that their starchier content contributes to a much higher carbohydrate count compared to other nuts.

The chestnut tree is actually related to the oak tree and can live to be up to 500 years. They usually measure approximately 50 ft. in height but can grow to be over 100 ft. tall.

Chestnut wood, like oak, is much sought after for furniture building for its fine grains and hard composition.

Make this wonderfully historic treat part of your holiday season this year, and you may catch yourself humming, “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…”

Dear Chef Dez: I see that the local grocery store is selling fresh chestnuts again in the produce section. What could I do with these if I were to buy some?

Chestnut puree is also often used in the making of many types of different desserts. Research the Internet or your local library for some fantastic ideas.

SPORTS Raiders headed to Bantam Football Association final

BY ZACHARY CORMIER LACOMBE EXPRESS The Lacombe Bantam Raiders are headed to the Central Alberta Bantam Football Association Tier III final.

The Raiders advanced to the championship game after defeating the Drumheller Titans 33-15 during semi-final action at ME Global Athletic Park in Lacombe last Friday.

“We played to the whistle,” said Head Coach Fred Knip after the game.

The Raiders set the pace early on, scoring a quick passing touchdown on their opening drive to jump out to an 8-0 lead, which they didn’t give up for the rest of the game.

Lacombe would add to that lead three minutes later when quarterback Richard Janz dropped back and passed over the top of the Drumheller defense and connected with wide receiver Simon Gray.

Gray then capped the drive off by kicking his own convert to give his team a 16point lead in the first quarter.

The wide receiver had a great first half as he had one touchdown but also made a couple of key catches early in the game, including one beautiful diving first down grab.

But, with just three minutes left in the first, Drumheller jumped right back into the game when they found a seam in the defense and returned a punt 75 yards to the house, cutting the host’s lead in half going into the second quarter.

That’s when Lacombe’s running game took over.

“That was specific. We have a strong pass game as well but we knew that other teams were here scouting so we knew that we could run on these guys so we figured ‘let’s do that’,” Knip noted, adding that the team had observed in the film that Drumheller’s formation lent itself to the Raiders’ running backs, who chipped away at the opposing defense, picking up first down after first down for the home team.

He added that when the team was creating their game plan, they noticed that Drumheller’s defense tended to cue on one of their strongest receivers, Simon Gray, and tended to double team him.

This opened up a lot more space for their running backs to gain yardage.

“We have some strong runners. Not as strong as we used to, we have some guys that have gone down with injuries.”

The second quarter kicked off without much fanfare. Lacombe’s defense was solid all night, holding Drumheller to just

This allowed the offense to go to work.

They ran the ball throughout the second quarter, only passing on second or third downs and never going for a huge touchdown pass.

Instead they kept the ball on the ground and found holes in Drumheller’s defense to keep moving the chains up the field.

Then, with just two minutes left in the half, Janz took a snap on the one-yardline and took it in himself for his first of two rushing touchdowns on the day.

Janz, it’s worth noting, managed to run the ball to the end zone three times on long-yardage runs, but all three times the touchdown was called back due to penalties in the back field.

“Hard work. We work hard. I’m a big believer in cardiovascular conditioning. If a kid is in shape, he’ll be able to maintain and sustain a game for the full hour,” Knip said.

The Raiders also took advantage of the opportunities that were given to them.

Drumheller ended up taking a number of penalties that resulted in either a loss of yards for their offence or an automatic first down for Lacombe.

Lacombe’s solid defense carried them through the last two minutes of the first half to preserve the home team’s 25-8 lead going into the break.

The third quarter started out much the same, as Janz took a snap on the Drumheller 40-yard-line and proceeded to go for a run all the way to the house for the score.

That was all the scoring that the Raiders would need. Drumheller added one more touchdown on a 100-yard run by Marshal Johnson, but it wouldn’t be enough.

The Raiders recovered the ensuing onside kick, essentially sealing the deal on an excellent game. Final score: Raiders 33 - Titans 16.

still have lots of energy left; lots of fire down in the engine,” Knip commented.

With the win, Lacombe advances to the final when they will play host to the Stettler Cougars (3-3) to compete for that coveted provincial berth. Lacombe doubled up on the Cougars 48-24 in the only meeting between the two clubs this season.

Knip, though, said the team is taking nothing for granted.

“I’ve said it before that success is the impediment of progress,” he said, adding that the team can’t stop playing their game just because they won the last one.

“You think ‘oh we’ve made it’ and then we stop doing what we used to do that got us to where we are. So we’re still working hard and we’re still doing a lot of running.”

The Central Alberta Selects start season off strong

BY ZACHARY CORMIER LACOMBE EXPRESS The Central Alberta Selects Bantam AA hockey team are off to an excellent start to the season.

The Selects are currently sitting in first place in the North division of the South Central Alberta Hockey League with a 6-1-1 record.

“We’ve been really good so far,” said Head Coach Matt Williams during a phone interview.

The Selects kicked off the season with a five-game winning streak before being handed their first loss - a 3-2 heart breaker in Lethbridge that saw Central Alberta jump out to an early lead before the Hurricanes surged back to score three unanswered goals. The Selects managed to add a powerplay marker early in the third

but just couldn’t quite pull even.

Central Alberta refused to be rattled, though.

They’ve scored 44 goals while allowing just 25 in the past eight games. That gives them the third best goal differential in the entire league at plus-19.

“Everyone’s been buying into what we’re trying to do and that’s create really good athletes,” Williams noted.

Williams said the Selects have been good so far at outworking their opposition.

“They bring their work ethic every single day.

They show up to practice and they work hard. They show up to games and they outwork other teams.

Yes we have talent and yes we have skill but we definitely out work every team we face,” he said.

The Selects have five players that are contributing on a pointper-game basis, and two more that have notched at least five points so far.

“We have a never give up; never surrender atmosphere there and the boys absolutely have been driving,” Williams commented.

The Selects had a bit of a rocky start to the season

when they had to hire a brand new coaching staff right off the hop.

“The coaching staff, we’re learning how to get the most out of each kid. Everyone was kind of thrown in at the last minute for the coaching staff.

“It’s quite a start considering that we weren’t involved throughout the whole tryout process.”

Even with the team’s success, though, Williams stressed there is still always room for improvement.

“It’s a young year and there’s room for improvement everywhere. The guys are still learning the systems and they’re still learning what we expect from them as a coaching staff,” he said.

Williams noted the team has also shown signs that they could get even better

as the season goes on.

“The guys have really been listening and wanting to learn as much as they can from us. That’s been really good this year.

There’s definitely room for improvement everywhere, though. You never stop learning and that’s something that they’re going to continue to do throughout the year.”

The team has also benefited from solid goaltending. Both of their goalies have posted winning records so far this season.

Dalton Beck has posted 108 saves throughout the six games that he has played so far this year to post a .910 save percentage and a 2.48 goals against average while Peyton Lobe has won all four games that he has started with a .850 save percentage.

The Selects have had

some excellent contributions on offence as well.

One of their players, Brett Meerman, is currently tied for second in the league scoring race with 11 goals and five assists for a total of 16 points in eight games.

Another one of their players, Brady McKinlay, is tied for fourth with four goals and nine assists for 13 points.

“I think the highlight for our team is definitely seeing them grow so far this year. I mean from the start of the year until now you just see a completely different team. Everyone’s getting better. From top to bottom they’ve all improved,” Williams noted.
