Blagborne, Bruce

Bruce Blagborne was a sergeant in training at Officer’s Cadet Training Unit, Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He graduated as a lieutenant in the Parachute Branch.

Campbell, Vi

Vi Campbell served with the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force in England from 1941 to 1945.

Carter, Robert P.

Bargholz, Douglas

Douglas Joseph Bargholz enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force July 19, 1941 in Calgary.

He served in Britain as an aero engine mechanic, Class A, with the ground crew of the 497 Canadian (Demon) Squadron of the Coastal and later Bomber Command.

Chamberlain, Guy

Guy Chamberlain, a drivermechanic with the Third Division Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, landed on Juno Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944.

Coates, Mary

Mary Coates served in the British Army with the Signal Corps. She was in the Auxiliary Territorial Service from 1943 to 1945.

Lt.-Col. Robert P. Carter is a graduate of Royal Military College in Kingston, Ont. He is an F-18 pilot who flew in Kosovo and Bosnia campaigns.

He served four tours of duty in Afghanistan. This last tour was as chief of staff for Canadian forces in Kabul. Carter served more than 27 years in Canada’s Air Force.

Dunsdon, Steve

Steve Dunsdon served in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corp from 1942 to 1945, in England, France, Belgium and Germany. He landed in France soon after D-Day. The mandate of the Service Corp was to provide support for other branches of the military.

Veterans and their spouses are free, but must pick up their tickets in advance.

After the Parade all Legion Members, Veterans and their spouses, Ladies Auxiliary and Summerland Pipe Band on parade are invited to the Legion.

All members of Cadets, the Scouting movement, and SSS Band are invited to the Legion for refreshments and a luncheon.

Donations for the Food Bank Christmas Hampers will kindly be accepted at the Legion up until Dec. 15th.

Summerland Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is again soliciting donations and public support for its Annual Poppy Drive and Remembrance Day Ceremonies.

The public is encouraged to attend the ceremonies at the Cenotaph.

Charlie, William

William Charlie served in Britain, the central Mediterranean and Europe during World War II. He was discharged Feb. 22, 1946.

Gillingham, Charles V.

Charles V. Gillingham enlisted in the Canadian army in 1943. He was killed in action in France in 1944 at the age of 24.

Gillingham, Jack

Jack Gillingham served with the corvette HMCS Cobourg on convoy duty from Newfoundland to Londonderry, Ireland during World War II.

Quarton, Harry Dorn, Roland

Roland Hugo Dorn joined the 22 Battery of the 13th Field Regiment Artillery at the age of 17 in 1940. He saw service in France, Belgium and Netherlands. He married war bride Enid Florence Buckle in April of 1944. They settled in Yorkton, Sask. after the war.

Jarvis, Terrance

Terrance Jarvis was an RCAF Spitfire pilot in World War II. He was killed in action on July 31, 1944 over the Domfret area of France.

Richard McCombe was in the Canadian Technical Training Corps in 1945.

Phillips, Doiran

Doiran Phillips was a private in G (intelligence) in the Salisbury Plain District, Bulford, Salisbury, England from 1943 to 1944.

Lt.-Col. Harry Quarton joined the South Alberta Regiment in June, 1940, when he was 17. He landed on Juno Beach as part of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division and participated in the Battle of the Falaise Gap. In 1946, he enlisted with the 19th Alberta Dragoons and was commissioned as an officer in 1952. He retired in 1986.

In recent years, he and other veterans have returned to various European sites.

The cenotaph in Memorial Park lists the Summerland soldiers who died in World War I and World War II. Not all of the families of Summerland’s fallen soldiers wished to have their loved ones identified on the cenotaph.

Kilburn, Jerry Hughes, A. Hilton

A. Hilton Hughes served with the 12th Manitoba Dragoons.

Jerry Kilburn served with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a pilot from 1941 to 1944. He served in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Strachan, Hugh

Pugh, Iory

lorwerth Llyllwlyn Pugh served with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse Royal Canadians from 1942 to 1946.

Hugh Strachan was born in Humber Bay (now Mississauga, Ont.) on Dec. 15, 1917. He served in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps (also known as the Tank Corps) from 1942 to 1946.

Topham, Charles

Charles Topham served with the B.C. Dragoons during World War II.

Parker, Lawrence

Lawrence (Larry) Parker enlisted Sept. 20, 1940 and was part of the Edmonton Fusiliers. He served in the United Kingdom, central Mediterranean and Europe. He was discharged Dec. 6, 1945. He lived in Summerland from 1989 until his death in 2003.

Smith, Phillip

Smith, Gordon W.

Gordon W. Smith served with R.A.F. Squadron 608 as a flight mechanic in North Africa and Sicily from 1941 to 1946.

Phillip M. Smith, Pte. K50975, joined the Canadian army in April, 1943 and was discharged in February, 1946. He was a volunteer in chemical warfare experiments in Suffield, Alberta in July, 1943.

Turnbull, Don

Don Turnbull was in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1940 to 1944. He became a pilot and then trained others to fly. He lived in Summerland from 1952 until his death in 2004.

Welsh, Maurice F.

Maurice F. Welsh joined the Reserve Officer Training Corps in 1941 as a 2nd Lieutenant while completing his Ph.D. at U. of Toronto in Plant Pathology. On graduation in 1942, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant, Royal Canadian Signals Corp., and shipped to England. He served with Signals Corps attached to 1st Canadian Infantry Division in the Italian campaign. From Sicily and then throughout mainland Italy he served as a Signals Officer, establishing communications networks. He was demobilized in 1946 after further service in England.

Waite, Deborah

Deborah (Harris) Waite, daughter of Doug and Lenore Harris, served with the RCAF from 1975 to 1982.

White, E. Sheila

Sheila White served with the Royal Canadian Air Force WD from 1943 to 1945. She trained as a wireless operator in Montreal and was posted to the Cape Breton RCAF Station.

Young, Zoe Young, Edward

Edward Young, a sergeant gunner, served in World War II. He was missing in action in 1942.

He is buried in the Netherlands.

Zoe Young (nee Shaw) served in the British army with the Auxiliary Territorial Services Claims Commission from 1942 to 1945.

She married Douglas Young in England in July, 1945.

Membership is open to all Canadian citizens and Commonwealth subjects. You do not have to be a Veteran or a relative of a Veteran. Forms are available at the branch and yearly dues are only $50.

While the number one priority of the Royal Canadian Legion is their veterans, they also donate to local community groups and organizations. Summerland Legion Branch 22 is proud to have donated over $15,000!

If you need assistance in any way contact our Service Officer. If you are a Veteran or a member of Branch 22, you may be eligible for medical aids and government assistance.
