With its decades long, and very successful, experience in bringing refugee families to Creston, Linda Price doesn’t want to see the efforts die. But more, and younger, volunteers are needed to sustain the Creston Refugee Committee, she said.

Price isn’t about to walk away from the organization and is willing to serve as chair for another year if it means bringing in another family.

“I will continue if we get some more help,” she said.

In fact, Price and her small team have already identified another Karin (an ethnic Burmese group) family from Burma, having success-

“Our current family is moving to Toronto for more work opportunities, and one will attend university,” she said. “He has said he would love to return to Creston after he completes his studies if he could find suitable work.”

“I would be really excited if a Karin family is available when we are ready,” she said. “They are very good and adaptable people.”

Creston Fire Rescue attended a vehicle fire on 15th Avenue North around 11:10 a.m. on Friday. The owner of the GMC pulled over because “he could smell something burning,” said Chief Mike Moore. The blaze was put out by fire crews, which were stretched thin, as they responded to the fire, a medical call and the report of a gas leak at the Creston Education Centre simultaneously.

Kapoor leaping to big screen with Bad Mother

Since Sarah Kapoor graduated from Prince Charles Secondary School in 1993 she has put together an impressive resume of experiences: Undergraduate and master’s degrees from Carleton University.

Ten years making films and documentaries for CBC. Wife and mother of two children, now two and seven. A successful production company with her friend and business partner, DavidJames Hernandes.

Now, on Nov. 7 she takes another giant leap. A feature film that she wrote and stars in will hit the big screen at the Hamilton Film Festival. The Bad Mother, she promises, will have its day in Creston.

The Bad Mother isn’t autobiographical, she said on Friday, but the story of a mother’s struggles reflect some of her own experiences. She walked away from a successful career at CBC and an offer to work on the National when she had her first child seven years ago. “When I was pregnant I had a good friend (Hernandes) say ‘Come work with me.’ � They started their own production company.

Kapoor credits her business relationship with Hernandes with helping her live out dreams while paying the bills and striving to provide a home with her husband, John, and two children. “We are very different but with so many complementary skills that actually we are able to have a successful production company,� she said. “We have lots of fantastic clients — almost every level of government. We make public service announcements and commercials, largely aligned with progressive causes. We don’t do things we don’t believe in.�

Her interest in film was fueled as a student at Carleton.

She made some documentaries, “on my own, which caught the eye of the CBC, and then I got a great internship there.� For a decade she worked on a string of projects and programs. The offer of a position on the National seemed to be what she had been working toward since high school, but it would have meant long hours and lots of travel, not exactly compatible with motherhood. She chose the balance that working with Hernandez promised.

“We always had making films and documentaries as part of our business plan,� Kapoor said. “After five years of working together, in November 2013 we finally had enough resources to say we’re going to barf out a screenplay each and we’re going to pick one to go forward with. “David came here to Creston and we locked ourselves up in the Magnusson and we wrote.

I didn’t write the script thinking that myself or my family would be in it. Not at all. None

David wrote a science fiction movie, which we will probably make at some point. I wrote what I knew, which was the story of a woman having to choose between career and family.�

Six months later, with what she describes as “a really good draft� of her script, she headed for Los Angeles to take a course designed to teach directors how to act “in

Even after the intense threeweek shoot in Hamilton, The Bad Mother still didn’t have an actor to play Tara Dubay’s mom. Enter Sarah’s mom, Sahdna. “My mother could not say a single line from the script that I had written, so we said, ‘Mom, you get the gist of it. Say whatever you want.’ There were times

when the crew was slayed. We had to stop rolling because she was just so naturally, uh, offensive! In that motherly way! My mom is a superstar in this film.

Tara Dubay’s mom, is not intended to be Sarah Kapoor’s mom, she insists. “My mom is both sweeter and more terrifying in real life,� she laughs. “This character is a caricature.�

Still with scenes left to shoot and strapped for cash, the partners embarked on a successful Kickstarter campaign, raising funds online from donors. “We had self-financed it all to that point. We had put everything we had into it.

Then this great miracle happened. There’s a character who plays Tara Dubay’s ex-boyfriend and I got this idea that it should be David Avocado Wolfe.

Wolfe, who has a huge Internet following, has been described as “the rock star and Indiana Jones of the superfoods and longevity universe.� “It was a major coup. I just wrote him a letter. He read the script. He agreed to it.

He’s funny. He doesn’t intend to be, but he is just funny.�

Halloween night a quiet one for Creston RCMP

Staff Sgt. Darryl Hammond said he was impressed with his first Halloween since moving to Creston.

“It was very quiet and there were very few problems despite the number of people out on the streets,” Hammond said on Monday. “It’s great that young people can have fun without causing problems for others.”

Police Beat Creston RCMP responded to a total of 52 calls for service from Oct. 26-Nov. 1, Hammond said.

October 26 •A business in the 1600 block of Highway 3A reported getting a request from a “customer” that would vastly overpay for services with a cheque, asking that the bulk of the overpayment be paid out in cash to an individual. The business did not fall for the scam.

•A gun was found in a recently vacated residence in the 4900 block of Highway 3A. •A female, who police believe to be mentally ill, made threats in Erickson.

•When police checked on a vehicle reported to be suspicious in the 1500 block of Cook Street they found the driver was waiting for someone to deliver money so he could purchase gas.

•A person who attempted to open the door of a residence in the 1100 block of Erickson Road was gone when police arrived.

October 27 •Police were called about an ongoing neighbours’ dispute involving harassing messages in the Lister area.

•A two-car collision on Canyon-Lister Road at 12th Street resulted in a minor injury to a vehicle occupant.

•A dispute over scooter parts led to a theft complaint from the 300 block of 16th Avenue North.

•A suspicious male in a business on 10th Avenue North was gone when police arrived on the scene.

•A caller reported that she heard a thud while talking on the telephone and asked police to check on the well-being of the person she was talking to. The female in question was fine.

•Police received two reports about an intoxicated male in the 16th Avenue North area. He was located and arrested, then held in police cells until sober.

•Police are investigating an assault in the Kitchener area.

October 29 •A vehicle collided with a bear in the 4000 block of Highway 3.

•A vehicle passed a stopped school bus on Highway 3/95.

•A Yahk male reported to be missing was found to be out hunting.

•Creston RCMP assisted Lethbridge police with an investigation.

•Mischief to a well was discovered on Stace Road when the owners found plastic bags had been dropped down the hole.

October 30 •An unwanted guest in the form of an intoxicated male was reported in the 400 block of 16th Avenue North.

•No injuries resulted from a vehicle fire on 15th Avenue North.

•A Lakeview-Arrow Creek Road resident reported that someone was putting garbage into his bin.

•A vehicle went out of control and into the ditch near the junction of Highways 3 and 3A. October 31 •A complaint about a vehicle passing unsafely on Highway 3/95 was received.

•A possibly impaired driver was reported in a parking lot in the 1000 block of Northwest Boulevard.

•A male found lying in the alley near 10th Avenue North was found to be extremely intoxicated and transported to hospital.

•Two intoxicated males were found on 15th Avenue North. One was given a ticket for having open liquor and they were sent home.

•Charges are pending against a male following a domestic incident in the 1500 block of Vancouver Street. The same male was reported the next day to have damaged a picnic table.

November 1 •When police responded to a report of a break and entry in a Canyon Street alley they found the suspects were cleaners.

•A driver reported to be tailgating and driving erratically in the 300 block of Helen Street was located and issued a ticket.

•A male who asked police for a ride home to Kitchener was refused. He then informed police he was wanted on an arrest warrant. He was arrested and held in cells.

•Police were called to a landlord-tenant dispute in the 400 block of 16th Avenue South.

•An intoxicated male who was down on the ground on Sixth Avenue North now faces charges of breaching his court conditions.

•An Alberta driver reported to be speeding and passing unsafely in the 4000 block of Highway 3 was given a warning.

“We found this huge positive response and demand,” she said. “There is market research that says there is an audience that wants this film. They haven’t seen their story on the screen. It’s the Field of Dreams.

The trailer (at www.badmothermovie. com) got national recognition.

“CBC covered it, Global TV covered it.

One Mom blog called Scary Mommy — on that site alone more than 40,000 people shared it,” Kapoor said.

Filming wrapped up in the late spring and the production team spent the summer editing. While the post-production work was pretty much complete at summer’s end, Kapoor and Hernandes have been adding final touches right up to last week.

What’s next for The Bad Mother? The production company, Pollinator Films Inc., hopes to attract a distributor to get it into theatres. To that end, 20 per cent of the film’s equity is being sold through a unique crowd-funding arrangement that “turns donors into owners.”

And Creston will get its chance to see the movie on the big screen.

“Maybe at Christmas or for Mother’s Day,” Kapoor said. “That would be fun.”

She describes the making of The Bad Mother as a learning experience.

“I hope there will be several more films.”

While she prefers directing to acting, she doesn’t rule out future appearances. But for now, Kapoor’s attention is on The Bad Mother.

“The test for me for whether this is good or not is if people are moved. If the molecules inside them are moved, whether through laughter or tears, if their chemistry changes through watching this film for 90 minutes, that will be a success for me.”

A happy consequence of not being tied to an office, working from wherever there is a high-speed computer connection, is that Kapoor and her family are able to spend time with her mother. Sarah’s husband, John is working in Kingsgate and their seven-year-old is attending Adam Robertson Elementary School.

“We walk the same road to school as I did,” she smiles. “David hates Toronto and I am not a huge fan of Vancouver. So we have split the difference and chosen Creston!”

Having pounded a symbolic wooden stake through the heart of the secretive, disdainful and poweramassing Stephen Harper, people who are fed up with unresponsive governments have no further to look for a new target than Victoria.

The latest revelations about the Premier Christy Clark government’s distaste for providing information to anyone outside its inner circle is, if you happen to be a democrat, simply depressing.

What is it that generates the secrecy and distrust in these — I use the term loosely in this case — public servants? In the provincial Liberals’ case it seems to be little more than it despises all forms of opposition, whether it comes from the public, the media or the opposition parties.

It’s a poorly kept secret that the Clark team isn’t a fan of letting anyone but its supporters in on the decision-making process that each and every policy and piece of legislation goes through. But the revelations in recent weeks that ministers and bureaucrats routinely “triple delete” (this era’s new “hanging chad” for a description of something almost no one seems to have known about before) emails make it plain that the government has no intent on allowing anyone, not me as a reporter, not NDP MLAs in opposition and not, my friends, even you, regardless of which party you might support.

Information in the Clark government is provided on a need-toknow basis and none, repeat none, of us are deemed to have any need to know other than what this government wants us to know.

How paranoid is this bunch?

Clark says she rarely sends emails, preferring to govern “face to face” with her staff and ministers. So we now know what keeps her so busy

when she disappears from sight for days and weeks on end. Instead of cranking out emails or instant messages to convey her thoughts to those she works with, she apparent-

There are some students out there, and we all know them, that try hard and work hard and always seem to do everything right. Everyone else just tells themselves they’re stupid and can’t do it. That’s when people stop. They stop trying to do well, they stop working hard and they stop caring. After a while of seeing others succeed and watching yourself fail, you just accept the fact that you can’t do it.

But perseverance is a virtue we all learn about as a kid and it seems to be something that many people are lacking. When things get difficult, we often just give up. Then we feel almost guilty that we didn’t try, but then, after some time, we just stop caring.

Everyone is always saying to let go of your worries and to live a stress-free life, but a little worry and stress can keep people in line. It can keep them from giving up and make sure that they still care. But obviously handing in an assignment on time, for most people, isn’t stressful. Why do students now not seem to worry about punctuality, grades and quality work?

I think I might have some idea, but to be honest, it’s probably just because they’re lazy. I’m also thinking that maybe, just maybe, kids

don’t think that it matters, especially in the younger grades. But really it does. Not necessarily the grades, but the work ethic. If you teach yourself at a young age to work hard and try your best you

Post-it Notes, or stickies, those teeny pieces of colorful notepaper often used as reminders by the elderly who are concerned about memory loss, are another favourite within those hallowed chambers.

The easier to collect and destroy them. Heck, I can’t stand Twitter because it limits messages to 140 characters, and Christy Clark could write an entire legislative package on a sticky note. Can etching the words on the head of a pin be next?

The always articulate and wise observer of provincial politics, Paul Willcocks, wrote last week in the Tyee online news service that “the state has immense power, and politicians and their operatives are motivated to wield that power to protect their own interests.

“Citizens, ultimately, are protected by the rule of law. If the state’s agents put themselves above the law, citizens have lost the most important thing standing between them and oppression.”

By now anyone interested in the provincial political scene knows that

Clark brought in a former privacy commissioner to assess the situation and comment on recommendations made by information and privacy commissioner Elizabeth Denham, who was clearly frustrated by what she sees. Or, more to the point, what she doesn’t see.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone blows off Denham’s concerns, dismissing them as “interpretations”. But as Willcocks pointed out, “the commissioner, under the law, makes rulings. Government can appeal through an adjudication process involving a Supreme Court justice.” In other words, the government members and staff do not have a choice but to comply with her rulings unless they are overturned in an appeal process. They can’t simply blow off her findings as differences in interpretation.

I’ll give the last words to Willcocks: “There has been no accountability, no explanation for government inaction on years of reports setting out similar problems and abuses.

Denham’s report invites the conclusion that there was a widespread belief in government that they were above the law.

“And if politicians and their appointees will break one law to protect their interests, they will break any law. The only test is whether they will get caught. (And without the whistleblower in this case, they wouldn’t have been caught.)

“This isn’t really about freedom of information anymore. It’s about the rights of all citizens to be able to count on the rule of law to curb abuse by the state.

“And today, British Columbians have little reason to believe they have that protection.”

Trying, failing and trying again The Teen Take Emily Ritter-Riegling will do just fine in high school. A lot of students, however, think that when they want to, when it really matters, they will be able to study, hand in assignments on time and pay attention in class. But that’s not how it works. It’s a skill set that is learned, practiced and perfected, and that’s something teens sometimes don’t understand. That even in Grade 6, when your grades don’t matter and the missing assignments stay missing, your work ethic will stay with you until you graduate and even further.

This generation is filled with people who have short attention spans and want everything to come to them

right away. We live in a fast world that moves and changes every second. Is this why youth now often stop when things take too long or are too hard? They can’t seem to stay with something and finish it to the end. The world always has so much else going on, so many things much more interesting than an English report. They become distracted and unmotivated because they think they can’t do it.

But is there a way to change the fixed mindsets of today’s youth? Is there a way to make them see not just what is in front of them, but also behind? I don’t think we should be doting on the students, but I also don’t believe in shaming them. Sometimes they need encouragement and to be shown a different way to see things: if one smart, educated, talented adult told a struggling student that they’re not a failure, that they only failed, and that they have a choice to let that one failure drag them down or inspire them to be better. We need to be shown that the good things in life come if you work for them and that you can do whatever you want to if you care enough and stick with it.

Clinic not a solution to ER waits To the Editor: (Re: “Walk-in Clinic Would Lessen ER Waits”, Oct. 29) One of the health priorities of the Creston Valley Health Working Group has been to recruit physicians with the advanced skills required to retain our fully functional hospital with a 24/7 emergency department. Many small communities in our province lack this important community service, which we are committed to support.

In order to have a fully functional hospital and emergency department, our community requires family physicians who provide emergency department coverage, management of admitted patients, clinical office hours and care for patients in extended/long-term facilities. This means that Creston requires full service family physicians to keep our hospital operational.

Most physicians would admit that, while there are many rewards to practicing in Creston, there are also some personal and professional challenges.

These challenges include the responsibilities of being an emergency physician in a geographically isolated community and providing after-hours/ weekend/holiday coverage.

Fortunately, in Creston, this challenging aspect of rural medicine is shared amongst all of the physicians practicing here. The fact that all of our doctors work in our hospital creates an equity amongst our physicians — they share the load, for which we are all grateful.

Walk-in clinics may seem like an attractive option or easy solution to increase access to physician care — we know they work in larger centres.

However, not all family physicians maintain the skills necessary to work in emergency departments or hospitals.

Creston has the challenge of requiring family physicians who do have emergency department and hospital skills to maintain those services at our facility. A walk-in clinic in our community, utilizing practitioners who do not work in the hospital, would create a work imbalance between physicians that would not equally share hospital and emergency responsibilities. The natural consequence of that inequity is that, likely, local physicians would gradually leave full service practice for office/daytime work only. This would leave us without our much-needed emergency department and in-patient hospital coverage.

Our emergency department is, by default, our “walk-in patient” option for those citizens without a family physician, or those with an emergency. As with any emergency department, patients are seen in priority of their need. While everyone agrees that there is a hardship with an indefinite wait in the emergency department, it remains our most viable option to maintain hospital care in the Creston Valley.

The security of keeping our hospital here is maintained by recruiting full service physicians with advanced skills. The Creston Valley Health Working Group’s continued service to the community, through our physician recruiter, is improving our supply of family doctors. We are pleased to report that over the past year: •Dr. Jeremy Kass and family arrived in January. Dr. Kass established his practice in Creston in February; •Dr. Stacey Hoselton and family arrived in September. Dr. Hoselton is engaged in long-term locum at Family

Practice Associates for Dr. Tim Troughton’s patients, through May 2016; and •Dr. Eleanor Huettmeyer, as of September, has joined Blue Heron Medical Clinic, where she is establishing her practice. During her first year in Creston, Dr. Huettmeyer provided locum services at various clinics throughout the community.

rower at the time of mortgage (it is often included in the total mortgage amount), and then provide the lender with protection from losses in the event of default. These programs are designed to help people purchase homes without having a full 20 per cent to put down, and help to provide incentive lenders to take on these riskier loans because the risk is managed at no cost to them.

So, having looked at the mortgage insurance aspect of down payments, let’s take a look at the down payments themselves. This is where things can begin to vary a little bit because each lender may have slightly different criteria for what constitutes an acceptable down payment. I don’t have time to get into every different policy that each lender might have, so I will speak to what is broadly acceptable for forms of down payment.

Generally speaking, they want to see that the down payment is from your own resources. The simplest example would be a down payment from someone’s savings. For this, the lender will want to see a three-month history on the account that the money is coming from.

The reason for this is to identify a savings history during that period, and to question any large deposits that are unexplained. If there is a large deposit, often they will want an explanation and documentation. One example might be that a person sold an extra vehicle or some other asset. For this scenario, the lender may want to see some documentation supporting this. If the money is coming from an RRSP, the lender will most often request a three-month histo-

ry on the RRSP account, along with proof that the RRSP has been cashed out and deposited into a chequing account.

One exception to the requirement for a down payment from your own resources is a gifted down payment from a family member. Lenders and insurers will allow a down payment to be gifted from an immediate family member. The main thing that is stipulated with this form of down payment is that a gift letter is given stating that the money is not required to be repaid.

Another exception can be a borrowed down payment. Depending on the debt service rations, loan to value, and other criteria, a lender may allow a borrower to borrow their down payment from another source such as a line of credit, unsecured loan, private loan agreement, etc., as long as the payment for this loan is included in the debt service ratios and they are still acceptable.

This has been a very broad overview on what lenders and insurers look for in a down payment when purchasing a property. If you would like to purchase a property, it is always best to go and sit down with a mortgage professional. I find that sometimes people aren’t even considering purchasing as an option because they don’t have a down payment sitting in their account. Upon review there may be a number of options. A mortgage professional will look at your whole situation and identify all of your options.

Options despite limited capital

For this month, we will be continuing to take a look at the five Cs of credit.

Mortgage Corner Dean Bala ings history and other factors that supplement credit history) and collateral (assets owned in addition to down payment). In previous columns we took a look at what lenders look at when reviewing credit and capacity, that is, the ability to make loan payments.

The next one we will explore is capital, which is the down payment required when purchasing a property.

When looking at the down payment, there are basically two classes to look at, insured and uninsured. A down payment requires mortgage insurance when there is less than 20 per cent put down. If a borrower only has a five-19 per cent down payment, the lender is required to insure the mortgage with a mortgage insurer. The mortgage insurers commonly used are Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Genworth Financial Canada and Canada Guarantee. They collect an insurance premium from the bor-

Moving Along Together Series 2 • Week 7 Envision

This is the seventh of eight articles being sponsored through TAPS as part of a Moving Along Together Program (for people experiencing memory changes and their caregivers). This is funded by a Columbia Basin Trust Social Grant. In this second series we’ll be sharing these ideas to stimulate discussion and inspiration through exploring our understanding of memory, what affects it and some current information on ways to improve or maintain it.

Envision is the theme this week, to explore how we can use our imagination to elaborate on the information that our senses take in so we can make better quality memories, which are easier for us to recall.

With increased elaboration a deeper level of memory processing happens and so better learning occurs. When we attach a visual image, or a sound or smell to the information we want to remember then the information becomes much more memorable.

Another way to elaborate a memory is to make an interactive memory; that is, to have the things you want to remember interact in some way, like a mini scene or story. For example if you want to remember to buy carrots and eggs at the store, imagine eggs with legs running down the aisle carrying carrots, or to remember toilet paper and cheese, imagine a block of cheese with toilet paper roll wheels. Seems silly doesn’t it? Give it a try, wake up your creative/fun brain and see what happens.

Memory Tip for names: If you are working on learning someone’s name, visualize their face and find something unique about their features and find a way to connect

that with their name. For example Mr. Schnozel has a large nose, or Bridget has big eyes. Try this linking yourself: think of someone you know very well. Close your eyes and start thinking deeply about how they look, hair, eyes, their mood. What did you come up with? Now try it with someone you are not so familiar with. Practicing this will make it easier.

Memory Tips for remembering objects: Pegging This works especially well for people who have a strong verbal memory. Choose a series of things you always remember in order.

Numbers, letters or a rhyme. Now hang the things you want to remember on to the words. For example: before I leave the house I want to remember money, a ticket to a show and keys, so I hang them on the numbers 1,2,3 in my mind, then I think of rhythm: 1. money 2. show.

3 keys. Off I go. Do you remember those objects? By adding much more detail to the memory, the image is more entertaining and holds in our memory longer.

If you are trying to remember single items use your imagination to add detail and action Rose: imagine it shrinks or enlarges. Pen: what colour? Picture a huge pen, throw the pen in your imagination and watch how it flies through the air. The main point of envisioning and imagery is to have fun, bring into your mind funny or surprising things, and play with them in your mind.

Even if you wind up laughing out loud, the more ways you envision the item you want to recall the more likely it will be memorized.

Putting these ideas into action: Create a story to go with a memory – recall something from your life, a photo perhaps. and make up a story about it, write it down in your journal.

Life in rural B.C. can be tough as a teenager. I know — I’ve been there. I couldn’t wait to graduate high school and be able to move to the “big city” and had little plans of returning to

Memories of the Second World War Frank Priestley, who passed away in Victoria at the age of 95 earlier this year, emigrated to Creston from Bolton, England, in 1964. He was accompanied by his wife, Connie, and children, Joanna (Wilson) and Alan. A third child, Janice, was born in Creston. Frank served in the British Army from 1940-46. The Advance is grateful to Joanna Wilson for providing her father’s memoirs, By the Barrack Gate, parts of which are excerpted here to acknowledge Remembrance Day.

breathe in and breathe out and cough at the right moment (which we called the short arm inspection). I guess one had to be nearly dead not be accepted at that time. I did not know anyone that failed the medical. Anyway, I was given an A1 rating.

Next, an officer asked me my trade. I replied, “Grocery, sir.”

My thoughts in writing this — some of my memoirs of my small involvement in the “Hitler War” — is to record and share with the reader some highlights as I recall them. In latter years memory plays tricks on me, such as only remembering the good times and forgetting the bad times, which most servicemen can equate with.

In the 1930s most of us, I think, had never travelled more than 50 miles from home base before enlisting.

Later I found out he meant “stores”. (After all, the possibility of stellar flight was the furthest from our thoughts at that time!)

Chilwell Basic Training Depot Nottingham All servicemen went first of all to basic military training, so we commenced what we call “squad bashing”, considered essential for good order and discipline. We were sequestered in groups of 30 or 80 forces and drilled by a sergeant of the regular force, who pretended (I think) that we were all dumb skulls of the worst order. We endured endless marching up

and down. Eventually, we were given our WWI trust LeeEnfield rifle, after which we did all the various maneuvers required, such as slope arms, order arms, port arms, etc. At the end of 30 days came “pay parade”, which for military discipline at that time entailed the following procedure: two steps forward, then smartly salute the pay officer, pick up the meager few shillings (seven, as I recall), then two steps backwards, about turn, all this under the watchful eye of the sergeant major. If he did not like the way you did this he made us repeat the maneuvers until he was satisfied.

Then to the rifle range, shooting with live ammo at a target at various distances. It was hoped one could get a bull’s eye, or at least a “magpie”. I recall one of our so-called barrack room lawyers exhorted us not to do too well, or we could be transferred

to the infantry as a sharpshooter.

So after the 30 days we were considered somewhat proficient and sent off to an Ordinance Training Depot at Tidworth, Hampshire. Tidworth was strictly a military town in the middle of Salisbury Plain, with little or no social amenities for young soldiers, so at the time we became, as we called it, browned off (meaning bored to death).

Life took quite a turn when we received a red alert in September 1940. Apparently an invasion of Britain was imminent at any moment. We received orders to be confined to barracks and to carry our rifles and gas masks at all times.

I was placed on a promontory overlooking a place called Perham Downs, considered to be a prime landing area for enemy airborne troops.

An officer approached me and said, “How is your field of fire, soldier?”

I replied, “Very good, sir.”

“Right-oh,” he replied. “Carry on.” I looked around and I appeared to be quite alone.

In retrospect, I say thank God that Hitler considered it was not the time to invade Britain. When you think of it, we would have been ill prepared for this. Maybe Hitler and his gang wanted first of all for our Fighter Command and Royal Navy to be neutralized. Anyway, it gave Britain some time to reorganize and strengthen our defenses, as the Dunkirk evacuation a few weeks earlier had scattered troops all over Britain, so it gave precious time to eventually form mighty armies.

El Alamein Battle November 1942 Ten British and Commonwealth divisions faced the enemy positions, mostly untried as yet in combat. We had approximately 1,000 tanks to Rommel’s 600, overpowering superiority and aircraft manpower and we had much shorter supply lines than the enemy, with our backs to the Nile Delta supply base.

The main problem for us was that Rommel’s defenses were protected in depth by five miles of minefields, which Rommel called Devil’s Garden. It included much barbed wire and fields of murderous crossfire. There was no room for any flanking maneuvers, owing

to what is called the Quattara Depression, so the frontal defenses had to be broken before our tanks could break through. It took twelve days of bitter fighting before the German and Italian defenses were eventually broken. The Eighth Army had 13,000 casualties in the battle. The enemy had apparent losses of 75,000 men, 1,000 guns and 500 tanks, which included the 1,500-mile retreat to Tunisia. But then the Rommel (the cagy Desert Fox) was caught between the Eighth Army and Eisenhower’s Fifth Army landing from Algiers. A resounding defeat was inflicted on its enemy forces and then Italy was, to all intents and purposes, out of the war, too.

You can imagine the horrendous job. Our sappers had to clear two paths through the enemy minefields so that the tanks could go through, quite often under intense shellfire and with confusion, what with all the noise, smoke and dust from our own 800-plus flights overhead. Teams of sappers worked in some sort of unison, some panning for Teller mines (some three to four inches below the sand) and others taping the path wide enough for our tanks to go through. Our mine detectors were often wireless, so it proved more expedient to dig down for them with a bayonet.

Picture this: a summer sunset, and you in your canoe. The only sound is your paddle in concert with your liquid highway and the eerie call of the loons.

Ahhhh… For most of us, when (or if) we think of canoeing, it’s these unhurried, languid images that are brought to mind.

But go-hard gal Kristina Leidums is not like most of us. For Leidums, thoughts of canoeing run more along the lines of tracing the path of explorer David Thompson, from Rocky Mountain House, Alta., to Thunder Bay, Ont. That’s 2,350 kilometres. In nine weeks. In a canoe.

Visit the Creston Valley Public Library Nov. 12 as the passionate paddler recalls adventures that have taken her across our great land, seeing the vast wilderness through the eyes of the great explorers.

“This talk will be about my lifelong passion for canoe tripping, which I can truly describe as a love,” said Leidums. “Canoe tripping has allowed me to experience Ontario wilderness, as well as rivers in the Yukon and across Canada. I’ll share pictures and stories about the joys and trials of canoe tripping. The joys can be captured in one of my favourite images: seeing a piece of the sky as the tree canopy opens up at the

(In his more than five years of service, Frank served as far south as South Africa and spent much time in both North Africa and Europe. When he was finally discharged and returned home — after a lengthy delay because married men had priority — he returned home to his family.)

Back home I didn’t exactly get a hero’s welcome. At that time I had two teenage sisters at home. I recall taking a bath and, in my excitement maybe, I forgot to clean the ring! My sisters scolded me for years. Even now I kid them about this. I said, there I was after six years or so of undergoing “shot and shell” and this was all the welcome home I got. Also, in my absence the girls decided (I don’t blame them for this)

The Art in the Chamber show starts Nov. 6, and it is sure to be a crowd pleaser, as well. All of the exhibiting artists are members of the Creston Art Club, and will be displaying new work as well as some older favourites. The featured artists are Anne Graves, Marion Evans, Shelly Lamb, Kurtis Ladner, Linda Bullock and Chris Schmidt. The display will be an eclectic mix with watercolors, acrylics, oils, fabric and more. It will also be bursting with colours, various shapes and sizes, and prices to match. Visitors are sure to find something that will make a perfect gift for Christmas or any other occasion. The Art in the Chamber show ends on Dec. 30, so you will have lots of time to check it out. Remember, art is a gift that lasts a lifetime.

These community art displays are sponsored by the Community of Creston Arts Council, the Creston Valley Public Library and the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Centre to enable artists from Yahk to Riondel to display their art and to let the public see the wonders of the world through the artists’ eyes. The art in both locations is for sale so please support the local artists and the venues.

Prairie singers taking Council helps community stage at Sasquatch be inclusive and diverse SASQUATCH

On Nov. 12, three unique emerging Canadian songwriters will tell their tales and sing their songs at the Sasquatch. These three artists share Prairie roots and the joy of a great country folk tune, and look forward to sharing their songs ‘in the round’ on this special stage. Richard Inman and Logan McKillop arrive in Creston after two weeks together on their fall tour to join Justine Vandergrift as part of her Sailor album release tour.

Vandergrift’s clear, rich voice and finely-tuned song-craft bespeak an affinity with the likes of Patty Griffin, Bonnie Raitt and Sarah Harmer, but her own brand of country soul has deeper roots than that, ones that dig into the hymns and folk songs of her central Alberta youth. Her two studio releases reveal a rare and irresistible knack for melody, and Sailor represents a deepening of that artistry. Vandergrift is like the old hymns she grew up with — even if you can’t quite put your finger on

what makes them genuine and authentic, they are undeniably so.

Growing up on the edge of Riding Mountain National Park in Manitoba, McKillop has a multitude of songs for every change in the prairie sky. Being a modern day traveling troubadour, he has seen it all: the jungles of Cambodia, the rainforests of Peru, the highlands of Scotland, the rugged tundra of Baffin Island. His travels and experiences have shaped his ever expanding catalogue of sound.

Inman is quickly becoming a staple of Winnipeg’s folk and country scene. With a butter-rich voice and delicate musical touch, he crafts mature songs that feel at once deeply familiar and bracingly fresh. Inman has proven himself a savvy songwriter and true Prairie gem.

Tickets are $12 in advance at Buffalo Trails Coffee House, Kingfisher Used Books and Black Bear Books, and $15 at the door, which opens at 6 p.m.; the show starts at 7. Teens receive a special $8 rate only at the door.

Ortencia Ida Saar

July 8, 1924 ~ October 16, 2015

Ortencia Ida Saar, 91, of Burnaby, BC, passed away peacefully the morning of Friday, October 16, 2015.

Born in San Guillermo, Argentina on July 8, 1924 to Alberto and Rosa (Spycher) Huber, she was an artist, seamstress, traveler and adored mother and grandmother who maintained an adventuresome and youthful nature throughout her long life. She was married to Volf Saar on March 11, 1957 in Argentina with whom she raised a family and shared the passion for exploring the world until his passing late in 2014.

In the early sixties the family immigrated to Canada where, as the children grew, Ida joined Volf in the family retail photography/music business, opening their first store in Cranbrook, BC and eventually a second in Creston, BC. In 1981 Ida and Volf entered an early "working retirement” as tour guides leading RV caravans to Mexico, Central America and Alaska and, in 1986 they moved to their new home base in Burnaby. Ida always cherished the friendships that grew from their adventures and continued to stay in touch with many of these friends. In later years she continued to travel with Volf to places like Southeast Asia, Europe and even crossed Russia on the TransSiberian express. Ida's many water colors provide a colorful record of the people and places they encountered in their travels.

Ida is survived by her sister Angelita Huber de Appas of Mar del Plata, Argentina; children Wolf (Leilani) Saar of Seattle, Sonia (Trevor) Ross of Calgary; and grandchildren Alex, Andrei and Abbi Saar of Seattle.

A memorial event to remember both Ida and Volf will take place at 2 pm on Saturday, November 7, 2015 in the Lady Jane Room at the Timberlea complex in Burnaby (3771 Bartlett Court, Burnaby, BC V3J 7G8).

A welcoming and inclusive community is about belonging and participating with your neighbours, community groups, families and friends. I am proud to call Creston home, and I believe that we have strong leadership in our commitment to inclusion, diversity and equality.

But we can always do more, be better and share more responsibility for respecting and promoting diversity and community inclusion.

One way to achieve this is by joining the Kootenay Community Council. The community council is a way to meet persons with diverse abilities, share your contacts and interests, see your community benefit and witness personal growth.

In Creston, we already have many community partnerships where persons with diverse abilities assist local businesses and participate in a number of

community activities. We can continue this positive trend and share this information with other areas. Community councils are a real, local and direct venue for persons with developmental disabilities, their families and support persons to participate in and have a say in activities in their community.

As a board member of our local Cresteramics program, I had the opportunity to learn about the local community council and wanted to become a member. I joined the council because I can see so many places where persons with diverse abilities can make real contributions. The council gives me a chance to hear directly from persons with diverse abilities — what they want to do, how they can contribute and what support they need to be valuable members of their communities.

ers and other community partners. We volunteer our time because we are passionate and dedicated to using our expertise and experience to create more inclusive communities, to break down the barriers associated with disability.

Community councils operate in each of Community Living BC’s (CLBC) Community Living Centre areas, ensuring that self-advocates, families, community members and service providers play a major role in achieving CLBC’s vision of fostering good lives in welcoming communities. CLBC is the provincial Crown agency that provides funding and supports to adults with developmental disabilities.

I truly enjoy being part of the council and I am happy to share some of my experiences with you. Please consider sharing your time and skills with such a valuable group.

Arthur (Art) Collier July 18, 1920 ~ October 29, 2015

Remembering Art Collier Art was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, the son and only child of Walter and Alice Collier, both of English descent. Walter was a postman and WWI veteran, passing away when Art was in his sixteenth year. Alice was a wife, mother and homemaker.

Together Walter and Alice provided a loving and stable home where Art grew to become a kind, gracious and responsible gentleman.

Art is remembered as a young boy whose fascination with birds later took sustained flight through his thirtythree year career with the Royal Canadian Air Force.

He studied aeronautics at "Tech on the Hill" in Calgary and served in WWII as a young man. He remained with the RCAF until 1972 when he retired and became an orchardist.

Art married his first wife, Penny, of whom their son Gary was born before Art served in WWII. Art married Molly in 1948, of whom was born their daughters Caroline, Alice and Susan. Art and Molly embraced marriage and family life fully and thoughtfully. They raised the girls and connected them with their brother while Art continued to serve in the RCAF, with Molly a devoted "at home" wife and mother.

Art is remembered as a steady and loving father.

He loved the family and making things grow in the garden. He was often found tinkering under the hood of a car. He liked to hunt, fish and camp.

He enjoyed gathering with family and friends, and met regularly with community over games of cribbage. In 1972 Art retired from the air force. He and Molly then enjoyed the next thirty years as orchardists and fine citizens in the Creston valley.

While in Creston they enjoyed and cared for both Art's mother and Molly's father during their parents' elder

years. Sunday suppers were appreciated at the orchard home, and gave the family foundation, strength and warm memories to take forward.

Art is remembered as a working man and a family man.

He is remembered as the proud and happy grandparent of eight grandchildren and great-grandparent of five great-grandchildren.

Art is remembered for his steadfast, loving committment to Molly through many happy, healthy years and through the years of Molly's illness with Alzheimer's disease.

He is remembered as a brave soldier through his own declining years. He graciously received care over the past few years as a resident of Swan Valley Lodge in Creston where he died of old age.

Art was predeceased by Penny, Molly, Lynn (granddaughter) and John (son-in-law).

He is survived by his four children, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

On November 11, Warrant Officer Arthur Collier will be remembered with his group of veterans as the RCAF flyby gives honour and rememberance to an era of gentleman who served and gave their lives for the collective good and protection of those whom they had loved and left behind.

Family will gather at a later date in remembrance of their beloved Art.

Concert celebrating new seats at Prince Charles CRESTON COMMUNITY AUDITORIUM SOCIETY

After two years of fundraising, new seats have been installed in the Prince Charles Theatre, and the C re s t o n Community Auditorium Society is ready to celebrate. On Saturday, more than 20 performers will take to the stage to offer a concert — which the audience can enjoy in greater comfort than before.

“We’re thrilled to present this lineup of some of Creston’s best talent,” said auditorium society vice-president Brian Lawrence. “There will be music, singing and dancing, offering an excellent cross-section of the diverse talent that uses the stage.”

The performances in Take Your Seat include groups such as the women’s choir Key of She, Steppin’ Out (Debra Mehrer, Eric Johnson, Lorraine Smith) and the Swan Charmers (Ilana

Cameron, Kurt Goltz, Karl Sommerfeld), and duets by Rhonda MacLellan and Bob van der Poel, and Ian Mackay and Velle Weitman.

Solo singers include Cory Hammond, Brooke Douma, Marlene Nash, Erin Collison, Marybeth Stenhouse, Jolah Hockley, Willow Adams, Morgan Benty and Frances Collision, with instrumental numbers provided by Skylar Eyre, Noah Koehoorn and Dan Caverly.

Musical theatre is also well represented, with songs from The Music Man, Shenadoah, Carousel and Kiss Me, Kate performed by, respectively, Lawrence, Matt Hansen, Jennifer Adams and Gary Atha.

And fancy footwork isn’t left out, with numbers by Anna Payne and Christie Booker, as well as the line dancing club.

“This is a big night,” said Lawrence. “We’re all excited to perform knowing that the

audience won’t be squirming in their seats, trying to stay comfortable.”

The seat campaign started over two years ago, with a significant contribution coming from the Creston and District Credit Union, which matched the first $25,000 in donations from the community. It was followed earlier this year by a $57,000 donation from the Regional District of Central Kootenay.

The seats arrived in midOctober and were installed, with volunteers assisting a professional installer, in time for the Creston Valley Music Teachers’ Association’s concerts on Oct. 23 and 25.

“The auditorium society is grateful to all of our donors and volunteers,” said Lawrence. “The financial and physical efforts associated with this project have certainly been appreciated.”

Take Your Seat runs at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors/students and $5 for children under 12, available at Black Bear Books, Kingfisher Used Books and Creative Fix, and at the door.

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats found no success on a weekend road trip, losing 7-3 to the 100 Mile House Wranglers, 3-0 to the Kamloops Storm and 1-0 to the Revelstoke Grizzlies.

“You go through stretches in a season where you don’t feel you’re getting the rewards you deserve and Saturday and Sunday was definitely an example of that,” he said.

This weekend, the Thunder Cats host the Golden Rockets Friday, and visit them Saturday.
