Dominican Feed the Kids wields powerful impact Former Lacombians now operate program which serves 900 people weekly KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS

ecently a group of Central Albertans travelled to the Dominican Republic to assist with a program called Dominican Feed the Kids, which services approximately 300 people each day the program runs.

Dominican Feed the Kids is currently run by Donna and Bill Reimer, a couple originally from Lacombe. The two have taken over the program from the original English founders and have grown the organization so that it now services babies, pregnant mothers, young children and seniors.

Donna and Bill took over the program six years ago and have since built their life around bettering the situation of others.

“When we started about six years ago, they were not the healthy children you see now in Ascension. There was a lot of sickness due to malnutrition. There was sickness from not having enough to eat and not having proper vitamins,” said Donna.

“We increased the feeding program from about 20 kids to about 250-300 kids a day by the end of that first year. We started a vitamin program, which gives the kids a vitamin after they leave from their meal.

Within a very short time, a regular vitamin three times a week made a huge difference in the health of the kids.”

This October, Marlene Pannenbecker of Lacombe brought a group of 22 Albertans to work with her sister Donna’s program. The group spent seven days in the Dominican Republic, three of which were spent providing hands-on assistance to the people of Ascension, where the program is based.

Donna said although the program was successful before, it has grown into a different kind of success. Donna and Bill realized they needed to start helping expecting mothers produce healthier babies.

“We started looking after the moms as soon as they knew they were pregnant.

We would get the moms on prenatal vitamins, teach them how to look after themselves and to eat properly if they could. If they couldn’t, we would feed them during the program. We started getting much healthier babies which gave us much healthier toddlers and in turn, much healthier children.”

Dominican Feed the Kids is operational in three villages, with the main portion of the organization in the village of Ascension. There are currently 62 babies involved in the baby program between the three villages. Most of the babies in the program are prematurely born, born with health deficits or issues, are twins or are undersized, unhealthy babies. These

The baby program is the only part of Dominican Feed the Kids that is a sponsored program. Those wishing to get involved can pledge $75 to a baby each month, which takes care of medical needs, formula, pablum, dried fruit, clothes and other needs for the babies.

The program also now includes a hot meal for seniors, with deliveries made to those who are unable to journey to the facility. Seniors range in age from early 50s to late 80s, with a variety of health statuses and needs. The program has grown to include these members of the community with a great success.

Pannenbecker has been a part of the program since her sister and brotherin-law took it over. She has since made numerous trips back to the Dominican Republic, either with family, friends or both, to assist with supplies and man-

power in the program.

“The program gives me and others an avenue to help them help the people in the villages live a better life. Not only do we get to help them by providing food and care, we get to personally know them when we visit,” Pannenbecker said.

“We can be part of helping the Haitian people helping themselves by assisting them in their endeavours to do better for themselves. The people of these villages have so much talent and such great ideas of ways to provide for themselves, they just do not have the means to get the items needed to start. Through this program we can be in Canada and still help in small way.”

Ascension is a Haitian bateye village, meaning those who reside in the village are of Haitian descent who were brought into the Dominican Republic to work in local sugar cane factories. With these factories bought out by American companies and closed, bateyes like Ascension are now in worse shape than ever.

Pannenbecker said programs such as Dominican Feed the Kids make a huge difference in the community, both physically and morally. The mortality rate of the village for pregnant mothers and young children has dropped and the babies are being born much healthier.

According to Donna and Pannenbecker, the mothers are much healthier and are able to take better care of their children as they grow.

“Dominican Feed the Kids has impacted the village so incredibly much.

Because of the feeding program, most children in the village of Ascension are now healthy, happy and going to school.

Five to seven years ago this was not the case. Dominican Feed the Kids has expanded now into two other villages that are some of the poorest sugar cane villages on the north coast. I hope in the next two to three years we will see the same difference as we now see in Ascension,” Pannenbecker said.

Ten Thousand Villages accepting donations for Syrian refugees

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Ten Thousand Villages Store is organizing various means of reaching out and helping with the Syrian refugee crisis. “MCC (Mennonite Central Committee) is taking donations of items for the refugees,” said Tina Bale, manager of the Red Deer store. “We’ve decided that we would be a drop-off place just to make it a little bit easier for people. That way, they don’t have to go to Edmonton or Calgary to drop items off,” she said.

“We were actually approached by a running group in Red Deer. They called us to say they had all of these donations and wondered if it was possible to bring them to our store. They knew were were affiliated with MCC. “I thought, what a great opportunity. I called MCC and they said that would be great because they have people coming and going from Edmonton to Calgary all of the

time,” she said. Those interested in helping out are encouraged to put together relief kits containing new items such as four large bars of soap, one plastic bottle of shampoo, four large bars of laundry soap, four adultsized toothbrushes, four new bath towels, two widetooth combs, one fingernail clipper, a box of adhesive bandages and one package of sanitary pads as some examples. Hygiene kits can include such things as one adult-size toothbrush, one large bar of bath soap, one fingernail clipper and one hand towel.

Other examples of helpful items include infant care kits which might include two gowns/sleepers, two undershirts, four cloth diapers, one receiving blanket, four safety pins and one large bar of mild soap, one pair of socks and one cap.

Ultimately, MCC is inviting people to respond in one of four ways - to give (to their ongoing humanitarian response in the region); to learn how to sponsor a refugee; to advocate and to pray for those affected by the crisis.

Also, for every eligible dollar donated by individual Canadians to Syrian relief efforts through to Dec. 31st, the government will place a matching amount in its Syria Emergency Relief Fund. MCC is able to apply for access to those funds.

Bale noted that MCC is involved in several of the affected nations - in Syria, Iraq and surrounding countries, the organization has 27 ongoing projects that deliver emergency relief. And even though the refugee crisis isn’t getting quite the same amount of coverage it once was, the urgency in terms of need hasn’t faded.

“It’s still a crisis, and it’s still going on,” she said.

“We are in such a privileged country and we might not understand exactly what they are going through, but we can sympathize and empathize because we’ve all felt displaced at some point in our lives. If we can just connect with that, and understand that these are families, these are children, mothers and fathers. We need to do what we can to bring hope.

“I think that is one of the biggest things that Ten Thousand Village does - providing hope to people that don’t have any.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

OPINION The Movember movement is underway again this year As men around the world have begun to grow their moustaches as ‘Movember’ kicked off earlier this week, it’s a reminder of what a terrific cause this really is both as a fundraiser and an awareness-builder.

Local businesses are also getting behind the cause with many encouraging their male staff and clients to help raise money for prostate cancer research as well.

The Movember movement was launched back in 2003 by some guys in Australia who wanted to bring back the moustache into fashion while raising money for prostate cancer research. There are now formal campaigns in Australia, New Zealand, the U.S., Canada, the UK, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa and Ireland.

People around the world have since taken up the cause, and today Movember is truly an international fundraising success. According to the web site Movember & Sons, the campaign is also serving as an effective ‘awareness-building’ tool.

Since its inception, the Movember movement has raised $677 million and funded over 1,000 programs focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.

According to Movember Canada, each year around 23,600 new cases are diagnosed in Canada and close to 4,000 Canadian men die of the disease every year.

Statistics show that one in eight Canadian men will develop prostate cancer during his lifetime and one in 28 will die of it.

While there are cases of prostate cancer showing up in younger men, it is recommended that men begin an annual screening at age 50 and at age 40 if there is a family history.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, prostate cancer is a malignant tumour that starts in cells of the prostate.

Malignant means that it can spread, or metastasize, to other parts of the body.

Prostate cancer is the most common

cancer in Canadian men. It usually grows slowly and can often be completely removed or managed successfully.

Signs and symptoms of prostate cancer include changes in bladder habits; need to urinate often (frequency), especially at night; intense need to urinate (urgency); difficulty in starting or stopping the urine flow; inability to urinate; weak or decreased urine stream; interrupted urine stream; a sense of incompletely emptying the bladder; burning or pain during urination; or blood in the urine, among others.

Meanwhile, getting behind the cause is easy - Mo Bros sign up and start clean shaven on Nov. 1st. They grow and groom their moustaches for 30 days of Movember all the while raising funds and awareness for men’s health.

This is a campaign that has really taken off world-wide, not only with men taking part but women can get involved by becoming a ‘Mo Sista’. Mo Sistas not only help to fundraise for the cause as well, but they also work to build aware-

ness regarding prostate cancer and encourage the ‘Mo Bros’ in their lives to get checked.

As for the campaign, last year, globally, 719,217 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas took part in Movember and raised $102.3 million.

In Canada, participants raised $24.1 million.

Besides fundraising for prostate cancer research, Movember representatives say they will also continue to work to change habits and attitudes men have about their health and to educate men about the health risks they face.

It’s great to see this kind of support, and it’s a unique initiative that everyone can get behind.

In addition, locally, an official wrap up party for Movember - the Moustache Masquerade 2015 - will take place at Fionn MacCools on Nov. 28th. Red Deerians are encouraged to join in the fun while continuing the conversation.

Is Justin Trudeau a disaster waiting to happen?

There are moments in time when we all stand back and watch a potential disaster developing.

Mouths agape, it is only after the event when some helpful soul exclaims, “Boy we should have seen that coming!”

The wave of support that has lifted Justin Trudeau into the country’s highest office could be that unanticipated disaster unfolding before our eyes.

It is worth remembering that a tidal wave, while compelling to watch from afar, eventually hits shore where its true nature is manifested.

No crystal ball being available, no one can say for certain that a Trudeau and Liberal government will in fact be disastrous.

But seldom has a party

Fewer still are the examples when that party is helmed by a manifestly untested leader set to become the new prime minister – joined by a largely inexperienced caucus when one considers things like actual governing as a desirable job requirement.

Has there ever been a more telling example of our celebrity-driven culture than watching a man,

who has never held executive power, ascend to office with echoes of his being ‘dreamy’ still ringing in our ears?

We have become so accustomed to fawning over people who are famous, not for great achievement but for the fact of being famous, that we willingly abdicate our responsibility as citizens to take the measure of a person, instead preferring to bask in the reflected glow of what may very well be an illusion.

In the United States, there was a similar situation in 2008 when voters chose a man who had served less than one full term in the Senate and elevated him to the White House. President Barack Obama had significant oratorical skills and mem-

orably spoke to adoring crowds in Berlin prior to even winning a single vote.

So complete was his Svengali-like hold on the population that it was considered rudeness to even question his qualifications. Eight years later, and nearing the end of his presidency, he has proven to be an equal opportunity disappointment to those who believed his time in office would result in a sea change in how American society was ordered.

If one wishes to base their support – of what can charitably be called an ‘image’ candidate – on being lifted up to unfamiliar plateaus of hope and change then both Obama and Trudeau have met that bar. To give people hope is no small feat and should

not be dismissed, but neither should actual tested leadership. Trudeau is about to be tested certainly but it might have been prudent to see his readiness instead of simply declaring it in a campaign slogan. It’s like wearing a t-shirt that says ‘Beautiful’ – the rule of thumb being if you have to say it about yourself you probably aren’t it.

Much was said in the campaign about momentum. Trudeau rose and grew in such a way that an aura of inevitably surrounded him by election day. There are always a host of voters who are seduced by the desire to be on the presumptive winning side – which is why it is never a good thing to be on the wrong end of a pre-election poll. These

voters are unfettered by deep thinking. Recordings go platinum and stars are born based on this mom phenomenon.

Every person’s vote is sacred and it would be arrogance to suggest that any of us knows better than our fellow citizens what the best choice is. But we do have the right to expect that votes are cast based on serious, sober reflection – informed by both present and potential issues.

A stratospheric popularity is difficult to ignore.

But, as we all know, what goes up will come down.

When it does, the thud can sometimes be deafening.

Pay for your parking ticket with a toy Motorists who receive parking tickets through to Dec. 4th can once again donate a toy in lieu of payment as part of the City’s Toys for Tickets program.

“It’s all about giving back to the community,” said Fred Dieno, parking coordinator. “The program has been a huge success with more than 4,500 toys collected since the program started.”

Toys for Tickets ran for the eighth time last year with 332 citizens donating toys. All toys collected will once again go to the Red Deer Christmas Bureau to help in meet-

Toys for Tickets was started in Red Deer in 2007 and has been running each year since. Dieno was made aware of this type of campaign through Kingston, Ont. And Boston, Mass. Each city has a similar type program. He heard about these programs in 2006 and he presented it to the senior management team and council.

He gained approval and the program started from there.

Toy donations in lieu of parking tickets will be accepted Dec. 3rd and Dec. 4th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the first floor of City Hall.

All toys must be new and unwrapped in their original packaging. The early payment rate will remain in effect when the ticket is paid for with a toy; however, the value of the toy must equal or exceed the amount owed on the parking ticket. A receipt must

be presented at the time of payment, and if the toy is valued lower than the

price of the ticket, the difference must be paid.

Red Deer has been named a top place to do business according to Alberta Venture magazine.

The November edition of Alberta Venture magazine shines the spotlight on Alberta’s Top 12 Great Communities for Business by pointing out that, “Eighty per cent of Alberta’s population is within a two-hour drive of Red Deer, and the City’s pro-business administration has leveraged this asset to great effect: the value of new commercial permits in the City has more than doubled in the last year.

Officials point to the City’s location as key to its success, plus its surge in population

to just over 100,000.

“There’s no single thing that makes a community a great place to do business,” said Michael Ganley, editor of Alberta Venture. “It depends on the type of business and the natural strengths and weaknesses of the community. But one thing they all have in common is that they’ve made a conscious decision to support and encourage business because they recognize their importance.”

Another connecting tool the City has tapped into is the BOLT Regional Transit System which connectes Red Deer to Lacombe and Blackfalds.

Initial approval given for rebuild of Westpark Middle School The province has given initial approval for the reconstruction of Westpark Middle School. A new school, with capacity for 500 students, will be built to replace the existing facility located at 3310-55th Ave. The government announced the intention to modernize the school in October 2014 and provided funding to scope out the project. Following a detailed evaluation of the facility, it was deter-

mined that it would be more cost-effective to replace the school rather than modernize the facility originally constructed in 1967.

“The Government of Alberta is committed to providing quality learning spaces for students.

Building of schools and other infrastructure projects have been identified as priorities for Albertans.

I’m delighted that the students of Red Deer will have a new middle school

Recognizing the facility is no longer required by the jurisdiction, the Board of Trustees agreed to put the school for sale by way of public tender.

The facility is located on 1.5 ha (3.6 acres) of land. The property includes 13 classrooms, six portable classrooms to be removed, gymnasium, library and administration offices.

The site has been subdivided, creating a separate title to the North Cottage High School which will be retained and operated as an alternative high school program by Red Deer Public Schools.

In the past those interested in doing stand up had to drive to Edmonton or Calgary, now Red Deer has more than one open mic for young budding comics to work on their material.

The fascinating war experiences of Joseph Welsh This year marks the 100th anniversary of the famous Battle of Gallipoli.

That great battle of the First World War was part of a futile attempt by the Allies to seize the Dardanelles Strait, capture the ancient port of Constantinople (Istanbul) and thereby open a sea link from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea and the allied Russian Empire.

Gallipoli is usually associated with Australia and New Zealand, as troops from those two countries played a key role in the invasion of the Gallipoli peninsula. Anzac Day, a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand, is held each year on April 25th, the anniversary of the first land assaults in 1915.

The landings of the troops initially seemed to go well.

However, a five-week delay in the invasion had allowed the Ottoman (Turkish) forces to greatly improve their defenses. The Ottomans also benefited from the brilliant leadership of Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk), who later became the first president of Turkey, in part because of the fame he earned at Gallipoli.

Within a short while, the Gallipoli campaign, much like the Western Front in Belgium and Northern France, bogged down into a bloody stalemate. The Allied troops were largely pinned down along the shore areas, while bearing the brunt of merciless machine gun and artillery fire from the Turks on the ridge of hills above.

DAWE continued, the casualties continued to mount. Some units suffered losses of up to 70% to 80%. The toll was made much worse due to such things as cholera, dysentery, typhus, and trench foot (a severe fungal infection) as well as frostbite, heat stroke and exposure. The Dardanelles Strait soon became filled with hospital ships, sent to handle the escalating numbers of sick and wounded.

What is often overlooked in the accounts of Gallipoli is the role of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment.

It was the only North American unit to serve during the long battle.

The Regiment landed at Sulva Bay on Sept. 20th, 1915. As was the case with all the troops which had gone in before them, the Newfoundlanders suffered heavy losses.

A link between Red Deer and the Battle of Gallipoli involves the participation of Joseph Welsh, the noted local teacher and principal.

He had enlisted with the Herefordshire Regiment, after his application to join the Grenadier Guards was turned down because he was supposedly 1/8 of an inch too short.

In the spring of 1915, his unit was put on the troopship Euripides and

Red Deer Archives N6096. dispatched to the Middle East. After brief stops at Alexandria in Egypt and then the Greek island of Lemnos, Welshâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s regiment embarked for Gallipoli.

The landing went quite well. However, as the troops tried to proceed inland, they were met with fierce resistance. After 10 days, Private Welshâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unit had only managed to advance less than one kilometre from their initial

landing site.

Then, Joseph Welsh was struck by an enemy bullet, just above his right hip.

The stretcher bearers were able to take him down to the beach. However, they had to leave him out of the blazing sun under some bushes, until nightfall made it safe enough to him to be transported out to one of the hospital ships.

While an operation on

the ship was able to remove the bullet, Private Welsh was sent to a makeshift hospital in Malta for further recovery. He was initially kept at Tigne, which he found to be a poorly-run and overcrowded facility with very bad food. Fortunately, he was then sent to the more pleasant Ghain Tuffeiha Convalescent Camp at St. Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bay where the Apostle Paul had been

shipwrecked some 1900 years before.

After he recovered, Joseph Welsh was promoted to sergeant. He was sent to the Egypt, to help defend the Suez Canal, and then to the Holy Land for the invasion of Palestine.

He consequently had the life experience of spending Christmas Eve in the hills of Bethlehem before proceeding into Jerusalem on Christmas Day.

The campaign kicked off on Oct. 30th, with a three day blitz of volunteers in

malls, grocery stores and other department stores to begin collecting donations for poppies. All proceeds go to the Poppy Fund, a program that helps veterans and their families after service.

have volunteers go out and place poppy trays in stores with poppies. Usually they go back every day and check, so it’s quite an intensive volunteer duty,” said Legion member Neil St. Denys.

“It’s important that we each do something to remember our veterans, but also their families as well.

Personally, I had three uncles in World War II, and my dad was in World War II, and my grandpa was in World War I. That’s the way it was at that particular time.”

The Poppy Fund also collects monies for bursaries that are given to students across the country who compete in the poster and essay contests that are held throughout schools.

Students submit a poster, poem or essay of what Remembrance Day means to them and winners are selected at local, provincial and dominion-wide levels.

“Some of those individuals put a lot of work into the posters and essays and poems,” St. Denys said proudly.

“It is interesting to me to see how young people take meaning in Remembrance Day. For Remembrance Day, we try to send veterans out to schools for their services. We phone around and find individuals who are willing to go to the services. I’ve been to a couple, and it is surprising what the kids know and how involved they are.”

St. Denys said that Remembrance Day isn’t only for veterans of world wars, but also for veterans of more recent and current wars in the Middle East and other parts of the world.

“When you look at World War I, it’s no longer something that just happened - it’s a historical event, but families are still connected to that time. With the war in the Middle East, we have veterans that have served there as well - so it’s not just about remembering World War veterans,” he said.

He said that the poppy campaign also creates funds to support these veterans and their families.

St. Denys also said that the need for volunteers is always a challenge. He said that as they lose older veterans to nursing homes, old age and death, there is a need for young veterans to step up and take part in Legion activities. As well, members of the community have been encouraged to consider helping with the Poppy Campaign if they are able to do so.

experiences and a way to connect to the community. One such veteran who takes part in Legion activities is Winifred (Wyn) Ledieu.

“We are so lucky to live where we live and have what we have, and that is contributed to our soldiers, our airman and navy. It was men and women who gave up their lives so we could have it much better,” Ledieu said.

“My concern is mostly to make sure that children are aware of this they see everything, but don’t always know what is going on. It’s always so nice when there are services at the school but it is very important that they remember that this is a very, very special time.”

Ledieu is a World War II veteran. She said it is important to note that Nov. 11th is not so much a celebration, but a day of thoughtful remembrance.

“I’m so happy to see that people are not so much celebrating, but remembering the day. That’s important.”

Citizens are encouraged to pick up a poppy and make a donation to show their support for the veterans of the nation. As well, a musical Remembrance event will take place on Nov. 8th at Red Deer College at 2 p.m, with two Remembrance Day ceremonies occurring in the City on Nov. 11th. Flags of Remembrance on display for second year

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS Driving west towards Sylvan Lake on Hwy. 11 these days is a breathtaking sight as 256 Canada flags line the busy roadway.

The Veterans Voices of Canada Flags of Remembrance display was first raised up on Oct. 17th. They will continue to be on display until Nov. 14th in which a closing ceremony will take place at noon at HJ Cody School in Sylvan Lake.

On Hwy. 11, the flags line both the west and east bound lanes and they represent 128,000 Canadians who were killed or missing in action.

In its second year, the display on Hwy. 11 isn’t the only one. There are also displays near Ponoka, Vernon, B.C., Kingston, Ont., and Charlottetown, P.E.I. “We’re getting a lot of feedback and people commenting on how this kind of tribute is needed. That is exactly what I had

hoped it would do,” said Allan Cameron, founding executive director of Veterans Voices of Canada, who spearheaded the Flags of Remembrance project. “It is getting a lot of people talking and a lot of people thinking about Canada for one, but most importantly about our veterans. ”It’s not just about driving by those flags. Many of those flags have a hero’s name on them. A big part of this is that it’s a remembrance initiative - if we are reading those names, that is how we remember and that is how we give honour and tribute to them.”

Cameron had the idea for the project about three or four years ago and last year he decided he had to make it a reality.

“First and foremost this is a tribute and I wanted to make it a campaign for Veterans Voices of Canada as well. It’s part of Veterans Voices of Canada and it’s another aspect of our remembering.

ENTERTAINMENT Cornerstone Youth Theatre presents Beauty and the Beast

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Red Deer audiences will soon have the chance to be charmed by the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast, thanks to the talents of Cornerstone Youth Theatre.

Directed by guest director Jessica Belisle, the production features a cast of 62 students and a crew of 25 with Ceanna McKee cast as Belle and Reid Mills as the Beast. Rounding out the team are Laurette Woodward as musical director, Ashley Miller who is serving as the vocal coach and choreographer Tori Grebinski.

This particular version of the show is from Russel House Productions.

Cast and crew are thrilled with the opportunity to present this family-friendly, musical show which opens on Nov. 6th and runs through to Nov. 14th.

Evening shows run at 7 p.m. on Nov. 6th-7th, 13-14th, with matinees at 3 p.m. on Nov. 7th and Nov. 14th.

The show takes place at New Life Fellowship Church.

Belisle, who is based in Spokane, has known Cornerstone Artistic Director Stephanie Orr for many years. The chance came up for her to head north and direct the talented troupe, and she was excited for the opportunity.

She was involved in a Spokane program that was similar to Cornerstone as well.

“Stephanie was a staff member there when I was young and I grew up doing theatre there. I also knew her daughter, and we’ve kept in contact over the years.”

Currently, she’s involved with a theatre group in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and hopes to one day launch her own venture.

Orr eventually invited her to Red Deer to oversee Beauty and the Beast, and it’s not only been a hoot but also a rich learning experience as well. “It’s been going really, really well,” she said. “Good kids, good families - a really talented group.”

The classic Beauty and the Beast story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self.

But time is running out.

If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity, as they are gradually turning from humans into castle objects - a teapot, a clock, a candlestick, and much more!

Kalisha Mendonsa/ Red Deer Express As for guiding along a comparatively large cast, Belisle said it takes quite a bit of pre-planning. “We think about how we can ‘layer’ these kids in to make them look good - to make it look structured and in unison,” she explained. Musicals also lend themselves well to large casts - there is lots of room for the youth to be featured and with the right choreography, the visual results can be magical as well.

Seeing young actors truly connect with their characters is also a very fulfilling thing for a director, she said. “They’re invested in sort of an emotional way, separate from learning lines and knowing (other aspects) of the play. They’re opening up themselves to feeling things.

As to the story, even though this one isn’t the Disney version, the themes of the classic story shine through and of course resonate strongly with audiences around the world.

“It’s an endearing story,” she said. Belle decides to open up her heart and mind to the Beast, even though he isn’t the nicest of chaps to start with. “She decides to accept him and kind of befriend him and that’s a new spin on it. She still chooses to give him a chance. That’s endearing, because it goes further than most stories do.

The Elwins head to Bo’s Bar and Grill this month

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS There simply isn’t a limit on the raw creativity that resonates throughout the latest project from The Elwins, who are set to perform at Bo’s Bar and Grill Nov. 17th.

As pointed out in their bio notes, ‘If 2012’s And I Thank You got The Elwins’ metaphorical foot in the door, then their latest long-player, 2015’s Play For Keeps, is the boys blasting it wide open.’

“In a way, we didn’t want to feel like we had to tie anything to the last record,” said singer/guitarist Matthew Sweeney. “We wanted to do whatever we were feeling good about.”

Indeed. Even before releasing And I Thank You, their full-length debut, The Elwins – which also includes drummer Travis Stokl, guitarist/keyboardist Feurd and bassist Frankie Figliomeni – were one of Toronto’s emerging groups to show such undeniable promise.

Meanwhile, Play For Keeps builds on the foundation of fun pop music they established with its predecessor.

“Prior to doing any writing or recording, we talked about our previous record - what we liked and what we learned from it and from the process and where we see ourselves at now musically in terms of what is meaningful to us and what inspires us to write songs,” explained Sweeney. “So we kind of formed a vision of what we wanted the next record to sound like.”

With that in mind, they began the songwriting process. “The way we operate is that anyone can write, and we all bring our song ideas to the table. And it’s all up

for discussion.

“That helps keep things cohesive, because it has to go through that filter of everyone’s input. In addition to that, we worked with a fantastic producer by the name of Derek Hoffman.”

The guys credit Hoffman with putting a welcome modern pop sheen on the record. Meanwhile, mixing came courtesy of the dynamic duo that is Gus van Go and Werner F (Hollerado, Said The Whale). “I think something he did really well was that he brought a really great kind of pop sensibility to the record that was different from our first record - a little more ‘in your face’ and radio friendly - a means of presenting ourselves in that way.

“And even though the songs all differed in style, he helped keep things cohesive from a production standpoint, and he made sure there was a common thread among all of these different songs. We went into the studio and were totally blown away at how well he works and how musical he is and what he brings to the table.”

Taking the best bits of pop and rock music from the past five decades, The Elwins have delivered a dose of dancy bliss that appeals to virtually anyone. Cuts like You Have Me and the terrific opener Bubble are described as ‘blasts of ‘60s-inspired pop not far removed from the band’s earlier efforts’.

“We tried to take everything up to the next level, sonically speaking,” added Feurd. “We wanted to be really open and try a bunch of things we hadn’t done before.”

So Down Low clips along at a brisk pace with an irresistible charm as well, complete with a sunny, catchy chorus.

Chic Gamine includes Red Deer on current tour

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Winnipeg and Montreal based band Chic Gamine are hitting the Fratters stage on Nov. 18th.

The acclaimed band will be featuring tunes from their latest disc, Light a Match, which was released just last month.

The project marks the group’s third CD and a follow-up to their Junonominated record, City City, which was released five years ago.

Chic Gamine have been on a rich creative journey since their start in 2007. Many of the original members grew up close to each other in the Winnipeg area, explains singer Alexa Dirks. Rounding out the band are drummer Sacha Daoud, bass/guitar player Benoit Morier and singers Andrina Turenne and Annick Bremault. “They were entrenched in this very close-knit community in Winnipeg for awhile,” she explains of those early days.

“When that band split up,

they still wanted to make music and they had by then met Sacha who had been passing through Winnipeg with a different band.”

Dirks later joined after the band approached her after hearing her perform around town as well, and Morier signed on about two years ago.

Their debut CD was released in 2008 and it wasn’t long before both fans and industry took notice - the project landed them them with a 2009 Juno for best Roots Album. Their sophomore album, City City (2010), was nominated for a 2011 Juno in the same category as well.

Then came an American re-release, Closer in 2012 and in winter 2014, the Holidaythemed EP they pushed on a six-week, cross Canada run with Stuart Maclean’s Vinyl Cafe, Christmas Vol. 1.

So it’s been a while since they’ve laid down tracks for a full length new project, but as Dirks points out, the band has been working steady with touring and other commitments. But that doesn’t mean the songwriting - or

inspiration - faded even just a little bit.

That said, it’s time to celebrate another chapter with Light a Match. The tunes are indeed a pleasure to listen to, from the plucky and bold sensibilities of All Night which feature the seamlessness of the singers’ harmonies to Follow Through which again emphasizes vocal strengths of the group. Things kick into gear with the feisty title track and the charming, rhythmic and quirky Maybe I Need (Some Good Lovin’).

Where I Fall wraps things up with a nod to an attractive, ethereal, emotive and soothing feel.

Dirks said it’s a challenge - but an intriguing one - to merge the various artistic instincts of the band’s members into a relatively singular vision. To that end, the band wanted a collaborator to assist in arranging and polishing the songs.

They chose Montreal producer/engineer Sébastien Blais-Montpetit to come in, pushing performances up a notch.

For almost 10 years a few specialists have been trying to interfere with the advertising of orthodontics by general dentists. There is no state or province in North America that has prevented general dentists from providing braces, but that doesn’t stop certain people from trying. To be fair, there ARE some situations where you should probably ONLY see a specialist. If you need jaw surgery to have an ideal result, and accept the risks of doing this treatment you actually need to see two or three dental specialists plus your general dentist to complete your treatment. If you are especially particular and want to be as close to textbook perfect, then not only should you see a specialist, you should be sure you see a very fussy specialist. Not all specialists are equal.

SAD TRUTH Even specialists are not able to guarantee straight teeth will make you or your child a Hollywood star.

Another reality is while they used to think they could ‘grow lower jaws’ with orthodontic appliances the facts seem to suggest otherwise. Many young teens treated with appliances and Herbst braces simply grew out of their bad bite – and others who were ‘fixed’ were actually only posturing their jaw forward and not really improved. The good news is even if the bones of the jaws are a mismatch- typically the lower being too small to match the upper, it is not a fatal condition. Many people live to be over ninety years old with this kind of bite, but if you are concerned about the retruded profile or other effects, as an adult you may choose jaw repositioning surgery…but the sad truth is no dentist, and not even specialists can actually claim to grow a mandible more than it is programed to do by genetics. It is sometimes better to do little or nothing for a teenager when it is clear they will want jaw surgery later anyway. It is simply not wise to keep braces on for extended periods of time, waiting for the person to stop growing. As a parent you may want to do the best for your child but sometimes that means waiting.

Dental professionals tell you this, but if you don’t really understand you may be wasting your money.

Who wants to be told their child may be better off waiting and choosing jaw surgery when he/she is an adult?

Sometimes it is better to do less and here’s an example: A child was being teased about her ‘buck teeth’ which were spaced out and sticking out of her mouth even when her lips were closed. She clearly needed something done, but it was also obvious she was going to need jaw re-positioning at a much older age to improve her profile. If you watch Dr. Pol the veterinarian on television, you’ll notice his wife has a very small lower jaw. People often look better when their jaws match, but as mentioned, this cannot always be corrected as a teen. What did Dr. Zuk recommend? He suggested not doing what his friend the orthodontist recommended, and instead suggested a very inexpensive, limited orthodontic treatment. With $1999 braces the young girl’s smile would be little better and she wouldn’t be as selfconscious. Spending $7000 would not have corrected the true skeletal problem anyway.

Other situations where ‘$1999 & up braces’ may help teens & adults include mild to moderate crowding, twisting or spacing of the upper teeth- especially when you can’t afford a specialist for comprehensive or ‘full treatment’. Limited treatment often just focuses on making your smile look better and not correcting all the things you could if your budget was higher.

We already knew what we wanted, but when you are so close to the project it’s sometimes hard to be objective. And we wanted that objective ear to tell us, ‘Hey, maybe you could edit this or add that’, and bring things that we never would have really thought

of on our own.

“We also wanted someone who was going to walk alongside and not take over the project. So he was perfect - he’s so amazing to work with and to hang out with. He’s not a micro-manager; he’s really creative. He was so into our vision but was also into experimenting with new sounds and other things he thought of, too.”

For Dirks, being part of such a groundbreaking group has been an amazing

experience from the get-go.

“We’re a collective - that’s just the way that we work,” she explained. “And we’ve been together for nine years so we’ve had a lot of practice in understanding each other and the democratic process that we work under,” she said. “We all have our opinions, but it takes compromise and sometimes a small amount of sacrifice - but that’s what being in a band is all about.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Candy - all at once, or a little at a time?

I am writing about this topic because of Halloween of course, but it applies to eating well all year. Still not sure what I am talking about?

Okay, the kids get dressed as their favourite characters, or whatever they can dig out of the closet, and off they go door to door, or through the mall to say those words every kid loves to say, “Trick or Treat!”

The munchkins, or preteens or even teens arrive home with a bucket, bag or pillow case full of candy! Woo hoo! I remember fondly pouring out the pillow case onto my bed and sorting through all the booty!

It was the best and I loved every moment!

Each parent and each kid now has a decision to make - do I eat all of this at once, or do I space it out so it lasts for weeks? Good question! What is the best answer? Well, that is up to you as a responsible parent and a wise kid, but here are my thoughts.

I say go for it! Eat it all within as few days as possible, even just one day! There are several reasons for this, and certainly this is part scientific fact and partly my opinion. Here’s the thing, when you eat a ton of candy, your body will eventually defend itself and say ‘enough’ by making you sick.

McDERMOTT So there is a self limiting response to all of this – you will eat until you get sick of candy, and you won’t want any more. That is actually a good thing – get it done and over with. You see, as much as I love candy, and who wouldn’t? It releases all kinds of chemicals in our brains that are related to pleasure, which is why sugar and chocolate have endured all these years. The problem is this, it’s bad for you in so many more ways than we may realize.

Refined sugar itself (not natural sugar from fruits and veggies), as little as a teaspoon full, slows down your immune system leaving you vulnerable to colds, flus and all manner of ill (scientific fact). Refined white sugar also gets stored in adipose (fat) tissue when we consume more calories that our body needs. Add in to that, all the chemicals, flavours, food colourings and fillers – and Halloween candy is awful! Plus it will rot

your teeth out (as my mom used to say).

So why would I say to eat any of this?

I believe that candy and treats are a fun part of childhood, and Halloween is a great time of joy and imagination. So it falls into the ‘once in a while’ category which is what makes it so special and at the same time, okay.

Now, the other option for all that candy – is to ration it. Store it. Only allow yourself or your kids to have a little each day to make it last.

I disagree with that rationale – why would you want to drag out something that is bad for you? As I have said, I think it is best to eat it all up and be done with it. You will either get sick, or you will run out of candy, and either way, it’s gone, and you can get back to eating healthy food immediately. Your immune system can recover, your stomach can feel better and your hormones can return to normal after the crazy chemical overload. Rationing it out can create permanent illness, or long term issues. My wife used to work in an elementary school, and the kids were all unmanageable for a day or two after Halloween, and then it was done.

No teacher or parent wants the unruly, distracted, hyper, unfocused Halloween aftermath to last until Christmas.

As adults, this comes to play in my philosophy of a weekly or monthly ‘cheat meal’. This is how I get my clients to stay on track and have seen many of them drop 100 pounds or more. Eat well 80% of the time or more, and once in a while, eat what you want, no guilt.

Remember, it is not what you occasionally eat that determines the state of your health, rather, it is what you consistently and constantly feed your body that creates your health, or lack of it. So when I am having a cheat meal – I buy a small ice cream or desert, enough for one meal. I eat it, enjoy it, and then it is gone. Tomorrow, when I open the fridge – only good food exists, so that is what I eat. Simple.

Same thing with Halloween candy – eat it, and get it done with. Then look forward to Christmas. Our three and a half year old loved his candy Saturday night and Sunday, never even asked about it and it was gone.

He was back to eating healthy, as were we.

Does Justin Trudeau wear short or long pants?

Congratulations to Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister Elect of Canada. He’s young, handsome, carries a famous name, demonstrated he has an ear for what the public is clamoring for, and now has the most vital weapon of all, power. But will he deny democracy to the majority of Canadians who elected him?

Or ignore the will of the Supreme Court of Canada? Soon we will know whether Trudeau wears knickers or long pants.

Trudeau, in his victory speech, fired a salvo when he uttered the words Abraham Lincoln delivered on the eve of the U.S. Civil War. Lincoln worried that leaders needed to appeal to the, “Better angels of our nature.”

But will Trudeau, on the contrary, use devilish political tactics that appeal to a vocal minority, the very thing he allegedly opposes?

In the largest survey of its kind in Canada to determine if Canadians should be granted the constitutional right to assisted death, the result was overwhelming. Eighty percent of those who said they were Christians and 83% of Catholics believe that doctors should be permitted to help terminally ill patients end their lives.

Equally important, 57% of those surveyed said they had watched someone suffer a terrible death. Of this group, 85% supported assisted dying. And 85% of disabled people were in favour of assisted death. A lawyer citing these statistics would convince a jury the case is closed.

So would Trudeau’sm “Better angels of our nature.”

I have a deep, personal interest in this matter, so I hope Trudeau’s angels win the day. Years ago, the Gifford-Jones Foundation donated $500,000 to the University of Toronto Medical School to establish the W. Gifford-Jones Professorship in Pain Control and Palliative care. In the interim, more doctors have been trained to relieve suffering. But I and the angels know that there comes a time when even the best of palliative care cannot ease all agony.

In February, 2015, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that assisted death should be an option for those grievously and terminally ill and who wished to end their

So what did the Harper government do?

The consulting panel for implementation was stacked with members who oppose assisted death. It’s like putting the fox in charge of the hens, an inhumane despicable act for those crying out for help to end their suffering.

Good sense should tell Trudeau that the majority of those who elected him have already given him an overpowering mandate to allow assisted death. And that there is no need to waste millions of dollars of tax payers dollars on more time-consuming surveys while people die in misery.

Hopefully, Trudeau and his good angels will also realize that surveys reveal a highly vocal minority, paid administrators (who don’t want to lose their jobs), who continue to shout to High Heaven that the devil will take over and innocent people will be killed by overzealous physicians. What a lie, when the majority of doctors, to their eternal shame, have declared they oppose assisted death. Their role is to end suffering.

So, will the Prime Minister Elect begin the day by putting on short knickers or long pants? If it’s long pants, he’ll quickly disband Harper’s fox-laden committee, and tell his fellow parliamentarians to immediately enact the law allowing assisted death. This would bring Canada into line with the many nations who allow this humanitarian act.

Studies from the United States and other countries that allow assisted death show that relatively few with terminal illness ask for it. But it is comforting to know it’s available.

I have stated repeatedly that those who oppose assisted death have every right to end or prolong their lives in whatever way they wish. A study should be done to see how many cry for help when excruciating pain strikes.

But I have always believed it irrational and inhumane to allow human suffering when none of us would allow a beloved dog to die in agony. It’s high time for

Trudeau and his good angels to end this great injustice.

New captain selected for the Red Deer Rebels

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS The Red Deer Rebels are turning to a familiar face to lead the team this season.

Rebels veteran Wyatt Johnson was named the new captain of the team by Head Coach and General Manager Brent Sutter on Oct. 15th, taking over for former captain Conner Bleackley, who will continue to serve as an alternate captain this season.

The 20-year-old forward from Saskatoon is no stranger to the leadership role, as he donned the ‘C’ for two months last season when Bleackley went down with an injury, and earlier in the season when Bleackley was at the Colorado Avalanche’s development camp.

“It’s a good feeling but at the same time not much has really changed. Obviously a little added responsibility but not that much,” said Johnson during an interview ahead of his team’s Sunday night matchup in Medicine Hat, which they won 6-5 in the shootout.

Johnson has been a steady hand in the Rebels’ lineup for the past three seasons.

The veteran forward has turned in three straight 20-point-plus seasons thus far. He notched a career-high 25 goals and 29 assists for a total of 54 points and had a plus 21 plus-minus rating last year.

Johnson had a bit of a slow start to this season.

He tallied just one assist through the first 10 games of the season. But that all changed after the Saskatoon native played his first game as captain. Johnson picked up a goal and two assists for three points in that game against the Vancouver Giants. But he wasn’t done yet.

The Rebels’ next game was a battle against the Saskatoon Blades at the Centrium. At the time, the Rebs were still undefeated on their home turf and that night would be no different. Johnson led the charge for the home team as he recorded his first hat trick of the season and added an assist for a fourpoint evening. His team added another four goals on the way to a 7-1 rout of the Blades.

“It’s nice to start getting on the score sheet.

The first 10 games didn’t go as we wanted so it’s nice to start contributing and it’s always nice to get a win,” Johnson commented during a post-game press conference.

Since that game, the Anaheim Ducks prospect has picked up four more points to bring his total up to 12, good for the third spot on the team in scoring.

Despite his individual success in the past

couple of weeks, though, Johnson maintains a team-first mentality.

“For me the biggest thing is whether your team is winning or not,” he said when asked whether he pays attention to his stats.

And the veteran player is always quick to credit his teammates for the team’s success.

“I feel like I lead pretty well, but at the same time we have a really good group. We have an older group with lots of character guys. (Being captain) is a huge honour but we have at least 10 guys who could be captain so it’s pretty easy to lead,” he said.

Johnson’s hockey career started early in life. As a young kid growing up in Regina, he whiled away countless hours on the rink in his family’s backyard.

“I have to credit my parents for getting me into it when I was younger.”

While most hockey players start playing the game competitively when they’re four years old, Johnson didn’t lace up his skates in organized hockey until he was six.

“I started a little later than most kids but I loved it as soon as I put on skates,” he said.

After his family moved to Saskatoon when he was 13, Johnson started to seriously pursue his hockey career. He played his first two seasons of AA hockey in Bantam with the Saskatoon Outlaws and Saskatoon Generals.

Going undrafted in the 2010 Bantam Draft, Johnson joined the Midget AA Saskatoon Spartans for his first season of Midget hockey, and earned his way onto the Midget AAA team the very next year.

“I played AAA when I was 16 for the Saskatoon Blazers and played for a couple of summer teams after that,” he remembered.

Johnson posted 14 goals and 31 assists for the Blazers that year.

But he didn’t really consider a stint in ‘the Dub’ viable until he was listed by the Medicine Hat Tigers at 15 years old.

“I always wanted to growing up. But at that point was when I really realized that I had a shot at making it.”

When asked how he would describe himself as a player, Johnson said he prefers to think of himself as a hard-working two-way player that can be tough to play against.

“Hopefully opponents would say that about me,” he said, adding that he tries to focus on doing the little things right.

Johnson, who is now in his final year of WHL hockey, says he has enjoyed his time as a Red Deer Rebel.

“It’s been unreal. The City and the organization are just so first-class. I absolutely love EL CAPITAN - Wyatt Johnson was named the new captain of the Red Deer Rebels last month. Johnson has been a steady presence in the Rebels’ line-up for the past four years. it in Red Deer.”

Winter is coming in Central Alberta. The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting colder, and football season is starting to draw close to its conclusion.

Last weekend was the semi-final matchups for both the Central Alberta High School Football League and the Central Alberta Bantam Football League. All of the teams from Red Deer were in action last weekend. Here’s a rundown of what happened:

HIGH SCHOOL The Hunting Hills Lighting continued to show why they are the first place team in the Central Alberta High School League with a win over the Lacombe Composite High School Rams last Thursday night. The Lightning have been very strong throughout the season, posting a perfect 8-0 record. They rolled past a struggling Rams squad 47-7, scoring 30 points in the second half to clinch a spot in the finals. They also secured a place in the Alberta Football Tier II Provincials. Lacombe finished the season with an 0-8 record.

The Notre Dame Cougars earned themselves a birth in the final local matchup of the season thanks to a 29-7 victory over the Lindsay Thurber Raiders at Great Chief Park on Friday.

The Cougars posted a 6-2 record this season to earn themselves an eighth place ranking among Tier I teams in Alberta. With the win the Cougars clinched a birth in the Tier I Alberta Football League Provincials.

THE FINAL The Central Alberta High School Football League final will be held on Saturday at Great Chief Park in Red Deer between the Hunting Hills Lightning and the Notre Dame Cougars.

While the undefeated Lightning are favoured going into the Saturday night game, the Cougars have had a strong showing this season.

They’ve only lost twice and have proven that they can compete at a very high level. But in order to claim the league championship, they’ll have to get past a Hunting Hills team that has handed them their only two losses of the season.

BANTAM The Hunting Hills Jr. Lightning clinched themselves a spot in the Central Alberta Bantam Football Association Tier II final with a resounding 38-6 win over the Innisfail Cyclones

“We just have a bunch of dedicated athletes that bought in this year to the program. They just work hard and believe in the team atmosphere,” said Lightning Head Coach Josh Sorensen after the game.

Innisfail came into the game with a 3-2 record and sat second in the South division.

The Lindsay Thurber Jr. Raiders scraped into the final with a 16-14 win over the Strathmore Badgers in what may have been the most tightly contested game of the weekend. Lindsay Thurber came into the game in second in the North division with a 4-1-1 record. They posted easily the best points differential in the division with plus-14o and only allowed 82 points to be scored on them throughout the season.

Strathmore, on the other hand, came into the game undefeated at 5-0 and had an even

better points differential of plus 164. They allowed only 42 points over the course of their five wins. The Raiders stayed strong, though, and came away with a hard-fought win to advance to the final.

THE FINAL On paper this is easily one of the most interesting matchups of the weekend. On one side are the 6-1 Hunting Hills Jr. Lightning. On the other, the Lindsay Thurber Jr. Raiders, who

are coming off a huge upset of the undefeated Strathmore Badgers. The winner earns a shot at competing in the Alberta Bowl at this year’s Football Alberta Provincials. It’s worth noting that the Raiders were the only team that beat Hunting Hills during regular season play, though Hunting Hills, according to the coach, was missing several key players at the time.

The final will run on Saturday morning at Great Chief Park. Kick off is at 11 a.m. and it promises to be a wild game.

Discussing recent rule changes in the NHL Last season, the NHL made two major rule changes at the annual owner’s meeting in Pebble Beach. The first was the implementation of 3-on-3 overtime as the tiebreaker for the league, which I have previously said is an excellent idea that works well in practice. The second change was the addition of a coach’s challenge for goaltender interference. In theory this is a progressive rule change that would allow referees a second look at close

CORMIER plays in front of the net that lead to a goal being scored. As someone who has worked as a referee, I can attest to how difficult calling goalie interference can be. Things happen so fast in front of the net that

it is difficult to tell exactly what happened. Having a second chance to look at a play and revise a call would be a benefit.

Not only that, it allows coaches the opportunity to legally question the ruling of an on-ice official. While it may seem like that would take away some of the authority a referee has on the ice, the fact is most coaches and officials care about getting the call right.

So in theory, from the standpoint of a coach, official and spectator, the new

rule makes a lot of sense.

The problem arises when you put the rule into practice. In many cases battles in front of the net will result in some form of contact between an offensive player and the defending team’s goalie. This is especially prevalent when the goalie is out of the crease to try and cut down the angle of a shooter and a player on the offensive team is in front of the net trying to set up a screen.

es of incidental contact go. The battle between a screen and a goaltender is a natural part of the game of hockey and, therefore, shouldn’t be penalized.

It’s one of those calls that officials, in general, have historically enforced the spirit of the rule rather than the letter of the law.

But under the new video review rules it’s the letter of the law that is enforced, meaning that even the slightest contact with the goalie in the crease can result in a goal being waved off.

This is a bad thing for the NHL. The coach’s challenge will mean that less goals are scored, which the NHL has been trying to avoid. It will mean more delays during the game while the referees and the Toronto Video Room review the call, and, perhaps

most worryingly, the new rules will result in less battles and traffic in front of the net.

All three of these things result in a little bit less entertainment value in sitting through a game, and with all of the changes that the league has been implementing over the past couple of years to improve that aspect of the game, I just don’t get why they would enact a rule that seems to go against that core principle.

Now, I’m not saying goalies should be fair game.

I’m just saying that if the NHL wants to put a rule like this into play, they have make sure they are only overturning calls when the goalie is interfered with and is deliberately physically prevented from getting in front of the puck. zcormier@reddeerexpress.com

In my years as a designer I have worked with clients who are wanting to design for varied reasons. Many people enjoy the process and the challenges of designing and decorating a home while others are wanting to increase property value, impress friends and neighbours and sometimes just make themselves feel better.

Is buying a home in the winter a good idea?

Consider this - it’s a cold winter day and you’ve just sat down with a mortgage professional to figure out how much house you can afford. You’ve determined that your finances are in order and you’re ready to start looking for a home.

You’ve heard that spring is the best season for buying and selling real estate.

Does that mean you’ll need to put your search on hold until the tulips start to bloom?

“If you’ve worked out what you can afford and you’re ready for the home buying process, then shopping for real estate can happen at any time of year,” said Pat Verge, president of the Ontario Real Estate Association.

“While spring and fall are busier times for real estate sales, a serious home buyer should be looking out for potential homes as long as they’re ready to make a purchase. It can

sometimes take many months to find the right property.”

If you are planning to shop for real estate during the winter, these are a few things to bear in mind: Supply - there may be fewer homes to choose from, but of the homes

available for sale you may have less competition to deal with when making an offer.

Weather - the homes you visit may already be covered with snow which may hide exterior defects; ask to see photographs of the home taken earlier in the

year and rely on a home inspector to tell you about any potential faults.
