Chris Hall is young, healthy and physically fit, so when the Port Alberni teacher found out he had cancer, it came as a big surprise. Luckily for Hall, his diagnosis of leukemia was detected early, and although he is currently on a

long road to recovery, his outlook remains positive.

At 46, the E.J. Dunn Elementary School teacher is active in sports, regularly cycles to work and enjoys growing organic food at home with his family. It was during a night out with friends that reminded him to think

of his own health.

“He was playing poker with a bunch of guys and they started talking about physical exams,” said Chris’ wife Jessica.

“He realized he hadn’t had one in about 20 years and when he came home he felt he should go get it done.”

It was his bloodwork

that raised questions.

“It was a big shock,” Jessica said. “It was five weeks from his blood test to getting the call from the oncologist. Then 24 hours later, he was admitted to Vancouver General.”

Jessica said he was never sick nor showed any signs of illness.

“Canada’s Worst Driver” celebrated its 10th birthday at the end of September, and now it’s back for an 11th season, premiering Monday, Oct. 26, on Discovery. While the bad drivers cycle in and out, one man has been with the show since the beginning. Andrew Younghusband is back behind the wheel as host of the hit auto-education show, and he says, “We’re doing every challenge faster than we’ve ever done it before.”

“He went to spin class right up until the day before we left for Vancouver General Hospital,” she said.

“He figured if he was going to have to stay there he might as well get it in as much as he could.”

As soon as the family’s friends heard the news, they rallied support by providing meals, housekeeping and fundraisers.

Coworkers in the school district are currently organizing a community dance, the Tour de Chris, to help with growing expenses.

Planned for the Hansen Hall on Nov. 14, it will include a silent auction and photo booth.

In the next two to three months he is expected to be on consolidation (post-remission) therapy, followed by further chemotherapy and radiation, with the hope of a bone marrow transplant in early January.

“They are currently trying to find an unrelated donor,” Jessica said.

Chris was told his stay in Vancouver would likely be for the entire school year so the family was forced to quickly adjust their lives. Jessica too, is a teacher and has taken an undetermined leave of absence from her position at Alberni Elementary.

Leading the masses to water ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: | Port Alberni’s abundance of water is its greatest asset, according to the results of a branding committee survey.

What does Port Alberni have to offer?

And how does a visitor get converted to a resident? That’s what the city’s branding committee is trying to figure out, said economic development manager Pat Deakin.

“What we’re doing at the moment is an asset inventory,” said Deakin.

Following a survey of 943 Alberni Valley residents completed this summer, Deakin and his branding committee are focusing on water as the region’s primary attraction.

“We’ve been slowly gathering all the information we can about water; it’s used for agriculture, it’s used for industry, it’s used for transportation, it’s used for recreation...”

life, Deakin’s target market of millennials (people aged 20–40) means the committee is focused on two uses in particular: drinking water and recreation.

The committee’s focus on the former is in part led by the past summer’s drought conditions.

“Central Vancouver Island was perhaps

hardest hit with restrictions but of the central Vancouver Island communities, Port Alberni was best off,” said Deakin.

“We certainly were conscientious in our use of water but we weren’t as much at risk as some communities.”

“We believe that it’s an opportunity to market not only the community’s abundance of drinking water but the quality of it,” said Deakin, adding that the strategy was deemed

Inventorying Port Alberni’s assets gives the committee an opportunity to figure out how to do one very important thing, said Deakin.

“There’s an opportunity to convert a visitor to a resident when they have experienced something here that they like,” said Deakin.

The idea, he added, is to have the sort of tourist experience in the Alberni Valley that those visitors— even the ones simply passing through on their way to the West Coast—fall in love and choose to relocate to Port Alberni permanently.

As the rivers and lakes to the east of us freeze up, all the waterfowl, geese, and other waterbirds migrate to areas where there is reliably open water.

Many do not migrate southwards, but rather westwards or southwest to the coast.

This migration brings predatory birds with it, attracted by the abundance of waterbirds along the coast. Falcons, eagles and hawks also patrol

Again, it is an estuary and so there is some richness associate with the area. It is also further down the inlet so that the ocean water is saltier than at the Port Alberni harbour. There, one is liable to see a few species that one rarely sees at the harbour.

But the forests are dark, quiet and a little forbidding.

But I choose a different activity: bird watching, or birding.

You get out in the fresh air. You only go out on dry days with not a lot of wind and you find open areas to look in, not the dark empty rainforest.

Contrary to most of Canada east of the Rockies and the northern part of the province, birdwatching in the winter can be quite productive.

In eastern Canada the number of species available to be seen averages between 20 and 60 at this time of year. But here that number is closer to 150. And many of them are easily seen

Kackaamin Family Development Centre on Beaver Creek Road is one of 18 recipients of Canada Post Community Foundation grants in B.C. this year.

Representatives from the Port Alberni Canada Post depot on Johnston Road presented a cheque for $14,500 to the family centre this month.

Sadie Greenaway said the donation will be a great benefit to families using Kackaamin substance abuse treatment centre.

“The money will go to the building of playground equipment because we are a family centre,” she said.

Kackaamin Family Centre opened in the former Beaver Creek Elementary School in 2009, having moved from a previous location in Tofino.

The former school has been remodeled and 12 family units were built in behind the facility

“It’s mostly for First Nations families. It’s a treatment centre,” Greenaway said.

The Canada Post grant program is nationwide, said Brad Woods, local area superintendent. “Once a year for the month of October we

do a drive for donations for our community foundation,” he said.

“Money collected in B.C. stays in B.C. “We had a really good year.”

Over the past seven years the foundation has granted more than $12 million to almost 250 organizations across Canada.

The three-stage playground system, designed for toddlers, children and youth of the families who attend the substance abuse treatment program at Kackaamin, will be built by someone here in the Alberni Valley. Work will begin next spring.

But it’s not just the Alberni Valley and our harbour where you can find lots of easy waterfowl. The shoreline along the east side of Vancouver island is just as good. In fact, in some ways better in that there is more open water habitat and birds that prefer saltier water than the brackish confines of the Alberni Inlet.

There you will find a greater variety of scoters, mergansers and alcids (I’ll let you guys look them up!).

A winter visit to this coast is well worth it if you have time on Tuesdays too. Because this is when the Tuesday birders do their thing. Contact the Backyard Wild Bird and Nature Store in Nanaimo (http:// thebirdstore.blogspot.ca/) to see where the next excursion is.

It’s free and quite popular, with at least 15 people every week.

Adequate and reasonable food should not be a gift from charities, as it is a human right set out in the United Nations Declaration (Article 25).

It’s been over eight years since the welfare rate in BC has been increased.

British Columbia is the only province in Canada without a Poverty Reduction Plan. Poverty is a result of political decisions about priorities.

n a culture literally surrounded by food, it doesn’t seem possible that there would be so many people experiencing daily hunger pangs due to lack of access to food. In our town of Port Alberni, 18.5 per cent of families live in poverty.

An individual receiving an average welfare cheque of $610 has $21 per week, or $3 a day for food. Hence, there are far too many children who have drastically altered future opportunities, health outcomes, hopes and dreams.

Approximately 30 per cent of food bank users are children.

Many kids are living with parents who are the working poor, and these children will grow up with increased risks of depression, diabetes, asthma and impaired immune function due to household food insecurity.

Keeping the issue in the public’s eye helps to pressure leaders of the day and government to step up to end the need for food banks and charities and to provide this basic human right.

If the government increased welfare rates, this would reduce the need for society’s reliance on food banks to feed the impoverished.

The Cost of Eating Report, which is published annually by Dietitians of Canada indicates that welfare rates fall short by over half the amount of money needed for purchase of healthy,

The B.C. government has made licence plates mandatory for quads, dirt bikes and other off-road vehicles starting Nov. 1, requiring helmets and restricting use by children under 16.

The B.C. legislation imposes a $230 fine for driving an unlicensed off-road vehicle, and a $368 fine for careless operation. For some offences under the Off-Road Vehicle Act related to reckless use or environmental damage, penalties can go as high as a $5,000 fine and six months in jail.

Windsong School of Healing was purchased by Lori and Todd MacLeod in 2009 and this local couple have seen students from as far away as Japan and India, to say nothing of the many local residents who have passed through their doors.
