UNBC ranked number one by Maclean’s The University of Northern British Columbia is the top university of its size in the country according to annual rankings released today by Maclean’s magazine.

For the first time ever, UNBC is ranked No. 1 in the Primarily Undergraduate category that includes 19 universities.

“This recognition from Maclean’s only supports what the residents of Northern B.C. already know - that UNBC provides a first-rate education and a foundation for the development of the next generation of leaders for

our region, our province and our country,” UNBC President Dr. Daniel Weeks said.

“The dedication of our faculty and staff, the achievements of our students and alumni, and the generosity of our donors all contributed to this tremendous accomplishment.”

UNBC finished in the top five in seven different categories including student awards, total research dollars, library acquisitions, student/faculty ratio, faculty awards, operating budget per full-time student, and library expenses.

This year, Maclean’s added a student satisfaction survey, and strong support from UNBC students figured significantly in the outcome. UNBC students gave the University high marks in mental health services, extra-curricular activities and the quality of course instructors.

“As a graduate of UNBC, I recognize the value of a UNBC education, and can echo the sentiment of our current students that pushed us to the top of the national rankings,” UNBC Board of Governors Chair Ryan Matheson said.

“On behalf of the Board

of Governors, I offer sincere congratulations to the entire UNBC community as well as its supporters and champions.”

Trent University placed second in the undergraduate rankings and the University of Lethbridge placed third.

Simon Fraser University retained top spot in the Comprehensive category, followed by Waterloo and Victoria. McGill placed first in the Medical Doctoral category, followed by Toronto and UBC. UNBC had been a runnerup three times in the past, placing second in 2014, 2012 and 2008.

Topham trial Arthur Topham’s trial in Supreme court continues this week with crown questioning lead investigator Cst. Terry Wilson on content within Topham’s website in question, www.radicalpress. com. Thursday Topham’s lawyer intended to cross examine Wilson.

Don’t Forget

Lions Society seek input on senior housing project

The Quesnel Lions Housing Society (QLHS) has formally engaged with the City of Quesnel to rezone land for its affordable housing project for seniors: the Lions House. An important part of that work is additional consultation with the community, beginning with an open house Nov. 3 at the Tower Inn from 5pm to 8pm.

“Community outreach, including the neighbourhood, started in 2013,” said Mitchell Vik, QLHS president.

“Now that we’re in the formal rezoning process, several more steps will be undertaken, including an open house.”

The open house is a “drop-in” opportunity to see preliminary plans and give QLHS reps a chance to hear ideas and concerns about the project. No formal presentation is planned, so the public can visit any time between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

years. To proceed, the project is seeking approval from the City for several changes to existing land use.

The key changes would allow a four story building, reduced on-site parking requirements, and higher density (the number of apartments on the lot). More information on the project can be found at www. qlionshousing.ca.

“To be economically viable, we obviously need to generate enough rent income to pay the mortgage,”Vik said.

“To get there, we need two things: four stories so we can get to 30 units, and 10 to 15 ‘market rent’ units for seniors who can afford it.”

Vik said that the QLHS has conducted research showing

conclusively that seniors’ housing developments require much less parking than do conventional housing developments.

Many jurisdictions allow one parking stall for every three units for seniors projects, especially affordable housing.

Lions House proposes 11 stalls, which is slightly more than that.

“Since the building wouldn’t host significant events, there will only be a few days per year, like Mothers’ Day, that create much parking demand,” he added.

QLHS has been proactive on the parking issue, and offers to enter an agreement with the City that would effectively prohibit most tenants from owning a vehicle.

“We don’t expect limitation on vehicle ownership to be an issue,” Vike said.

“The Lions House would be located where residents can walk, scooter or take transit to most places they need to go, and we expect demand

for these apartments to be much higher than we can supply.

Even the market rent units will be mainly rented by seniors aging in place, gradually getting rid of their cars.”

The more nongovernment money raised, the better chance the project will have to obtain government financing.

“The main fundraising work now is the ‘Buy a brick’ campaign,” Vik said.

“That campaign continues to go very well, and offers a chance for individuals, families and businesses to support the project and receive a permanent recognition of their support in the new building.”

The QLHS was launched by the Quesnel Lions Club in 2012 after the Lions determined that more affordable housing for seniors is an important need for Quesnel. The QLHS is a separate society established to fill that need.

Nancy Poulk Clouston

of Quesnel, BC quietly passed away Friday, Oct 23 2015 at the age of 83.

Nancy Adeline Tellman was born March 7, 1932, the sixth and youngest daughter of Vern and Alma Tellman of Lake City, Minnesota. It was the spring of the worst year of the Great Depression, but she was a sparkling child, with a stout constitution and joyful spirit that would carry her and those she loved for the rest of her life. So how can you sum up a life? How can you condense the experiences earned growing from sparkling child to young Army wife, from working mother to seasoned rancher? How can you sum up all of the little things that collect over a journey that stretches from Minnesota to California, across the Texas panhandle and the Colorado high country, to the pristine wilderness of the British Columbia Cariboo? Those who knew her, whether by her love of music, her winning smile, the hats she so fondly wore, or her books and poetry, know that you can’t.

Nancy remains a much loved member of the Quesnel community and will be greatly missed. She is survived by three sisters, six children, seven grandchildren, seven greatgrandchildren, countless friends, and her dog.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Quesnel and District Hospice Palliative Association, to whom we owe a special debt of gratitude, or the BC Cancer Foundation.

Heartfelt thanks to Drs. Smit, Jascobsen, Appleby and Leeuwner, the staff of Quesnel Home Care Nursing, Fraserview Pharmacy and the Quesnel and Prince George Hospitals.

A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held in Quesnel, details will follow.

SMITH, JOHN GORDON

December 4, 1965 to October 22, 2015

Beloved son of Margaret and Angus Smith. Survived by his loving mother, Margaret, and sister, Marion Vennard (Mark) of Penticton, grandmother June Ferguson of Victoria, nephew Geoffrey, and aunts and uncles.

Predeceased by his father, Angus, in 2011.

John was born in Quesnel, spent several years at Tranquille, Kamloops, and returned home to Quesnel. He lived in a home shared with his friend, Clayton. Over the years, he had many wonderful caregivers, among them Dennis Beeman, Linda and Ray Wesselink, and currently Nenita and Darwin Willison.

John had a happy disposition.

A gentle giant, he loved people, time outdoors, swimming, food ... especially mom’s baking ... and working at Prima.

John passed away following cancer surgery.

ROY ZERKE of Hixon, B.C. passed away peacefully at Prince George Hospice House on Tuesday October 20, 2015 at the age of 73, after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Roy was born on November 29, 1941 in Loon Lake Saskatchewan.

He lived in Quesnel for 37 years before moving to Hixon in 2004 to his farm that he loved so dearly.

He will be so deeply missed by his loving wife Marie, who will forever be the love of his life. He has left behind many family members and friends who Roy continually entertained with his sense of humor and endless stories.

Roy was predeceased by his Mother Mable, Father Alfred, sister Verna and brother Raymond Zerke.

Family and friends are invited to Celebrate Roy’s life on Nov. 6, 2015 at 4:00 at the Seniors hall in Prince George, located on the corner of 4th and Brunswick.

The Celebration of Life will close with Roy’s favorite local bands Country Calibre and Caribou Thunder.

Three businesses broken into overnight

During the overnight hours of Wednesday, October 21 to Thursday, October 22 three local businesses located on the 1200

block of Chew Street in Quesnel were broken into.

Among some of the items stolen were laptops, Ipads, and a small amount

of money.

Police are asking for the public’s assistance in solving these three break ins.

Weather windfall for U.S. power exports A warm winter and a dry spring and summer combined to produce a big jump in BC Hydro power exports this year.

Electricity exports to the U.S. jumped by 73 per cent in the first eight months of 2015 compared to the same period last year, according to export data from Statistics Canada.

River reservoirs that their combined volume reached record highs by the end of March 2015. That allowed for more generation from Mica dam on the Columbia River, which recently had a fifth and sixth turbine added to bring it up to maximum design capacity.

“These exports also supported the management of the obligations under the Columbia River Treaty, which provide for increased releases of water from the Canadian Columbia basin when the U.S. basin finds itself in severe drought conditions, as it did in the spring and summer

of 2015,” said BC Hydro spokesperson Simi Heer.

“Ultimately, the increased release meant additional generation at Mica, which resulted in more energy available for export.”

The Columbia River Treaty was signed by Canada and the U.S. in 1964, and its flood control mandate is set to expire in 2024. Energy Minister Bill Bennett has argued that the treaty should be renewed with an increased annual payment from the U.S., to reflect the value of controlling the river on the Canadian side for flood control and irrigation for

The Quesnel Lions Housing Society (QLHS) proposes to build a 30 unit, four story apartment building on the vacant lot at the corner of McNaughton Ave. and Reid St. in north Quesnel (please see the location map below).

The purpose of the open house is to encourage interested community members to review the preliminary plans for the project and provide feedback to QLHS reps. The proposed development would provide affordable housing for seniors. The increase in electricity sales was a bright spot for B.C. exports, the value of which fell 22.2 per cent from January to August, due mainly to falling natural gas prices.

Electricity prices also fell during that period, so the 73 per cent increase in exports resulted in only a 32.2 per cent increase in value. Decreases in gas and electricity prices are related to greatly increased shale gas production in the U.S., which is used for power production as well as heating fuel.

rime Minister-elect Justin Trudeau has vowed to have an equal gender split in his cabinet, to be announced next week.

As expected, not everyone was thrilled with Trudeau’s decision to create an even split in his cabinet.

On social media, some criticized him, pointing out that it may be irresponsible to not install the best candidate for each post.

Historically, as female political veterans can attest, that hasn’t always happened as the old boys’ network has tended to dominate.

The numbers from last week’s federal election were moderately encouraging. Eighty-eight women were elected, or 26 per cent of the total of 338 seats.

While that’s 12 more female voices in the house – representing about 40 per cent of the 30 new ridings – it’s barely higher than the 25 per cent in the previous Parliament.

Nonetheless, it was good to see more women running. Among the big three parties, the NDP had the closest to a gender split. Of its 338 candidates, 146 (43.2 per cent) were women, and 18 of its elected MPs (40.9 per cent) are female. The Liberals will have the most women, 50, in Parliament, or roughly 27 per cent of their total of 184 MPs. The Conservatives lagged well behind, with just 17.2 per cent of its 99 seats (17 MPs) to be held by women.

Maybe she’s born with it When I graduated high school I was voted “Most Casual” by the year book commitee and labeled as such in the school’s hard covered annual. I took that as a more polite way to describe “Biggest Slob.”

I never wore a stitch of make up or learned how to style my hair in my youth.

I wanted to, but after a few failed attempts at improving my appearance with my mom’s cosmetics and plastic hair rollers I gave up. My typical look in high school consisted of a pair of bike leggings, an unflattering over sized t-shirt or hoodie and my hair pulled back in a messy ponytail. A fashion plate I was not.

The opposite of that, my daughter seemed born with a sense of style. Even as a toddler she was objecting to certain outfits and pulling out ones she prefered from her dresser. As she got older that interest in clothing grew and she soon became enthralled with beauty products as well. She and her friends would spend hours polishing their nails, applying make-up, styling their hair and putting together ensembles. They’d host fashion shows, strutting up and down our hallway in my high heels while

On A Brighter Note I took pictures of their different creations. They’d also play “beauty salon” alternating between stylist and customer.

I’ve sat in Daisy’s make up chair on many occassions over the years and with the exception of the times when she was three when I’d end up with my lips outlined like a clown, too much blush on my cheeks and bright pink nail polish up to my knuckles, I’d usually end up looking quite presentable.

Now that she’s 12 her delight in makeup and hair has intensified. I came home last week and the closet in her bedroom that I’d converted into a homework nook with a desk had been modified to a make-up station reminiscent of what’s seen in the cosmetics section of a department store.

She’d moved all her stationary supplies to a hutch

unfamiliar notion as I have been puzzled and annoyed by the seeming assumption that the natural faces of women aren’t good enough and require face paint in order to look presentable.

Over the years I’ve lightened up about that. Daisy’s innate love for beautifying transcends any irritation I have with the multi billion dollar cosmetic industy, and I have come to regard it more as an art form that holds a great deal of entertainment value for my daughter and her friends and millions of others.

Daisy’s posse say they don’t feel it’s necessary to wear make-up and some are often seen without it.

They’re all smart, creative individuals involved in competitve activities such as fastball, gymnasitcs, soccer, dance, and school sports. I don’t see the harm in them having fun with make-up as long as it’s appropriate outside the home. In our house they can do whatever they want with their appearance.

The freedom of creative expression is good, even if it means choosing to look like the biggest slob.

inside her room and set up her desk with her hair tools, beauty products, and a Hollywood free standing mirror she’d received as a present.

“I never do my homework in here anyway,” she explained. “This makes more sense since I like to sit while I’m putting on my face and there’s no room to do that in my little bathroom.”

Putting on her face means different things at different times. In the morning before school it’s just mascara, eyebrow shaping and clear chapstick. After scool or on the weekend it could be many different looks as she and her friends experiment with a variety of techniques and appearances they’ve learned from YouTube. For years she’s wanted to be a make-up artist and she’s got a talent and interest for it that I don’t.

It’s gotten to the point that if I wanted to go to an event with an elegant evening look I would definitely ask for her assistance. I tried doing my own “smoky eyes” once many years ago and ended up looking like a raccoon.

An old friend recently crticized my concession of such a “superficial pursuit that sexualized and demeaned all females.” That wasn’t an

to punish taxpayers; they have already taken “hits” themselves.

1) You’ve heard it said we have become “a throw-away society” ... a spoiled lot of people who can afford to re-place items rather than try to repair or “make-do”.

At 74, I clearly see the difference from the times I have lived through in which money was not as easily got.

2) Also, at 74-years-old, I’m very into recycling (as promoted by today’s

society, AND at our landfill) for the benefit of future generations.

Re-cycling (paper, plastic, tins/metal, etc.) cuts a person’s so-called garbage amount by far more than half... always.

I have also seen people’s garbage containers “bursting open”, but because of non-flattened cardboard boxes, discarding of an old vacuum cleaner, etc. ... all of which should be recycled through MMBC’s recycling pick-up (if you

are privileged to have that service) or disposed of in a proper manner; those things do not belong in our landfill.

3) We have become ‘a spoiled society’ in which we expect everything to be done for us... for “nothing” if possible, even by our city.

After living with only one or two in a house for many, many years – and also being responsible to recycle what I can – I am not able to fill even one kitchen catcher bag

per week with what I call garbage... never mind a large city garbage container! (Mind you, I re-use zip-loc bags from purchases of frozen fruit, etc. to keep fruit, vegetable and meat/ cooking scraps – even coffee grounds, so my under-the-sink garbage container is not wet, does not smell or attract flies, etc.

Hence, if I were counting on the city picking up my garbage, I could easily wait two

weeks or more without problems.

So, is your glass/ garbage container half full or half empty?

I’m just thankful our City and elected representatives are now “the type” to admit openly and honestly (we’ve heard those words for years) that we ALL have to help reduce costs.

Take a good look: this is reality... not just “them punishing the taxpayers”.

The night Alex lost half his friends and found out crime doesn’t pay KYLE CHENG Quesnel, B.C. I shouldn’t go along; my friends thought we should loot a rich person’s closed mansion.

By the way my name is Alex. I already told them we are going to get caught, but their stubborn, all 11 of them.

We’ll go tomorrow at the “scariest” hour, which is at 12 a.m.

Surprisingly I’m excited; I’ll probably sell everything I steal.

We’re all standing in front of the house, ski masks and everything.

My friends’ names are Bill, Leo, Morgan, Jeremy, Mark, Sierra, Julie, Chris, Caleb, Abby and Lisa.

We’re slowly walking into the mansion; as soon as we walk in we all start

grabbing things that look special.

As we finish downstairs, I hear a creak near me, then a scream right beside me. I bolted to the nearest person, who happened to be Leo. I explain what happened and he told me I was a big baby.

He’s probably right, I am a big baby, so I drop my stuff and slowly sneak toward the door, but wait what is creeping up on Julie.

Is that a wolf behind her? I yell at the mismatched creature and Julie suddenly spots it as well.

She runs for the door along with everyone else, we all huddle near the door and wait. I yell “what are you waiting for?” and Mark returns “the door’s locked”

We all screamed and ran to a hiding spot.

As it quieted down all you heard were growls and the scraping of claws.

If you weren’t scared at that point you weren’t human.

Then a scream pierced the air. It was so loud then it disappeared and it was all quiet again.

I could hear the sobs of Mark and their quick little “please save us.”

I bolted for the stairs and see the mansion has come to life full of death, there is a brown coloured werewolves.

I continue running upstairs to a closet and hid there. More screams pierce the air as another hiding spot is found, I’m not going to die in a house like this, so I look for a weapon room, all

the monsters seem to have disappeared.

All my remaining friends appear, I do a head count and three of them have died in horrible circumstances which I’m not going to describe.

We all quickly search for a key or a weapon; we don’t find anything except a couple of butter knives in the kitchen.

I quickly think of what wolves don’t like and then a idea sparks. I tell everyone to plug all the holes and start the sinks, maybe the wolves are afraid of water.

Then the wolves and ghosts come out again.

Wanna know how I can tell?

Well to my left Caleb gets dragged off to die.

So far Caleb, Chris, Mark and Morgan have died.

But the wolves are staying away now all we have to do is outwit them, except fins poke through the water.

I scream to get on to the shelves to higher ground, Jeremy and Bill get dragged under and where they were, blood mixes with the water, there’s only five of us left.

I’m determined not to let anyone else die, the water recedes somehow and the wild monsters get away again.

There is lying on the floor an obstacle course, I realize the house is testing us; I tell my remaining friends to follow me and don’t do anything different.

We slowly dodge bloody butcher knives and spikes. We’re on the last obstacle and my friends

are starting to grin a little then, everyone that died shows up.

Everyone gulps and turns that grin upside down. I remember the knives in my pocket and chuck them at the remains of my friends. They all hit except I didn’t have enough knives.

There is one zombie left, I grab the nearest thing while my eyes are closed. I happen to grab a butcher knife in mid-air and chuck it back at the zombie.

It hits and we run to the door; we all run home scared and telling stories, but nobody believes us.

That is the scariest and stupidest thing I’ve been through.

At least I still have some friends, I hope they destroy that mansion.

One Halloween night there was a terrifying noise coming from upstair’s in Josh’s house….

BANG, CLANG, CLUNK! He heard.

He jumped off the couch and hid under the blankets. Josh was only eight, but he was responsible enough to be left home alone.

He reached out and grabbed the phone, which was lying on the coffee table but something grabbed his arm.

Luckily he managed to yank his arm away from the mysterious creature.

He stayed under the blankets until his mom got home. Once his mom got home he leaped out of his blankets and cried to his mother and told her all about the events that happened.

He also told her about the scary creature grabbing his arm, but as usual his mother told him he was over tired and to go to bed.

Josh, who did not usually argue when it comes to bed time, cried out “bed!” because his room was in the attic.

He than went up to his bedroom and got in bed. Josh looked around and saw his best friend Joe. “Haha you screamed like a little girl.” Joe said.

Josh’s mom said that was a neat trick and told him to apologize to Josh and told him to go home.

Joe and Josh were never friends again..

Pumpkin comes to Creepy school life and scares me JADE WICKENHEISER Gr. 5 – Riverview

It was almost Halloween night, so I was carving a pumpkin. It was bright orange, I carved a big mouth and five goggly eyes. It gave me goosebumps because it looked suspicious. When ever I went, his eyes seemed to follow me. When I went to go put the knife in the sink, the pumpkin moved across the table. I assumed he rolled, so I did not really care.

On Halloween night I went trick or treating around the neighbourhood. I heard laughing. I looked back, but did not see everything I heard. “Guess who?” I looked

down, it was my pumpkin. I screamed and ran home as fast as I could. My pumpkin had two spidery stems as legs. He was chasing me.

I accidentally dropped my candy.

I could not get it. My pumpkin grabbed it. I was so scared I did not care. I finally got home. I locked all the doors. My pumpkin’s stems grew so much he was as tall as my window and was able to jump in the windows.

I ran to my room and called my mom on the phone but my pumpkin answered the phone and said, “See you next year.”

I hung up the phone and I started to scream.

The flying costume JOSH SCHMIDT Gr. 3 – Parkland I went into the woods and I went behind a tree and a rock and the witch who flew past me and zombies who walked past also the ghosts and the goblins who ran past. And my mailman becomes evil and my house too. So I went to my costume and it flew up and up and up and flew up and down

in front of me. And went out the door and never came back.

And then I didn’t find it again so I looked out my window and I found it because it flew past my window and then it again and again and again so I went to bed and I woke up and my costume was at the window and flew in.

And it flew out again and flew away and I put on my skeleton costume.

SHELBY HILL Gr. 6 – Riverview

When Caitlyn turned 14, she was sent to a school called Creepsin School. It was a long way to walk from home to school. The school looked awful from the outside. There were dead vines and it looked abandoned. When she walked in the teachers and staff looked awfully weird. Some of them were werewolves, vampires, zombies, Frankenstein and spiders – pretty big spiders. The hallways were horrible, nothing but old paintings and the stairs were very old and creaky.

Caitlyn saw this vampire giving a paper to everyone. Caitlynn walked up to the vampire and he gave her a piece of paper with all of the the classes and the subjects that were taught in them. All were gross and weird. There was the Dissecting Room, Flesh and Blood Room and Break a Hand Room. Caitlyn was in the Dissecting Room. Her teacher was Mr. Deadly and he was a zombie. Caitlynn got one good look at him and she ran out and hid. The Brake a Hand Room was actually the gym. Her gym teacher was Frankenstein. She did laps and jumping jacks and all that hard stuff. When it was time for lunch, it was a good thing her mom packed her a good lunch. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be eating because she thought it was disgusting to each flesh and drink blood.

After the day was finally over, Caitlynn was relieved. She walked home and told her parents all about the disaster. Her parents didn’t believe her, so tomorrow would be another day of disaster.

Once upon a time everyone was really excited because it was a day till Halloween.

Everyone was out at the mall getting their kids a costume. One got a bunny, one got a dog and one got a Godzilla. The mall shut down for the night.

In the morning all of the kids got up and put on their costumes, went to school and got a whole bunch of candy, cupcakes, cake, chocolate bars and marshmallows.

When they went outside for lunch 10 people were missing.

One of the helpers at the school went looking for all 10 kids.

A couple minutes later she found all of them but they were dead and all lying in a big puddle of blood.

Their necks were bright red. The duty that was looking for the kids disappeared.

When the bell rang to go home everyone went trick-or-treating.

There was one house that had a head of a skeleton singing “Revenge, revenge, revenge is all I need” and every kid that went to that house gets pulled in and eaten.

First to go in was the little boy dressed as a bunny.

He rang the doorbell and got pulled in and put into storage.

Next was the dog.

He got pulled in and put into storage.

Next was the Godzilla. She said “Give my friends back!”

The dude was scared to death so he had to say yes.

STORIES & The haunted house that crumbled to the ground ANICIA BALDWIN Gr. 6 – Ecole Baker It’s Halloween today and Ali’s mom said that she couldn’t go down Spark Street, for the only house that was still standing was haunted. All of the other houses on the street rotted from inside out and eventually they crumbled to the ground. Ali heard that the house owners where still in side of the houses when they fell down.

Siri asked Ali if she would go trick or treating with her.

Ali said yes but she clearly announced that she could not go down Spark Street.

When she told Siri this, Siri burst out laughing “HAUNTED, you’ve got to be kidding me!!”

Ali didn’t make a peep after that. By the time school was over the sun started to go down. It’s almost winter so it gets dark earlier. Siri walked out alongside Ali when the bell rang.

Everybody ran home to get ready for Halloween, at 8 p.m. people started to go door-to-door chanting trick or treat.

Siri and Ail’s bags were heaping with candy by 12:30 a.m. and they had to go home

but Siri made her go down Spark Street which her mother said not to go down.

Siri put a piece of paper over the street sign so Ali wouldn’t freak out.

Since Ali had never been up that street she could not tell that it was the haunted house, they reached the door and Siri pushed Ali in side. Siri slammed the door behind her.

Ali screamed as a white figure pulled up beside her, she was so scared that she ran up the creaky old stairs.

The whole house smelled as if mold was growing inside the walls.

When she reached the top floor she peeked into the dining room and there, sitting in front of her, was about 12 ghostly figures trying to eat apple cinnamon pie. She was so horrified and scared she jumped out of the closest window and ended up breaking a few leg bones.

Siri has always been mean but never this mean on Halloween.

So after a few painful months Ali forgave Siri and they went trick or treating together every year after that.

And for the house, it crumbled to the ground along with the ghosts.

It turned golden and I went and showed my mother.

And then mom turned everything in the house golden.

Colin Fox

Nov. 8, 1947 ~ Oct. 15, 2015 Colin Fox passed away at Dunrovin Park Lodge Oct. 15, 2015. He was born in Williams Lake Nov. 8, 1947 and had lived in Quesnel for the past 20 years.

Colin is predeceased by his parents Jack and Alice Bryce.

He is remembered by his sister Colleen Bryce and brother-in-law Barry Braden of Kelowna, B.C., his nephew Jason Holland also of Kelowna, B.C., niece Sherry Holland and great nephew Bryce Holland both of Grande Prairie, Alta.

Quesnel sweeps Lac La Hache in two game series

The Quesnel Kangaroos took two games this past weekend Oct. 23-24 defeating the Lac La Hache Tomahawks in a home and home series. Quesnel had their biggest offensive output of the season finishing the weekend with a total of 28 goals. The entertainment started Friday in Quesnel where they won 15-1. The ‘Roos jumped all over them, as they fired seven past the Tomahawks goaltender in the first period and out shot them 32-5. The second saw the ‘Roos score three goals and the third with five.

The offense was led by Curtis Gassoff and Tommy Grant who recorded hat trick’s. Lac La Hache was overpowered from the outset and it carried over into Saturday’s game in Lac La Hache, which saw the ‘Roos defeat them 13-4, as they swept the series and picked up their first wins on the year. Their next game will be this Sunday Nov. 1 when they take on The Quesnel Kangaroos overmatched the Lac La Hache Tomahawks in their back-to-back series Oct. 23-24 putting up 28 goals for the the Kitimat Ice Demons at 1 p.m. weekend.

He also added that the one thing that surprised him during the matches was the fights between McGregor and Emblau, in how aggressive their opponents were.

“The only thing that did surprise me was the aggression of the two little Cranbrook boxers,” Doern said.”

“We weren’t quite ready for that but it was a good experience and now we are ready for it.”

Along with the individual medals that the boxers won the club also won the award for best out of town team. 2 Rivers Boxing Club will be hosting Rumble 19 Nov. 7 with the fights starting at 7 p.m, which will feature Lee in the main event. 2 Rivers Boxing Club brought four of their boxers to Cranbrook for the Charity Challenge Oct. 24 with the boxers performing well.

They included Rumour McGregor, Emmett Emblau, Trey Lightening and Olin Lee. McGregor was the youngest of the group, as she is eight years old. Emblau and McGregor took part in the Initiation category, which is for boxers from the ages of eight to 10. The matches had no winner or loser with both boxers receiving a medal. Head coach Wally Doern said he was impressed how McGregor and Emblau did in their bouts.

“I was happy with their performances,” Doern said.

“They couldn’t have done any better.”

He said Emblau got some good shots in on his opponent as well.

“He landed some big hooks and when they landed they were pretty big,” Doern said.

Quesnel runners display dominant performance in lead up to provincials RYAN GRAHAM Observer Reporter Quesnel runners headed to Dawson Creek Oct. 24 for their zone competition and had a strong showing. Jett McCall from Quesnel Junior School in the Bantam Girls division finished first, while Aleesha Bautista came second in Juvenile Girls.

The Senior Girls division saw Olivia Baptiste and Olivia Moody of Correlieu finish first and second, as well as Bautista placing second for Junior Girls. Bantam Boys saw Matthew Letoria of QJS finished second, while Cole Dinsdale finished first for Senior Boys.

Correlieu’s boys and girls team’s won the team titles at the competition. Oct. 17 saw the runners despite the rainy condition compete at the 10 Mile Lake Invitational.

The Bantam Boys from QJS finished strong with Chris Henderson finishing with a time of 21:16,

Jake Beaudry with 21:52, Christopher Hinkel with 22:18, Chase Gillis-Gagnon with 24:10 and Adam Nicholas with 24:15. Bazil Spencer in Juvenile Boys finished with a time of 19:09, while Scott Sargent of Correlieu in Junior Boys finished with 19:44. The Senior Boys division saw Dinsdale finish with 20:15, Dane Jacobsen with 22:53 and Jared Hamelin with 27:11.

The Bantam Girl division saw Quesnel come up big with McCall finishing with a time of 23:48, Amber Proudfoot with 24:40, Hannah Vaughan- Ferrell with 24:53, Halle Cada with 25:25, Bryanna Pontious with 25:34 and Angeline Lewington with 27:39.

STORIES & PICTURES Parents finally believe Jamie JENNAH PAUL Gr. 6 – Nazko Once upon a time there was girl name Jamie who was six years old and who had just moved to a new house.

Jamie kept telling her parents about a clown she kept seeing in her bedroom window.

She would run into her mom’s room yelling I saw it and her mom would say saw what? Her mother did not believe her and told Jamie to stop lying and go back to bed.

The next day after getting back from school she continued to see the clown.

After she had dinner and went up the stairs to the bathroom to wash up for bed then she heard a SLAM! The lights went out and Jamie tried to open the door but it would not open. The clown than appeared and said “you sleep in my room Jamie I’ll be seeing you” the lights then turned back on and the door opened.The next day Jamie went to her mom and asked if they could move and her mom said that we have

I looked up past the cliff to see Tris Riddle and Tessa LeStrange staring at my lifeless body, laughing.

That sent me haywire. My soul got up and possessed her, making her jump down the sewer so she would never see anyone again.

I tore her face off with a ladder and ripped her neck so her head was twisted.

Tris was throwing stuff down at my dead corpse when I possessed her making her slap everyone there and then jump down a cliff farther than mine was.

My fiancé sent emails through Myspace telling everyone about my death. People were scared to go in the bathrooms because he said I would come up the sewer and murder them.

So I eventually got sick of it and murdered Frank, my fiancé, through his shower.

No one dared talk to me after that and I lived a haunted ghostly life.

The only thing is people had thought that the cliff I was pushed off of was haunted.

But Dracula saw a cow on the road “Mm beef,” Dracula said as he whisked the cow off its feet.

45 minutes later he drove up to his cave and yelled at the cow, “What are you waiting for – an engraved invitation?” as he shoved the cow in the barn.

He went to his castle’s bar and had a drink.

“That’ some good Joe,” he said.

For the next 1,000 years Dracula slept in his coffin at the very back of his cave, and never harmed the people or livestock of Earth again.

Then the lights went out, he saw a face in shadows, he turned on the lights and it was gone. He went upstairs and gave his mom the pickles.

Three Weeks Later “Can you grab some beans” “okay mom” said Carter. So he went to the basement, got the beans, the door slammed and locked, the lights shut off, he saw the face then the body.

He dropped the beans, it came close then tapped him then he was at a cliff.

The monster was behind him and whispered “push” as Carter began to fall.

Three Corners Health Services Society, in partnership with Canim Lake, Canoe Creek, Dog Creek, Soda Creek, Williams Lake, and Alkali Lake is looking for a Mental Wellness Clinician who understands holistic health including all aspects of the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual quadrants.

Qualifications: The successful applicant must have knowledge of First Nations peoples within the Interior Health region as well as a good understanding of colonization and the unique history of Indigenous peoples in Canada. This understanding includes the impacts of colonization both past and present. The individual will practice from a Trauma-Informed and culturally safe paradigm. Flexibility with work hours is required, as occasionally weekends or evenings may be needed.

We are seeking a candidate with: t Past and/or current counselling experience within a First Nations context t Group facilitation experience in both traditional First Nations approaches and mainstream approaches t General competency in concurrent disorders t Excellent communication skills and cross cultural communication experience t Two years’ recent related experience in a mental health and substance use environment or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience t Current valid B.C. driver’s license and reliable vehicle t Masters degree from an accredited university in an Allied Health, Behavioural, or Social Science field relevant to the position t Ability to complete successful advanced criminal record check Preference will be given to qualified applicants of Aboriginal ancestry per Canada’s Human Rights Act and Legislation surrounding employment equity.
