Ice time extension approved Concerns raised about effect on lacrosse program and others who use arena Frank Bucholtz Mission Record

Mission council has narrowly approved a one-year experiment in lengthening the ice time available at the Leisure Centre.

Council voted 4-3 to accept a proposal to extend the ice season in the south arena for 14 weeks, from late March until June. The extra cost will be just over $25,000. The experiment will take place in the spring of 2016.

The proposal from several ice user groups was examined by the parks, recreation and culture department, which brought a report to council on Oct. 19. recommending the extended ice season.

Council members had raised concerns about the effect on other user groups, notably Mission Minor Lacrosse (MML), and the additional cost. Most of the extra cost will be in hiring staff to maintain the ice for the extra period. While additional revenue will be generated from user groups, it is not expected to be enough to cover the full costs, said

deputy parks, recreation and culture director Stephanie Key. The department did a comprehensive study of all user groups at the arena and how much time they actually used the facilities. MML uses the floor of the arena for an average of 38 hours per week each spring. Most of its use has been at the north arena, which will remain available next spring.

Long-awaited food bank building to open Frank Bucholtz Mission Record

After years of planning, a standalone facility for the long-established St. Joseph’s Food Bank will officially open Saturday.

For Ron Leger, the volunteer who has championed the project, this has been a long time coming.

However, he feels the end product is even better than he could have expected, and says it will serve the community well for many years to come.

Leger, a local accountant, has been living and breathing the building for a long time. He has been involved with the food bank since 1996, a few years after it first started serving people in Mission, in 1990.

As far back as 2009, he was able to get permission from the Catholic archbishop of the Vancouver diocese to build a standalone building on church property. The food bank has been operating from the church facility. In 2011, he was able to get a building permit, and then the work of building the

Leger, who worked in a grocery store as a teen and young adult, wanted a building designed something like a store. The top floor has an entrance for clients, and a counter where they can be

served. It is open and spacious.

There are washrooms and office space.

The bottom floor has a loading dock (with a driveway extension), lots of storage room, and will soon have a large cooler and a lift to transport food items to the

upper floor.

St. Joseph’s Food Bank is a member of the B.C. Food Bank Association and Food Banks Canada. It is open twice a month to distribute food to clients. The service is totally volunteer-operated. In 2014, 4,376 people were helped with the gift of food. Of those, 2,936 were adults, 1,415 children and there were 25 infants.

The total worth of food distributed that year was $528,750.

Food bank manager Cully Poston said the food bank has about 50 volunteers, “and the average age is 72.”

They hand out donations on the first and third Thursdays of each month, but it takes two full days before each distribution date to get the food ready. They also have volunteers who pick up donations from stores and individuals.

“The food bank is something society requires today,” Poston says.

“I wish it didn’t, but there are so many working poor today who need food. The new building will make it much easier for us, as we

will no longer have to set up and take down (in the church basement).”

Leger says about one-third of the total cost of about $500,000 for the new building came as a result of donated labour and materials, with a great deal of help coming from several contracting companies. All the rest came from money donated to the project.

“I don’t think it would have happened without all those donations,” he says.

He said he was grateful to The Record and for letting people know about the project, and particularly to The Record’s Kevin Plastow, who created the logo for the food bank.

Opening ceremonies for the building, located on a corner of the St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic church property at 32550 Seventh Ave., take place at 11 a.m.

The community is invited to attend. Taking part in the opening ceremonies will be Most Rev. Michael Miller, archbishop of Vancouver, and Mission Mayor Randy Hawes.

In 2015, MML had 215 participants, up from 2194 in 2013. By contrast, Mission Minor Hockey had 334 participants in 2014-14, down from 369 in 2012-13.

Other users of the ice are: Mission Skating Club, with 50 users; Mission Racers speed skating club, with no users in the past year, but 21 the year before; the Mission Outlaws Junior B hockey team, Hatzic Middle School hockey academy, with 45; Mission Secondary hockey academy, with 30; and nine adult groups with 190 users in total.

The skating club uses facilities in Aldergrove and Abbotsford each spring, the proposal pointed out. Mayor Randy Hawes said some adult ice users from Mission travel as far as Coquitlam to play recreational hockey, because of lack of ice availability in Mission.

The two hockey academies will also use the ice in the spring if it is available, according to the proposal.

Coun. Jenny Stevens and several other council members noted that a number of lacrosse parents had been contacting them, stating that lacrosse players were getting “the short end of the stick,” as a result of the proposal. However, she was satisified when told they would not lose any hours.

so that it could be used for games as well as practices.

“We haven’t tried to sacrifice one sport for another,” Key told council. “All sports have value in our community.”

Hawes said tyke lacrosse players could use the gym at the Leisure Centre for practices, noting that they are beginners and many are just learning how to catch the ball with their sticks. The gym is properly set up for such users, he said.

tional cost.

“The arena is a very expensive facility and we should be utilizing it,” Hawes said. “This is a one-year trial and it will be reviewed. It’s an inexpensive way to find out if it works.”

The Elks clubhouse on Second Avenue was the target of a brazen break-in on Monday morning.

President Roy Archer received a call from the alarm company about 7:30 a.m. and headed to the building. He found a window smashed in and an exit door booted open. The office door had also been smashed in, and a large amount of material had been thrown around by the young thief, who was wearing gloves and a bandanna. The surveillance video clearly shows the thief, in particular his clothing and shoes, and Archer hopes a reward will help lead to his capture.

Anyone with information can contact Mission RCMP. While the thief caused damage to the doors and

window, he didn’t get too much – just some money from a charity box. However, as it is the second break-in within six months, Archer says the club is looking at putting bars on the windows to keep thieves out.

Natalie Dubreuil was last seen in Abbotsford on Oct. 1, and her currents whereabouts were unknown as of press time In addition to the Abbotsford/ Mission area, Dubreuil has been known to frequent Surrey and the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver.

She is described as First Nations, DUBREUIL 5’ 6”, with a slim build, dark drown hair and blue eys. She is heavily tattooed, including on her arms, hand and neck.

A stellar effort The six-year effort to establish a permanent home for the St. Joseph’s Food Bank, which last year helped more than 4,000 Mission residents with the most basic of human needs – enough to eat – is coming to fruition on Saturday.

The official opening of the $500,000 building, built totally through contributions from individuals and businesses, will mark a new chapter for the food bank, which has been operating since 1990.

The food bank, which has operated through St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church on Seventh Avenue since its inception, is totally run by volunteers – about 50 of them. Their average age is 72.

They give back to the community (usually volunteering for about six days per month) because they care about others. As manager Cully Poston says, there are many working poor people these days who,

even though they have jobs, find it a stretch to have enough food on hand to last throughout the month. Given the high costs of home ownership or rentals, ever-increasing taxes and user fees, and other constant impositions on family budgets, it’s a scenario that is far too common.

The food bank does make a significant difference for these people. and it’s a strong signal that Mission is a caring community.

The fact that so many people willingly donated to make the new building a reality, and so many businesses contributed materials and labour, is a testament to the depth of community support for this endeavour.

Congratulations to all the people who made it happen, particularly Ron Leger, who has been working hard on this project for many years.

Narrative ignores transportation challenges Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views The scandal of the week at the B.C. legislature is what could be termed “delete-gate.”

Primarily, it revolves around 36 pages of government emails that the NDP opposition has been trying for a year to get under freedom of information legislation. They relate to a series of meetings between transportation ministry bureaucrats and remote communities along Highway 16, between Prince George and Prince Rupert.

If you want all of the accusations about government secrecy and alleged cover-ups, I invite you to read “Access Denied,” the latest report of the Information and Privacy Commissioner at www.oipc.bc.ca, and transcripts of question period in the legislature this week.

What you won’t find there is much discussion of the actual problem, which is a shortage of safe and practical transportation options in and out of these communities, most

of which are federally funded aboriginal reserves far from the region’s only highway.

What we have seen for decades is a dramatic media narrative about one or more serial killers preying on vulnerable women hitch-hiking along what is now known world-wide as the Highway of Tears.

The Wikipedia entry for Highway of Tears gives a sense of the credibility of this narrative. It begins with the unsolved murder of Gloria Moody, last seen leaving a bar in Williams Lake in 1969. That’s a long way from Highway 16.

Then there was Monica Jack, killed in 1978.

DNA technology resulted in a charge finally being laid last year against a known serial rapist. This was even further away, near Merritt, and she was a 12-year-old riding her bike.

Other cases involve street prostitution in and around Prince George, an urban hub for a large aboriginal population similar to Regina and Winnipeg.

Discussion in Victoria focuses on urban notions of increased transit, in places where existing service may be under-used.

Nationally, the narrative is that deep-seated social problems within aboriginal communities would somehow be solved by a law-

yer-heavy judicial inquiry that looks only at tragedies involving women.

You won’t find much discussion of the actual problem, which is a shortage of safe and practical transportation options. was last seen in the early hours of May 28, 2011, after a grad party in the woods outside Vanderhoof. Her truck and tent were still there. Again, nothing to do with hitch-hiking, but at least it was near Highway 16.

Here’s something else you won’t often hear in the Highway of Tears melodrama.

There is commercial bus service on Highway 16, although Greyhound reduced frequency in 2013 as it struggles with low ridership and high costs.

BC Transit also operates bus service to some remote communities like Kispiox and Gitsegukla, connecting them south to Smithers. But BC Transit requires local governments and riders to cover about half the cost. Indian Act reserves don’t pay.

North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice has noted that what people in remote communities ask for is a way to get back and forth for shopping and medical appointments.

Yes, shopping is an important need, as those who live in remote areas can tell you. And Northern Health already runs a bus service for remote residents who need medical care.

Rice’s observations at least move us toward practical solutions, although most of her effort seems directed towards political blame.

I hope the infamous 36 pages of emails are eventually released, since they were not deleted but rather excluded from release.

They may bring the discussion back to the actual public service issue, which is what realistic transportation options exist for these communities.

Council ignored presentation Voting system distorts On Monday, Oct. 19, I attended the Mission council meeting. I was specifically interested in a presentation that was being made to save our animal shelter here in Mission.

Diane Davies made a very passionate and well-informed plea to save the shelter here.

She even offered a very workable solution to council (which included $10,000), but it was very obvious to me that our council members do not care that animals are going to be sent to Chilliwack once the shelter here is closed.

In the past three years, more dogs have been euthanized than adopted out of the Chilliwack shelter.

This is not acceptable to me and definitely should be a concern to everyone, whether

Canada’s winnertake-all voting system has significantly distorted the will of Canada’s electors, handing an un-earned majority to one party.

Today, we do not have the government that we voted for!

Nationally, Liberals earned the votes of 39.5 per cent of Canadian voters, yet the voting system handed them over 54.4 per cent of the seats in the House of Commons as a result. This is a majority government – on only a minority of the vote.

The desire for change was clearly evident in the results, but our winner-take-all system granted the Liberal Party many more seats than their vote merits and shut out other voices.

A proportional voting system would have granted 134 seats to the Liberals (less than a majority), 108 seats to the Conservatives, 67 to the NDP, 16 to the Bloc and 12 to the Greens.

Today we should have a minority government in place in Canada.

Regional distortions are also evident. The Bloc, with its geographically concentrated 4.7 per cent of the vote,

you own a dog or not. How many people realize that if their dog gets loose they are going to have to travel to Chilliwack to retrieve it?

What happens if that dog owner is a senior who does not drive?

It also was very apparent to me that council was paying no attention to what Ms. Davies had to say, even to a point of ignoring her.

She wasn’t thanked for her presentation, she wasn’t told that her suggestion would be considered. Nothing.

Nothing at all was said to her. It was as if she hadn’t been heard.

We left very disappointed.

Demographics affect enrolment In response to your article titled, “Mission Champs Work for Future.”

I would like to first thank you for capturing the wonderful efforts of the Neighbourhood School Champions. We at the Mission Public School District feel gratitude for the proactive approach taken on behalf of all citizens in Mission. The group’s efforts are noticed and the results speak for themselves.

The area surrounding Mission Central School has been transformed and maintained by this group, and moreover, the positive attention they have drawn to this area has been noticed by all. We feel a debt of gratitude to every community member that participates in this effort and to the Neighbourhood School Champs for the effort in co--ordinating on our community’s behalf.

The article however, indicates that the enrolment at Mission Central Elementary has declined since the boundaries of French Immersion were opened.

This is not a fair statement. Enrolment at Mission Central has been on a decline since 2003. Boundaries were opened in 2013.

There are many reasons the enrolment has declined but the most glaring is the changing of demographics in this community school’s catchment area.

In most recent studies, it has been determined we

can expect a further decline over the next decade given this rationale. Over this same time period, enrolment of the French Immersion program in Mission Public Schools has held its own. Given the decline in our overall enrolment, and the slight increase in the French Immersion program enrolment, it is apparent that its program is doing quite well. It must also be noted the majority of our elementary schools in our district are challenged with the same changing demographics.

Declining enrolment has been a difficult challenge for most boards in the province and in particular, our board of education since 2003. It has led to many changes in the way education must be delivered in the district in order to ensure fair and equitable education is offered to all students and that the board meets ministry of education’s requirement of a balanced budget.

I would again like to thank the Neighbourhood School Champions for their efforts. As a citizen of this fine community I feel a great sense of pride.

Trees are a significant cause of power interruptions. Contact between trees and power lines can also create a severe danger.

Trees are pruned using the best arboriculture (tree care) practices. Skilled workers employed by BC Hydro are trained in both electrical safety and tree care. Only correct and proper techniques are used to eliminate any safety hazards.

The B.C. government is making licence plates mandatory for quads, dirt bikes and other off-road vehicles starting Nov. 1, requiring helmets and restricting use by children under 16.

The B.C. legislation imposes a $230 fine for driving an unlicensed offroad vehicle, and a $368 fine for careless operation. For some offences under the Off-Road Vehicle Act related to reckless use or environmental damage, penalties can go as high as a $5,000 fine and six months in jail.

Forests Minister Steve Thomson said the $48 licence fee applies only once when a vehicle is purchased, and was set to recover the costs of the program administered

by ICBC. Once startup costs are paid for, a portion of the licence revenue will go to off-road clubs to use for trail improvements, Thomson said.

The province estimates there are 200,000 off-road vehicles that re-

quire licensing, including snowmobiles that have been licensed since the 1970s. About 35,000 of those have registered voluntarily since the new licences were offered a year ago.

Jeff Mohr, past president of the Quad Riders Association of B.C., said his members are most of the voluntary registrants so far, and they are pleased B.C. has a system to control the few users who ride recklessly or damage the environment.

“We want to get more people out on the trails, sharing and enjoying the outdoors,” Mohr said.

The licence system also allows police to track stolen vehicles, even if they are taken out of the province.

B.C. is the last Canadian province to implement a licensing system.

The Quad Riders and B.C.’s 72 snowmobile clubs are prepared to publicize the new regulations to their members, and Thomson said they will act as “eyes and ears” for conservation and natural resource officers.

Dike work will continue for years Frank Bucholtz Mission Record

Strengthening the dikes protecting low-lying areas of Mission from high-water events along the Fraser River will be a multi-year challenge.

Mission council discussed the two dikes it is responsible for at its Oct. 19 meeting. One protects the low-lying area in Mission City from Lougheed Highway near The Junction shopping area (on the west) to the area east of the West Coast Express staging area along the Canadian Pacific railway tracks. That area is about 121 hectares in size.

The second dike is in the Silverdale area, and protects 364 hectares, most of which is agricultural land.

A report to council said the most recent work on the Mission city dike took place in 2011, and the dike is in good condition from its western end to the Mission harbour office on Harbour Avenue. However, east of that location, there are a number of areas where it requires strengthening to handle the largest freshets.

However, the district does not have

a right-of-way in all areas where the dike is located, and to obtain that would be expensive. The report suggests improvements be done on a gradual basis as redevelopment of area properties allows Mission to obtain a right-of-way.

The report suggests that improvements to the Silverdale dike would be too expensive.

Both dikes were designed in 1969 to withstand flooding equivalent to the 1894 Fraser River flood, the highest recorded flood on the river.

However, modeling in recent years has indicated that they need to be somewhat higher to handle an equivalent flood.

During high water in 2007 and 2012, the district needed to use lock blocks and bastions as temporary flood protection. Another concern is that some areas north of Lougheed Highway flooded in 2007. That had not previously been recorded.

Staff recommend the district work on a design and business plan for upgrades, so that if grant money becomes available, it can apply.

of Trudeaumania have risen again in the Fraser Valley. Pierre and his son Justin have a unique relationship here in the Central Fraser Valley. It was in 1968 that the federal Liberals last sent a person from the Fraser

Valley to Ottawa under Pierre Trudeau’s red wave that swept the nation.

His name was Jerry Pringle and he did one term for the Abbotsford area.

Forty-seven years later Trudeau’s son Justin would carry the red flag again in the Valley and send Jati Sidhu, who recently captured the Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon riding on Oct 19.

You have to give credit to Sidhu, who ran in 2000 in the DewdneyAlouette riding, which is part of the new riding.

He also ran a few other times for political office and narrowly missed being elected.

It is that perseverance and staying in the political game that makes winning a reality, similar to Abbotsford Coun.

Moe Gill, who ran several times for a seat on council and now has served close to 20 years in public office.

All of this shapes our future, just like when Naranjan Grewall became the first South Asian to be elected to public office in Canada in 1950.

He was awarded with ‘The World’ in the Pioneer Category at the 100 Year Journey at the South Asian Gala on Oct 3 in Vancouver.

He also became mayor of Mission City in 1954 and later ran for the CCF in 1956.

The award will reside at the Centre for IndoCanadian Studies and Mark D. Evered, president and vice-chancellor at the University of the Fraser Valley, accepted the honour on his behalf that evening said: “I am pleased to accept this honour on behalf of

the communities served by the University of the Fraser Valley. Naranjan Singh Grewall’s pioneering leadership in Mission and his service to our province have been an inspiration to many.

“Tonight’s event is about remarkable journeys, but it is also about remarkable legacies. Mr. Grewall’s legacy includes those next-generation Indo-Canadian leaders who have continued to play such a vital role in the development of the Fraser Valley.

MAKE IT YOUR MISSION Community Budget Consultation Meeting Monday, November 2, 2015, 7 pm Council Chambers at Municipal Hall This meeting is an opportunity to provide input and feedback on the District’s proposed 2016 budget.

Council is proposing a budget/tax increase of 1.68% for 2016. This proposal includes packages aimed at maintaining and enhancing services, saving for future infrastructure and information on the proposed drainage utility. Council is also proposing a 1% increase in municipal water utility user rates and a 4% increase in municipal sewer utility user rates to ensure that critical infrastructure can be built and/or maintained without borrowing, and no increase in fees for garbage, recycling, and compost.

A brief presentation by staff will be provided before members of the public are invited to address Council with their questions and comments on the 2016 budget.

Kelly Chahal, who became the first South Asian female to be elected to Abbotsford city council in 2014; and former Mission mayor James Atebe, the first African to be elected to the District of Mission, have all become political changers in the valley for the future generations who may consider running the game.

School district surplus Mission school district recorded a surplus in the 2014-15 school year, its audited financial statements show.

The district had an operating surplus of $1.035 million for the year, which ended in June.

The positive cash flow enabled it to retire all its outstanding debt.

The surplus has been transferred to the district’s contingency fund and will help fund this year’s activities.

The district attributes the surplus to the teacher strike, which occurred at the beginning of the school year in September w2014, and a subsequent late start to the school year.

Two projects in running for community grants Emma’s Acres and Waterfront Educational Eco-Centre part of cross-country competition Two Mission projects are among 385 which are part of Aviva Canada’s community fund competition.

Voting for the 2015 Aviva Community Fund ended on Saturday, with people voting online for the projects, designed for positive change in communities all across Canada. The ideas each fall within at least one of the three categories: community resilience, community health, and community development. There are two funding levels: under $50,000 and between $50,000 and $100,000.

Finalists will be announced on Nov. 3.

The two Mission projects are Emma’s Acres and Waterfront Education Eco-Centre on Hatzic Lake.

Emma’s Acres is an agricultural social enterprise business located in Mission that is managed by the LINC Society (www.lincsociety.bc.ca). LINC employs victims and survivors of crime, ex-offenders and offenders. Vegetables, herbs and fruits are grown naturally without the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers on property leased to

LINC by the District of Mission.

With 4.5 acres cleared thus far and two 95-by36-foot heated greenhouses in place, Emma’s Acres will be the first small lot farm growing year-round in the community. It sells locally at the Mission City Farmers’ Market, the Deroche Farmers Market and to local businesses.

Some produce is also donated to non-profit societies in Mission including the food banks and the community kitchen. The proceeds of the sales at Emma’s Acres goes towards funding the LINC Society’s work in the community, in particular its work with survivors of serious crime.

Emma’s Acres wants to upgrade its drip irrigation and get electricity to the site, so it can build a cold storage facility. The soil needs to be amended with lime, compost and manure to boost production. This will cost approximately $45,000.

The Waterfront Educational Eco-Centre is proposed at Camp Luther on Hatzic Lake.

The Outlaws remain atop the Harold Brittain Conference and the Pacific Junior Hockey League after the weekend of action, with a record of 12 wins, three losses and one overtime loss.

Mission battled the Aldergrove Kodiaks on Oct. 28 but details were

not available at press time.

The Outlaws next host the Ridge Meadows Flames on Saturday, and then have a home stretch where they welcome the Panthers on Nov. 5, the North Vancouver Wolf Pack on Nov. 7 and the Langley Knights on Nov. 14.

Forest industry workers and other road users using mobile radios must have their radios reprogrammed by professional radio technicians to incorporate the new resource road channels.

It is strongly recommended that all resource road users exercise additional caution during transition.

Haunted attraction Ever wanted to experience a zombie apocalypse? Visitors to the Mission Arts Council’s Tribute to the Walking Dead Haunted Attraction at Mission Raceway Park have been seeing one first-hand for several weeks.

The haunt is a self-guided walk through an installation in the park, featuring sights and scenes familiar to fans of the popular AMC horror drama – and, of course, plenty of zombies.

Arcand doesn’t want to reveal too many spoilers, but she did say the experience is full of grisly scares.

Spooky outings for local families Candy, crafts, spooky skating and more: Halloween in Mission holds plenty of fun events for families.

The Halloween Hoot, a free event for preschoolers from the Mission Early Childhood Development Committee, will feature face painting, crafts, a play area and child development information. It’s on at the Mission Leisure Centre from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Halloween, Oct. 31.

Costumes are encouraged at the Spooky Skate from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Halloween, a family public skate with a spooky twist, at the Mission Leisure Centre.

Those looking to trick-or-treat in a fun and safe

environment can come to Downtown Mission, where local businesses will give out treats from 3 to 5 p.m on Halloween.

As part of the event, the Mission Museum will have crafts, candy and a spooky scavenger hunt from 3 to 5 p.m.

A kid-friendly “Fraidy Cats Maze” is part of the Nightmare Haunted House at Silverdale Hall, which runs for its last two nights on Oct. 30 and 31 from 7 p.m. until about 11 p.m. The main haunted house is quite scary and not recommended for small children, organizers say.

He was born in 1942, and that interest first developed as a child growing up in Vancouver during the Second World War. He collected comic books depicting stories of wartime adventures, where superheroes such as Captain America fought Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.

Smith’s father was a private with the Royal Canadian Army and, as such, was stationed in England for a short time and all over Canada.

Smith was 19 and his wife-to-be Joyce was 14 when they first met in the early 1960s, and she had several uncles who were in the service.

So it was only natural that Smith yearned to be part of that experience – he wanted to become a “rifle man” – and set out to join the 15th Field Artillery Regiment, based in Vancouver.

He was so intent on this endeavour that he made five attempts to be accepted, but problems with his eyes resulted in him being repeatedly rejected. Then, on his sixth try in 1967, he got in by mistake.

He was ecstatic, but the thrill was short-lived – three months into his military training, the lieutenant-colonel called him into his office and pronounced that the mistake had been discovered.

Smith then accepted a transfer into the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps, an administrative corps of the Canadian Army. He earned $1 an hour as a supply technician, a job he performed for three years and which led to visits to the Fort Lewis

army base in Tacoma, Wash., and the Canadian Forces Base Shilo in Brandon, Manitoba.

Smith went on to work a variety of jobs over the years, including at a cartage and warehousing company and as a typewriter technician, but his love for the military never waned.

Five years ago, he became a proud member of the Mission branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, and now serves with the colour party (which takes part in open ceremonies such as Remembrance Day) and the honour party (which is primarily involved in funerals).

He also serves as the Legion liaison with the 521 Aurora Air Cadet League and is actively involved in the annual poppy campaign, helping to raise money for sports programs, education bursaries, veterans’ needs, and more.

The public is invited to take a poppy pin in exchange for a donation. Smith is among the volunteers who stand outside key locations in the community to offer the pins prior to Remembrance Day, and it’s a task he thoroughly enjoys.

“I love talking to people …. I hear lots of stories on what people did or where they served,” he said.

Legion involvement is a family affair. Smith’s son Kevin, daughter Tammy and her husband Drew are all associate members.

He wishes that more people would become involved, particularly as legion membership wanes as older members pass away. Smith says there is much personal satisfaction to be gained from helping others.

“I take great pride in it,” he said.

Carpet bowling is offered Tuesday through Friday in the fall and winter months at the Mission Lawn Bowling clubhouse on Hurd Street.

In the fall and winter, lawn bowling comes inside.

The Mission Lawn Bowling Club, at 7560 Hurd St., has an active group of seniors who enjoy the companionship and the spirit of carpet bowling.

It is fun and easy to learn. The object of the game is simply to roll the bowl as close to the jack (or target ball) as possible.

The bowl is not a perfect sphere, allowing it to curve towards the jack.

The bowls fit comfortably in your hand and no special clothing or shoes are required. All equipment is supplied by the club.

Some of the benefits of this sport are: it improves fitness, increases co-ordination and balance, enhances well-being, is a low impact, therapeutic form of exercise, and provides a social, easy way to make friends and have fun.

Pumpkin Soup 700ml vegetable stock or chicken Ingredients: stock 4 tbsp olive oil 142ml pot double cream 2 onions, finely chopped 4 slices wholemeal seeded bread 1kg pumpkins or squash (try handful pumpkin seed from a packet kabocha), peeled, deseeded and chopped into chunks Preparation: Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large saucepan, then gently cook 2 finely chopped onions for 5 mins, until soft but not coloured. Add 1kg peeled, deseeded and chopped pumpkin or squash to the pan, then carry on cooking for 8-10 mins, stirring occasionally until it starts to soften and turn golden.

Pour 700ml vegetable stock into the pan, then season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10 mins until the squash is very soft. Pour the 142ml pot of double cream into the pan, bring back to the boil, then purée with a hand blender. For an extra-velvety consistency you can now push the soup through a fine sieve into another pan. The soup can now be frozen for up to 2 months.

While the soup is cooking, slice the crusts from 4 slices of wholemeal seed bread, then cut the bread into small croutons. Heat the remaining 2 tbsp olive oil in a frying pan, then fry the bread until it starts to become crisp. Add a handful of pumpkin seeds to the pan, then cook for a few mins more until they are toasted.

These can be made a day ahead and stored in an airtight container. Reheat the soup if needed, taste for seasoning, then serve scattered with croutons and seeds and drizzled with more olive oil, if you want.

35th open house and show for weavers and spinners Whonnock Weavers and Spinners Guild are having their 35th annual fall open house and sale next month.

Bernie and Red musical comedy team returns

Bernie and Red are marking 50 years of marriage, and 50 years of working together as professional entertainers.

The well-known musical duo is holding a concert on Sunday, Nov. 29 at the Matsqui Auditorium in Abbotsford as part of their 50th anniversary tour.

Admission is $10 and all proceeds will go to the Abbotsford Legion branch.

Show time is 2 p.m.

Both originally from Liverpool, England, the couple met as teenagers and subsequently married.

After marriage, they settled in Liverpool where Bernie worked as a salesman and Red was a stay at home mother of two, but something was missing. Entertainment gigs had to fit in with Bernie’s cow milking schedule, (yes, they had managed to get “back to the land”), but before long, Bernie quit milking cows, they began performing full time and were soon travelling worldwide, via their cruise ship performances.

This 50th Anniversary tour has seen them perform throughout North America. By the end of 2015, they will have completed more than 50 concerts dates this year.

In January they’ll be off again for their annual Winter Tour, which includes dates in Arizona, California and Texas, all areas in which they have established themselves as firm favourites with the winter visitor population.

The anniversary show has a 50-year theme.

“Musically we’ve chosen songs that have special memories for us, but nothing is really obscure, these are songs that all people of a certain age will know” says Bernie.

EPP Gilbert Edward August 6, 1926 - October 16, 2015 With profound sadness, but with thankfulness for a life well-lived, we announce that Gilbert Edward Epp passed into the presence of his Lord and Saviour on Friday, Oct. 16, 2015. Gilbert was residing at Bevan Village with his wife. He is survived by his wife, Joy, and his four children: Judy (David Blatz), Cheryl (Mike Lerner), Brenda (George Amaral) and James (Monique Gaisson); six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren as well as Joy’s four children: Laurie Harder (Sue), Linda Patterson, Don Harder (Laurie Townsend) and Diane (Gord Torris); 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; also two sisters: Lois (Duane Schroeder) & Eileen (Walter Wiens).

The Memorial Service will be held at Bakerview MB Church in Abbotsford on Friday, Nov. 6 at 3:00 pm. It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Ruth at the age of 88 years after a lengthy illness. She was predeceased by the love of her life, Ken Borley in 1985. She is survived by her four children: Lynn (Dave), Brian (Mary Lynn), Carol (Robert), and Sheila (Ken); ten grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. She is further survived by three step children: Stanley, Stuart and Sharon and their families. She has also left behind five brothers and one sister to mourn her along with several nieces and nephews. Mom was a very fun loving person who loved to be the center of attention. She loved joking around, dressing in costume and lunch with a bunch. Even though she was legally blind she especially loved her bowling twice a week. She loved to beat the men.

At Mom’s request there will be no service. As she wished, her ashes will be scattered around Fort Steele at a later date. In lieu of flowers those wishing to do so may make a donation in Mom’s memory to CNIB or The Heart Fund.

Music was her passion and she played her violin up until her last year of life, playing in a church orchestra and community group for many years. Her Christian faith was her source of inspiration. Lydia was an intelligent lively, energetic and kind person. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her, especially her children.

Born in Saskatchewan Shirley and her family moved to Mission, BC when she was only three months old. After graduation Shirley worked as a legal secretary in the Fraser Valley until her retirement. Over the years she was an active member of the community and of her church. Shirley was the kind of person who was always interested in others; people were drawn to her and she made friends wherever she was. She will be greatly missed. In the last weeks Shirley received exceptional care by the staff and volunteers at the Christine Morrison Hospice. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Hospice in Mission or to a charity of one’s choice. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, November 2, 2015 at 11:00 am at All Saints Anglican Church in Mission.
