The Lacombe Police Service (LPS) are investigating two residential fires that occurred in the city last week.

At approximately 12:16 a.m. on Oct. 21st, the Lacombe Fire Department (LFD) and LPS attended a residential structure fire in the 4700 block of 59th St. in Lacombe.

The LFD was assisted by Bentley and Blackfalds fire departments and had the fire under control by 12:55 a.m. All residents in the home were safely evacuated and there was no damage to adjacent properties.

With the assistance of the LFD and Global Forensics Inc, a forensic services company specializing in fire origin and cause determination, LPS have assumed responsibility for the investigation into the cause of the fire.

The LPS has also assumed responsibility for the investigation into the cause of the fire that occurred at a four-plex in the 5400 block of 45th St. in Lacombe during the early morning hours of Oct. 18th.

At this time there is no evidence to suggest the two fires are connected, however both fires remain under investigation and anyone with information about either fire is encouraged to contact the LPS at 403-782-3279 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

The assault resulted in the victim being flown initially by STARS from the Lacombe Hospital to the Red Deer Regional Hospital and then subsequently transported by STARS to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton where the victim required extensive medical intervention and treatment for life threatening injuries.

The scene of the assault was contained by LPS for two days while extensive forensic evidence was gathered with the assistance of the Red Deer RCMP Forensic Identification Section.

As a result of the investigation and the evidence collected, William Desjarlais, 33, of Sylvan Lake has been charged with aggravated assault.

LPS SUPPORTS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS Citizens of Lacombe may have been a little surprised as members and staff of the LPS donned a new look this month – pink.

On-duty police officers as well as office and front counter staff wore pink shirts in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

“Safe, vibrant and healthy communities start with healthy citizens” said Chief Steve Murray.

“The LPS recognizes the importance of increasing awareness about a variety of health risks and illnesses and we encourage our residents to become informed about early detection.”

Members of the LPS have also participated with the ‘Man Van’ (operated by the Prostate Cancer Centre) as well as the ‘Sirens for Life’ blood donor challenge.

Red and white blooms to showcase an international legacy Garden planted to mark friendship between Canada and the Netherlands

n a sunny afternoon, among the turned up soil of the gardens in the Lest We Forget Memorial Park in Lacombe, community members gathered for the 70th Anniversary Dutch Canadian Friendship Tulip Garden ceremony.

Where seasonal flowers were once planted by City staff, now will be home to 700 tulips. The planting of the springtime flower, both in red and white blooms, is to commemorate the long lasting friendship that developed between Canada and the Netherlands during the Second World War. Students from Lacombe Christian School, Parkview Adventist Academy, members of the Royal Canadian Legion Lacombe Branch No. 79, special guests and dignitaries gathered for the special occasion on Oct. 21st.

The event was kicked off first by a singing of O Canada, followed by City of Lacombe Mayor Steve Christie’s recount of the beginning of the friendship between the two countries.

“It began in 1940 with the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands,” he said. “The invasion necessitated the escape of Queen Wilhelmina and the Dutch royal family to the U.K. In May of that same year, 1940, where they continued to rule in exile. A month after their arrival, Princess Juliana left for Canada with her two daughters, Princess Beatrix and Princess Irene.”

The royals stayed in Ottawa for five years and Juliana even gave birth to her third daughter Princess Margriet in the Ottawa Civic Hospital in 1943.

“The hospital was declared extraterritorial by the Government of Canada to ensure the newborn princess would have Dutch nationality in order to preserve her status in the line of succession for the throne,” said Christie. “So with the news of the birth, the Dutch flag was flown on the Peace Tower and her birth became a symbol of hope to the Dutch people.”

After the royal family’s eventual return to the Netherlands in 1945, Queen Wilhelmina sent Canada 100,000 tulip bulbs. The gift became an annual one and has now inspired the Dutch Canadian Friendship Tulip Garden concept across the nation, 70 years later.

This period during the Second World War was what ultimately forged the close friendship between Canada and the Netherlands - the gratitude of the Dutch royal family from their stay in Canada, partnered with the role the Canadian Forces played in the liberation of the Netherlands.

“Today, citizens of Lacombe are honoured to receive this gift of red and white tulips,” said Christie. “We are very fortunate to be able to do this, on marking the

Royal Canadian Legion Lacombe Branch No. 79 President Susan Churchill spoke of the major role Canadian troops played in the liberation of the Netherlands in the Second World War. “In the final months of the Second World War, Canadian Forces were given the important and deadly task of liberating the Netherlands from Nazi occupation,” she said.

From September 1944 to April 1945, the Canadian Army fought the German forces, attempting to open the ports to allow food and other supplies to reach the Dutch people. By Nov. 28th, the first convoy of cargo ships entered the Port of Antwerp.

“More than 7,600 Canadian soldiers, sailors and airman died fighting in the Netherlands,” said Churchill. “Canadians

are fondly remembered by the Dutch as both liberators and saviours who rescued millions from sickness and starvation in 1945. They are our grandfathers, fathers, brothers, grandmothers, mothers, sisters, neighbours and heroes. Canadian veterans, their courage, service and sacrifice have kept us strong, proud and free.”

The ceremony was then followed by the planting of the bulbs themselves. The students were joined by Legion members who one by one, got down on their knees to gently press the bulbs into the soil.

For the students, the planting was a way to get their hands dirty and interact directly with history. For Legion members, many who are veterans, planting the bulbs was seen as evidence of the long lasting friendship between the two nations and an acknowledgement of what was fought for in the Second World War. Lacombe was one of 140 communities in Canada to be gifted with a tulip garden.

Kirchner said it was important to commemorate the significant connection between the two countries. She was one of the organizers behind the project, who initially applied for the garden on behalf of the City.

“I was approached by a few community members about the project,” she said.

“Communities from all over applied, but it came down to which communities had enough space to plant 700 tulips.”

The strategic location of garden, in the Lest We Forget Memorial Park, also contributed to Lacombe being chosen as one of the communities. In receiving the gift of the bulbs, the City had to agree to hold a planting ceremony, which would involved veterans and students.

A blooming ceremony will be held in the spring. An exhibit will also be debuted at the Flatiron Museum and Interpretive Centre regarding Dutch immigration around the same time.

Poppy campaign kicks off in Lacombe Friday

BY SARAH MAETCHE LACOMBE EXPRESS The Lacombe Legion will be kicking off the annual poppy campaign tomorrow.

To mark the start of the campaign and to continue on a five-year tradition, two members of the Royal Canadian Legion Lacombe Branch No. 79 presented the symbolic first poppy to City of Lacombe Mayor Steve Christie at City Hall on Tuesday morning.

Each year, from the last Friday in October up until Remembrance Day, Legions across Canada conduct a campaign selling poppies, that will then blossom on lapels and collars of half of Canada’s population.

Lacombe Legion Chair of the Poppy Campaign Jim Pratt said the poppy is a symbol of remembrance of the fallen and it is worn each year for that purpose.

“You’ll be able to buy a poppy at any outlet as of Friday - all of the supermarkets, drug stores and

all the stores will have them available,” he said.

“Just put your money in the box and take away a poppy.”

The contributions to the poppy campaign nationally support Canada’s serving and retired veterans and their families, while ensuring the nation never forgets.

Pratt said that locally, the funds raised from the poppy campaign go directly back to the community.

“We earned about $35,000 last year in the poppy campaign which is really good,” he said. “All of that has gone back into the community. So it will all be spent, every penny, back in our community and only our community.”

Last year the group gave $5,200 from the poppy campaign to the Lacombe Hospital. Other charities have also received some of the funds, including the Ponoka cadets to name a few.

“Come out to the Lacombe Memorial Centre (LMC),” he said. “I think it is always a full house. Be there early and get a good seat.”

The entire LMC will be

open for the ceremony, with the service telecast into the additional rooms for those who cannot sit in the formal service area.

Local woman represents Alberta in livestock judging competition

BY SARAH MAETCHE LACOMBE EXPRESS A local woman has returned from competing in a prestigious North American livestock competition.

Riley Sharp, 18, of Lacombe County, returned last week from competing in a livestock judging competition.

Sharp was part of a four member team from Alberta that went down to the Northern International Livestock Exposition in Billings, Montana to compete in the art of evaluating livestock.

The ultimate goal of livestock judging is for the judge to compare their perceptions of an animal against the considered ideal and then contrast the opinion with other individuals.

In order to qualify, Sharp had to place in a provincial competition that was held in Vermillion.

Her teammates for the competition down in the States included MacArthur Kowalchuk from Willingdon, Hailey Adams from Forestburg and Colby Evans from Carstairs.

Team Alberta joined over 500 participants, which included many from other 4-H clubs and the Future Farmers of America.

The Alberta judging team placed third in sheep, third in swine, first in beef, second in reasoning and third overall in the competition.

As a solo judge, Sharp earned the highest point in senior beef judging and sixth overall.

Sharp is a fourth generation East Lacombe 4-H member.

East Lacombe 4-H Club kicks off new year The East Lacombe 4-H Club has reported the 2015-2016 project year is officially underway.

On Saturday, Oct. 17th, the club, which consists of 16 members, brought our steer and carcass projects to be weighed in.

We all met at the Sharp’s farm at 9 a.m. to begin the process. Each animal is individually weighed and has a topical treatment put on them called Ivomec to prevent internal and external parasites. Our club leader Ken Chessor provided an official 4-H tag to each member that is then put in the calf’s ear.

The end tally was 14 steer projects and eight carcass projects with weights ranging from 500 lbs. to 800 lbs. Our club photographers took photos of each 4-H member with their calf, which are then used later on in our record books.

That morning we also weighed in the ‘Charity Steer.’ This is a steer that is raised by a different club in the Lacombe 4-H Beef Club district each year. This year it is our club’s turn to do so. The Suominen family has two members in the club this year and they will

Canadian Media Circulation Audit

After a long wait, eight months to be exact, the provincial government released the 2015 budget on Tuesday afternoon.

Alberta will now run the largest deficit in the province’s history, which is a tough pill for many Albertans to swallow.

Now with this financial road map finally locked in, we can clearly see spending is up, debt is up, but there have been no cuts made to services.

“Albertans told us they want a plan that supports good jobs and a strong economy,” said Minister of Finance Joe Ceci on Tuesday. They told us they want their families’ health care and education to be

protected, while ensuring every public dollar is well spent—and that’s exactly what we are going to do.”

The government stated this budget aimed to achieve three key priorities: stabilize front line public services, stimulate economic growth and set out a path towards returning to a balanced budget.

The path towards balance seems to indicate borrowing for daily operations, a first in two decades.

Under the Prentice government, the 2015 budget had a surplus of $1.1 billion. The new budget under the Notley government includes a deficit of $6.1 billion.

Budget 2015 also includes funding for hospitals, social services and schools including 380 more teaching positions and 150 more support staff positions.

It also shows increases in infrastructure investment, supports trade development and attempts to improve access to funding for small and medium-size businesses.

One place where it is clear that Albertans will pay more again, just like eight months ago, is through sin taxes. Starting on Oct. 28th, a bottle of wine increased by 18 cents and a bottle of beer increased by approximately two cents. Tobacco taxes again took a hike with another

$5 increase per carton.

Was this the budget we were expecting? At first glance, yes. The budget was everything Premier Notley and the government said it would be. We did not receive any real surprises except for the fact that the budget will not be balanced until 2019-20, a few years later than the NDP promised in their election platform.

It will take a few weeks for opposition parties, pundits, municipalities and regular Albertans to fully grasp what this presented budget means and its lasting impacts. For now, we will just have to accept it as it is presented, at face value.

Canadians in our 20s, 30s, 40s and the children we parent are squeezed on average by lower full-time incomes, higher housing costs, less time and a deteriorating environment compared to 1976 when the Baby Boomers came of age as young adults.

While Trudeau has personally escaped much of this financial squeeze, it is still exciting to imagine what potential his perspective brings to the job of prime minister in the pursuit of a better generational deal, one that works for all Canadians.

In pursuit of better, Trudeau should be commended for his emphasis on bringing Canadians together. Previous government budgets divided generations, pitting investments in the aging population at the expense of investing

At the same time, the Liberal platform was relatively strong at containing medical care spending by comparison with the NDP platform. This, in turn, left fiscal room for the Liberals to propose more new spending for families with children than any other party, which included the Liberal platform borrowing ideas from the Generation Squeeze vision of a New Deal for Families extending parental leave to 18 months per household, offering new opportunities for flextime and investing in child care services. The Liberals also adopted several elements of our vision for a better housing policy.

These commitments should make their way into the next federal budget.

The Liberals campaigned on a commitment to review wasteful tax expenditures. This review is timely, and could help the party strengthen assets in their election platform. In a ground breaking study

of how the 2015 federal budget breaks down by age, Generation Squeeze identified a wide range of tax expenditures. Many of these are outdated, inefficient, and cost billions of dollars. These funds could be reallocated to pay for policy adaptations to ease the time, money, service and environmental pressures that squeeze younger generations while not touching the budgets for medical care and old age security on which the aging population is counting.

In support of government budgets that work for all generations, Generation Squeeze urged parties during the election to commit to reporting the age distribution of government spending and revenue collection. We are therefore heartened that the Liberals promised to make, “Statistics Canada fully independent” and to, “Work with … other stakeholders to provide a broader range of information.” By annually reporting age breakdowns, the federal

government could create a new society-wide opportunity to assess whether our country is finding the right balance between our investments in young and old; finding the right balance between investing in earlier and later life stages for each citizen; and finding the right balance between investing in the things that make us healthy and productive, as compared to spending more later on when we fall ill or struggle economically.

This assessment is badly needed, because research shows that the federal government currently spends $20,868 per person age 65 plus, $7,185 per person age 45 to 64, and $4,349 per person under age 45.

It is time for a better generational deal. Thankfully, better is always possible in Canada. So says our new prime minister.

anxiety, intimidation and anger are extremely common in adults who are diagnosed with vision loss. The goal of the group is to help transform these feelings into those of confidence and independence through education and group discussions. The program is facilitated by a volunteer who has gone through the process of adjusting to a life with vision loss.

The group offers seniors a way to connect to others experiencing similar challenges. Participants receive empowering, practical and useful information about vision loss and how CNIB services can help, as well as suggestions from other participants on how to reduce the impact of vision loss on their daily lives. There is no cost to participate in the program which will meet once per month.

Emergency training exercise showcases regional partnership

BY SARAH MAETCHE LACOMBE EXPRESS It began with a call to 9-1-1. An alleged hazardous material was seen leaking from a truck parked in an industrial lot along 46th St. in Lacombe, causing concern to a passerby.

Shortly after the call, the Lacombe Fire Department (LFD) was promptly dispatched and following their assessment made from a safe distance, the regional mutual aid system was activated, bringing in multiple resources to deal with the emergency situation.

The above incident that occurred last Thursday afternoon was a planned exercise, a scenario to test mutual aid and cooperation between emergency resources within the Lacombe County region.

Chair of the Lacombe County Mutual Aid Organization and Agrium Safety Advisory Jim von Hollen said the ‘incident’ was merely a training exercise to prepare emergency resources and organizations for the future, for the what if.

“It is just a demonstration of what we train to do, we hope we never have to, but if something ever happens, we have the personnel to deal with it,” he said at the site.

Since 1998, through Lacombe County Mutual Aid, local industry and municipal response departments have been working together to ensure there is a plan in place to respond to emergencies in the region.

The mutual aid organization demonstrates true partnership with a mindset solely to protect each other’s neighbours and keep the public safe. von Hollen said the mutual aid organization could be called to action for many

reasons - from small scale chemical releases to large scale natural disasters like tornadoes.

The exercise on Thursday involved several participating organizations including the Lacombe Police Service, LFD, the City of Lacombe, Red Deer Emergency Services, Alberta Health Services, Lacombe County, Praxair Canda, Dow/ME Global, Agrium, Nova Chemicals, the Alberta Emergency Management Agency, musical theatre students from Lacombe Composite High School and the RCMP. von Hollen said Agrium has specialized expertise and resources to deal with specific incidents involving hydrous ammonia, which is exactly what the scenario within the City of Lacombe involved.

Not long after the first 9-1-1 call was received and resources were called into action, a second call was received about another incident that was occurring outside of the city at the Dow/ME Global/ Praxair Prentiss Site within Lacombe County. Mutual aid resources were quickly dispatched from the Nova Chemicals Joffre Site.

“What we had was an ammonia truck that had been tampered with that was releasing ammonia,” said von Hollen of the City scenario. “The idea was to draw all of our resources and responders into this and then with the detonation set off further away, all of our resources were tied up. It can stretch your resources, so that’s what we were mimicking here today.”

Completed live, in real-time, the emergency responders had to deal with five casualties at the industrial lot. One pumper truck was dispatched, along with two responding ambulances. Once Agrium

“Our response network is closely linked, which is necessary in the case of multiple incidents,” said LFD Chief Ed van Delden.

“The ability to call upon our industry partners for assistance maximizes public safety and minimizes the impact of an emergency.

“Simulation exercises are an excellent opportunity for us to test and improve our response plans. Equally important, is that we’re able to build solid working relationships between a number of partners, before we need them.”

Businesses in Blackfalds recognized in Business of the Year Awards

BY SARAH MAETCHE LACOMBE EXPRESS Businesses in Blackfalds were recognized last Friday evening during the 2015 Business of the Year Awards.

Hosted by the Blackfalds and District Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Blackfalds Economic Development and Tourism Board, the annual event showcased the importance of small businesses in the growing community.

Business owners, delegates and community members gathered at the Blackfalds Community Hall for the celebration.

Blackfalds and District Chamber of Commerce President Carlene Kowalchuk welcomed all the guests gathered at the event. “There were quite a few nominations this year,” she noted. “It’s really good to recognize businesses in Blackfalds.”

During the nomination period, customers were able to make nominations along with fellow businesses. A committee was then put together between the chamber and the Economic Development and Tourism Board to review all of the nominations.

Town of Blackfalds Mayor Melodie Stol welcomed all attendees on behalf of Town council.

“I’m so excited to see how the Chamber of Commerce has grown over the past 10 years,” she said. “It is an integral part of our community.”

Stol said Blackfalds businesses are getting a positive reputation around the province.

“People now travel to Blackfalds as a destination to shop,” she said.

Three Blackfalds businesses were recognized and took home major hardware from the awards ceremony.

The 2015 Business for Service Excellence Award was given to Highway Angels Eats and Treats.

The 2015 Exceptional Retail Product Award was given to Sik Session Board and Apparel. The 2015 Exceptional Community Involvement Award was given to Nurture Salon and Spa. Special recognition was also given to local businesses that made contributions to community recreational groups and individual athletes in Central Alberta and beyond.

City extends land abeyance to C4 for one more year

BY SARAH MAETCHE LACOMBE EXPRESS Plans for the Cranna Community Cultural Centre (C4) continue to move forward.

Lacombe City council approved an extension of the land abeyance agreement at their regular meeting earlier this week.

The year long extension will allow the C4 initiative committee to to accommodate their current plan, which now includes an initial building design concept and a business plan.

The proposed C4 will be a multi-use facility for the community to celebrate the arts, support families, children and enhance the general well being of Lacombe and surrounding area residents. It will house a large childcare facility, the Parent Link Centre and a performing arts venue.

The City and Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS) are temporarily holding in place the

designated land east of City Hall, near the Parkland Regional Library. The agreement expires this fall, which would then release the land from the abeyance agreement.

On behalf of C4, Susan MacDonald, Bev Randell and Richard Schick also presented council with the business and funding model for the facility. Schick said the C4 will be a multi-purpose space that will serve the community in many ways, beyond just the arts.

The facility is planned to house a common area in the entrance with a coffee shop, gift shop and meeting room. The theatre is planned to hold between 550 to 600 seats. The daycare portion will include seven daycare rooms. The visual arts section will include a studio along with a kiln. The current estimated cost of the facility is $31 million.

This month’s theme in my classes has been ‘community helpers’ and I was reading a book to the children about police officers and firefighters.

One little boy put up his hand and said he wanted to be a policeman when he grew up. This brought on an onslaught of information concerning what other careers the children wanted to pursue. One little girl said she wanted to be a firefighter because, “Girls can be firefighters now, cause it used to be just men but then they got smart and let girls help them cause they needed a boss!” On the other hand, one child wanted to be a butterfly and another said she just wanted to, “Grow up and have four babies.”

The Red Deer Kinsmen was originally incorporated on January 19,1959. It consists of male volunteers ranging from 19 years old and up that share the same goal of making our community greater! We truly enjoy what we do and consider ourselves privileged to be able to help our community prosper.

CITY BRIEFS BURMAN UNIVERSITY HOSTS HERR LECTURE SERIES The Herr Lecture Series presents ‘When Doctors Help Us Die: The Canadian Debate’ on Sunday, Nov. 1st at 7:30 p.m. in the Underhill Lecture Hall, McKibbin Centre, at Burman University, (6730 University Drive). The Supreme Court of Canada recently struck down the nation’s laws banning physician-assisted suicide. The newly elected government must now craft legislation in response to this historic ruling.

In their upcoming Herr Lecture presentation Don Carmichael (Professor Emeritus, University of Alberta) and David Goa (Ronning Centre, University of Alberta) will explore the ethical debate that is about to test the nation’s ‘political wisdom and moral conscience’.

MUNICIPAL PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT FEES TO INCREASE IN 2016 At the Oct. 13th regular meeting, City council approved increases to the Planning and Development Department’s fee structure, effective Jan. 1st, 2016. The increase follows a review to ensure that fees better match the cost of service provision, and are consistent with those of surrounding municipalities.

OPEN HOUSE FOR COMMERCIAL INPUT As part of its Land Use Bylaw review, the City

of Lacombe is hosting a drop-in consultation session geared towards businesses and commercial properties to explore ideas on how Lacombe should build in the future.

The open house will be held on Oct. 29th from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 5019B 51 St. “We have spent the past few years updating a number of the City’s long range planning documents,” said Planning and Development Manager Lyla Peter. “We are now focusing on the Land Use Bylaw, which contains the regulations for how a property can be developed.”

The City will also be hosting a residential session on Nov. 4th and an industrial session on Nov. 17th. More details on these sessions will be made available closer to the date.

TRAVEL A Disney cruise - a truly magical vacation A Disney fantasy - excellent! This is something you hear a lot about on a Disney Cruise. Your servers in the dining rooms do not ask if you if enjoyed your meal, they ask if it was excellent; the stateroom attendants ask what they can do to make your holiday excellent and the rest of the crew do not say, “Have a good or a great day”, they say, “Have an excellent day”. For Disney, very good is not good enough!

I recently had the opportunity to travel with 10 of my family members on the Disney Fantasy for a seven-night eastern Caribbean cruise and it was truly a vacation to remember. Out of the 11 people on the trip, 10 had never cruised before and seven had never been out of Canada, so much of the fun for me was seeing the reactions when something new was encountered. From the second you board a Disney ship and your name is announced for everyone to hear until the moment you disembark seven days later, there is no shortage of effort to make your holiday memorable.

Our itinerary included stops at St. Maarten, St. Thomas and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay and with the exception of brief periods of what the locals call ‘Caribbean liquid sunshine’, the weather was perfect! All of us had days to remember at each port.

Since this was Disney, there was no shortage of activities for everyone on the three sea days. By far the most popular area was the pool deck and the main attraction there was the Aqua Duck water coaster. This combination water slide/ rollercoaster takes you over the edge of the ship and around the deck. Line-ups tend to be long in the afternoon, but during the dinner sittings, we could ride it virtually with no wait. The Mickey and Donald pools were not the largest shop pools and were crowded, however they provided a great vantage point to watch the first-run Disney movies on the huge screen and they provided respite from the 30 degree heat. Nemo’s Reef (for the younger kids) and the Aqua Lab were a blast and it was difficult to pull the kids away from any of the water parks.

Disney’s kids’ program is second to none. From nursery-aged children to teens there is something for all of them in the ‘It’s a Small World’ nursery (up to three-years-old), the Oceaneer Club and Lab (ages three to 12), the ‘Edge’ (for the tweens) or ‘Vibe’ for the teenagers.

Security is not a problem here as the system Disney only allows designated parents/guardians to pick the kids up.

What would a Disney cruise be without Disney character meet and greets?

Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and the rest of the gang show up at designated places and scheduled times throughout the cruise so there are lots of opportunities for photo ops. You can also dance with them during the many shows they have mid-ship. The Sail Away show at the beginning of the cruise was amazing (as were the other shows), however, one of the few rain storms we had brought it inside rather than on the pool deck.

One thing we discovered was that not all Disney characters are on all ships, so I didn’t have the opportunity to see my princess, Snow White.

The food on the Fantasy was excellent!

The rotational dining through the three main dining rooms (The Royal Court, The Enchanted Garden and the Animator’s Palate) and having our serving staff follow us to all three of them was unique.

Each restaurant had a different atmosphere and menu, yet we had the same consistency of service each night. Our servers were exceptional and made each meal a highlight. Each of the kids were made to feel special; my oldest grandson would get his meals cut up by our assistant server (which he protested mildly, but loved); my granddaughter was treated like a princess every meal and my youngest grandson (who would rather stay in the room) was taken care of royally. The Animator’s Palate gave us all the opportunity to be animators on the

last night and we also had the chance to have a conversation with Crush the Turtle - Dude!

If you were to ask the 11 of us what our favourite part of the cruise was, there would be 11 different answers. I could think of 10 on my own; my oldest grandson having a conversation with Crush, my youngest grandson and granddaughter swimming like fish in the ocean and the rest of us being so excited when we would recall our days at supper - we could hardly contain our excitement.

Excellence is a very lofty standard to try to attain and with 11 people traveling together you would think it would be tough to please us all, but there was nothing Mickey Mouse about this cruise.

The Barenaked Ladies get set to hit Red Deer stage

BY ERIN FAWCETT LACOMBE EXPRESS After 27 years together and with more than 14 million albums sold, the Barenaked Ladies have hit the road, and have included a Red Deer stop along the way.

The group plays the ENMAX Centrium Nov. 2nd.

The Barenaked Ladies, which is comprised of Ed Robertson, Tyler Stewart, Kevin Hearn and Jim Creeggan, have seen much success with their recently released album, Silverball.

Creeggan, bassist for the band, said inspiration for the album came from many facets.

“On this latest record, I think the inspiration came from my community. In a way to keep in contact with my kids when I’m on tour, I became the co-chair of my kid’s school council which means kind of running things, organizing events and all that,” he said. “One thing that happened was - this wasn’t initially an inspiration but it was something that was on my mind that really brought me to write a song about it - we were having a Facebook debate. It really wasn’t a debate, it was sort of really nasty and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. My community was something I loved and here people were getting hurt online and everybody could see it.

“So I started writing about that and what came out was, you know, I kind of hit the wall with the negativity and basically moaning about how much that hurt.

So I just started to write about things that I loved about my community and the things that were worth fighting for and savouring and appreciating. And so I wrote Narrow Streets. I basically started looking out the window and saying ‘That’s what I love about my neighbourhood, and that’s what I love about my neighbourhood.’ So I think by getting involved it really gave me a direction emotionally and an investment that really triggered off a song that had meaning for me, just as participating in my neighbourhood gives me more meaning in my life.”

Being together for nearly three decades, the Barenaked Ladies have overcome many challenges and have continued to see much success.

“I think something that is always relevant is playing live and we’ve always seen ourselves as a live band. I mean we love recording as well but I think we’ve weathered the changes (over the years) mainly because we’ve been going out playing for people in person,” said Creeggan. “As far

When we make our records, that’s our art. It’s our chance to say where we are. Coming up with new material every record is, I think what keeps us moving forward and we can’t help ourselves but to react to the music that’s going on right now. I think that we as a four-piece really find a way to write, but allow ourselves to be influenced by contemporary sounds.”

Being early on in their current tour, Creeggan said it is enjoyable, but the being on the road for long periods of time does have its challenges.

“What I like about being on the road is I mean, it is a challenge - the travel is a big hardship. We’re often squished together on a bus which is better than the van, so it can be difficult but once you get out on stage and you see the fans who’ve come to see you, it makes it all worthwhile,” he said. “Other things I like about touring is going to special places in the town, you know a restaurant, or a park. I’ve been

looking for a lot of parks these days to go running and it just gives me a real sense of the place and a snapshot (of the city). Also, visiting family - I have some family in Red Deer so I’m going to go visit Katherine - Katherine, I’ll be looking for you,” he laughed. “So yes, it’s a chance to really check in with the country.”

Meanwhile, for Creeggan, music has been in his life since he was a young age and his love for it stuck early on.

“My mom was a piano teacher and so I’d come home from school every day and there would be a kid banging out Bach or Beethoven in their way. I think I just accepted that - that sound and that music was a part of my house. I think it also gave me a real sense of hearing music from people firsthand, not through a recording necessarily and that’s why I’ve always been really interested in recording and live performance because I really love to hear how people interpret things and hear their sound,” he said.

“In a way, when people are playing

music, it’s like hearing them think. And so my mom gave me a lot there, and my dad played piano by ear. He had his handful of songs he’d like to touch on every day. And so again, that really gave me a sense of music. I was lucky to have a great music program in my public school. We had real musicians coming in and teaching the kids which really changed my life forever and I’ll be forever grateful. That’s why I play the bass. That’s how I met Ed and that’s why we’re the band really. We met each other at a music camp that was put on by the school board,” he added.

“And then getting into it for a living, I was training to be a symphonic bass player. I got really into studying to be a bass player in the symphony and when I started playing with Steve and Ed I think they had an ambition to actually do it for real and I didn’t consider that you can do that but I got into it because they had that foresight and we just never stopped.”

Does your doctor always know best?

Faced with a medical decision, patients normally allow their doctor to decide on treatment, assuming he or she, “Always knows best”.

But Consumer Report on Health claims this approach rarely works.

Doctors simply are unable to keep up with the flood of new information.

Consequently, some decisions must be based on the patient’s priorities, not just the doctor’s. This process might even decrease the cost of medical care. Often the problem is communication.

For instance, a study of 1,057 doctor/patient visits, including 3,552 clinical decisions, found that only 9% provided the patient with enough information to

And women in their 40s should discuss the pros and cons of mammography before agreeing to one.

Every year a large numbers of MRI’s are performed

for low back pain. But they are not needed unless the procedure is required for a treatment decision. It’s well known that an MRI may show a disk problem, but it may not be the cause of the pain. Many patients have this abnormality without back pain. Besides, most back pain subsides without any treatment. Ninety per cent of hernias occur in men but how many require surgery?

For years it’s been standard practice to operate to avoid bowel obstruction.

But a study which followed several thousand men for several years discovered that, contrary to medical opinion, only 1% per year suffered from this compli-

cation. Of course you must always ask your doctor, “What happens if I decide against treatment?”

For instance, an 80-yearold man with early prostate cancer may live another 15 years without treatment. In the interim he may die of something else. He may also decide that he does not want to take the risk of surgery and end up in diapers. For women with early breast cancer a ‘lumpectomy’ may be an option rather than complete removal of the breast. Some however, feel more assured if the entire breast is removed.

The main point is to be an informed patient so there are no surprises.

Local Colour series: man recounts his journey to Ukraine

BY SARAH MAETCHE LACOMBE EXPRESS As the first installment of the Local Colour speaker series, hosted by the Friends of the Mary C. Moore Public Library, Lacombian Warren Kreway shared his experience of traveling to the Ukraine to a group gathered at the LMC on Oct. 22nd.

Kreway began his address stating that visiting the Ukraine was like going back in time.

“When I was a young man, I always wondered what it would be like to live in the past,” he said. “Life is more simple.

I want to show you what the Ukraine is actually like.”

Kreway visited the Ukraine, the country of his heritage, for one month in May 2014.

He was part of a group of doctors traveling to the country on behalf of Medical Mercy Canada. The group visited several villages and while the doctors gave out medical supplies and assistance, Kreway found his place on the trip - working with youth and students at schools.

Kreway explained that in the Ukraine, there is a generational struggle.

“It’s a very old country with old values.

After generations and generations of living in this country, the younger generation is trying to change and modernize, but the parents hang on to their old values. They are struggling to educate their children and the kids are realizing they want to come up to modern standards.”

He also noticed that although the students had ambition and will to change their lives, they lacked educational supplies, in particular sporting equipment.

LOCAL COLOUR - Lacombian Warren Kreway recounted his journey to the Ukraine during a presentation at the LMC on Oct. 22nd.

Sarah Maetche/Lacombe Express Kreway also began a flag signing project on his trip, with students signing two Ukrainian flags to be brought back to Canada. He first thought he would bring the signed flags back to Lacombe, “But then I thought it needs to go a little bit further,” he added.

The flags were presented to the Wolf Creek Public Schools board, in acknowledgement of linking the two countries together. The gift was then returned to the Ukraine this year, when one of the doctors Kreway first traveled with deliv-

ered Canadian flags signed by 300 local students, dignitaries and mayors. Since then, a pen pal program has also been launched between the students in the two countries.

“It’s all about the kids,” said Kreway of the Ukraine projects he has launched in Lacombe. “It is an incredible passion to see the joy in their eyes when you give them the chance to reach out of themselves to a different culture and a different country.” news@lacombeexpress.com

Strong showing for Generals in home opener

BY ZACHARY CORMIER LACOMBE EXPRESS It’s been a long off season, but the Bentley Generals don’t seem to have noticed.

The Senior Men’s AAA hockey club played their first home game of the season at the Bentley Arena on Saturday night, coming away with a 6-2 victory over the visiting Fort Saskatchewan Chiefs.

“I thought we played a full 60 minute game tonight,” said Head Coach Ryan Tobin after the game.

The Generals went into the game with a 1-0-1 record following a tough shootout loss to the Innisfail Eagles on Friday night.

“We weren’t happy with our game last night so as a coach you always look for a response,” Tobin said, adding that his team responded well during Saturday night’s game, especially after the Chiefs jumped to an early 1-0 lead just three minutes into the first period.

“I don’t think it’s so much we started slow. It was a great bench all night. We stuck with it and the key to the weekend was the way that we responded to things.”

And boy did the Generals respond, as 10 different players contributed with at least one point.

Cody Esposito got the scoring started for the Generals with nine minutes left in the opening frame to tie the game at one.

From there it was all Bentley.

The Generals added another tally five minutes later to take a 2-1 lead, which they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.

The Generals were very strong in the offensive zone, peppering Fort Saskatchewan goalie Tanner Schalin with as many shots as they could.

By the end of the first period, they had put 16 pucks on target.

At the end of the second, that number stood at 42.

Unfortunately for the Generals, Schalin was lights out, especially in the second period when he turned aside all but one of the 26 shots he faced. The only one that managed to get by him was a Josh Smith one-timer that was so hard it probably could have gotten past anyone without superhuman reflexes.

Despite Schalin’s performance, the Generals wouldn’t quit. They put 57 shots towards the goal in the game.

“A little more traffic, a little more determined effort to get pucks there,” Tobin said.

But the most important thing was the Generals found ways

to score. They scored goals on one-timers, breakaways, rebounds and on the PP. It was Esposito, who many consider the team’s enforcer, that opened the scoring for them in their first home ice appearance of the season.

And Esposito’s name appeared on the score sheet again on Teegan Moore’s third period beauty when Moore picked up a pass in the neutral zone from Scott Doucet, who had just received it from Esposito, and took off past the Fort Saskatchewan defenders on a breakaway. Moore barreled into the offensive zone, made a quick move on Schalin,

and popped between the goalie’s pad and blocker for the score.

And that effort resulted in a game where the Generals scored six goals on a goalie who managed to post a .950 save percentage, an impressive feat to be sure.

They were passing well and playing physical. They never took their foot off the gas.

Bentley was no slouch on defence or special teams either.

The defensive core allowed only 32 shots against and goaltender Thomas Heemskirk was solid, posting a .938 save percentage to earn the victory.

Their power play units capital-

ized on the opportunities they were given and went 1/2 on the evening.

Even the penalty kill was firing on all cylinders. The Army’s PK didn’t allow a single goal on six outings, and on a few of the earlier ones they probably took more shots than they allowed.

Overall, Bentley looked like a team that can compete for the Allan Cup. They responded well when they went down early and they kept possession of the puck throughout the majority of the game, both of which are key components to a potential championship team. zcormier@lacombeexpress.com

Wranglers’ veteran on pace to post his highest point in league

Bryce Boguski wouldn’t describe himself as a high-scoring hockey player, but so far this season he is sure playing like one.

Although the season is still young, the four-year Blackfalds Wranglers’ veteran is currently on pace to post his highest point totals in his Heritage Junior Hockey League career.

“I’ve had a good start to this season so I’m hoping to continue that,” said the 20-year-old Eckville native.

Boguski grew up on a farm about 45 minutes west of Red Deer and from a very early age, he knew he wanted to be a hockey player.

“I’ve been interested in hockey since I was little,” he remembered.

Growing up, Boguski said hockey was just part of his life. There was just ‘something about it’ that drew him in.

Whether he was competing at the highest level or just playing on the outdoor rink that his family built in the pasture at their farm, Boguski just loved to be on the ice.

“I started competitive when I was four so from when I could skate I was right in the mix,” he said.

Boguski played minor hockey in Eckville from Tyke all the way up to his first year of Bantam, when he headed east to Sylvan Lake to join their Bantam AA team.

From there it was on wards and upwards for the young farm kid. When he was 15 he made the Minor Midget AAA team in Red Deer before finishing off his minor hockey career with the Sylvan Lake Midget AA Lakers. But Boguski was

determined not to let his hockey career end there.

“I wanted to push myself as far as my skill level would let me go and I was lucky enough to land a spot in a competitive league,” he explained.

After coming up short of a roster spot on the Grande Prairie Storm Junior A team, the young forward was asked to come play for the Blackfalds Wranglers Junior B team and the rest, as they say, is history.

“Brian (Lenz, former coach and current president of the Wranglers,) really wanted me to come so I made my way there and had a blast.”

Since coming into the league in 2012, Boguski has morphed into a solid point per game player, though it hasn’t always been that way.

“I’ve changed as a player. In minor hockey I was a scorer. Then in Midget AAA, I got smaller and no one else did so I just turned into a bit of an aggressor,” he laughed.

Now, he said after pausing to think for a bit, he considers himself more of a high-energy defensive forward.

But that defensive style of play hasn’t stopped him from making waves offensively this season.

In eight games, number 21 has scored a total of eight goals and added three assists for a team-leading 11 points on the season.

Only time will tel if he can continue that kind of production throughout the season but you can be sure that event if he stops scoring, the veteran forward from Eckville will continue to contribute to the Wranglers’ success both on and off the ice. zcormier@lacombeexpress.com

Variety of sources of home design inspiration People can often have a pre-conceived idea about interior design.

Often when I answer the ‘what do you do’ question eyes get wide and husbands of wives generally run for cover dragging their ladies behind them. The comments range from ‘You must be expensive!’ or ‘I’d love to have you over to my house!’
