the family that lost its home and possessions.

Guthrie said firefighters from CLFD and Creston Fire Rescue were relieved to learn that the four people who had been in the house when the fire broke out had all been able to exit the building without injury.

A total of eight residents, including three adults, three teenagers and two toddlers, were left with nothing “but the clothes on their back,” he said.

Museum touring Pioneer Cemetery CRESTON MUSEUM

It just wouldn’t be Halloween without a visit to a graveyard, now, would it?

That’s precisely why the Creston Museum is offering its first-ever cemetery tour on Saturday.

“Pioneer Cemetery is a fascinating place,” says museum manager (and tour leader) Tammy Hardwick.

“We have strong ties to this family,” he said. “Bridget Blackmore, Margaret’s (who lived in the house) daughter, joined our fire department in 2012 and is currently doing her recruit training with the Spokane Fire Department. This training is extremely difficult.

To allow her to focus on successfully completing the training and start the career of her dreams, Bridget’s daughter has been staying with Grandma Margaret in the house.

“Dustin Blackmore, Margaret’s son, also recently joined our department as a junior and is already showing signs of following in his big sister’s footsteps.

“Bridget’s dad was one of the original Canyon-Lister FD firefighters when the department was formed about 30 years ago.”

Guthrie and his team set up a Facebook page to solicit dona-

tions and also created a Go Fund Me account to accept cash donations. Many of the volunteers worked through the weekend to accept and pick up donations.

“We brought a trailer to town to pick up one woman’s furniture donation,” he said.

The tour starts at 2 p.m. on Halloween. Admission is by donation, with a suggested donation of $5. It will last about an hour, and goes ahead rain or shine. Guests are reminded that the ground in Pioneer Cemetery is uneven, and good, sturdy footwear is highly recommended.

Guthrie spoke in glowing terms about the supportive community in the Creston Valley, but wanted to specifically acknowledge employers who have volunteer firefighters on staff.

“That call came in at the worst time possible (about 11 a.m.) because it’s when most of our members are at work,” he said. “But their employers are

Kootenay Co-op seeking local food producers

Nadine Harris BenRabha flew the coop from Creston last year and has now found a home at a co-op, Nelson’s Kootenay Co-op.

BenRabha played a key role in the Harris family farm’s business ventures, which include Kootenay Meadows organic cheese and milk production. Her focus on marketing gives her firsthand experience in her new role as the co-op’s True Local co-ordinator.

“I am very excited to join the Kootenay Co-op,” said BenRabha.

“Kootenay Meadows Farm has had a special relationship with the co-op from the beginning. The co-op gave us invaluable advice and support long before our processing facility

had even broken ground, and played a huge role in giving us the confidence to take the leap. It will be immensely rewarding to help others leverage this special support that the co-op offers, and see how it can help their businesses succeed.”

The co-op created the position of True Local co-ordinator to help it triple its sales of local products in its new Nelson Commons location.

Strengthening local food systems has long been part of the co-op’s mandate. The co-op’s guiding principles state that local growers or processors should receive preferential treatment as suppliers, and the co-op works hard to nurture new and existing local vendors.

In June 2013 the co-op took this commitment to the next level with the creation of its True Local program,

launched in response to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s changes to its definition of “local” which allows retailers to market a product as local even if it is sourced from as far as 3,000 kilometres away.

The Co-op preferred to create the True Local program, assuring its member-owners and other customers that their food was being sourced close to home and that their food dollars were being invested locally.

The boundaries for the program extend west to Grand Forks, east to the Creston Valley, northwest to Nakusp and the Arrow Lakes, northeast from Kaslo to Trout Lake and Johnsons Landing, and south to the U.S. border.

“Purchasing from True Local suppliers is an investment in the future of our food security and the economy of the surrounding area,” said co-op board president Jon Steinman. “Co-op members have shown enormous support for the program and over the last year the co-op made payments of more than $2.5 million to local suppliers, including $1.78 million to more than 100 local farmers and food producers.”

BenRabha is looking forward to meeting local suppliers and learning how the co-op can partner with them.

“This is a brand new position so we have the exciting opportunity to work together to define how the True Local program and the co-op as a whole can best work to support the local economy,” she said.

The Kootenay Co-op is hosting an event for prospective and current suppliers Nov. 18 in Nelson. All interested producers and processors are invited to attend. For more information, contact BenRabha at nadine@kootenay.coop.

•When police located a person reported to be using drugs on 19th Avenue North, it was determined no drugs were involved.

•A neighbours’ dispute broke out on Ash Street when one complained about the other using his driveway to make turnarounds.

October 20 •A neighbours’ dispute on Highway 3A required police attention.

•A driver’s displeasure at being tailgated by a semi on Highway 3/95 led to a verbal dispute.

•A semi was reported to be blocking Highway 3 in Kitchener.

•Police are investigating a report that hunters might have been shot at in the Dodge Creek forest service road area.

•An Erickson Street resident complained about unwanted phone calls.

•A vehicle reported to be driving erratically and speeding on Highway 3/95 was located and the driver was warned.

•A vehicle caught the soft shoulder on Highway 21 near Hurry Road and went down the ditch, hitting a house at the bottom. No injuries were reported.

•A complaint by a person who said he was being followed on Seventh Avenue South was resolved when police investigated.

October 21 •A Silvercrest Road resident reported a fraud after signing up for a free trial for Internet protection and getting billed for $5,000.

•An airplane that crashed circa 1984 was found by hunters in the Mount Crawley area.

•Damage was done to a trailer on Vancouver Street.

•Charges are being considered after a semi drove off Erickson Road and into a ditch.

October 22 •An argument between drivers broke out on Highway 3 at 33rd Avenue when an aggressive driver stopped to confront another.

•A vehicle passed a stopped school bus on Erickson Road.

•Police were called to a house fire in the 4800 block of 10th Street in Lister.

•Police intervened in a couple’s argument on the railroad tracks in the 400 block of 16th Avenue South and recommended counseling.

•Dangerous debris on the roadside at Walker Bridge on Highway 3 was reported.

October 23 •When police checked a reported suspicious vehicle in the 300 block of 15th Avenue North they found the driver was sitting and doing crafts.

October 24 •A well-being check on Vancouver Street revealed the resident was OK. •Electronic equipment and Halloween candy were stolen in a break-in to a Uri Road residence in Wynndel.

•A family dispute was reported on 21st Avenue North.

•Youths who were taking a shortcut through a yard in the 400 block of Ninth Avenue North were warned, as were their parents.

October 25 •A well-being check in Wynndel revealed the residents were fine.

•An Erickson resident consulted with police after receiving a cheque in the mail with instructions to make some purchases and keep the remainder of the money. He was advised the cheque was a scam and the cheque was destroyed.

•A brush-cutting machine damaged a power pole near Highway 21 at Mallory Road.

•A landlord-tenant dispute broke out on 15th Avenue South after the tenant was found to be driving over the property’s septic tank.

Creston Community Forest Management Plan Public Review The Creston Community Forest will be receiving an expansion to its existing management area and an increase to its current Allowable Annual Cut (AAC) of 15,000 m3/ year. Who said that?

When I want evidence that all is not well in the world I typically turn to sports pages on the Internet so I peruse readers’ comments following stories. It is a never-ending source of fascination to read critical responses and insults from mostly anonymous posters. Talk is cheap, and never cheaper when one doesn’t have to identify oneself.

Sports websites aren’t the only areas that provide such entertainment.

Browse through comments on, say, National Public Radio’s site and contributors get downright vicious. The typical listener of NPR, apparently, is a Democrat, so Republicans lurk on the site, taking umbrage at every perceived “left wing” comment.

Sometimes the comments come as a surprise, though. The other day I went to the CBC website to read about the recent deaths of three children who suffocated on their Alberta farm. They were playing in a grain truck during harvest and were covered by grain. Attempts to dig them out were fruitless. It was a horrific incident that had a level of bizarreness to it. The parents, devout Christians who were homeschooling the three girls (and their younger brother, who was not killed), had expressed gratitude for their community’s support and said they took solace knowing they would be reunited with their kids in an afterlife.

The story that caught my attention was written a week or so after the tragedy and focused on a call from the Alberta’s Farmworkers Union for the province to do more to protect children on farms. It did seem a little odd, the story and the demand, because the kids weren’t working, but playing.

Readers picked up on the union leader’s timing, most taking offense at what they considered to be grandstanding on his part. Others had other opinions, too.

“I find this union’s exploitation of this tragic incident very disturbing,” wrote one.

“I find your callousness disturbing,” responded another.

A third chimed in. “Or, you could just be a good parent who knows their children, what they are

Lorne Eckersley doing and where they are. Or do children mind themselves on the farm cause everyone is too busy being a farmer. Ludicrous.”

Then another responded to the union issue.

“How about the nanny state just keep its nose out of things? More rules is never the answer.”

Another writer commented, ignoring the fact the children were not working when they died.

“It’s not about more rules, it’s about the same rules for all workers.

How can one possibly justify the lack of workers safety rules for farm workers?”

One commenter, again anonymous, took the opportunity to defend life on the farm, and then reiterated his opinions a dozen or more times as he responded to other comments.

“Kids have lived on farms as long as there has been farms, and unfortunately, accidents happen when kids play at home. That’s all this is, kids, playing at home when tragedy struck.”

Not surprisingly, others took offense at the laissez faire attitude.

For instance: “Simply wrong response by a very stupid T in BC (the previous writer’s nom de plume).

“How about if these children were your relatives?

“Accidents happen, yeah, that is why we call them accidents.

“People died by the thousands because of no seat belts, that is why we call them accidents.

“How stupid and I mean very stupid can some people like you actually be... You take the first prize here, my friend.”

T in BC replied.

“Well, considering I lived around farms my entire life, and have family friends that I grew up with that owned farms, which we all played on, I know how dangerous farms can be. That isn’t to say, that no family should live and work on a farm because it’s dangerous. And to compare this to not wearing a seatbelt, shows just how ignorant you are to the facts of life on a farm.

“The fact remains, kids will be kids.

This was a tragic example of just how dangerous farms are, but to say that more regulation is the solution is short sighted at best. By that argument, every playground should also be heavily regulated, as children can be hurt whilst playing there as well. I don’t doubt for a second these parents didn’t tell their kids about the dangers around them, however any parent that has lost their child to a preventable accident would think they should have done more. I’m not saying they did everything they could, but I also realize what life is like growing up on a farm...something you obviously don’t by your choice of examples.”

There is, of course, never any real end to these threads of opinions.

They either peter out after several days or the website host closes down comments.

Other commenters accused the parents of neglect and called for criminal charges to be laid.

Curiously, all of the comments were made before any investigation has indicated just how this tragedy happened. None knew more facts than what news reports carried, but all felt compelled to comment before an investigation had been complete.

In a quick scroll through the comments I didn’t find one poster’s actual name. All comments were made in the safety of anonymity.

We don’t publish anonymous letters in the Advance and I would be much happier if that policy extended to Internet sites as well.

Celebrate Reformation Day, not Halloween To the Editor: For those interested in a positive focus on Oct. 31, rather than a briefly amusing and unsatisfying occult downgrade, I would suggest considering Reformation Day. Reformation Day has been commemorated for centuries. These centuries, which have preceded us and shaped the world we are living in today, contained the exhausting labors, unjust sufferings and expensive sacrifices of men and women who responded affirmatively to the divine call to throw back the darkness of human imaginations and religious inventions that overwhelmed society by channeling the light of God’s Word into the world around them.

Through this lengthy enlightening process, political and religious oppressions were reduced and freedoms increased, religious hubris and blasphemy pretending to be expressions of truth were repelled, intellectual and scientific progress was given ground to advance, and priceless, vivifying liberties and responsibilities were given appropriate protections. In those areas of the world that accepted the upgrade, these great effects were given their energy, and where still truly accepted, we all enjoy those benefits to this day.

As preference for falsehood instead of truth still exists, as lust for power still corrupts, as the inclination to justify tyranny still operates, and as real evil exists and always tries to defame and divert good into its own uses, our need for the reformation has not come to an end. The reformation is not over.

they had also been there for hours, one man since before lunch. He wanted to go out for something to eat, but was afraid to lose his place in the lineup.

At no time did any staff speak to us or indicate what was going on.

Occasionally, a nurse would check to see if there was a new name in the basket, and would process that person before disappearing again.

Three hours later, my name was called and I was shown to a room with two beds and some chairs.

Great, I thought, I will soon see the doctor. I sat in that room for another hour and a quarter. I was getting hungry, thirsty and cranky! Finally, the doctor came in, quickly checked my problem, referred me to a specialist and OK’d my prescription refill, all in under five minutes.

In the community I moved from, also a small rural town, they also had a doctor shortage when two doctors retired and another moved back to England. They set up a walk-in clinic, with each of the doctors taking a turn one morning a week. It opened at 9 a.m., usually with a lineup outside the door. The receptionist took your information and gave you a number and an approximate time of your appointment, spaced 15 minutes apart. Patients were seen on a first come, first served basis. If you were a later arrival, you had time to go and do some shopping or have a coffee before being seen. This system worked very well, and took the pressure off the hospital emergency station. The walk-in clinic was great for minor ailments or having a prescription filled, leaving the hospital free to deal with real emergencies.

I’m just wondering if there isn’t a better way for Creston to treat its seniors and newcomers that need medical attention. Is a walk-in clinic something that could work here?

Canada may Walk-in clinic be respected would lessen once again ER waits To the Editor: I am a senior and moved to Creston a year ago. I have been to the various medical clinics in town trying to find a doctor, and have been told there are none available and there are no waiting lists. I was told to go to the emergency department at the hospital if I have a problem.

A few weeks ago, I did have a small problem that needed attention, and I needed a prescription refilled. I went to the hospital at 1 p.m. thinking that the morning rush might be over and it wouldn't take too long to see a doctor. The wait was very long indeed. I had not thought to bring my reading glasses, but I read almost every article in the available magazines until my eyes were burning with fatigue. Dr. Phil was on TV trying to solve a personal crisis but I couldn’t hear the program as the volume was too low (this is OK, as I realize a loud program would be very disrupting). Chitchat with other folks waiting to be seen revealed that

To the Editor: Election 2015 is behind us and the voices from across Canada were heard loud and clear. After nearly a decade of Stephen Harper’s dictatorial rule and his many damaging policies, we finally have sent him packing.

It is my hope that the new government will deliver what they promised and also what a strong majority of Canadians want: action to reduce greenhouse gas emission, the confrontation of climate change, support for the renewable energy sector and support for carbon pricing through carbon taxes. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and our new government have a huge job ahead of them and will need our full co-operation.

“Our faith in the people is strong.

And our dreams for this beautiful country will never die.” Justin Trudeau’s father Pierre Elliott Trudeau spoke these words.

My faith in Elizabeth May as a minister of the environment is also very strong. Together with the new government, we can make our Canada great and respected again.

‘Free’ trade has cost Canada billions To the Editor: Let’s hope Justin Trudeau has a close look at the Trans-Pacific Partnership before he signs it. All indications are that it is an extension and enlargement of previous “free” trade bills, and will replace them. He may discover, to his dismay, that far from an advantage for Canadian workers, it may be another form of government by the multi-national corporations.

So how did Canada fare under the North Atlantic Freed Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA)? Since 1994, Canada has paid millions in compensation to transnational corporations under Chapter 11 of NAFTA. Who were the winners in this government giveaway?

The U.S. Ethyl Corporation received $251 million over use of MMT, a neuron toxic gasoline additive; the U.S. firm S.D. Myers received $6 billion for banning the export of PCBs; Dow Chemical sued Quebec for banning the use of a harmful pesticide (settlement pending); the U.S. Abitibi Bowater paper mill sued and received $130 million because Newfoundland removed the free use of hydroelectric power; American oil company Lone Pine Resources sued Quebec, claiming $250 million because of a moratorium on the exploration of oil and gas in the St. Lawrence River; California’s Sunbelt Corporation challenged the ban by B.C. on bulk water exports, demanding $10 billion in damages; Canada must export 70 per cent of its oil and natural gas to the United States, at the same time importing to meet its needs and not reducing production to save our planet from greenhouse gases; and the Bank of Canada, created in 1935 to help our government through interest-free affordable loans, must now follow the dictates of private European and U. S. banks. In addition, privatization companies have launched moves against Canada Post and our medicare program. How free is that?

This is the reality of globalization and free trade. Rather than employment and prosperity, Canada lost thousands of well-paid, permanent jobs in the manufacturing sector; wages stagnated and outsourcing increased.

Under the TPP, the cost of our medication will be affected as drug patents are extended, our public services, such as CBC and Canada Post, could be affected and our environmental laws, already pathetically weak and out of date, will be stalled.

Governments seem to relish becoming puppets manipulated by large corporations at the expense of sovereignty and their labour force. Why not fair trade instead of free trade?

At stake are the protection of water, the environment, public services, health care, roads, bridges, sewer systems, supply management and genetically modified food imports.

Free trade is the euphemism for free government by multinational corporations.

Spirit’s fruits require continual cultivation

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

Many years ago, I had my first conscious encounter with the joy of the Lord. It wasn’t tied to any particular event, but was an attitude I held within over a period of months. I was pregnant at the time and what I learned affected me so much I named the child I was carrying Joy. It’s hard to describe what I was feeling, but this sense of joy kept bubbling up inside of me, little bits of effervescence that tickled and showed me life from a different paradigm.

I realize now it wasn’t just joy I was experiencing but also peace, love, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance, all in their nascent forms.

I’ve always heard the Galatians passage read as though there are nine fruits of the Spirit. The word fruit can imply one, as in the fruit of the tree, or many; there is a fruit stand. Fruits (with an s) is also used interchangeably with fruit to mean many. Personally, I think there is only one fruit of the spirit; some aspects can be more prominent, but you can’t have one without the other eight.

The Christian life has to display such fruit. In Matthew 7:16, Jesus warns against false prophets, saying we will recognize them by their bad fruits, and by extension, those who are sincerely following Christ will be recognized by their good fruits.

The continuous cultivation of fruit is work as I have learned since moving to B.C. There are pruning, watering, fertilizing and then dealing with whatever circumstances the weather throws out. An untended tree can still produce fruit, but it is often small

“A universe of pure hatred” where no fruit of the Spirit can grow. Is my fruit grown on holy wood or on Hollywood?

Watching stories where people are motivated by anger to right wrongs builds those same feelings in me. News clips of violent protests, listening to people spewing hatred and contempt for others, affects me and my fruit production. What is my spiritual nourishment?

Hearing about injustice should motivate me to act, but will I respond with love or hatred, drawing men closer to God or pushing them further away?

“Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

Moving Along Together Series 2 • Week 6 Rehearsal: Repetition and Attention

This is the sixth of eight articles being sponsored through TAPS as part of a Moving Along Together Program (for people experiencing memory changes and their caregivers). This is funded by a Columbia Basin Trust Social Grant. In this second series we’ll be sharing these ideas to stimulate discussion and inspiration through exploring our understanding of memory, what affects it and some current information on ways to improve or maintain it.

Actors, presenters, dancers, students and each of us when learning something new have unique approaches to ‘remembering’ for later recall. As life-long learners, we do this at every stage of our lives whether for physical or verbal information and for simple or complex information. It is vital as living beings that we adapt to our surroundings. In some cases we seem to ‘absorb’ what we need to know without consciously ‘learning it’, while for other applications we engage our senses through various strategies to ‘remember’.

In an earlier article we talked about the complexity of memory and the ever growing body of new understandings of how scientists think that it works. The data on this keeps evolving, for example, the emergence of the idea of the plasticity of the brain to change and heal.

Researchers talk about short term, working and long term memory. Each are implicated differently as our brains change through the aging process perhaps or by any number of stressful factors. For our purposes in these articles, we’re focusing on short term memory changes.

Whatever the cause or causes of forgetting over the short-term may be, there is consensus that it can severely limit the amount of new information that we can retain over brief periods of time.

In the field of optimizing brain function, rehearsal is a recommended strategy and practice. Rehearsing is the process where information is kept in short-term memory by mentally

repeating it either silently or out loud. When the information is repeated each time, it is re-entered into short-term memory, thus keeping that information for another 10 to 20 seconds (the average storage time for short-term memory). Our ‘working’ memory is dependent on this.

Try this: Think about this phone number: 724-9650. Now, do this math exercise: count backwards from 39 in threes. That is a simple attention exercise. We have to really pay attention to get it right and remember, repetition is an extension of attention.

OK, what was that phone number again? Likely you can’t remember, because I didn’t ask you to memorize it, and I didn’t give you anytime to practice it. But if I had asked you to memorize it, what would you have immediately started to do?

Repeat it. You could also repeat counting backwards because you have practiced counting backwards before. In order to be good at rehearsal you have to practice paying attention.

Through repetition your attention is focused in a purposeful manner. This results in better retention.

Memory Tip: How to Rehearse. If you are a naturally verbal person, say the numbers out loud to yourself; if you are visually strong, picture yourself dialing the number or writing the date on the calendar; now your motor memory is engaged too. For an even better chance to remember, take time to pay attention to where you are when you start to rehearse.

Distraction: Who is in control of attention and rehearsal of memory? We are, barring functional interferences. We are constantly being distracted in our lives. What happens when you look up a phone number and then forget it by the time you get to the phone? You have allowed yourself to be distracted.

Or maybe you listened to your inner voice about how bad your memory is and thought about that instead of the phone number.

What to do. Work towards becoming aware of the distractions that interrupt your rehearsal of the number or date you are trying to remember. Be most aware of the internal distractions, interfering thoughts, or conflicting emotions.

Memory Tip: Spaced Retrieval. Begin by repeating the information to yourself immediately and then after one minute, keep doubling the time every time you are successful; when you are unsuccessful decrease the time. This is a great technique.

Lets try the phone number again. Use both methods, try to make a rhythm as you go. Keep a journal of your exercises and experience if that suits you.

Tips to help your family fight the flu this season

It’s Flu Season Many people view Influenza (commonly known as The Flu) as a minor illness however in high-risk populations it can be much more. The Influenza Virus contributes to approximately 20 000 hospitalizations and 4000 deaths each year in Canada. Complications usually occur in the elderly, those with underlying medical conditions and small children. Getting a yearly vaccination helps to stop the spread of the virus to those at high risk.

In Canada the flu season usually runs from November until April. It is best to get an annual flu shot between October and December before the number of flu cases increases. A vaccination is required every year because the flu strains that circulate change every year.

Common symptoms of the flu include fever, headache, muscle aches and pains, fatigue, and cough and cold symptoms. Complications of the virus can be secondary bacterial infections such as pneumonia (the most common cause of death due to the flu virus), ear infections, sinus infections or worsening of medical conditions.

The influenza virus is spread by people infected with the virus through droplets in the air.

These droplets can be spread by coughing, sneezing or even talking. Sneezing can send germs flying as far as six feet. The virus can also be spread by direct contact with objects that have come in to contact with flu germs. Germs can live on surfaces for 2-8 days. People can be contagious before they even know they have the flu and for 5-7 days after! Frequent, thorough hand washing can help prevent the spread of germs like influenza but your best defense is getting the annual flu vaccination.

It is recommended that every Canadian over the age of six months get an annual flu vaccine.

In British Columbia, eligible individuals for the publicly funded vaccine are individuals at high risk for the infection, individuals capable of transmitting influenza to those at high risk and individuals who provide essential community services. For specific details on eligibility for publicly-funded vaccine speak to your Pharmacist, Physician or local Health Unit. For anyone not eligible for publicly funded vaccine they can purchase and receive the vaccination at most pharmacies.

Private insurance plans will often cover the vaccine for those who are not eligible for the publicly funded vaccine.

More and more options are coming available for the Influenza Vaccine. For anyone between the ages of 2 and 59 who are afraid of needles, there is a vaccination in the form of a nasal spray that is administered by a health care provider. There are also newer versions of the vaccine which protect you against 4 different strains of the flu instead of 3. Prefilled single dose syringes do not contain Thiomersal, a preservative which is often found in vaccines.

“There are some really simple ways to help your family fight the flu this winter,” explains Laura Weyland, a pharmacist with Shoppers Drug Mart. “People don’t have to wait it out and hope for the best. There are three easy tips to help keep you healthy this year: eat well, wash your hands frequently, and get the flu shot.”

“While it’s important to make healthy food choices all year, it’s also a good idea to look at what you eat during flu season to ensure you’re getting the nutrients your body needs,” says Laura McCann, a registered dietitian with Loblaws. “Vitamins C and E are antioxidants for the maintenance of good health while zinc supplements have been proven to help maintain immune function. Foods that contain an abundance of these are good to look for during your grocery shop.”

Below are a few foods that will help you maintain a healthy diet: • Citrus Fruit - Not only are citrus fruits a good source of vitamin C, they’re naturally delicious.

• Beans and Legumes - Boost your zinc intake by including a variety of beans and legumes in your diet.

Red Mountain offering Halloween concert SUBMITTED Creston’s up-and-coming hard rock band Red Mountain is performing Oct. 30 at the Snoring Sasquatch.

Red Mountain is Adam Dye (rhythm guitar, synthesizer, lead vocals, tattoos), Micah Snow (lead guitar, backup vocals, beard), Dillon Olfert (bass guitar, backup vocals, fur coat), Neil Ripski (drums, fists of fury) and Jason Deatherage (drums, backup fists of fury).

Red Mountain was formed in October 2013 under the name Beardo by Snow, Olfert and Ripski as a comedy rock and heavy jam band for fun. As time went on, the group started to evolve in lineup, sound and focus, moving from a good way to kill time on Wednesday nights to a genuine creative machine intent on taking the Canadian music scene by storm.

Influenced mainly by bands such as Tool, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Rammstein and Alice in Chains, Red Mountain has begun to forge a sound of their own while borrowing influence from the music that has shaped

Library opera season opening with DVD of Verdi’s Stiffelio

The 2015-16 opera season at the Creston Valley Public Library begins on Oct. 31 with a viewing of the Metropolitan Opera production of Verdi’s Stiffelio.

Placido Domingo sings the title role of the priest, and Sharon Sweet performs as his wife, Lina. The second priest is played by Paul Plishka.

t a young age, I knew that I wanted to become a veterinarian, and am very excited to start my career at the Creston Veterinary Hospital.

Born and raised in Vancouver, BC, my family always included an assortment of furry critters, instilling in me a love for animals at a young age. After high school, I obtained a Bachelor of Science (Agro-ecology) degree from UBC before attending the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan.

During my post-secondary studies I worked in a variety of small and mixed animal veterinary clinics, was involved in nutrition and animal welfare research with cattle (beef and dairy) and swine, and volunteered in low-cost spay-neuterhealth clinics on reservations in South Dakota.

enabling them to do that, at least for a time. And, perhaps, the right conditions are present with this very interesting fall weather that we are experiencing. It also seems spring is arriving early, even on the Balancing Rock Trail, with some unexpected blooms. It may be that some plants went into dormancy because of the dryness and, now, are finishing the cycle. Among the non-flowering plants there are rock ferns that died back in August, but now bright green fronds have emerged among the dry, brown ones.

Oct. 18, cool and cloudy, wasn’t a kind of day that most people would choose to go hiking. And, when we got out there, trail traffic was light. The sum total of hikers we met was three — two women and a dog.

Actually, the cool temperature was good for the hike to the end of the Creston Mountain Trail that continues on from the Balancing Rock Trail. On the upward hike we didn’t get excessively hot, sweating just a little under the backpack.

We ended up at the “Trail End” sign-in box after a two-hour-and15-minute hike and had lunch. It was nice to have an extra jacket to put on right after taking the pack off, as it kept the sweaty back Ed McMackin from getting chilled. Silver birches drop golden leaves on the Creston Mountain Trail.

a surprise to see a few knapweed flowers. They were quite pretty in a landscape void of other flower species. The first surprise was a cluster of fresh flowers of mallow ninebark. Being quite out-of-season, I had to take a long look to convince myself of their identity. Mallow ninebark shrubs display their flowers in early summer.

Then just a few feet away was a sprig of common St. John’s wort. That tall, rigid plant, purported to have some healing virtues, was bearing several bright yellow flowers. To see this June flower in autumn was, alone, healing for me.

Probably the greatest surprise on the trail were two dozen or so strawberry flowers. Scattered in little groups along the trail, they seemed totally out of season. They normally bloom in spring and early summer, depending on the elevation, and then, for the most part, are finished.

Near the bottom of the trail there were the ever-to-be-expected dandelions. Their flowers seemed more brilliant than usual.

Thunder Cats earn win, tie, loss in three games

BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor The past week was a mixed bag for the Creston Valley Thunder Cats, who added a win, a loss and a tie to their record.

With 21 points, they remain in second place in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, seven points behind the Kimberley Dynamiters and three ahead of the Fernie Ghostriders.

The Columbia Valley Rockies sit in fourth place with 14 points, two of those earned during Friday’s 3-0 shutout against the visiting Thunder Cats a few days after their Oct. 20 6-3 loss in Creston.

“We did enough to win but we certainly weren’t at our best,” said head coach Jeff Dubois.

“It was a couple of games against Columbia Valley where I don’t think we appreciated that they are a very good competitive team. We got the win really just because we were playing offense-first-type hockey.”

Goals by Logan Wullum and Lien MillerJeannotte gave Creston a 2-0 lead after the first period, with goals by Nicholas Kovacik and power-play goals by James Severs and Alec Wilkinson setting the Rockies back 5-2 at the end of the second. The Rockies scored once in the third period before Carson Cartwright added a shorthanded goal with 10 minutes remaining.

The lack of effort continued into Friday’s 3-0 loss in Invermere.

“Columbia Valley outworked us, outplayed us from the top of the lineup to the bottom,” said Dubois. “We didn’t give them the respect they deserved, and they made us pay.

“Those couple of games were an eye-opener that maybe we’re not as good as we think we are.

Nobody gives it to you. Nobody gets two points just by showing up.”

Back in Creston hosting the Chase Heat on Saturday, the effort was improved, said Dubois.

“I think some of our guys got the message from Friday night,” he said. “At both ends of the rink, we were working better.”

The Heat started the scoring 17 minutes into the first period, with Marc-Antoine Gagnon (power play) and Severs each scoring in the second. After a couple of “uncharacteristic defensive mistakes”, the Heat scored twice in the first six minutes of the third period, with Cartwright tying the score with 1:56 remaining, for a final result of 3-3.

“I think we got to the point where the wins were coming easy and lost sight of the fact that you’re out there competing against someone who wants it too,” said Dubois. “We had a couple of games where our compete level just wasn’t as high as other teams’ and we paid for it.”

This weekend, the Thunder Cats take a threegame road trip, visiting the 100 Mile House Wranglers on Friday, the Kamloops Storm on Saturday and Revelstoke Grizzlies on Sunday.

“Going into their rink on Friday is one we know is going to be tough physically.”

Creston also beat the Grizzlies in their last game, but hasn’t yet met up with the Storm, a team known for its big ice and speed.

“It’s always a challenge mentally and physically when you play three and three, and on this trip we’ve drawn three pretty tough teams,” said Dubois.

Fred Tady of Black Diamond, Alberta passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at the Oilfields Hospital in Black Diamond on October 17, 2015 at the age of 88 years.

Fred was born on the farm near Punnichy, Saskatchewan on April 13, 1927. He spent most of his life in BC before retiring in Moyie. In 2012 he moved to the High Country Lodge in Black Diamond to be closer to family.

Fred lived life to the fullest, was full of jokes and laughter and had the will of a giant. He never let anything stop him from achieving his goals and loved to build things.

He was admired for his strength and determination.

Fred was predeceased by his wife Verna; parents Frederick and Bertha; sisters Gladys and Laura; and son Greg.

Fred will be sadly missed by his daughter Bev (Pat), extended family and all his special friends he shared his life with.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who had a part in his life.

A Funeral Service was held on Saturday, October 24th at 10:00 am in Cranbrook, BC at McPherson Funeral Home (2200 - 2nd Street South) with burial to follow.

YKRS Carefest raises $10,000 for EKFH EAST KOOTENAY FOUNDATION FOR HEALTH

The Yahk Kingsgate Recreation Society’s Carefest fundraiser for the East Kootenay Foundation for Health’s intensive care unit redevelopment campaign can only be described as outstanding. At the close of the evening, the crowd was not disappointed as an outstanding $10,000 was presented to representatives from EKFH who attended the event.

The Oct. 3 fundraiser was a fun-filled extravaganza with lots of opportunities for supporters to bid on live and silent auction items, take a chance on prizes featured on the treasure trees or simply make a donation.

The evening was further complemented with a scrumptious buffet dinner and music from the always popular Creston Community Band.

The audience was a varied mix of young and old all with a common goal of supporting the YKRS in showing its commitment to health care at the regional hospital.

amount being contributed to the ICU,” said YKRS president Judy Dickson.

“The entire committee deserves a huge round of applause and a well-earned break after a job well done.”

“I was unbelievably taken back at how well-organized and presented the Carefest fundraiser was in Yahk,” said EKFH assistant director Patricia Whalen. “To the people and organizations who supported the Yahk Kingsgate Recreation Society, thank you. To YKRS itself, your trust and support for EKFH is very much appreciated.”

The summer has been a busy one for the ICU redevelopment campaign, with events in support of and donations arriving on a regular basis. The East Kootenay Regional Hospital’s new ICU is to be commissioned in the spring of 2016.

A major donor driven community campaign to raise $1,000,000 was launched in October 2014 to assist in the purchase of various ICU capital equipment. The fundraising campaign is anticipated to meet its target prior to the commissioning. For more information on the ICU campaign, visit www.ekfh.ca.

The Arcane Garden is a musical collaboration between Michelle Moss and William Chapman.

Moss has been singing, writing songs and performing for 20 years, and Chapman has an extensive industry history, performing, producing and/or engineering for such artists as Strange Advance, D.O.A., Randy Bachman, Neil

After first connecting in Vancouver, the two relocated to the Kootenays, near Nelson, where they built a small project studio and now continue to explore their musical relationship. The selftitled CD, The Arcane Garden, is their first offering, released independently in December 2008, containing 10 tracks of original music covering a wide range of genres: trip hop, down tempo, drum ’n’ bass and ambient.

Dig Deep was the second release, which included performances from guest musicians, including the legendary Ellen McIlwaine.

All the material is groove oriented, deep, atmospheric and heavily layered, featuring Chapman’s composition, programming, performance and production skills, and Moss’s evocative vocal (lyric and melody) expressions. Ongoing live performances feature Chapman on fretless bass, Moss singing and a compliment of assorted live players providing additional live elements (such as percussion and guitar).

Tickets are $15 in advance at Buffalo Trails Coffee House, Kingfisher Used Books and Black Bear Books, and $18 at the door, which opens at 6 p.m.; the Nov. 7 show starts at 7. Teens receive an $8 rate only at the door.
