We are happy to report that we received “accreditation” from Imagine Canada earlier this year.

Imagine Canada monitors ethical practices for charities and not-for-profits in Canada and oversees a national accreditation process. Although the Foundation joined Imagine Canada almost two decades ago, the national accreditation program is new; one of the first of its kind in the world. Accreditation measures standardized practices in areas of “board governance, financial accountability & transparency, fundraising, staff management, and volunteer involvement….” With more than 170,000 charities and not-for-profit organizations in Canada, our Foundation is very proud to be one of only 150 “top tier” organizations permitted to use the accreditation “Program Trustmark”. More exciting news, last December we expanded our business enterprise endeavours by opening a second Code Brew coffee shop; Code Brew @ Millstone. Furthermore, Nanaimo Lifeline has taken over full monitoring duties that were previously shared with NRGH staff during late night shifts. Lifeline also increased its technical capabilities by launching a new web-based monitoring platform.

The "Ureteroscope Flexible Wolf" is used by Urologists to exam the upper urinary tract. It is able to pass through the urethra, bladder, and then directly into the ureter.

Code Brew @ NRGH underwent an incredible evolution during the last fiscal year. In operation since 2000, the business enterprise expanded with a second location on the corner of Dufferin and Boundary Crescents in the new Millstone Health Centre. Code Brew @ Millstone is not only a second venue, but supplies food/meals to Code Brew @ NRGH; enabling larger proceeds to be reinvested into healthcare on Central Island. You can help make both businesses successful through patronage and by telling your friends.

Code Brew @ NRGH also had a chance to shine. Built in order to diversify healthcare funding, Code Brew is uniquely reliant on the partnership of staff and volunteers. On March 20th, 2015 Code Brew @ NRGH stood among esteemed social enterprise nominees to receive the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce Business Achievement Award for “Social Considerations-Social Enterprise”. The Chamber explained, “This award is presented to a not-for-profit organization that exemplifies excellence and innovation in their programs, services and projects in an effort to be self-sustaining….demonstrates a dedicated focus on achieving a social vision and mandate.” Thank you for 15 years of success!

NANAIMO LIFELINE PROGRAM There have been significant changes to the Nanaimo Lifeline Program during the past year. In October 2014 we began monitoring our call centre 24hrs a day for the first time. Prior to that, the NRGH Switchboard staff monitored calls between 11:30pm and 7:30am each day, while we monitored calls from the Lifeline office from 7:30am to 11:30pm. Lifeline gratefully acknowledge the years of support we received from NRGH staff. It was a mutually supportive relationship that assisted many vulnerable people living at home.

Golf for Life – The 21st annual tournament on September 5th, 2014 sold out and raised almost $70,000 for two new O.R.s at NRGH. Golfer Gene Nutter sunk a hole-in-one to win $10,000 thanks to hole sponsor Knappett Industries.

Brovember – two dozen men grew moustaches in November and raised $12,088 in pledges to help purchase a new cystoscope at NRGH for men’s health.

Lotto for Life – The 22nd annual hospital lottery sold out all 5,000 tickets for the first time since 2003! Additionally, the $100,000 Grand Prize winners were in the audience on the night of the draw – congratulations again Pauline Ashton and Edward Greskow. Sincere thanks to sponsors (who provide prizes at discounted prices), ticket outlet partners, and especially ticket purchasers!

Run for Life – Imagine, more than 280 registrants joined the 12th annual Run, raising almost $50,000 for the two new O.R.s at NRGH. This was the most successful Run for Life in Foundation history! Thank you!

More exciting news, last December we expanded our business enterprise endeavours by opening a second Code Brew coffee shop; Code Brew @ Millstone. Furthermore, Nanaimo Lifeline has taken over full monitoring duties that were previously shared with NRGH staff during late night shifts. Lifeline also increased its technical capabilities by launching a new web-based monitoring platform.
