First responders remind drivers and pedestrians to move with caution as darker, winter months roll in BY VALERIE ROSSI Times Staff

A 58-year-old postal worker was hit by a car while crossing Victoria Street Monday morning. The woman lay in the middle of the intersection while the driver of the pick-up truck that struck her stood on the sidelines. He is now facing charges of failing to yield to a pedestrian and no insurance under the Motor Vehicle Act. “There is no loss of consciousness,” registered nurse Kelly Simpson told the Trail Times. “I think she's got a laceration to the back of her head.” Simpson was on her way to Maglio Building Centre and saw the aftermath of the commotion that occurred at approximately 9:20 a.m. The postal worker was traveling southbound on foot toward Cedar Avenue when the 48-yearold male driver was turning left from Cedar. The pedestrian's khaki hat caught Trail Times reporter Sheri Regnier's eye when she watched the familiar woman push the button and wait for the pedestrian signal. “All of a sudden, I could hear the guy's tires, and it wasn't his tires skidding to break,” explained Regnier. “I looked across just in time to hear that horrible noise – boom – she goes flying, her hat, her mail, everything.” Regnier was in shock when she tossed her bags to the side of the road and arrived first on the scene. “I kept asking, 'Who called the ambulance?'” See VISIBILITY, Page 2

Six local businesses received top marks this weekend when, after 21 years, the Trail and District Chamber of Commerce revived the Business Excellence Awards. Eighty Trail and area small businesses were nominated by the public, then each category narrowed down by the number of nominations and written accolades received by nominees.

The list of 80 was streamlined to 18 businesses ranging from grocers to gardeners, and hair stylists to mechanics. The winners were announced following chamber members voting by ballot, during a Saturday brunch at the Riverbelle. Business of the Year went to Valley Firearms, a sporting goods store and gun shop the Urquhart family moved into downtown Trail three years ago. See WINNERS, Page 3

Both drivers and pedestrians should be extra cautious, according to regional fire chief Terry Martin. “I think we just have to be that much more careful anytime of the year,” he said. “But as the season changes, and as it gets darker, we

have a responsibility as drivers to be careful and watch for people crossing the street because they do have the right of way.” The message hit close to home last December when two elderly women were hit by a car in East Trail. One woman was sent to Kelowna for a treatment of a head injury and later passed away.

The voice of concerned parents at Webster Elementary School has grown louder since the school's principal, Warfield council and the RCMP are backing their bid to improve crosswalk safety. The group gathered Wednesday night in council chambers to open up the dialogue between a few members of each party in a casual discussion on curbing drivers from running red lights, talking and texting on cellphones and flying through school zones. Then maybe they'd be open to listening.” With that, the group has decided to host a similar meeting at a time that suits highway's schedule. Rachel Jansen, Webster's Parent Advisory Council chair, presented some solutions to improving pedestrian safety at the busy crossing. Short-term fixes included painting lines on the road to indicate a safe space for pedestrians to wait before advancing onto the road, painting the crosswalk in Webster colours or 'school zone, 30 km/hour or

They’ve done everything right.” But Sgt. Oelke took note that parents, especially of preschoolers, were choosing to park on the Murray Drive side of the crosswalk, rather than walking further from the parking lot. “Why would you walk your kids across a busy highway if you didn’t have to?”

he scandal of the week at the B.C. legislature is what could be termed “delete-gate.” Primarily, it revolves around 36 pages of government emails that the NDP opposition has been trying for a year to get under freedom of information legislation. They relate to a series of meetings between transportation ministry bureaucrats and remote communities along Highway 16, between Prince George and Prince Rupert. If you want all of the accusations about government secrecy and alleged cover-ups, I invite you to read “Access Denied,” the latest report of the Information and Privacy Commissioner at www. oipc.bc.ca, and transcripts of question period in the legislature this week. What you won’t find there is much discussion of the actual problem, which is a shortage of safe and practical transporta-

tion options in and out of these communities, most of which are federally funded aboriginal reserves far from the region’s only highway. What we have seen for decades is a dramatic media narrative about one or more serial killers preying on vulnerable women hitch-hiking along what is now known world-wide as the Highway of Tears. The Wikipedia entry for Highway of Tears gives a sense of the credibility of this narrative. It begins with the unsolved murder of Gloria Moody, last seen leaving a bar in Williams Lake in 1969. That’s a long way from Highway 16. Then there was Monica Jack, killed in 1978. DNA technology resulted in a charge finally being laid last year against a known serial rapist. This was even further away, near Merritt, and she was a 12-year-old riding her bike. Other cases involve street prostitution in and

around Prince George, an urban hub for a large aboriginal population similar to Regina and Winnipeg. Discussion in Victoria focuses on urban notions of increased transit, in places where existing service may be under-used. Nationally, the narrative is that deep-seated social problems within aboriginal communities would somehow be solved by a lawyer-heavy judicial inquiry that looks only at tragedies involving women. If you drive Highway 16

today, you will see fading billboards pleading for information on the disappearance of Madison Scott. She was last seen in the early hours of May 28, 2011, after a grad party in the woods outside Vanderhoof. Her truck and tent were still there. Again, nothing to do with hitch-hiking, but at least it was near Highway 16. Here’s something else you won’t often hear in the Highway of Tears melodrama. There is commercial bus service on Highway 16, although Greyhound reduced frequency in 2013 as it struggles with low ridership and high costs. BC Transit also operates bus service to some remote communities like Kispiox and Gitsegukla, connecting them south to Smithers. But BC Transit requires local governments and riders to cover about half the cost. Indian Act reserves don’t pay.

North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice has noted that what people in remote communities ask for is a way to get back and forth for shopping and medical appointments. Yes, shopping is an important need, as those who live in remote areas can tell you. And Northern Health already runs a bus service for remote residents who need medical care. Rice’s observations at least move us toward practical solutions, although most of her effort seems directed towards political blame. I hope the infamous 36 pages of emails are eventually released, since they were not deleted but rather excluded from release. They may bring the discussion back to the actual public service issue, which is what realistic transportation options exist for these communities. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - There is not much cause for celebration at the box office this weekend. “Jem and the Holograms” became one of the worst debuts of all time for a major studio movie opening in over 2,000 locations with a truly outrageous $1.3 million. Bill Murray’s “Rock the Kasbah” barely did better, pulling in only $1.5 million. Vin Diesel’s “The Last Witch Hunter” also tanked with $10.8 million. But, while poor reviews might have sunk “Jem” and “Kasbah,” good reviews couldn’t save “Steve Jobs” either. After two very strong limited-release weekends, the biopic failed to impress in wide release with $7.3 million. The weekend of duds left room for holdovers to take the top spots. In second place, “Goosebumps” earned $15.5 million, while “The Martian” reclaimed its throne in weekend four with $15.9 million.

Netanyahu and the truth

I can’t stand him. He’s a liar,” then-French president Nicolas Sarkozy told US President Barack Obama four years ago, in a conversation about Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. Obama replied: “You’re fed up with him? I have to deal with him every day.”

It was a private conversation, but we know about it because it was accidentally broadcast to journalists. Politicians may deliberately mislead people, omit vital facts, spin the truth a dozen different ways to serve their purposes of the moment, but they usually avoid outright lies. It’s just too embarrassing to be caught in a lie. And other politicians generally accept that some of their colleagues shade the truth to fit their own agenda as one of the regrettable realities of their trade. They all swim in the sea. What drove Sarkozy and Obama to talk about Netanyahu like that was the sheer brazen effrontery of his lies – and he was at it again last week. In public, this time. Speaking to the the 37th World Zionist Congress in Jerusalem, Netanyahu declared that Hitler decided to exterminate the Jews on the advice of a Palestinian, Haj Amin al-Husseini, the grand mufti (senior Islamic cleric) of Jerusalem. Husseini met Hitler in Berlin in November 1941, he said (although there is no record of the meeting), and that was why the Holocaust happened. “Hitler didn’t want to exterminate the Jews at the time, he wanted to expel the Jews. And Haj Amin al-Husseini went to Hitler and said: ‘If you expel

them, they’ll all come here [to Palestine].’” According to Netanyahu, Hitler then asked: “What should I do with them?” and the mufti replied: “Burn them.” So, you see, it was the Palestinians, driven by a vicious and unreasoning hatred of the Jews, who really thought up the Holocaust, and Adolf Hitler was merely a tool in their hands. Historians instantly denounced this travesty of the historical record, and the greatest outrage was expressed by Jews who felt that Netanyahu had given a great gift to the Holocaust deniers. Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel was so appalled that she effectively called Netanyahu a liar to his face. Standing beside him in Berlin, she said: “We don’t see any reason to change our view of history, particularly on this issue. We abide by our responsibility, in Germany, for the Holocaust.” Yet Netanyahu continued to insist that it was Husseini who first suggested genocide to Hitler. Experienced journalists know that the most useful question to ask yourself when confronted with an implausible story is not: “Is this bastard lying to me?” It is: “WHY is this bastard lying to me?” So why did Netanyahu say that? In particular, why now? Because he needs to show that his policy of creating and expanding Jewish settlements in the West Bank, the onesixth of former Palestine that still has a Palestinian majority, is not responsible for the recent rash of violent attacks on Israeli Jews by young Palestinians. It is getting quite serious, though it is not yet a “third intifada”. Ten Jews have been murdered in the streets by Palestinians in the past month. About fifty Palestinians have been killed, including most of the killers and would-be killers. The fear and suspicion have grown so intense that in two cases of mistaken identity Jews have killed or wounded other Jews. There appears to be no central direction behind the attacks. Most observers believe that the phenomenon is main-

ly driven by the despair of young Palestinians who see their land slipping away and don’t believe that Netanyahu will ever let the Palestinians have their own state in the occupied territories. That would put the blame for the outbreak squarely on Netanyahu’s policies, which he cannot accept. So he is trying to prove that Palestinians just naturally hate Jews: “My intention was...to show that the forefathers of the Palestinian nation – without a country and without the socalled ‘occupation,’ without land and without settlements – even then aspired to systematic incitement to exterminate the Jews.” That is Netanyahu’s explanation for the current attacks: incitement by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, whom he blames for the rumours about Israel’s intention to expand Jewish access to the Haram al-Sharif, the area around Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa mosque. It is Islam’s third most sacred site, but it is also sacred to Jews as Temple Mount, and these rumours certainly played a role in stimulating the attacks. There is no evidence that Abbas was behind the rumours, however, and it’s unlikely that he would have encouraged them: what these attacks are actually showing is his own people’s loss of faith in his ability to get a Palestinian state. Nor is Saturday’s agreement in Amman between US Secretary of State John Kerry, Mahmoud Abbas and Jordan’s King Hussein to guarantee the current rules for access to the holy site likely to quell the violence. The rumours were a trigger for the violence, but the gun is always loaded. The Palestinian revolts in 1929 and 1936, which were indeed incited by Grand Mufti Husseini, were already about the Jewish colonisation of Palestine. It was always about the land, and it still is today. Netanyahu knows that very well. It is the real motive behind his own policies. He just can’t afford to admit it. Black Press The regulations surrounding off-road vehicles in the province go live on Nov. 1. The government said the new regulations are meant to promote safe and responsible use of the province’s backcountry. That includes provisions on placement of number plates, rules for child operators and safety equipment requirements. Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations said that off-road vehicle registration will help combat vehicle theft and promote responsible use of ORVs. “The new safety standards

will help keep off-road vehicles users safe in B.C.’s backcountry,” Thomson said. Voluntary registration has been in place since Nov. 17, 2014, and since then the province says over 35,000 users have registered. The combined cost of the number plate and registration fee is $48. The changes come after the provincial government passed the Off-Road Vehicle Act on March 24, 2014, support the Province’s Off Road Vehicle Management Framework. The framework helps British Columbians get out and enjoy the beauty of the province’s backcountry

and ensure off-road vehicles, including snowmobiles, are driven in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. Under the new law helmets must be worn when operating off-road vehicles, seat belts must be used if the manufacturer has installed seat belts, and lights are mandatory when riding on Crown land 30 minutes after sunset or 30 minutes before sunrise. If lights are not installed by the manufacturer, temporary lights can be attached to the vehicle. Further, children must be supervised when riding on Crown land and be riding an appropriate sized off-road

vehicle as recommended by the manufacturer. The off-road vehicle registration is integrated within the pre-existing structure of the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia’s (ICBC) motor vehicle registry. This will reduce implementation costs and allows off road vehicle owners to register at any ICBC insurance broker in the province. An estimated 200,000 offroad vehicles are used in the province. Smokies complete comeback thriller BY JIM BAILEY

Trail defenceman Ryan Swanson netted the winner in overtime as the Trail Smoke Eaters staged a dramatic third-period comeback win on the road, downing the Merritt Centennials 5-4 in BCHL action on Friday. Despite a late start after a bus breakdown and prolonged pre-game introductions, the Smokies managed to shrug off a 4-1 deficit in the third period, scoring three-power play goals to force overtime, collect their sixth win of the season, and sweep the home-and-home with Merritt. “That rink, it’s a really tough rink to play in, it’s small, and things come at you quick,” said Nick Deschenes, Smoke Eater coach and GM. “With all the distractions pre-game, I don’t think we were as sharp as we needed to be. I thought we had some guys that were not quite engaged enough. It was 4-1 after two and it was pretty simple, we just have to go and outcompete and have the message that anything can happen in that kind of a rink.” After the Smokies scored three unanswered in the third to tie it at 4-4, Swanson took a pass from Cooper Leitch stepped over the blue line and fired a slap shot top corner to end the match 2:13 into the first overtime session to shock the hometown crowd and celebrate the improbable victory. Unfortunately for Swanson, what would have been his first goal of the season was awarded to forward Jake Kauppila, who had already scored twice, to complete the phantom hat trick. “Poor kid, the one guy that could use some pump in his tires, so the whole weekend it’s been all about the hat trick, but Swanson came across the blueline and shelfed it.” Ryan Forbes opened the scoring for Merritt 7:54 into the first, but Kauppila tied it at one, finishing a setup from Swanson and Leitch to make it 1-1 on the power play with under four minutes to play. However, Merritt would get their own power-play marker after John Laurito was sent off for high sticking. Gavin Gould beat starter Bailey MacBurnie on the doorstep with 1:35 to play in the opening frame, as Merritt outshot Trail 11-9 in the period. Two second period goals from

Gould and Colin Granarry gave Merritt a 4-1 lead heading into the final stanza. The Smokies began their charge after Granarry was sent off for slashing at 10:20 of the third and Nick Halloran converted a Kurt Black pass to draw the Smokies within two. Just over two minutes later, Kienan Scott blasted a shot by Merritt goalie Cole Kehler on another power play with assists to Harlan Orr and Kauppila to make it 4-3. Merritt would again get into penalty trouble when Ryan Forbes was sent off for slashing and 31 seconds later Nick Fiorentino took a roughing penalty. Down two men, the Smokies’ Kauppila capitalized beating Kehler on an Orr set up to tie it with 5:16 to play and force OT. “In the third, they started taking undisciplined penalties and we kept our composure, and the fact was (we scored) on the power play which has not been one of our strengths so that was a good thing, and to get the win in overtime, I mean three-goal comebacks in third periods don’t happen too often, at any level, so when it does it’s definitely a good feeling.” Trail went 4-for-9 on the power play while Merritt was 2-for-6. The Smokies outshot Merritt 32-27 including 11-3 in the third period. Trail’s rally was backed by Linden Marshall who came on in relief of MacBurnie midway through the second period and made 10 saves to close out the match. The Smokies third period comeback and power-play success were two big positives for a team that has struggled with the man advantage and emerging on the winning end of close games this season. Veteran players led the way with Kauppila having a four point night, and Leitch and Orr pitching in with two helpers each. “It’s no secret that when our older players are not our best players, then we’re going to have a hard time being successful,” added Deschenes. “When our older players are our best players and they’re leading the way, then I think we are in good shape.” Kauppila was named the game’s first star, Leitch second star, while Grannary took third-star honours. Trail plays in Vernon versus the Vipers on Friday at 7 p.m. and will host the Penticton Vees on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Cominco Arena.

Nitehawks beat Bears, escape Posse rally

BY TIMES STAFF The Beaver Valley Nitehawks earned four points in KIJHL action on the weekend despite a temporary lapse against the Princeton Posse on Friday at the B.V. Arena. The Hawks squandered a four-goal lead against Princeton but rallied to win 6-5 in overtime, and then kept the pedal down, rolling to a 6-1 thrashing of the Grand Forks Border Bruins the next night. “Friday against Princeton we were pretty lacklustre,” said Nitehawks coach Terry Jones. “We were up 5-1 and we took some short cuts, made some mistakes and undisciplined at times and allowed them to comeback in the game.” In Saturday’s game against Grand Forks, Braden Fuller notched the winner at 14:54 of the second period when he took a Jaxon Joseph pass in the high slot and wired a snap shot top corner to put B.V. up 2-0 on their way to Saturday’s 6-1 romp. “I think we were really quite focused, and I thought Grand Forks threw a great effort at us . . . They have a good hard working team, I’m impressed with what they are doing and they forced us to work hard.” Tyler Ghiradhosi put the Hawks on the board two minutes and 50 seconds into the first, banging in a cross ice feed from Devin Nemes to give B.V. a 1-0 lead through one period. After Fuller put the Hawks up 2-0, Philip Lam’s shot from the right circle eluded B.V. goalie Jason Mailhiot to bring the Bruins within one at 6:27. Posse forward Joshua Dixon netted a shorthanded marker with 4:50 remaining to even it at 5-5 and send it into overtime, where Jace Weegar would end it for the Hawks just 41 seconds in, as B.V. outshot the Posse 38-23. Beaver Valley continues to reign atop the Neil Murdoch standings with a 13-2-0-0 record to stay a point up on the 12-3-0-1 Castlegar Rebels despite some major adversity. The Hawks goalie situation grew dire last week when the Hawks only goalie, Drake Poirier, contracted a virus and is out of the lineup indefinitely. B.V. picked up Trail native Jason Mailhiot who became available when the Creston Valley Thundercats signed Kai McDonald, a former Border Bruin, from the Summerside Capitals of the Maritime Junior Hockey League. “Since (Brandon) Wells left we’ve been patient we want to find a number one goalie, so the guys that have been letting go from Junior A camps are the guys we are trying to target,” said Jones. The Kootenay Wild Female Midget AAA hockey team earned its first win of the season in a 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Island Seals on the weekend on the strength of Emma Wheeldon’s game-winning goal and good goaltending from Katalina Hartland. All three games were close but the Wild dropped the first game Friday 3-2 before falling 4-0 on Sunday in Campbell River.

Jays GM optimistic about future THE CANADIAN PRESS Toronto Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos says he isn’t ready to talk about his future with the club. His contract expires at the end of the month but he says “this isn’t the day to discuss that.” The architect of Toronto’s first playoff season in 22 years met with the media today following the club’s exit from the post-season Friday night. The Blue Jays failed to advance to the World Series after a gut-wrenching 4-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series. Anthopoulos stressed it has been his decision to put his contract situation on the backburner during the playoffs to avoid it being a distraction.

He will be negotiating with incoming president Mark Shapiro, who will replace the retiring Paul Beeston in the offseason. The Anthopoulos deal is one of several items on the team’s to-do list. Pending free agents include ace left-hander David Price, right-hander Marco Estrada and reliever Mark Lowe. The Jays struggled to cash in baserunners in the ALCS, finishing 4-for-41 with runners in scoring position in their four losses in the series. “0-for-12 with runners in scoring position (in Game 6),” said Anthopoulos. “That’s really what it came down to. We were the best offensive team in the game and I would bet on our guys not going 0-for-12 very often, but it happens.” Anthopoulos said the Jays

were outplayed by the Royals. “They deserve to be in the World Series,” he said. Bolstered by Anthopoulos’s moves at the trade deadline, the Jays had a dream second half this season. Toronto led the majors with a 48-23 record after all-star break, leading the American League in runs (405), home runs (117) and earnedrun average (3.33) among other categories. Remarkably, Toronto was 50-51 three days before the July 31 trade deadline - in fourth place in the AL East, eight games back. The Jays had 27 sellouts this season including 20 of their last 21 games. “I do think we’ve turned a corner as an organization,” said an optimistic Anthopoulos. “I think we’re in a position to win for a long time.”
