Our writer: Valley Seniors is a monthly feature compiled by Orlando Delano and featuring residents living in Port Alberni seniors complexes.

The Royal Lady of Heritage Place “One of the most enjoyable things I’ve done in my adult life was to portray ‘Queen Victoria’ on my annual visits to the senior homes in the Valley,” says Doreen Leach with a big smile and lots of enthusiasm.

She has been a tenant of Heritage Place for the past two years.

“I had so much fun entertaining hundreds of seniors on Victoria Day every year, along with my friend and, at that time, my ‘Lady-inwaiting’, Victoria Roscoe-Romanus.

She was so good and helpful!” Leach said.

“We laughed and made others laugh by reading funny

scripts that I used when addressing our ‘Canadian subjects’ as their royal visitor.”

She recalls that the dress she wore on those visits was from one of her plays she performed at the local Capitol Theatre.

“Many years ago I was asked by the theatre staff to be part of the cast by portraying Queen Victoria at a production—and I gladly accepted.”

Leach, who was born and raised in Surrey, England, and moved to Canada after marrying a Canadian soldier after the war, is the mother of four girls (one passed away) and one boy,

all but one living in other places in the

“My son is one of the managers for the provincial ferry corporation. I am proud of all of them.”

Leach’s love for animals took her to work for the SPCA in Penticton and she became the first female inspector for that organization in the province. She

then worked in a pet shelter as well.

Once she moved to Port Alberni, she continued her work at the local animal shelter for a while.

“I do love animals and I certainly want to care for them. I have had several dogs in my lifetime,” she says.

A few years ago, she was also a volunteer

for Shaw Cable and conducted many interviews with local citizens.

Nowadays, Leach keeps an active life by attending a wide variety of programs that are offered by Heritage Place.

“This is a wonderful place and I highly recommend it to anyone who is in need of living

independently but at the same time who enjoys the social aspect of it,” she comments.

“I am 85 years old, I have my own suite with access to my own garden, isn’t it lovely? And, in order to keep fit, I go on daily walks for several blocks, depending, of course, on the weather.”

Tiny home on the move

When the Koszegis’ Volkswagen van got to be too small, they built a tiny home away from home

“A lot of stuff was made with reclaimed material,” said Dave.

“The windows were out of an old house and the doors were out of an old house... we learned a lot about recycling.”

It was an involved process all around for the family—made up of Dave’s wife Erin, his daughters Julia, 8, Francesca, 7, and son Matteo, 4.

“We did all the work together,” said Dave.

“We started Jan. 17 and it went till four days before Canada Day,” While the work could have been done faster, the point wasn’t to rush—it was to build a family project to be filled with camping trip memories for years to come.

“A construction guy or a handy person

could have probably built it with a buddy in a week or in two weeks just like how you’d build a shed,” said Dave.

“But what took longer than a regular shed was that it had to be glued and screwed for strength...

I can’t remember how many tubes of glue we used but it was 20 or something, just a crazy amount.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com

The tiny home parked on the Koszegis’ Sproat Lake property is a little different than the larger homes Dave Koszegi sells for his day job as a realtor.

“I like houses, obviously,” said Koszegi.

“And I think the tiny home movement is cool and so I’ve read about it.”

The tiny home movement has gotten huge—between stories in National Geographic, Home and Garden TV series, a student in Texas using one to graduate debt-free and a Canadian Olympian saving on housing costs, tiny homes are everywhere.

But it wasn’t until a recent family vacation to Hornby Island that the Koszegis started looking seriously at building their own.

“Every year we go for three or four days on Canada Day,” he said.

“We take a Volkswagen van and we’re kind of outgrowing it.”

Last year, they found a book on tiny homes at a local shop.

“It was called Tiny Homes on the Move,” said Koszegi.

“SoI was sitting with these little munchkins with a flashlight reading it,” said Koszegi.

“Right in the book they had one

being towed by a Volkswagen van like ours. So we thought, well, this could work!”

It wasn’t a perfect fit, being too heavy for what the Koszegis’ van could pull.

“We had to downsize the materials to make it light enough.”

When Dave asked if he could use lighter, thinner wood planks to reduce the weight, he was told no.

“This van weighed 1,500 lbs and ours weighed 700 lbs.

“We asked if we could build (the tiny home) out of two by twos instead of two by fours and he said it wouldn’t be strong enough...so we did it.”

“So we glued it, lots of glue,” said Koszegi.

“And staples! And screws!” Dave’s daughter Francesca pipes up.

They saved on weight by keeping the floor made of plywood sealed by a clear finish.

It’s even eco-friendly.

“Theses lamps are all solar so they charge during the day and they automatically come on at night.”

Inside, it’s got everything you could want—beds, chairs, storage space and windows.

When the Koszegis stop for the night, it transforms into a little cabin.

“When we camp we put out little legs.”

Kidney disease and renal failure can affect people at any stage of life. Kidney disease is on the rise. When this life-changing event imposes itself on a person it affects the whole family. We have had the privilege to have families with us as they begin their journey and through kidney transplants and then as they end their journey.

Throughout that time we assist where we can and hope we have provided love and laughs as they live their journey.

We do a lot of fundraising but with the changes occurring in licenses we have looked into ways to make donations easier for people. We are grateful for the many donations in the memory of loved ones or ‘just because’ it’s donation time. We will provide a tax-deductible receipt donations. The Mid-Island Kidney Association (MIKA) is your local support group for those with, related to, or interested in knowing more about kidney disease. It originated in 2000 when local resident Marjorie Taylor. Originally it was to build a kidney house in Victoria but after Taylor’s passing in 2002 it was deemed all money raised would go towards the local dialysis unit for patient comforts and to local residents with kidney disease needing financial help.

Taylor had been a renal patient for four years and it was through her experience that she was hoping to fill a gap and offer comfort to others. Her family and friends continue her vision of fundraising for comforting patients with such purchases as blanket warmers and little events to lift spirits of those in palliative care in Ty Watson House.

MIKA vision remains to bring people who have Renal Failure and their families into our membership as well as others willing to provide support through sharing of experiences and educational insight with sharing, caring and fun times. MIKA also gives dialysis patients a cheque at Easter and Christmas to help them to be able to eat properly through the holidays.

MIKA isn’t a replacement for the Vancouver Island Patient Association or the Kidney Foundation. We ask you to continue to support them as their outreach is beyond what we are able to do. Rather R Iprovide S - a springC Hwe board to gather information. Patients

A sharp drill is a happy woodworking drill Shop Talk

Is there a doctor in the shop?

Second of two parts

Drilling holes is an essential part of woodworking. In the first half of our article on drilling holes we looked at some of the common drill bits found in a workshop.

We wrap up with input on the final bits as well as a tip on keeping them in good shape.

Drill and Countersink

While some modern screws are designed to drill their own holes as they are driven, most will benefit from drilling a pilot hole first. For speed and efficiency, nothing beats a combination drill bit and countersink.

In one easy operation they will provide a tapered hole in the second piece of wood for the point of the screw to grab onto; a clearance hole in the first for the shank of the screw, and a recessed countersink for the head.

These can be one piece, or made up of a counter- sink mounted to a standard drill bit.

Driving a screw into two pieces of wood without a clearance hole in the first piece will result in bridging; this is when the threads in the screw push the first piece away from the second piece before the screw grabs, leaving a gap that can’t be closed.

To provide a clean, finished appearance after countersinking screws, you can glue a small plug of wood into the hole and then pare it flush with the surface. These plugs can be quickly and easily cut in the shop using a plug cutter (mounted in a drill press) and some scrap from the project.

tapered. The tapered plug cutter will cut plugs that are coneshaped with one end being slightly narrower than the other. The advantage is that they can be inserted into the hole until they fit tightly on all sides.

A good set of twist drills, brad points, and Forstner bits will see you through most of the drilling applications you are likely to encounter in the shop, while a set of tapered drills with countersinks and a tapered plug

Like all other edge tools, drill bits will perform best when they are kept sharp.

Sharpening drill bits properly can be a bit tricky—the lip must be sharp and the clearance angle must be ground correctly for the bit to cut properly.

The Drill Doctor is a self-contained sharpening tool for twist drills that produces perfect results in minutes— every time. The dull bit is mounted in the chuck, which is then inserted into the machine. A diamond wheel powered by a motor provides the grinding action and all the operator has to do is rotate the chuck on the machine a few

The family of Jack Edward Nugent announce his passing in WCGH on Oct. 6.  We extend our appreciation for Jack's care, to Westhaven staff, Dr. Daryl Lund and the nursing staff at WCGH. Jack leaves his wife of 57 years, Marie and four children to mourn his passing; son, Allen (Anne) of Sydney, Australia; daughter, Laurie Deelman (Paul) of Powell River; daughter, Marilee of Montreal/Italy; son, Mark (Catherine) of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren, Kirina (Curt) Stothers and Brendan (Katie) Deelman of BC; greatgrandchildren, Elika & Emillie Stothers and new baby, McKenna Deelman.

Jack was born in 1923, in Fort William, Ontario. He served in the RCAF during WWll. Jack graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949. He was hired as a reporter by the Kingston-Whig Standard newspaper, upon graduation. Jack went on to become Editor of Flight Comment, the RCAF's safety magazine.

In 1965, Jack became Editor of The Labour Gazette (the 9th editor since McKenzie King), in Ottawa, Ontario.  Over the next few years, he transformed it from a dreary chronicle of facts and figures, into a lively, informative and eminently readable magazine.

Jack moved his young family to Victoria, BC in 1975, to begin working for the Provincial Government (NDP) in a newly created position, as Director of Information Services, Ministry of Labour. He remained here until his retirement in the early 1980's.

Jack and Marie followed their daughter to Port Alberni in 1994, to be near their two grandchildren.  A memorial service was held for the family, in the Sanctuary of the Unitarian Church, Oak St., Vancouver, BC on Oct. 16. A special thank you is extended to the staff at Chapel of Memories, Port Alberni for assisting the family. x x x

Proposed Woodland Licence Plan for Proposed First Nations Woodland Licence #N1S Notice is hereby given that the Hupacasath First Nation (HFN), applicant for First Nations Woodland Licence N1S will make the proposed Woodland Licence Plan (WLP) available for public viewing. This WLP has been developed under the Forest and Range Practices Act (FRPA). The Woodland Licence area is to be comprised of two parcels of Crown land west of Port Alberni. The Lowry unit is located at the east end of Great Central Lake. The Doran unit is located east of Doran Lake.

The WLP shows the areas where timber harvesting will be avoided, modified or allowed. The plan also includes information and results and strategies designed for the maintenance and protection of resource values in the plan area. The term of the WLP is ten years.

The plan is available for review by resource agencies and the public before the District Manager makes a determination, and can be reviewed during regular business hours from October 27th to November 25th, 2015 at the offices of the Hupacasath First Nation.

BC changing rules to leases, stratas Act is being changed to allow condo owners to wind up their strata corporation and sell the property with a vote of 80 per cent of owners. The law currently requires unanimous consent of owners, allowing one holdout to veto a sale.

The changes are expected to be made law when the B.C. legislature fall session ends Nov. 19.
