T

he Yukon saw the secondhighest voter turnout in the country during Monday’s federal election, with more than three quarters of the territory’s eligible voters casting their ballots.

In total, 19,982 Yukoners voted on Monday, representing 76 per cent of registered electors. That’s up from about 68 per cent in 2011. Only Prince Edward Island saw a higher voter turnout, with 77 per cent of registered voters marking ballots.

Voter turnout spiked across the North during this election.

In the Northwest Territories, 64 per cent of voters went to the polls, up from 55 per cent in 2011. And in Nunavut, voter turnout jumped to 62 per cent, from 47 per cent four years ago.

Nationally, voter turnout increased to 68 per cent from 61 per cent in 2011, the highest it’s been since 1993.

It’s an impressive jump, especially considering the concerns raised about voter suppression in the wake of the Harper government’s Fair Elections Act, which included more stringent identification requirements for voters.

Still, poll-by-poll results in the Yukon are not yet available, and it’s hard to know what percentage of the territory’s First Nation population voted on Monday.

Chief Doris Bill of the Kwanlin Dun First Nation said she doesn’t know how many of her First Nation’s citizens voted, but she believes people were engaged. She said she got a call from two people about 20 minutes before the polls closed, telling her they’d been turned away because they didn’t have a proof of address. She issued them a last-minute letter confirming their residency, and she said they were able to cast their ballots in the nick of time.

Nation didn’t end up issuing too many residency confirmation letters to people lacking ID. “When it came down to it, people helped other people in the end,” she said.

Kwanlin Dun helped get out the vote by paying someone to drive elders to and from the polls on Monday, Bill said, adding that several citizens also voted in the advance polls.

She said she was pleased with voter turnout across the Yukon.

“I think it means the Yukon is engaged,” she said. “They care about the issues. I think there was a lot of frustration with the current government, and I think they wanted a change.”

Hillary Aitken, program coordinator at the Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre, said her organization handed out 10 of the 15 free bus passes it received from the city to help people get to the polls during the municipal and federal elections.

“We were really happy to

help remove one of the barriers to voting for these women,” she wrote in an email to the News.

But she also said many women who came to the centre were looking for more information about the candidates and how to vote.

Next time, she’d like to work more closely with Elections Canada and maybe have someone present at the centre to provide information.

“It really resonates with people if there’s a face there that they can talk to.”

The Yukon’s election results, which saw Liberal candidate Larry Bagnell cruise to an easy victory, paralleled the results of a mock student vote carried out across the country by the civic education charity CIVIX. If that was the case, Taylor said, then Bagnell must be feeling a lot of love.

Taylor kicked off the celebrations by calling Bagnell into the front foyer of the museum, to the sound of The Proclaimers and I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles).

“I’m going to be the man who’s working hard for you,” the song goes, an obvious ode to Bagnell’s past recognition as Canada’s hardest-working MP. He emerged with his family – his son Dawson on his shoulders – and worked his way through the thick crowd, shaking hands and hugging supporters along the way.

Bagnell thanked the other candidates for their hard work and well-fought campaign, but teared up when he acknowledged his wife Melissa.

“She was like a single parent for two years, I was never there,” he said.

He said he loved her and handed her a gift basket before hugging her in tears.

Bagnell talked about the motivation he received following the 2011 election.

After the results came in he saw people in tears, he said, and

it pushed him to see if he could get his seat back in Ottawa.

“I had to give them a chance to see if I could do it,” he said.

He praised the work of the people behind the scenes – Brad Weston, Brandon Kassbaum and campaign manager Patricia Cunning.

“I don’t remember a mistake that she made,” Bagnell said of Cunning.

He also singled out 11-yearold Alex Gray, who went door-todoor with him on a few occasions over the last three months.

Gray had approached Cunning at a barbecue event this past summer and asked if he could volunteer with the team.

“I’ve always wanted to get involved in politics,” Gray said.

“As I grew older I started having ideas of my own. It was a great experience canvassing with Larry, he’s really inspiring.

“I’ve decided that I want to be an MP when I grow up.”

During the media scrum Bagnell talked about a long, exhausting campaign, the longest in the history of Canadian politics.

“Sixteen debates, that’s probably more than any candidate in the country had,” he said.

When asked if there had been a turning point in his campaign, he said no.

“You never feel confident, you always feel like you’re one

vote behind, until the very last minute.”

Cunning has worked on all of Bagnell’s campaigns dating back to the late 1990s, in one capacity or another.

She said a lot of people used to think she was Bagnell’s wife because she’d accompany him on the road when he visited communities.

“We’re happy to see the country have a Liberal prime minister, and thrilled to get Larry back to Ottawa and working for Yukoners,” she said.

She recalled a campaign when she and Bagnell were in a Dawson City bar, trying to gather support before an election.

A woman went up to Bagnell and had “colourful language” for him, Cunning said.

“I didn’t think it was going all that well,” she added, “but a few minutes later he gave me a tiny piece of paper with her name on it.”

Bagnell would do that whenever he knew someone would vote for him.

“He listened to her, her issues and her concerns, and she felt that,” Cunning said.

“She trusted that if he got elected, he’d try to help fix those issues. He’s the best candidate I’ve ever known.”

Rookie NDP candidate sees positives in her first campaign Ashley Joannou News Reporter

B

efore the pizzas were out of the ovens at the NDP’s post-election party, those in the know were calling a win for a Liberal federal government.

But that didn’t stop the crowds from filing in to Whitehorse’s Epic Pizza to congratulate the NDP’s first-time candidate Me-

lissa Atkinson.

They milled around – beer and slices in hand – and watched as that projected Liberal government grew into a majority and the NDP was pushed to the third party in the House of Commons.

In the Yukon, Atkinson led for a moment after the first few polls were reported. But once the eventual winner, the Liberal’s Larry Bagnell, took over, there was no looking back.

That’s an increase from 2011 when the party finished fourth and NDP candidate Kevin Barr took 14.4 per cent.

Incumbent Ryan Leef finished second.

“This journey has given me the privilege of letting me hear stories of people’s hopes and worries that we share about the future and I take through stories to my heart,” Atkinson told the standing-room only crown waiting for her.

Atkinson, a Yukon lawyer, laughed at some of the more “surreal” moments rookie candidates have to get used to during the campaign.

ing, considering that her face was on giant campaign signs scattered all over the territory.

“I can’t walk 10 feet without someone stopping me, and I think that’s going to be perhaps the most difficult part, when you realize that this is over,” she said.

“People saying, I might have voted for you but I’m voting strategically, and that’s it and that what they chose to do and that’s what you have the results of and that’s fine.”

The sense that potential NDP supporters may have seen a Liberal vote as the best way of ousting Harper was peppered through many conversations on election night.

“People wanted to make sure Harper was done, so they went with that,” Barr said.

But why voters saw the Liberals as a better choice than the NDP was harder to pin down.

“Once it begins to turn like that, it’s hard to change the narrative,” said former Yukon MP Audrey McLaughlin.

NDP supporter David Hedmann called Harper “the most despised prime minister in Canadian history, the most divisive.”

“Next to him, Pierre Trudeau was loved by Western Canadians.”

Hedmann credited Liberals with running a good campaign with a good, well-spoken leader who “tells a good story.”

“The history of Canada is Canadians elect a Conservative government and when they get annoyed with them they kick them out and they elect a Liberal government. When they get annoyed with the Liberal government they elect a Tory government,” he said.

“As we say in the NDP, the mice keep electing cats to lead us and it’s time the mice got together and elected a mouse as prime minister. Someone to represent us, that’s one of us. Not people that are not working in our interests.”

Barr, who after losing in 2011 went on to win an MLA seat for the territorial NDP, said he was happy to see an increase in votes for the NDP and an increased turnout overall.

Yukon’s 76 per cent voter turnout was the second highest in the country.

Even though she didn’t get the result she wanted, Atkinson said she won’t rule out running again four years from now.

“I’m a true Yukon girl and I’m not going anywhere. You just never know. I think you can see the momentum that we built and I’m just so proud of that.”

non-partisan process for Senate appointments. But the senator of six years said he isn’t concerned. “I’m never worried about it. I’ll just be part of it.�

Though the event was quiet – no music, little fanfare – Leef’s supporters didn’t seem overly discouraged by the loss. Michael Lauer, the party’s official agent, reflected on the campaign as he sold wine in plastic cups for five dollars a glass. “(Leef) takes it head-on like he takes most things in life,� he said. Despite the loss, Lauer has no plans to leave the Conservative Party. “I’ve been working for the party since 1979, so I have no reason to quit now.�

Lauer’s son, 12-year-old Simon, was likely the youngest supporter at the event. He was dressed in a blue jacket, emblazoned with “Harper 2015� that reached almost down to his ankles. “I think that (Leef’s) been a really good guy for the last four years,� he said. “I mean, I think he’s just been doing really good, and I think that’s a reason to support him.�

Pat McInroy, the Yukon Conservative Party president, also seemed reconciled to the results. “It’s not my ideal person that’s going to be representing us in Ottawa, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles.

That’s why we have elections.�

McInroy did harbour some bitterness about the amount of time he spent cleaning graffiti off Leef’s campaign signs and righting signs that were repeatedly knocked over during the last two months. He said the other parties didn’t have to deal with the same problem. “We had that one big windstorm and I’ll let those ones go, but the wind wasn’t blowing every night for 78 days.�

McInroy said he was most impressed by Leef’s ambition and his ability to retain information during this marathon campaign. “I thought he handled himself very well in all the debates,� he said. “They were not exactly friendly audiences at most of them.

He tried to give Yukoners the facts, and I’m proud of him for doing that, absolutely.�

During his concession speech, Leef promised his supporters that his political life isn’t over. “I can assure you that this is not the last you’re going to see of me

in politics,� he said, adding that he hasn’t made any decisions about what his next move will be.

For now, he said, he plans to spend more time with his family. “My son has dedicated four years of his life... to the Yukon and to the country. And it’ll be great to be a dad again.�

On Tuesday, Premier Darrell Pasloski released a statement congratulating Bagnell on his win.

Last week, the premier publicly endorsed Leef’s campaign.

No sign of bear involvement in Ross River death Environment Yukon says there is no evidence that a bear was responsible for the death of a Ross River man over the weekend.

Conservation officers, along with RCMP, went to Ross River around 6 p.m. Sunday evening after a body was discovered in the community this weekend.

There was concern in the community that the man may have been killed by a bear, but Environment Yukon says there are no signs of that. “After examining evidence at the scene, as well as the surrounding area, COs and RCMP did not discover any sign of bear or other wildlife activity,� the department said in a press release. “Conservation officers have

spoken to residents and have installed several trail cameras in the area. They will continue to investigate.�

Police have passed the investigation onto the coroner. “As this death is not suspicious (by not suspicious we mean it did not have a criminal cause) it is considered what we call a Coroner’s Act and therefore the responsibility the Yukon Cononer’s Office,� said Staff Sgt. Brad Kaeding. “The RCMP still assists in those investigations and conducts much of the work in support of the coroner.�

ukon’s federal Green Party candidate says Canadians outsmarted the country’s “dinosaur� electoral system by voting strategically for a Liberal government this week.

Frank de Jong fared worst of the four Yukon candidates in Monday’s election, claiming just three per cent of the vote, or 577 ballots.

He is pleased with the change in government, but he believes strategic votes cast for Liberal candidate Larry Bagnell cost him and NDP candidate Melissa Atkinson in this election. In 2011, popular Green Party candidate John Streicker took home 19 per cent of the vote and was accused of contributing to Bagnell’s loss to Conservative candidate Ryan Leef.

De Jong said he thinks many people were hoping for a Liberal minority in this election, and he worries that the Liberals won’t have an incentive to follow through on key issues like

electoral reform with a majority government. “The fox is in charge of the henhouse again,� he said. “I hope the Liberals don’t take it for granted. A lot of their support is due to strategic voting.�

De Jong pointed out that the Liberals only won 40 per cent of the vote, the same portion the Conservatives won to form their majority government in 2011. “They have an artificial majority, so they shouldn’t get too overconfident.�

Still, strategic voting is likely not solely to blame for de Jong’s poor showing. The Faro resident is a newcomer to the territory, having moved to the Yukon from Ontario just 14 months ago. He also wasn’t able to begin campaigning until September, thanks to his job as a schoolteacher.

In spite of being relatively unknown, de Jong said he had some rewarding encounters on the campaign trail. He mentioned speaking with a high school student who was interested in the Green Party’s pledge to eliminate post-secondary tuition. She told him she’s currently planning to

go to Norway for college, since there is no tuition there.

De Jong said he had about 12 volunteers on his campaign, and roughly 10 people showed up to the election party at his campaign headquarters in Whitehorse on Monday. He was the first candidate to congratulate Bagnell on his win that evening.

Bagnell, he said, has promised to gather up the Green Party’s campaign signs in some of the communities, since the party’s resources are so limited. “Larry was very warm,� de Jong said. “Hopefully there are no hard feelings among the candidates. It’s a contest of ideas, not personalities.�

De Jong headed back to Faro on Tuesday, to resume teaching on Wednesday morning. “No rest for the wicked,� he joked.

But he said his political career is not over, and he may even consider running for the Green Party during the next territorial election. He said he likely wouldn’t do anything differently if he runs again. “The Green Party has a lot of new ideas. We want to be elected

aving just gone through a municipal election where current issues with waste management were addressed in various candidates’ platforms, you may be tired of hearing about the need to solve our waste problems.

But it is Waste Reduction Week across Canada, and I can’t think of a better time to reflect on the state of waste management in Yukon.

As much progress as we seem to make, the issue never seems to be solved. Don’t we already pay a lot of money in tipping fees at the waste management facility? Doesn’t the city have dedicated staff working on reducing garbage? Didn’t Raven Recycling open its drop-off bins again? Isn’t Whitehorse Blue Bin Recycling thriving? Why is this still an issue then?

Garbage is a funny matter, in that we have never truly agreed upon on how to properly manage it. When looking at how we have previously dealt with improving our waste diversion, we have only come up with Band Aid solutions that constantly need to be revised.

Certainly we are doing much better at responsibly managing it than when we simply dumped it in McIntyre Creek, but landfilling is not a permanent solution.

Recycling in the territory has never been easier and practiced more, but it can’t be applied to every material we use.

The City of Whitehorse’s waste diversion rate has never been higher with it currently at 33 per cent, but that means we are still throwing out 67 per cent of materials we use.

We are more conscious than ever about the amount of waste we produce and how we should responsibly dispose of it, but the amount of disposable packaging included in everyday products we purchase is increasing.

If we really want to work on solving our waste problems, we need to look at it from a wider perspective. We need to work towards what is known as zero waste, where products are designed to be reusable and repurposed rather than disposed of and forgotten.

Everything we throw out is essentially a resource that we are wasting.

Advertising Representatives cannot expect to entirely solve this problem by only fixing one issue. All of the factors in managing our garbage influence one another, and we need to work towards improving all of them: recycling, composting, landfills, waste haulers, transfer stations, illegal dumping, controlled substances, recycling processors, tipping fees, e-waste, beverage container regulation fees and hazardous waste.

You can quickly see how daunting this problem can become.

Here are some of the more immediate concerns in waste management within Whitehorse. We still need to implement a blue box program, better use of our compost facilities and ensure cardboard and organics aren’t being put in the garbage. We also need manufacturers to become stewards and take more responsibility in ensuring their products are reused. Then, as more residents begin to divert more of their waste, we need to ensure our recycling processors can accommodate the increasing amounts of material from residents to look after.

Where do we even start on this long list of things to do?

All of us need to participate. Be conscious of the amount of food waste you throw out.

Recycle cardboard rather than putting it in the garbage. Start composting if you have

not already. Be mindful of the amount of fast food packaging you purchase and bring your own containers. Be mindful of how much you are actually throwing away in the garbage as the majority of it can actually be diverted.

Many businesses around town are already focused on reducing the amount of waste they produce and increasing their recycling rates. We have just elected a new council that supports implementing a blue box program.

Both of these institutions are on the right track, but they will not be successful solely by themselves. The public has to engage and participate in the process as well; we won’t achieve anything without politicians and the public cooperating with one another.

This problem will not be solved quickly.

But small steps do make a big difference, and everyone from all parts of the community will have to be involved.

Waste Reduction Week is a good time to discuss these matters, but it is only one part of what we need to do. We have already made good progress on waste management and we have never had a higher waste diversion rate, but the City of Whitehorse has declared a goal to become a zero waste community by 2040. Let us see how much more progress we can accomplish.

Part of the difficulty is that many of the people vying for council are relatively unknown quantities. The information overload we are faced with could mean that we might elect one without a thorough vetting of their credentials.

Alternatively we might pass on a relatively unknown yet quality candidate in favour of someone with more name recognition. Simple name recognition plays too large a role in our municipal elections, meaning that incumbency is a major advantage (although apparently not enough to prevent Dave Stockdale’s ouster after sitting on council almost my entire lifetime). I can’t count the number of times that I’ve heard people rationalize their decision to vote for a particular candidate for reasons that boil down to “because I’ve actually heard of him or her.”

Making matters more difficult is the short elections window in which we have to process municipal politics. We knew the final list of candidates for less than a month before the election. So not only do we have a lot of information to sort through, we have to do so in a matter of

weeks.

This is not conducive to a thorough and proper vetting of the candidates.

Is there a way of whittling down the number of candidates that we have to consider without taking away one of the best aspects of municipal politics – the ease of getting on the ballot for people who want to put their names forward? Perhaps.

Whitehorse elects its city councillors at large, meaning that every councillor is elected by all of the voters of Whitehorse.

It is a system that has the advantage of making each councillor accountable to the entire city but makes the process cumbersome for voters.

Many cities use a ward system, where the community is divided up into what are comparable to what we know as ridings in the federal and territorial context. This system narrows the choice for voters and reduces the number of candidates they need to pick to one. If Whitehorse were divided into six wards, for example, each ward would have averaged about three of four candidates – a far more manageable number than 22.

This would allow the candidates to more directly engage with a greater proportion of the voters who elect them. It is pretty difficult for a candidate to knock on every door in town, and as a general rule you don’t get to meet many candidates during the short election window unless you actively seek them out. More discussions on the doorstep could serve to make more community members engaged with the process.

There are other reasons to favour a ward system. Graham Lang expounded on some of them in a column he wrote for the News on May 7, 2014 entitled “Whitehorse needs a ward system,” and even proposed how the city could be broken down.

It is an idea we should seriously consider. We are blessed that so many people want to put their names forward to participate in the democratic decision making of our community. But such a crowded field is not conducive to the type of thorough vetting that a healthy democracy requires.

Nation Governments. Those who advocate for the proper social support programs. But amongst these groups business must have a strong and well considered voice that allows us to participate in shaping the way forward. Too often that has not been the case.

The Yukon chamber believes that the we can organize the business voice into a stronger, more well informed component of the overall dialogue.

Indeed, the control exercised by the left/relativist side of the political spectrum often leaves little room for consideration of contrary viewpoints and a reasoned and respectful discussion.

Schools and universities are no longer “intellectually free.”

Law societies and teachers unions fight to prevent private colleges from offering law degrees and teaching certificates, not because they have any concern about the quality of the programs or the competence of the graduates but because they don’t like the school’s code of conduct. Politicians kow-tow to special interest groups social agendas. Media mavens focus more on editorializing and leading public opinion than on presenting facts and balanced reporting.

A recent case is the issue of the niqab. To my knowledge, the only significant journalist who has dared present an opposing viewpoint is Rex Murphy (CBC, Sept. 30) whereas opposition politicians and the majority of the media have waxed indignant over the government wanting faces to be uncovered at citizenship ceremonies.

They say the niqab is just a

piece of clothing. Is it really?

That begs other questions: is a Ku Klux Klan hood just a piece of clothing? Is a flag just a piece of colored cloth? Is citizenship just a piece of paper? Is a niqab just the equivalent of a balaclava one wears to prevent frostbite?

Or is a niqab something different? A political statement?

A sign of disrespect of Canada and Canadians and our values?

A sign of subjugation and violence against women? A refusal to integrate into our society?

The political left does not want us to even think about, let alone discuss, such questions.

One thing is for sure: the niqab is not a religious garment nor is it just a piece of clothing unlike a balaclava, surgical masks or other face coverings which we may temporarily wear for health, safety and other utilitarian purposes but otherwise remove and live in our society with our faces uncovered.

Neither is the government discriminating, nor regarding Muslim women as second-class citizens by asking/requiring the niqab be removed at citizenship ceremonies.

That opposition politicians, our national media, and the Muslim segment of our population would say otherwise and try to denigrate the Conservatives and portray Canadians as racist bigots over this issue is reprehensible.

undreds of Yukoners flooded into the Air North hangar in Whitehorse over the weekend to see popular Christian bands and hear evangelical preacher Will Graham speak.

The event, dubbed the Celebration of Hope, saw close to a thousand people turn out on both Friday and Saturday nights, according to organizers. Bringing the show

to Whitehorse was the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, an organization started by the famous American revivalist of the same name, with Will Graham being his grandson.

Bright lights, fog machines, and thumping subwoofers highlighted bands popular in Christian music circles like the Juno-award-winning The City Harmonic, and High Val-

ley, the 2015 Canadian Country Music Association’s group of the year.

Illusionist Brock Gill wowed the crowds with his impressive archery skills and card tricks.

The Celebration of Hope was the culmination of almost a year of planning and organizing by local Whitehorse churches and pastors.

Dog Meets God offers unforgettable moments, showcases next generation of Whitehorse acting talent

ow to describe the Guild’s new production of Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead?

Think of it as a comedic cross between a Charlie Brown special and the Breakfast Club, viewed with teen-dysfunction lenses instead of 3D glasses.

It was a great night out at the Guild. There were a lot of laughs, a bit of nostalgia about watching Charlie Brown specials on CBC North when I was a kid, and more than a few deep thoughts to keep chewing on the next day.

I won’t spare the spoilers since – unfortunately for you if you missed it – the play closed last Saturday.

Bert Royal’s screenplay highlights how tough it is to be a teenager by taking the characters you recognize from Peanuts and putting them in a modern high school. It is immediately

obvious we’ve left Charlie Brown Christmas Special territory when the play opens with CB and his teen-goth sister mourning the death of Snoopy, who had to be put down after getting rabies and eating his little-yellow-bird friend Woodstock.

The characters in the play go by different names than the Peanuts characters, presumably since the owners of the Peanuts copyright weren’t keen on their comic strip being associated with teen sex and marijuana. But the characters are immediately recognizable and, to keep it simple, I’ll go by the names you’re familiar with.

I especially enjoyed seeing the next generation of Whitehorse actors hit the stage. As much as I like seeing my own high-school vintage on the community-theatre stage (I won’t be forgetting James McCullough taking his shirt off during a saucy scene in Chicago any time soon!), it was inspiring to see current high school actors put

on such vivid performances.

Brooke Fusick, a current F.H. Collins student, was hilariously alarming as hard-drinking and sex-crazed party girl Peppermint Patty. She and her buddy Marcie (Kayleigh Poelman, also from F.H. Collins) delivered their one-liners with perfect timing, pausing only to top up their chocolate milks in the school cafeteria with vodka.

Ben Soprovich projects a zenlike calm as stoner-philosopher Linus. Kayla Dewdney also does a fine job as Lucy, balancing the need to give sage advice to CB while demonstrating the reason why CB can only get that advice by visiting her in a secure psychiatric facility (she set the Little Red-Haired Girl’s hair on fire).

The play revolves around CB and Schroeder. Indeed, the surprise kiss between CB and Schroeder is another Guild image I won’t be forgetting. I was thinking that Kevin Ray, a Whitehorse newcomer, was doing a good job playing the slightly puzzled

straight man that I remembered from Charlie Brown specials.

Then the word “straight” took on a different meaning.

Schroeder is played by Loughran Thorson Looysen, also a high school student new to the Guild stage. I’ve seen him on other stages before, and he has matured impressively as an actor. His character is a childhood friend of the others, who is now shunned and bullied by them.

Ben Moffatt faced the challenge of acting the role of Pigpen, a homophobic jock, when he witnesses CB and Schroeder kissing.

Since he was as scary as one of my classmates when another came out of the closet back in the day, I think Moffatt passed the test.

Schroeder’s suicide after Pigpen’s homophobic assault brought a profound silence over the audience. I think everyone was thinking about what they did or didn’t do in situations in their own pasts. When CB protests that he never bullied Schroeder, the

latter reminds him that he didn’t do anything to stop it either.

The weakest part of the play is perhaps at the end, when the characters turn to the audience and give anti-bullying messages. It seemed more like a government-mandated empathy workshop than drama.

But it is an important message, so why not deliver it with a sledgehammer?

Kudos to director Clinton Walker and artistic director Anthony Trombetta for finding such a superb cast and putting on such a riveting show. I’m looking forward to the Guild’s next production. If you don’t have your tickets for Twelfth Night yet, you should buy them now.

hey say good design never goes out of style.

If that’s true, then pick anything off the shelf at The Collective Good and it should stand the test of time. Showcasing the best of simple, contemporary design, the general store in Horwood’s Mall features high-quality and handmade clothing, furniture and much more.

Each product for sale is curated by owners Jen Williams and her husband Paul Gort.

Both possess backgrounds in art and design: Williams is a photo-based artist, and Gort is a furniture maker. “We bring the two together in the store,� says Williams. “We started out just loving well made, finely crafted things.�

After opening in their first location in Horwood’s Mall in 2013, the store caught on with the community and grew out of its small space. Opening the new location last year, just down the hall from the previous store, allowed their product line to expand to include furniture and lighting. The store is an official retailer of upper-echelon furniture makers Gus Modern and EQ3, and even some of Gort’s own woodwork creations can be found on occasion.

Trying to find products with clean lines, intuitive features and no frills can be difficult, especially in smaller cities such as Whitehorse. And it’s not just the design they look at, but also where and how it’s made.

T

hey say good design never goes out of style.

If thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s true, then pick anything off the shelf at The Collective Good and it should stand the test of time. Showcasing the best of simple, contemporary design, the general store in Horwoodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mall features high-quality and handmade clothing, furniture and much more.

Each product for sale is curated by owners Jen Williams and her husband Paul Gort.

Both possess backgrounds in art and design: Williams is a photo-based artist, and Gort is a furniture maker. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We bring the two together in the store,â&#x20AC;? says Williams. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We started out just loving well made, finely crafted things.â&#x20AC;?

After opening in their first location in Horwoodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mall in 2013, the store caught on with the community and grew out of its small space. Opening the new location last year, just down the hall from the previous store, allowed their product line to expand to include furniture and lighting. The store is an official retailer of upper-echelon furniture makers Gus Modern and EQ3, and even some of Gortâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own woodwork creations can be found on occasion.

Trying to find products with clean lines, intuitive features and no frills can be difficult, especially in smaller cities such as Whitehorse. And itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just the design they look at, but also where and how itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s made.

Crusaders victorious at home

T

he Vanier Crusader capped the Super Volley regular season with wins on home turf on Friday.

Hosting the F.H. Collins Warriors, the Crusaders came from behind to win in senior girls and produced a straight-set win in senior boys at Vanier Catholic Secondary School.

There was plenty at stake in the boys game. With the win, the Vanier boys finished the regular season in first with a 3-1 record.

The Warriors placed second at 2-2 and the Porter Creek Rams third at 1-3.

The Crusaders have therefore secured a bye into Friday’s Super Volley final while the Warriors and Rams with faceoff in Thursday’s semifinal.

“Our team has a lot of skill.

When they come together and play as a team, they are almost undefeatable,” said Crusaders head coach Ben Craigen. “But it depends on how they feel and how badly they want to win.

“Tonight we started off with not a lot of momentum. But as we played through the night we started to pick up momentum

and towards the end there it was pretty convincing we were in control.”

The Crusaders pushed the Warriors, last year’s Yukon champion team, into a second place finish with a 26-24, 25-23, 25-17 on Friday.

Down 13-5 in the first set, Vanier tied the game at 17-17 and took their first lead of the match at 20-19 before falling behind again. Tied again at 24-24, Jesse McCuaig slammed a kill for set point before teammate Ian New put in an unreturned serve for the set.

The Crusaders only got stronger from there. They opened the third set with a five-point run, eventually establishing a 14-4 lead. They won it on a tough serve from Daniel Moses.

Following the game, Warriors’ Anshil Kumer and Crusaders’ Angus Newell were named the Players of the Game. “(Newell) normally plays power. Tonight he was filling in for the libero position and the right side position,” said Craigen.

“He played both positions flawlessly, hence his nomination for MVP.” Crusaders beat the Porter Creek Rams in a tight five-setter on Thursday night at Vanier. The

first place team’s only loss of the Super Volley season came from the Rams on Oct. 7.

The Crusaders came back from down a set, down eight points to win the third set and down seven points to win the fourth set in a 16-25, 25-15, 2521, 25-23 win over the Warriors.

“The girls really showed their drive and their love for volleyball tonight,” said Crusaders head coach Amanda Bartel. “There were some moments where they got down, that’s true, but pushed hard and fought hard for the last three games.”

The Warriors will get another crack at maintain leads over the Crusaders in Thursday’s Super Volley semifinal. Vanier finished in second with a 2-2 record, F.H. “We’ve had a little bit of a rocky season,” said Bartel. “We’ve had some pretty high points and we’ve had some pretty low points as well.”

After falling behind 13-6 in Friday’s fourth set, the Crusaders caught the Warriors at 22-22.

Vanier’s Katelyn Holway then knocked away back-to-back kills for match point. Teammate Kathleen Limpio made a big dig to keep the ball in play before the Warriors missed on a follow-up attack.

Warriors’ Jayden Demchuk and Crusaders setter Mikaela Ponsioen were named Players of the Game.

“She was on fire,” said Bartel of Ponsioen. “We play a six-two system and she was front row hitting every hit she could. She had lots of kills and even got a couple of big blocks in there as well. She was a very good allaround player tonight.”

The Super Volley semis and finals will take place Thursday and Friday at Porter Creek Secondary School. The girls games starts at 5 p.m. and the boys at 6:30 p.m.

Huskies land sponsor, set dates with Fort Nelson Tom Patrick News Reporter

he Whitehorse Huskies are now the Nuway Crushing Whitehorse Huskies.

The senior menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hockey club has adopted the elongated moniker with the addition of a title sponsor, Nuway Crushing Ltd., the club announced Friday. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had one sponsorship opportunity for the title sponsor and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re pretty happy that Nuway took us up on that,â&#x20AC;? said Huskies president and general manager Matt King. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They have definitely surpassed our expectations. The fulfillment package asked for a commitment of $5,000 per year for two years in exchange for tickets and some advertising in the program that sort of thing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and the name being put in the title of the team.â&#x20AC;?

Sponsorship money from the Whitehorse general contractors company will be used to offset travel costs, accommodations on the road, arena rentals and printing programs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are operating as a not-forprofit organization, so our goal is essentially to break even and have ourselves in a good situation to start next year with a bit of money in the bank,â&#x20AC;? added King.

first games of the season as they take another crack at winning the Coy Cup, B.C.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s AA championship trophy.

The Huskies have scheduled a four-game home-and-home series with the Fort Nelson Yeti.

The Yeti will host the Huskies for two games Nov. 13 and 14, and Whitehorse will reciprocate with games at Takhini Arena on Dec. 11 and 12. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re currently in talks with a AAA team out of Alberta about coming for a home series here in January,â&#x20AC;? said King. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re also talking to the Powell River Regals, so hopefully we can get them up here for a series as well.â&#x20AC;?

The Huskies produced four wins over the Yeti and two over the Regals last season, thereby fulfilling the required six games with B.C. AA teams to qualify for the Coy Cup. Whitehorse then lost two straight in a best-of-three playoff series to the Fort St. John Flyers in March, ending the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s season.

The Flyers went on to win the Coy Cup, defeating the Terrace River Kings in the final.

Strikers win gold with thrilling final in North Van

or the fourth year in a row, the Yukon Strikers were golden in North Vancouver on Thanksgiving.

A Strikers girls team went

undefeated to claim the top spot in U13 Division 3 at the 29th annual North Shore Girls Soccer Club Thanksgiving Tournament on Oct. 12.

“The goal for this tournament was to really work on our positioning and to work on keep-

ing possession of the ball. Win or lose, we wanted to go down there and play good soccer and expose some of our very youngest players to competitive situations,” said Strikers coach Arnold Hedstrom.

“So we totally met our expectations. Every player got lots of field time and at the same time I saw steady improvements throughout the whole tournament.

The Strikers struck gold with a 3-2 win over North Shore Seawolves from North Vancouver in the final.

Tied 2-2 in added time – the 73rd minute in the 70-minute match – Strikers’ Taliya Lindley made a cross-field pass into the Seawolves’ goal box. The ball pinballed around in a scramble before centre mid-fielder Abby Rich pounded it into the back of the net for the win.

“I was just really proud of my whole team because there was just a little bit of time left,” said

Rich. “I felt proud of myself and very confident after.”

“It was a really fun tournament and a very intense and close final,” she added. “I love those challenging games, when we just barely win. It makes me feel more proud.”

Rich scored her team’s first goal of the final and teammate Samantha Demchuk scored the second. Both Rich and Demchuk were on the gold-winning U12 Strikers team at last year’s tournament. (A U11 Strikers team won gold at the tournament in 2013 and a U12 squad in 2012.)

The Strikers opened the tournament with a 3-0 win over the Seawolves on Oct. 16.

“We played them in the first game of the tournament and we won 3-0, but one was an own goal, the other was a penalty kick,” said Hedstrom. “So they were very close to us and I felt they were really well coached.

“When they came back to play us in the final, they really plugged up the middle – they put a lot of players back in the 18-yard box because they knew we had a lot of scoring punch.”

The Strikers then beat the North Shore Panthers 6-3 and the North Shore Ravens 8-1 on Oct. 11.

By the end of the tournament Lindley had seven goals, Sara Charlton five, Rich four, Demchuk two and Chelsi Gorrell two.

Goalkeeper duties were split between Larissa Atkin, Emily Organ and Demchuk.

Toronto catcher Russell Martin had to pause, trying to choose the right words, when asked in spring training this year about what his first attempt at catching the Dickey knuckleball was like.

“Have you ever tried to catch a butterfly as it’s floating around in the air?” he asked by way of response.

“I wish I could put a camera on my mask or something for people to see exactly what the ball’s doing,” he added. “It’s pretty impressive.”

April 26, 1942 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; October 13, 2015 It is with great sadness that the family announce that after a brief illness, our dearly loved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Marjorie, passed away quietly surrounded in love with her family by her side.

Marge was of Ojibwa ancestry and a proud member of the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek of Naughton, Ontario, as well as a long time Yukoner. Many will remember Marge for her work at the McCrae Truckstop, Carcross Corner, Youth Services, Whitehorse Corrections, Saan Store and Walmart, or as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Grandma Cookieâ&#x20AC;?, as she loved to bake and share her goodies with everyone.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Brown, all the nursing staff on the Medical Wards and Darla, Anne Marie, Judy, Teri, Anne and all staff of the First Nation Health Program for their compassionate care of our wife, mother and grandmother.

The family had a private visitation in the Healing Center at the hospital, and would like to thank Elder Doris MacLean, Elder Ester Dobbs, Elder Ruth Carrol, Elaine Jakesta, and Julie Broenen for their traditional prayers and songs; Father Ain and Father Kieran, as well as Maureen, Dawn and Beth from Mary House for their prayers during the week, at the visitation and their friendship to Marge over the years; to Sherry, Georgie and Shayna Kinney for providing our visitation dinner; to Cheryl McKay for providing us with Thanksgiving dinner; Donald Gammel and Gowan McLean for their comforting presence and to all who provided us comfort and support.

A mass in Margeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s honor will be said on October 22, 2015 at the Sacred Heart Cathedral at 12:10pm, and a Celebration of Life will be held for Margeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s friends on Saturday November 21 at 1:00 pm at the Golden Age Society.

Yukon Energy Corporation is seeking proposals from qualified consulting firms to perform a dam break analysis on the Wareham dam located upstream from the Village of Mayo on the Mayo River.

The project report resulting from this work will contain model assumptions, inundation mapping for the Village of Mayo and the area downstream of the Wareham dam. The report will be due on January 31, 2016.
