STUDY TO MOVE RAIL LINE WOULD COST $700K

A technical study on whether it’s feasible to move the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway train tracks from White Rock into Surrey will cost about $700,000.

And it’s a move that will largely benefit White Rock and do little for Surrey, according to Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner.

“The real winners would be the City of White Rock,” Hepner told The Leader Wednesday. “They don’t have to look at ‘what are the implications of that move and what does it mean for others?’ ” That said, she notes a relocation is worth a closer look.

“It’s a big decision and worthy of analysis,” she said. “We are probably not the only city in the country looking at… vulnerabilities and what the options are.”

Surrey council voted Tuesday night to have staff examine the possibility of cost sharing with the province and White Rock before finding a firm to conduct the study.

White Rock Mayor Wayne Baldwin – who along with council named rail relocation as one of the city’s strategic priorities last fall – said in September that White Rock is waiting for Surrey to commit to a joint application to the Canadian Transportation Authority on the matter.

Pointing out that “three-quarters of the rail frontage is in Surrey,” Baldwin said it makes more sense that the cities Linda Hepner band together on the issue.

“If there’s going to be an accident, it’s going to happen in Surrey, so they have a vested interest in this,” he said, a sentiment he reiterated at his Oct. 7 state-of-the-city address.

Earlier this month, Hepner told The Leader’s sister-paper, Peace Arch News, that she agreed the two cities “need to have a united front on this issue” and that there are some “Surrey-specific issues” that need to be examined first.

If students in Surrey and Delta decided the outcome of this week’s federal election, former Surrey mayor-turned-Conservative MP Dianne Watts would not have won her seat in South Surrey-White Rock.

More than 850,000 students in 6,000 schools Canada-wide cast ballots in mock boxes this week as part of Student Vote 2015.

About 165,500 students in B.C. voted, with dozens of schools and thousands of kids and teens in Surrey and Delta among those who took part.

Most of the local results mirrored those of the general election.

Students participating in 31 Delta schools – both elementary and secondary – voted to elect Liberal Carla Qualtrough, as did the adult electorate.

And in Surrey, the Surrey-Newton, Surrey Centre, Fleetwood-Port Kells and Cloverdale-Langley City ridings all went to Connor Gillies casts a the Liberals in the stuballot at Pacific Heights dent vote, just as they did after the election Elementary. SUBMITTED on Monday night.

The only riding where the student vote differed was in South Surrey-White Rock riding.

While Watts won by about 1,400 votes in the actual election, students at the 19 schools participating in that neighbourhood voted – marginally – to elect Liberal Judy Higginbotham instead.

It was only by a hair, however, as Higginbotham secured 932 votes to Watts’ 925. Such a narrow a win would likely have sparked a re-count in the general election.

Groups opposing the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion sought to persuade voters to coalesce around a single antiConservative candidate in swing ridings.

For months, anti-Conservative campaigners from environmentalists to veterans tried to persuade like-minded voters to coalesce behind the strongest opponent in each riding.

But as the dust settles on the Liberals’ powerful majority victory, it’s unclear if those strategic voting attempts had great effect, other than to demolish Green party hopes to add seats.

Organizations like LeadNow and the Dogwood Initiative funded riding-level polls to try to help guide progressive voters.

LeadNow recommended NDP candidates in 11 B.C. ridings, and the Liberals for two seats on the North Shore.

All but three of those chosen candidates won their races.

One notable exception was the choice of the NDP candidate in Vancouver-Granville who ended up third behind the Liberal victor and the Conservative runner-up as voters apparently disregarded the advice.

Mario Canseco, vice-president of Insights West, which did polling for Dogwood, said strategic voting attempts appear to have had more effect on Vancouver Island than in the Lower Mainland, where those efforts were swamped by the strength of the Liberal wave.

“There are certain pockets where strategic voting worked very well and probably enabled some NDP victories,” he said, adding a few New Democrats were elected on the Island who otherwise would not likely have prevailed over Conservatives.

LeadNow made no recommendations in some ridings presumed

to be safe Conservative seats that ended up hotly contested.

Those included South Surrey-White Rock, where Conservative Dianne Watts narrowly prevailed, as well as Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon and Cloverdale-Langley City, where Liberals unexpectedly captured turf that traditionally went Tory.

It’s difficult, Canseco said, for progressive strategists to get enough granular riding-level data on individual races to gauge how they are evolving in time to be useful to voters.

Strategic voting was based on the premise that Liberals, NDP and Green supporters would risk leaving room for Conservatives to win many races unless they first settled on a single consensus candidate.

A shorter campaign might have resulted in a Conservative victory, he said.

Instead, the Liberals had more time to build momentum and present leader Justin Trudeau as a viable prime minister.

Canseco doesn’t accept one theory that the red wave resulted mainly from the Conservatives’ choice to emphasize the niqab issue in Quebec, harming NDP chances there and making the Liberals seem the more obvious alternative for the anyone-but-Harper movement.

Train activity along White Rock’s waterfront has increased over the past 16 years, leaving some residents in that city concerned about possible negative outcomes.

The route sees trains run along the White Rock and Crescent Beach waterfronts.

Fears heightened after the Lac-Mégantic rail derailment disaster on July 6, 2013. Forty-seven people in the Quebec town were killed in the petroleum explosion. Roughly half of the downtown core was levelled.

A jogger was also killed on the tracks in White Rock that same month.

A corporate report to Surrey council outlines some of the other concerns being raised by residents near the track.

“Transportation of simple construction materials and mail has transitioned to include coal, and other materials such as chlorine and liquefied natural gas,” the report to council states.

In the campaign’s final week, several prominent B.C. environmentalists publicly turned away from the Greens in favour of either the NDP or Liberals, in the name of preventing another Conservative government.

Green leader Elizabeth May likened it to being gunned down by “friendly fire.”

When the votes were

tallied, the Green vote in B.C. had increased only marginally – from 7.7 per cent to 8.2 per cent – and they hung onto only May’s seat.

Speaking to supporters on election night, May said strategic voting was a major factor.

“Particularly on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland was the notion that people who wanted to vote green shouldn’t. Couldn’t.

Premier Christy Clark is emphasizing cooperation with the new Liberal government in Ottawa on climate change and infrastructure spending, while avoiding comment on plans to run deficits and legalize marijuana.

Clark said Tuesday she is looking forward to having Prime Minister-designate Justin Trudeau accompany premiers to Paris at the end of November for the next United Nations climate conference.

Trudeau said Tuesday he is looking forward to changing Canada’s reputation as a “less than enthusiastic actor” on climate policy, but he wants provinces to take the lead.

Clark said B.C. will outline its “Climate 2.0” plan before leaving, and it will add to the carbon tax on fossil fuels with measures aimed at the “built environment” and other ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Trudeau’s infrastructure plan is in “complete alignment” with B.C.’s efforts to grow the economy, with BC Hydro alone spending $2.5 billion a year over the next decade, Clark said.

She sidestepped a question on Trudeau’s deficit plans, noting that a prime minister has to govern for all provinces

The Liberals actually secured more seats in the student vote than the real election, while the Conservatives received fewer. The NDP did about the same, while the Greens fared better, landing four seats, compared to the one they actually won.

Here’s how you responded:

Red shift in Surrey-Delta Surrey and Delta voters chose to go a different direction on Monday, with five of the six local ridings now Liberal.

Other than Sukh Dhaliwal in Surrey-Newton, who will return to Ottawa as a Liberal MP (he served from 2006-2011), all the MPs elected from the area are new to federal politics.

Most areas of Surrey have not been represented by a Liberal in Ottawa since 1953, while in Delta the most recent Liberal MP was last in office in 1972.

What caused this shift? Voters were hungry for it. The Conservatives’ governing style turned off many people. Changes to immigration policy, particularly in areas such as family reunification, were unpopular. The niqab issue was disquieting to recent immigrants.

The Liberals ran a positive campaign. Justin Trudeau, who visited Surrey several times, appealed to younger voters.

Voter turnout was up significantly, to more than 70 per cent in B.C. In Delta, it was over 75 per cent, while in South Surrey-White Rock, it was 74.4 per cent. The lowest turnout in the six local ridings was in Surrey Centre, where it was 61.27 per cent.

Many voters from Surrey’s non-Caucasian ethnic groups went Liberal in a big way. In particular, the large Indo-Canadian vote went heavily towards the

Liberals. This is best illustrated in Surrey-Newton, where three-way races in the past four elections (in what was Newton-North Delta) changed into a Liberal rout. Dhaliwal won 56 per cent of the vote in a riding with a voter turnout of 68.56 per cent.

NDP incumbent Jinny Sims won just 26 per cent of the vote and Conservative Harpreet Singh had just 15.7 per cent.

Liberal Ken Hardie easily beat incumbent Conservative Nina Grewal in Fleetwood-Port Kells, and NDP MP Jasbir Sandhu lost his seat by a wide margin to Randeep Sarai in Surrey Centre.

Perhaps most surprisingly, Liberal John Aldag beat Conservative Dean Drysdale in the new Cloverdale-Langley City seat by just under 8,000 votes. In that area of Surrey, the population has grown dramatically, particularly in Clayton. It is much more ethnically diverse that it once was. Nonetheless, historic voting patterns in both Cloverdale and Langley City have been strongly conservative for generations.

The same can be said for Delta.

The Delta riding first created in 1988 was Progressive Conservative under Stan Wilbee, then Reform, Canadian Alliance and Conservative under John Cummins, who was MP for 18 years. This time around, Liberal Carla Qualtrough easily beat

incumbent Conservative cabinet minister Kerri-Lynne Findlay, with 49.3 per cent of the vote.

Findlay had 32.7 per cent.

Perhaps almost as surprising was the narrow victory of Conservative Dianne Watts over Liberal Judy Higginbotham in South Surrey-White Rock. Watts is the popular former mayor of Surrey, used to winning 70 per cent or more of the vote. She only managed to get 44 per cent of the vote, to Higginbotham’s 41.5 per cent. The vote difference was 1,400 votes.

The NDP vote collapsed and that is equally surprising. Surrey has had a strong NDP base for many years and has sent numerous NDP MPs to Ottawa since the early 1960s.

What’s ahead? It is likely that there will be one cabinet minister from Surrey. Best bests would likely be Aldag, who is fluently bilingual and has many years of experience working for Parks Canada, or Dhaliwal, who has previous Ottawa experience.

Watts will likely be a Conservative front bencher in Opposition, and is sure to play a significant role in an upcoming leadership contest, as leader Stephen Harper intends to resign.

I have written about violence in relationships before, and I will continue to do so until it is non-existent in our community.

Domestic violence is not just about physical aggression, but includes sexual violence and emotional and financial abuse. These behaviours have a staggering emotional impact on all members of a family exposed to it.

In most cases, women are the target of violence and abuse, but children, seniors and intimate partners can also be victimized.

Children are particularly vulnerable when they witness or are exposed to violence. They are at risk of emotional, behavioural, cognitive, and social problems.

Many of these children experience immediate physical and psychological damage,

and in some cases, it is life-long.

Some acts of violence are so horrendous, I cannot describe them in this article. To think that children witness these events, scenes that take an emotional toll even on first responders, makes me sick to my stomach. Some children end up losing both parents – one is dead, the other is in jail – and this has to stop.

It is not just extreme violence that causes major damage in a family.

Verbal abuse and name-calling, swearing and berating; emotional abuse involving controlling and aggressive behaviour; sexual abuse including unwanted sexual touching, harassment or intercourse; and financial abuse through which many victims are oppressed financially, living without necessities and unable to sustain independence, also destroy lives.

I belong to the Network to End Violence in Relationships (NEVR), a network of various agencies who are working to end abuse. NEVR, which is coordinated by Dr. Balbir Gurm, focuses on Surrey and North Delta and includes representation from social agencies and law enforcement, and works with nursing students from Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Our current students are clearly committed to ending violence in relationships from a public health perspective; they are working on a project to educate bar, restaurant and beauty salon staff about the signs of domestic abuse.

Grants to help homeless ▶ SEVEN SOCIAL SERVICES GROUPS SHARE A BOOST OF $130,000 BLACK PRESS

Seven local social service providers received

a $130,000 boost in grants thanks to the Surrey Homelessness and Housing Society.

On Thursday (Oct. 15), the funds were presented to the groups at the seventh annual awards and grants presentation ceremony.

“This is a gratifying evening where we celebrate the community for its collective contributions to helping our most vulnerable citizens,” said Coun. Judy Villeneuve, chair of the Surrey Homelessness and Housing Society.

“Working together, we

are holding back the tide of homelessness and helping to lead the way home.”

Organizations benefitting are: Elizabeth Fry Society of Greater Vancouver; Options Community Services; Pacific Community Resources Society; Realistic Success Recovery Society; Social Planning Research Council of B.C.; and the Surrey Homelessness and Housing Task Force.

The crowd also celebrated the 2015 Heroes of the Homelessness Awards.

They were: Carolyn Colwell of Your City Sport, Bruce Kehler of Canex Building Supplies and B&B Contracting.

Colwell was inspired to launch her buy-onegive-one custom sock company after volunteering at a homeless-serving event where socks were in short supply.

For every pair of socks ordered, Your City Sports donates a second pair to the homeless. Colwell has distributed more than 5,000 pairs of socks in Surrey since January 2014.

Kehler has a long history of philanthropy and has donated more than $200,000 into community services since June 2015.

B&B Contracting is providing a portion of their services in-kind to help Options Community Services in the site-preparation stage for the construction of a shelter in Cloverdale.

Fix coming for confusing highway signs JEFF NAGEL

Complaints from drivers about confusing signage along Metro Vancouver highways have prompted the province’s transportation ministry to make changes in some areas, including along Highway 17.

The $1.3-billion South Fraser Perimeter Road slashed across existing highways in Delta and Surrey when it opened in 2013, creating a spider’s web of new on- and offramps and overpasses in several areas.

Drivers coming up Highway 17 from the Tsawwassen ferry terminal can be confused by the Highway 99 exit sign that says “Vancouver – USA border” before the exit lane splits in the two opposing directions.

The ministry says it will add other major destinations to the sign, including Richmond and Surrey, to better indicate where the exit can take drivers.

The province also says it will add Surrey and Langley to exit signs on Highway 99 southbound after exit 20 directing drivers to take Highway 91 and then Highway 10 to reach those destinations.

Extra signs are also promised for drivers on Highway 17 to show the alternate route to Surrey via Highway 99 south.

It also pledged to make the lights brighter in the George Massey Tunnel and to improve signage on how to access the Vancouver landfill in Delta via Highway 17.

B.C. changing lease, strata rules Tenants will be able to end a lease early if they are fleeing family violence or require long-term care, under changes the Residential Tenancy Act being debated in the B.C. legislature.

Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman, responsible for housing, said the

changes have been sought by opposition and government MLAs in response to constituents. Another change will allow landlords to return damage deposits electronically.

The Strata Property Act is being changed to allow condo owners to wind up their strata corporation and sell the property with a vote of 80 per cent of owners. The law currently requires unanimous consent of owners, allowing one holdout to veto a sale.

The changes are expected to be made law when the B.C. legislature fall session ends Nov. 19.

Carbon capture regulations set The B.C. government is preparing a regulatory system for carbon dioxide capture and storage facilities, allowing the greenhouse gas to be extracted from raw natural gas and pumped back underground.

Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman says amendments before the B.C. legislature allow capture and storage as “a permanent solution for disposing of carbon dioxide” in underground rock formations.

The amendments also give the BC Oil and Gas Commission authority to determine location and feasibility of well sites, pipeline routes and other oil and gas activities.

Spectra Energy and the federal government each put up more than $11 million for a carbon pilot project at Spectra’s Fort Nelson gas processing plant, with the province adding $3.4 million. The feasibility study took CO2 from raw gas, which runs between 10 and 14 per cent, and injected it into deep saline aquifers.

The province is updating its climate change strategy, with an advisory panel and public discussion paper expected to produce a draft policy

by December.

Metro garbage fee overhaul unfair, say critics ▶ TIPPING FEE ‘CHAOS’ BLAMED ON PROVINCE JEFF NAGEL

A new shake-up of Metro Vancouver’s garbage tipping fee system is being criticized as unfair.

The regional district will charge all municipalities or their contractors a flat $100 a tonne next year to dump garbage collected from single-family homes.

But private haulers that pick up from multi-family buildings will continue to pay $80 a tonne – the lowest rate for large loads under the variable tipping fees that continue for commercial waste services.

Coquitlam Coun.

Craig Hodge voted against the change, calling it an unfair two-tier system.

“Out in the public, it looks like we’re favouring privatized services over city services,” Hodge told directors at a recent Metro Vancouver board meeting.

The $80-per-tonne rate for loads heavier than nine tonnes is unchanged, but the tipping fee on loads less than one tonne will rise from $130 to $133 per tonne, and the fee on mid-size loads climbs from $109 to $112 per tonne.

Metro officials argued it’s fairer to charge a flat fee on the municipal garbage so some cities don’t pay more than others under the variable rates.

Chief Administrative Officer Carol Mason said many cities had budgeted to pay the mid-size $109 per tonne rate, so the $100 rate is “better for many of them.”

A staff report indicates that may rise to $109 per tonne in 2017.

An additional $5 transaction fee is charged on all loads.

The outflow of commercial waste has sharply declined thanks to Metro’s price-cutting strategy, as well as the higher cost of sending garbage to the U.S. due to the weak Canadian dollar.

That’s expected to mean Metro will avoid a $4.5-million deficit previously projected on its waste operations. The regional district has also cut eight jobs and pared $2 million from the $90-million solid waste budget.

Directors say they can’t return to a consistent tipping fee structure without once again spurring haulers to go elsewhere, depriving Metro of fees and the ability to enforce bans on the dumping of recyclables.

“It’s the best compromise that we can come up with,” Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie said.

He blamed the province’s rejection of Metro’s waste export ban for creating the pricing “chaos.”

Just waiting for pictures ▶SURREY PHOTOGRAPHER CHRISTOPHER HERWIG’S BOOK HAS A TITLE THAT SAYS IT ALL: SOVIET BUS STOPS BOAZ JOSEPH

Something odd happened on the way to St. Petersburg.

In 2002, Christopher Herwig, then a London-based photographer, decided to ride his bike to Russia and challenged himself to take a photograph every hour along the way.

“I did this so I would force myself to photograph things I normally may have overlooked as not exotic or exciting enough,” says Herwig, who was born and raised in Surrey (B.C., not England).

By the time he reached the Baltic states, he realized that something repeatedly caught his eye.

“Along the way, I had photographed some bus stops through Western Europe, but it wasn’t until I entered Lithuania that I really started to get amazed by the variety and creativity of the shelters.”

It turned out that the Soviet Union’s bus stops were anything but drab products of bureaucratic utilitarianism.

The designers and architects were given apparent free rein to build colourful, flamboyant, sometimes almost animated bus stops, often on seemingly deserted stretches of road in the middle of nowhere.

And it’s to those nowheres that Herwig

returned in subsequent years, gathering material that would lead to his book Soviet Bus Stops, now in its second edition.

Its 157 images are the products of 30,000 kilometres covered by car, bike, taxi and (of course) bus from 2003-2006 (when he lived in Kazakhstan), 2008, and when most motivated for making a book, three weeks in the summer of 2013 in Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, Georgia and Abkhazia.

Herwig also returned to Belarus in 2014 and 2015 for a few updates to his book.

The Soviet Union, all 11 times zones of it, broke up at the end of 1991, leaving its 15 republics more open to visitors than before.

Sometimes Herwig had some trouble explaining what he was doing – especially if the bus stops were in bad shape and locals weren’t proud of them.

Herwig maintained that he was impressed and was bringing goodwill.

While Westerners might have their own idea of what the Soviet Union was, or what its remnants are, Herwig got to see the differences in the cultures and landscapes.

“Central Asia was great. It wasn’t only wide-open steppe, but also incredible mountains climbing to over 7,000 metres, magical ancient cities and green rolling hills,” he recalls. “Many of my favourite bus stops were in the middle of nowhere, which for me provided a perfect backdrop without distractions.”

Herwig, who speaks “pretty good” German and rough Russian, French, Spanish and Swedish, says most people were friendly, most of the time.

On one trip, he got his Lada Niva (a rudimentary cousin of the Jeep) stuck on a mountain road and had to share a yurt with a shepherd family in Kyrgyzstan.

He recalls having a “friendly chat” with two KGB-like officials in suits and sunglasses in a small room on the Tajikistan-Afghan border.

And he had to fork over about $200 to a taxi driver in Abkhazia who accused Herwig of being a Georgian spy. Herwig secured his memory card safely in his underwear just in case he lost his camera, too.

Herwig produces photos and videos for organizations such as UNICEF, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Norwegian Refugee Council, and has had photographs published for dozens of magazines and news organizations over the years.

His family’s moves and his love of road trips helped him mentally prepare for projects such as Soviet Bus Stops.

As for all of the former Soviet Union’s bus stops, Herwig admits missing one republic.

“Sadly I have nothing to show from Azerbaijan. I was there in 2008, but was not specifically hunting bus stops. Also, the few bus stops I have from Russia did not impress me so much, so they are not in the book.”

In recognition of the first-ever National Coaches Week Sept.

19-27, the BC Games Society included three Surrey residents in a list of outstanding coaches who have been members of Team BC at multisport events such as the Canada Games and BC Games.

“An initiative of the Coaches Association of Canada and the provincial and territorial coaching organizations, (National Coaches Week) celebrates the tremendous positive impact coaches have on athletes and communities across Canada,” said a Team BC press release.

Q Paul Tardi became a coach almost a decade ago when his two sons took up the sport at the Langley Curling Club, and Paul agreed to be an on-ice volunteer.

“As a former player I Paul Tardi has been coaching curling since 2008. BC GAMES PHOTO knew how to play the game, I just did not know how to coach,” he said. “I started taking coaching courses in 2008 and realized how much I did not know and I am still learning how to be a better coach every season.”

Certified at Level 3 in the National Coaching Certfication Program last year, Tardi has coached at the 2012 and 2014 BC Winter

Games, as well as the 2015 Canada Winter Games. Each time, he guided his team to the medal podium, including the BC Games gold medal in 2012 in Vernon with sons Tyler and Jordan on the Fraser Valley team.

But winning isn’t the only goal when coaching. Enjoying the game is just as important, Tardi insists.

“I think one of the

most important things about coaching kids in sport is that they have to enjoy the sport they are playing before you start trying to improve their skills,” he said.

“Regardless of how talented your players are, if they don’t enjoy playing the sport, they will not stay in the sport for very long. continued on page 23

Eagles score late in the game, upset Rivermen ▶ SURREY’S JUNIOR A TEAM DEFEATS LANGLEY 3-1 AFTER A LOSS IN COQUITLAM RICK KUPCHUK

A solid third period against their nearest rivals has moved the Surrey Eagles out of the basement in the BC Hockey League’s Mainland Division.

The Eagles hung on for 40 minutes against the Langley Rivermen Tuesday evening in the South Surrey Arena, then dominated the final frame, scoring two unanswered goals to break a 1-1 tie and go on to a 3-1 victory.

The win improved Surrey’s record to 4-9-0-0 (win-losstie-overtime loss), one point better than the 3-10-0-1 Prince George Spruce Kings. Langley remains in second place in the Mainland Division at 8-5-0-0.

It was the Rivermen who dominated play for the most part, outshooting the Eagles in each of the first two periods.

Surrey was shorthanded nine times in the game, but with Daniel Davidson turning aside 39 of 40 shots in goal, the Eagles were able to kill off every penalty.

Max Kaufman gave the Rivermen a 1-0 lead with a goal in the last minute of the first period. Matthew Hermary tied the score 1-1, scoring for the Eagles with four minutes to go in the second period.

John Wesley played hero for the home team in the third period, netting the winning goal five minutes in, then adding an insurance score on the powerplay with four minutes remaining in the game.

Outshot 25-16 in the first two periods, the Eagles enjoyed a 15-5 advantage in the final 20 minutes.

The Eagles played once last weekend. They surrendered two goals in a five-minute span in the third period Friday night, and lost 4-3 on the road to the Coquitlam Express.

Surrey carried the play throughout Friday’s game, played at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Centre, and didn’t trail until the Express broke a 2-2 tie with their quick strike late in the game.

Their most dominant period was the first, a session in which the visiting Eagles outshot the home side 15-6 only to go into the first intermission in a scoreless tie.

The Eagles scored twice in the second period. Darren Hards netted the first two and onehalf minutes in, but Coquitlam tied the score less than three minutes later.

Just 45 seconds after the Express pulled even, the Eagles went up 2-1 on Nathan Deyell’s first goal of the season. Luca Leone of the Express tied the game once more, scoring on the powerplay just shy of the nine-minute mark.

Surrey had a slight edge in play in the third period, but it was the home side taking a 4-2 lead just past the midway point. Kyle Star scored with three minutes to go to give the Eagles some hope, but time ran out with Surrey one goal down.

The Eagles outshot their hosts 38-26, but went zero-forfour on the powerplay while the Express scored on their only man-advantage opportunity.

The Eagles will host the Chilliwack Chiefs (6-5-1-2) tonight (Friday) at 7 p.m. in South Surrey, then will travel to Washington for games Saturday night and Sunday afternoon with the Wenatchee Wild. The Wild lead the Mainland Division with an 8-3-1-1 record.

Esther Fern

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Esther Fern Wendland on Oct. 15, 2015. Esther passed away peacefully with her children at her side. She was born on January 17, 1933 in Cold Lake Alberta. She was married to Almar Wendland, who predeceased her in 1991. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Esther is survived by her sons, Wayne (Kelly) and Brad (Lynda), daughter, Shelley (Brian) and her brothers Stanford and Hugh Graham.

Esther spent much of her life living and working in North Surrey where she was well known and had many friends and close relationships with those she worked with and cared for. She was a strong woman who put others’ needs before her own. When she wasn’t working, she loved spending time in her garden and especially loved spending time with her family, whom she loved deeply.

She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren Terra, Leah, Keith, Shea, Janelle, Cole and Brayden, & her great-grandchildren Kelvyn, Lily, Olyvia, Abygail and Dominic. Esther will live forever in our hearts & we will always remember her smile, her laugh, her love of animals and her welcoming heart. No service will be held as per Esther’s wishes.
