SUBMITTED Halloween is a wonderful time of year, but it can be a little scary for the younger children. It is precisely because of that fact that the Community Harvest Hoedown was started.

“I was out with my three kids and some of the stuff was a little scary for them, so I thought why not do something that’s good for the family, is nutfree, and not scary?” said Carol Conroy, organizer. “It’s a lot of fun and this is the fifth year for it.”

The event takes place

at the Cranbrook Alliance Church on October 31, between 3:30 and 6:30 p.m.

People can expect old-school games such

as a fishing pond and a penny toss, along with a bouncy house, and a large petting zoo that features sheep, an alpaca, chickens and

rabbits. Of course, there will be cotton candy for those with a sweet tooth and a free hotdog meal for anyone who wants it.

“We had about 700 people attend last year,” said Conroy. “All of this came through donations and people just pitched in and came together. It’s a

safe, comfortable environment and it looks like its growing every year.”

So this year, if you are looking for something safe and fun to

do with the children on Halloween, check out the Community Harvest Hoedown at the Cranbrook Alliance Church, starting at 3:30 p.m. on October 31.

SUBMITTED Are you intrigued by Community Policing? Are you looking to volunteer your time with a group that has some fun and excitement? Do you want to learn a new skill? The Cranbrook Citizens on Patrol is now in the process of recruiting new members.

Cranbrook RCMP is seeking community members for the Cranbrook Citizens on Patrol group. The members of Citizens on Patrol (COP) act as extra “eyes and ears” for the Cranbrook RCMP. Their volunteer work is extremely beneficial to the community and greatly appreciated. Their efforts have assisted the RCMP in detecting impaired and dangerous drivers, break and enters, and locating suspects who are fleeing on foot, to name just a few.

COP Volunteers receive training provided by local RCMP in various disciplines includ-

ing radio protocol, observation and patrol techniques, note taking, traffic control and safety, S.A.R.S (Stolen Automobile Recovery System) computer training, 10 code and Alpha code use.

New COP volunteers will be required to travel with an experienced COP member prior to final acceptance into the program. Criminal record and driving record checks will be done to ensure the integrity of the program. To become a COP member you must: • be a minimum of 19 years old • either reside in or have a business in Cranbrook • commit to one shift per month (7 hours) • participate in training sessions If you are interested in becoming a COP volunteer, please contact Cst. Heritage BC wants your help to locate and visually assess the condition of the Stop of Interest signs found throughout British Columbia. Starting in 1958, Stop of Interest signs were erected across British Columbia to commemorate significant historic people, places, and events. Over 100 signs were erected from the 1950s through the 1990s. Since that time some signs have gone missing and some have

been moved.

BC Farmers can dispose of old pesticides and livestock medications SUBMITTED Farmers from the Interior, Okanagan and Kootenay regions of British Columbia are invited to safely and responsibly dispose of their unwanted or obsolete pesticides and livestock (including equine) medications from October 20-23 in the Interior and Okanagan regions and November 4-5 in the Kootenay region.

CleanFARMS, an industry-led, national not-for-profit agricultural waste management organization, in partnership with the Canadian Animal Health Institute (CAHI), is offering this program at no cost to farmers.

“We are pleased with the success of our collection programs in the past,” said Barry Friesen, general manager of CleanFARMS. “It’s clear that British Columbia farmers are committed to the environment and to doing the right thing.”

ish Columbia have a long history of good stewardship practices. Since 1998, B.C. farmers have turned in 300,000 kilograms of obsolete pesticides, including more than 19,000 kilograms collected in the Fraser Valley and Vancouver last year. This year, CleanFARMS will once again be collecting livestock and equine medications in B.C. “The British Columbia Agriculture Council (BCAC) appreciates the opportunity for B.C. farmers to safely return unused products through an industryled program,” said Reg Enns, executive director of the BCAC. “The future of farming relies on a clean and sustainable environment.”

After collection, the pesticides and medications are taken to a licensed waste management facility where they are disposed of through high temperature incineration.

Owned and operated by BC Hydro, the Elko Dam and Generating Station is located near the community of Elko, 30 kilometres west of Fernie.

The Elk River is considered one of the best kayaking and rafting rivers in the East Kootenay. People come from across North America and the world to recreate on the river, however, they may still be uninformed of the extreme danger of being on the river between the Elko Dam and the Powerhouse.

To address these safety concerns, we’ve designed and installed a warning system at Elko Dam to inform people in the canyon of impending spillway gate changes. The project includes the installation of sirens, strobe lights, improved safety fencing, and additional warning signs between the dam and the powerhouse. This warning system doesn’t inform river users downstream of the powerhouse.

Safety is our number one priority. We’ve installed this system to raise awareness of river hazards associated with dam operations, to improve safety and to ensure that people in the canyon are aware of sudden changes in water levels.

Please note that the land on both sides of the Elk River from the Elko Dam to the Elko Powerhouse is BC Hydro property. For public safety reasons, access to this section of the river across BC Hydro property isn’t permitted.

TOM FLETCHER Let’s get real about trade deals As the dust settles from Monday’s federal election, to paraphrase former prime minister Kim Campbell, it’s time to talk about serious issues again.

The Conservatives were hoping to make 2015 a free trade election, by signing onto the world’s largest trade deal at the end TOM FLETCHER Tenants will be able to end a lease early if they are fleeing family violence or require long-term care, under changes the Residential Tenancy Act being debated in the B.C. legislature.

Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman, responsible for housing, said the changes have been sought by opposition and government MLAs in response to constituents. Another change will allow landlords to return damage deposits electronically.

The Strata Property Act is being changed to allow condo owners to wind up their strata corporation and sell the property with a vote of 80 per cent of owners. The law currently requires unanimous consent

of July. But things didn’t go as planned at the talks in Maui, and Canada was among the players that walked away from the TransPacific Partnership table at that time.

Then came five days of round-the-clock negotiations in Atlanta, with the U.S. pushing for a deal with Japan, Korea, Australia and other Pacific Rim powerhouses to normalize trade in 40 per cent of the world’s economy.

And the TPP came together at the end of September.

Canada and B.C. essentially got what our governments were demanding, which was broad access to Pacific of owners, allowing one holdout to veto a sale.

The changes are expected to be made law when the B.C. legislature fall session ends Nov. 19.

Carbon capture regulations set The B.C. government is preparing a regulatory system for carbon dioxide capture and storage facilities, allowing the greenhouse gas to be extracted from raw natural gas and pumped back underground.

Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman says amendments before the B.C. legislature allow capture and storage as “a permanent solution for disposing of carbon dioxide” in underground rock formations.

Rim markets and continued protection for nearly all of domestic dairy, poultry and egg markets. Also preserved was B.C.’s regulated market for logs and U.S. lumber sales.

The 200-kg gorilla of the TPP burst out in the heat of the election campaign, and the Kim Campbell rule was demonstrated again. Much of the discussion revolved around alleged secrecy, as the legal text of the deal won’t be out for some time to come. Protected farmers downed their pitchforks, counting their blessings, and their guaranteed compensation.

The amendments also give the BC Oil and Gas Commission authority to determine location and feasibility of well sites, pipeline routes and other oil and gas activities.

Spectra Energy and the federal government each put up more than $11 million for a carbon pilot project at Spectra’s Fort Nelson gas processing plant, with the province adding $3.4 million. The feasibility study took CO2 from raw gas, which runs between 10 and 14 per cent, and injected it into deep saline aquifers.

The province is updating its climate change strategy, with an advisory panel and public discussion paper expected to produce a draft policy by December.

The NDP was forced to come out against the TPP, as it was against trade deals with the U.S., Mexico, Europe and others.

But it’s getting lonely for them as the rest of the world moves on.

Within days of the TPP deal, the World Bank issued one of its periodic reports on “extreme poverty,” which it defines as an income of less than $1.90 U.S. a day. And 2015 is the first year when fewer than 10 per cent of the world’s people remain below this global poverty line, down from 12.8 per cent in 2012.

It’s easy for comfortable First World folks to protest conditions in running shoe and

cell phone factories in India or China, but the graph of extreme poverty in those countries shows steep decline since 1990. Trade and technology are lifting up the poorest of the world.

For B.C., withdrawing from Pacific Rim trade is unthinkable. We worry a lot about lumber and copper and natural gas, but the TPP also opens up huge markets for services, where much of our economic future awaits.

The question for us is simple. Can we compete in health sciences, engineering, architecture, digital media, and information technology? Do we want to?

allegedly subsidized lumber exports, with an export tax collected

by Canada when the price went below the floor of $355 per thousand board feet. That money went back into our government general revenue.

Higher prices meant no export tax was collected through 2014 and early 2015, and only five per cent as of September. Now that the agreement is expired, by default we have actual free trade in lumber for up to the next year.

The TPP doesn’t change B.C.’s dependency on the United States. As with NAFTA, our vital lumber trade remains under a separate agreement, which expired on Oct. 1.

I’m told by federal and provincial officials that at this stage, the U.S. isn’t even taking our calls on the softwood lumber agreement, which Canada and B.C. want extended. Americans are preoccupied with the TPP and domestic politics.

Cranbrook girl recovering in Calgary

Brooklyn, a grade 7 Laurie Middle School student had her life changed when she woke up one morning in September and was not able to move her legs.

The young girl was quickly taken to the Alberta Children’s Hospital where doctors quickly discovered a tumor in her spine.

Brooklyn underwent surgery in early October and Doctors were successful in removing a tumor from her spine that had caused paralysis from the hips down.

Since the surgery, Brooklyn is already starting to see early signs of progress.

“Brooklyn is doing really, really well with all things considered,” says Fundraiser Coordinator Christy Wheeldon.

“She did have the tumor removed from her spine and since then she has gained a little bit of movement in her right leg but not on the other side.”

Doctors originally estimated a 25% chance for a full recovery but Brooklyn is not letting that number dampen her spirits!

“I’m told she is a really happy, positive, bright, young lady! She has been doing crafts up at the hospital and also at the Alberta Children’s Hospital they do offer schooling so she’s going to be starting tht very soon.”

Looks like Brooklyn’s also made new friends with some of the Calgary Stampeders too!

Brooklyn and her mother are together in Calgary and are very thankful for the tremendous support shown by the Cranbrook community.

COTR expertise sought in Tanzanian Project College of the Rockies welcomed four visitors from Tanzania from October 5 to 14, 2015.

of Tanzania, Mr. Julian Sowani, Senior Vocational Instructor and Mr. Edwin Temu, Vocational Instructor came to draw on the College’s experience in connecting with industry and government.

The College was selected in March to lead a Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan)

project, in partnership with Camosun College and Mwanza Regional Vocational Training and Service Centre, to work to improve the ability of Tanzanian technical and vocational training institutions to deliver effective skills training programs.

However, people who cut or use firewood must ensure that it was harvested legally.

Before collecting firewood please obtain a firewood permit to ensure that your firewood collection adheres to local regulations, and to verify that firewood collection is permitted in the area from which you plan to obtain your wood.

Firewood collection permits are free and allow British Columbians to collect and transport firewood from eligible crown lands for personal use. Permits must be printed, signed and carried with you when collecting firewood. Firewood permits are available at your local natural resource district office, or online at: www.gov.bc.ca/firewoodpermits To find out where firewood harvesting is prohibited on lands identified for conservation and/or other public use values in B.C. contact your local natural resource district office.

Firewood permits and their associated documentation describe the permitted areas, methods, and amount of firewood that can legally be harvested in the different natural resource districts.

Cutting down trees on Crown land without an appropriate permit, or selling any such firewood, is an ongoing concern in British Columbia.

This activity is illegal and could result in a violation ticket or fine.

It also could create safety hazards for recreationalists and other forest users, and negatively affect ecosystems - including fish and wildlife habitats.

College of the Rockies Introduction to Geology instructor, Katie Burles (far right) and her students were treated to a tour of some areas of the Bull River Mine Site owned by Purcell Basin Minerals Inc. The mine, which was active in the 1960s and 70s, is currently working toward receiving a mine permit to reopen.

Students received a tour of the processing plant as well as a surface tour that included information on safety, the history of the mine, the current state of development as well as the geology of the mine.

OBITUARY

SEBOLSKY, DOUGLAS JOSEPH 1954 – 2015 In the early morning hours of Tuesday, October 20, 2015, Douglas Joseph Sebolsky passed away at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital at the age of 60 years. Doug was born in New Westminster, BC on October 28, 1954, son of Matthew and Edith Sebolsky.

Doug loved life and the many good times he had living it!! He truly enjoyed working at the mill and did so for 40 plus years. He missed his job a lot when he could no longer work because of his health. Doug was a hopeless romantic – he loved love story movies as well as westerns and especially Hawaii 5-O. Rita and Doug loved taking short road trips but their most favorite place of all was to visit Lethbridge. Many special memories were made there.

Doug loved renovating the homes that he has lived in. He loved hamburgers but his most special love was for his two cats – Summer Dawn and Bo-Cephas.

Doug leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife, Rita; his son Christopher(Tiffany) and his daughter, Morgan.

Also left is his beloved grandson, Walker Douglas Sebolsky as well as his sister and brothers; Audrey, Morris (Linda) and Larry (Terri). Doug also leaves many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, co-workers and many, many good friends. Doug was predeceased by his parents Matt and Edith Sebolsky and his sister Myra.

A Celebration of Doug’s life will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Mark Memorial Funeral Home, 2024 Industrial Road No. 2, Cranbrook. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Prostate Health, 19 – 9th Ave. S., Cranbrook, BC V1C 2L9.
