Caring & Experience
Deliver the Right Medical Equipment The family approach at A-1 Wheelchairs is about taking time to show options and find the best choice for each customer’s unique needs. Andrea Smyrski, of A-1 Wheelchairs Unlimited, knows all too well that many companies selling medical and health equipment today are more interested about their bottom line than the customer. “People deserve to have the best equipment for their specific needs at a fair price,” she said. “We want to help people be independent as long as they can while also getting the biggest bang for their buck.” The approach comes to Andrea and her brother, Kevin Derkoch, honestly, who run the business together with their parents on hand. “My dad knew early in his adult life that this was an industry he wanted to be in. He prided himself on helping people achieve independence and he’s passed that on to all of us. People deserve to understand why choosing a dealer that is MDEL regulated and factory trained is important, and why big box stores are often not the right choice when buying medical equipment. Properly fit medical equipment cannot be bought online, without proper fit you can pretty much forget about proper function. “When you come here, we want you to be prepared to spend some time with us,” she said. “We’re going to talk with you about your needs, your current health and future health, and your lifestyle. In short, we want to build a relationship. So many times people buy an off-the-shelf item and are frustrated when it doesn’t work for the their needs, body type or lifestyle.

The Caring and Personal Approach to Real Estate Experience makes Angela Evennett a good REALTOR®, but taking care of her clients makes her great.
Finding the right REALTOR® is often as difficult as finding the right home. You want someone with experience, but also someone who understands the emotional aspects of the process. Someone who is with you every step of the way. It’s no coincidence that Angela Evennett’s tagline is “With you Every Step of the Way,” because she is. She knows how overwhelming the process of buying and selling can be – especially when life changes are part of the process – because she has been there. Now going into her ninth year as an award winning REALTOR®, Angela began her career as a REALTOR® with HomeLife Benchmark after being a stay-at-home mom with three kids. It was 2008 and the real state market had crashed putting her in the ideal position to work hard and gain the rewards the future held. “I knew I wanted to work with people,” she said of her career move. “I enjoy the challenges real estate brings and coming up with the solutions to meet the unique needs of individuals. Everyone is different, with different needs at different times in their life. By putting that time in when the market was difficult, I think it shows how hard I’m prepared to work for my clients.” For Angela, the job is all about the people. “I like to have fun in this job,” she noted. “It’s a serious, demanding, stressful time. It’s usually the biggest transaction anyone is involved in, so I like to balance that with fun.” Fun begins with a personal relationship, which Angela feels is essen-

Testimonials Angela, we just wanted to officially thank you for all of your help with finding us a beautiful first home. The experience was much more pleasant than we had expected. You were a joy to do business with, and we appreciate everything you did from the first call I made to you, to after we had the keys in our hands. Thanks for everything.

Thank you so very much Angela, it was a pleasure to work with you on the sale of our home and the purchase of our new one. Your patience and understanding with all our questions and concerns was second to none. We were confident from the very beginning that you were exactly the person who could and would take care of us. Your dedication to making us feel like your top priority was amazing. You were respectful of our wishes and worked hard to get us our deal. We could not have asked for a better agent, you were AMAZING, we are so thankful for all that you did for our family.
Brandon & Heather E At the end of May 2013 my world came crashing down. I needed to sell my house immediately and had no idea where to go. Angela Evennett stepped up and with her advice I prepped and staged my house in six days and sold in under a week for almost the full asking price. We found the perfect home within two more weeks. She arranged everything. Her advice was honest and helpful. She helped me prioritize and saw me through the mortgage process, checking in with me and allowing me to sleep at night. She was a tireless advocate and really helped me refine the differences between wants and needs. I could not have gone through this without her as a person and a professional.

COMMUNITY BUSINESS LEADERS
Good, tasty food is what Heritage Meats and Gourmet is all about. Eugene Vandenberg and Eleanor Cox met over a mutual love of food. Eugene, a butcher for more than two and half decades and Eleanor a cook, for about the same length of time. They bought Heritage Meats and Gourmet in 2003 and were soon aware of the difference in taste between regular meat products and non-medicated meat products. “We’d never tried non-medicated meat until we bought the shop and the old owner carried some of it,” Eugene said. “We tried it and both of us realized it tasted how we remembered meat tasting. Flavourful and real.” At Heritage, there is a wide range of meat available from beef and bison to turkey and rabbit. All of it is non-medicated which means the animals have been raised without hormones, antibiotics or animal byproducts. “The meat we sell comes from a completely vegetarian diet,” noted Eugene. “It’s not easy to get this quality of meat all the time.” Meat is the first priority of the business. Each variety comes in whole form and is cut to suit standard customer needs after being aged and treated to create the most flavourful product. This means 30 day aged beef (when demand isn’t cutting into the aging process), hand-crafted sausages and quality cuts. If a customer wants a specialty cut, they can simply ask and Eugene will work to supply or find a specific item. “We get our product as locally as possible,” Eleanor said. “JD Farms supplies us with turkey, pork comes from Gelderman Farms and all of our

The Latest Trends in Flooring Ensuring customers are satisfied and have the best experience possible is the Nufloors way. When choosing flooring for your home, rely on someone who has been in the business for decades and has seen trends come and go. For more than 40 years, Nufloors has been a part of Langley and knows how to help you find the right flooring for your specific needs while also ensuring the very best in customer service and satisfaction. Nick Kaplanis, general manager, noted one of the newest and hottest trends in flooring is the Luxury Vinyl Plank or Luxury Vinyl Tile range of products. “The luxury vinyl has overtaken the market, especially on the laminate side of things,” he said. “It is an excellent option because the vinyl is durable, waterproof, warmer, has realistic looking finishes and is quieter.” With a wide range of prices and designs, vinyl flooring is a superb choice for a number of applications and despite its relative newness in the residential market; it has been tried and tested in commercial applications for about 20 years. For those preferring hardwood, engineered products are definitely leading the way over traditional hardwoods. A wider-plank is the trend with grey or white-wash finishes and wire brush or distressed looks. “Engineered flooring is much more stable in our Westcoast environment,” Nick said. “We’ve got 3/8 to ¾ inch thicknesses to make good transitions to other types of flooring in a home.” Still a popular option, laminates

Taking Expert Care of Your Eyes The experienced team at Vision Care Centre wants to make sure your vision is the very best it can be. Ask Dr. Daman Johal why he became an optometrist and bought Vision Care Centre and he will tell you about how his grandmother’s deteriorating eye health encouraged him to make a difference for those experiencing similar challenges. “It’s your eyes,” he said. “They really are the windows to your general health. An eye exam should be a part of everyone’s regular health checkup.” When he purchased Vision Care Centre just over two years ago, which has been in the same downtown location on Douglas Crescent since 1995, he knew he made an exceptional decision. The family oriented optometry clinic and optical puts customers first with quality products, competitive prices and a team dedicated to superior customer service. “Our vision care team plays an integral role in our growing practice.” said Dr. Johal “They work well together and help each other out to ensure the patient has a pleasant experience.” By providing both eye exams and optical products, such as glasses and contact lenses, Vision Care Centre is a one-stop eye care shop. Dr. Johal is the on-site optometrist who enjoys getting to know his patients and helping them maintain good vision and eye health. He described an optometrist as being similar to a General Practicioner, but for the eyes. “We see patients in all age groups starting as young as six months,” explained Dr. Johal. You’ll Love Being Part of Rental suites at Avalon Gardens are not only beautiful, but this retirement residence makes life more enjoyable. The image of retirement usually includes carefree travel, less responsibility and more time for family and friends, but often this isn’t the case for retirees. There is the day-to-day drudgery of home maintenance, household chores and an ever-growing to-do list. Living independently doesn’t have to be that way, it can be the carefree image you hope for, at Avalon Gardens. Unfortunately, many seniors wait until they “have to” make a decision to move due to health or mobility issues. But, as Mardie Wolsey of Avalon Gardens puts it, a move made without the “have to” is a much easier and more pleasant one and allows for the enjoyment of less responsibilities. “Most people who move here say they wish they had done it sooner to enjoy the responsibility-free lifestyle,” Mardie said. “New friends, worry-free comfort and activities you love make Avalon Gardens a far better choice. In fact, many people tell us they didn’t realize they were lonely until they began making new friends and becoming more active.” All of the rental suites at Avalon Gardens are complete with full kitchens with granite counter tops, in-suite laundry, air conditioning, a balcony and more. Plus small dogs and cats are welcome. There is no need to make multiple bill payments anymore with cable, heat, rent, phone and internet combined into one convenient payment. “Not only is your own suite comfortable and welcoming, the common areas in the building are relaxing as well,” noted Mardie. “We don’t want it to look like a resort, we want it to look like home.” Your weekly linen service is taken care of in your own suite and housekeeping is part of the package as well.

Making Glass Repairs as Painless as Possible Treating people right with a nice environment and exceptional service is how the team at Broco Glass keeps customers coming back. A spotlessly clean bathroom may not seem like a priority for a glass shop, but for Shawn McMahon, owner of Langley’s Broco Glass, it’s just one of the ways to make customers feel welcome and well cared for. “We want to give everyone a positive experience when they come in here,” Shawn said. “We treat everyone as well as we’d treat our own moms. That’s important to me because I didn’t want this to be an old school shop where a woman wouldn’t want to use the washroom.” Obviously that level of care and attention goes beyond the bathroom. When Shawn bought the franchise back in 2003 he made a decision to be different from other glass shops by making people more comfortable. With experience in the business since 1988, Shawn witnessed the way most shops were run and knew what he didn’t want to do with his own business. “I know this business and I know what our capabilities are,” he said. “I know what we can do here. It’s a nice clean shop. Half my customers are women and I want them to feel comfortable coming in and getting great service.” Together with Shawn’s three full-time long-term employees, there is a lot of residential and auto glass experience at Langley’s Broco Glass along with the commitment to make sure people understand their needs and options. Call on the Experts for Your Paint Project Good paint and great service keeps customers of Benjamin Moore - Langley Decorating Centre coming back to this family-run business. Earle Lee started his career with paint back in the early 80s when he spent a couple of years working for a local paint store. While he wanted to stay in the business, he knew there was more he could do. “I decided I wanted to have my own business and sell high-quality paint,” Earle said. “I like being a people person. I really like the retail aspect of talking to people, working with them and getting to know their projects – which ultimately is getting to know them.” Earle owns the business with his wife Darla, daughter Jaymie and son Sheldon; they also have the expertise of five other team members, each with their own knowledge of different aspects of colour, paint and paint products. “We also have designers working here,” noted Earle. One of those designers is daughter Jaymie who has been working with paint, colour and interior design for approximately 15 years. She and the Decorating Centre’s other design team members (who all have designer credentials) can do in-house consultations or in-store, depending on customer needs. Not many paint stores provide this type of service offering, but as Earle said, it’s about making sure customers get what they need in terms of help and in terms of the end result for their projects. “When you treat people well and supply them with great paint, they will

Loved Ones with Compassion Henderson’s is making updates to ensure a more comfortable experience. The people at Henderson’s Langley Funeral Home truly care about others. They believe their job is to make one of life’s most difficult times a little bit easier to manage. With compassionate staff on-hand to meet your needs, it’s time to make the building more modern and comfortable. Exterior updates are already underway at Henderson’s which has been at the corner of Fraser Highway and 208th Street for more than six decades. Interior renovations are scheduled for the new year. Manager, Randy Terrace, is looking forward to the changes to bring a more modern feel to the space. “We help people make plans and arrangements at a time when emotions make it hard to do so,” Randy said. “That’s why we do what we do. We take the pressure off of people when we put everything together. Having a more modern facility will make that even easier and more comfortable for everyone.” Changes will include updates to the exterior façade of the building while on the interior, warm neutral tones will welcome visitors along with opening up the chapel area and creating better flow in the reception room. “We’ll be changing the carpets, the paint and lighting,” noted Randy. “Plus we’ll be modernizing and expanding some of the rooms.” The renovated reception room will feature tables with stools for a somewhat relaxed feeling to encourage sharing and coming together. “People are looking for a celebration of life more often than formal events,” Randy said. “The new furniture will help facilitate gathering in an open, inviting environment.” Randy and the team at Henderson’s

A vacuum may not be the most exciting purchase, but at Big Gary’s Vacuums you’ll find that if you buy the right vacuum you won’t have to purchase another for many years. Plus, you can keep that vacuum running like new with the team’s expertise in vacuum service. Owner, Lucinda Boschman explained it comes down to customer service and working with customers to identify the right machine. “When you buy a vacuum at a big box store, you probably just grab a box off the shelf and put it in your cart. You never really know if it’s the right vacuum for you,” she said. “We want to spend time with you to help determine your present and future needs.” Big Gary’s specializes in higher-end vacuums that last, whether central machines or stand-alone models. Plus, the team will help you determine if a canister or upright model is right for you and whether you’ll be better off with a bag or bagless machine. “Many homes don’t need those powerful brush heads we used to have for wall-to-wall carpeting,” Lucinda said. “Most homes have a mix of flooring including laminate, hardwood, tile, area rugs and carpet, a smaller machine will do a great job and last for years.” Big Gary’s offers brands like Miele, Dyson, Numatic, Electrolux, Panasonic and Sebo – the German brand used in Windsor Palace and The White House. A more Comfortable, Friendly Dental Experience At Willowbrook Park Dental Centre, patients will enjoy the welcoming environment and casual approach. A relaxed environment is at the core of Willowbrook Park Dental Centre with the entire team working to ensure the most comfortable experience possible for each patient. Dentists, Dr. Leana Lundt and Dr. Faria Chohan want their patients to feel at ease and know they can talk openly about their dental needs. Dr. Lundt joined the office shortly after moving to Canada from South Africa. She loves working with people and noted it’s a pleasure to go to work each day because everyone on the team works together to help one another. “I love the art behind dentistry and I love it when a whole family comes here to the office,” she said. “It’s important to me to book a little extra time when we have a new patient because I want to get to know them.” In the office, the team of seven work like a family towards the common goal of making the patient’s experience as good as possible. Dr. Lundt described it as the office’s culture, but also noted it’s partially because of the way people are in Langley. “They bring us eggs or homemade salsa,” she said of her patients. “That’s the thing about Langley. People want to get to know you, it’s very community oriented and I enjoy that.” Both Dr. Lundt and Dr. Chohan live in Langley and find pleasure in being part of the community as much as they love their occupation. Dr. Chohan purchased Willowbrook Park Dental early in 2015 and looks forward to

Not only does this new space accommodate more vehicle bays, it includes an in-ground chassis dyno and a full in-house transmission rebuild facility. Owner Satya (Sat) Bernhausen is excited about what the expansion will offer customers. “The in-ground chassis dyno will give us a quicker assessment of the vehicle the first time,” he said. “It will reduce the amount of time for diagnosis and be more effective and affordable for our customers.” The transmission rebuild facility will enable complete testing after a transmission rebuild. Customers will receive a certified report on their transmission before the vehicle even leaves the building, giving them complete peace of mind around the work done. All 10 Bernhausen team members are diesel specialists who work together on repairs, modifications, and maintenance. They know everything about how your diesel operates and have the experience to back it up. “I’m really proud of the team I have here,” said Sat. “Other shops wish they had this kind of expertise. We do every kind of diesel mechanical work – engine, driveline, you name it.” Bernhausen evolved over time to become one of the only shops in the west that has the full range of equipment to work on all kinds of diesel engines including a fuel injector test bench to test the latest fuel injectors

That culture is a wonderful thing for real estate clients because it means no matter which of the firm’s 95 REALTORS® you choose, you’re part of an office that knows Langley inside and out. Keith Setter manages the Treeland office and noted it’s a pleasure for the team to be able to say they have consistently been Langley’s number one real estate office since 2001 in both the number of units sold as well as dollar volume. If you’re looking for a REALTOR®, RE/MAX Treeland should be one of the three offices you contact; because as Keith explains, “This office probably lists and sells one out of every three homes in Langley. Plus we also work in commercial and land development as well as residential properties.” RE/MAX Treeland Realty is a true team, something not often found in a real estate office, with lots of activities for the REALTORS® to share strategies, tactics and the latest properties. The sales meetings, tours and other in-house events are always well attended which means clients can rest assured their REALTOR® is active in engaging with other REALTORS® and the community. Your
that Contributes to Community KPU brings education and community involvement to the Langleys in a number of unique ways. Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is always looking for ways to do things better, whether that means increasing the use of technology in programs, finding additional revenue streams or looking for new options to be a positive contributor to the community. It’s a big job, and a challenging one. President and vice-chancellor Dr. Alan Davis describes KPU as a unique, yet incredibly complex organization. At any given time, the school with campuses in Langley, Richmond, Surrey and Cloverdale (plus a new Surrey City Centre campus scheduled for late 2016) has 19,000 students, more than 120 programs, 1,300 employees and is involved with five mayors and councils along with the accompanying regional federal and provincial ministers. It’s certainly a lot to consider on a day-to-day basis, but for Dr. Davis, he sees the positives inherent in the work. “We have a huge range of students and a great diversity of culture within our campuses, our staff and our programs,” he said. KPU constantly strives to establish programs to meet the needs of the community. The popular new brewing and brewery operations program in Langley is one example. “The tasting was pretty extraordinary,” Dr. Davis said of how the program’s open house went. Another program, which has captured international headlines, offers an introduction to the professional management of medical marijuana in Canada. The two courses delivered entirely online have more than 100 people enrolled. “It’s a typical program for continuing education,” Dr. Davis noted. “Medical marijuana has got to be regulated, and this is a program for those wanting to approach it from the

Martial “Arts”
Your COMMUNITY BUSINESS LEADERS
...Martial “HEARTS” A unique mother/son partnership, living and sharing their dream and passion with the Langley Community.
This story started in 1996 with Tina, a frustrated mother, and Troy, her three year old son, who had cheerfully decided it was his destiny in life to bite every teacher in preschool. At a loss as to how to help channel this negativity into something more positive, Tina began to check out some local martial arts schools, believing a structured activity may help. After some intensive research, she discovered Safeguard Martial Arts, and very quickly knew that she had found exactly what she was looking for. Tina registered Troy into the TOTS Program at Safeguard, and he loved it! His instructor was young, energetic and fun, but firm and disciplined, and the class responded wonderfully to the positive reinforcement, and belts they earned. It was a perfect fit for them both. In fact it wasn’t long afterwards that Tina ditched going to the gym, and joined the adult program at Safeguard. A year later she was hired as part of the team. Neither of them ever looked back. Fast forward almost 20 years. Mother and son are a unique working partnership, and became joint owners of Safeguard Martial Arts, after the retirement of its founder in August of 2014. The former 3 year old biter is now a well-adjusted and respectful 23 year old man, a 3rd degree black belt, Sensei, and Chief Instructor of the school. His mother, is a 2nd degree black belt, and continues in her longtime role as the school’s Director of Operations. “We do what we love, and love

Specialty Doors, wood, trim and more More than 30 years in Langley has made Windsor Plywood the experts in finishing and finding the best pieces for the job. Custom cabinet makers, specialty mantel creators and wood project hobbiests all have one thing in common – they know Windsor Plywood in Langley is the best place to go to find what they need. They aren’t the only ones shopping at Windsor of course; homeowners, contractors and renovators also beat a path to find personal service along with specialty materials. Langley store owner since 1989, Craig Fairweather, said it’s Windsor’s perfect size that makes the stores something of a niche market and a destination for those looking for specific finishing supplies. “Windsor is large enough that we are competitively priced and carry a wide range of products,” he said. “But we’re small enough to offer specialty products and deliver truly personal service like carrying things out to your car for you.” Windsor Plywood is the source for moldings, hardwoods (including specialty and exotic wood), varieties of plywood, doors (including custom doors), cabinet plywood, hardware, and more. Ultimately, if you have a project and want it to look good, Windsor is your source. Not only do they have the materials you need, but they also have the expertise. “You don’t get the brush off here,” Craig said. “The person you start your conversation will see you through your purchase, cutting the materials, wrapping them and ensuring you have everything you need. They will see you through the sale from start to finish.” Most of the store’s staff have been in the building supply business for more

Ford Trucks Best Find passenger and commercial vehicles in the same place at the new Ford commercial truck centre and Dams Ford Lincoln Sales. There are two people who know Ford commercial vehicles better than anyone and they are both under the same roof at Dams Ford’s new Business Preferred Network office. The location recently opened next door to the newly renovated Dams Ford Lincoln Sales dealership creating the only combined Ford passenger and commercial vehicle centre in the province. John Doornbosch and Chenn Bergen, both commercial account managers for the Business Preferred Network, have approximately 80 years of Ford experience between them. “The Dams family has been serving the Surrey and Langley communities since 1975,” John said. “What they’ve created here is very unique. We have the only indoor commercial vehicle showroom in the area. Plus, because we’re on the same site as the passenger vehicle dealership, we have access to an extensive team of professionals beyond that of any other commercial dealership.” Between the indoor showroom and the outdoor lot, if you need a Ford commercial vehicle, it’s most likely you’ll find it here. More importantly, you’ll find the right Ford vehicle here because John and Chenn know the questions to ask to ensure you are matched to the perfect vehicle for your needs. “If you need a truck, chances are we’ve done one like it before,” Chenn noted. “We know service, we get the value of relationships. We ask the questions to get to the right truck.” Getting the right truck also means it fits the budget so there are financial specialists on site at Dams Ford Lincoln to ensure, whenever possible, financing is arranged within hours, not days. “Mr. Dams has been wanting a commercial building for a couple of years,” noted John. “He’s committed

Fun Atmosphere with Fresh Food Prepared Daily It was a love of trains that led to the start of Choo Choo’s in downtown Langley, a family-run restaurant with great food and drinks. Great restaurants aren’t often built from childhood passions, but Choo Choo’s Food and Beverage in downtown Langley was. The restaurant has been in the family for 23 years and owners Terry and Helene Causton are proud of what they’ve built, creating a great destination that welcomes everyone in for delicious food and drinks. “Terry and his brothers built a train track in the attic when they were kids,” Helene said. “And their grandfather had a cottage that was made from train cars. It’s in their roots.” Another thing in their roots is a love of the restaurant business. Terry was a chef at the Foxley hotel in England before coming to Canada and Helene was involved in restaurant management. The pair met through working together and have since passed on the love of restaurant management to their daughters Erin and Meaghan, as well as Meaghan’s husband Denton. “We are known for our schnitzel and burgers,” noted Helene. “We make our own bread and desserts. Everything is prepared fresh daily. It’s more expensive to do it this way. It’s a lost art, but that’s why we continue to do it.” As a family-friendly restaurant, Choo Choo’s has several dining areas to fit their patrons. One section, the unlicensed family dining room, has train tables for kids to play on. Other sections are licensed so customers can take advantage of the full line of craft beers on tap as well as other drinks. “We were the first restaurant in town to put craft beer in,” Helene said. The staff at Choo Choo’s is described

Child Development with Education and Play CEFA Walnut Grove is about an enriched curriculum with a focus on natural play based learning. When Mark Leslie and Jackie Jackson started their family of three boys, they didn’t know they would experience the worst that childcare could be. Jackie actually ended up leaving her career to care for the couple’s first child because the daycare situation was so bad. Both Mark and Jackie grew up in the country with room to play and explore. They knew they wanted those values in a childcare facility but couldn’t find one, so they started their own. They purchased Walnut Grove CEFA in 2015 and are adding two more CEFA childcare facilities in other communities to their business. “We knew what we wanted for our children,” Jackie said. “CEFA met a lot of our requirements.” CEFA stands for Core Education and Fine Arts and is an educational-based program through play. It’s partly Montessori, but more play based with a focus on having fun while learning. Mark and Jackie chose to remove a lot of the plastic toys from their classrooms and replaced them with wood materials. “Children and parents walk in and feel good,” Mark said. “Why can’t it be a wonderful environment with natural wood toys and manipulative’s with warm, calming paint colors that won’t over stimulate the child but rather help them stay focused and more relaxed throughout their school day.” Others in the community must agree with Jackie and Mark’s requirement for a great school. The couple is building a new baby room because demand is so high. They accommodate children from birth to five years old at the school. Another positive aspect of CEFA Walnut Grove is the things parents

Kids and the Arts
Brought Together Affordably PLAY brings professional, live arts education and entertainment to kids without breaking the bank. PLAY stands for Professional Live Arts for Youth and it’s about bringing the arts to kids aged 4-14 in a way that inspires creativity and confidence through fun. Director, Brad Tones is passionate about what he does because he feels kids are losing their creativity. “I have a fear that young people are losing their creative side,” he said. “Technology is taking over – TV, movies, phones.” The kick off for PLAY, which runs classes in Maple Ridge, Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, Burnaby and North Vancouver in addition to Langley, was in the summer of 2014 when kids were chauffeured to see Wicked at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in downtown Vancouver. Theatre is a big focus in the Langley area, so currently, Brad is finding the classes are geared towards performance theatre more than other areas. “Langley doesn’t have an arts centre,” Brad noted. “So there’s not a lot of arts programming for kids in the area. Kids want theatre right now in Langley, so we’re focused on that here.” In all areas, classes are based on what kids and parents are looking for. Brad said anything to do with the arts is possible including music, performance, mixed media, comic book creation, dance and more. Plus, because the classes follow the same schedule as public schools, it’s easy for families to take advantage of the offerings. Full day camp classes are held

Stopping the Pains of Debt
Sands & Associates specializes in personal credit issues by offering choices to help people get back on track. Money can be one of the most difficult topics to talk about. Being in debt carries not only the obvious financial baggage with it, but also emotional baggage. The team at Sands & Associates, like Credit Counsellor & Trustee Blair Mantin, understand how difficult it can be to ask for help. “Life events happen to everyone. We all want to be financially responsible, but things happen that put us in difficult positions,” Blair said. “Breakups, sickness or losing a job can all lead to spiralling debt and a routine of moving money from one account to another in the hopes something will get better.” As Blair explained, the situation seldom gets better by moving the money around. If anything it just causes a routine of paying interest, but not getting ahead. Sands & Associates have a number of tools, but mainly rely on two items to help individuals improve their financial situation (and consequently their sleep): the first is compassion and the second is a consumer proposal. “Almost everyone who leaves here does so much happier because they have a plan,” Blair said. “It starts with knowing that these things happen to anyone. There is no judgement here, it’s respect, dignity and empathy. We’ve heard just about every story.” The second item, the consumer proposal, is often the ideal solution, according to Blair. A consumer proposal combines all debt (except mortgage and car loan) into one payment, and stops all the interest. Sands

Local Expertise in
Medical Office Assistant Training Knowledgeable, experienced instructors at Westcoast MOA ensure students get the guidance they need to pursue their career. After working as a Medical Office Assistant (MOA), Patti Scott recognized that most doctors want to treat patients, not manage the day-today office duties of their business. She knew there was a way to deliver qualified MOAs to the field through affordable, local education. In 1998, Patti started Westcoast MOA to ensure medical offices had access to properly trained and employable individuals who wanted to work in the field. “I saw that some of my colleagues didn’t have temporary relief if they needed a day off and doctors were struggling to find qualified individuals,” Patti said. Together Patti and instructor/student coordinator Karen Bower train individuals to prepare them for work in medical offices. This may be through the Community Education-offered MOA course which is available three times a year; or students may prefer the Private Medical Office Assistant (POMA) program which runs year round in the downtown Langley training lab. Additionally, Patti runs a temporary and permanent placement agency for her students to find work once they have completed their programs. She provides screening and testing of MOAs – something a medical office can’t do – and even provides same day placements. “This is one of the main reasons I went through the program when I first met Patti and long before I came to work for her,” Karen said. “I knew she would be able to help me find work after I was trained.” To keep her skills up to date and ensure her curriculum is current, Patti

Your COMMUNITY BUSINESS LEADERS
in growing Willoughby Creating communities that work for businesses and residents alike. If you’ve driven down 208th Street in the past couple of years, you’ll know there’s something interesting happening. Willoughby Town Centre has quickly become a hub of the Willoughby area, delivering retail shopping and services to the growing region. Tami Huitema, development coordinator with Qualico Developments, noted that the design of Willoughby Town Centre was driven by the concept of home town spirit – a commercial development that maintains and enhances community. The project, created by Qualico, Chow & Li is about to progress into the next stage of development, bringing more opportunities to the Willoughby area. “There’s nothing in Willoughby like this,” Tami said. “We want to maintain that small town vibe within this bustling, growing environment.” Two years ago, businesses started to open in the development and a few lease spaces still remain. Cushman & Wakefield is managing those existing lease opportunities in Willoughby Town Centre and will also take care of the new opportunities set to begin in early 2016. The company will work with businesses interested in joining the community by outlining available spaces and managing lease arrangements. For more information call 604-683-3111. “There is so much residential growth in the area, it’s an ideal location for businesses and services,” noted Tami. “Our tenants are seeing double the growth in business from when they opened two years ago.” Not only is the amount of drive-by traffic on 208th Street significant for Willoughby Town Centre businesses, but with all of the residential homes in the area, walking traffic is growing by leaps and bounds. The next phase of Willoughby Town Centre will be a purely retail
